Review Frugii Dessert Laboratory - Canberra

Christine Mendoza
Delicious desserts - particularly liked the coconut cream popsicle which had a really soft, mousse texture. The choux pastry with hazelnut custard had a cute little pipette filled with frangelico too. Tasted like a pastry version of a Ferrero Rocher. The New York cheesecake was dense and creamy, with a nice crust. A great spot for sweets and coffee.

Whilst Frugii might not have as many flavours as some ice creameries, the flavours they do serve are unique and delicious. They have several gluten free and dairy free options, as well as small desserts. They're open quite late (11pm) on Friday nights which is perfect for after dinner desserts. Definitely worth a try. We tried the red peach (super tasty) and mango flavours. The mango was easily the best we've tried.

Frugi is a family owned business in Braddon, Canberra. It was recommended to us by a few people who’d visited. It is a dessert store, which makes all of their ice cream, gelato, cakes and chocolate from scratch. Ice creams can be bought in waffle cones, cups, or in take-away tubs. They also have ice cream sticks other desserts like semifreddo and parfait. Flavours change daily but on our visit there was salted caramel, vanilla bean, dark chocolate, chocolate macaron, rosewater, soursop, raspberry, and the flavour we chose - black truffle in vanilla. We got it in a cup, and it was nice and creamy with a good hint of truffle. Very enjoyable!

We experienced Frugii for the first time last night, and we are already looking forward to going back! There were four of us in our group, and there was a unanimous decision that this is the best ice cream we’d ever had. I had the coconut cream ice cream on a stick and also tried the salted caramel, double chocolate and spearmint flavours which incredible. The spearmint flavour reminded me of toothpaste but it was surprisingly delicious! The staff were engaging and we also had coffees and a hot chocolate which was also very good. Frugii was in a foyer surrounded by other wonderful stores including an artisan chocolate shop with a gorgeous display window, a timber themed homewares store, an anime shop and jewellery store. These were closed because we went on a Sunday night but it’s somewhere I will take interstate visitors from now on.

Cool little dessert bar tucked away in a cluster of hip foodie shops in Braddon. Has a good selection of interesting desserts and ice creams. I had the lemon meringue puff and the custard was very flavoursome. Can’t wait to try all the other desserts.

One of my favourite dessert places in Canberra. The staff are friendly and helpful. I like that they always change up the flavours and aren’t overly sweet like Messina. I had the malt and gingerbread flavours this time and wasn’t disappointed. My favourite is still the truffle flavour!

Delicious dessert bar with a mix of traditional flavours and interesting mashups. The gelato was amazing and full of flavour. Definitely reccomend visiting this place for dessert even on a cold Canberra night!

Truly phenomenal dessert and so many options! Catered to dietary requirements really well, the range even for gluten free and dairy free is brilliant! Staff were friendly, there were plenty of places to sit and the relaxed atmosphere meant time flew by!!!

Visited this place when we were on holidays in Canberra and we loved the ice cream selection. They had a good variety and there desserts were really pretty. Be sure to check out their dessert selections as well

Got their cheesecake take away and honestly one of the best cheesecakes I’ve had! Really creamy and strong cheese flavour while remaining smooth and not stodgy in the mouth. I love their crumb which tasted like it had some type of crushed nuts in it? Would come back again and try their other desserts!

I've visited here a few times and each time there is an amazing new flavour to try. Even there desserts are amazing. For me it's a must visit place whenever I am in Canberra. Read more here: thenailchronicle.com/2019/05/08/three-days-in-canberra-three-days-of-relaxation-part-2/

Got some coffee ice cream and it went in the freezer until later but it was still very soft when we ate it. Decent flavour but the flavour and texture seemed like typical supermarket ice cream (not more delicate and richer like you’d normally get at fancy gelato stores). Also got some cheesecake - very dense which was good in a way.

On a hot 38 degrees day, we really wanted ice cream to cool down, and chose Frugii based on reviews.

A small selection of flavours but they were absolutely beautiful, from the Christmas pudding gelato that really tasted like the real thing, and the freshness of pear gelato.

The cranberry and hibiscus was also well done however a little sweet for my palate.

Unsure of pricing of gelato in Canberra, as we’re visiting from interstate, however we thought $7 for two scoops was priced okay.

Also a great selection of ice creams on a stick, and even a gin & tonic on a stick.

Highly recommend a visit!

Great flavours and the ice-cream and sorbets were really smooth. Good value for money, just be careful with the lemonade and limeade as those are much stronger than you'd think they are.
Ame
They have the most unconventional flavours that makes me want to come back frequently and try a new one every time! However, their cardamom and salter caramel ice cream are still my all time favourites! I always enjoy grabbing a scoop on the go and would love to sit down and study there someday!

The lemon meringue choux is so yummy! The lemon has got the real lemony kick so refreshing. Love the Kaya Tart too, full of coconut flavour! Great lab results!

WOW. I went here because I was curious because they had such high reviews. I NOW UNDERSTAND WHY. Their black truffle ice cream is amazingly good!! I have no words but to encourage you to try it! My friend ordered a hot chocolate and a chocolate cookie and she agrees that she hasnt had anything like it. The staff (or i think i actually spoke to the owner 😍) was really helpful and nice to me too! I love everything about this place.

Frugii is the one-stop place for good quality ice creams. Never had an ice cream that is rich yet has a lingering taste in the mouth.

The Black Truffle ice cream deserves a special mention. Being in the winter season when the truffle hunt is on, having an awesome ice cream that is nothing like what you have ever tasted before is indeed satisfying. Even the Dark Chocolate ice cream was equally great. The bittersweet taste was spot on. I loved the combination.

Thanks to the staff of Frugii for a memorable ice cream-in-extreme-cold experience.

For unique and special desserts and iced treat flavours, you can't go past Frugii. Despite many previous visits to Braddon, the dessert parlour only became known to me by recommendation. It's located off the street within the Hive complex, the building that looks like, you guessed it, a beehive. An Australian outfit, Frugii develops their own ice cream flavours, and apart from the top three, all other flavours change frequently. The day we visited we tried the prickly pear, passionfruit and lemon myrtle. The choux desserts are out-of-this-world good and highly recommended.

***edited 06JUL20***

A re-visit here yielded the same result...it was still amazing! The gelato/ice cream/sorbet menu flavours rotate on a daily basis and I had the good fortune of visiting twice and seeing their winter special of Black Truffle. The first time I paired it with Vanilla Bean. It had a lovely creamy texture and the flavour was intense. The second time I had a double scoop of the Black Truffle as it was so good. I had the Hazelnut + Chocolate Choux as well. It was a crisp exterior with a creamy hazelnut chocolate custardy filling.

Canberra's very own innovative dessert joint with desserts handcrafted in the city itself.
Pleasant, simple and innovative ambience makes it very welcoming for diverse customer base.
The staff is very patient, friendly and has a fair command on their products.
The desserts are quite presentable and they even have tasty eggless ice creams which can be quite tempting for the vegetarian and vegan crowd.
Overall a pleasant experience.
After having dinner nearby, we decided to try this place for dessert. Staff were happy to give us tasting of their gelato and I really enjoyed their dark chocolate gelato.
My son loved their strawberry sorbet and my husband went for two scoops! As their popular flavour was salted caramel, he had to go for that along with dark chocolate.

We might try and squeeze another visit before we head back to Sydney as I want to try their cakes!

Dessert lab. Very apt. The mix of desserts is awesome.

Try the lychee ice cream stick. Absolutely fantastic.

Experiment in the laboratory is a must.

Stopped by Frugii for dessert the other day and you have a selection of gelato, icecream, cakes and choux pastries to choose from. To help with the selection you can taste test the gelato. I sampled the Christmas pudding which had a definite liquer taste coming through. Opted for a lychee and durian flavoured icecream which is similar in shape to magnums albeit smaller. Texture of the outer coating of the icecream was similar to durian skin which was clever. The icecream itself was creamy and tasted just like durian. Could not taste any lychee flavour in the icecream. The dessert was delicious. Service was prompt but could be friendlier.

I'm not always one for desserts, but even I have to admit that frugii is amazing! There's plenty of variety, exciting flavours and lovely desserts outside of ice cream. My favourite place in Canberra hands down!
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
John Marshall lured me to Frugii Dessert Laboratory with cheese ice cream. His store is located in the hip Ori building that is part of the changing face of Braddon. With nods to the suburb's industrial and mechanical history, this futuristic building is so named because it looks liked folded origami.Walking inside, each shop front has a distinctive look, with the beauty of the architectural features, like factory alloy doors, taking prominence over glaring brand names and signage. The lighting is moody, rather than flourescent. Fitting in perfectly, Frugii Dessert Laboratory has all the hallmarks of a science lab. They hide away their ice cream in pozzetti - lidded, temperature-controlled metal cylinders. While it’s certainly more eye-catching to see mounds of brightly coloured gelato, haven’t you noticed at the stores that do this, the ice cream's texture is always terrible? Avoiding the use of gimmicks and colourings, John has stripped ice cream down to...

I tried the Vegan Banana Cheesecake here, as well as a tester of the Apricot sorbet!

The sorbet was actually probably the best I've tasted, thick and not just like sugar!! The vegan cheesecake was great; layers of chocolate mousse, banana cheesecake and caramel and coffee cream! It looks absolutely tiny but the cake was so dense and well worth the price! Please make more vegan options!

Atmosphere was great and the place was clean 😊
Spooning Australia
Frugii is my single favourite ice-cream place in Australia. I cannot get enough of it and think I have visited close on ten times, and I live in Sydney! I have some Canberra friends and if I am in the capital for a night or more we usually have dinner nearby, a lot of the time at Grease Monkey, and then head to Frugii for dessert. Seasons have never mattered and on one of these visits I really need to take a bunch more photos - these guys and gals deserve a blog review.
There is one flavour I was obsessed with but as the flavours change all the time I only had it on two visits. It was either a lemon myrtle or lemon verbena. I paired it with a scoop of rosemary ice-cream (yes it's a thing) and it was like mum's roast chicken minus the chicken and really cold haha. I loved it. I regularly drive to ACT on work emergency short notice and Frugii, along with my Canberra friends, are a true highlight.

Nice little hid-away desert place. The pineapple ice cream was nice while the puff was bit tough to bite... the deserts look pretty and the taste are almost as good as the look. The service was nice.

The best thing is their everyday changing flavours. I just loved their ice cream. I had salty caramel and it was just too good.
Location-4
Taste-4.5
Value for money- 4
Staff-5

Great ice cream & dessert place, we stopped here everyday while we were here, and ended up sampling many items. The ice creams were rich & smooth (I had the salted caramel), the sorbet & gelato were refreshing (the blackberry tasted just like one imagine & was great). The ice pops were nice & light, but at the same time indulgent being alcohol infused. Also tried a couple of the choux buns, the lemon meringue tasted just like a lemon meringue, but the hazelnut one was my favourite. Will definitely go back when in Canberra again to sample more products.

On recent trip to Canberra, I couldn't help but notice how the active food scene is thriving in this small state. Everywhere you go there is a fantastic cafe, restaurant or take-away place just around the corner. I only managed to visit a handful of places, but no doubt I'll be back to try more.

Frugii is my go to when I need dessert for a small party of guests or customers after a dinner meeting.

The choux pastry puff with salted caramel custard is my fave but the ice creams and gelato are nice too.

Customer service is always lovely and the store always had plenty of room because lots of people take away like me.
Adventures In Winterland
You guys know how much I love a good fruit sorbet – anything fruity and I am totally there. After a catch up dinner at Golden Drum, we decided to go for a sneaky post-dinner-Frugii-run (that’s totally a thing). Presented with the usually amazing range of flavours, I predictably went for the fruity option – in this case, raspberry sorbet. I’m sure I’ve said this before, but I still consider Frugii to be some of the best value icecream in town – the portions are huge and the flavour quality is unparalleled – this visit was no exception. My large cup of raspberry sorbet was a complete delight, with each mouthful evoking the experience of biting into fresh raspberries, although without being quite as messy. The

Being named a laboratory, I was expecting a theatrical experience when they were preparing my ice cream but was disappointed as it was already pre~made. However, the flavours of salted caramel and lemon lime bitters made up for the disappointment. Not child friendly, more of a hang out for adults over cake, coffe and ice cream.

A great dessert spot hidden at the end of Lonsdale street in Braddon. Frugii should be commended for thinking outside the box when it comes to the flavours that they offer.

I opted for a combination of black truffle/laksa ice cream and while it sounds gross as a mix, it tasted great.

The ice cream was served at the perfect temperature, it wasn't frozen and 'Icey' and it wasn't on the verge of melting either - a lot of dessert places struggle with this.

The serving sizes were fair, I always find that boutique ice cream places tend to be a bit of a rip-off, however, Fruggi gives you a good dollop for your hard earned dollars.

Wow ! Yummy ! A very funky cafe. First thing I noticed was the floating tables. Came here looking for a sugar fix after dinner and this was the perfect place. Had a little hazelnut cake dessert thing, not sure what it was called but it which was absolutely divine. Inside it oozed nice hazelnut sauce! Didn't get around to trying the sorbet and ice creams sadly!
Orange_tree
A cute little dessert spot located inside a building. Seating inside is limited but a communal table outside helps with the spillover. I got a scoop of the Vietnamese green bean, one of their daily specials. It sounds weird but my Asian tastebuds found it a familiar flavour, reminiscent of ang ku kuih (google it). I was expecting gelato but the texture was harder and denser than normal so I think it may have been ice-cream. Nevertheless still enjoyable. The whole time we were there, the line of people never stopped but luckily it moved quickly.

Frugii Dessert Laboratory is a very different cafe: coffee, tea, a small selection of home made sorbet, ice cream and gelato which changes daily and a small selection of quite clever, speciality desserts. Everything is sensational and very reasonably priced. Recommended.

Best dessert in canberra 😝😝😝 Puffs there are so delicious especially the salted caramel favour... The staff there are so nice 🙋🏻
Plan to revisit again.....

The best dessert I ever had in canberra! We ordered two puffs, hazelnut and salted caramel. I was worrying it might be so sweet but it is not! Love that puff❤️
Lauren Green
Delicious chaoux pastry desserts and extremely tasty gelato, ice cream and sorbet. A good stop on the way home after dinner, not to big and a good price.

Very interesting and complex flavours - definitely for adults though. Brought my two kids here for special treat and ended up eating the verrine desserts they picked, which they decided they did not like. Tasted funny, they said. Of all the wonderfully insane ice cream flavours on offer, my kids were only happy with the vanilla flavour. To be fair, I picked the vanilla as they I didn't trust they would like any of the other flavours, and I really didn't have the stomach to eat up all their ice creams too. Frugii is a revelation and a gastronomic adventure but not a good idea to overload at the one sitting. Less is definitely more.
Piggypiggy
Love, love, love their ice creams! I look forward to & enjoy trying their new flavours - have tried truffle (one of my favourite), bergamot, lemongrass, hot cross bun, cinnamon donut, choc, salted caramel, vanilla, red peach to name a few...ice cream is so smooth and creamy and pretty good value for $5 a cup/cone.
MissPiggyEats
We visited here on the weekend for the first time and really enjoyed our gelato. The range of flavours on offer is small, but really interesting and different - pineapple, hot cross bun, Guinness, and Lemon Myrtle all being something we'd not seen before. Staff were happy for us to try a few flavours before deciding in the salted caramel.

The menu was not clear that the $5 price tag gives you two scoops - I really wish our server had told us this as we would've gone with more than one flavour...this annoyed me as it was obvious we were unsure what to order and that we'd not been here before, hence the trying of so many flavours.

Get in quick before this place becomes famous. Not possible to pick a favourite from the 3 desserts we tried (lemon meringue choux, hazelnut choux, LLB verrine) because they were ALL SO GOOD. Good balance of flavours/textures. Not overly sweet, which is good for the likes of me. Better than some of the famous dessert places in Melbourne IMO. Going back tomorrow to try their Pei Pa Koh (lowquat) ice cream!
Fatmine
We loved it. We loved it so much we came back for seconds the next day. Favourites was definitely the lemon Meringue, followed closely by the lemon lime bitters.
Hungryhungry
Just great. Imaginative, creative and delicious all in one. Top coffee, too. The tiny cheesecake with fruit gel topping was the stuff of dreams and the chocolate frozen mousse on a stick should be illegal it was that good.
Ausbeagle
Good ice cream but not outstanding and very limited menu. But it's good to have dedicated dessert places in Canberra (finally). The salted caramel ice cream is smooth and well balanced. I'd like to see either more flavours, stir-ins, or made fresh to order to make it a bit more exciting
G
The shop's situated within a building for those that aren't familiar with the vicinity. Simple and chic shop interior accompanied with friendly staff. Ice cream flavours change up periodically, and take home tubs are available.
The lemon myrtle ice cream was an absolute dream to combat the hot summer sun. Zesty and flavourful, without being all too sweet.
The choux on the other hand, was alright. The choux pastry dough would've been better if it was lighter and airier. Accompany it with some ice cream. They pair really well together.
In all, I'd definitely go back to check out more new ice cream flavours.
MoodandFood
Wonderful and new flavours of ice cream, gelato or sorbet are always available, some including rice pudding, cherry ripe (as pictured) or christmas pudding. However, the classic flavours like chocolate and vanilla bean are in a league of their own. Even though it's a classic, I always have one scoop of dark chocolate because it is so rich but not sickly sweet, and it doesn't have a powdery mouthfeel like other chocolate ice creams or gelato do.

Also, you can't come here and NOT get one of their choux pastries, and I highly recommend the lemon meringue one
Eat Like Ushi
On a hot Braddon evening, it seemed most apt to head to Frugii for dessert. The heat of the weather and also from the mild chillies from Mandalay Bus were still fresh and a cooling finale was sought. The icecream and gelato flavours were varied but it seemed difficult to go back the great 2-flavour combination of dark chocolate and cherry. I've spent a bit of time at home trying to recreate the dark chocolate cherry king shake that used to be on the winter menu at Cupping Room and so this was an easy choice. The dark chocolate was smooth and sweet, similar to a 65% block. The cherry had moderate flavour and complemented well. Of course the gin & tonic, lychee and espresso flavours also appealed but you have to can't have them all (well I can't at least)
James Cheng
The salted caramel choux pastry and salted caramel ice cream is deeeeelicioussss. I have always been a big fan of salted caramel and frugii does not disappoint in this department. Will definitely come back for more
Eat Canberra
I love Frugii and it makes me so excited that Canberra is home to this lip smackingly good dessert laboratory. Canberra was really lacking in the dessert department and I think Frugii has filled a massive foodie gap. It's a fun, funky hot spot that's tucked away under the new apartments at the end of Lonsdale St in Braddon. Parking is a bit of a pain in Braddon but the annoyance is worth it and if you have to walk a little way just think of it as exercise that will help work off those few extra calories ;-)

There are always more than 6 flavours of delicious ice cream, gelato or sorbet to choose from and a selection of other desserts that have a serious wow factor! For what it is, it's reasonable priced and you can get one of the choux pastries or other yummy creations for about $6.50. Frugii is good for every occasion! I usually take out of town visitors here for dessert and it makes for a perfect way to finish a date night with the love of your life. The salted caramel ice cream is a favourite and the musk is also a must try for something different. We always try to taste something new to go with out salted caramel yumminess. I've said it before and I'll say it again, thank you Frugii for bringing your creations to Canberra!
Jules
Excellent dessert place along Lonsdale street (right at the end inside the strange looking building). For a long time I put off going here because I couldn't be bothered walking all the way from the city centre all the way to the end of Braddon but I glad I did in the end because my last few visits to this dessert bar have been great.

You notice the decor immediately when you walk in. Mostly white, some sleekly designed furniture and the counter in front. Feels a bit like a science fiction movie set meets a medical clinic, very cool.

You basically got two options; the ice creams on the left of the counter or the verrines/choux pastries on the right. And they are all excellent and have a unique, modern aesthetic to them. For first time customers I recommend the salted caramel ice cream or the lemon meringue choux.
Jack
Interesting and sleek looking dessert bar. Well balance and unique flavours. Nice new refurbished setting. Highly recommended for dessert after a meal night out!

I have heard so much of this dessert place. It's a dessert laboratory tucked away in the hip and happening Braddon. To avoid the lines I made a beeline to do dessert first for the night.. I know I'm such a rebel..

I started off with their Salted Caramel Choux. The choux looks crunchy but its not. It's a slightly tough and slightly chewy layer to break through with the cutlery but once you do, it blends in immaculately with the heavenly divine salted caramel creme on the inside.

I had to control myself to take that initial shot before I wolfed it down. It was one of those sorry not sorry moments for my bad table manners... but you got to excuse me as this is too good to share.

Next up to be eaten was their parfait on a stick that resembled a Magnum Ice cream. This comprised of lychee liquor, coconut cream and white chocolate. I thought I swore off parfaits for life but this is definitely a game changer.

The lovely essence of lychee blended in the super smooth creamy texture... just left me wanting more.

The staff were beyond helpful as they carefully explain the menu and answered my curious questioning without any hesitation.

John Marshall's range of ice creams and cakes hosted in a decor that whispers minimalist is the perfect place to park your stomachs and bottoms after a meal in Braddon. I know I'll be back again and again to discover more of this alchemist's creations.

Frugii Dessert Laboratory is one of the best places in Canberra for ice cream and sorbet. With a range of different flavours that will fit everybody's preference. I had the lychee sorbet which had a wonderful and strong flavour of lychee whilst having a slight sour flavour. To me, it had an amazing fresh taste to it and was the best way to finish lunch. I will definitely come back in the future to indulge in other ice cream flavours and desserts.
Greedygreedyguts
Hip icecream nook in an artsy, trendy building on Lonsdale Street. I had scoops of rosewater and lychee and was struck by the clarity of flavour. Clean and pure, tasting exactly like their namesake. The rosewater was my favourite. It reminded me of Turkish Delight. Enjoy a few flavours while watching the bearded hipster guys get their hair done at Groomed.
Brett Scholz
Great icecream flavours and fantastic dessert choices. I like that the decor isn't too comfy because it means people don't sit around too much.

Canberra's Ice Cream man, Mr. Marshall is already well known for its ice cream and desserts creation around town. A trip to Canberra now is simply not complete without dropping by at his new dessert laboratory in Braddon area. The design is minimalist with every delicacies are all made in-house.

Mr. Frugii keeps on changing its flavours depending on what season it is with some classic vanilla and chocolate flavour. I chose their Bergamot and it was so light but still full of lovely floral and citrusy note flavour just like the one you find in Earl Grey tea.

As great as their ice cream is this irresistible Choux! They have several flavours to choose from but this time I went with their best seller, the Lemon Meringue Choux! The choux pastry was so light and perfectly puffed up with finest crispy crust, the filling was so refreshing, lemony and not too sweet with creamy toasted meringue on top.
Sharon
Such a cute little shop with amazing desserts. I've only ever been once but i am dying to go back. I went when it has just opened and I was so sad that I couldn't try more things as I had just had a big lunch. It's definitely worth your time if you are ever in Braddon.

Better second time, truffle ice cream was really nice.

Wow. Mr Frugii is the master of dessert. Such a great little place tucked in Braddon, if you come across Frugii, you will be taken into a whole new world of experimental flavour. From Truffle ice cream, to Seafood Laksa gelato.. These aren't your ordinary desserts! I have to say I wasn't really sure what to expect with the seafood laksa gelato, I gave it a taste but just couldn't go with it entirely, perhaps it was just too strange? (I do love strange things though!) however I fell in love with the Truffle ice cream (SO GOOD!) and also the Lychee sorbet, which tasted exactly like you were biting into a fresh lychee. I don't know how Mr Frugii does it, but it's really up there in my list of best dessert shops I've been to. Highly recommend!
(visited on 12/07/15)

I used to buy ice cream from Frugii when they were at the Capital Region Farmers Market. When I heard that they were opening up a shop in Braddon, I was incredibly keen, because I knew I could get my Frugii fix more often than what I was able to before. I now stop by their dessert laboratory almost every week. I love trying the different flavours of ice creams and desserts. There are new flavours every week! My favourite ice cream flavours are the salted caramel, tonka bean, and the gulab jamun. Some of the flavours of the choux pastries that I have tried have not been to my taste, but there is no question that they are well made.

John and his wife are lovely. The service is good. $5 for QUALITY ice cream is actually a great price. I am so glad that Frugii is here in Canberra!

This is worth it even if it's winter and freezing cold.
Had salted butter caramel, limon something pattatone. (:
It's worth while. Nice environment too

John Marshall is an ice cream god, and while we miss him at the Farmers Markets, it's great to see Frugii going so well. Some of the flavours are surprisingly simple yet so complex in their actual flavour, while others you wouldn't have even thought of (like Seafood Laksa). Great desserts as well - the choux pastries are beautiful and light.

Frugii. Just read through the postings on this blog. Regards the 1st blogger who was negative. I guess I come from a different ( pre Mcdonalds )generation . I actually like talking to the people behind the counter , and finding out about the products. Also, I feel the pricing is very reasonable for a non mass produced product. Quality takes time and effort , Thank you Frugii for a small island of quality in this bland , mass produced world.

User reviews. Fantastic icecream. great price. delicious

Unbelievable flavours!. Frugii is incredible. I don't know how they make these flavours but they are amazing! The liquorice ice cream blew my mind! $5 for a smallish serve is fine with me - a little of this quality and flavour goes a long way. Worth visiting at least once a month to check out the latest varieties.

Amazing. Mr Frugii is so delightful and has so much passion ! I love everything and have taken/will continue to go here with friends and family ! (remember having a business isnt cheap) THE ICECREAM & more ARE WELL WORTH THE PRICES)

Nothing special , defiantly overrated. Average service. Needs signs and labels. Room for improvement

I first met John Marshall about seven years ago when he was making his superb Frugii icecream in his spare time at his Canberra home. Fast forward seven years and he has given up his day job in IT to concentrate on his passion for making icecream, chocolate and extravagant cakes and pastries. John and his wife Ed opened Frugii Dessert Laboratory in the Ori building in Lonsdale Street, Braddon, in mid-January. Already the business has exceeded all expectations. The queue on the opening night snaked outside the building and onto the footpath, and 180 cakes were sold in 30 minutes. They’ve been run off their feet almost every night since.

Mr Frugii on Lonsdale Street Braddon can be tricky to find, but just watch for the long line of happy customers emerging from the new Ori building opposite the old Lonsdale Street Traders.
Offering a short list of great flavours, it pays to be adventurous ( the musk is wonderful) and free tastes are offered...

I've probably mentioned this before, but I'm literally always amazed at all the cool new places that seem to constantly be popping up in Canberra. I hadn't visited in a fair while so needless to say, I had a long list of places to try. One of those places was Frugii Dessert laboratory , claiming to have the world's best ice-cream. Frugii ice cream is organic, with no added colours or flavours. Frugii is located in the Ori building located in the newly jazzed up precinct in Braddon - the same building houses a retro barber shop and a handful of small boutiques. Choux pastries As soon as I walked into the shop, my eyes diverted to the cabinet full of these beautiful choux pastries. Indecisiveness kicks in and I end up spending a good fives minutes just trying to narrow down my choice. Orange and praline choux I end up choosing the orange and praline combination and it was divine. The citrus flavour cuts through the richness of the praline. The lovely girl behind the counter actually recommended the lemon meringue flavour, so I'll definitely be trying that next time. Salted butter caramel ice cream I definitely couldn't leave without trying some ice cream, so I decided a on a scoop of the decadent sounding salted butter caramel. I can see why Frugii touts itself on having the best ice cream - it's smooth, creamy and the caramel flavour is lovely. Not sure if this one's a regular flavour, but highly recommend getting it!

Great ice-cream and desserts. They finally got some signage done and it looks awesome. Can't wait to try some of their other ice-cream flavours.

Amazing!!
Nine pm and the people are still pouring in the door - at least 25 in the last 10 minutes or so!
Delighted to find my favourite Musk Stick Icecream available tonight. Memories of childhood.
Don't understand how John Marshall creates such wonderfully complex flavours.
Also on the menu tonight are Pink Grapefruit Sorbet (exquisite) and Rosemary Gelato (which I sadly didn't get a chance to try, but described by the young lady next to me as "interesting but delicious").
The icecreams, sorbets and gelato are so good we haven't yet been able to get past them to try the fascinating looking desserts.
We have tried so many of John's fabulous creations at the Farmers Market, it is great to see them available to a much wider range of people at the Dessert Laboratory.

Being a lover of all things salted caramel, I knew I had to try Frugii’s salted butter caramel ice-cream. I cannot believe I’m actually saying this but I actually prefer salted butter caramel over salted caramel. The ice-cream itself was velvety smooth and the flavour was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of caramel sweetness and buttery saltiness.
My second scoop of ice-cream was cardamom spice. For all those chai lovers, this is the flavour for you! Once again, the consistency of the ice-cream was deliciously smooth and creamy with a real cardamom kick to it.

The much loved Frugii gelato and sorbet can now be found at the Frugii Dessert Laboratory on Lonsdale Street in Braddon. It opened its doors today in the brand new Ori apartment building (other Lonsdale Street Traders shops such as Moxom and Whitney and Handsomepretty are also open there). For those unfamiliar with Frugii, no products are made with artificial colouring or flavouring. John Marshall, or Mr Frugii, concocts some truly amazing flavours – truffle, smokey bacon, salted butter caramel, beer and more. I usually have my fix at the Bus Depot Markets. However, the Frugii cart can also be found at the Handmade Markets and other locations around Canberra. Back to the Dessert Laboratory – It is a fitting name for Mr Frugii with a passion for chemistry and 15 years of research and testing of gelato under his belt. The Canberra Times reports that the laboratory itself will be added to the shop at a later stage where plated desserts and Heston Blumenthal-style creations will be on offer – liquid nitrogen and carbon dioxide coming our way soon! The fit out inside is simple, white and clean keeping a lab feel to the store. There are a couple of communal tables and seats along the window to enjoy your tasty treats but most people walk in and out happily licking a scoop of the day’s gelato flavours. At this stage, the Dessert Laboratory is offering cakes, verrines (trifle-like desserts), ice creams on a stick, a selection of Frugii gelati and sorbets, and coffee. There were four desserts left (apart from the gelati) when I reached the laboratory after work. I’d missed out on one verrine which had sold out earlier in the day. So I chose the chocolate verrine ($6) with layers of chocolate mousse, chocolate crumble, chocolate waffle balls, caramel and (I think) mango mousse at the bottom. A pretty dessert that tasted just as good! Then there was a little choux pastry filled with custard and a lemon, lime and bitter squeezy tube on top ($6). Squeeze the contents to inject t

I absolutely love Mr Frugii’s ice cream, I remember when I use to wake up early on Saturday or Sundays just to head down to either the Bus Depot Market or the EPIC Capital Regional Market to get my hand on this awesomeness. Now I can just walk down the street, and better yet, I don’t have to wait until the weekends to get my ice cream fix! You have no idea how much the opening of this place changes how I will live my life...

This place has only recently opened and it’s been all over social media in Canberra, some of my favourite Canberra food bloggers seem to go there repeatedly. On entry there are two main areas, the cakes and the ice cream. On Friday night they had three choux pastry cakes. Bron chose a rose water pastry with a red love heart on it and I chose a chocolate custard pastry with injectable raspberry sauce. The choux pastry was delicious. The pastry itself was perfect in its consistency and the custard was buttery smooth. The raspberry sauce really complemented the chocolate nicely. The salted caramel ice cream was OMG good. Bron and I both had it and we both enjoyed how strong the caramel flavour was. That said I reckon Bron’s salted caramel is the best I’ve ever tasted. The set up in Mr Frugii’s makes for rapid turnover of customers. It seems to be an efficient process with customers coming to ask about the cakes and ice cream every few minutes. I hope the staff behind the counters get some free cake and ice cream at the end of their shifts. We’d both highly recommend Mr Frugii for dessert.

A chocoholic Belgian, TimmyC and a foodie walked into a bar Frugii dessert laboratory.

It sounds like the beginning of a joke but it was my reality two weekends ago as we slipped away from the Multicultural festival and took a friend of mine to Frugii Dessert Laboratory for the first time.
