Review The Steam Engine - Chatswood

Pretty much one of the best takeaway coffee shops around Chatswood area. The only drawback is that the wait times are usually quite high and could easily be upto 15min wait sometimes (and mostly atleast 10min wait). The customer service is quite nice and friendly and they would even remember your name (to put on the coffee cup for your order) after a few visits.

The best single origin espresso I have ever had in Sydney. Will definitely go back ……….

These guys are always on point...coffee, service and food. Can't fault them. Best coffee joint in Chatswood using Toby's and you probs wouldn't even know it's Toby's because they execute it better than the roasters themself. Good stuff Steam Engine, good stuff.

Recently started working at Chatswood and Steam Engine instantly became my favourite coffee shop there, hands down. Super friendly staff (good looking too) and their house blend tastes great, their batch brew & cold brews are also must try.

Had my coffee here this morning at it was great. Vapor coffee. So good that they serve 6oz coffees and lend jars if customers have forgotten their keep cups. Great environmentally-conscious cafe. Loved the interior design too and the use of space.

This is the best coffee I have ever had. Amazing customer service; very friendly and knowledgeable staff! I tried a long black coffee that I never usually have because it’s too bitter but the one they recommended has change my view on coffee. As far as food goes, The Steam Engine had some great gluten free options for me as well. Top notch!

Steam Engine is the funky ‘hipster-esque’ café at Chatswood station, run by two passionate guys who seem to know what they are doing when they make their coffees! I always wanted to try the place out but never got around to it because of the enormous lines early in the morning. Always a good sign! I bit the bullet and waited in line last month perhaps? and with that one coffee – I think I’m hooked! It’s a really tiny place, mostly adorned with the artisan style wooden stools, blackboard menus, random artefacts – old books, mason jars (duh – I did mention hipster), suitcases, visible piping etc. The ambience is dimly lit but don’t let this fool you! They have pumping music every morning – making the start of the work day – just that little bit exciting :) I’ve only ever tried their cappuccinos – and they are one of the few good take away coffees in Chatswood! The flavour is rich, texture smooth and you know for a fact that it’s made with love. They also do food – which I haven’t tried but want to! For the “geeks” – they have a special coffee menu – cold press, single origin beans etc.. Again, I haven’t been that adventurous. I only come here for the “I have a 9-5 average job and I need a wake me up coffee” – which they deliver – on point! As soon as you stand in line, you are welcomed by the staff’s warm smiles and energy. I think the personal hello wakes me up more than the actual coffee! And they always always remember everyone’s names! I’ve only been here 4 times or so – and I’m always greeted with a “Hi Vruchi! :D“ I do need to mention their stand out service on two occasions: 1. I didn't have enough cash on me and I was willing to pay the $0.50 extra to pay by card. Having been there once before they said it was fine and I could pay them later. I did go back the next day to pay them for the coffee, but they out right refused saying the coffee was on the house! That honestly made my day! 2. Recently, on Monday, I could not contain the excitement and when asked about my weekend, I told them I was engaged! The staff genuinely seemed happy, congratulated me and gave me a coffee on the house to celebrate the occasion :) A service always desired but rarely achieved to this standard! It is very rare to find a café, that is this busy yet the staff still manages to look after each customer personally and treat everyone as individuals. You can see that they aren't here just to make money – but they are here to forge genuine connections with people.

Simply an oasis in a dessert of bad coffee in Chatswood. There is such a good energy and friendliness in the coffee shop. There is a que and a wait early in the morning, however everyone is happy and positive and the coffee is worth the wait. My ritual after a gym work out is to pick up a takeaway coffee, a beautiful start to the day. I recommend this place highly, especially if you love a great coffee. Cheers

The Steam Engine provided us with 3 different brews in thermos to serve to our guest for a morning charity event at our office.... the coffee was thoroughly enjoyed! Awesome personal touch and service! Massive thank you from us.

Worth it... Worth every cent! Try the cold drip- hell, try it all! Cannot race enough about this place!

Have been waiting years to find a great coffee shop in Chatswood. Finally there's one. I absolutely love this shop. Superb coffee, Superb atmosphere, Superb staff!!! Just cant wait to stop and grab a coffee in the mornings and the steam boys always make me leave with a smile on my face and an excellent, freshly brewed coffee in my hand.

came here with a friend last week. had a coffee and banana bread. The coffee was horrible and burnt, and the banana bread was an oily mess. Would not come back.

Shockingly bad coffee shop. The coffee is watery and sometimes tastes like gritty burnt beans and overpriced. Avoid this place. Locomotion Coffee is a much better option.

I like to have my long black before heading to the city Wednesday Thursday every week and this place never disappoint me! The service is excellent, the guy at the register is explaining to the customers the type of blend they have. They are serving Toby's Estate. The atmosphere is great...I have nothing bad to say. Well done guys! Keep up the good work!

Perfect coffee take-and-run .. standards are high with pride dropped in the shots. Great healthy sides and smoothies as well. Favourite -> bircher muesli cup with blueberry / strawberry topper.. perfect with a grande latte !!

The Cold Brew is disgusting.  It is weak and sour.  There's no flavour at all.  The only worthwhile thing about it is the cute bottle, but wait IT LEAKS!<br/><br/>Do not bother trying.

Well... They said they serve single origin. And today's special is bean from kenya with 1700m altd. They said the taste would be lemonade, grapefruit.<br/>I tested the barista regarding his knowledge, he knows nothing about it. So basically he is just a coffee maker who are not engaging with coffee itself..<br/>And the espresso taste is not coming up. I only taste hot milk.

The place look so funky, always a lot of people hanging around during the day. Super convenient location being on the corner of the intersection between the train station, bus station & the mall. The coffee was good, I would prefer it a bit stronger, but it was smooth & not bitter.

Perfect place to grab a coffee whenever you are at the Chatswood Interchange, I usually have the regular cappuccino, take one for my wife as she loves coffee. Their coffee is their forte though I went for their "Turmeric & Vanilla" hot beverage.<br/>Also had a toasted "Soy & Linseed Sourdough with avocado and vegemite".<br/><br/>The beverage had a fantastic aroma. Taste-wise it was pleasant being able to taste turmeric and a slight hint of vanilla - was not overpowering or overly sweet at all.<br/>Would definitely have it again if other stores run out of soup again though it is unfortunately expensive at $8!<br/><br/>The sourdough was as expected - tough with a specified aftertaste. <br/>I make my sandwich mixing the avocado and vegemite together to avoid the strong tanginess so it was difficult to enjoy this but not bad for a bite. Took a while to make though.<br/><br/>Not bad - the staff are actually very friendly and attentive.

The coffee here is really very good and the staff are really friendly however the coffee is way overpriced so I usually go to the others nearby

I ordered my usual skim latte and while the coffee is very smooth and creamy, the coffee itself was not particularly strong or bitter. The place is located very close to Chatswood station so it does get quite busy but the service is very fast and friendly.

Friendly crew at The Steam Engine. My skim cap was well made but I thought the Single Origin beans were a little mild. It can get quite busy as it's right next to the station entrance.

Coffee is awesome, always! I like to pick up my coffee here just before meeting a friend as you can always expect a friendly holla from staff (with a little bit of cheeky at times) and most importantly, smooth and aromatic beautiful coffee!

You want to know who does coffee well? Steam Engine does coffee really well. That's why it's getting my 4/5! It's a small spot in close proximity to the transport interchange. I was grabbing a train and wanted a quick coffee before I left Chatswood. I was drawn to this cafe from good reviews and also the industrial styling, plus there were plenty of people lining up and standing around the coffee store. After ordering my coffee it was quickly made and had it in no time. The first sip of the coffee was smooth, and the taste was strong but had a balanced flavour to it. The cafe also had a range of baked goods available and after seeing them, I wish I had got one! There will be a next time though, after the great service and coffee provided here.

One of the best places for coffee in Chatswood. The staff might be a little too cool for school and the lines a little long, but if you can handle that then pop down for perfectly brewed coffee in a very handy location!

Hands down the BEST coffee in Chatswood! Unfortunetly they are so popular and busy it takes a while to collect your order but if you're not in a rush it's worth the wait.

This place looks very cool. It's very packed in the morning. I went on a raining morning and had a high expectation. <br/>Here is the wired thing I found: some places have long queue while the other shops have zero coffee takers, unlike north Sydney or CBD where every coffee place has customers more or less.<br/>So maybe my expectation was too high and a bit disappointed.<br/>Firstly the menu says cold drip but it's actually cold brew. Specialised coffee place hardly make this kind of confusion. So I ordered a latte instead.<br/>While waiting, I found a pager for many types of coffee beans. But I didn't know I have these choices.<br/>The latte was a bit milky and somehow watery for the first sip.<br/>To be fair it's not bad at all. My coffee taste was too spoiled at CBD and surry hills.<br/>

Good hipster coffee, but wish they didn't have a surcharge for taking credit cards--it's 2016...time to go paperless.  When I'm feeling up for the walk down from the Zenith to get a good flat white, this is the place I go.  Also conveniently located right on the way out of the train station if that is how you're getting in or out of Chatswood.

This is a great addition to a really up and coming foodie hub. As I was walking past, my attention was first drawn by some pretty sweet tunes playing - louder than your standard 'mums and bubs' cafes. I then saw a swarm of people surrounding the entrance; waiting for their coffee. It's rare to see this much of a buzz around what is virtually a hole in the wall coffee shop. I couldn't help myself, I had to try it. <br/><br/>I told the barista what my favourite type of coffee was - a strong flat white - and asked them to choose the bean, and do their thang. I was not disappointed. The coffee was on point! The owner Rollo was a great asset to the place as well, so if you're in the area, definitely stop in for a coffee and a chat!

Only had the cold brew here but it was great! Apparently Toby's Estate. Quite robust and strong. Loved it. The baristas were also very friendly. Will return to try their milk coffee.

This is a cute little nook at Chatswood railway station, where they've done a great job of creating a welcoming space - albeit tiny - out of some pretty ordinary raw material. My latte was good, creamy and smooth, and the service flowed well.

Looked good but my coffee was made wrong even though she repeated my order just before making it. Bit weak too...seemed a bit hurried. Pulled pork sandwich was bland.

Big fan of this place. My coffee comes fast and is consistently great - all i need for my morning coffee! Bravo guys! Will be back again soon.

Cannot agree more with the review below. I decide to try this place out because there's only one person in front of me in the line. I ended up missing two trains because they were slow and the coffee is burning hot.

IMPRESSIVE!. My new local. These guys pump, and I mean really pump. Every more the que is 20 deep but they manage to get through it very efficiently and whats more important is that the coffee is great! My Flatwhites come out textured well and hot! Congrats guys and keep up the good work. Youve got me hooked :D

Long wait when the queue is not ThAT long!. I get coffee occasionally from this funky coffee place as the quality is considered 7/10 when the right person do it well. Today as I still have 8 minutes to spare before the train come, I decided to get my usual coffee as there were only 2 coffee orders in front of mine. <br/>Half way with their orders, the two baristas decided to do something else on the stove behind them ..... and eventually I ended up missing my train! The coffee I get is burning hot!!! It's definitely 1/10 today.<br/>I just want to say if u plan to do a coffee business at a train station, please make sure that ur service is up to speed and be consistent with the quality.<br/><br/>Unhappy customer

Coffee - amazing. Just had a Sumatra long black and it was just so delicious, I wanted to gulp it down. And so cheap as well. People are so friendly, I think this will be my daily regular.
