Review The Spit Shack - Canberra

Been meaning to visit Black Fire for a while and we went this weekend on a Saturday night. The staff were really friendly and attentive which was great. The food was okay. I had read reviews 2 years ago that were fantastic but it seems to have dropped. We ordered the set menu for 3 People and the first 3 meals were so tiny. The final meal of pork, lamb and sides was okay but we still left hungry. Flavours were also nothing spectacular and I didn’t think it was value for money. Thank you to the friendly staff who served us but unlikely to come back.

I was recommended Black Fire a couple of years ago by a South American friend. I think it's lost some of that wowness of a new restaurant but it's still pretty decent. This franchise is along the same vein as Meat & Wine Co. I wouldn't call it fine dining, it's probably a very nice mid range place though. The portion sizes are fairly big, the staff are prompt and attentive and it's good value for money. Ppl giving this restaurant a 3 are too harsh. Entrées: House bread: What were you supposed to pour the oil into? It didn't really come with a dipping saucer. They had butter as well as oil... But no balsamic vinegar. Oysters: small size, good taste Prawns: Large, flavourful, amazing sauce. Octopus: Good amount, good taste. Came with avocado puree, onions, roasted peppers.. Very more-ish. Mains: meat v good. Dessert: large size but a let down. When asked to describe the dessert, the waitress just read about 30% of the printed description on the menu. It was supposed to be cheesecake and loosely resembled a deconstructed one, but didn't taste like one. The big roll of chocolate fondant was surprisingly good. It is World Chocolate Day ( July 7) so it's befitting to eat a big hunk of chocolate today. Drink: lychee mocktail good.

Took the kids to Canberra for the school holidays and went here last night. We were not disappointed, the food and service was amazing. So many varieties of food to choose from.

This place used to be a favourite, but today’s experience has left us looking for a new go to place for a great meal. We ordered the house bread which had an added extra of a hair running through it. Our entrees were good, no complaints there other than the way plates are ‘dropped’ in front of you. Service used to be good for follow up drinks and they used to come and top up your water, but there was none of that today. There is no shortage of staff, just a shortage of care and passion for the customer. I ordered a steak med-rare but it was well done. The rest of our meals were great but there were no courtesy calls to see how our meals were or if we wanted any more drinks. We had to go find someone to get a take away container for the other meal and we were presented with containers and the bill was dropped on top. We went to pay and we weren’t asked how our meals were or if we had a nice night - nothing. I was going to politely let them know about the poorly cooked steak and our hairy bread but wasn’t given the opportunity - not to be a trouble maker or for discounts but just so they knew to make it better for others. Instead we paid our bill and are leaving this feedback in a public forum instead. It’s a shame - used to love this place.

Very good food and service, I particularly enjoyed the tomahawk steak. Wonderful all around

We were really excited to try this place but unfortunately it was horrible. I am not sure if they were just having an off day but the service was horrible, especially as we were the only ones in the restaurant. The meat was so so fatty and everything was tasteless. We even had hair in our food and their response was “oh we will take 10% off”.

Steak is good but surprisingly not that spectacular. Not sure why they put bbq sauce on it for you. Mushrooms are great though! Overall enjoyable, hearty.

The atmosphere was good. It wasn't too noisy so we could actually have a good conversation. The food was absolutely delicious and just the right portion. Yes, the meals can be pricey but it was no more expensive than anywhere else around there and it had a selection of food I felt like whereas other restaurants nearby didn't. It's a perfect restaurant to celebrate a special event or occasion.

Got the ginormous Shack Stack. For $15 you get a big tray of spit roast pork or lamb (I got both), sauce of your choice (chilli), fries & coleslaw. Both meat were tender & soft, well seasoned, good even without the sauce, but the chilli sauce gave it an extra kick. The fries were ok, a bit squished under all the meat. The coleslaw was light & refreshing. Overall great value and you better be hungry!

Delicious, tender, moist and fresh meat, on fresh bread with gravy and sauce... One of life's simple pleasures. Highly recommend as a quick lunch (the 6 inch is plenty big).

Great rolls for when hunger strikes. The meat I find to be a bit hit and miss. I think they may have recently changed hands as nowadays it seems the meat is more miss.

Fast, straight to the point, good food, convenient, and above all genuine. The staff is nice and there a standing place outside to eat, but above all you go there for the food as well as the atmosphere

I have spent my past weeks working my way through the Braddon eating scene and finally made a night to try Sub which I hope will become my go to for The Hamlet. I frequently see many customers taking away foot longs and 2 footers... which only fills me with more promise.

I ordered their Roast Lamb from the spit on a Six Inch Sub with a side of Coleslaw and smothered in Chilli and Garlic Aioli.

Let's start by saying it's a decent sub... better than subway but nothing that will blow you away. The bread holds well under the load of meat, sauce and salad. The meat is a bit hit and miss with some slightly chewier bits but generally satisfactory. The additional coleslaw provided a bit of textural change but made it a bit messier to contain. The sauce didn't pack enough punch to tie it all together. Like I said it's definitely a decent sub when put together I just wish it packed more of a wow factor.

Unfortunately tonight there was nothing brewing in the oven but many nights there will be and you can stand there and gaze into the glorious slow cooking process.

I love their friendly service with a smile. The Hamlet in general seem to have great customer service. Although there are no long queues, they do get their fair share of customers coming to order and take away.

I guess the million dollar question is would I come back? It definitely deserves it's place in the Hamlet and I guess if I was in the area and after a quick bite to go.. I would definitely be back.

Basically you choose what meat roll you want (pork or lamb, foot or six inch), choose your sauce and then you pay for any extras you might want (eg coleslaw, onions etc). The pork that day tasted good, though I wish it had some crackling. Tried the Paprika relish which was quite unusual (but nice) and some coleslaw. They also serve soft drinks as well. If you need a meat fix (specifically pork or lamb) and you happen to be in Braddon, then Spit Shack might just be your place.

Great meat!. The lamb was tender, the prom and crackling crunchy and a good balance of salty. Good choices of sauce. Overall just meat in bread, nothing amazing. Needed something to break the heavy meat-and-sauce taste. Great for a quick snack though.

False opening hours. Spit Shack does not open at 0630, despite advertising that it does.

Delicious! Tender, tasty goodness. Great price. ALWAYS have the gravy and sauce of some kind. You can also just get a plate of meat and gravy if you don't want the bread! (The bread is also delicious).

I ordered the lamb roll with gravy and mint sauce. The lamb was tender and flavoursome but it definitely wasn’t a high quality cut and there was a lot of fat on the meat. I also wished they offered other bread roll option besides white bread. Overall, my lamb roll was tasty. I like how customers can personalize their roll by choosing the meat, sauce and extras; and I would return to Spitshack to try out other roll combinations.

Last time I wrote about The Spit Shack, I said I would be back and I am! But this time I’m at their newly opened store in The Hamlet, located conveniently near the city on Lonsdale Street, Braddon. I'm so glad they've opened up a store just a stones throw away from work and home because The Spit Shack is hands down, one of my favourite quick, cheap and delicious eats in Canberra. I know the menu is pretty simple with only four different products, the pork roll, the lamb roll, the cevapcici and finally the egg and bacon roll but surprising with this limited menu there are hundreds of variations you can make thanks for the fantastic toppings and sauces. When I first came to The Spit Shack, it was pretty late so they didn’t have any crackling or any lamb left. I was determined to try these and I can gladly say, they were both worthwhile!
