Review Little Oink - Canberra

Neil Locker
We had brunch here this morning and loved this cafe. The cafe caters for many people and has lots of outdoor space, which is great during COVID. Their protocols are excellent. The young staff we met were all really nice and friendly and the food and coffee were served fairly fast. This cafe has a nice village atmosphere with lots of friendly people. It’s also very dog friendly too. The food and coffee are good and the prices are some of the best in Canberra Highly recommended 👍

Strong good coffee, medium to well roasted. Unremarkable suburban coffee shop with some nice pastries. Banoffee pie very good, but bit soggy so I'll drop rating to just "good." There is so much to explore around the Mt Painter area- a lot of bush walks and bike trails. This is a good place to stop afterwards & refuel.

Breakfast here was great and we loved the menu. We were served quite quickly and the food was delicious. Various breakfast options, although the portions were a little smaller than expected, but it was definitely more quality over quantity.

I had such a great experience at little oink. The food we ordered was so yummy the GET IN MY PORK BELLY - the WILD BOAR and the DREAM OF CALICORNICATION. Well presented and great tasting. All round, highly recommend little oink.

We love this little cafe. Great little kids play area to keep the littlies entertained whilst you have a coffee or enjoy a delish meal! Great vegan options also!

I have been to this little cafe several times over the past few years. It is certainly a convenient meeting point for walkers and runners, and those with a dog, as there is outdoor as well as indoor seating. The food and coffee is generally good. I feel the service is variable (especially over the last few months) and possibly related to not enough staff during busy periods. Terribly disappointed recently when a booking made the previous day was not recorded.

Had their chicken burger. It was really nice with wholesome ingredients and very filling. Definitely would come here again.

I've been meaning to try out Little Oink for a while and went today for some brunch - wasn't disappointed. The service was good, the food was served in a timely manner and it tasted awesome to boot (we had the fried chicken burger). Pricing is on par with most of the little cafes around town, though the portion size is a bit smaller than what I would normally expect for the price. Otherwise highly recommend!

I was sick after eating a veggie burger at Little Oink. Maybe the staff should pay more attention to health and hygiene than socialising with each other loudly. Throughout the entire hour I was there, the noise of laughter and chat from the kitchen was like nothing I have ever heard. It was also obvious that the burger had been cooked in seed oil, which I would have thought most people now know is not healthy at all. This is somewhat ironic when the whole vibe of the place is hipster and gluten free etc.

I really enjoyed the breakfast at Little Oink on Saturday. There was a good range of items on the menu and the food was thoughtfully presented. The decor was unique and the staff were friendly and helpful. I would recommend Little Oink to everyone.

Very disappointed with our experience here. The girl who served us was friendly, and advised of a few menu changes which presumably was because of the time of the year and their last day of business for a few days, so that was fine and appreciated. We ordered two coffees and one cold brew, and two serves of banana bread. The banana bread came out straight away, and the butter was rock hard and was unable to be spread even after sitting on the warm bread. The two coffees didn't come out until 15 mins after the bread was served. We then had to chase up the cold brew which was then served 5 minutes later with two scabby bits of orange skin. We felt sorry for the waitress as she was doing her best but they were obviously short staffed behind the counter and coffee machine. Disappointed with our experience given we are new to the suburb so we probably won't be back and would not recommend.

The most wonderful little shop, perfect service, people, food & coffee Plus on this glorious day! A tea pot cosie was won! A little amazing Xmas miracle

Unfortunately this place isn't as child friendly as it use to be. Still a little table and toys but cleaning products left on the kids table (I appreciate that they cleaned the toys). My pancakes were dry and rubbery and the coffee was weak. Sorry but won't be back for the food or coffee.

I've started having my business meetings here at my local cafe given the great outdoor seating, ready parking/bus at the door for my colleagues, and the good vibe to the place. At my latest meeting my interstate colleague happened to get there early and sent me a message saying "I'm at the Little Oink now (great choice!), no need to rush, the coffee and food is great here!" Thought you might like this feedback! Great to have you at our local shops since you have given the whole suburb a new vibrancy!

We have used this cafe from time to time and enjoyed the food. However, last time I walked in there the music was so loud I couldn't hear the waitress nor she, me. On commenting on the loudness of music, I was told that that was how it was there. I will not be bothering to return to this cafe. How does one have a conversation with a dining companion? By SMS?

Love the staff, the lovely waitress went out of her way to find me a table, on a busy Saturday morning.

We love this cafe - it is actually one of our favourite places to visit for an afternoon treat! Cute, unassuming and affordable. A great place to go with the kids - thanks Little Oink!

We went for a nice Saturday brunch but left with eating anything in the end. I ordered the pork belly and my partner ordered the pig farmers lunch. The waitress returned to say that the pork belly had run out, which was fine so I swapped to the pig farmers lunch also. The menu read that the pig farmers lunch had 'parfait, pigs in blankets, pickled veg and crusty bread'. What turned up at our table included not one of those items but what appeared to be a bunch of leftovers and odd sorts the kitchen needed to get rid off. This include a half of a rosti and some old bits of cold roast pumpkin. When we asked about the odd selection of bits on the plates the waitress was nice and went and checked with the chef. We were told they'd run out of the parfait etc but that he would make the pigs in blankets now. Was he too lazy to bother when we first ordered? bonjour. We thought about swapping to different menu items but by this stage i would have been picking the 3rd choice meal from the menu and gosh knows what we would have gotten. Very disappointing experience from a place that looked cute and fun.

Awesome breakfast, had some great coffee there as well. Good prices and the menu is great with a bit of humour. The staff are lovely. Only issue I wish we could go there more often.

Just visited the cafe for coffee and brunch with a friend. Loved everything about the cafe and the staffs. Especially the coffee was the best ever. Lovely ambience and very decently priced. Looking forward to take my husband and son soon. Definitely one of my fav cafe in Canberra

Lovely little spot in Cook - the food and service were excellent, although the scrambled eggs were a little peppery! It was a perfect spot for a sunny Sunday Brunch!

Great food, great atmosphere, friendly staff. A lovely place to go for a cuppa or breaky. Make sure you book!

What a friendly cafe! Breakfast was delicious - corn fritters among the best I've had! Beautiful and quirky touches made for a wonderful experience.

Great coffee, friendly staff and good food. The delivery of take away coffee and seated dining is within a decent time frame and not too pricey. It’s nice because there really isn’t too much else around this area. Happy chap

What a little gem! Great service, very cool menu, superb eats. Went with the “Get in my Pork Belly” and I have to say it was pretty much the best pork I’ve ever eaten- and I’ve cooked, eaten and served some A1 pork myself- but this little piggy wins all the way home. Looks can be deceiving too, the beautiful plating actually hides the true portion size and I was more than satisfied with the amount on the plate. After four years in Melbourne and recently returned to Canberra, this is my new local & i am very happy about that!

This place was so cute! Interior consists of cutie coloured dishes, chairs and plants that just makes you happy immediately🤩 Personally, I love these cosy brunch places where prices are affordable, tables a bit worn out and no marble walls but has a cute paintings instead. I feel like I could make this place my go to☺️

Had brekky here and it was okay....sat outside in the sun which is lovely on a nice day. Service was friendly and good, no complaints there at all. Decor is a little run down. Coffee was average but ok. All the meals that came out were fine. No major complaints just not much to really praise either....

I ordered the haloumi and corn frittatas and couldn't have been more disappointed! The food was dry and completely flavourless.. I would liken it to bits of corn in dry batter, with no evidence of the subtle salty cheesiness of haloumi that the wait staff promised was contained in the dish. Afterwords I felt ill and sincerely regretted eating this food, let alone being obligated pay $17 for the plate. I was left with the impression of extreme stinginess with desired ingredients by this business (i.e., haloumi and avocado, of which there was 4 tiny tiny pieces mixed in with the tomato). The dish was overpriced and stingy.. the waitstaff spent over 20 minutes to clear my dish and never checked my level of satisfaction. Even after I communicated my disappointment, no remedy was offered aside from "there was haloumi in the dish, and I will tell the chef". Too late. I definitely won't return to this establishment!

Great food, amazing coffee and the staff were lovely. Great way to start the day. I Will definitely come back again when I'm in Canberra. @littleoink #littleoink.

It’s open everyone day Monday – Friday 7am – 4pm and Saturday – Sunday 8am – 4pm and takes bookings (a good idea as it’s small and cozy) and has easy parking. I loved the friendly and flexible service…. ..the cute, relaxed, funky and casual decor.

Little Oink is part of the suburban shopping centre refurbishment that seems to be going on. Empty, desolate shopping centres are turned into little hipster havens. Kinda ironic given the suburban setting is not the natural habitat of the hipster. Little Oink follows this trend. It is adorably kitsch. Lots of little teapots and what nots with bold and bright colours. The furniture seems like the owner made them from pallets in their spare time. In reality they probably paid quite a lot for the semi-functioning tables. The place was buzzing when we visited and is obviously very popular with the locals

I absolutely love this place! Grooviest little cafe around!! If you enjoy a chilled environment with awesome tunes in the background while drinking your coffee, this is the place to be.

Little Oink is a quality cafe at the Cook shops. They serve consistently great coffee, the menu is unique and the food delicious. The staff are friendly, there is a small kids play area and several high chairs.

Located at the Cook shops, Little Oink is a small café serving breakfast and lunch daily, and tapas on Friday evening. It’s eclectic and brightly coloured – a description not only fitting of the décor, but also the menu as we found out.

On our morning visit, we select the Smooth Criminal and the Polkadot Zucchini. The Smooth Criminal is a vibrant dish. A creamy banana berry smoothie is generously poured into a large bowl then heaped with quality muesli (think nuts, seeds, sultanas, puffed wheat and grains), fresh berries, pistachios, chia seeds and some of the sweetest figs we’ve had in a long time. In a word, it’s delicious. As an added bonus, it’s also vegan friendly and gluten free, so will please just about anyone.

The Polkadot Zucchini consists of two poached eggs, fried zucchini fritters, a smattering of feta and a wonderfully bright beetroot puree. We’re lucky enough to have arrived early just as the first batch of fritters are finishing cooking, making them perfectly fresh and crispy. The eggs are cooked to a firm poach, while the beetroot provides a nice clean contrast to the fritters. It’s not a huge serve, so we don’t leaving feeling overly full, but that’s probably a good thing when we’re eating something fried.

Just average. Not great, not bad, just average.

Service is pretty good, decor is tacky. Food was ok but nothing you couldn't easily make at home.

Not bad if you're a local, but there are many better options out there

I can see how this place would be a nice neighbourhood cafe for locals, particularly with kids. I don't live in the nearby area, so wouldn't say its worth going out of the way for. The staff were really friendly and warm, and the decor is quirky (it did feel almost a bit too grungey though), but on the morning I went they didn't have most of their menu available -- they had run out of the elements of most of their main breakfast dishes. I ended up having what was pretty basic bacon and eggs like I would make at home, and being more than $20 out of pocket for it with a coffee (which admittedly was a decent coffee). Just not up to the current standard in Canberra at that price point. But I can understand how it would be popular with locals.

Beautiful coffee. Delightful food. Fresh ingredients. Cheerful staff. West End/Carlton vibe. Eclectic decor. An amazing local treasure tucked away in a nondescript suburban shopping centre. A local gem! 💎

It's nice to find a quirky little cafe in the suburbs! I really like Little Oink and have been here a few time with friends, family and by myself. The food is yummy but there's lots of pork (obviously) on the menu. So if you're a vegetarian this place might not be for you. It's kid friendly because they have a special play area to keep the kidlets amused! There's also an outdoor area and the coffee is good too! They also serve cocktails and tapas on Friday afternoons. I recently had a BACON SCHNITZEL burger and it was pretty amazing. Who thinks of that? Little Oink do! I'd recommend this place if you haven't been here already and are looking for a fun cafe that does yummy breakfast, brunch and burgers.

Three friends and I adventured out to Cook in Belconnen to try Little Oink, known for its cute decor and pork-themed menu. We sat outside, and my seat had company – a lovely life-sized pig statue leaning on the bench, joining the conversation. We started with drinks – coffee for my friends, a soy hot chocolate ($5) for me. Whilst not Surry Hills-good, the hot chocolate did taste of chocolate rather than just soy and came with two marshmellows – yum! After admiring the fun menu item names (om-nom-nomlette, for example), I opted for the Jordo – a brioche roll with bacon, two eggs, cheese and tomato relish ($12), and

Beautiful coffee and great atmosphere. Most of the staff are familiar faces from the neighbourhood and make you feel welcome.

Only criticism is the kids area can encourage loud children but that's not the staffs fault.

Was pretty keen to check out this little spot after reading a blog about it by one of my regulars!

I arrived at 2:10 on a Saturday for lunch before heading into work and grabbed a menu and noticed that the kitchen closed at 2:30. I asked if it was too late for food and the server told me it wasn't and to take a seat. I sat down outside and she brought me water and said she would be back to take my order.

After 15 minutes she hadn't returned so I went inside knowing that the kitchen would close in 5 minutes. As I approached the counter the server an her manager were restocking the fridges and I asked if I could place an order for some food. The manger responded by saying that the kitchen was closed. I explained to her that her server had sat me outside about fifteen minutes ago and had told me that it wasn't too late for food. The manager looker at the server and the sever embarrassingly said "oh yeah sorry" to the manager rather than to myself. After a tangible awkward pause between the three of us I said "so no food" which was met by more awkwardness.

I decided not to push the issue and left after collecting my phone and keys from the table as other patrons watched on.

I'll definitely be back because I have heard many good things about this place and I know how the brain can go a little funny after a full Saturday service. However, these little spots that are starting to pop up all over Belconnen are vital in bringing more interest to the area. What draw card does a small cafe in Cook have over going for lunch in Acton or Braddon? Service is everything for a business so until little oink begins to recognise this, it will remain the little piggy in the big city.

Good luck.

Quiet and relaxed atmosphere for leisurely breakfast. Good food and reasonable coffee.

I thought I'd never meet a sour cherry Danish I didn't like - until now! Oh dear. You know when poor quality puff pastry is served cold? You get that lardy, cardboardy consistency. The glaze was a solid, weird jelly and the cherries did not taste like any sour cherry I've had before.

And I didn't much care for the atmosphere: service was a bit disinterested and the whole thing felt 'grimey'. The murals on the walls are a nice touch but the decor is otherwise disjointed. There's a fine line between retro and a jumble sale. Not a fan.

A plate full of left over. We went for a nice Saturday brunch but left with eating anything in the end. I ordered the pork belly and my partner ordered the pig farmers lunch. The waitress returned to say that the pork belly had run out, which was fine so I swapped to the pig farmers lunch also. Food: beautiful!! Big portions, great flavours and combinations. A great chef is working here.
Coffee: strong, bit bitter for my taste but some may like that.
Service: great! Quick, attentive, helpful
Decor: wasn't a fan of the rickety chairs and plastic tablecloths. Place looked quirky but looked a bit cheap. Kids toy area was good but needed a bit of TLC.
Location: Cook shops are very sad and unappealing. This place would be awesome in Kingston or braddon but then you would probably be whinging about no parking available.
Check this place out, I'll be back!

Pork Belly with Poached Eggs and Potato Rosti. Well seasoned. Quite rich.

Food was nice, but amenities grossed me out. Had a nice breakfast, coffee was ok, but when I had to go the loo, it was very unappealing. There was no lights, but when I opened the door with a little natural light I could see a very dirty toilet. That enough for me not to go back.

Favourite local brunch spot. Little Oink is tucked away at the Cook shops. Their blackboard specials change regularly and they have a smart method of 'DIY' menu options for creating your own eggs-and-sides. Coffee is terrific, I've always had a good cuppa there. Their menu aims to be on the creative and interesting side, something a little more than your standard cafe fare. Love it.

Loved it! Such a funky little cafe. Awesome decor and friendly staff. So fantastic to find a child friendly cafe. There was a play pen, books and toys a plenty, perfect for keeping little ones entertained so parents can have a coffee and eat some yummy food.

Super adorable and definitely on its way up in the world. The food was yummy and coffee was good too. It still feels a little empty and I think a couple of indoor plants and some more warm colors it would look exceptional! But the main thing was the food and coffee were great and staff were lovely!

As I stepped inside, the beautiful colours and images painted on the feature wall are the first things I notice. The front counter is made up of two mismatched long wooden buffet tables standing side by side. There are no spare tables left when we get there but after about a 15 minute wait, we were seated inside. The art work continues to the corner. By the front window is the specials menu (all $15) that's regularly updated. There's a designated playpen for the little ones with more brightly coloured images on the wall. Tea cups filled with sugar sticks adorn each table giving an extra feminine touch. I noticed that Two Before Ten coffee bean bags are displayed on the counter and ordered my usual soy mocha ($4.50). Served with a marshmallow on top, I'm really happy with this velve

Someone there has a sense of humour – and a taste for word play – as there are some great dish names on the menu , for example 'Don't go bacon my heart', 'Chorizo your own adventure', and 'Salmon to watch over me'. Cute.
