Review Toriciya - Cammeray

Ophelia, Xinran Pan
I’ve been to many nice Japanese restaurants in Sydney, Kyoto and my hometown Shanghai in the past few years and I have to say this place is definitely one of the epic ones. The food is very fresh and the sauce just tastes… right! You can feel that the chef has put lots of effort into it. The only downside is that you might be sharing table with other people so it’s not the best place to go to if you want to have some private time.

I am glad this restaurant are still as good as many years ago. Authentic japanese food, good sashimi, remind me so much about travelling in japan. I wish i could have bigger apetite and longer dining hours to finish everything. We just order too much as i want to try every dish on menu. I would come back again.

Extremely delicious and authentic Japanese cuisine. Their lunch special is of really good value as well! We had the Chicken Nanban, Chirashi Sushi and Vege Tempura Sets, which were accompanied by sashimi and other entrees.

We came for a birthday celebration for my bestie. The food was amazing and the sashimi platter was a Surprising combination of the freshness. Highly recommend the Foie Gras&Wagyu Sushi and the Savoy Cabbage. However the one star deduction was for the service. The waitress just ignore us and do not have patience to introduce the menu. Was a bit disappointed. Overall, guys you can definitely come for the food but not the service.

One of the better Japanese restaurant experiences you'll have. Book a table and be on time because you're in for a journey and it requires pace and efficiency. Could not fault anything brought out. The quality is off the charts spectacular especially the cuts of sashimi. Next time I'll go straight to the udon soup and some yakitori on the side for a perfect winters night dinner.

This is the best sashimi I have had in Sydney. Their fish is imported freshly from New Zealand every day. Scampi was absolutely umami. I loved it so much. The blue fin tuna was fantastic. Highly recommended. Kings fish was amazing too. Skewers were okish Chicken skin was really good tho. The beef tongue was yummy too. Chicken thigh was a bit dry. Plumb wine was really good too. Ice cream wasn’t great tho. The decoration and vibes were really great.

For a genuine taste and vibe just like you'd get in Japan, this is a must try. The yakitori options include the more common favourites but also a few delicious ones straight from Japan like the chicken skin, chicken cartilage and ox tongue. The scallop in butter soy was something different and amazing!

When I visited this Japanese restaurant three years ago with my mother for mother's day dinner, the food quality and the staff's hospitality was superb, exceeding my expectations. Three years later, it still remained the same and so I'll come back to this place again in the future.

Some food great but quality of sushi we recently tried went down, the rice and seasoning with vinegar very poor. Price is over the top and poor value for the general quality of food, service and atmosphere. Had to share table behind some crappy fridges, wait 1 hour for a plate of sushi and be given a dish we didn’t order and only to be asked did we order it. We noticed Ume shu (plum wine) was a cheap quality bottle charged at a high price and soda mix is charged extra which is lousy. Will not be going back there again unfortunately. Had a great experience before but looks like management is now pretty poor now. Better ti go to Kaido in chatswood or Yupuri in Crows Nest.

Friendly staff, AMAZING food, touch on the pricey side but still i can not stress how fresh and amazing the food is. Layout is beautiful as its small, homey feel and traditional japanese. Sake recommendations were perfectly matched and exactly what we asked for. Very professional staff, chef and food preparations and presentation Love this place!

THE place to go for traditional Japanese food. Quality in every dish. Their sushi is one of the best in the north shore.

Rang on Sunday evening at 730 to reserve a table for 3 people for 815pm on the same night. However due to unforeseen circumstances, we were unable to make it. We rang straightaway at 8pm to cancel our reservation only to be abused over the phone by the manager for not letting them know sooner. Even after apologising to him, he just kept abusing us until finally we just hung up. We were wanting to visit this restaurant for some time and would have postponed our visit for another night. However, after the way were treated, we would never visit this place even if it was the last Japanese restaurant in the world. There are plenty of wonderful Japanese restaurants nearby that we will continue to patronise in the future.

Please note, there is a common theme to many of the reviews on this establishment. Many people have commented on the rudeness of the manager and lack of customer service. It's probably high time you listen to the people who pay your wage and support your business and stop treating people like it's a privilege to be your customer.
Taylor
been here for years, recently quality poor as chef moved to Jizakana up the road. Uni and Toro still decent, but service is now very poor. Pay to eat, but boss is very rude.

What a beautiful find in this little suburb,
we were absolutely blown away by the quality of food here. Service is top notch, super accommodative even though we rocked up at 7pm with no booking but endeavour to find us a table and ended up only waiting for 15 minutes. Will definitely be back again for the degustation menu.

Sometimes the decor of the restaurant doesn’t match expectations and sometimes you know when you sit down, you’re in for a great meal. We wanna just straight up give this place a five but that would break out own rule :)

This place is definitely a hidden gem and honestly you can’t say you’ve had real Japanese food until you eat here. Simply one of the best in Sydney, yeap I’m foodie shaming you into coming here!

Everything was great duh~!

It was recommended by my friend in Sydney who is also Japanese like myself. I loved all their food and price is reasonable compared to Melbourne’s Japanese food. Every ingredients tasted fresh and they have a great selection of Sake. I would definately recommend anyone looking for authentic Japanese to make a visit. Tucked away in a residential area of Cammeray. I also loved how they played “Showa music” :) Keep us the good work!!

Food is good, fresh, pricy. Everytime when I make the booking, he always tell me ’minimum spending is $50 per person’. I only here this in this restaurant. While it’s easy to make it over$50, sashimi is $100 per person, food is good anyway.
Sydney Foodie
I once considered this place to be a hidden gem. The food was great, the atmosphere cosy and intimate, and best of all it was well hidden and frequented only by regular customers and those with recommendations. However, a recent experience has completely changed my impression of a place I once enjoyed so much.

The customer service at Toriciya is without a doubt the worst I have experienced anywhere in Sydney. The manager was extremely rude towards our table to the point I was embarrassed to have brought my friends from out of town here for dinner. We were continuously pressured to finish and hand back to table even though it took them an eternity to bring the food out! This is a true reflection of their willingness to sacrifice customer satisfaction for profit.

If you enjoy dining at fast food restaurants, this is the place for you. If you enjoy an authentic yakitori restaurant with great food, atmosphere and great service, head to Yakitori Yurippi at Crows Nest.

Having been a frequent customer at Toriciya during the last 8 years, this occasion will be my last!
Donna
Very rude service by the owner , was rushed during meal to finished , how can a family of four with two young children finished 8 dishes in half an hour ? Food is definitely way overrated . How can they called themselves a Japanese restaurant for such a poor service and food quality .
Much better yakitori down at road at crows nest for half the price.
Not even worth one star if I have a choice to give no star.
Veronica Indrawan
Very nice restaurant! It’s a really authentic Japanese restaurant runs by real Japanese people. The scallop and the matcha creme brulee were really good. The matcha was the best that I could find in Sydney. Not to forget the chef was kind enough to explain the fishes and took a picture of us
Strawberry_vee
Toriciya Japanese is an authentic Japanese restaurant situated in Cammeray. Pictured: fresh sashimi platter, daifuku and green tea ice cream. It was a nice surprise to find a strawberry inside the daifuku. We enjoyed the food. There were more food, but I can’t find the pictures :(
HildaLuv2Eat
Love their miso eggplant and grilled sea bass fish head yet the yakitori are very good as well! Authentic japanese little restaurant, eggplant was slightly fried and served with a thick spread of miso sauce on top, the tangy sweet taste made me lick my fingers! The grilled bass fish head was seasoned with salt, the meat was very tender and juicy! Wasnt dry and overcooked at all!
Anthony Brundrit
Food was really nice but owner chef was really rude to me and totally spoilt my dinner, lucky if I ever go back there 🙄

Dessert with the Green tea creme brulee and the daifuku is a must get though 😁
Mister Donut
The staff was rude on the phone and was not helpful with my questions with the menu. Very disappointed with the service so made a bad impression even before i was there.

Really nice authentic Japanese restaurant/sushi bar. Cosy interior (definitely recommend a booking for weekends), very Japanese feel, excellent friendly service. Food is very good (except for the wagyu beef which I found average, and not worth the additional cost). Had the degustation menu, and while expensive, it is really good to get multiple dishes. While each one seems small, I left feeling really full. Seated at the bar, you get to see the sushi chef in action. Truffled cabbage smelled of truffles, but I couldn't really taste it while eating. Service was prompt and attentive (water refilled almost immediately)

Hidden gem of a place in the quiet suburbs of the North Shore. It looked just like an izakaya straight from Japan. There were quite a few tables of Japanese people dining, which is always a good endorsement. We got the degustation plus a couple of extra sides. Way more food then we can fit in, but I saw the chawanmushi in the menu & I just had to try it! The egg mixture was very smooth & subtle seasoning, just enough to highlight the other meat/prawn in the mix. The dishes of the degustation included a variety of Japanese favourites: kingfish sashimi, tempura, wagyu, yakitori skewers, and a trio of sushi. The surprising highlights were the cabbage baked in truffle oil, and the dessert with the fresh strawberry inside the mochi. Most of the other dishes were quite good, except for the yakitori skewers and the agadashi tofu (avoid if ordering a la carte). Overall a very enjoyable dinner.
Grace Yan
We thoroughly enjoyed the food. It is delicious, fresh and very authentic. Everything we had was amazing so will definitely go back to try the other things on the menu. Also don’t underestimate the roasted cabbage with truffle sauce and the matcha brûlée ... heavenly

I have been this restaurant a least 5 times before, but the food quality is dropped so badly and also the service as well. the staff there is so so so RUDE !!
I mad a booking for dinner at 8 pm tonight , me and my friend arrived a little bit earlier at 7:50, so we just went in side want to check if the table is available for us, there was one table is empty and bar table is empty as well , so I asked the waiter if we can come in now ? He is so so so rude, he said if you want come in and sit down it’s not ok , you booking is 8:00 you have to come at 8:00 ! You can sit down on the floor !!! That’s what he said ! And I was so shocked I said I won’t come back at 8 , and than he and chef all very angry and super rude they reply me “ good don’t come back !” That’s the worst Japanese service I have ever experienced in my life! Most Japanese are so kind and nice , I don’t think they are Japanese ! They should feel shame to be rude like this !!! I will never go back to this restaurant!!!!!!! Ever !!!
Rina
We use to dine here quite frequently. However on our recent visit we noticed the food quality has dropped a lot. Ordered Otoro from Tsukiji Market which was very nice but sushi rice was too soft and rice was falling apart. Had scampi sushi and miso soup. Scampi was not fresh. Got charged extra for the soup with scampi head which had no flavors at all. Sadly we won’t be coming back here for a while as the value for money is not worth it.

This was my second experience here in six months. I’ve got to admit that I haven’t yet really been blown away by Japanese cuisine, though the bar has been set extremely high here.

Both times we decided to be bold and choose our own selections from the menu, instead of the set degustations. Notable dishes include - wagyu beef salad, tempura prawns, pork belly skewer, saffron cabbage and sushi platter..

The sushi platter was excellent, hands down the best sushi I have ever had - fish pieces were so thick and did not have any odour to suggest they were not fresh -thoroughly enjoyed!

My favourites had to be the tempura broccoli, duck giblets skewers and tofu. The plum drink was deliciously refreshing, made my night.

The setting was simple and authentic, the hospitality was polite - I wish they would have explained and gave us a bit more understanding of what we were ordering from the menu. The only criticism is that the restaurant is cramped and sitting in a tight position for over an hour and a half was enough for me.

Expected the bill to be a bit less for relatively simple food - have had better overall experiences for $100 per head, especially as we were celebrating a special occasion.

This is one of the best authentic Japanese restaurant in Sydney. The sushi in terms of the rice and the meat are just perfect. Make me feel like travelling back to Japan. The special and chef recommendation are always on the top of the list. This place has a passion for food. Enough say

Really impressed with their food. The standard of food is high. Everything I ordered was made with fresh ingredients that you can taste the difference. I will definitely go back!

What a big disappointment! Came here with my family for my birthday tonight. We ordered the degustation plus 2 ala carte additions. When the second last item was served, this waiter said "Can I serve the dessert now as you got 3 minutes left." The sentence was without question mark as it was indeed not a question. He quickly turned away then served us the dessert. That was 7.57pm. We know that the next seating was at 8pm hence we tried to quickly finish the wagyu steak then continued with the dessert straight away. 3 minutes later, the guy came back again to give us the bill and said "The next customers need to come in soon" while tapping his finger on his watch few times. This guy just can't wait to get rid of us. We quickly paid that second and left in hurry, even without finishing our dessert. We left with indigestion and with feeling of regrets like throwing out 400bucks to the drain. Toriciya, just know that we're not coming back because of that one guy who should be working for train station. Not for hospitality industry at all.

Now this is a sushi restaurant.
The rice and vinegar are both top notch, you won’t find any equal in Sydney. Heck, maybe even Australia as a whole.

The miso soup is nice and very homely tasting. The skewers are charcoal grilled so it has that Smokey flavour.

Hot food wise, I’m not that excited, but the sushi (nigiri) alone is enough for me to give Hiroya San and his restaurant top marks and recommend everyone I know (which I already have) to this venue.

If you cannot taste the difference in the sushi rice here and anywhere else, please try it again. It really is amazing. Oh and ok I lied. The cabbage is frigging amazing. The yuzu ponzu sauce is to die for.

Also, everyone gets excited over salmon and tuna belly... ask for the imperador, also known as kinmedai in Japan. It is absolutely amazing and the friendly staff actually teaches you the proper way to eat sea urchin. Also, the kizakura junmai daiginjo is an amazing Saké for its price. Top shelf grading with an affordable price tag.

Authentic Japanese restaurant with Amazing food and exceptional service! Loved the decor, staff we very friendly food was delicious and well presented and came out fast!
Highly recommend the special baked Mushrooms in miso soup with truffle oil
And loved the green tea creme Brûlée
What a treat! Can't wait to go back

The decor in this place is charming. First impression is that it feels very authentic. Food is wonderful and service very friendly. Tried a variety of yakitori, eggplant, cabbage, sashimi. All very fresh. Lots of sake options.

This restaurant maintains its traditional Japanese vibes from its décor to its menu and we cannot fault it! Having exclusive opening hours from 6 – 10pm, it is important to plan ahead when visiting this hidden gem! Our first dining experience at Toriciya was complimented with their “first timers” degustation menu that consists almost the entire menu with smaller servings (obviously).

To open our palates, baked savoy cabbage was served with truffle oil sauce. There’s not much to say about this besides that it was beautifully simplistic dish that did just what a starter was meant to do… revving up our appetite!

We were then given the sashimi / sushi set that we couldn’t fault, fish was fresh and they had fresh ground wasabi. This was followed by beautifully crumbed tempura set with mandatory tempura dipping sauce and truffle salt on the side for an extra burst of flavour. The Kobe beef steak was cooked medium rare with its distinctive “Kobe” flavour oozing out of its fat.

Finally the dessert….. it was AWESOME! Since we’ve come back from Japan, we have not had the opportunity to indulge in Japanese strawberries until now. The mochi / strawberry dessert was a perfect finish to a wonderful dinner amongst friendly staff. Definitely will be back!
Can't rave about this place enough. This seriously one of the BEST Japanese places in Sydney.

It is incredibly authentic, people are so friendly, food is amazinggggggggly delicious, wonderful variety, great sale selection.

Ambience:second time back to this place, it was all because of the food. The house is a bit old and honestly it's a bit dirty…I was set at the corner and there were a few termites crawling the beam.
Food:food was amazing and fresh, especially the urchin. the yuzu dressing on the scallop is lifting the whole dish to the next level. Japanese Charcoal bbq is of great appetite.
Service: the service was a bit delay and the staffs over there doesn't really offer much attention to the tables

Toriciya resembles a typical neighbourhood izakaya bar with its snug and cozy interior. The captivating tatami, popular Japanese figurines and wooden tables added to its charm. There is even a Sapporo dispenser at the corner of the restaurant!

Toriciya is popular for its range of charcoal grilled skewers or yakitori. I tried their charcoal grilled chicken, pork belly, chicken meat balls, chicken thigh, wagyu beef etc. While the yakitori was delightfully marinated, they are mostly over-grilled and tasted hard and tough.

One of the best Japanese restaurant in Sydney. It always makes me feel like I've travelled to Japan when I'm here. They serve fresh sashimi including my favourite toro and uni !! I also like their skewers which is perfect to have with some sake.

You have to book in advance otherwise there'll be no chance you'll get a table (especially on the weekends) because the place is tiny!
Speed Lee
Small but interesting place, pretty popular and you'd better book before you go. Overall the food are a little bit too salty for me. The kingfish with yozu soy sauce is the most impressive dish. Well balanced and full of flavor.

What an amazing little gem!!!! Hidden away on the street of Cammeray, this place is small busy cozy and really does have an amazing ambiance with its Japanese decor. The food was just phenomenal - I couldn't fault any of the dishes we ordered. scallops, King fish, chicken and pork belly skewers, wagyu beef, lobster and cabbage topped off with green tea creme Brûlée! I am salivating just writing this. A must try everyone and make sure you book!!!

Returned to Toriciya last night for the first time in 2 years - the service and the food as always is fantastic. We loved the char grilled prawns, sashimi mixed plate and the chicken yakitori. The restaurant once had a cozy ambience to hide away from the winter chill, but is now brightly lit. Perfectly for Instagram but unfortunately has killed the vibe of restaurant.
Mimi Xiao
Had my best Japanese cuisine experience in Toriciya. Wonderful sushi, especially the toro, and the pork belly skewer was cooked fabulously. Staffs are nice friendly and have provided a satisfactory service during the visit.
Julie Mei
Seriously the best traditional Japanese food ever! Everything we ordered was very fresh. Decor was cute. Service was great! 10/10!
Recommended to order the chicken skin skewers and sashimi.

One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in town! I love there aburi sushi platter and skewers. You must check out their daily special menu when you come here. The service is always impressive here.
Bernard
They now have minimum spend of 50 per person. Very small and cramped place. Food is not memorable at all. Won't be going back. Torciya at Crows Nest below average.
Andy Cheng
By Sydney standard it is certainly a 5 out of 5 Japanese restaurant, probably the best in town. Quality of the pork belly skewer is kinda unstable but it is absolutely great when it is at its peak. It must be serving hot.

Ah, what is it like to walk through sliding wooden doors and pass a curtain?

Feels like Omen noodle in Kyoto if you ask me, absolutely Nostalgia.

Now you may all think i am. another one of them yuppies who are die hard fans of Japan culture and I may be, but i appreciate service and quality. Japanese do it well as they have processes. Processes generate consistency and kaizen.

My Japanese executives swear by it and so do I when I see an authentic Japanese restaurant vs a psuedo Japanese one run by a bunch of FDI students (oxidized tuna if not beetroot dyed white fish) or Koreans (Japanese dont use red garnish).

Toriciya is genuinely unique. Its cramped like them two seater izakayas in osaka and kyoto laneways but its real.

However, if you were to compare the skewers with Jugemu, Juges wins hands down. The idea of Toriciya is not so much the food as pure izas go its more about the guzzle. The grog the oh so delicate warm sake and trunks of asahi or sapporo and golden river bottles of 4.5%ers.

The airconditioning at the bar table is a little strong, best to bring a coat, the reservations needless to say for a small alley way sized eatery must be made. The grills are the best and the croquettes the seafood scallops say, are juicy (i bet defrosted hokkaidos) and the dessert, skip it.

Ambience is tops, food is... well if you were really Japanese, would you come here...? Probably but komaru would be better although its just hapu sushi and not yakitori.

So, if you are up for a suburbia kinda chin wager night and you got a bit kaching and bling in the belt Toriciya is definitely the place to warm up to the weekend.

Toriciya is an incredibly little Izakaya well hidden in Cammeray, in Sydney's lower North Shore. The menu is extensive, featuring daily specials and a solid degustation menu. For $60 per head, the degustation is good value for money, providing a varied selection of the highlights of the menu. The kingfish carpaccio with jalapeño and yuzu soy is particularly outstanding and easily beats Sake's take on the dish. Sushi servings are also generous and wonderfully fresh.

In terms of drinks, Toriciya has an impressive range of sakes to choose from, and the menu is particularly adept at describing the different types on offer. Sake generally comes in 180ml to 1800mls, with the latter giving you the luxury of choosing your own cup. Beers and soft drinks are also on offer.

The restaurant itself has a wonderful vibe - decked out in a traditional Izakaya style with lovely trinkets and art works spread throughout. The service is attentive and very friendly indeed, which only makes the food even better. This place gives many upmarket, established Japanese restaurants a solid run for their money.

This place is well worth the visit - be sure to make a booking and be mindful of the $50 minimum spend per person.

Went with my partner and I for a dinner service. We ordered a sushi plate, their famous toro and sea urchin and some other skewers which tasted very similar to the ones we had back in Japan. The taste of all fresh ingredients are undeniably one of the best for Japanese food in Sydney. Slightly expensive and minimum spend for each person is $50. Would be ideal to come here with more people to try other items on the menu.
Ebonyandlace
Don't like it, won't be returning.
Been hearing people singing the praises of this place since my last visit, so decided to give it another chance. The sashimi was alright, but not spectacular; agedashi tofu was not good; grilled fish head was ok, but also didn't stand out; lobster tempura wasn't fried enough; the ox tongue sauce was too, too sweet; and.. I don't like okra rice (it wasn't my order but yes, that is just a personal preference).

The sashimi was probably the 'saving' grace, but if I wanted good sashimi, I would go straight to Crows Nest.

Everything was great, but compared to its price, and other Japanese restaurants in the same price range, it's just not there yet.

Taste: 4/5
Presentation: 3.8/5
Service: 3/5
Atmosphere: 3.5/5
Price Range: 85pp
Location: 2/5
Overall Rating: 2.5/5 compared to its price range

1 - Terrible
2 - Not very good
3 - Nothing impressive
4 - Enjoyable
5 - Excellent

Make sure to make a reservation. Everything we ordered was super delicious and the warm sake was so good. Service is friendly. Only downside is the price. Bill came to about $200 for 2 people and we weren't insanely full.

Toriciya is a restaurant I have been recommended to try by multiple friends and it most certainly did not disappoint. The restaurant was located in an unassuming, suburban street in Cammeray but once inside, it felt like we had dropped into an izakaya bar in bustling Tokyo. The narrow dining room had a certain warmth to it and I loved how the walls were adorned with different designs of sake bottles and cups.
Monica
An authentic Japanese Izakaya style restaurant in suburban Cammeray.
Book for sushi counter to have the best value in town sushi omakase (leave it to the chef) - you gotta be open minded to try new things (we had John Dory liver, agedashi sesame tofu, pickled wasabi leaf) and you will not be dissapointed.
Very fresh seafood here and their yakitori offerings are excellent as well.
Michiyo. Sukie Yeung
Food is good! Sashimi, sushi, especially sea urchin are very good. Others are kinda over price. I just dislike the fact they got $50 pp min charge.
I added the photos.
Richard Universe
To be told that there is a $50 minimum spend per person is just ridiculous. The food was okay.

Awesome place to be when in Sydney. This Japanese restaurant is very nicely decorated with super friendly staff. Quality of food is excellent, large variety, guarantee fresh, and very consistent. I love their sushi platters and their mixture of different skewers. Been here twice before and will not hesitate to return again next time I'm in Sydney. Their udon & ramen are also very delicious and never cheap-out on their ingredients. Great atmosphere and ambiance to the place, thumbs up!
Mathiar
Great little Japanese place that is actually owned and run by Japanese people!
Pretty cool how you get to pick you sake cup and bottle from their collection, adds a quirky touch.
The food was great though! The sashimi was super fresh and the yakitori had an amazing smoky flavor to it.
Highly recommended and will definitely go back!
Tosmaky
Moderately priced small Japanese restaurant that delivers on some of its dishes.

Highlights were the Blue-Fin Tora and Black Cod which melted in my mouth.

If you love Japanese food you have got to visit Toriciya, a tiny restaurant in Cammeray known for their yakitori but also for the glorious otoro tuna belly.
Dafoodjunkie
Best Japanese restaurant so far.
We turned up at 8.30. The place is full on a tuesday night. This is our first time here so we tried their special of the day menu.
Best impression is the raw Hokkaido scallop. Its so fresh and tender. I can taste the sweetness of the scallop..
Its not cheap at the end but the food is so good.

Our first post for 2015 is about a little local gem we discovered recently when our friends came to visit from HK. Toriciya is a small, traditional looking sake and yakitori restaurant nestled in a quiet suburban street in Cammeray. Unassuming and cosy, the restaurant surprises you with its high quality food and attentive service.
Cc_delectablydegusting
Toriciya, established in 1991, is one of Sydney’s first authentic yakitori bar style Japanese restaurants. The term “Yakitori”, used interchangeably with kushiyaki, refers to skewered or grilled food. Yakitori bars are very commonly seen in the streets of Japan and are popular places for casual after work snacks and drinks. Often they are small restaurants with bar style seating, offering yakitori dishes as well as a range of alcoholic drinks such as sake and shochu.

It has been over a year since I last reviewed Toriciya, and I thought I would see if anything has changed. And whilst the specials menu is always changing, the standard of the food is, luckily, still the same. The pickled wasabi leaves have made its way onto the regular menu. The seafood is as fresh and delicious as ever. The skewers of crispy chicken skin are a must and for all those on a liberal diet, the specials of sticky roasted pork belly with all its glorious fat should not be missed. The Brussels sprouts were a bit confusing, on the one hand the flavours were nice with the curry salt, but on the other, it was quite a heavy dish. The grilled eggplant was also good but quite bland unless dipped in the soy sauce. It is always interesting to dine out with people that you don't usually eat with, as they choose items that you normally wouldn't. Udon, to me, is such a standard, uninteresting dish. But at Toriciya, t he clean flavours from the bonito flakes in the dashi and the handma

Its Wednesday night, the weather is gloomy, what to do I like the sound of a cosy Japanese Restaurant drinking copious amounts of warm miso soup (or Sake if you will). I had read countless fantastic reviews on Toriciya which is typically somewhat promising. Does anyone else base their restaurant selection around reviews? I know, I know, It’s such a bad habit of mine! Regardless of Sydney's current weather, lets kick the night off with one of my favourite beers! Kir

As soon as I split open the croquette and the crab cream aroma came out - my stomach expanded immediately. The heavenly combination of crab, carrot, onion, cream and cheese made my eyes sparkle with joy. This is the best croquettes I've ever had!!!

Located amongst a small strip of restaurants in Cammeray, Toriciya is a hidden gem hidden behind an unassuming facade... Overall we had a flawless night at Toriciya, filled with authentic well-cooked dishes. The highlights from the night though would have to be the sashimi, quail eggs, kingfish wing and the oven baked cabbage. We did not have a chance to try out their sake menu that night, but will have to go back to try and pair some of their extensive sake options with their yakitori menu.
Excuse Me Waiter
Nestled away from the main strip of Cammeray’s shops is a little Japanese eatery by the name of Toriciya. Although it’s off the beaten track, Toriciya seems to have built up quite a following, as the small space eventually gets packed out on a Wednesday night. Toriciya’s offering is a simple, homely affair – the basic wooden decor with Japanese art on the wall hints at the authenticity of its dishes and you can see the chefs busily at work in the cosy open kitchen where they’re grilling a variety of skewers. They’re also known for their sake, so we order a small jug of warm cloudy sake to try and find that it’s quite strong, but with interesting undertones of rice. Cloudy sake, $15 for 180ml We start with a couple of their specials from their handwritten menu – the Popcorn Lobster is a deluxe hit of succulent lobster bits encased in a light batter and paired with an addictive smoky chilli aioli that was quite unexpected in such a traditional looking Japanese restaurant. This is undoubtedly one of our favourite restaurants serving an incredible range of Sake and Shochu, with the most authentic Japanese food you will find in Sydney. Toriciya is an Izakaya style restaurant which is best described as a Japanese tapas bar, whereby the menu revolves around enhancing and complimenting the vast varieties of Sake and Shochu on offer.

The first thing you notice about Toriciya is the entrance. It's not the physical facade -- Spanish villa arches in a cafe latte brown--but the act of entering the door itself. A heavy glass-paneled sliding door utters a quiet shuuushhh as you slide it ope

It was definitely a enjoyable meal and the service was helpful and deferential. It became clear that the restaurant was not-so-secret after all because it filled up quite quickly on a Friday night, so it’s good to get in early. It didn’t end up being the cheapest meal (we spent around $45pp incl drinks) but the food was delicious and the whole experience made for a great night!

I would have to agree with the disgusting service reviews about this restaurant. We made a booking for Saturday night at 8pm. We were late due to a taxi but I called ahead and let them know.
We walked in, we're not greeted but were rushed past by about 3-4 different staff until we physcially had to stand infront of them to be acknowledged that we were standing there. After being seated we were given one menu to share for 3 people... The staff including the chefs had NO interest in us being there. Not sure if it was them being racist or just not caring. The atmosphere was terrible, which was odd considering it looked very much the part. What a shame to have to look forward to this, pay for a cab there and be treated like we don't exist. Needless to say that we walked out as we couldn't even get the staff to take a drink order. Off to Wagaya in Haymarket with their very friendly, lightening fast service and delicious food instead.

Love the sake list.. It is an awesome place for Yakitori and sake. Not the sushi.

Great food but horrible service. First off like everyone said here the food is amazing

What ruined this experience however was the service, absolutely disgraceful, the head chef seemed to not like us at all, he said hello when we entered and proceeded to ignore us completely afterwards. It seemed like we offended him the moment we sat down at the table. He never spoke to us, only to the Japanese couple next to us and when they left he disappeared. A while later An Aussie couple sat down and he was back and chatting away with them. However he did not seem to want to acknowledge us at all. He prepared all the sashimi we ordered but instead of giving it directly to us (we were sitting right in front of him at the counter seats) he walked away and put it down on the side table for the waitress to give to us. For the Japanese and Aussie couple they got the food directly from him, I'm not sure why me sitting right next to them was that much harder.

At one point he was talking to the waitress in a very angry tone, then gestured towards us. This was the last straw for me, bad manners is one thing but to talk about me in another language when you're only two metres in front of me is ridiculous. I should note that at this point I've still had zero interaction with him aside from the initial hello.

I should correct my initial statement the remaining staff attitude was fine, I had no problem with them throughout the night.

Oh and another correction the sashimi platter (30 pieces plus 3 scampi) was a letdown, the cuts were average and i could not count 30 pieces there. Better option is to just order the types of sashimi you want, recommend sea urchin, scampi and o toro, ordered them separately and they were great.

Lobster popcorn was great as well as the skewers and dessert was surprisingly good.

Amazingly authentic. Never having heard of this place before, but getting a rave reccomendation, I had high hopes when going in. The place looks the part - like it's been scooped out of Japan and settled into Australian suburbia... and the awesome does not stop at the decor. Beautiful food - the sushi/sashimi was probably the best & freshest I've had in Sydney for quite some time. The yakitori was beautifully cooked and tender. The savoy cabbage was deliciously yum. And my daifuku rounded out the meal well! Lovely staff and quick service. Definitely book - we had a hard time getting a booking on a Thursday night, and there were about 5 people that walked in and were turned away because of the full house.

Came here on a Sunday evening without a reservation, and we were lucky to get a table at the bar immediately. The restaurant is very small, so reservations are recommended.
One of the best Japanese restaurants in Sydney. The sushi was probably some of the freshest I've had the opportunity to have in my entire life. The yakitori were amazingly flavoursome, tender and cooked to perfection. The other dishes I tried included kingfish jalapeno carpaccio, baked cabbage with truffle oil sauce, tasmanian freshwater eel skewer and chicken cartillage. Chicken cartillage was probably the most average dish of all, nothing special, but everything else was great.
The decor is very traditional and the service is good. Overall I really enjoyed dining at Toriciya and will definitely be back to try other things on their menu.

I really enjoyed our meal here. A nice, cozy spot in Cammeray with a wide selection of sake and lots of fresh food. I had the Savoy Cabbage (lovely and flavorful) and some grilled fish (real fresh). Though it can be a tad pricey, I would eat there again.

Amazing, elegant, confident but most importantly incredibly flavorsome food. This is a seriously good restaurant!

This was one of my best ever Japanese dinning experiences I have ever had. Food was simply presented but the taste was simply amazing! And the sake. Wow, I have never seen such a huge range of hard to find sake anywhere in Australia. This place is a must try for any lover of food and even more so if you are a fan of sake.

Food has gone downhill since the change of owners... Pity

TORIFFIC. After living in Cammeray for eigth years and driving straight past the unassuming little entrance at least serveral times a week, little did I know what I was missing out on.
As I walked through the front door I was warmly greeted in true Japanese style by what I guess was every member of the staff and shown to my seat for what I later found out to be one the most outstanding feeding experiences at this level.
The waiter was friendly, knowledgeable, always smiling and made me feel most welcome. I was presented with the menu and specials board in which excited me beyond all comprehension with it's traditional and slightly unusual options - I WANT THE LOT!
I started with some fresh Toro sushi. Long, thick and generous strips of beautiful Tuna belly lying on a little bed of well formed, well seasoned sushi rice, the way it should be and the complete opposite of those hideous, non traditional takeaway sushi holes that serve sushi with a shaving of aquatic matter sitting on top of some old crusty rice the size of Ayres Rock.
I asked the person next to me what dish they were attacking, the reply was baked cabbage. Who eats baked cabbage? Bring it to me I asked with a please. Wow, what a delightful surprise and I urge anyone to try it.
Port Stephens white bait was next in the queue, larger than those delighful little New Zealand modules however they are fantasic. A light, very crisp tempura batter constricting a fresh, plump and patient looking fish ready for dunking into a nicely balanced ponzu - highly satisfactory.
Black rock cod arrives cooked two ways. One with sake and the other with miso, both of which do not come close to overpowering the flavour of the fish . I have never put anything so perfectly cooked in my mouth - THIS IS A MUST HAVE DISH!
Wagyu is next off the press and doesn't disappoint. A marbling score of 7, a little Japanese sause which I should have enquired about and little blow torching brings this dish alive - a pleasure to eat and again so well balanced.
My adventure continued with another three dishes all of which were recieved with a standing ovation, if the noises that I was making while chewing were anything to go by one would assume that I was having a truly fine time.
Toriciya is a must for anyone that likes a more traditional approach to Japanese cuisine. Their sake selection appears quite extensive however I am no sake expert. This is a hidden gem and in the words of The Iron Chef - 'BANG THE GONG IT IS ON'

Great sake and grilled meats! Excellent!

Authentic Japanese, great service. Not cheap though, as I spent a little bit more than $50. Really good sake & shochu.
