Review Red Chilli Sichuan - Canberra

Graeme Brown
Excellent food, vegetarian spring rolls, Chinese Bread Fried and Steamed w/condensed milk and green onion pancakes for entree. Followed by Kong Poa Chicken w/peanuts for main course. All the meals were delicious. Customer service was under the pump as it was full - and I don't think that is a bad thing. Will go again to try something different

New favourite Chinese restaurant in Canberra! Tengjiao Chicken General Tso's Chicken w/extra chilli Hot Pot Beef A 'wow' meal! 🤤🤤🤤😍😍😍
Rice is life
Staff have been very unwelcoming every occasion we go there. Back then this was the only place that did ma la style dishes. But now there’s plenty more to choose from. This is my first time back after the pandemic and the quality of the food has really declined. I’ve noticed the menu has also changed. Not sure if management has changed also. I would recommend this place had the quality of the food stayed the same but unfortunately it’s not. There are better Szechuan and mala places to try these days

Authentic Sichuan food so be prepared for the spice and chilli! The food here is beautiful and crisp. Quite a variety of choices and it’s popular among the mainlanders too. This place is also great for group bookings and you can hire out a little private room. But it might be hard for the kids to eat such spicy food. The ambience and atmosphere adds to the authentic experience. Definitely a good place to come back to.

Used to love their dry hotpot and huo guo(hotpot) a lot. I even went there once a week when I was really into it. But I feel the tastes are not the same any more after Covid-19. All other friends who went with me felt the same. Disappointing.

Good costumer service, so delicious thank you 😊 😋 yum yum 😋

Excellent spicy Sichuan food, staff speaking manners can be improved with training, lovely decor and reasonable prices for most dishes, expect higher prices for seafood. My family loved the salt & pepper soft shell crab, Sichuan intestines with asparagus lettuce, ma Po tofu. I personally found the intestine dish a bit too salty for my taste though the intestines and veggies were delicious otherwise. There are non spicy dishes as well so if you have someone with a weaker stomach, get them the soupy or broth dishes. The Chinese steamed and fried bread dipped in condensed milk was absolutely delicious. Great for young kids if they are fussy over other food. The restaurant has a licensed bar.

I've never eaten dry hotpot. So before order, i asked to staff to got recommend what kind of material was good. But they could not recommend to me. Looks like she didn't know well about it. Food taste was good. But staff need more knowlege about food that sell in the restaurant.

Pleasantly surprised. The century egg dish was my favourite, the chilli sauce paired excellently with the creamy egg. The beef hot pot was yum also with slices of beef that have that soft Chinese restaurant texture I love. It was on the oily side but you kind of expect that. There were lots of Asian diners so you know you are in a legit Chinese establishment. The sweet chilli chicken was also yum, it didn't taste like Western sweet chilli, a bit more subtle.

We were in lobby and waiting for the take-away. After 40 minutes, we ran out our patience (because we ordered the same dishes usually it takes 20minutes). And we were told the dishes were finished for a long time, but she couldn’t find us in the lobby. ???? We were sitting nearby the gate, it’s only 2 meters from the order desk ok????

Very popular and authentic restaurant. Service reasonably fast, space a little bit grubby & tired but okay. Food was greasy with heavy gluggy sauces - strong in flavour (salt/spice/soy) but lacking all nuance or complexity. Portions are generous but I struggled to enjoy this.

This by far the worst restaurant I have ever been too. I went there with my family last night for an early dinner. I ordered a Dan Dan mince soup and it was full of noddles and no mince. The rice was cold and crystal steamed shrimp had no shrimp in them but one tiny baby prawn. We got the Stir fried shredded pork that had no flavour. After an hour of waiting for our last dish which was Salt n Pepper Soft Shell Crab which I had to go and ask for it. It finally came out it was oily and just plain batter. We had to ask for fresh rice because by the time the meals came out it even colder. We didn't eat much of it and when I asked for take away containers they were charging 50cent per container. Even the floor was sticky, dirty and the staff were so crumby. I have never been to a restaurant this bad, safe to say that will be the first and the last.

You know it is the best restaurant in Canberra. The spicy pot is a good choice if you can eat spicy food. Stir fried beef slices with sweet and sour source and stir fried pork in Peking source are amazing. I eat there at least once a week.
Maeloke97
I was craving dry mala and this satisfied my craving. I ordered medium spicy level and it wasn’t really that spicy. If you really can take spicy food, you should try the spiciest level.

An excellent Chinese restaurant. Food was extremely flavourful and portion sizes were generous. Only criticism was it took some time for my companions main to arrive after mine had. Apart from that, very happy with the food and service, I would recommend a visit.
Authenticity
The Dan Dan noodles has lost its heritage, it was nothing more than spicy sauce on spaghetti. No aroma and no chilli oil, just bean paste. As for the ambience, the place is pretty run down with chipped plates and bowls, dirty floor (I was the first one in that day). Don't want to talk about the rude service....
Edmund Xia
Nice place! The food were really good and we all enjoyed the seafoods. The services as nice as well. Definitely recommended to go for a meal!
Lollipop
try some special food from this shop, they r all amazingly tasty, the roasted duck is one of my favourite, n also they cooked the seafood like lobster, pretty professional, just right on time, the meat is not too tough, still keep the fresh original flavour !!!!

Everything was flavourful , good customer service, quick and efficient. Highly recommend Boiled Choysum with wheat and stir fried green beans.

I eat the dinner special here 3-4 times a month - my go to dish is the ma po tofu. Occasionally I'll get their famous hotpot beef and hot pot fish. Food and service is consistent and the prices are very reasonable.
Adrian
Food was amazing. Had the hot pot fish and fried rice and they were delicious and nicely presented. The waiters were professional and their service was great.

As a Sichuan food-lover, I finally found the place which best suits my stomach. No word could express my feelings when I tasted the dishes. Every time when I think about Sichuan food, the dishes were always came to my mind after I came back from Canberra. However, a new branch restaurant has been set up, and the dishes in the new branch restaurant tastes as impressive as in Canberra store.
Fooodisluxury
we tried the dry hot pot. it was very spicy but with the coke, it was very very apetizing! We also had the dumplings with sichuan chilli sauce and it was so good!

i visited my friend last week and this is a best shop i had dinner in in Canberra. The spicy mixed pot is very good with lots of selections. wish to go back there some other time.

I like to eat spicy food, and I think it is a good place for me. I think the hot pot beef is very delicious. Meanwhile, I think this restaurant need more tables, as I do not want to wait.
So, I think people should book the seats at first.

i really love it,We ordered pickled beef tendon with millet pepper, fish fillet hot pot, stir fried asparagus lettuce with sliced pork and stone pot braised beef brisket.

The stir fried asparagus lettuce (celtuce) with thinly sliced pork was a refreshingly non-spicy, non-oily counterpoint to the fish hot pot and was a perfect addition to our meal. This rated a 4.5.
The beef brisket dish was well made, but I
read more

I love Redchillis and I have read some of the bad reviews and it is hard to belive given that I have visited this restaurant on more than 4 ocassions and not once have I had a bad experience. So I truly recommend it to everyone. The food quality and taste are amazing and they have never dissapointed. I personally recommend the hot pot beef , strong recommend for spicy lover~

This was an excellent meal in a what has been a wonderful gastronomic tour of Canberra.
A busy, bustling restaurant with modern classic Chinese decor complete with fish pond, well dressed staff and great tasting food.
We ordered pickled beef tendon with millet pepper, fish fillet hot pot, stir fried asparagus lettuce with sliced pork and stone pot braised beef brisket.
The pickled beef tendon was the first dish we received and was excellent, with a refreshing vinegary taste combined with the heat of red chillis. This was a great start to the meal and rated a 4.5
The hot pot fish was cooked perfectly and had the distinct chilli oil heaviness of Sichuan food. The sliced wombok complemented the fish well. This dish rated a 4.5.
The stir fried asparagus lettuce (celtuce) with thinly sliced pork was a refreshingly non-spicy, non-oily counterpoint to the fish hot pot and was a perfect addition to our meal. This rated a 4.5.
The beef brisket dish was well made, but I found the flavour somewhat one-dimensional. In my view, the aniseed flavour was a little too dominant and didn't allow for the bamboo shoots to add much to the dish. This may be personal preference since I am not familiar with this dish. It rated a 3.5.
It is really a good place to eat Chinese food, really delicious; the environment just like a traditional Chinese restaurant.one thing is that you should put more tables in your restaurant, I don't want to wait everyone !

Props to the service, and the BIG smiles brought along. The food speaks for itself, so if you haven't had a bite of REAL Chinese food, this is the place to be.
Jeffery
Good food and service.
Tea smoked duck is so nice although it is not boneless. Tea smoked duck seems like one of the chief's sepecial dishes in the old menu. I hope more people try this lovely food.

The foods was amazing here, we ordered Ma Po Toufu, special fish and asparagus lettuce, all dishes were so good! Have to try, best recommended
Sam Zhang
Was quite a nice place and still has the Sichuan flavor to it. Great place to eat, especially dinner! Overall this place is must try and customer service was great

Really a nice restaurant for enjoying chinese cuisine. The food there is delicious and spicy and is definitely the authentic sichuan style cuisine.I like the lamb and the hot pot fish very much, it is absolutely the best choice if you like chinse food.

Great place to go if you like Chinese food, especially spicy food! Really fast service and fast response to your request! Always packed with people, so you'd better make a reservation before you go there.

Delicious! If u like hot and spicy, good try.
Kung Pao Chicken is my favorite. Spring rolls is crispy and sour and sweet sauce has a little spicy.

Tried on the 2nd of Feb 2017. didn't know they have a Canberra shop before. opposite to the melbourne building. I've tried their other shops in Sydney, and this shop do the same thing. Not much difference to sydney branches, but surprisingly to have one in Canberra.

saw they sell bento boxes at lunch time, which is a thing not doing in Sydney.

If you love or want to try some traditional Chinese dishes, it should be the best choice in Canberra. I really love the Chef's Special Fish with dry chilli, amazing appearance, spicy enough, and remarkably delicious.

Had a really great supper here with my friends!

You know when Chinese new year comes, we Chinese students studying in Australia always want to find someplace where we can enjoy authentic Chinese dishes. A friend of mine who has lived here for years recommended this restaurant to us so we went here for dinner yesterday. We ordered shrimp dumpling, hot pot fish, Kung Pao Chicken, asparagus……and I have to say, I had never tasted such authentic and delicious chinese food since I came to Australia.——That's what real chinese cuisine should be like and some of them even tastes better than what I ate in China.

If you guys want to taste real authentic chinese dishes, just come and have a try.
Jeanette
Tried this out with friends last week. It was so GOOD - the food and the services!!! Would definitely come back. Spicy chicken dices with dried chilies is a MUST TRY.
Yvonne

Make reservation before you go this restaurant if you don't like waiting a long time when you hungry ! It's very popular! Very nice people and very delicious food! My best favourite food is dry hotpot, it's amazing!

It’s always packed with people who look like they know what they’re choosing and it’s got great energy. Feels like you could really be in Sichuan Provence. When the Canberra Food Bloggers had a night out there (a little while back) they were generous and keen to please. I liked that!
Ian
Always busy and fast service. A great range of dishes to choose. The Chef special fillet and deep fried chicken was awesome. A nice staff recommend some popular dishes to us and tell us they have 10 chains throughout Australia. Overall we have a enjoyable night in Red Chilli.

A very popular place for spicy Sichuan food and hot pot. The flavour is good but not as good as before. The speed of service is very fast.

Really not a fan of chilli but after reluctantly followed friends to lunch. Now I am converted. Chilli flavours were subtle not unmanageable. Well flavoured and balanced.

Expensive and very average. We ordered fried rice which had little flavour, chicken with nuts and some other weird herb that made the dish very hard to eat then we ordered a expensive fish dish over 33 dollars and it came very late and had no flavour l. Thesis a very expensive place which lacks flavour

July 2016: Recently headed back after a long time away and the food here has gone way downhill. Used to be super flavourful, now the mapo tofu seems to just be tofu in chilli oil. No Sichuan peppercorns in sight. Bland and heavy. Eggplant stirfry just tasted like sugar, again drowned in a poor excuse for chilli oil, and the dumplings were served with a side bowl of straight soy sauce. As something of a dumpling connoisseur, even in the cheapest all you can eat joints I have never been given soy sauce as a dumpling "dipping sauce". Very weird, and very disappointing when you turn up expecting a great meal. Gave it 1.5 for the fact that the dumplings themselves weren't inedible. Won't be back again.

From 2015: The boyfriend and I come here heaps, whether it's for a quick lunch or a special occasion. Their ma po tofu is the best I've had anywhere; a smoky blend of spices, good levels of black beans, and the perfect balance of Sichuan peppercorn and chilli make this simple dish something to remember, as opposed to the satisfactory but lacklustre "tofu in hot sauce" that's trotted out as ma po elsewhere. Their chili clams are also highly recommended, along with their dumplings, their eggplant and prawn hotpot... Ok, I may as well say it: I've never had a bad dish here. Service can be a bit patchy at dinner when it's packed out, but try going at lunch where you'll get friendly, pretty fast service. That said, even if the service were terrible, the food's worth suffering for...

I'm going back for more.... Walked past this restaurant a few weeks ago and casually glanced at the menu in the window. Impressed with the choice of hot dishes, so 2 weeks later made a booking. Upon entering, I was shown to my table and provided with a glass of water with a slice of lemon along with a very thick menu. I liked the idea of being able to view photo's of the dishes, but with so many choices, it took some time to make a decision. I started with the Won Tons in hot chilli soup and I'll tell you what - next time, I am ordering 2 serves. They were fantastic! For mains, I settled on the stir fry beef with black pepper and capsicum. This was absolutely delicious. The food was servered quickly and lived up to it's description. I can't wait to go back for more.

The Pork & Leek dish actually came out as Bacon & Leak.
The duck pancakes were really not duck pancakes.
The lemon chicken had far too much batter.
All sauces on all the dishes coagulated and were sickeningly heavy.
We had to ask for serving spoons, ask repeatedly for chili/soy sauce, and for dirty dishes to be cleared away.
Honestly, so much better around in Canberra.

Spicy and delicious. Been here heaps of times. The chicken in chilli (the whole plate of dried fried chillies) is just unreal. Popcorn chicken in a hot salty peppery dry delight of a dish. King po chicken, the dried beef entrée (can't remember the name exactly) are other highlights. Other Szechuan favourites are also good. Just slips in behind spicy ginger as my fave Canberra Szechuan.

No service at all. A friend and I had been wanting to try this place for ages. Finally tonight was the night. Good Friday, place was busy. Sat down with our bottle of wine waiting for someone to come give us a menu, some glasses, some water etc. There's about 5 waitresses standing waiting for who knows what, maybe to be told what to do because they certainly weren't taking initiative ie new people maybe they want a menu. So I walked up and asked for a menu, she gave me one, I said I want two please. There was a communication problem. We're spending about ten minutes looking at what to order and waiting, yet no one had come to our table. After some more waiting and once making eye contact with one of the waitress and still nothing. So we voted with our feet and walked out the door, passed the door usher guy who didn't ask why we had left without ordering or anything like that. Oh no nothing at all. The funniest end to the evening was that as soon as we left he offered our seat to a couple of people who were waiting for a table. ha! at least they had menus on the table. I won't be going back and same with my friend. tis a shame.

A wonderful experience! We had the hot chilli wontons and the fish Sichuan hot pot with a bottle of house Riesling. Everything was delicious. The hot pot was huge and super tasty. We only got through half, so we took the rest home. Can't wait to see what it is like a day later. We had taken a bottle of wine as it was BYO, but the waitress advised us there was a $10 corkage so we thanked her and chose a lovely Riesling from the wine list. The whole meal was delightful and the bill was $70 (including the bottle of wine). Great value! Will definitely go back and want to take friends.
Michael Sturgess
Food was great but most of the staff can't understand English & the female staff need to act like they want to be there,
Oh the funniest thing was we only ate half our rice & when the waiter cleaned our table they just took it out the back & toped it up & reused it I saw this with my own eyes I was sitting at the back near fish tanks & had a clear view.

Very poor service. I went to this place for lunch and it was good, so I went back with my wife for dinner the same night. What a difference a few hours made! We got to our table and ordered relatively promptly, then sat for 45 minutes waiting for our first course... We watched dish after dish come out of the kitchen, but nothing came our way. Given that we ordered steamed dumplings for the first course, I really think 45 minutes was excessive.

We walked out at the point when other people who had been seated 20 minutes after us started getting their main courses. While we walked past many staff members on the way out, not one of them wanted to find out what the problem was. In fact they did their best not to make any eye contact. It was very interesting to note how much better the service was in this place if you were of Asian decent...

Whatever the reason for that particular issue, I really wanted this place to be good (as I love Sichuan food). However I will never be going back. I have mentioned my experience to many other people who were interested in going to this restaurant, and they too will be giving it a miss.

I loved it! The decor was amazingly beautiful, the staff where lovely and the food was so tasty! Amazing flavours i'd recommend giving it a go

I enjoyed my meal yesterday, was pretty tasty and spicy!

Waiter and waitresses are polite and prompt.

Food came out very quick too, 4 courses came out with in 25min of ordering..

Definitely recommended..

Not bad. It was a busyy day for the restaurant as it was mooncake festival. We came with a group of 10. They were really busy and gave us a small table. But they were quite accommodating as we requested for a larger table when another table vacated after about 15 minutes., The chinese tea was too diluted, so they were quite stingy with that. We found the food pretty good but they were more suited for people who are used to the chilli oil flavour. Almost all the dishes we ordered were drenched in chilli oil. But compared to spicy ginger restaurant across the road , I prefer this place. Some food was a hit, such as a chicken chilli oil and fish chili oil dish, but some food was pretty small in serving size such as the hot rock salted chilli chicken dish which came in a handful of little chicken with bigger portion of dried chilli accompanying it.
Oh Glorious One
Don't Bother!!!. Don't bother with this restaurant. Here's why.

Friday night, 6pm, and the place is full with a queue for tables. This was what made Hubby and me (with our 1yo in tow) decide to join the queue to wait for a table. We usually pick places to eat based on the number of people inside the restaurant, so we took a number and waited patiently for our seats. 45 minutes later, with numerous other people who arrived after us being ushered through before us, we were finally shown to our table in a private room, which we shared with 4 other diners (2 couples).

The table sharing was fine - we were hungry and by this point, really just wanted to eat and go back to the hotel to put our son to bed. Having already perused the menu, we had decided on the dishes we wanted. We had to wait until the other diners were seated before we could order. The other diners weren't quite ready to order, so the waitress went away. And didn't come back.

We brought a bottle of wine with us, and asked another waitress what the cost of corkage was. The reply was "$15 per bottle". I thought I heard wrong, so I asked her to repeat it. The reply was "Yes, $15 per bottle, but if you drink a lot, then I discount you to $10 per bottle". Clearly, she had mistaken Hubby and I to be 1) alcoholics and 2) irresponsible parents who would drink a lot whilst dining with a 1yo. Needless to say, we drank tap water, which thankfully was free.

After waiting another 10 minutes, we were finally allowed to order food, as did the other diners. One of other diners ordered a Coke, and the waitress brought him a can of Coke and a straw. No glass. He didn't think much of the arrangement, but opened the can and took a sip from the can, leaving the straw on the table. The same waitress came back with our tap water, saw the Coke drinker was drinking out of the can, and told him that he shouldn't drink the Coke straight from the can and he should use the straw to drink the Coke. Stunned silence from all of us in the private room, before the Coke drinker asked if he had done something wrong. Apparently, yes, he was drinking his beverage incorrectly, according to the waitress.

Just after we placed our orders, a bossy waitress dragged EVERY waitstaff into our room to point out that there were 3 separate orders in the room - Coke drinker and his wife (Bill 1), the other couple (Bill 2), and us (Bill 3). The bossy waitress explained this to all the waitstaff, individually, in great detail, over and over again. When the food was served, none of the waitstaff remembered who had ordered what.

The only redeeming feature was the food - it was OK, but really nothing to write home about, and definitely not value for money.

All in all, the staff was hopeless bordering on rude, the whole place lacked ambience, and if this restaurant thinks it can charge $15 corkage per bottle of BYO wine, then the owners must be dreaming. Seriously, there are better places to eat in Canberra. Give this one a miss.
Michele Walton
Order carefully (one chilli rated dishes only) and everyone will still enjoy a variety of flavours and textures.
Eat Like Ushi
Closing in at #20 on the Canberra Times top 20 for 2013 came Red Chilli Sichuan. I haven't had a lot of Sichuan food in the past, the closest probably being Mao's in Fitzroy, which has delicious food. The top 20 list also featured Malamay which was skipped due to a higher price than preferred on this evening (and I recently found out that Malamay isn't particularly Sichuanese at all...). There's a lot of red about the restaurant - the red sign, the red lanterns, the red seat cushions, and of course the red chilli. - Mapo Tofu - tofu, pork mince, hot Sichuan sauce. Delicious fragrant and excellent; - Lamb Ribs with Cumin - rich cumin flavours encrusting tender meat; - Salt and Pepper Fried Fish - quite salty fish which was nice, but surprisingly the addition of fried corn kernels was a wonder. Multiple topups of rice are necessary for completeness and to handle some of the numbing heat. I'll certainly be going back. There's a lot of good looking dishes on the menu here. They have live l

This was the first dish to arrive and the best dish by far. The beans were cooked nicely and the pork mince was well seasoned.

We were looking to eat something different and to utilise the Entertainment book while also dining a little later in the city so I could get some shopping done. We booked an 8:30pm table for four at the Red Chilli Sichuan restaurant when it satisfied all of our criteria. Entree~ Boiled bun stuffed with juicy pork (4 per serve $8.00) – there was no soup inside and all the juices had overflowed onto the cabbage leaf, it was still ok but not worth the money. Mains~ Salt and pepper pork ribs ($18.60) – I have ordered this dish from a lot of places and when I took a bite, I did not expect this to be as spicy as it was and I had to have it with a lot of rice. Stir fried scallops with mixed vegetables ($24.00) – very light but flavoursome and I was surprised to see black fungus in the mix. The vegetables were cooked very well and they weren’t skimpy with the amount of scallops. Stir fried green beans with pork mince ($14.50) – I thought this dish was too
