Surprisingly for a fish and chips shop, this place has some of the best vegan food in town. Love their vegan "fish" burger, great vegan sauces, yummy chips. Also love the expanding vegan menu- the loaded chips are delicious...keep expanding!
The vegan hoi sin duck fries and their vegan milkshakes are to die for. Legit one of the best meals I've had in years. Will be back to try the rest of the range!
The seafood mixed grill was fantastic. I highly recommend this dish. Beautifully cooked and extremely satisfying. Brett had the beef burger which was also cooked perfectly. This is ideal for the non seafood person.
They do gluten free fish and chips, and calamari. The food is always amazing and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful
The vegan food is so good! The mushroom tastes so much like beef it's kind of scary. My favourite is the vegan chicken burger, so yum!
Thank you I really appreciate your vegan menu with a great variety of delicious options. The mushroom burger is like the best burger in Canberra! And the sugar cane juice is delicious too.
I had the vegan mushroom burger and it was incredible!! highly recommend it and I can't wait to try everything else on Fish Shack's vegan menu
Best fish and chips shop in canberra! The food is amazing and the staff is really friendly. You can also get a nice coffee or a (what I would highly recommend) sugarcane juice if you just want to sit down for a chat and a drink. All in all its definitly worth a visit.
Great food and great service! Highly recommend the seafood laksa, the crispy schnitzel, and classic beer battered fish n chips!
Grilled fish, fish burger and seafood basket was awesome. Good job. Keep it up
freshhhh ingredients, delicious food and nice services <3 <3 <3 my favourite place <3 highly recommend for sugarcane juice with slice of lemon <3
Great vegan food that holds you close and sings to you when your down.
Had the vegan fish burger and it was amazing! Fast and friendly service too. I'll definitely be back.
Absolutely the best I've had in Canberra and always the best service too... winner winner fish shak dinner!
Plant based Fish & Chips! 🙌
Currently in Canberra and heard some rave reviews for @thecanberrafishshack , so thought I'd see what all the fuss is about.
I probably haven't eaten actual fish from a take away shop for well over 5yrs, but the texture and taste is very identical to what I remember.
Sometimes your mock meats can be a bit bland or even rubbery, but these vegan fish bites are simply amazing!
Beautiful crispy batter and nicely salted 👌
The price is a little steep I found ($14 for what's pictured), but that doesn't deter from what is an amazing dish!

The go to place in Civic if you are craving for fish and chips.
My personal favourite is the seafood basket.
They have some really good burgers as well.
Definitely value for money.
we had a shack basket, tempura seafood and kids calarmari a week ago. today we tried laksa and fried chicken burger. if you sign up and order with their app, you get $5 off with the first order. so far, the food did the disappoint. great quality and fresh seafood. this was the first fish and chips outlet that i could choose chips, wedges or sweet potatao chips without an extra charge. there is also a good selection of sauces that you can select for free if you buy a seafood and chips meal. i would say, this is ranks top 3 on my list of favourite fish and chips shops.
Decent fish and chips from a place I didn't manage to get to on my previous visits to Canberra. We ordered:
1. The Shack Basket $16.50 (Soft shell crab, salt & pepper squid, fish and tempura prawns)
2. Tempura Seafood Selection $16.50 (Tempura battered fish, prawns and squid dusted with in-house spice, served with salad)
3. Calamari Rings $8.50 kids size (Suculent rings crumbed option)
All meals come with chips (sweet potato available as an option on the kids meal) and choice of sauce. and I ordered online using their app for the $5 saving on my first order. Food was ready for collection 11 mins after ordering.
There's a few other items on the menu I'm keen to try so a revisit is on the cards if I can fit it in before I leave.
Their fish and chips are always freshly made and the burgers are delicious. And the sugar cane juice reminds me of the summer in Singapore. Will definitely recommend to friends.
Honestly such a gem. It doesn't look like much but the seafood and vegan 'seafood' is exceptional. The $10 seafood basket is delicious. The vegan prawns, fish sticks and calamari are scarily good and realistic. The chips are super crunchy and well seasoned. Service is great and food always fresh. Price is reasonable, would definitely recommend
Tonight was a random winter's night in Canberra, however, randomly I was craving fish and chips and my adventure began!
I was really surprised by the Fish Shack, I wasn't expecting a lot, however, I was pleasantly surprised. The batter was good quality and there was actually a substantial difference between them in texture and taste. I believe that the fish we received was blue grenadier, a typical fish and chips type of fish!
The prices were good and the complimentary sauce was great too. I'll definitely come back next time I'm craving some fish and chips in Canberra.
Loved everything on the menu! The salt and pepper squid dish was divine. Cooked to perfection. The same goes with their popular dishes; mix grill, shack basket, fish and chips.
The only place in Canberra I ever really go for fish and chips. Used to go there often when I was in ANU. Returned recently and happy to note that it's still the best.
On my last visit to Canberra, for work, I really searched for a bunch of unique and affordable places to eat – they had to meet price criteria and also have a great score on Urbanspoon, now Zomato. THE FISH SHACK was one of these places, I faced a mind boggling moment that there could be superb seafood venue that wasn’t on the coast but the peeps had spoken, I needed to try this place out so off I headed to find it. Possibly my worst attempt to actually locate a dinner venue. I parked in the area and walked and walked and walked, asked people, walked some more and eventually pretended I was a car and got there via my phone’s TomTom ap following roads.
Worth a try. This is some of the most expensive fish & chips I've ever had, but it's probably the best I've ever had, so I'm not complaining. I got the mixed seafood basket and I do not regret it.
Canberra's Best Kept Secret. Please delete this page urbanspoon... i don't want anyone else to know about this place. It's too good to share.
Soft Shell Crab Burger with Chips. It was really good.
Fresh. Freshest and best cooked seafood in the ACT
Gotta go. I decided to go here because of all the votes on this site and boy was I glad I did. I had the soft shell crab burger with chips. delicious! some of the best chips I've ever had, lightly crunchy and perfectly cooked. The soft shell crab burger was scrumptious with a beautiful bun, tomatoes that tasted like a real tomato should taste and a delicious sauce. Food tasted light and not greasy. It's pretty awesome that it's BYO and they don't charge corkage. I can't wait to try the fish with a glass of wine. great job.
One of the best fish and chips places in Canberra. Always come here when I am in need of a fish or seafood fix. The deep fried menu items are always crisp and not greasy, and the grilled fish dishes are never overdone. I've only had one dish where I wasn't impressed - it was a special of the week (chilli fisherman's basket), and the dipping sauce tasted like ABC chilli sauce mixed with mayo. It was quite lacklustre and I ended up leaving the sauce mostly untouched.
Great Burgers. The soft shelled crab burger is a must!!
Seafood basket-just yummy!
Great!. Awesome fish and chips! hot, crispy, not too oily, fish is lovely and fresh, all with fantastic service. And they do gluten-free! really REALLY GOOD gluten-free :-D
Awesome! A little hard to find at first been out of townies, but what a little gem! Partner had the soft shell crab burger, loved so much he wanted another! Crab was cooked to perfection not greasy and the crab was still soft. I had the crumbed fish & chips, served with salad. Yummo def recommend if you are in Canberra
Fish greatness. If you walk past this place, you need to stop for the grilled fish. I'm serious. When I worked in the Canberra Centre I would come out here for lunch on fine days. The order usually takes about 15-20 minutes to pop out at lunch time, but when it does you'll experience fish delight, with the deliciously-seasoned and juicy fish complemented by simple fat chips. I don't even really like chips much, but dip them in the aioli that comes with the meal and I'm good to go. You don't get a massive slab of fish, but in my opinion it's the right amount: enough without wearing out its welcome. Grab one of the complementary stack of newspapers, sit in the sun with your paper tray of fish'n'chips, and live the dream.
It's a no-frills place, little more than a pop-up, but the quality of the fish punches well above it's weight - and price! Chips a little soggy but value for money and lovely staff more than compensate...
Seafood so fresh and delicious that you'll forget you're 3 hours from the coast!
Incredible. The burgers Deserves infamous status and staff are beyond friendly. Every trip through Canberra will be highlighted with a stop at the fish shack from now on.
The best fish and chips in town I pop back in soon Wen I'm in town Cheers
And they are pretty damn good - the fish is very fresh, the batter is light and crunchy and the chips are lovely and crisp. At lunch time there can be a bit of a wait, so a hot tip is to ring your order in ahead of time so it's ready to collect when you arrive.
