Review Cinnabar - Canberra

R T (Roy)
Loved the place and food was delicious. Although duck rolls were a bit too oily but the lamb chops were finger licking good. A bit pricey, otherwise I would have rated it 5-stars if it were a bit reasonably priced. But definitely worth the fine dinning with a great view!

A rather different experience compared to other Chinese restaurants. For a high end restaurant, the food quality and quantity do not justify the high price. Also the choice for plates and no bowls is not so suitable for rice. Food was decent although would not recommend the John Dory fish dish which was a single fillet and had chewy skin which was not edible.

A lovely lunch here today! Limited menu so each dish can be cooked well. We took recommendations from our waiter in order to try things we don't usually order: House made tofu with spicy pork mince was beautiful and the Chinese Broccoli dish was a very pleasant surprise. Mushroom dumplings and duck pancakes for entrees were also very tasty. Accompanying Jasmine rice was fluffy without a hint of stodge. We're going back!

I went here on a quiet Thursday evening and sat in a beautiful semi private both. Overall, a lovely experience but can't quite recommend to others as there are better options in Dickson. The decor and plating is very nice, but the standard of food falls short. I ordered 3 dishs: pork ribs, mushrooms ( there were 4 varieties) and bok choi with rice. The double fried Chinese greens was the most interesting. Most of the dish was stir fried with a large amount of coarsely chopped garlic. Another layer of julienned and deep fried leaves were piled on top ( see pic). The pork ribs were very sweet, the mushrooms very salty and the bok choy neutral tasting but oily. But together with rice, it all worked and tasted nice. I would not think much of the taste as individual dishes. The service was very prompt and the waitstaff pleasant and helpful. I liked my mojito, very fresh and nice. The cinnamon drink was not that great tasting for me, but there might be others who like it. It was very sweet.

We went on a night that was really quiet, was literally just myself and partner in the restaurant.. some of the food that was served up wasn’t very hot.. but still very tasty. I do think the price doesn’t reflect the quality or quantity of the food though.. would probably go back to try again 😊

Looking for a place to eat on a Sunday we came upon this gem. What a great find. Asian fusion food. All the dishes prepared with care, presented and served. Excellent, attentive service, great ambience, one of our most memorable eating experiences. We will return.

Went for a belated anniversary dinner. The banquet for two was absolutely delicious. The wait staff were friendly and prompt. The restaurant also listened when we wanted a break between servings so we could have time to have a drink and a chat.

Food was good. Well as a Singaporean, I'm pampered with whole lot of Chinese food in Singapore. My favorite dish is the homemade noodles. Tat bit spicy and very tasty. Oh since it's mooncake festival, we got one for free.

Went and ordered the soft shell crab. It was overcooked and considering the cost very dissapointing. Also had the wagyu beef dish. The beef and vegetables were diced and or shaved to the hilt. Lacked flavour and sauce as well as being very small serve. At about $30 disappointing. Had the special fried rice $30. Expected a decent amount of seafood and got tiny amounts. What was there was nice but $30 I expected more. The eggplant dish was the best of the nite and that made the overall experience okay.

Really enjoyed the opportunity to be treated in the private dining room. The fitout is spectacular and the feature wall in the private space is exquisite. The food was great too, thank you. The duck rolls, kung pao chicken, wagyu beef and tofu soup were my favourites. Thank you Sonny and Vivian, wishing you and your staff all the best.

I was excited to be going to this restaurant when we visited Canberra this weekend for the Cartier exhibition. Well going to this place almost ruined my weekend . Don’t the Chinese have rice to accompany their every meal??? There was no rice to be seen!! We only found this out after we had reluctantly consumed two of our main meals . The third main mean came out ,still no rice to be seen . When we asked where our fried rice was ,we were offered noodles!!! And told fried rice in 10 minutes . NO I want my meal with rice !!! Anyway eventually a bowl of boiled rice came out !! No protein to eat it with . We left .... kindly they gave us a 10% Discount on bill and rice not on bill . Thanks for nothing !!!! Will never go there again .... Having said that food tasted ok

We have eaten at this restaurant on several occasions and we have always been delighted. The food is beautifully prepared and the service is friendly and efficient. All the dishes that we have tried have been delicious but stand outs are the dry chilli beef, the duck floss cones, the beans in XO sauce and the drunken chicken. Cinnabar takes time honored Chinese dishes and lifts them out of the ordinary. A good example is the pineapple sweet and sour pork which is served in half a pineapple and tastes absolutely delicious. It is a pleasure to sit in this elegant beautifully decorated space and enjoy modern, fresh flavours created by master chefs from Hong Kong. We are really excited to have this new addition on the foreshore!

Not just the same old chinese food in a fancy place. The food was special. Handmade pancakes and noodles make such a difference. The wagyu beef was probably the best tasting beef I've ever put in my mouth. The sauces compliment and not drown out. Really good experience. Highly recommend.

Each dish was delicious, decent wine list and the staff were lovely.

It was a nice place to have fathers day lunch. The food was nice we all enjoyed it. But the wait staff hover around the tables like seaguls waiting for the next chip. Its a bit i think rude. However what we had was nice and will be back again one day.

The best combination of Chinese flavour and the modern catering I have ever seen so far.

Cinnabar was a huge disappointment! We came in a large group and ordered the banquet. There wasn't much food provided, it wasn't overly nice and the waitress argued with us over the bill while standing at our table. The 'vegetarian' sang choi bow was fried onion in a lettuce leaf which was really disappointing entree. I wouldn't visit again!

Went for my sister's 40th and they ruined our night. Not only was the service atrocious, they forgot my main so I had to eat elsewhere. Barely got an apology and got no compensation other than them taking the meal off my bill (which I didn't recieve anyway)

Everything was great from the atmosphere to the food. The one thing I would say is that the meals were a little small for the price you pay :)

We ordered a $48 shashimi 'platter' that was served as a few thin slices of salmon. Very disappointing considering the price tag. Also served a very, very small glass of wine. Not very generous. I would definitely give this restaurant another go but I'm not rushing back.

My second visit and it was fabulous. I will certainly be going back again. Especially loved the crispy eggplant.

Great atmosphere and service. Awesome location. Easily the best Chinese in Canberra!

The Chinese hamburgers are the best!! Accompanied by duck with beer sauce

Dinned at Cinnabar for dinner. It was incredible! Beautiful fit out, lovely and cool, exquisite and interesting decorations/ artifacts, and most of all Wonderful food ! It was fresh, clean, very lean tender meat. The duck rolls were "to die for". Not too much batter at all. The sweet and sour pork came in a calved out pineapple (beautiful presentation on all means) the sauces were sharp and were not sickly sweet! I believe this was the nicest Chinese I've had! Food was extremely fresh and came in such good time. Downside was - The restaurant was really lacking in customer service for location, standard and price. Was under impression that it was fine dinning. But understand they are still training and finding their feet. Am looking forward to revisiting again soon! Recommended! Good luck!
