Review Petaling Street - Carnegie

Johnny Le
Came here for a quick meal and was impressed by how good and satisfying the meal was. Price is slightly more dear than your general takeaway, but not too much. What you see came to a little over $30, which fed two. I'd definitely come here again. Have already recommended some friends to come here to give it a try.

Been a customer here for many years now. This is my family’s go to restaurant. Our favorite dishes are ‘steamed fish with black bean’, ‘Hainanese Chicken rice’, and ‘Salted Fish Fried rice’. Service is pretty good here as well. The price is very reasonable and porting size is big. The only nitpicking is lack of ventilation. Sometimes I just feel like I’m sitting in a square box but service and foods make up for it. Check them out if you like Malaysian/ Asian food. Highly recommended 👍

Authentic malaysian taste! Love the restaurant, the service is okay and the highlight is the Marmite Fried Chicken! Will come back again

I recommend the roast pork! Delicious and fast, friendly service. Had lunch there and while it was quite nice, it could have been better. The satay beef was quite tasty but had hardly any broccoli, compared to the picture. The roast duck was also quite nice, as was the mie goreng. Worth a try. Might go back. Lots of places to try in the street.

Good price for food and really quick service. I would say that quantity could be increased, but definitely the tastiest Crispy Pork Belly along Koornang Road. They also take surcharge on credit card, so be aware! Have to request chilli oil / soy sauce (Free of charge). Dishes come in good portions, but could definitely balance the rice / meat ratio. Parking located at the back near Carnegie Library, very easy access. Their different fruit drinks (not pictured) are well priced and delicious to accompany any meal!

We had a great dinner there, staffs were very friendly and helpful. Dishes were yum, reasonable price, $15-$20 per person, really good value.
Upbeat Melon
Large portion sizes. Good price. Food tastes great. Cannot complain.

Good price, lots of variety and very delicious. I've been to this place many times before and it never disappoints me. The Hainan chicken rice and soup was very good.

They used to have a CBD outlet back in 2016 but unfortunately, it closed down. I always liked the food at Petaling St, way way better than PappaRich. Pretty decent Malaysian food honestly, it’s like those Chinese dai chow/chau type of restaurants 🇲🇾 <br/><br/>I really loved their marmite chicken 🍗 Big pieces of chicken with crunchy skin - absolute bomb (probably prefer this than the ones we get in Malaysia where the chicken pieces are tiny & no crunchy skin)<br/><br/>🗓 Visited in February 2019

Do not go in here. Very bad experience. Staff is so slow and carefree. Extra Roti is $6.90 are u kidding me? I didn’t touch the chicken as it smell weird. Had the food with jus the gravy. And a surcharge for card. I don’t mind paying but be reasonable. Even Indian place don’t charge that much for an extra bread. I am really concerned about the hygiene as well. Didn’t even drink the water.
Emily Yang
Staff there are so rude and helpless. Food is a bit greasy. Me and three of my friends went there last two weeks ago for dinner, we asked for an additional rice and the staff behaved rudely to us. The rice didn’t come at the end and we weren’t informed by any staff!
Life=Food
Came here for a quick lunch with my colleagues.<br/>The Hainan Chicken Rice is a little dry. But my combination roast rice was perfect.<br/><br/>I would recommend their combination rice to my friend. Definitely coming into the area more often as my work started in the area soon.<br/><br/>
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Penang kuay teow with seafood did not have seafood and was just soy sauce and egg which was really disappointing. Roti was just microwaved which was disappointing. Service was good but it did not make up for the food.
Bey Yan
Food was too salty and too oily. Ordered nasi lemak with beef curry. Was given ginger rice (used for chicken rice ) instead of coconut rice. Beef was tough and can’t chew through most bits. Eggplant dish was just filled with oil. End up with tummy ache
The Brunchabout Diaries
The food here was alright. The meals were quite large but they didn’t feel very fresh and had a few fatty/chewy bits of meat in them. The roast pork was probably the best dish here, however, was a little cold when it arrived. <br/><br/>On the positive side, it is quite cheap so perfect for those looking for a big feed on a budget and service is relatively quick.

Another visit to the Koornang Road precinct, this time to a Malaysian street food restaurant, Petaling Street. There was a constant flow of folk coming in, eating and then off again having satisfied their penchant for Malaysian fare. Our dishes arrived very quickly and we enjoyed both. Other plates of food observed coming for the kitchen to other tables looked hearty and impressive. Another visit required most definitely!

Always great tasting food with huge portion and unbeatable price. Can order 1 dish for 2 ppl. Gave is the roast chicken with egg noodle, and any of the barramundi dishes. Also love the ice kacang.
Spinning Round Horse Kick
The Petaling Street in Carnegie they have roast pork/ duck, which the restaurant in Clayton doesn’t have. One serve comes with many meat, I could finish them, but too full afterwards😂
Kaseyzz
Generally, most of the dishes are too salty. They add too much soy sauce so you will definitely need to drink a lot of water afterwards. Anyway, we still like to grab some take away from the restaurant.
Sumaiya Rizvi
Love their food and this signature petaling Street fish, the rice was a nasi goreng, can’t wait to go there again. The staff is friendly and efficient. <br/>Definitely worth the wait because the food arrives pretty quick.
Prabhassorn Chansiri
I ordered hainan chicken set take away and they alway forget to give me hainan chicken sauce. How is this alway happen. The staff should be more careful.
Ellie May
Well, well, well there was a grub in my laksa! The waiter didn’t speak of it only ran to the kitchen and ignored it. I was also charged full price for the inconvenience.
Charlotte Cooper
Everything is so cheap, big portion you can even take away for tomorrow’s lunch. The food was so good, with a lot of varieties. The fish with rice for dinner is a bargain. Very tasty Malaysian food with a bit of a mixture of Chinese, Thai, Indian, Singapore, a bit of everything
❤️ From 🇧🇩
Just bad. Especially customer service. We asked for a sit and the whole restaurant was empty but they would have us sit where they wish to. Asked for a reason and one of the girl said it was booked. 1hr here nothing. Still empty.

This place used to be good when it first opened, but both the quality of food and service have dropped dramatically. I am by no means a fussy eater, but the food has become bland and sooooo incredibly oily. I have ordered takeaway tonight and this will be the last time! They not only got the order wrong, but started arguing back and telling us that's what we ordered. The food was pretty much inedible. What a waste of $50. I've learnt my lesson for the very last time with this place.
Leo
Been here several times and the food over here is average. Cheap and edible if you are hungry. The fish dish is not too bad but I find the Chow Keuh Teow is a tad oily.
The Dear Luncher
"Winding your way down on Petaling Street. Lite in your head, and dead on your feet"<br/><br/>The Dear Luncher and family have ordered takeaway from Petaling Street before, now it was time to perch inside for a feed. It was a sweltering Melbourne day and Petaling Street offered comfort and air conditioning. The Carnegie branch of Petaling is spacious and expansive. The menu is also expansive. Almost too expansive, too many choices. Upon being seated there seemed to be about five different laminated A3 documents to peruse. The walls were also peppered with pictures of dish options. This was annoying, I'm here to eat not apply for a mortgage. But I digest, as I often do.<br/><br/>Pan fried pork dumplings (12) were ordered, as well as a Char kway teow and Beef Rendang (with rice). This turned out to be quite a lot of food for just two people, but The Dear Luncher just rolled up his sleeves and got to work.<br/><br/>The dumplings were of a high quality. The casings were still fluffy and soft despite being fried - delicious little morsels. This is the difference between being lightly fried and drowned in oil fried. The Char kway teow was absolutely spot on. Mrs Luncher was lamenting the lack of prawns (only two) but Your Dear Luncher doesn't care much for those creatures. This particular Char kway teow was a fabulous exponent of this well-traveled dish, highly recommend.<br/><br/>The Beef Rendang was aromatic and plentiful. Served on a bed of lettuce it looked terrific. It was not the softest and most "pully-aparty" Rendang The Dear Luncher has consumed, but it was satisfactory.<br/><br/>All in all a plesant experience. The Dear Luncher enjoys comfort and spacious surrounds and Petaling offers this up to their clientele. Beer prices very good as well. $6 for a Tsing-Tao - big tick.

Delicious late afternoon lunch, roast combo of duck, BBQ pork, and roast pork with dry noodles was delicious, also had special fried rice and tofu hot pot. We ordered pork dumplings which I would give a miss. Carnegie street is pretty cool place with lots of restaurants

Never been to Malaysia before, so don't know if the food is authentic or not.<br/>The Hainanese chicken was juicy and tasted good, but the dipping sauce was weird, seemed like there was too much ginger.

Food positioning seems very common here.<br/><br/>Few weeks back we had a family meal here to find that there were semi solid block of brown sugar still intact with the marmite chicken. That's fairly trivial when compared to our  diarrhoea and fever the next day.<br/><br/>We seem to have forgotten about such an incident and being wet & windy weekend, we ordered take away of their marmite pork chop and assam fish last night. No one was in the place and our pick up was fast. Perhaps they didn't practice food safety when handling our food!<br/>Today we paid the price of diarrhoea, body chills and fevers only to feel a little better at the end of the day.<br/><br/> I think the pain from this will have us stay away from this place for good.<br/><br/>#notGoingBackToPetalingStreetCarnergie

I tried my wife's meal and I've had their hainanese chicken before and both are keeping the rating a bit higher for me. Unfortunately my duck with rice dish was a disaster. The redeeming point was the crispy skin. The negatives:<br/>- too salty. Like, WAAAAAYYY too salty<br/>- sweetened rice. Why ?!<br/><br/>Whilst they are only two negatives, they completely destroyed the flavour of the dish.<br/><br/>On the up side, service was very, very quick.

If you have never had Malaysian street food before it's worth a try. Think simple dishes in a casual setting with lots of flavour. Menu is massive with plenty of variety.

I popped in for a quick lunch mid week & it didn't disappoint. The BBQ meat in the window lured me in, so I chose 2 types of BBQ meat in my noodle soup. <br/>The amount of food that came out was a lot! <br/>The crispy pork was super tasty, and the duck was delicious. The broth was simple, but good. I didn't eat too many noodles as I needed stomach real estate for the meat- however they were slightly chewy and lovely. <br/>My whole giant meal was under $14 and I would eat there again. The decor was basic, but clean. I could imagine when it's busy that it'd be a really noisy restaurant as the whole interior is tiled. The service was friendly & efficient, and the complimentary tea was a good temperature to drink.

Just once. Forgettable. Your regular Malaysian joint. Nothing special. They have a huge menu though so there is a variety to sample. Mains were ok but the dim sum (small eats) tasted like they came out of a frozen pack.

Just ordered takeaway and I won't be returning to this restaurant! Firstly the price is different to the one advertised on their window! There was no value for what I paid for, just some rice, two prawns and their separated tails in the mix along with some very dry/stale anchovies which led me to discover that the meal was microwaved and not cooked fresh upon ordering!
Stevotango
Overall it's a nice Malaysian restaurant locally with large selection of menu. The reason for the low rating is because this is below the usual Petaling Street outlet standards when comparing to the City or Glen Waverley.
Mika Jiang
Horrible food!!!!! Even though all the restaurants were closed I would never ever go to this place!!!!cant believe the threshold is soooo low to do the food business and can understand why the chef can cook such a disaster!!!!!!!!
Nelly
This place is exactly what it says it is. Maylasian street food. Nothing fancy, inexpensive and yummy. Service is basic but quick. Since I live near by I will definitely be going back.<br/>

Went here with family and received table service immediately. Ambience and decor isn't amazing yet the food to come was good. Ordered the ma po dou fu and the Char K Teow. Very flavoursome although texture not perfect. Great home style malaysian and cantonese food and thoroughly enjoyed. Good place to have a nice chinese meal at a good price
Malvinlim75
Just ordered the worst takeaway ever. <br/><br/>Roast duck and bbq pork rice. The duck was mainly boney parts near the neck. <br/><br/>Char kuay teow - soggy, tasteless and no chilli at all. Was never this bad. <br/><br/>Wonton noodle dry - noodles had little flavour, mainly a one-dimensional black sauce taste. <br/><br/>It's like they rip you off if you take away cos you can't complain on the spot and ask for a change. <br/><br/>Never again.

This Petaling branch is relatively new on Koornang Rd. and they are doing pretty good IMO. There are so many reasons you should try this place if you like Asian food. First off, the dining room is spacious and air conditioned with all new tables and chairs. Secondly, the food meets Petaling (taste and portion size) standards and is reasonably priced. Thirdly, staffs are accommodating and friendly. Try steamed barramundi with black bean sauce it's absolutely a kicker. Recommended.
Sean
The Malaysian hawker style is fantastic. Everything I've had there so far has been delicious. The chicken ribs are to die for. There are a lot of Asian restaurants in Carnegie, this is a stand out

One of the few or possibly the only place in Carnegie to have roast duck, soy sauce chicken, and Siu Yuk (crispy Roast pork belly) hanging in the window. So if you're in the area and want duck on dry egg noodles like I always seem to do, and don't want to drive all the way to Springvale, Glen Waverely or Box Hill to get it, this is the place to go. Their other dishes are pretty standard and similar to their other outlets. The steamed fish is really good value but their Hokkein Mee is drowning in oil and dark soy.

Food quality is decent but service can be slow and unresponsive during busy times. Waiters could do a lot to acknowledge patrons waiting to order.
Bluesstatsman
Arrived on a Sunday night for dinner with friends. Service wasn't as bad as expected after reading previous reviews. Food was OK, although the wontons in the wonton soup were nearly inedible. All together acceptable but a bit average. There are a lot of similar restaurants in the area I'd like to try before returning to Petaling Street.
Loumin
Decent quality food not too different from the other outlets. The menu selection is huge and if you order a few dishes, cost can quickly add up.

Update: we keep coming back for the steamed fish! It seems the standard is getting better - used to be pretty hit and miss, but lately they've been more consistent. Keep it up guys! <br/><br/>Big range of foods served here for reasonable prices. I particularly love the steamed fish because it's so value for money. Service could be better, and in general food is quite oily and salty, but it's basically like an average hawker centre you'd commonly find in Singapore or Malaysia. Oh, but don't bother with the chendol - it's awful.
Ben
A positive surprise! Not a fan of Petaling St in general, but this Carnegie branch is awesome. My fav dishes here are ChaoKoawTeow , Curry Laksa and anything with curry chicken! Enjoy.
Igor
Love it! Quality Malaysian in the suburbs. Takeaway favourite with many orders of duck, hainanese chicken, sambal beans, etc. Always delivers on taste. Service can be a bit slow at times. Can't comment on dine in experience yet.<br/>

Tried it once, definitely not coming back! Fat beef, chicken curry had chicken legs only, lousy tea, low quality rice, food nuked, not cooked! Unsmiling waitress, and on top of all that - faulty EFTPOS terminal!  Avoid it !

Enjoyable meal for a group catch up. Went there with a group during the week for dinner, We ordered a few meals to share including the 3 way Peking Duck for $56. The first 2 ways - wrapped Peking duck (which we had to do ourselves) and the duck meat with beanshoots were quite tasty. When part 3 arrived, it was the worst soup I had ever tasted. It was filled with pickled/salted vegetables and loads of ginger, which none of us enjoyed (those who were game enough to try it). It had no real flavour to it and it did not seem like any stock I have ever had. Our other entrees of dumplings was very enjoyable as was the rest of our meal, which included the Roast pork with Crackling, Combination Hor Fun, Pad Thai, Sizzling Beef & Stir Fried Mix Vegetables. Overall, it was good value.<br/>The only downside to all this was the headache and dryness of mouth that was encountered the next day by some of us due to the possibility of excess MSG used.

Had a late dinner at Petaling last night. I had the Malaysian laksa and my companion had the beef rendang, both arrived almost before we ordered them in the most enormous bowl, they were the largest serves. Food was very tasty the only down side was the laksa was light on anything that wasn't noodles. The stock was that good I didn't care. Definitely worth another visit to checkout more of the menu.

Dinner from Melbourne. Me and my Husband went for a dinner in carnegie, we live in carnegie for over 30yrs. Petaling street is a very comfortable space to seat. And they had many seats, they have plenty of seat upstair too.<br/>Every time i went in there they are the busyness place.<br/>Due to their busyness they alway delay on the foods. But if i go anywhere I can get the foods that easy, it already been made long time. I rather wait for a while in order to get good fresh made foods.<br/>Petaling street staffs are very friendly services, I have seen they run up and down up and down, they are very hard working staffs.

Great Value. As a frequent diner in this restaurant, i almost always order their roast duck/crispy pork and it is delicious! Being a local to Carnegie, this joint saves me the 20 min trip down to Springvale which is very convenient for me. <br/>I have been to a couple of other branches of Petaling St (Glen Waverley/Box Hill) and this is the only one that offers fresh roasts. <br/><br/>The decor is very warm and inviting. The kitchen is upstairs and a lift brings down the food which is pretty cool. Family friendly too which is fantastic because I usually take my 2 very loud kids. On a busy night for this restaurant, tables are full, people are constantly coming and going, plates of food are everywhere and plenty of chitter chatter. <br/><br/>It is disappointing to see the negative reviews on customer service at this Petaling Street branch and to be honest I am a little puzzled by it because the waiting staff have always been very accomadating to me whenever i needed something. I think all these situations have happened when the restaurant is extremely busy.
Louisyear
Poor customer service. Wait staffs are not proactive, they were just standing and do nothing. I had to call them to order my food. Not just that, I was asked to move to another table while I am eating my food and I refused.<br/><br/>Pro= nothing<br/>Cons= lousy wait staffs, a little expensive, poor customer service.
Royzton01
Went there for a meal in november, looked like a senior member of staff(female may be in her 30s)...did not serve us any water when we sat down, had to wait for a while untill we could place the order even though the place was empty....basically need to improve on customer service skills ..
Saladzzz
Worst service and food ever. I should've checked the reviews before entering this terrible restaurant. Wasted my time and money. Will never ever come back again.
Michael Lee
Terrible service: had to get our own menus, each dish came out one by one every 15-30 minutes. After 45 minutes, my partner had not gotten any of her food or drink, and we decided to cancel her order and leave.<br/>Terrible food: the Penang prawn noodle soup was made by someone who'd never tasted it before; fish cake was tasteless (and shouldn't be in a Penang prawn noodle anyway), prawns were not fresh, broth had way too much MSG.
Foodnatic
Curry chicken taste like Asam Chicken. Poor.. First visit to this outlet and they have a different menu compared to the branches in Clayton and Glen Waverly. Missed out on my favourite chicken and salted fish fried rice so took up the Nasi Lemak option instead, which comes with a small side serve of curry chicken.<br/><br/>Probably the worst tasting curry chicken I have experienced in the hawker styled eateries in Melbourne. The curry was sourish and they had only included 2 miserable drumsticks. <br/><br/>Just had nasi Lemak at Grand Tofu yesterday and PJ's (at Carnegie ) is way off.
Millenium_neil82
Tongue numbing food! And that's not a good thing.... I acknowledge that MSG is unavoidable, and necessarily, in most restaurants. I used to work in a restaurant, and I understand it is too expensive and time consuming to make tasty food without MSG in them, unless you can charge customers a small fortune. However, the amount of MSG this restaurant adds to their food is both inexcusable and evidence of their lack of culinary skills. I hadn't had this much MSG in my food in a very long time — the dish had so much MSG that my tough went numb! I know it's not exactly a silver spoon restaurant, but it is also not a $6.50 take away joint neither.
Charlotte
Food was nice and cheap, all in all we enjoyed dinner there, though the service was really poor and the fish we ordered did not come with rice as the waiter told us
Jack Bee
We went for a quick meal on Sunday late afternoon. The place is basic yet clean with great speedy service. The food was very tasty. We loved the canal rendang beef and the Nasi Pattaya.
Harry Lust
Extensive menu. The service was friendly & fast. Had both roast pork & a tofu entree which where good. Waitress recommended the whole fish which was delicious. Only criticism is that they are BYO but have NO glasses, just plastic cups.
Arby
Tried it twice and was disappointed both times. I know not to expect haute cuisine but the Rendang was so fatty as to be inedible and tonight the chicken curry was made up of chicken legs only. It is not that cheap that this is acceptable. Also it would be better if the plates of food weren't thrown at us. I can see you are busy but just a little effort would be nice. Probably being picky but the dishwasher in apron, rubber gloves etc doesn't add much to the ambiance as she continually wanders through the restaurant.
Foreveraussie
Petaling Street - I liked it.. I have been a local resident for over 30 years and the Landscape of Carnegie - Koonang Rd is forever changing.<br/>Petaling St is just one of the latest changes, and is one for the better.<br/><br/>It is not setup as 5 star, but the staff that served me tonight were Friendly, Polite, neatly attired.<br/>Ok it is a Monday night so may not have been over busy, but there would have been at least 30+ patrons, and at least 4 waiting tables.<br/><br/>My meal came promptly, and was very enjoyable.<br/>Won Tons and Peking duck and soup (R3 I think).<br/><br/>It is easy to be picky about new restaurants, but getting any new business off the ground will have its teething problems.<br/><br/>I will be back.
Reviewer
Pleasantly surprised Family.... Pleasantly surprised<br/>Family loved it<br/>Homely at tentative staff <br/>The food was great!!!<br/>One if the best rendang beef I have had in a while and it's huge!<br/>Really like it and will be back <br/>Great value

Terrible service. Didn't have half of the menu available. Tried to charge for food we didn't receive. Dissapointing.
Melbourne JL
All I wanted as to be fed, and they couldn't do that one job. Our family and friends have been here together for about 3 times and it was just disappointing each time forward. Each time, we were placed in the worst table - facing the dirty dishes and received very average, lacklustre service. The Chicken Curry and Canai were dry and rock hard, absolutely could not stomach it. The fish did not taste fresh, and we had to ask for one of our other dishes 3 times through 3 different waiters. Service was just as disappointing; slow, and mostly unsincere. I recommend trying the other better restaurants down the road until these clowns up their game.
S4Rsteve
Walk a few more steps and eat somewhere else. Being locals we looked forward to trying a new cheap eat. Within 5 minutes of seating our drinks got knocked over by a rushing waiter and my camera hit the floor. We were moved to another table. Waited 25min for terrible satay skewers and curry puffs that never arrived. Another 20min later and two very average dishes arrived. A char keow teow should be their best dish being Malaysian street food, it was mostly oil. Decent serving size but no flavour. My partners dish wasn't much better. Lots of nicer places to eat on the strip, and you'll be served in under half the time.
