I’d do 6 stars if I could. Great vibe at this place. Excellent play list and super friendly staff who seem to enjoy being there. Best coffee I had in Canberra and I do think a serious coffee shop should offer a choice of blends. Three were offered to me and I chose Black Betty. Awesome. Excellent food as well. Pleased I made the effort to find it and I’d love to go back but my plane leaves today! But if I could open a place in the UK it’d be a lot like this.
Excellent food & great coffee - perhaps one of the best coffee's I've ever had !, friendly & attentive staff.
Highly recommend the 'salted caramel shake' sooo delicious.
If i'm in the city i will usually always stop by here for a coffee as they're made to perfection. The first time i had a meal was a Chicken burger and it was great quality at a decent price. Could not fault the place.
Had a great breakfast there this morning. Nice service, bacon and egg roll was delicious, so was the chia tea, 9 yr old loved the French toast with ice cream and syrup. Fussy wife was even happy, I actually picked somewhere she liked.
I wish this place was operating when I went to the ANU many moons ago. What a fantastic place! Great food, great people, great atmosphere. Must go!
Three visits within 24 hours signifies a winner! Friendly staff who recognised us as repeat offenders each time, flavoursome coffee & a breakfast menu to die for - thanks for providing the whole shebang. Likely we'll be visiting again tomorrow.... 😃
The best cafe service and food I have had in town. Coffee is great and the awesome staff were really accommodating in organising pram access for our young baby. Thank you :)
Coffee 10/10. Its a true reflection of the years of hard work Sasa has put into Ona.
This place is busy for a good reason.... coffee, food, staff, and atmosphere are all
Service was great and the food was delicious. Had the Avo breakfast; the combination of flavours was amazing especially the labna and dukkha with the avocado and sourdough bread. Definitely would recommend
We went there in our trip to Canberra, we ordered chicken burger and their special French toast, I must say “Best French toast I’ve ever tasted. The burger was super as well. Staff were Super friendly, all in all, highly recommended.
Great cafe using Ona coffee, so the coffee here is quality. Get there early, for the wait is long if you want to dine. So we just had coffee. Prices in Canberra are steep for coffees, at $5.50
no booking in advances but staff was helpful even we are a group of 10, was able to take order for us 14 secs before kitchen close, like their dedication in customer services, we told them theres a birthday among us, they said they could offer candles. menu selection was limited due to covid.
We have visited this cafe a couple of times now and probably tried everything on their menu which is vegetarian. The Black Forest french toast was just amazing. It was so fluffy and not overly sweet. Their medley of mushrooms too is one of favourites.
Overall a great cafe can get really busy but the staff are lovely and food gets delivered really quick.
The foods here were great, in general, and the sauce and seasoning here do seperate them from other Brunch cafe.
I had heard so much about The Cupping Room and it certainly lived up to the hype.
The coffee is excellent and the waiting staff are on the ball with helping you choose their house blends. I chose the ‘Black Betty’ which was a full bodied coffee with notes of chocolate and malt.
Now on to the food. One word excellent. I rarely order French Toast as it can be too sickly sweet. Their French Toast (pictured) was perfect - not too sweet, perfect amount of fruit and I loved the Oreo crumb. The Fritters (pictured) made with ham hock were a crummy. I loved that they were served with a spicy szechuan mayo.
I will be back when I visit Canberra again. #cuppingroom
Amazing food! My husband and I had to wait 30 mins for a table on Sunday but it was worth it! Top place for brunch in Canberra for sure 😊🙏🏻
Amazing food and service. Highly recommended.
Mushroom on weekend menu is really good! Love the 63 degree poached egg!!
Kian very generously wrote down a list of bars, restaurants and cafes to try in Canberra after he learnt that I was visiting for the first time. He pointed to Bar Rochford as the best bar in Australia in 2018 as voted by the Gourmet Traveller. Perhaps best cafe in Australia should go to The Cupping Room. Killer coffee and possibly the best smashed avo I’ve ever had. Its 4.9 rating on Zomato is truly well-deserved and it would have the top cafes in Melbourne shaking in their boots if it ever decided to open up over there.
Perfect poached egg. Thick cut chorizo. Coffee is smooth and not too acidic. Friendly staff. Will want to try the Avo next time.
One of my favourite cafe in Canberra, beautiful and relaxing space, the coffee is always amazing, and the food menu always interesting and delicious, with friendly service.
Promise me you will only order their avo and French toast. The quality of other dishes are not guaranteed... But avo is always good! ONA coffee is also recommended!
Went on a quiet Day morning but this place got busy already when we reached. Beautiful food and drinks. Service was so so as they were quite busy, so sometimes you got ignored
Ordered the Salmon we were wondering if there is going to be any carbs in it - turns out we forgot about the scotch egg (which is also a part of the whole salmon theme - you’ll see)! Very nice and balanced flavor overall. Tried the 70% mocha as well, it really tastes more like a cup of molten dark chocolate than coffee (which I personally quite liked)
According to my friends chicken burger > rib burger.
Will definitely come back to this busy little place next time I visit Canberra!
Read great things about the coffee here so had to give it a try when we visited Canberra. Coffee was excellent, my breakfast was great, my wife was less impressed with hers but I loved mine, both had extra coffee to take away.
While travelling in Canberra... we visited this cafe expectant and was sufficiently impressed. Great coffee. Top service. Fantastic food and good vibes. Highly recommend it!!!
We had breakfast here after Anzac Day dawn service. There was a queue to get in but it was all good to wait and we had a seat in no time. The service was friendly and the avocado smash was generous and yummy. Lovely atmosphere. Good good. Good service.
Visited Canberra for a long weekend and I had this brunch place pinned down as one of the places to visit. There was a 10-15 minute wait on a Saturday morning and the place was packed with people which is always a good sign. The food was pretty good and the presentation on the plate and service was pleasant. Definitely visit if you are in Canberra
Probably my all up favourite café in all of our time in Canberra!!! It's so popular, but the food is nothing short of incredible and the staff were so lovely. Highly recommended!!
It’s the best. Coffee curation is perfect. Food is amazing. Passionate dedication to customer service every time I’ve been here. Can’t fault anything.
16/1/2019 had the avocado dish and it was cooked very well. What I like about this place is they use very unique flavorings to jazz up brunch classics. Well done guys.
Well deserved high rating. Excellent coffee and friendly, knowledgeable staff. They served the food quickly and it was absolutely delicious, the mushrooms were the mushroomiest I have ever tasted! Generous potions and perfectly cooked scrambled and poached eggs.
Visiting Canberra from Melbourne, we love the cafe culture and were really impressed to find The Cupping Room.
On a warm day it was beautiful to have the windows opened to bring together inside and outside, and a great vibe.
Raspberry and white chocolate coffee was fantastic, and not too sweet.
Salmon tartare was an outstanding dish with the greens, puffed rice, capers and pickled fennel. Flavours worked well together and a good contrast of flavours and textures.
I gave the dish 9 out of 10, as the dressing was a little salty for me.
Would have also loved to see the addition of a cracker to scoop up the salmon.
That being said, I would order this again, and just ask for less dressing.
Highly recommend a visit, great food and coffee, and customer service.
We joined the cue of eager, regular patrons outside The Cupping Room in Civic at 9am on a Saturday morning. The vibe was good.
We had kids french toast (vanilla ice cream with egg and bread and maple syrup); and bacon and egg roll, a chicken katsu burger with wasabi aioli. Beverage wise, my daughter had a kids chocolate milkshake/smoothie and we ordered coffee. Which was standout.
You pick your blend of beans and they make it with full cream milk. None of the usual flat white vs latte etc. That day we decided to try their milk based Ethiopia Jasper 0818. It was a flavoursome blend of medium depth. Perfect for me as I don’t like acidic or fruity or Columbian flavours in my coffee. I have tried them... i just prefer a more depth. But if you do like those notes in your coffee beans then they do have that available for you to choose too.
Located near Australian National University Canberra, The Cupping Room is easy to find but a very difficult place in which to get parking! It could’ve been that I am not familiar with the area. We clocked a $140 fine for exceeding our parking by 9min. So if you are planning to head there do make time to find parking.
Of you do like a good coffee and atmosphere it is worth paying this place a visit.
Came here a few years ago and revisited today
The cafe always has creative seasonal menus.
Ordered Black Betty (Coffee with chocolate) and Hot Chocolate. The coffee menu is actually ONA coffee menu. It is the same as the cafe ONA in Manuka
French toast is always so good here as it’s puffy and creamy and tastes like pudding. It’s just I don’t like the rhubarb mousse on it. The rhubarb mousse is also in the Chia pudding I ordered. So I only finished the chia part and left the rhubarb mousse. The rhubarb mousse was tasteless and thin. I hope they can change it to coconut yogurt or other mousse.
Egg and bacon roll was good and I like it.
I’m really not a fan of haloumi and regretted that I ordered it only because they looked delicious in the photo...The dipping source was good though.
The service was excellent and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The person who took our order has a really good sense of humour. He was really nice.
A little like The Grounds vibes in Sydney. The Salmon was nice and clean, worked well with the egg and salad. The pork belly burger was pretty juicy with flavour and the chips were nice! However, I would have liked the cracker a bit softer since it was quite hard to bite into after a while. But the milkshake and juice was good! The salted Carmel shake and popcorn was full of flavour and so did the grapefruit, apple, lime & basil juice! (Pricey but tried it since we were there)

This place is just in front of ANU.we went to Canberra for a day trip and had breakfast there as it’s recommended on lonely planet. It’s very popular compared to other places in Canberra. The food tastes quit good and coffee is decent too. Just it’s Sunday’s surcharge of 10% seems a bit unfair and too expensive.
The food is really quality stuff, but be warned, it IS expensive. You’ll have to wait for seats, especially in the morning. Not somewhere where you would eat till your full but worth going for a bite.
Good coffee. Really good coffee. Good menu however some interesting dishes already sold out for Monday lunch by 12:30. Quick pleasant service. Tasty food, but not really exceptional.
Warm friendly space, efficient hospitable staff who provide terrific service. Great menu and fabulous coffee. We tried three different coffee, all exceptional, and took home packets of two others. We will be back for more when next in Canberra.
Lovely place - cool ambience, friendly and efficient service, and really delicious brunch food! Milkshakes and smoothies were amazing too. Highly recommend.
When I first arrived, everybody kept telling me about cupping room to try their coffee. I would say that the coffee is pretty good but it is so crowded and hard to find seats.
Got there on a Sunday morning at around 9:20am and only waited for like 10min. The French toast is both good looking and tasty - can be a little bit too sweet for me at the end though (so it would be nice to have someone go with you and you could order 1 sweet & 1 savory). The flat white tastes amazing too.
Their coffee reputation is not a joke. I tried their special flat white - I cant remember the name of the beans but it has a chocolate scent on it. It was very smooth and quite perfect.
The food would be perfect if only the tofu inside the veggie burger wasn’t so salty. I should mention the fries was tasty and the portion was satisfying though 👌🏻.
I’ll definitely come back to try more☕️
Went for lunch after reading the high reviews and was not dissappointed - in fact our expectations were exceeded. The staff were so warm and friendly - taking the time to give advice on what to see and do and not rushing us even though there was a queue of people waiting for tables. Ordered a latte and was given the choice of three different coffee beans!!!!!! Chose the caramel blend and it was divine. I ordered the smashed avo: generous serve, perfectly balanced with dukkah and pomegranate seeds and topped with the creamiest labna. My friend ordered the pork belly benedict (she loved the flavours but felt the fried egg and herbed sauce that accompanied the pork belly and slaw salad did not connect very strongly with the traditional concept of benedict). Highly recommend the Cupping Room for breakfast, brunch or lunch.
The Cupping Room probably is the best and most popular cafe for brunch in Canberra.
Even came early morning, there was a long time waiting to be seated. The waiting time was that bad though.
The coffee they served was really nice. They had three different coffee beans scored differently and suitable for different coffee types. So ask staff for help to choose best coffee beans for your favourite coffee. The hot chocolate was nice, smooth and foamy too.
#market fish of the day#-grilled fish fillet served with crab prawn&corn makhni(bean creamy sauce), poached egg and alfalfa and crispy seaweed. Most expensive dish on the menu but it tasted really good! The fish had this beautiful crispy skin and tender meat. I loved the seafood, corn and bean sauce! Flavours were perfectly balanced with hint of sweetness from the corn. Great dish for winter but the portion was small.
#pork belly benedict#-crispy pork belly served with fried egg, kimchi hollandaise, pickled slaw. It was different than I expected. Literally there was a big piece of crispy skin pork belly on my plate! Probably need to order some extra bread to have with it. The skin of the pork belly was really crispy and crunchy with perfectly seasoning. However, the meat was kind of tough and not tender enough. The airy and foamy kimchi hollandaise was a highlight as well.
Beautiful food here - the smoked labna was delicious and a really nice twist on smashed avo. The slightly tangy/spicy dukkah was a great touch too. Seems like they’ve really thought about their menu. Great coffee too.
The best brunch ever! Everything is so amazing!!! I feel like we definitely will drive to Canberra again just for The Cupping Room. Highly recommend its coffee and French toast.
Again another master piece served on the plate. I love Aussie breakfast! The coffee again was perfect with the smashed avo and the cauliflower dish on the table. Must try should be the cauliflower dish! The place was super busy and definitely it is for a reason.
Ambience - 4/5
Food - 5/5
Value for Money - 4/5
Service - 4/5
When I saw a 4.9 average I was almost taken aback. Surely not in the heart of Canberra would my highest ranked restaurant be found. Arrived at 7.30 for breakfast and the locals were thick in there with only a couple of seats left outside. Sunny morning called for those to be our launching pad.
I went to order the usual ‘magic’ but was told they roast their beans in a way that was more appropriate to have it in another way. Ordered the ‘black betty’ instead and loved the chocolate deep flavours. Ordered the Avo which came out and had generous proportions. Eggs cooked perfectly and the labne smoked to perfection. Delicious dukkha sprinkled all over. Not one thing wrong with it. A friend had summer fruits on a bed of ricotta accompanied by the most delicious of syrups. The figs were a knockout.
Service was happy and knowledgeable.
I simply couldn’t take any points away. Bravo, The Cupping Room. Bravo. Brett Atley
Edit: came back a second day. Had the salmon with cold boiled egg which was reminiscent of a salmon tartare. Amazing. Friends had the pork belly with kimchi- delicious, French toast - lovely, fig and banana on toast- smashing. Waiter even asked if there was anything that the chef could do to make it better. Fantastic service.
So much hype for this place so I thought, I gotta try here too lol.
Since hub and I were already in Canberra spending time for aniv, we thought, why not try here for brunch before we head back to Syd.
Place was packed inside, so sat outside instead, which was nice as no much people walking by (hate it when you eat and too many people walk by your side). Anyway, yes so it was a beautiful day, friendly staff, instagram-worthy food. I love my chia, they've put fresh fruits and roasted granola on top, lovely! wasn't able to finish though, it's a big serving!!! And I had the pancake too which was swimming in syrup, sickening sweet.. Burger was nice, chips were crispy and yum.
Overall I liked it here, will probably come back next time we visit Canberra.
I went here twice during my four day visit to Canberra as the service was warm and the staff were accomodating. The food was delicious and the coffee was lovely. I thoroughly enjoyed my overall experience and would definitely recommend the cafe to friends.
Our go to place for brunch, best service, best food, best atmosphere and best coffees. Only reason I gave it 4 stars is because they don’t serve almond milk with there coffee!!!
Love the burger, coffee and almond slice. Chips were crunchy and fresh. Friendly staff. Didn’t wait for long for a table although there was a line already. Highly recommended.
They provide Great service and amazing food. Pork belly is the best. The Avo is pretty cool, beyond average for sure. The choice is quite limited.

Cupping is the process coffee graders use to judge the merit of different coffees. Graders rate each coffee by body, sweetness, flavour, acidity and aftertaste. Using a similar process to rate the cafes I visit, I’m struck by the fact that if I’d written up The Cupping Room before eating a week of Northern Rivers café breakfasts, I probably would have graded it more highly. This week has taught me that it’s possible to produce a good-looking breakfast that will slay on Instagram, but also eats cohesively as an utterly compelling (and well-priced) plate of food. At The Cupping Room, dishes like Chorizo ($20) read well on the menu, and arrive looking intriguing with crumbed chorizo, a single fried egg, rounds of twice-cooked potato, heirloom tomatoes, a Romesco-style red sauce, yoghurt and strangely textured corn chips. To eat, on the other hand, it was curiously dissatisfying. It lacked...
The menu at the cupping room constantly changes, and some menus are better than others. While they are usually great, you may get unlucky. But one thing that never changes - great coffee and lovely service.
They also cater really well to dietary requirements.
Usually busy, so be prepared to wait for a table.
The line was out the door, they made seats by putting chairs near the bar so that's where we sat. The "poached" eggs were solid in the inside and did not drip. Don't get me started on the 8$ Sunday surcharge!
I'm here to travel in Canberra for 2 days, and I've eaten in this place twice, I'd say it definitely worths a try, tbh it is a bit pricy tho, don't think french toasts worth 18 dollars but since it tastes pretty good who cares. (Compare to other high rating brunch places the price is similar)
I went for takeaway breakfast and while it was slow I enjoyed my peanut butter toast which thankfully was loaded with peanut butter. The mango and coconut smoothie was actually a frappe with no dairy and loads of ice which was disappointing but it was still delicious. I can't wait to go and sit down there for some of their yummy breakfast

The Cupping Room is well situated in the heart of Canberra and has some interesting tastes to offer.
Although significantly overhyped (but well priced), the Cupping Room is worth checking out once atleast. I have been there a couple of times with a large group of friends and have been impressed by the prompt service.
Would recommend checking this place out once but would also recommend keeping away from the hot chocolate.
I have heard the big hype about 'The Cupping Room' and it is definitely worth a visit. It gets super busy, got in at 8:20am on a weekend and just nabbed one of the few tables left. There was already a fair queue by the time we left at 9:30am. Great energy from the staff and options on the menu were interesting. Takeaway is available too if you can't wait around for a table. Enjoyed a twice cooked potato breakfast meal which was delicious however temperature was kinda luke warm which wasn't right for me. I also had a Bonsoy Spiced Chai which was perfectly flavoured, strong and not too overly sweet. My friend enjoyed a chai pudding which was beautifully presented and portions were decent enough. I will 100% be back to try more!
Amazing coffee and perfectly cooked eggs. The smashed avo was amazing. Even though it was a cold morning we sat outside, but the heaters on the roof made it feel like summer - no issue at all. The only fault is that they do fill up quickly and there was a waiting line most of the time we were there so you don't feel like you can hang around longer than you eat. Not ideal if you want to catch up with friends or family over a meal.
Stopped by this really great cafe for breakfast before our road trip back to Melbourne. We were in a hurry and the staff were very efficient and super friendly. The french toast was delicious and aesthetically pleasing. It definitely filled us up!
I'm not sure if it's the return of the sun and the season change, or just a renewed enthusiasm, but The Cupping Room has really stepped up its game again. Now offering reserve grade teas with great provenance, and a refreshed menu with a great balance of original and new with classics and hangover cures and more system in the table queuing on a Saturday morning, it's definitely back on the regular rotation in CBR.
I had the French toast, on the current menu riffed with mandarin 3 ways and milk chocolate notes, excellently balanced. The oolong tea was perfectly infused (and god do I hate ruining good leaves) and brought back for a second infusion.
Do it, get back to TCR.
One of the hippest place in Canberra! Never ever come at Saturday lunch time unless you are willing to wait for 40 minutes to get seat. This place offers you the best coffeeeee! Ona of course, Canberrian pride! I always ordered black betty. For lunch, I ordered cheese burger without bacon and it was delicious. Good food and good coffee = perfect saturday
Market fish - love the source and the fish so I ordered extra toast to finish it ;) the place is very busy during lunchtime on a weekday. Thanks very much
Lives up to the hype! Flavours to die for - crafted with aesthetic creativity and to be savoured with a sip-worthy velvety coffee. Take your time here and soak up the hip avo-culture vibe. Staff are fun, warm, and welcoming.
We had to wait for a table for about 15 minutes but it was worth our time. Service is exceptional here - both friendly and attentive. The various blends of coffee on offer (of which I tried all) were all fantastic. Food, as expected, was really nice. The Cupping Room is justifiably on a different level to most other establishments in Canberra.

The Cupping Room is a great cafe in the heart of Canberra that we had heard a lot about. We ordered their hotcakes with cream cheese, roasted peach, muesli and granola and maple syrup, the cakes were nice and fluffy though the syrup was overly sweet as well as their chicken burger that came with slaw and a side of chips and aioli. Overall, a great cafe near ANU in Canberra and worth a try!
Went here this morning for a super later breakfast after checking out of our hotel. We did some research into breakfast in Canberra and this one kept standing out. For good reason. Good service, everyone was busy but calm, coffee was good. I had the bacon & egg roll, my partner had the smashed avo with added sausage and we shared the haloumi fingers. The haloumi is aaaamazing and both of our dishes hit the spot.
This place is consistently pretty good. Not a huge menu, but they deliver well on everything they offer. Service can be a bit slow during peak times, and very little "walk-throughs" occur (to order more coffee, request the bill, etc.). Overall, a decent spot to eat in the Civic area.
The Cupping Room is seriously one of the best things about Canberra. Don't even ask why, just give it a try! They really deserve the fame, hype and all things nice.
The service is super quick. Ambience and the staff are welcoming and warm. Food is love-licious. Salted Caramel Popcorn Shake, recommended. Loved it :)
This place was a "must try" recommendation by word of mouth. So I just had to see what the hype was about. Their coffee, I must say was excellent. The food is above average and definitely worth the wait in line.
After waiting 25 minutes, we were starving when we sat down. They make their own brew so ofc we ordered coffee. The coffee art was on point. The taste was full of flavour. The orange juice however, tasted very sweet, like there was added sugar, or they diluted it with water. We also tried a salted caramel milkshake, which was overly sweet.
The menu is constantly changing and I've been told they never cook anything twice (I'm not sure about that, will have to see when we revisit).
We ordered:
Cured Salmon - This beetroot cured salmon melted in your mouth. With a kataifi egg ontop, greens, alfalfa, wasabi Mayo and ponzu. That ponzu was top notch, tied everything together.
Market Fish - barramundi, cooked perfectly, flesh was so juicy and tender and skin was crispy! On a bed of ratatouille, black olive puree, crouts and caper berries.
Haloumi Burger - the salty haloumi was very well balanced with the fennel slaw. And the chips were crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the inside, they were perfect.
Super Salad - poached chicken, so juicy and tender, with soba noodles, wakame, greens, red cabbage, mushrooms and boiled egg.
Haloumi Fingers - this was extremely salty, missing something to cut through the saltiness. Unlike the burger where it had the slaw. I would not order this again.
We will be back when we see Canberra again!
With a rating of 4.9 I was expecting great things and I guess everyone else who turned up for breakfast on a weekday was too (so busy!). Unfortunately that meant customer service was not at its peak as staff were flat out. There was a choice of coffee beans which was exciting however when my friend asked about the honey filtration (I think that's what it was) the waitress could not tell us anything except it doesn't actually have honey in it. On a positive note my French toast was AMAZING! Cannot stress how good it was. My friends mothers french toast with nectarines was also enjoyable but my friends salmon tartar lacked something. Maybe it wasn't enough food on the plate but she just wasn't that wowed by her meal. Judging on my meal, coffee and service has to be up there as a 4.
I absolutely love this place! It delivers every time. Great set-up, service and food. A few yummy options on their menu. Most recently I had their fruit bread - just out of this word. Loaded with fruity and nutty goodness, I was buzzing. Delicious coffee as well. Highly recommended!
Good thing we came here just after it opened on Sunday morning as by 8.30 the queue was long. Staff are friendly and the food was great!
The only negative was my sons scrambled eggs and toast has a weird after taste. We couldn't work out what was wrong, but he is fussy and so he wouldn't eat it and he loves eggs! So we ordered toast with peanut butter and jam.
My husband ordered a medium body coffee on their menu and I tried their hot chocolate and it was average. Coffee was definitely good.
For food my husband and I loved their salmon tartare, different and so yum! We also ordered their egg and bacon roll as well as a side of haloumi fingers (crumbed with wasabi kewpie).
We were very happy with our breakfast.
I will recommend the chocolate shake, orange juice, egg and bacon roll and the mushroom hamburger. We two girls felt so full when we finished.Crowded with locals as it is really popular.$25 PP.
Was saddened to see that the breakfast menu has been reduced to only a couple of items (maybe due to season). In any case, had the coconut chia pudding for breakfast, amazing flavour. Nice little shop, no issues with the service.
Big queue for Sunday brunch, was sceptical when told the wait is 25 mins, but turned out it was exactly 25 mins. We got seated around the communal bar, the place was busy, people running around, noisy with people talking, but somehow none of this bothered me, just seem to add to the vibrancy of the place. The decor is fresh with energy. The service was super efficient, water delivered & poured when we sat down, order taken & food served without a long wait. The food were nice, I had a juice and the French Toast with stone fruit and my friend had a coffee and toast with honey. The French was good, but needed stronger creamy/sauce components. Overall, a great place for brunch and worth the 25mins wait.
Amazing food is served at this cafe. Definitely at another level and would give Sydney cafes a run for their money. I tried the super salad and although some may say it's a fancified version of a Korean bibimbap, it was very refreshing for such a hot day.
Nice decor, friendly service and the most important - food was not bad on the day we made a trip down to Canberra. My halloumi cheese burger was quite a bit chewy though, but my chai latte was pretty good.
Very friendly service. Nice decor- open and vibrant. All the dishes we saw come out looked amazing. We chose the market fish ($25) brocolini and beetroot ($17) and side of chips ($3). Loved the chips. Crunchy outside, soft inside, well seasoned. Brocolini dish also included pesto and goats cheese on toast. So fresh and full of flavour. The fish was the only disappointment. Salad and sauce was nice but fish was a little overcooked.
The cupping room is one of my fave places for breakfast and if they had more seating it would be perfect. Any day of the week, it seems to be at capacity but a table of one or two is relatively easy to seat particularly if you don't mind sitting at bar style share tables.
They make my favourite mocha. The kind for dark chocolate lovers; rich, warm and slightly bitter.
The menu changes seasonally and there's only ever been one thing I didn't like: the very dry fruit bread that even brei & figs couldn't remedy. Everything else was spot in.
There's a to go counter around the side if you can't get a table but need your coffee and if you'll lucky, you can pick up one of their triangular cronuts. The salted caramel one I had was butter, crisp and the best I've had. Their milkshakes are indulgent and a meal unto themselves
There's no room for prams inside without a struggle and seating outside is at bar level. There is near by metered parking available most of the time. Weekends might be a bit tougher.
This place was great. Fantastic food. Great coffee. The service was exceptional. The staff went above and beyond to ensure that I had a great breakfast- providing advice on coffee, continually filling up my water glass etc.
Soul shake is unreal!!
The light pink colour with some flowers on the top, looks romantic. And the flower add flavours to the shake as well.
Taste moderately sweet, lightly creamy.
Really recommended.
Good cafe vibe, service was great attentive wait staff, coffee was alright... but the Best Bacon and Egg roll!!!!! Yum!!!!! Make sure to have it!!!
Headed to the Cupping Room for breakfast on the weekend. The place was quite busy at 7 on a Saturday morning. The wait staff were great and seemed to enjoy working there, which is always a good sign.
They use ONA coffee and I ordered the house espresso. It was the perfect start to the breakfast. I also had the poached eggs with sourdough which was nice. I will be trying out other dishes on the menu.
The food is really really good. Fabulous presentation. The cafe itself is comfortable and the music fits in well.
The staff are really friendly and the customer service is really cool.
Their coffee making style are different to the others as they don't have latte/mocha/cappuccino, but the taste is still fantastic. The coffee art is really good too.
If I am back in Canberra, I am coming back for sure.
This is a wonderful cafe in Canberra. We dashed in for a quick breakie and went back for an afternoon snack. Very serious coffee with attention to the beans, the milk and the making. Pays off - is very very good coffee. All we ate here was delicious - especially the smoked goats curd. This place is on my list every time I'm in Canberra ... great service - fastest coffee ever - maybe I was looking bleary eyed!
One of the most delicious brunch dishes I've had. The 'beetroot and cauliflower' was amazing - sourdough toast with cauliflower, asparagus, a few different kinds of beetroot, a beautiful salsa verde, goats cheese. Perfectly put together and seasoned. Can't fault it. Looks gorgeous and colourful as well. Very clever dish. I added a side of avocado, which was also really tasty. Menu is clever - all the dishes are interesting and colourful. Pricy place - all the dishes are already expensive and the sides are really expensive too (bacon $6, avocado $5). Coffee was fine, but not great. They have an $11 coffee (!), which my partner tried - it wasn't better than their normal coffee. Cafe is very trendy, gorgeous decor and the staff were really friendly. Service was quick. We went on a weekday at 10am and had to wait about 10 minutes for a table - must be absolute chaos getting a table on the weekend! I enjoyed my dish so much that I would definitely return - just downsides for me were price and the coffee could be better.
Visited here for brunch, the food was delicious and we were provided phenomenal service. It was the perfect blend of organic, fresh food with warm and inviting staff. This was my first time eating here, so when I went to order a "cappuccino with soy", the guy waiting the table laughs and asks, "you've never been here before" ... but afterwards, we were taken on a lovely coffee journey and I learnt some awesome things about their coffee, too. Definitely worth the visit, just make sure to beat the 1 O'clock lunch rush.
I have been to thecupping room many times. Definitely, this cafe surprised me every time. I really love it really!! I rank its coffee as 1st! You always need to wait over half a hour on weekends, but it is worth to do that.
So went to this cafe at 9am, it was a bit busy in there, they have different type of coffee bland selection to choose your coffee which was a bit unique. I ordered 2 different coffees, the first one was nice but not really hot/warm, it was room temperature but tasted good though. I ordered a moca in the end which was again not warm at all , like literary one can drink it all in one go and the milk looked very bubbly however breakfast was amazing! I totally loved it! I had placed eggs with avo and goats cheese! It was so fresh! Service is great! I will definitely go back again whenever I visit Canberra. Make sure if you order coffee tell them to make it warm or if u like it hot.
Chia bowl with avocado from the famous Canberra haunt named the Cupping Room. For all the hype I expected just a little bit more. Don't get me wrong, it's still one of the best options for food and drinks in the CBD, however, being content is something the Cupping Room should strive to avoid in the battle for supremacy in the capital.
Been here last weekend! It was such a lovely place for brunching, despite the fact I had to wait about 30-40 mins since it was super busy! However, it's so worth it. The soul shake that I had was the bomb! It was watermelon, coconut, lychee with chia seeds. Not too sweet but the flavour as the colours and the taste were amazing! For mains, I had salmon tartare and bacon steak, they were also really yummy. I got recommended to try the French toasts at this place, however they didn't have the mango one due to the change of seasonal menu, different season with different menu. This French toast was still really good, I recommend to try it still if you come :)
My wife and I are big foodies, we especially love our breakfast and coffee.
We have been to The Cupping Room (TCR) on numerous occasions, the food and coffee are always good and the menu has a degree of separation to other cafes in the same league. You don't require and cannot make a booking at TCR which means you may be waiting out the front for upwards of 20mins if visiting on a weekend. There is a lot of seating inside and minimal seating at the front of the cafe, in winter they have the see-through canopy closed and the heaters pumping. It is full table service, the staff are very attentive. They have their normal menu with a page at the back for specials, the specials are often to good to pass up!
The atmosphere- This cafe has a really good feel inside and out, the music is always cranking and the decor is very welcoming. The cafe and tables are always clean and the staff will always keep you stocked up with water.
Coffee- The coffee beans used are from sister cafe ONA. They have a world champion barista, so that pretty much tells you all you need to know... I've tried the house and seasonal blend milk coffee's and both are a delicious drop and get me going. There is also a a takeaway coffee and pastry window around the side. If you enjoy your brew you'll be pleased to know you can buy the ONA beans.
Brekkie 1- Pialligo bacon steak, anything to do with bacon gets me excited! Anybody who is a foodie in the bra will know of Pialligo estate smokehouse, their bacon in particular is worth it's weight in gold. This dish is a relatively new option on the menu and I hope it will be sticking around! The different elements are always cooked to perfection and they just work together so well. This is a really nice breakfast, there isn't anything to fault.
Brekkie 2- Huevos Bollo (hwey-vos boy-oh), translated- Hangover cure. Or egg bun which ever you'd prefer. This comes with double Pialligo bacon, excuse me for a sec... okay we good, double egg, cheese, avo and a delicious relish. You can also add a side of fries if your heart desires. This is one of my favourite breakfast options, especially after a few too many the night before. The burger is big and messy and delicious, this is a must try if you're visiting.
Overall the food is always delicious, the meals come out quickly. The coffee was great. The atmosphere was Booming. Just be sure to get there early on a weekend or you could be waiting some time. Very satisfied and would return.
The Cupping Room has def the best milkshake in Australia! Miss it so much! Usually I would have the honeycomb one but the other milkshake are amazing as well! Brekkie was also good tho normally you will have to wait for 30 minutes. But it's 100% worthy!!! Will def visit there whenever i go back to Canberra! xx
Good food and great service. The weekend atmosphere uplift your mood in the morning as so many people around. You should make a booking in advance if don't want to be part of the queue before breakfast.
They made some introductions about their way of serving coffee. It's an experience to try if you are into coffee.
The menu offers a wide range of food from burger to salmon to non-traditional way to represent your wake-up eggs. And they are presented beautifully on the plates too.
Was surprised to find Canberra actually had a few trendy cafes. The cupping room had great reviews and it did not disappoint. Great varied menu with lots of healthy options. Wanted to get the special which was a mushroom and barley thing with eggs but they ran out after I ordered so went with the baked eggs instead, with mushrooms, silverbeet and Brie. So yum. Really cool vibe and friendly staff. Coffee is a little different as you don't actually choose the style of coffee, just the blend. Was nice anyway. Would definitely return to this surprising gem of I'm ever in Canberra again.
I think I just had the best long black I've ever had at the Cupping Room.. it certainly lived up to all the hype! I ate the pumpkin dish for lunch, which was beautifully presented and tasted fresh and delicious. The staff were very friendly. The only fallback was the noisiness.. it is a big space with pretty loud music and lots of people trying to talk over it. A great vibe though!
Love love love the Cupping Room. A great place to stop for brunch, but also great to get your morning coffee or one of their fantastic milkshakes. We personally love the chocolate peanut butter and popcorn milkshakes - they're to die for!
I very much enjoyed breakfast here with the friendly service and beautiful inventive food to start off the day. The pancakes are great for a frosty Canberra morning being thick and cake like and deliciously decorated with granola. The authentic chai was also appreciated! A minor issue was that it's a little on the pricey side.
You'll find all kinds of bad but crazy good at this contemporary, upbeat cafe in Canberra. I was recommended this place for its coffee by a foodie friend. She said to try their fine brew.
Sorry. I couldn't get past their king shakes. These completely over the top creations like Red Velvet and Apple Crumble . I had the salted caramel and popcorn and practically inhaled it. Followed by a bowl of the most perfect shoestring fries. Well that's a well rounded meal, isn't it?
And the staff are charming. Definitely worth a visit.
HIGH COURT OF CONSUMPTION
BETTY COCKER CJ
1. The JUDGE loves herself a HOT STRONG coffee and The Cupping Room (the 'highly overrated Melbourne wannabe brunch specialists') tries hard but doesn't quite hit the mark.
2. COCKER LOVES COFFEE. But she couldn't manage to get her fix here. They TRIED. They really did. But actually, at the end of the day, it was flat, weak, and SOFT.
3. Look, to be honest, BETTY admits that the food was pretty good. Quite delicious. HALOUMI is on POINT.
4. Should you wait an hour to get in? Go dismiss yourself.
ORDERS
5. The Cupping Room is alright if you like a good cupping of the balls, but it's probably best to cup yourself if you need something that hits the G-SPOT.
What a great place!!! The food was yummy and the service was incredible. They really take care of their customers. We had the smashed avo and poached eggs on toast. For coffee the seasonal blend really hit the spot!!!
Guest Blend Coffee: Smooth with dark chocolate notes
Grilled Halloumi: Fantastic cheese, good balance of flavours
Cheese Burger: Juicy patty with great sauce and heaps of pickles
Good decor! And friendly service! House blend Coffee very nice! Chai latte bit sweet for me! Food good, but the taste and presentation cannot compete with Melbourne's cafes! But still very good experiences in ACT!
Staff were brilliant and they really do have great coffee. We went for brunch at 1:30pm and there was still a wait. These guys know what they're doing. We had the halloumi and the lamb rillettes. The lamb was hands down delicious. The halloumi was good, but all the flavours went together too well and the apple coleslaw didn't have enough zest or bite to cut through the halloumi or eggs. But it was still really delicious.
My friend had the vegan milkshake was which good but so creamy because of the coconut. It was pretty much a meal in itself.
Fantastic. Lovely cafe in Canberra. Everything is very good, the food - interesting menu choices but not too many to be overwhelming. The service is exceptional - friendly informative and efficient. We have been here for breakfast and coffee twice in two days and will be back again before we leave.
Really beautifully presented food and they were able to cater to my dietary requirements. Staff were helpful and the food was delicious. The coffee was well made and they had decaf option but no almond milk. We had the French toast and avo smash and they both arrived at the table and immediately made our mouths water. The taste definitely lived up to the visual expectation. If I'm ever back in Canberra again, would definitely come back here.
Come back again to try. Same problem as last. Hot coffee in a cold cup = warm coffee
Sad! Can't rate the coffee very highly cuz of this.
Coffee
Shot was excellent in itself. Cup was not preheated so shot was delivered warm. If the cup was hotter the shot would be a 10/10.
Service
Attentive, friendly, and efficient.
Food
Generous servings good tasting.
Decor
Very nice.
The best cafe for brunch I think it using Canberra! It's popular and there is always queue along the coffee window. I especially like the French toast and porridge here. They make you feel refreshed and full of energy for the all day! Try the weekly special and let them surprise you!
I finally made it to The Cupping Room and it lived up to the hype. The chicken burger was fantastic - the best I have had in Canberra. Be prepared to wait for a table around busy times, but it's well certainly worth it. My only gripes would be that the service is a bit slow, and we were put on a 'half' table against the wall that should be barely space enough for one person.
Absolutely beautiful.
We were driving from Melbourne to sydney and decided to stay in Canberra for 1 night.
And thank god we did, the food at this place is just heavenly. They put just the right amount of each ingredient in the chicken burger, the taste is so well balanced. And that apple juice is surprisingly fresh. Best brunch I have ever had.
I love the food and coffee. The service is good. And I always go there to but coffee. I have tried many of there burgers and they taste awesome
The best place to grab a soy chai in Canberra. It can be inconsistent from day and day from amazing today and tomorrow a drink that taste like warm milk. Waiting times are pretty long so if you're impatient just be prepared. Overall the dishes are amazing. Occassiaonly you'll get a dish that's overly charred or undercooked but on average they deliver.
Whenever I return to Canberra, I always try to make a trip to The Cupping Room, one of my home town’s most popular cafés. Located right in the city centre, it’s always bustling with university students, families and businessmen alike, all looking for a cup of their amazing Ona coffee. I caught up with a high school friend at The Cupping Room during my annual leave, and even though it was almost three months ago, I was so impressed with their food I knew I had to review it
Every time time I come here it is busy but it is worth the wait. The Cupping Rooms serves some of the best cup of coffee in Canberra with its houseblend. For those who haven't tried, the houseblend is like a flat white with a hint of chocolate.
The Huevos Bollo breakfast burger is a must try. Fantastic flavours with the wood smoked bacon and the runny egg yolk. Perfect for the cold mornings

Canberra surpassed all my expectations & was not like the arduous, long day of school excursion I had endured previously. Not only is the town beautiful, interesting & significant in our culture but it has cafes like this. It is absolutely buzzing like mad on Sunday & getting a table here is like trying to get into the latest trendiest place in Sydney despite significantly less population. At this kind of busy times, waiting time is about 15 minutes but its worth it. Food is creative, fresh, fun with flair & so damn tasty. You feel good eating it too. The place is abuzz to be in & makes you energised. Coffee is great. Service is good. It is cool, hip & trendy. So dont underestimate Canberra & what it has to offer.
when it's 7.45 am and there's already a crowd waiting outside a place to get breakfast, you know you're in for something good. and what we got was fantastic. the cupping room booms with energy from the minute it opens, lifting your spirits up for the day! we got the two kinds of coffee that are prepared here: the chocolatey one, and the vanilla one. both were delicious. i was craving sonethinng frothy and what i got was heaven. as for the food, nothing better than each person on the table getting something different and sharing all of it. the smashed avo was so tasty, and felt so healthy. a great way to begin your morning no doubt. also they didnt go stingy with the avo, which is great for us avocado lovers. the french toast was also glorious, and should be the pick of anyone with a sweeeeet tooth. i couldnt get enough of the chocolate sauce that came with it. last, the blueberry hot cakes exceeded every expectation. in my opinion, the most complex flavours on the table belonged to this plate, which also looks beautiful (watch out food porn instagrammers) with the green pistachio ice cream (i had never thought of having that in my breakfast, and i would do it again) and the red pomegranate all (oh the tanginess) around. what a delightful way to begin the day. also i must say, the staff is charming. now i understand the crowd and would happily join them!
Very good - lives up to the hype and if you're a young thirty something in body or mind this is the place to come for deliciousness and a dose of cool. Especially good coffee - the pour overs are really good, but the macadamia crusted haloumi (even as a side dish) is worth opening your eyes early for. Because the downside is...there are looong queues to get in. Get there early, and wear your best casual attire.
I love the cupping room, in here, I felt in love my confit salmon!!!! We had one salmon dish and one lamb dish. Both are very nice and full of flavour!!! After 3 hours drive from Sydney in early morning, I feel refresh after brunch in the cupping room, will visit again next time when I come to Canberra!!!
Great coffee, food is good. Always a long line up and wait but I never mind. Always great to sit out in the sun, recommend the salmon dish. Service is ok
Established by Sasa Sestic as part of the Ona Empire, The Cupping Room is the shiny city flagship.
What are big black espresso machines you may ask. They are the Opera machines, designed by Sasa and Synesso (yes, you can do that when you win the World Barrista championships in 2015).
We started with the milk on the guest blend which we found to be a really light roast and a bit lacking for us. Next we tried the house roast which was right on point.
For brunch, in our party of 4, we had the Crumbled Haloumi with capsicum dip, poached eggs and asparagus (fine dining quality), the smashed avo and the Jamon (both devine).
Not only were they on-point but we come on Easter and the place was buzzing and still they managed to take care of our table super well.
Great coffee - always want more than one cup! Food is yummy and presented beautifully. Friendly service. Definitely worth a visit! Better than their other ONA cafe in Fyshwick.
Living down the road, I always notice a large crowd outside on the weekends whilst walking past on my way to town. Such regular crowds suggests this place is popular for more than just a passing fad??? Smashed avo was great.
Went here for brunch on the weekend with some friends, really enjoyed the place
Staff were friendly, table service was fast
Managed to get a table for 5 even though the place was packed full of people.
Dishes served:
The salmon
Chicken burger
Drinks:
fresh juice (orange, watermelon and lychee)
The salmon was a delight, the dish was interesting and perfect if you want something light for lunch.
The chicken burger was really good, i don't usually order burgers but when walking into the place and seeing burgers being bought out, i definitely knew i wanted one, overall the burger did not disappoint!
Their watermelon, orange and lychee juice was amazing, fresh and refreshing!
Would recommend everyone to try their juices
Dis place calls for a muzz!
Amazing coffee and great food! Bacon and egg roll and chia and sago bowl was fantastic. Decor and atmosphere was clean and trendy. Gets busy so get there early
Bit torn on this one. The food was really good - I had the smashed avo and it was super fresh and tasty (could have used a little bit of lemon but the ingredients were good quality). Oj was disappointing though - icy and bland. Service was reasonable but not exactly attentive. Decor has tipped over from trendy chic to cheap-looking. You'll wait for around 30 mins for a table but you'll like the food. The menu is also pretty pricey and there is a Sunday surcharge plus I was overcharged a few extra dollars to boot. I'll come back but not on the regular.
This place was amazing! We put our names down and the wait was said to be 30min, however it was much shorter. We could order coffee while waiting.
Food was great! Smashed avo is highly recommended 😍
I thought that I’d have to head down to Melbourne to find more innovative cafes outside of Sydney, but surprisingly, I found a cafe in Canberra which would give any Melbournian cafe a run for its money thanks to a recommendation from a friend. It’s called The Cupping Room and at 8.30am on a Sunday morning, the place is pumping – we even have to wait for a table because the place is packed to the rafters.
Nice food. I had smashed avocado - gluten free option. I tried the gluten free one because I am interested in the quinoa bread (by deeks) and it is a wise choice. The bread is toasted nicely and it is fluffy and soft in the inside. With the nutrition in quinoa, I would highly recommended to switch to gluten free bread if it is an option for your dish.
Smashed avocado normally going be boring as many cafe serves it and it generally going to be - you know - bread with avocado on top. A fancier version will be accomplished with an egg, which this one does, with TWO EGGS. Both cooked perfectly! best poached egg I have had. And it topped with whipped goat cheese, I am not a fan of goat dairy, but if you just pick a little bit of that with your avo and egg, trust me, the flavour become very complex and the little salty-ness of the goat cheese really accelerate the dish flavor. The tomato is also beautiful, it is sauted with garlic, and maybe a little bit of vinaigrette, very special, in a very good way.
Staff are nice and kind, the waiting line is absurdly long!!!!! I was dining alone so I could just get in and sit by the bar, but I tell ya, it is really worth the waiting. the dish come up very fast. The only thing I found not too much of a surprise is the coffee, maybe I have too much expectation when I come to the cupping room, heard they have really amazing coffee. It is good, but to me, canberra always delivers good coffee, and I just personally prefered other cafe's one over this one.
After living in Canberra for 2 years I could finally realise the quality of some of the local products. There are the truffles, the wine, the bacon and (even though I don't think it) the coffee. The owner of ONA (and thus Cupping Room) was awarded the best barista in the world. Quite an accolade especially when you think about all the coffee wank in Melbourne. Not only this, I had heard the same guy submitted his coffee bean to some kind of international judging panel and won that too. The world's best barista using the world's best beans? That's going to be pretty hard to beat.
I never do reviews but these guys deserve it! Amazing place! Great coffee, excellent service and good food! No complaints I highly recommend!
Great food and ambience. I ordered the watermelon, lychee and grapefruit juice which was a refreshing summer beverage. The fried chicken burger with avocado, lime, cheese and thyme was top level. For dessert I ordered the red hot cakes with mascarpone cream and berries. I expected the hot cakes to be a tad moist and dense. However, the were dry and flaky and tasted like coloured plain cake. The presentation of the hot cakes itself was fantastic but I wish it tasted as good as it looked! Service was fantastic.
I frequently visit this cafe because of its great atmosphere, service and seasonal menus that never fail to impress. I went with the french toast ($18) which not only looks great, but tastes even better. The dish isn't overly sweet since there are berries and a great coulee like sauce that cut the sweetness. Scatterings of honeycomb add great texture and dark chocolate shards with almonds add a wonderful depth to the dish. Their chicken burger is well worth its value ($20 I think) and comes with a side of chips. Extremely tasty and doesn't make you feel sick after eating it. The pork belly options had a good portion of meat, and the garnishes all added to the dish, some pickled to cut through the fat of the pork. Of course there were bit of crispy pork crackling - essential with any pork belly :P Our latest visit did not fall short and with such great value and service, we'll definitely be back.
If you're in Canberra, this cafe is a must! Awesome service, great music and amazing food. These guys are serious about their Chai. We were very impressed with how it was served. The menu had a good selection with lots of vegetarian options. Will definitely be visiting this cafe again!
I love The Cupping Room! It's great for lunch or breakfast for a couple or a group of six. You can't make a booking so just be mindful of this and show up a little earlier if you want to get a table for a bigger group. The menu changes with the seasons and they do great burgers including the bacon and egg burger! They also have some yummy salads and fresh juices. Their coffee is spot on too. Good location, good vibe, good service and good food. It ticks all the boxes, you can't go wrong with The Cupping Room!
This place really knows coffee, and has different brews on offer. Staff seem very knowledgeable about the offerings! Breakfast is an unusual offering that has south american origins. If you're a visitor staying in the Canberra CBD, the coffee alone makes it well worth finding. It's very busy on a Sunday morning.
The Cupping Room definitely delivered in service and quality of food. Seated immediately in the middle of brunch peakhour with friendly and efficient service. The guy who served us knew about (and loved) coffee and was happy to talk us through the blends. Pour over was exceptional as was the standard macchiato. Our breakfast exceeded expectations, the jamon and salmon dishes were spot on.

This was my first visit to The Cupping Room for lunch – finally, I could try their famous burgers! The spring menu is full of delights, and I couldn’t go past the lure of a Korean fried chicken burger with kimchi ($20) – swoon. I started with the strawberry, apple and mint juice, which was beautifully presented in a large glass and was really refreshing – strawberry and mint belong together! The burger arrived shortly afterwards and was piled nice and high with white kimchi and the fried chicken. I was expecting the chicken skin to
While in Canberra for Eat Drink Blog, The Australian Food + Drink Bloggers Conference, I had some time for sight-seeing – food sight-seeing!. Staying with friends, I was told we must have breakfast at The Cupping Room. Who was I to say no?!. The Cupping Room is a very busy place and luckily we managed to grab a table. There’s seating inside and out, and unfortunately they don’t take bookings, but there’s plenty of room to wait for a table.
Internationally renowned baristas hosted us for a coffee-and-food matched lunch on a warm Sunday afternoon. Every coffee had a story, and every course was paired with it to bring out the hints and hues in each. Definitely somewhere I'd love to come back to; I hear their breakfasts are amazing!
Being in Canberra for only a weekend in September I was challenged with the daunting task of narrowing down the long list of eateries that populated the nation's capital city. After much mulling over Zomato, The Cupping Room was one that made the the cut and I can confidently say I had no regrets.Â
Food is good and special. My friend really like those strawberry in the French toast. But the seasonal coffee is so-so. Well, every thing is nice, except the parking penalty received.
I came for one thing. I came for their milkshake. To be precise I came for their Salted Caramel Popcorn milkshake and it did not disappoint. The flavours were sophisticated simple and just plain beautiful. Great consistency that shows how good it is.. and best f all it was more like a thick shake which ticks every box in the book. I loved the crunchy bits of popcorn that float above... wish I got a spoon with it but you cant have it all. The service was friendly enough and quite efficient. It seems to get many patrons dining there at lunch time. I've yet to try any of their good but based on this experience I'd love to come down and give some of their food a try. So for now.. great location, good service and milkshakes that leave you beckoning for more.
The variety of the menu is the real highlight here. Creative brunch options as well as fresh salads and burgers. It's hip without being too pretentious but still draws big crowds. Staff are generally friendly though you have to be persistent with getting their attention. A real university feel and a lively spot in a dull part of town.
After a long wait but well worth it. Coffee great single origin and nice - could have been a bit hotter. The smashed avo eggs and bacon with whipped goats cheese was great.

This cafe is a Sydney version of trendy bourgeoisie Bondi meets hipster Newtown! It has a hip and cool atmosphere with pumping eclectic music pumping in the background and a cafe packed with hungry diners reallt enjoying their orders!
I can totally see why this place is hip and happening! The food is just divine and the wait staff are attentive. Why I say that? I couldn't decide between the chia and sago bowl or the jamon and anchovies, as for a recommendation and the waitress suggested I tried the chia and sago! Spot on! Soooooooo delicious, fresh and healthy. This place is a must if you are in Canberra and looking for a laid back place to breakfast/brunch, that also serves amazing food!
My brother had heard some good reviews so we decided to go to The Cupping Room for breakfast.
We settled for the Eggs to order with Bacon and the Avacodo Eggs.
This was a really different dish with Avacodo and Feta and Poached eggs. Simply amazing combination.
The place is buzzing with people so you may have to wait to be seated.
Seriously inspired, creative and delicious brunch type fare! Packed to the brim yet comfy environment, responsive warm staff, generous but well portioned plates, just about the yummiest aioli I have ever tasted!!
Spring is here.. Bird is chirping.. Flowers are blooming.. Bla bla bla.. It's a clear sign for a quick weekend GETAWAY for both of us!. Only a short three hour drive from Sydney, Canberra is packed with Australia's history and culture, tasty food, bike riders, roundabouts and all those magic make Canberra attractive on its own way.
I would definately recommend coming to the Cupping Room and have the hotcakes. The hotcakes had a variety of flavours that was totally new to me. The combination of honeycomb, fresh and sweet fruits, the ricotta hotcakes and panella sugar worked really well with each. The waiter that served us was really nice and knowledgable about the menu especially with the blends of coffee beans that was served whilst making our stay enjoyable. I will be coming back here soon!
I cam at around 12:30pm on Sunday and had to wait for only 20 minutes for a table of 4. Good service. Good food but not a lot of choices. I had the Smashed Avo ($17) with bacon ($5) and portion was generous. Bill was around $120 for 4 people (including 10% Sunday surcharge).

If you feel like a diverse range of obscure options for breakfast lunch or tea this is the place to go in Canberra, it's highly popular and we had to wait 10ish or so minutes to be seated. The food was served quickly considering the venue was bustling with patrons. Was it a bit hurried yes as a couple of small errors have been made getting the orders to us. But never the less it was ok. Service was ok, felt a bit brushed off a couple of times by staff but turn over was clearly more the aim than customer service. The setting however was cute and the concept was cosy.
Lovely cafe .. Good aroma coffee for waking you up in the morning. I had Salmon dish come with soft boiled egg and fresh watercress salad - Perfect cooked and good combined.
Coffee was great! Loved the dark chocolate used in the mocha.
Food had potential. Ordered the Sous vide salmon and the Gnocchi. Had some exciting elements on the plate. The sous vide salmon was undercooked for my liking, more akin to smoked salmon texture. The lemonade foam was an interesting addition. The gnocchi was nicely pan fried but slighty dough-ey.
Overall was impressed with the prompt friendly service given we went during the lunch-time rush - only had to wait 5mins to be seated and 10mins to be served our food.
Great. best bacon eggs perfect great coffee. Av smash was really good and despite being busy they fitted me in. Perfect way to start a dreary cold day in the capital Well done boys and girls

On University Avenue in the heart of Canberra you’ll find the fashionable and busy cafe, the Cupping Room! Cupping is the process of really tasting coffee, the smell, the feel, observing every part of it – the body, flavour and aftertaste. Cupping is for the coffee lovers and master tasters, and if a cafe is going to be called the Cupping Room we’re going to expect them to be passionate about their brew!
10/10 would go visit cupping room again. Though its price is not very amiable yet the food and service would definitely make you spend your lovely sunday morning there anytime. Hands down for its cold brew coffee, its light and delicate texture makes me fall for it. Furthermore the vibe and ambiance of the place is contemporary and cozy which I was infatuated with.
Coffee was pretty good, choice of different blends. Standard Canberra prices though! Food was above average which is a good thing for Canberra cafes!
The Cupping Room is a cafe located on University Avenue in the North of Canberra, just north of Acton and of the many hotels in the area. Like anywhere in the city, it has the challenge of trying to appear old and rustic, while at the same time being on the ground floor of an apartment building. I visited The Cupping Room while attending a conference at one of the hotels down the road and I chose the cafe for three reasons that may be important to you.
Long lines out the front on a Sunday morning, as it's one of very few places that opens at this time in Canberra. Thankfully, they brought small salted caramel milkshakes to the welcome relief of certain parched mouths waiting for a coffee and a feed! Inside, the decor is fun. The service is great: friendly, personal and quick. It's not the cheapest cafe going around, but the food was excellent and portions huge. The coffee was also nice. Couldn't put a foot wrong, really.
It seems like an easy way to make your first million would be to open a cafe on a Sunday in Canberra, but it had better be good, as The Cupping Room is one of the best I've been to!
One of my favourite places though I don't go as often as I would like to. Great coffee and food that is sophisticated yet unpretentious. Can't wait to try the new Winter menu!
So delicious yet so far away! This would have to be…hands down, my favourite cafe experience to date. The Cupping Room challenges Sydney’s best. Last weekend I was down in Canberra to attend a music festival and my best friend stumbled across The Cupping Room. As we walked through the oddly quiet streets of Canberra it seemed that everyone else had the same idea. On a corner block, with tens of people lined up and waiting for a table, there stood the perfect Cupping Room. We were told by their very friendly staff that the wait was about 20 minutes, but we were given the option to head around the side, grab a take away coffee and sit on the cushions placed along a bench. There were two coffee options; the house which is your standard latte coffee blend and the seasonal was a fruitier blend. Both met my standards and were delicious.
Everything that was ordered over the two days was amazing: the coffees better than average and the meals were contemporary, innovative, worldly, fresh and oh so trendy (so good that we went for breakfast on two consecutive days). One thing that out-stood the rest was the salted caramel popcorn milkshake, to die for (we purposely went back the second day for this and were amazed with the meals all over again). We all tried something new so we had the chance to suss out most of the menu.
This cafe oozes passion. From its amazing and out of the ordinary menu, its presentation and plating and impeccably informed wait staff, it’s one of the few things that we make me want to head down to Canberra over and over again.
Give me a room of cups any day of the week!
Great food. Good service. A bit dirty place but food is really exquisite. A tad more attention on keeping the place clean will go a long way.
During our cupping session, we are encouraged to literally slurp the coffee and move it around our mouth. This ensures the coffee covers the entire palate evenly resulting in a better taste of the coffee. Sipping the coffee produces a different more subdued taste. Did you know that there are differences to the flavour profiles of coffee as it cools down in temperature?
Love the breakfast!. As mentioned by other reviewers: the current photo of a slice doesn't do justice to the actual gorgeously looking and tasting food that comes out of the kitchen. Coming from Melbourne this breakfast was one of the highlights of our Canberra weekend getaway. Yam!
Was in town for the marathon and was recommended this place.. was impressive, great coffee and service brilliant
Amazing breakfasts!. The Cupping Room is one of my favourite breakfast places in Canberra. I've never ordered the same thing twice, and have never been disappointed with the food. Special mention goes to the smashed avo on toast with bacon - oh my god! SO tasty, great serving sizes and the service has been perfect every time - casual but friendly and staff are happy to give informed suggestions when I can't make up my mind about what to order. The coffee is great too - one of the few places around offering filter coffee. You may need to wait awhile for a table or your meal when it's busy, but it's well worth the wait.
My absolute favourite place to get dine in Canberra. The coffee is amazing too!
Beautiful food. Really nice food. Had the Spanish mess and the hotcakes. Nailed the taste and presentation of food. Really nice vibe too.
Coffee was good. Had milkshakes/coffee/iced drinks - loved the milkshakes.
Loved the ambience/interior/clean look, i think they can up the service a little more though
Awesome food, nice wait staff, positive vibes, menu that makes the tastebuds tingle and coffee for days. 9.15/10
Great food great service. Really busy on a Sunday morning but you can get it takeaway and go to the park.
10/10 | Perfect coffee, outstanding food. These guys have built a perfect cafe. This could sit someone amongst the many many strong offerings of Melbourne, easily. I can't fault this place, great service, fantastic strong coffee at a perfect temperature consistently. Menu is imaginative and the quality of the food is outstanding. Specials looked awesome. My new Canberra number one. Well done Cupping Room, I will definitely be back.
Great breakfast!. Although it s pretty busy and had to wait for a table it was well worth the 10 mins standing in the sun. Great service and the food was prompt it lives up to the way it reads from the menu. We'll be back on another trip to Canberra
Delicious!!. I ordered the burger with the guacamole and bbq sauce. I wasn't disappointed. I think the waiter forgot about my cappuccino order but otherwise the food, service and atmosphere was great.
The cupping room is my new favourite coffee shop and brunch place, we where welcomed by the warm staff who told us all about the type of coffee they serve and told us about some of their favourite dishes, we got ice coffee, avo and his mates, and the amazing pork belly burger, 10/10!
The coffee and the pork belly burger were amazing! I will be back!
Food is great but coffee is wanky. Food is consistently delicious in this canberra cafe. However, when I was told that I could not order a cappuccino and only a white coffee I nearly laughed in the waiters face. I enjoy a good cup of coffee and do not need to be told how to enjoy it, BRING BACK THE CHOCOLATE POWDER!
Great food, a little expensive but worth it.. Pricey, but very worth it. Service is pretty good, so is the coffee, and the food is great. Offers good vegetarian options and reasonably generous serving sizes. I think it's a bit too noisy inside, but other than that, it's never let us down.
Cozy and vibrant. Husband and I came in from a cold rainy day and immediately felt welcome! Warm, inviting space with well thought out decor and a great atmosphere. My husband liked the coffee - although those who just like their coffee simple might want to prepare themselves for a lot of options and a 'philosophy'. I had the Bircher Muesli. It was nice and certainly had a vibrant mix of modern ingredients - chia and goji berries of course. I immediately had menu envy for the salmon got cakes but all the food looked good and was well presented.
Yes for brekky. Have only been at breakfast time but it's great. Coffee is of course fantastic (it is ONA coffee!) and so is the Huevos Bollo. Delish.
Only thing is the service can be a bit inattentive.
The house blend was delicious and the breakfast was very tasty. A very busy place but the staff were friendly and attentive and the service was really quick!
My local. The staff here are wonderful and the menu is always changing based on customer reviews. I absolutely love it here and I'll come for breakfast most mornings I have off :) keep up the amazing work!!
Great place for breakfast. Friendly staff, buzzing atmosphere, good coffee.
Top Service Excellent coffe.... Top Service
Excellent coffee
Sensational Food
Staff Incredible
We arrived mid morning for their first Sunday trade - pretty obvious that something Canberra has been begging for, it was absolutely packed.
I ordered the jamon & pea purée with eggs with gf bread. Explaining how delicious it was would be impossible - absolutely incredible. Safely the best breakfast I have had out.. and I have had a lot! Coffee was flawless, which was unsurprising. Service was excellent and super quick despite it being mega busy, atmosphere was wonderful. Cannot wait to keep coming back, to try the rest of the menu. So many unusual and delicious sounding things :)
P.S For those other glutards out there, I urge you to get here for the gf bread if nothing else. Ridiculously good. I even ordered more. I can't stop thinking about it.
Visited with a group of 5 on a very busy Saturday morning. The staff were brilliant - calm, polite and professional. Fitted us in after only 15min wait - and the wait was worth it. Great coffee and exceptional food.
Always a good option. Breakfast, lunch or just for a Coffee The Cupping room is my pick
great menu and awesome coffee love the friendly staff that can always find you a seat.
favorite dish would be the Forbidden rice if you haven't had it yet please do.
Field mushroom burger was so good. Meatballs really great. Shakes (we had the Nutella) we're pretty full on. Would definitely return. Prob soon.
Amazing! Went there for breakfast. We waited about 10 mins for a table because it was so busy but the staff were super nice and friendly. As soon as a table became free they cleaned it for us in record time. The food was incredible - very creative but not in a weird way. All the good flavours were there and the presentation was fantastic. The only complaint I have is that these guys aren't open on a Sunday which means less delicious food for me :( Will definitely be returning very soon!
Interesting breakfast options. I like a breakfast menu that's different and innovative and The Cupping Room fits that bill well. service is responsive and the coffee is a 7 or 8 out of 10. great they use Ona coffee - the beyond fair-trade local direct importer and roaster. This place filled to capacity on a week day morning with students and young professionals.
Great value, great food. Coffee is very good. Layout is very nice and hip but vibe feels more natural than some other spots that have opened around town in the last couple of years. Food is good - the rhubarb crumpets were great, good texture and flavour and excellent price! ($9 I think?) Overall, good venue that feels like it's a lot more creative than a lot of seemingly similar venues
Coffee Ecstasy. I dropped in for solo breakfast after a brutally early morning meeting. I'm not a big coffee drinker, but the flat white blew me away. Was that magical stuff even coffee?! The barbudos string bean fritter with egg and bacon was a good breakfast choice, even if the black turtle beans in the salsa were a little undercooked. I lingered, decided to go for the (maple & blueberry notes, apparently) cappuccino, left wired and in love.
Excellent place. I have been several times now for lunch. I have found the service to be extraordinarily efficient and friendly- especially for a cafe in Canberra. It is such a relief to have table service and non-supercilious staff in Civic! The food is innovative, generous and delicious. The coffee was lovely and the tasting notes rather fun and novel, even if I don't really comprehend them.
Worth a try!. Stopped in for a quick breakfast while in Canberra for work, bacon and egg roll with avocado, and a large flat white all to go... great service, tasty food, and coffee ok (albeit a little weak / milky). In all a good overall experience!
Coffee & food worth the wait. Have been here 3 times. There seems to have been some teething issues with service, though I've never been treated offensively, it's more that we had a bit of a wait when the place was busy or got forgotten because we were out of eyeshot of the waitstaff. Today when we went we didn't have a problem with the service from anyone, so maybe they are starting to get into the swing of things.
All three times we have had delicious, creative food, fantastic milkshakes, and coffee to die for. It's true that you're not going to get a tall caramel half-shot latte here, but frankly I don't care when I can drink the espresso straight up and hardly believe I am drinking black coffee. In any case, for a sweet milk-based hit, the mocha is also divine.
Great Brekky. Only been here once but I think its worth a review! I had mushrooms on toast for breakfast and they tasted delicious! Mushrooms on toast is such a simple thing but god it is good when its done right!! I like the decor inside and was surprised how relaxing it was to sit outside amongst the grey buildings and busy city road :) Very enjoyable brekky!
Thanks Cupping Room :)
Best Breakfast. Outstanding addition to the canberra cafe scene. Stylish twists on the standard breakfasts you'll find around canberra at a great price. Definitely a place for coffee lovers, it was great to see so many different types of coffee, even better to drink them!
The cupping room is relatively new (I think it opened at the beginning of this year) and is part of the ONA family. Arriving at Saturday noon, the cafe was bustling, and for a second, I thought I was back in Melbourne. The cupping room has an amazing menu, comprised of a range of different coffee blends and a selection of drool-worthy meal options. - See more at: http://myfructosefreelife.com/the-cupping-room/#sthash.FR7aQ88u.dpuf
Posted on March 7, 2015 by Feast Wisely Leave a comment Last weekend I enjoyed an overnight stay with the lions and rhinos at Canberra Zoo. During my whirlwind 24 visit from Sydney I was keen to find a café in Canberra that would challenge the best in Sydney. I narrowed my choice to three spots based on recommendations, and decided on The Cupping Room (Local Press Cafe and Penny University are earmarked for my next trip). The Cupping Room dominates an otherwise ordinary corner of Canberra’s CBD – a colourful wall mural, busy outdoor high benches and a striking wooden frontage sit in stark contrast to the surrounding concrete buildings. Inside it’s on par with cafe that you’d find hidden down a Melbourne CBD laneway – the setting is as photogenic as the food and coffee, hence their large Instagram following. The Cupping Room was designed by the team behind Ona Coffee – Canberra’s largest specialty coffee roaster. Since 2008 they’ve been working directly with coffee farmers in countries like Brazil, Costa Rica and Ethiopia, and paying at least 20% more than fair trade prices. As the name suggests The Cupping Room is all about coffee. ‘Cupping’ is the process through which those with a highly refined coffee palate judge brews against each other. The coffee is a little more involved than you may expect – don’t make the mistake of just asking for a latte or flat white. Instead check out the ‘what’s pouring’ menu and ponder over white, black espresso and filter options, and even choose between different blends. The coffee sets a high bar for the rest of Canberra to follow but the food at The Cupping Room is also worth a visit in its own right. An extensive all-day menu is served until 2.30pm, so you can have your Bircher muesli at lunchtime or tuck into honey glazed pork ribs at 10am. The standard menu items are accompanied by a couple of equally tempting specials. It was a relief that the pending zoo tour forced me to choose quickly – I chose the ‘avo & his mates’ but wh
I really enjoyed my breakfast at The Cupping Room, its nice to see places that take the old classics and really jazz them up, next time I come back, I’m going to have to try their breakfast take on the Japanese okonomiyaki. It sounds super creative and I’m getting some good vibes from it! I can’t see my next breakfast trip being too far away, I’m already craving their amazing salted caramel and popcorn milkshake again.
Sunday in Canberra was pretty glorious. The sun was shining and the sky was a beautiful blue. Bron suggested we have breakfast at The Cupping Room . The Cupping Room is open for breakfast and lunch every day. They don’t take reservations; just walk in and ask for a table. I suggest getting there early because it doesn’t take long for a queue to form. We arrived just before 8.30 and there were plenty of tables available. The staff are pretty friendly and helpful. Coffee was the first order of business. The Cupping Room doesn’t do lattes and flat whites as such. They do milk based coffees to create a balance of espresso and textured milk. The milk based coffees are served at 60 °C. We were offered the ‘house’ or the seasonal coffee. The house coffee being more chocolatey while the seasonal is more fruity with cherry overtones. We both asked for the house coffee to begin with knowing that there will be an opportunity for a second coffee at the end of breakfast. For breakfast I asked for the Ham hock fritters (Ham hock, corn and potato fritters with two poached eggs, ‘cuppers hot sauce’ and a cress and alfalfa salad) and Bron asked for Avo and his mates (Half an ‘A grade’ avocado, whipped goats curd, snow pea sprouts, herb infused Maldon salt and sourdough toast) with poached eggs. Ham hock fritters with poached eggs, Cupper’s hot sauce and alfalfa salad. Apple iPhone 6 with iPhone 6 Plus back camera 4.15mm f/2.2 at 4mm and f/2.2, 1/40sec, ISO 32 The fritters were full of lovely ham hock meat and the fritters weren’t too salty. The Cupper’s hot sauce was amazing. It complemented the fritters and the lovely oozy runny egg yolk from the perfectly cooked eggs. The cress and alfalfa salad was lightly dressed and very refreshing. I’d happily recommend eating here. The coffees we had were excellent. Starting with the house coffee was a good move and then finishing with the seasonal coffee was better.
The Cupping Room is refreshingly different. Sure it's another new cafe and there seems to be one of those popping up practically every week around Canberra lately. But this place provides you with a different experience, an interesting menu, lots of opportunities to interact with the passionate baristas and to walk away not just with a happy tummy but also slightly more knowledgeable about coffee than what you might've been when you first came in through the doors. I read somewhere that Canberrans apparently consume the most amount of coffee per capita compared to all Australian capital cities so The Cupping Room is bound to have some serious business based on that fact alone!
Now that I’ve visited Canberra for the sixth time, I can finally say I found good food and coffee. Where? At The Cupping Room , regarded as one of the top cafes in the country by many. Disclaimer upfront: I know the owner. But you know I would say so if I didn’t like it.
Last Sunday, Rachi (blogger of Le-Bon Vivant ) and I caught up for lunch at The Cupping Room. It was my first time trying The Cupping Room and I had heard great things about their coffee. On Twitter, Rachi mentioned that she’d been wanting to try the Mushroom Burger at The Cupping Room as part of the #MushroomMania2014 campaign for this year. I was happy to accompany Rachi to sample this burger which sounded fantastic. The Cupping Room is a concept café designed by the team from Ona Coffee. I was interested to try the coffee as since being in Canberra, I hadn’t yet had a decent coffee made with Ona coffee beans, which was disappointing as I was hoping to fall in love with Ona coffee – Canberra’s largest specialty coffee roaster. Needless to say, I had high hopes for the coffee at The Cupping Room. When I sat down, I was asked if I wanted to order a coffee. I quickly ordered my usual – a cappuccino ($3.50) – but wished I had looked at
