Review Mr Wei's - Canberra

Food is good. its delicious. service is excellent. but is a bit expensive considering there are other restaurants within the vicinity with just as good of a quality. But unlike restaurants like Blue ginger this place charges rice as per bowl instead of per head. the chairs are very uncomfortable. next time I'm ordering takeaway.

Beijing roast duck place with yum fried dumplings too 😋 little bit expensive for some of the dishes you get but quality over quantity.

Food was great! It was tasty and come in generous portion. There is a good mix of flavour. We ordered pan fried dumplings among other things and they were delicious. It's rather busy as we went there for dinner on Saturday night so make sure you book a table.

The staff was so friendly and helpful. The meals came out really quickly. The meals were all delicious. We had the duck with pancakes and it was delicious. The eggplant starter was crisp and tasty. The steak was tender. Fried rice was fresh and tasty. It was the most tender pork belly with a lovely sauce. I was glad we ordered a side of vegetables as it balanced the meals with a light and crisp, yet subtle taste.

We have been to Mr. Weis which is situated in Canberra a few times, each time we are in Canberra, we visit. Its usually well attended so its better to contact them prior to attending to book a table. It is has no frills table settings but the food is great. There is a large varied menu as well as blackboard daily specials. The meals are delivered pretty promptly. The prices are a bit above average but I suppose that comes with the quality of the food and it is popular. Thanks Mr. Weis for tea. They also allowed excess food to be taken home.

This place is awesome! The food is amazing! The menu is quite small but what's on the menu is perfect!! The service is always fantastic! Also to the person who gave Mr Wei's 1 star, I don't know where you were eating but it wasn't Mr Wei's! They don't serve lamb chops!!

The Peking duck was not authentic at all. It was obviously prepared in advance and heated in a microwave before being served to us. No crispy skin. Very disappointed. The duck dishes were not freshly prepared. We did enjoy the vegetarian dish though. Good customer service.

A great spot for a casual weeknight meal. We tried a few their dishes (see photos), and standouts really were their dumplings. I enjoyed both boiled and fried pork dumplings. Yum!

Great little place in town. Ducked in for a nice quiet lunch and was pleasantly surprised by this little gem. Wasn't too busy when I was there which was great. Food was really good which was a shock given the lack of patronage? I suppose it may have been due to time of day and year.

Mr Wei’s is conveniently close to the canberra Theatre making it a good spot to try for a pre-theatre dinner. Prices are quite high, but it does offer 25% discount for the Canberra Entertaimnet Card and BYO wine at $10 per bottle. It also has some very delicious choices that can be shared which makes the final price reasonable.

We found this place after checking out several other Chinese restaurants around Canberra City and decided to try them out as it was very clean and full of customers - always a good sign!

We ordered the Crispy Chicken in Golden Sands, Pan-fried Vegetarian Dumplings and Veg Fried Rice to share. The outstanding winner was the Crispy Chicken without a doubt - the flavours all came together and worked nicely with the fresh lettuce cups.

The only disappointment I found was that we were not offered fresh bowls after the entree, which would have been preferable as the Crispy Chicken was quite 'crumby'. Also, soy sauce was served in a small bowl with a teaspoon rather than a bottle, which made it difficult to administer.

Overall however, the food was delish and well priced, so very happy with the experience!

For some reason there was a craving for duck. Maybe it was just that I hadn't had Peking duck for a very long time and the memories of China and my favourite duck of all time in London was on my mind. Luckily Mr. Wei's not only specialises in Beijing duck but also conveniently has an Entertainment Book 25% coupon. - Baby eggplant - I thought that for a balanced meal with vegetables, fried eggplant was a good idea. It was a decent mix of sauce and fried eggplant whilst waiting for the duck, but largely unnecessary; - Beijing duck - a whole duck is a huge amount for 2 people. The duck skin wasn't particularly crisp (which was a bit disappointing) and had a small fat layer (less than is traditional but more than I probably prefer for eating without picking it off) and reasonably soft meat. Once wrapped up, it was a nice combination without having an overly memorable duck flavour; - Duck soup - this was a delicious strongly flavoured duck broth (like I'd want my duck congee to taste) with tofu, vegetables and meat. On a cold night, this was hearty and soul-warming; - Duck fried rice - the filler dish that was more. Duck fatty meat and skin pieces bringing flavour and fragrance to fried rice. Much better than expected. Overall although the duck wasn't as good as I'd hoped (or expected), the overall meal was lifted very well by the soup and fried rice. I'll definitely be back with my next Entertainment Book voucher. I wouldn't get the extra entree next time.

Mr Wei’s on London Circuit is conveniently close to the Canberra Theatre complex, making it a good spot for a quick meal before an event. It’s open 6 days for lunch and dinner (closed Sundays).

Prices seem a little high and corkage is $10 per bottle, but if you have the Canberra Entertainment Book, it helpfully offers a 25% discount...

Don't be put off by the rating. I nearly didn't go and that would have been a HUGE mistake! Dumplings were delicious but the Peking duck...amazing! Give it a go...perfect before a show at the canberra theatre!

I've enjoyed quite a few lunch and dinner meals here and really enjoy the genuine, almost clumsy but well meaning service... The prices are on the higher side but the food is spectacular! Set aside an extra ten bucks and enjoy this lovely place with fine dining quality.

Amazingly good :). Highly recommend, So good. The Crispy duck was sensational, the panfried dumplings were spectacular and the eggplant dish was so delicious and delicate with a crispy outside and a soft eggplant centre. so good!!!

Not authentic Chinese, not well done fusion. It's our first time at the Mr Wei's, rather disappointing. Apart from the duck dish, others are all very average and westernised. The service is poor too. For a upper market Chinese restaurant as it seems to believe or one will assume based on the price, there is even not much real Chinese tea to offer. If you want Jasmine tea, the only option is the tea bag from supermarket. A couple of dishes we tried are far less tasty that those at the Red Chilli! So we have tried, and won't go back again.

Authentic Northern Chinese food. Don't expect to find your 'Aussie' sweet & sour pork here! Mr Wei is authentic northern Chinese inspired cooking.
The dumplings are superb, best I've had outside of Beijing. The wonton soup is a consommé - yellow and clear, with 2 tasty wonton and 2 small beef balls, light serve of noodles & green veg.
This was a fantastic find. The people who have rated this place poorly just don't know good authentic Chinese cooking. If you've travelled to China, you'll enjoy these authentic flavours.

On a Cold Winters Night in Canberra. On a Tuesday Evening recently 3 of us went to Mr Wei's before going to a concert. Thinking it would be busy I booked a table. We were surprised to be one of only two tables. The welcoming hostess was friendly and efficient. We ordered the Prawn Potstickers based on previous recommendations on Urbanspoon and they did not disappoint and the Cut Baby Eggplant (V) which was the Stand Out Dish of the evening - really delicious. These dishes were followed by a mountain of Duck Fried Rice, Beef Cheek Mussaman Curry and Slow Cooked Pork Belly with Vinegared Capsicum (this we ate as intended, with the skin). All the dishes were lovely, although we could not finish them and took a doggy box home to enjoy later. This is a terrific place with great food and great service. GO!

Superb Beijing Duck and Eggplant. Just had Chinese New Year with a group of eight.

Must agree about the service which is oddly well meaning, but the food more than makes up for it. The Beijing Duck is as good as I have had anywhere else including Sydney and Melbourne. Cooked to perfection, not fatty or greasy at all, light and golden and full of flavor.

The Baby Eggplant is a joy to look at and melts in the mouth, and good as it was everything else matched.

Definitely a go back. Dine don't quick lunch, not that it is expensive, quite the contrary, we ate very well for $35 a head including corkage and tips.

Good Fine Chinese Food. This newly opened Chinese restaurant is intended to be a fine dining Chinese restaurant. It's decorated with white table clothes, white clothed serviettes and forks and spoons complimented with good customer service. A condensed menu means more delicate dishes (hopefully). Their speciality is the roast duck in 3 ways (or 3 different dishes). If there are only 4 to 6 people, I advise to get just 1/2 a duck. At least you get to enjoy other dishes.
The eggplants were a delight and so were the dumplings.
Compared to other fine dining Chinese restaurant in town (eg Chairman & Yip, Wild Duck, Malamay), the dishes at Mr. Wei's are more Chinese style than contemporary like the others.

Great beef salad. I have eaten here a couple of times with friends and love the duck pancakes, dumplings and a couple of the other dishes. I agree that the staff are inexperienced, but have found them to be responsive and the food to be good. It possibly helps that I have been with friends that can order in Chinese, but I have walked away happy both times that I went.

Long Wei to Go!. Very disappointed. The restaurant hasn't decided whether it is a quick service-and-clear-away Chinese a'la Dickson or a proper mid-tier restaurant.

We sent back the entree of pork ribs because it was just bone and batter, no meat. We ordered Margaret River by-the-glass and were given something that was poured out of sight and clearly inferior. We then insisted on the wine being poured from the bottle at our table and it was correct.

The front of house staff seriously need hospitality training. We had a reservation and they hadn't planned for it. Main plates were taken away while the other person was still eating. Staff tried far too hard to push the house speciality Beijing Duck (Canberra people are not silly. Don't tell your guest that 'most people choose the duck' (at $89) when most clearly don't. We were seated by the kitchen doorway and had clear visibility of the plates going out). One look at the table cloth and we asked for it to be replaced. The list goes on. The Szechuan pork strap was tasty and presented well.

There is much better in town.

Expensive entree!. I needed a bit of food before doing volunteer work at the Canberra Theatre. 11.00 am on a Saturday. I was asked did I want lunch or a snack. I answered snack. Ordered the Chicken wonton soup. It came in a rice bowl sized bowl. Two wontons, 2 minute meatballs, some stock and a little bit of chopped up spring onion and a few noodles. I had to ask for chopsticks for the noodles. They were the disposable variety you get for takeaway. I was a bit shocked to pay $12.50 for this, and leave hungry

The Peking duck came out served on a cute platter. The duck meat was sliced thinly with a bit of soft skin on top. It looked pretty good on the plate. The meat itself was soft, juicy and tasty. However, this isn't the Peking duck that I'm used to with the dark red skin and awesome sweet flavour so I couldn't help but feel a tad disappointed.

The lemongrass chicken ($22.50) came out first and I was salivating as it smelled DELICIOUS with wonderfully strong flavours and spices. It was coated and marinated in a rosemary, celery and garlic paste with other spices and then char-gilled.

I had been here previously for a lunch banquet but I didn’t get around to posting about it (and I’ve been reminded ever since – thanks Thomas), so when I couldn’t get into Wild duck for dinner, I knew the next best thing – Mr. Wei’s in the city. I knew it was a shaky start when I had booked that afternoon and they said ‘see you tonight’ but when I arrived several hours later they were confused about/lost my booking for three people. It didn’t matter, it wasn’t booked out and after being asked by four staff if I wanted a table for three in a short succession, we were led to a table by the window (I don’t think their English is that strong). The lanterns are very cute when they light up at night. Pan fried pork dumplings ($13.50) . These pot stickers had little crunchy bits around each dumpling, it could have been a tad crunchier but the filling had a little bit of ‘soup’ inside which I really liked. A tasty filling with pork and shallots . Signature dish Beijing roast duck - duck panc
