Review Tu Do Vietnamese Restaurant - Canberra

James Bryan
I love this place. But my vegetarian girlfriend doesn't like the options. Would be great if they changed the menu so I could eat here more often. The mint beef is my favourite highly recommend. They also have mint chicken which is also good.

Have been here number of times over the years! The quality of the food is not bad and fairly consistent. The pho broth was pretty nice but serving portions could have been improved and didn’t have as many types of ingredients compared to others. The pork chop was nice but a little fry. Overall a good option for Vietnamese in cbd area.

Tu Do serves disappointing pho and features mediocre service at best. The pho lacks the distinct traditional herbs used in a pho broth. This makes the pho taste like generic beef stock. The portion size is average at best. The service was inattentive despite being a less than busy evening meal time. The servers were often scrolling through their phone while multiple customers were trying to get their attention.

Very authentic vietnamese food...look at the pan fried chicken wings, delicious. And the rice noodles soup, the rice noodles are so chewy, the texture is great. Very nice meal. Will definitely go again if coming to Canberra.

After 3 years being overseas our first stop for takeaway was to return to the TuDo Restaurant in O’Connor. The wonderful cooking smells as you walked in the restaurant was so good. We ordered big on the TuDo meals, our favourites we discussed every time we thought of Vietnamese Food. Tu Do didn’t disappoint. We loved our chicken wings, veg spring rolls, chilli chicken and lemon grass, satay chicken and stir fry veg. Great food. We travel all the way from Jerrabomberra to enjoy their food. They don’t disappoint 😊

I was very disappointed. The dishes ordered were dry and flavourless. The Vietnamese spring rolls were good though, everything else was very ordinary.

Went there for the pho recently. Great broth, great tasting. Grossly insufficient noodles - like about half what a normal portion would be. Ok beef. Decent price ($13/13.50 for a bowl). But i'd much rather pay a little more for a complete meal.

One employee serving the whole floor, had to wait a long time for everything, including just to get some water. Food was very disappointing, I don't even know what else to say, just not worth even bothering.

Food is delicious, staffs are friendly, restaurant is in a good area with many parking slots. Ngon, thân thiệt, và nhà hàng ở vị trí tốt, có nhiều chỗ đậu xe.

Small, busy & tasty.
Just what I needed, with fast no fuss service our food arrived promptly and it was delicious. I had a pho which was the best I've had in Canberra after leaving Melbourne one year ago.

I and my family (of 5) are regular customers of this place. We enjoy Pho there. Tonight, I went there alone for dinner. There was 3 empty tables of 2, I was seated at the one next to the exit. I requested to move to the other but refused so I left to Pho Can Tho in Belconen.
Appauling! Where is customer service??? You have lost me and family as customers. We won be back again.

Simple decor, ok service but amazing pho. I think this pho is one of the best I've had in Canberra. The other food is ok so I'll stick with the pho when I return.

I only managed to try the popular Vietnamese restaurant, Tu Do, in O’Connor very recently to the chagrin of my foodie friends. Located at the O’Connor shops, Tu Do was not hard to find and filled with diners. The restaurant was a lot more modern than expected – I loved the dark timber floorboards. It took a few minutes to get some service as there was only one person working the floor. The menu had Vietnamese staples such as pho (starting from $12), bun cha, and com tam, as well as other items more common on a Chinese menu such as satay, sweet and sour, and black bean dishes. I noticed a garlic rice option which I haven’t really seen anywhere else besides Filipino restaurants. I’ve been told that the fried chicken wings were a must-eat so I made sure to order it.

Fresh Rice Rolls (4 for $8) with Hoisin Sauce are also generous but also filled with a lot of rice noodles. Plates of stir fried dishes for $13 (for vegetarian) up $18 (for seafood), offer a good opportunity to share a few options in a group. Peppercorn Beef $15. One dish with rice ($2.50 per person) can be shared between two people but there is enough for four people to share two dishes.

Tu Do is Canberra's oldest Vietnamese restaurant and may well be the best. It's a small BYO shopfront in the O'Connor shops in Canberra's inner north. The food is just fantastic - varied dishes, fresh, authentic food matched with good service. There is a bottle shop in the shopping centre but it closes early so best to take drinks to accompany your meal with you. I will definitely eat at Tu Do again.

Sorry to say, the service received was very average. The food was crummy, and didn't come close to other small Vietnamese restaurants canberra has to offer (for better prices too). Will not be returning and would not recommend.

We only come here for Pho as we tried other dishes, but were not impressed, with the exception of the pan fried chicken wings, which are crispy and rightly seasoned accompanied by a fish sauce and chilli sauce mixture as dipping sauce. The Pho for us is excellent with high quality beef and tasty beef balls. However, quite frankly we are not experienced Pho eaters so can't really compare with many others, but compared to one or two others, this Pho is far better.

Unfortunately very overrated, which is a big disappointment as Canberra is crying out for more good Vietnamese. The food is often over seasoned, over cooked and not congruent with the menu description. If you must go, skip the traditional Vietnamese dishes which are a far cry from authentic and stay in the vicinity of the peanut beef and satay chicken which offer some relief amongst an underwhelming selection.

So average. The food was eh, the spring rolls were seriously disappointing, didn't taste fresh at all. I had a Hot and Sour soup which was super sweet. And the only waitress was rude which is always a bummer. I won't bother again, Dickson is so close.

I was really looking forward to eating here as I've heard that their Pho was the best in Canberra...and boy I was let down! For $12, the bowl was all soup and there were hardly any meat or noodles. Their crispy skin chicken was over cooked and so dry...their $16 Pork chop was over cooked and was tiny too, not to mention grossly overpriced! I will not go back...go to Bistro Nguyen's instead.

Had lunch here today with my family for the first time and fair to say WOW the pho was amazing, the broth mixed with the tender beef was just Devine!!! Quick service mixed with friendly staff made it turn into a great lunch. Would go back for sure.

Tu Do is a little O'Connor delight. The food is always fresh and flavoursome and priced reasonably. The Pho is light and refreshing and I find them to be very generous with the meat, it's also always very lean! The restaurant tends to be pretty packed most of the time and is fairly squishy.. there also tends to be a screaming kid, so not recommended if you're after an interrupted chat.

We always order pho when we get here. The broth is ok. A bit light for my liking. The beef is good but doesn't seem to be enough serving on the bow though.

Absolutely brilliant pho! I had the rare beef, my sister had the chicken. Light, delicious and hearty all at the same time. We'll be back with friends!

3 of us went there for lunch a few days ago. It was a cold day and we wanted a heart warming pho. When we arrived the only guy at front of house was at the counter playing with his phone while we waited for a table. We laughed at this and I think he saw the "funny" side of this and sheepishly came towards us. He was friendly anyway so all's cool. The pho's arrived pretty quickly and were very satisfying. Being new in Canberra however, we naturally compared them with the stuff we had in Melbourne (Footscray, Springvale and Box Hill). They weren't bad but I guess we were nostalgic or biased. I felt the broth was a bit light on and there was more than a hint of MSG. The beef was also overcooked but only a little. Overall however the pho's were good and we were satisfied - so all's good. Will I return... yes.

Tu DONT!!. Tu DO’s at O’Connor shops should consider renaming themselves Tu DONTs! Seriously, this has got to be one of the worst meals I have EVER had in my entire life. My husband and I decided to try this place after reading a couple of positive reviews (undoubtedly they either wrote these themselves or paid their friends to write them). Anyway, we ordered a so-called ‘seafood’ noodle soup. We had both just returned from a trip to Vietnam where we enjoyed the popular soup called Pho, full of fresh flavours and fresh seafood. The same could certainly not be said for what was served up here – it tasted of what I imagine dirty dishwashing water would taste like or even a dirty sock. It was bland instant chicken stock with no additional flavouring and the ‘seafood’ consisted of simulated, or fake, squid, scallops and seafood extender (supposed to be crab, but actually it’s made from inexpensive fish pounded into a thick paste then shaped and cooked – ew!). The only fresh things about this were the bean sprouts and basil (I guess they can’t fake those, otherwise they certainly would have), but they didn’t even provide mint or other greens, which you would typically expect to be served with an authentic Vietnamese soup. Even though this bowl of muck was only $12, it’s still not unreasonable to expect some fresh seafood – hell, I would have been happy if I’d seen one prawn! It was so abysmal we both took only one mouthful each and decided to leave. Not only was the food sub-standard, but of course, when we complained and pointed to our two full bowls remaining at the table, we were still charged the full amount without even so much as an apology from the insolent waitress – it was almost like she’s had to do this many times before. Canberra is too small of a place to make bad food, treat your customers poorly and expect to get away with it. Word gets around quickly!

Great Vietnamese restaurant. Amazing food, great service and friendly staff!
A must if you enjoy great Vietnamese food.

Perfect Vietnamese. You can't go wrong with this Canberra institution. Whether you want a steaming bowl of Pho, some peanut beef or, as we discovered last time, the crispy goodness that is their fried, stuffed chicken wings, you can get it all at Tu Do and you won't have to spend much either. Plus service is super speedy. Love it for a quick weeknight catch up with a friend or two rather than a big group but I'm sure it could do both.

BEST IN CBR ! The only place to go for Pho. Have spent a lot of time in vietnam and this is the best Vietnamese food in CBR. Simple dining and great prices. It's a must!!!

Quick and simple. But it was just lacking some of the finer touches. We had to ask for water, napkins, etc.
Food was good but overall experience was average.

Unhelpful and rude. Very unhelpful for people with special eating requirements. Instead of helping for a simple request (which would have ensured repeat business) they were rude, presumptive on what I should and shouldnt be eating (I manage my medical condition and I clearly know exactly what I should and should not be eating) and argumentitive, even though I politely and clearly outlined what I needed repeatedly. DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT IF YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL FOOD REQUESTS. In the end the food was not very good anyhow and I will not be going back. Very poor customer service and attitude.

Decent food, decent cost. A great little Vietnamese restaurant is found in Tu Do. Food that is fresh and flavoursome, generous portions and reasonably priced. My only comment is that some of the dishes lack inspiration, while others are loaded with flavour - an imbalance that unfortunately lessens the impact of the menu overall. Certainly not authentic however, more like a fusion with Western cuisine and tastes.

The rare beef pho here is by far the best pho I have eaten in Australia. The dish is simple, tasty and filling. The atmosphere is warm and cosy, the staff friendly. And of course, the pho (if I remember) is under $15. The best part is if you don't like Asian food that makes you feel sluggish, pho is the way to go. If you're not up for pho I would also recommend the sizzling seafood - it is also delicious.

Ordered the Satay lamb and lemon chicken. The satay lamb was amazing-never had better. Unfortunately the lemon chicken wasn't boneless and the meat was gristly and not very tasty. Next time will order the bone less chicken!

Not for vegetarians or those seeking authentic cuisine. The food here needs some real passion and interest injected into it.
This was so disappointing. I think I would have done better with the hotel room service which I had decided not to take a risk on.
1. I asked for broccoli with my green curry, being keen for greens after 48 hours of plane and party food, however there was no broccoli to be seen in my takeaway once back at the hotel.
2. I appreciate that the vegetables in green curries are typically ‘crisp’ but slightly under- cooked celery and green capsicum do not a delicious green curry make. Both need to be well cooked in any hot food. The Chinese style cabbage and cauliflower though were perfectly done.
3. The rice paper rolls were very bland with tofu--so many ways to add flavour to this!--and boiled vermicelli noodles were sadly not saved by a lackluster dipping sauce and these ended up in the bin.
4. The green ‘curry’ had no heat and as such was not a curry sauce, but tasted simply like coconut milk. There was none of the heat and flavour of a Viet curry at all.
Disappointing and I caught a cab there and back as it was dark, so an expensive mistake.

Wonderful pho. Will be back again... and again!

Disappointing or at best average. My colleagues suggested Tu Do time and time again and claimed it was the best in Canberra. My husband and I visited last night and the food was disappointingly average. Our order: Vietnamese spring rolls, honey prawns, roast chicken with plum sauce and steamed rice. The prawns were quite large, but they were overcooked (tough to bite through) and were over-battered. The roast chicken was more bone and gristle than meat. A shame, because the plum sauce it came with had a lovely flavour. Finally, the spring rolls were so greasy that they left a film on our lips. They didn't have much filling compared to the amount of wrap, either. For the amount of hype this restaurant gets, I expected far more. We won't be returning to this restaurant.

Great Food. The food was fresh, fast, tasty and cheap. Staff were friendly.

Casual. Went on a Wednesday evening with a booking. The place was quite full, and had a pretty casual atmosphere. Service was fast and prompt. The food was decent and prices reasonable. I ordered a duck noodle soup type dish - the duck lacked flavour unfortunately. My companions had various other noodle dishes which were good. Desserts were a little confusing - I ordered a 'Caramel tart' which turned out to be more like a creme caramel - but it tasted fine

Arguably the best vietnamese restaurant in Canberra. We took our friends from Vietnam there and they said it was very authentic. Quite small, so book if you want a table

In the quiet shopping complex of O’conner, Tu Do looks like a very interesting place to eat from the outside. The atmosphere inside is very friendly, small tables with some sauces, chopsticks, spoons and

I spent a Friday in Sydney for work a few weeks ago and when I arrived back in Canberra after a 12 hour return trip, I was tired and craving comfort food. My idea of ‘comfort food’ changes regularly – it could be ice-cream on one day and a big bowl of soup the other. On that Friday evening, I craved the latter and A and I made a beeline for an easy, casual dinner at Tu Do in O’Connor. Tu Do is a Vietnamese eatery that is seen as a Canberra institution. It’s a casual eatery that focuses on simple, flavoursome Vietnamese food. To start with, we ordered Vietnamese rice paper rolls ($8), with our choice of prawn filling. Our four rolls were fast to arrive and were full of fresh ingredients. I ordered the special roast duck with egg noodle soup ($13), and requested it dry. I love dry soups as I can add as much or as little of the soup to my dish. My serving of duck was very generous and there was a lot of meat on the bone. The soup itsel
