Review Red Brick Espresso - Canberra

George Nattey
Shhhh... don't tell anyone about this gem. Great coffee, and even better Bacon & Egg rolls, all at a good price. It can get a bit busy as the word is out about the friendly staff, great coffee and atmosphere. You can sit outside (if you dare in winter) all hours as a great COVID safety measure as the tables/chairs are well spaced. Enjoy. If this was useful, please like this review. Thanks.

So friendly, here I feel part of a family. Quick, smart, the youngsters bring a well prepared and tasty coffee with a cheery smile to us codger cyclists.. Sometimes it's more than a good coffee. Pastries are good too

My favourite coffee roaster in Canberra! The 'Rogue Coffee' blend is a must try for espresso drinkers.

Cute little coffee shop with a small but decent menu of food. Quite a few tables to sit out the front for a casual quick breaky. Quick service and meals well priced. Yummy baked good inside too. Able to make vegan some of the options. Mushroom toast with ago instead of egg was quite good

I've always enjoyed walking my dog from Curtin Oval down to Red Brick. Always happy with the food and coffee!

I had their bacon and egg roll for lunch and it was simply magic. The egg was perfectly cooked, the bacon spot on and the roll ever so fresh and light. An amazing yet simple delight! Thankyou guys!

Good -Coffee is not bad. -Friendly staff. -Nice simple meal. Bad -Too many flys inside of shop.

Good for brekkies, bu the menu is limited. Inside the restaurant is well appointed, outside leaves much to be desired. See photo. Noise levels is comfortable. Service is promp.

Go for the coffee, stay for the coffee. The coffee is really good. The menu feels like an after thought but it holds its own against the roasted beans. The staff are some of the friendliest around and the atmosphere is happy and light. They need new outdoor furniture (someone tell me if they get it) because the the small seats can’t hold a foodie’s bum. The pastries are delicious. Did I mention good coffee?

Rang a huge order through which they succeeded in filling on time. The coffee was great and I'm fussy! The taste was strong (is there any other way to have it) and my work colleagues were much nicer and happier to me after I returned with the trays. This was naturally nothing to do with my own 'then' caffeine-d attitude. I'll be back Red Brick. What stopped you getting a 5 is that you all watched me walk to my car (in heels) and on a windy blustery day with 11 coffees when it would've taken 1 min to give me a hand.the cafe wasn't busy when I left either 😉
Popped into RBE on the way home from the markets for a late breakfast. Managed to find a park as it's essentially located on a roundabout. Walked in the door and it immediately felt unwelcoming. There is the main desk where coffee and apparently food is made, and then off to the side in what you would expect to be the kitchen is another coffee bar that doesn't seem to have anything to do with the cafe... despite being inside it.

Order:

Avocado on toast for her
House made baked beans for me
Extra - an egg each and 1 serve of bacon (for a staggering $12!)

All up with a coffee each, a touch under $50 which is a bit rich for my blood.

Food:

It had to be sourdough didn't it? The bacon serve was small given the price and you don't get a choice of how you get your eggs cooked. It's fried and runny. Good thing we are ok with that. Edit: egg on one was hard. Other was runny.

The pesto Avo was ok. But it was stacked high on unstable sourdough toast which is just stupid. One note - food is completely unseasoned with no salt and pepper on the table - a bit presumptuous of the 'chef'.

The baked beans were good. Tasty and served with Persian feta - although a wedge of lemon wouldn't go astray to cut through the richness. But seriously - raw sage on baked beans? WTH!

Coffee:

Don't bother. Nothing special. Lukewarm and overpriced.

Service and ambience:

This is what really let RBE down. Staff looking down their nose at you. This isn't Braddon, so drop the attitude. The place has many hard corners and surfaces which makes it hard to relax; and for feck sake, turn down the bloody music!

Note for the wait staff - when your cleaning down the tables and return to the open kitchen to wash up, don't drop everything into the sink so loudly people jump.

Overall:

Food - 6/10
Coffee - 2/10
Service - 0/10 (non existent)

Eftpos available. No bookings

TL;DR?

Don't bother. It's crap. At least notuntil they get better staff.
Authenticity
Being a coffee snob, the place got my commitment to get up early and try. The coffee claimed to be house roasted, taste okay with no aroma or after taste in the palette. Another disappointment with the hype from the local community article. However, I enjoyed the ambient where the locals gathered and green lawn to make watching sunrise with this coffee a pleasant experience.

Great coffee and service, delicious pastries and pretty interior. I've been to Red Brick numerous times now and it's the little things - like the good quality magazines, native floral arrangements and staff remembering your name - that will keep me coming back.
Hungryhungry
Pretentious, rude and bland. Coffee was lukewarm, food lacked imagination and the staff looked as bored as the four day old flowers. Glad I went, sad I won't get that hour back. A complete waste of a meal out.
Adventures In Winterland
Not being a coffee drinker, Red Brick wasn’t too high on my foodie list, but a friend invited me there for a catch up and so off I went. The brunch menu is actually quite good, with a few breakfasty options and a few lunchy options. I chose a classic fried egg and bacon roll ($10.90), mostly because it was served with kewpie mayonnaise! We sat inside, admiring the texta-art scene drawn on the wall, showing the local shops. I also drooled a bit over the danishes and pastries at the counter, but decided to be good. This time. The roll came out fairly quickly, and I was very happy to see

Generally good coffee and great food! Also a nice place to socialise with more than enough space to hang out with any number of friends up to say 8. Highly recommended especially for introverts to have alone time since the Telstra Wi-Fi hotspot is within access so you can enjoy your money coffee whilst surfing the net :)

Negative points have been applied due to the card surcharges which is completely unnecessary especially with many cafes offering the same service for free. 30 cents is enough to encourage to go elsewhere for price sensitive customers. Also, it would be a good look for their business, especially with millennials if they had better social media presence or customer engagements i.e. replying to the below customers and addressing any constructive criticism.

I was prepared to be disappointed, as I had high expectations of Red Brick from excellent reviews. I wasn't.
I had a Reuben sandwich which was tasty as hell and a chai latte.
I have had take away coffee that was burnt, but not so badly as to ruin it, so hoping that's a one off. Other comments from people with me have been coffee-positive.

There were plenty of locals enjoying breakfast at Red Brick Espresso that weekend and it is clearly a much loved suburban brunch spot. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I must give kudos to kitchen staff when I realised the ‘kitchen’ consisted of a small bench behind the front counter with a small sink, oven and simple gadgets like a waffle maker and sandwich press.

I wanted to take my visiting friend somewhere local and awesome for brunch with good coffee and Red Brick Espresso had something that appealed to each of us. We were lucky enough to get a big spacious table inside and we excitedly browsed through the menu.

No service. Came here on recommendation, at first glance thought very funky. Unfortunately expresso was to thin, ordered a vegetarian bun, the bun tasted commercial baked Very disappointing.
No personal service. Has the bones for a great place, needs improving

Great coffee, love the lamb burger. The coffee here is always good - a lovely fragrant flavoursome coffee. I always enjoy the lamb burger with kewpie mayonnaise here although I'm not a fan of the pickled vegetables it's served with. Can I suggest they serve it with kim chi? It would go beautifully, and much tastier. I've had the tortillas which were a bit tasteless but I'll keep going back for the lamb

Cute little cafe! Very small menu, but food was ok. Coffee was really nice and actually I had 2, even that I usually drink only Campos. The service and baristas are great. Cafe have a nice homely feeling. Keep on posted on instagram.

Chilled, great coffee and service. Really enjoyed brunch here the other day, got to chat with the owner/manager (who seems to know everyone!) which added to the relaxed atmosphere. Food was good and the coffee was spot on, which might have something to do with the gigantic roasting machine in the back of the shop! definitely going back

Music so LOUD we left !. Guys, its about the customer not you!

Turn the music down and focus on service.

We left without ordering as it was not pleasant at all.

Amazing coffee

Most of the really excellent coffee is roasted in Melbourne, but luckily enough we also have some decent roasters in Canberra. One of these is Red Brick Espresso in the suburb of Curtin. The three of us discovered the café on a whim. We were dining out at a Braddon restaurant when we noticed that they served a brand of coffee we had never heard of before. That wasn’t going to fly. The following week we sought out Red Brick for an early breakfast and a brand new coffee.

Red Brick Expresso at the Curtain shops has great coffee and real style. Sunny seating inside and out, friendly service and a small selection of light lunches and baked items makes it a good suburban spot to catch up for a quick lunch of a coffee. Slow Cooked Beef Brisket Burger w bbq sauce & herbed sour cream on a soft brioche roll served w apple slaw $15.90

Ahh the joys of finding a new experience in Canberra! I got tipped off about Red Brick Espresso by more than one person, so despite the out of the way location I decided to make a special trip out to the 'burbs in search of a good caffeine fix and it was more than worth the effort. Red Brick Espresso stands out as you drive past the Curtin shops because of the hipster milk crates outside the cafe in a suburban shopping strip that is anything but hipster otherwise. Inside it's warm and bathed in sunlight. Thank god, considering the Arctic-like temperatures and the howling wind outside! It's a long narrow space; coffee machine and counter on one side, tables and benches on the opposite side and the coffee roaster and the "lab" on the far end. On a nice sunny day the outdoor tables are bound to be in very high demand. The decor is a little bit retro and a little bit arty with the graffiti, exposed red brick wall (get it?) and retro furniture and serving plates. The vibe was just right;

A very child and dog friendly as everyone had at least one of the two in the surrounding tables. Great to see local shops have a good cafe with great coffee that you don’t have to go to Fyshwick or Braddon for.
Corridor Kitchen
We stand at the counter for a while waiting to order, staff seem a little harried so we wait as they hand out the takeaways. We order coffee and seat ourselves in the unmistakeably Canberran, light-filled and cleverly renovated space, which, as we’re in the southside of Canberra, could’ve been anything in a past life- a house, a pharmacy, or a sex shop – all roads lead to rectangular brick structures. The guys behind the espresso machine look like they know what’s what – they roast their own coffee here, and are well and truly the third wave.
