Surprisingly for a fish and chips shop, this place has some of the best vegan food in town. Love their vegan "fish" burger, great vegan sauces, yummy chips. Also love the expanding vegan menu- the loaded chips are delicious...keep expanding!
The vegan hoi sin duck fries and their vegan milkshakes are to die for. Legit one of the best meals I've had in years. Will be back to try the rest of the range!
Plant based Fish & Chips! 🙌
Currently in Canberra and heard some rave reviews for @thecanberrafishshack , so thought I'd see what all the fuss is about.
I probably haven't eaten actual fish from a take away shop for well over 5yrs, but the texture and taste is very identical to what I remember.
Sometimes your mock meats can be a bit bland or even rubbery, but these vegan fish bites are simply amazing!
Beautiful crispy batter and nicely salted 👌
The price is a little steep I found ($14 for what's pictured), but that doesn't deter from what is an amazing dish!

The go to place in Civic if you are craving for fish and chips.
My personal favourite is the seafood basket.
They have some really good burgers as well.
Definitely value for money.
we had a shack basket, tempura seafood and kids calarmari a week ago. today we tried laksa and fried chicken burger. if you sign up and order with their app, you get $5 off with the first order. so far, the food did the disappoint. great quality and fresh seafood. this was the first fish and chips outlet that i could choose chips, wedges or sweet potatao chips without an extra charge. there is also a good selection of sauces that you can select for free if you buy a seafood and chips meal. i would say, this is ranks top 3 on my list of favourite fish and chips shops.
Decent fish and chips from a place I didn't manage to get to on my previous visits to Canberra. We ordered:
1. The Shack Basket $16.50 (Soft shell crab, salt & pepper squid, fish and tempura prawns)
2. Tempura Seafood Selection $16.50 (Tempura battered fish, prawns and squid dusted with in-house spice, served with salad)
3. Calamari Rings $8.50 kids size (Suculent rings crumbed option)
All meals come with chips (sweet potato available as an option on the kids meal) and choice of sauce. and I ordered online using their app for the $5 saving on my first order. Food was ready for collection 11 mins after ordering.
There's a few other items on the menu I'm keen to try so a revisit is on the cards if I can fit it in before I leave.
Their fish and chips are always freshly made and the burgers are delicious. And the sugar cane juice reminds me of the summer in Singapore. Will definitely recommend to friends.
Honestly such a gem. It doesn't look like much but the seafood and vegan 'seafood' is exceptional. The $10 seafood basket is delicious. The vegan prawns, fish sticks and calamari are scarily good and realistic. The chips are super crunchy and well seasoned. Service is great and food always fresh. Price is reasonable, would definitely recommend
Tonight was a random winter's night in Canberra, however, randomly I was craving fish and chips and my adventure began!
I was really surprised by the Fish Shack, I wasn't expecting a lot, however, I was pleasantly surprised. The batter was good quality and there was actually a substantial difference between them in texture and taste. I believe that the fish we received was blue grenadier, a typical fish and chips type of fish!
The prices were good and the complimentary sauce was great too. I'll definitely come back next time I'm craving some fish and chips in Canberra.
Loved everything on the menu! The salt and pepper squid dish was divine. Cooked to perfection. The same goes with their popular dishes; mix grill, shack basket, fish and chips.
The only place in Canberra I ever really go for fish and chips. Used to go there often when I was in ANU. Returned recently and happy to note that it's still the best.
On my last visit to Canberra, for work, I really searched for a bunch of unique and affordable places to eat – they had to meet price criteria and also have a great score on Urbanspoon, now Zomato. THE FISH SHACK was one of these places, I faced a mind boggling moment that there could be superb seafood venue that wasn’t on the coast but the peeps had spoken, I needed to try this place out so off I headed to find it. Possibly my worst attempt to actually locate a dinner venue. I parked in the area and walked and walked and walked, asked people, walked some more and eventually pretended I was a car and got there via my phone’s TomTom ap following roads.
