Review Hakata-maru Ramen Chatswood - Chatswood

Shawn Francis
Decent ramen. Not the best I have had but definitely above average. A small team who get through the orders quickly. Go for the signatures hakatamon ramen. The karage chicken is very good as well. Chicken and prawn dumplings can be given a miss. Bit of a draft and chill even when seated inside

Soup is full of flavour and ramen is cooked to perfect texture. However gyoza is not great at all, the wrapper is thick and doughy while the filling is lack of flavour. Definately expected it to be better than frozen supermarket stuff

My first time visit to @hakatamonramen. There won’t much option for Chicken Ramen. So I ordered the one and only choice on the menu was the Wonton Shoyu Ramen (Soy Sauce Broth Ramen with Chicken and Prawn Wonton). Yummy Taste 8/10.

This place is great, the ramen is Fantastic. Better value and taste than Ippudo. The tables are a bit sticky but the Ramen makes up for it. Highly recommend if you want Ramen and are in Chatswood (My favourite is the Hakatamon special tonkotsu!)

I used to love this place. But today's experience was very poor which led me to believe that the management has changed. First of all, the noodle was not cooked properly. As you can see in one of the photos, the noodles were clumped up together. The black fungus was also not prepared well. As shown in the photo, you can see that they've left the ending bits and was not cut properly, leaving a big piece in the bowl. When I told the staff about the clumped up noodles, she didn't seem to care. She gave me looks while I repeated myself and finally she rudely asked "so do you want another one?" The fact that she didn't acknowledge the poor quality of the food and their shortcoming was very disappointing. The soup base also seemed to have changed which appeared to more oily. The way they've prepared the pork also seemed to have changed, they are thick pieces rather than layers of rolled pork cut into thin pieces. This broke the balance and made the whole bowl very fatty. No chance I would come again.

Very satisfied for a hidden ramen place. They do offer kids ramen for $7. Small place make sure you will be prepared for the waiting list on dinner time

Delicious Japanese Ramen in their menu. Make sure to try their Dandan Tonkutso Ramen. A perfect blend of tasty and well balanced broth with delectable toppings. Prices are very affordable as well.

Been here many times but last night was a bad experience. Two ramen bowls that we ordered were filled with j pork fat. $18/bowl for just noodles and pork fat 😒

This was our favourite ramen place in chatswood - until we went there tonight and discovered the menu has changed so kakuni is no longer available as an addition to the ramen. That was really the only thing that set this place apart, and the best thing about it. Terrible decision! We also had the staff literally packing up the restaurant around us - at 8.30pm. Chairs being put on tables and the mop being brought out filling the space with the smell of cleaning products. Really not good.

My favourite place for ramen! Opposite the RSL club and very close to Chatswood interchange. Their teriyaki chicken rice is so delicious too! Must try!

Best tonkotsu base ramen i have experienced in Australia.. i love kakuni and for them to offer kakuni tonkotsu ramen is awesome! Especially with kaedama (extra noodles) for just $1! Great value, great atmosphere, great staff, and most of all great ramen. Highly recommend this ramen bar. I cant wait for winter when hot ramen on a cold day will be bliss.

Beautiful delicious food and fast efficient service. So glad we found this place, we will definitely return.

Still the best tasting ramen I can find in Sydney. Please open a new shop near the CBD :)

The best Ramen in our area! Love the spicy miso/soy ramen!
Alison Lee
I'll have one of everything thanks! Everything is delicious. Especially the pork belly ramen, OMG! Sooooo tasty. Truly happy food.
Petrina Yow
Their pork belly ramen was yummy!! The service was great. Definitely worth coming back into the city just for this. I'm surprised they are in a food court & not in a restaurant. Great value for money

Great tonkotsu ramen ! very busy but worth waiting. Good waiters !

Love the hakatamaru tonkotsu ramen I miss the one at Market City in Sydney

Best Ramen, best service😍😍😍

You guys serve the best tonkotsu ramen ever! I can't find it elsewhere! Been craving for it every now and then

One of the best ramen I've had so far! Not too salty but tasty broth. And noodle is cooked really well, very good texture.

Excellent food/service all the time. Highly recommended 👍

Best delicious authentic Ramen at reasonable price

Great ramen and 5* service!!! These boys can be stranger behind the counter for me but they deliver an exceptional service and very serious about their ramen quality and taste. While waiting for my ramen I was caught on a phone for a while and came back to them and one of the guy from kitchen mention he will make me another one very quickly an the rest of the team agree. I was speechless cuz they don't have to do it and I was happy to take the old one yet they assure me it won't take long and they wanted me to enjoy their ramen at its best. What a dedicated team!! Thank you very much and yes I do enjoy your ramen very much up to the last drop of the yummy broth.

A delicious ramen taste exactly like I ate in Japan.
Aimee.
If you’re looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant which makes delicious ramen, this is the place for you. All of their dishes were amazing but the ramen was a stand out. Great service as well.
Eunifoodie
Their portions are quite generous here and the broth is very flavourful. I really like the shoyu soup base as it wasn’t too heavy but still very flavourful. The staff are pretty questionable here. Have gotten straight up ignored a few times when wanting to ask something. Service used to be a lot better.
Wandrovert
Loved the ramen. It has many variety to choose from. And I love how some condiments are available so you can customise your ramen. Broth is amazing and very tasty. Will definitely go back. 👌🏻

Signature ramen and braised pork (kakuni) taste different than usual and the portion of braised pork now full of fat, usually proportional in perfect cut and also didn’t well marinate.
FoodandWhatever
It's not the usual tonkotsu broth, its made with Bonito 👍 interesting flavor! And the ramen actually goes with the green vege 😋

I went to eat here recently with high expectations and having raved to my dad about how good the ramen is and was quite disappointed with the $18 ramen that I ordered (the signature ramen) as well as the karaage chicken we ordered.<br/><br/>I think at the price point and rating of this restaurant, it is reasonable to have high expectations for every component (all of which are equally important) of a bowl of ramen to be up to standard. <br/>I've never had a issue in the 4-5 times I've eaten here however the pork that I was served in my ramen was so poor quality I was shocked.. I've been to those fast-food ramen restaurants like Tenkomori in the city where the dishes are half the price of this ramen at a "well rated restaurant" and have never gotten such fatty pork slices which were 80% fat and 20% actual meat. Usually the pork is in a good ratio/assorted strips of fat and meat but what I was served was mostly just fat and was disgusting. I nibbled off the small portion of actual meat and threw away the rest. The photo I took doesn’t really show what a thick slice of mostly fat my chashu was. <br/><br/>I usually also quite enjoy the tonkotsu broth but it seemed less flavourful and thin compared to previous visits. From memory, I really enjoyed how the broth was a good balance between not too thick or thin and full of flavour.<br/><br/>Similar I've had no complains about the karaage chicken in previous visits however this time the batter (karaage should only have a light coating that is thin when cooked and provides a light crunch) was thick, oily and bland. <br/><br/>My conclusion is that they must have changed their chef or cut costs in the months between my most recent and the previous visit... disappointing and I don't think I'll be going back. <br/><br/>Time to move on to better ramen places......

Hands down. The best ramen in Sydney.
Erika-Anne
I had signature ramen & bonito shoyu. Hakatamaru ramen is tasty but look different from picture of menu which is a bit surprised. The soup is yummy and Kotteri style. Staff seemes a bit careless, split soup on my jeans...I know it's busying but should be more carefully.

over-rated for sure

Been meaning to try this for ages and it did not disappoint! Relatively cheap/reasonable prices and great tonkotsu ramen. Flavourful, and well cooked noodles that was full of depth and flavour. Chashu was nothing special. Loved that you could self-serve your own condiments of raw garlic, pickled veges and chilli oil etc. Keen to be back.

Very satisfying feed. It's on the expensive side for ramen ($19), but it was still really nice, and service was reasonably quick. I put it in my top 3 of ramen places I've been to.

Hakata Maru in Chatswood is an epic noodle eatery and a place to try sooner rather than later. Classic style Japanese eatery, super casual and efficiency at its best. God seated quite quickly and priority to order not far behind. We had booked a table for 6+ people so would recommend booking for your visit. <br/>It’s really all about the ramen but make sure you arrive early (before 6pm) for the happy hour and snack on dumplings and chicken karrage. Best to give the edamame a miss. Not particularly enjoyable for me on this visit. <br/><br/>Now to the main event - the signature ramen. It was my first trip here but others in my group - let’s call them noodle connoisseurs - have been here many times. High quality noodles and delicious broth also means it won’t be my last visit either. <br/><br/>Loads of choice for ramen including, white tonkotsu ($12), clear shoyu ($14), miso tonkotsu ($14.50), dandan (spicy $15.50) and the signature supreme ramen ($18.50). Five stars for Hakata Maru in Chatswood ⭐️

Service was quick, clean and we stepped in when they literally just opened its doors so it was quiet. The entries were great, I especially loved their gyoza, it had the thinnest crispiest bottom layer and top-outer shell was so soft...<br/><br/>Read: purplecuriosity.wordpress.com/2019/07/03/hakata-maru-ramen/

This place was once a favourite but somehow each experience becomes progressively worse. The food never arrives on time - always one person is left wondering where their dish is when the rest of the table is served and the servings are smaller. Service is sub par. Really dissapointing.

Best ramen in Chatswood!!<br/>Around 55$ for two people<br/>The dim sum starter is full of filling. <br/><br/>Ramen broth is quite salty but the pork is amazing. <br/>Definitely come back!
Jesslikestoeat
The ramen here was yummy as were the steamed baos, especially the kimchi chicken bao. I ordered the chashu shoyu ramen which came with pork belly slices, seaweed, egg, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts and corn. <br/><br/>Service was fast and portions were of average size.
Emily
My go-to ramen shop in Chatswood. Reliable and tasty. Lovely broth, not too thick but not so diluted either. A good balance, especially if you don’t like your broths too heavy. The sides are nice as well, like the gyozas and karaage chicken, but portion sizes have become smaller.
Jess Cheng
We were told that the shoyu ramen comes with 2 slices of pork and a seasoned egg. The egg never came. And they said later that it doesn’t come with an egg. Misleading customers!
YARM
Tucked away near Chatswood station, there is something about Hakata-Maru Ramen’s noodles that make them absolutely simply sensational. It might be the delicious perfectly balanced rich, milky pork broth, or the thin straight noodles, or the gooey egg, but Hakata Maru is my favourite place in Sydney for a bowl of ramen. <br/><br/>For only $11.80 you can get a White Tonkotsu and add $2.90 for a seasoned egg. Compared to other upper market ramen, this is very reasonable and I would 100% recommend this place for Hakata ramen (ramen which originates from the Hakata district of Fukuoka city in Kyushu, has a milky tonkotsu broth and rather thin, resilient noodles). YARM!!!

I went there on a cold night, I usually have my ramen in the city, but I decided to try one in Chatswood. And wowww I tried their signature dish which was amazing! So tasty! Staff was very friendly too! Loved it
Naomi Wu
Good ramen! I enjoyed the broth, but it's not my favourite. Would come back for their side dishes as they taste quite nice. This restaurant was a little hard to find but it was worth the trouble.
Elizabeth Lim
Really like the ramen. Been here a couple of times, the bowl isn’t huge, but reasonable portion! Soup is rich and tasty, only suggestion i would make is if the noodles were firmer and more al dente (but that’s personal preference)<br/><br/>Dumplings were small - tasted average. <br/><br/>Service is friendly as well.
Food
Decent place here. Came by and had the the DanDan Tonkotsu dish which was pretty good in terms of proportion (or maybe the soup helped made me feel full). Quick service. Would come back again.

Hakata-Maru Special Tonkatsu | 5/5⭐ | $<br/>.<br/>@hakatamaruramen serves up my favourite #tonkatsuramen in town 👌 It's a perfect balance of creamy soup but not too thick, strong garlic, chilli and tonkatsu flavours without being too salty, #noodles have bite and the #chashu, egg, wood ear and shallots give it that crunch while keeping you full. And it's not super expensive 😍
Amanda Lim
Love the white ramen here, the soup tastes very clean and not briney. Came here 3 times in 2 weeks. I tried their signature ramen and with the sauces that came with it, it was a little too flavorsome for me (but that's just me).<br/><br/>The karaage is really good, havent had a good kaarage like that in Sydney. Staff are friendly.<br/><br/>Feels authenticly japanese.
Christine
Finally found a Japanese restaurant that served Taiyaki (the fish shaped pancake filled with red bean paste) but was only disappointed. The service was terrible with us having to ask for tissues repeatedly before finally being given tissues, having to ask for a spoon after given the ramen and plates for the entree and despite having asking for dessert to be served after the meal, it was delivered during the middle of our meal. The noodles were average in taste and the broth was incredibly oily. <br/><br/>However, the entrees were incredibly delicious. The gyoza were incredibly small but deliciously crispy and was worth its cheap price ($3.20) and the chicken karaage was tender on the Inside and perfectly fried. <br/><br/>To summarise, would definitely recommend trying the entrees to anyone interested in the restaurant! However, I would choose not to come back again.

We live no where near this place and come to Chatswood just for the Ramen. <br/><br/>I normally order the pork ramen with black garlic . It’s super delicious and warms the heart each time . The broth is delicious , not too salty or thick . You can ask for the noodles to come harder too. The service is very sweet and you can make alterations to your liking . <br/><br/>The only disappointment is the accompanying menu items like the bau ‘s and gyozas. We no longer order these and go straight for a good hearty bowl of ramen!

Visited Sydney for a short break, and my friend who lives in Chatswood, recommended me to try Hakata-Maru. It was gooooood!. A casual japanese restaurant, on ground floor of a corporate building close to Chatswood train station and opposite the RSL. I always love a restaurant where they provide you with a basket underneath your table for you to put your handbags and jackets. I always feel a little more friendliness from the service provided.

If you’re looking for real traditional ramen then this is perfect! The broth is porky and creamy as well as the egg which is boiled to perfection. The gyoza pieces were a little small but very fresh and tasty. The portion sizings are reasonable as well. Lovely and polite Japanese waiters/waitresses and chefs. Would definitely come again.
HungryBabesSugarApe
Had the White Tonkotsu while the missus had the Hataka-Mary special. Both were delish with plenty of flavour and nice porky-soupy broth! They have kids menu too if your young ‘uns find the standard one too much. <br/><br/>👍🏻<br/><br/>Definitely be back. Come early as the place fills up quick during peak times.

Ordered:<br/>1. Black garlic ramen - average to good (3.5/5), I do like their egg which is not too raw and full of flavour. However, this dish did not give me the wow I can’t wait to be back and order it again feeling <br/>2. Japanese red bean waffle - way too oily and did not taste good at all (1/5), do not order this <br/><br/>Will I go back: yes

Arrive early to avoid office lunch time rush. The place is quite nice and cosy. We tried the special Hakata Tonkatsu Ramen (be careful, it's spicy) , Chasu Shoyu Ramen and some gyozas. The pork chasu was so soft, nicely flavoured and had nice seared taste. The gyozas are small and not what you normally see in restaurants but they were juicy and nice with quite a bit of veggies inside. I think they are made in store. Will come back to try other dishes.<br/><br/>"The soup reminds me of when I was in Japan, the lovely street food experience." was what my partner said.<br/><br/>It would be better experience if our tea was brewed in a small pot instead of the Japanese cups. The cups held the heat too much and were already super hot before the tea was done and they didn't cool down quickly (we couldn't hold the cup at all and had to wait for the cups to coold down) . Our tea cooled down so much by the time we can hold our cups...

Pretty good ramen with nice soup base. Noodles are thinner than in other ramen restaurants (which is not necessarily a bad thing), but unfortunately mine felt a bit undercooked. I'll give them another try to see if I was just unlucky this one time.<br/><br/>The karage bao was quite nice, with the crunchiness of the fried chicken contrasting quite nicely with the softness of the bun, and the kimchi and slightly spicy sauce was quite nice. Plenty of water and condiments available, although the placement of the ordering station close to the door is a poor design, the line to order and pay seems to block entry to the door.
Pinicolada
Serving sizes quite small. Did not fill me up and I am not a big eater. Prices don’t justify the small servings. I ordered the original ramen and the meat was mainly fat.

This place closed at 8.30 PM - we arrived around 8.15. The staff told us kindly that they will close soon, however, did not put any pressure on us.<br/><br/>There are four of us, and we all ordered Hakata-Maru Tonkastsu. It is one of the best Sydney that I have tried in Sydney. The garlic smells very good as well! The Karage is unique as they offered soy sauce and spicy mayo instead of normal mayo.<br/><br/>Recommended!<br/><br/>Came here as I saw @unagizzz post on Instagram.

Ordered the Black Tonkatsu it was amazing!!! And by far one of my favorite Ramen restaurants, the broth was balanced. and the topping was just right, always happy when i take a trip over to Chatties and stop by.
Ann
Ordered the signature Hakata-Maru Ramen, the pork was a bit dry and chewy, and the broth was oily, but at least it wasn’t too salty which was good. <br/>The karage was very small pieces.<br/>Overal, it was over priced.<br/>Dinning area was clean and tidy.
Leon
Hakata-Maru Ramen is a popular Japanese ramen bar in Chatswood which offers a variety of broth and other side dishes. The casual restaurant features a mixture of bar seats and proper low tables and the open kitchen allows me to peek at the young chefs preparing my meal.<br/><br/>I ordered their signature black tonkotsu and Kakuni bun. The braised pork belly and pork slices were overcooked and hard. And I feel the restaurant could do more to avoid the boar taint. Otherwise, the broth was savoury and delicious although it was marginally too oily for my preference.
Pignic_
This place is one of my favourite ramen restaurants in Sydney! It is slightly hidden away on the quiet side of Chatswood, so it might be a little bit hard to find. Their 'Black Tonkotsu' (Black Garlic) is absolutely delicious and cannot be missed. The flavours are so strong, amazing broth and noodles are cooked perfectly! I have also tried their 'Shoyu' ramen, which is also very tasty. If you're after a small dish to share, Gyoza is always a good choice. All of their prices are very reasonable which is a bonus!<br/><br/>Feel free to follow me on instagram @pignic_ for more foodie adventures.

I love Asian noodle soup but most of them are loaded with MSG! I hate the dry mouth and thirsty feeling all day long afterwards. <br/><br/>I had their Hakata-Maru's Signature Tonkatsu, it come with black sesame oil and a soup spoonful of red chilli paste. To me, it wasn't very spicy but add to a great balance of flavours. The Tonkatsu broth was not heavy. It has a clean taste and did not smell "porky"!<br/><br/>The only downsides for me is that the charsu they used was quite fatty! And at $17.80 it was quite expensive!<br/><br/>It's so great to find Hakata-Maru's broth has minimum amount of MSG. If you also have low MSG tolerance, I highly recommend this little gem.<br/>

Our favourites are the karaage chicken rice bowl and white tonkotsu ramen, these are the top two on the list and they always hit the spot, so good!
Brunonono...
It's still a cold raining night...<br/><br/>So to break the hot pot routine time for a hearty ramen to shake off all that misery....<br/><br/>I knew the name was familiar, think I've seen this place in China town somewhere...couldn't put my finger on it but oh well we were in Chatswood and we wanted Ramen so Wah La! <br/><br/>Okay the Miso Tonkatsu ramen! Noodles very elastic...or in Chinese we call it "teeth bouncing" who invented this phrase and how high were they...? Topping wise, Id say okay bit stingy...I mean I've seen other places be more generous in regards to bamboo shoots and corn; oh and not a slice of Chashu but hey the scattered traces of diced braised pork belly was different - Id say an acceptable. After all Ramen is about the noodles, soup and bamboo shoots; yes the one topping I care about...Now the soup! Are you being sly and putting Butter in your miso soup Hakata...! Honestly I can't even quite remember how long ago I've seen butter as a topping but recollection wise, I do recall the best miso ramen I've had in Japan was topped with a thick slice of butter - so you win Childhood memory points...side note*** if you didn't actually put butter then kuddos to you for making me taste butter! <br/><br/>The other was the Signature Hakata Ramen, dangerous times, when I see "Signature" on the menu cause your almost setting yourself up to fail...or artificially giving yourself a higher bar to jump over! With the utmost courtesy and I believe she did a great job was the waitress who I inquisitively asked what was the difference between the signature and the regular tonkatsu soup which she replied with it's the black garlic ramen with more topping to which I say I appreciate your honesty! <br/><br/>So anyways...yeah just a black garlic tonkatsu ramen with more toppings! I wouldn't say it's "Signature" as there's nothing that really differentiates it from the regular soup; however it did come with the straight noodles "which id simply call egg-less noodles" are they better than egg ramen noodles, nada but "authenticity" yes! <br/><br/>So on the soups! Wonderful, magical and I wouldn't ask for anything else on a night like this. Egg Noodles great lovely cooked to that al dente state. Egg-less straight noodles, cooked very well too but it's just inferior to Egg Noodles in terms of taste...I mean the best ramen noodles used Duck Egg...maybe that's my biased to egg noodles? <br/><br/>Many many criticism, but look I certainly feel like<br/>you surpassed my expectations or maybe it was just the right weather but I may have to come again to do quality control...?

Absolutely need to improve their customer service.  The lead waitress ( with long hair) was atrociously rude when she tried asking us to leave and wait outside for another table. This was when we had been comfortably seated by her other colleague. She ruined our appetite to dine at the restaurant and we decided to pack and leave. There's no point arguing with someone like her on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. And we definitely won't return to dine in a place with such huge lack of respect for diners.  Do improve your staff's service to patrons as your food isn't of great quality either with greasy and salty broth.  Glad we are never coming back again.

We wanted ramen and figured that we'd try here for a change instead of going to Ippudo all the time. The place is nice and cosy, small but enough tables inside that it's not too busy if you come during a weekday lunch. <br/><br/>We ordered the Black Garlic ramen and the Karaage Curry (both $12.80). The ramen was super tasty, I really enjoyed the tonkotsu soup and the garlic flavour. The curry was delicious, a bit thinner than I would've liked but it was a good portion and the Karaage was great. Fast service and good prices, definitely will be back more often!

I went to Hakata-Maru around 5:45 pm. At the beginning, the waitress with semi-blonde/black long hair treat me respectively and conducted me to the big table (could seat 8-10 people). At that time there were only FIVE customers in the restaurant and I did not want to seat closely to a lady. So I moved one seat further in order to get more space. Then the semi-blonde/black kong hair waitress used her index finger point to the menu (on the table ) and said: " This is your seat and you can't seat here !". I asked her why and she replied:"more customers will come later and you are affect my arrangement !".  "There are too many seats available now and even if there is a large group of customer come in they can seat other large tables" I replied. She insisted that I have to sit what she told me without any respect and I followed.  I ordered the Shoyu Chashu ramen and tasted nothing special than any food court ramen. ONE BIG THING I need to mention is they use something called "BONE POWDER" with hot water to create their ramen broth rather than using real bones cooking for hours to minimize their cost. They should feel disgraceful about cheating on customers. I really have no idea guys says" this is the best ramen I have ever had etc." Probably they have never been to Japan and eat real ramen. I would recommend Manpuku Chatswood, Ryo's north Sydney and Yasaka CBD if you guys wanna try good quality ramen. Overall, this is a place waitress does not know how to treat customers respectively with FAKE ramen broth.

Amazing ramen with fresh ingredients and tasty tonkotsu broth, prepared with passion and good service. Their various ramen options are well flavoured and authentic

I visited Sydney 3 time in last 9 months on Business. I am put up at the Meriton and office is 799 Pacific Highway, so it's quite close. But never got a chance to go here. Then one day when there was no one to accompany for lunch, I went here. I didn't know what to Order as we don't have a lot of Asian cuisine in India.<br/>I ordered the Tonkatsu. It was very good - the soup as well as Pork. Only thing I don't like about all Asian restaurants is that the portion size is too big. I have never seen anyone finish the whole thing. I hate wastage of food more than my money going waste.

I was devastated when Hakata-Maru Haymarket closed down, however happy to hear that the Chatswood branch was still running so I could get my ramen mix. This is definitely my favourite ramen in Sydney, the black garlic tonkotsu broth is my go-to, and it's very reasonably priced too!

<br/>Updated(Nov 2018)<br/><br/>We went this store occasionally, and felt the soup is getting weaker.<br/>Our last visit, we felt the same. Moreover, the soup wasn't hot enough. Water and spoons weren't on the table (all gone) and they didn't fill again.<br/><br/>We are over with this outlet. We will try the other one in North Sydney shop, but not in Chatswood.<br/><br/>_______________<br/>Hakata maru in Market city in China town was my favourite one. Unfortunately it has been closed due to building redevelopment. So, I tried Hakatamaru in Chatswood if they are good as market city.<br/><br/>The price for white tonkotsu is $1 more than Market city but still reasonable. However, the soup was better at Market city one, which was more creamy, thick and strong flavour. The two shops in different places serve slightly different flavour is kinda disappointing, but I'll still try another bowl at Chatswood, as soup would change (slightly) time to time due to ingredients quality and season.<br/><br/>The table I say is sticky, it's needed throughly cleaning I suppose....<br/><br/>At this stage, I may prefer to have Marukame udon (Sister shop) if I'm going to quick meal in Chatswood...

The best ramen in Sydney. <br/><br/>First off, the noodles had a good thickness and a bouncy bite. Most places can't seem to get it right, it's either too hard or too soft. Next is the broth, their tonkotsu is mind blowing! Nice, thick and flavoursome.  The chashu was super tender and tasty. And lastly, it was great value for money. Would definitely recommend it for anyone wishing to have good ramen.

This place is great. It has a buzzing atmosphere and the ramen is incredibly tasty. <br/>I had the Hakata-maru tonkotsu - it was rich and nutty and just the right level of spiciness. I thought the price at $17.80 seemed a bit steep, but it was a generous portion or pork and other extras like the seasoned egg.

My pick of the ramen offers in Chatswood (including the more famed Ippudo). I love the different style of noodles they offer, and both the tonkotsu & Spicy Dan Dan broth. This time I got the Dan Dan, when it came out all you can see is a blob of Spicy miso on top of a sea of red Soup, but once you dig through the sea of red, there's a good mix of char shu, mushroom, bamboo shoots, fungus, corn & noodles. The Soup was a good Spicy, not extreme so you can still taste the food. Also got a side of karage chicken, which was juicy but not too oily. They do a lunch deal for the weekday work crowd, but I went on the weekend this time, but it's still worth paying the full price for.

I ordered the basic white pork broth ramen and as usual, I loved it.<br/><br/>The broth was rich and creamy without being overly thick or oily. It's a real trick to get the broth right in ramen. It's half the battle and I tip my hat to Hakata-Maru for getting as close as they have to winning it.<br/><br/>The toppings were basic but enjoyable. The crispiness of the wood ear mushroom and the bamboo shoots with their customary crunch are a pleasant balancer as they cut through the broth. The slices of pork could have been a tad more tender but that is probably just me being fussy. <br/><br/>I also ordered a soft-boiled egg to go with my ramen and suffice as to say, it was perfect. The eruption of the yolk as it joined forces with the broth was divine. I suspect my wife may have been looking at me funny as we were eating....<br/><br/>The noodles, the other half of the ramen challenge, didn't disappoint. I prefer my noodles to be straight and slightly firm. No soft noodles for me, al dente all the way thank you very much. I greedily ordered two second servings which left me bursting. I think that I will go for civility next time and just order the one.<br/><br/>At $10.50 for the basic tonkotsu dish, the price is extremely reasonable. The all-Japanese staff have always offered me an authentically professional service which I very much appreciate.<br/><br/>Conveniently located close to Chatswood Station, this little gem of a place has become my go to spot for a good ramen lunch in Sydney.

This is the first ramen shop I visited in Sydney and it's just another very average one. The gyoza is absolutely not Japanese style but rather Chinese style to me. Not sure if this ramen shop originated from Japan and it could pass as a noodle shop.

Dayem son! Ordered the pork bau to start and it was soft, tender and extremely generous with meat. Then came the black garlic ramen. Mushrooms, sliced pork and tiny pieces of garlic swimming in a sea of brothy goodness. Will definitely be returning! No photo to show as I ate it too quickly.

After hearing Sunday mass on a cold evening in Chatswood, I suddenly felt a need for some slurping of warm soup and noodles. Good thing, my sister's boyfriend took us to this Ramen house which was only around 5 minutes away from the station, making it convenient. The place was a bit small and a bit cramped up but I guess they prioritize functionality and efficiency. I ordered the Hakata-maru tonkotsu simply because it said special on the menu. The soup was subtle but had a variety of spice, saltiness, and warmth which woked harmoniously with the perfectly cooked, firm noodles, and vegetables. You can modify your food according to your preference in noodles, soup, heat, and other toppings. I eould.highlu recommend this place.

I'm not always a Ramen person, but every time I come go Hakata-Maru Chatswood I am always satisfied. The service is friendly and fast. The menu is varied (if you don't want Ramen there are other options) and the serving size is good too. Expect to come back here, it'll become a favourite.

It wasn't my fault. I had scans and stuff which meant that I hadn't eaten since dinner last night. And there was Hakata-Maru Ramen. I ordered the Miso Tonkotsu Ramen. It was good. Very good. I would like to say I'll be back but my Doctor may have other plans for me.

Visited this place in my attempt to try find the ichiran of Sydney. First of all it's a decent ramen place with nice decor. The noodles were perfectly textured and cooked well. However, the let down was the broth; it was way too greasy. I almost vomited because of the grease in the broth but at least it wasn't salty.

Found is ramen place in Chatswood. Very popular. Staff are friendly and I really like the fact that they are all Japanese :) Their Gyoza is very nice, the filling is really tender and juicy! Love their tonkotsu soup base. Rich and packed with so much flavour! (Though it's not as rich as Ryo or Gumshara.) Their tantan ramen has the spiciness but I reckon there's still something missing (if you've tried the tantan ramen in Goshu Ramen Tei, you'll see what I mean). Overall, love this place! Good service, good food, fair price! Highly recommended!

Hakata Maru is one of my favourite places to get ramen in Sydney. Whenever someone asks me for a good place for ramen I always recommend Hakata Maru, they have a diverse variety of noodles and soups it can take forever to choose. But no matter which one you get you can always gurantee it will be quality.

Was quite a nice place and still has the authentic Japanese Ramen flavour to it.Great place to eat, especially lunch! Overall This place is a must try and customer service was great!

Value for money, very decent reman place. The noodle soup is awesome, not the best Japanese food ever had, but definitely good.<br/><br/>Noodles are around $10-17, unfortunately on our first visit they don't have chicken karaage with wedges, dumplings are fresh and juicy:-)<br/><br/>Again worth trying.

Rich, creamy and thick soup base with generous serving of springy noodles, I'm sold. It's probably one of the best ramen experience I've ever had, the super affordable pricing is an added bonus! It's such a satisfying meal that we have nothing to nitpick at all. Well maybe there is, why is there no other outlet elsewhere. One more reason to visit Chatswood again for my next trip.

Not hard to see (or taste) why this joint is quite popular, located on the ground floor of an office tower certainly helps. <br/><br/>Prices have crept up slightly (if i am not mistaken) but still good value, considering the portion and that they dont scrimp on ingredients. Much prefer outlets to adjust prices rather than portion sizes. <br/><br/>We only ordered their tonkotsu (pork) based ramens, not the soy or miso based ones. Noodles were on point (see pics on my dineline), soup was rich, medium thick, marinated egg gooey on the inside. Best thing was they were served properly hot. Hate lukewarm ramen.

Not a bad ramen place although i find the tonkotsu to be not as strong as other joints (ie ippudo). The gyoza skin is too thick for my liking, wont recommend that. Noodle is ok and can be done to your firmness. Overall other places are better imo

Yummy chewy ramen noodles in a broth that's not overly thick or salty, gyoza's however we will probably not get the next time round, they don't look like the traditional gyoza's you get. We also went as a group for my birthday and my friends got me a cake, when the staff brought it out, they turned off the lights in our section and had the tune happy birthday playing...I was shocked and thought the electricity was out hahaa, I didn't know they got me a cake. But what impressed me was not only did the restaurant do that, but they served my cake on a platter of fresh fruits as well. We all didn't expect that and it was a wonderful experience.

One of my favorite ramen places in Sydney, never disappoint. To me this is a cheaper and better version of Ippudo. Love their spicy veggie pickle! Extremely friendly service too.

To be honest, when I first came to visit Hakata-Maru Ramen, I got lost. This inconspicuous restaurant is not visible from Chatswood station and you would be lucky to notice it if you caught a bus from the bus interchange directly outside or opposite the restaurant....<br/><br/>This is probably one of the more authentic Japanese restaurants that I have been to - pre-made ramen is stored inside a wooden box, waiting to be boiled and served to customers. Even Ryo's just stores their ramen in large plastic boxes outside their kitchen. Also, their pork cutlets and karaage chicken appeared to be double-fried - i.e. pre-fried once beforehand, and left in a pile in front of the deep fryer until ordered, at which point the pork/chicken is deep-fried again to give it a crispy coating...

This place is a good alternative to the more expensive IPPPUDO at The District, Chatswood. Tonkotsu broth is flavorsome and rich. A bit tight on the soup though and will charge $5 for extra.

I've been here twice, both with my youngest son before a school event, who after visiting is now dedicated to Ramen. This place is the most authentic I have been in Sydney. Handmade noodles, amazing broth and watching them prepare the Ramen with attention at the bar is fantastic. In fact I have a Ramen craving now as I write this so it shows how good it is.
ChubbyBlue
This is one of my favourite ramen restaurant. The soup of the ramen is not too thick and oily. All elements on the bowl are well balanced and well cooked.
Kerri
Really enjoyed my ramen here. The soup base was quite tasty but I don't eat ramen enough to have too much for comparison. My friends who I came with however, both do and they also loved it.

Good place for a fast meal when craving ramen. Hakata-Maru Ramen isn't far from Chatswood station but it's located away from most of the other restaurants. I find the meat in their ramen delicious. The broth isn't as rich or thick as I'd hoped and the noodles used feel different from the ones at Gumshara and Ryo's. That being said, I have found the ramen there better than the other joints I've tried so far in Chatswood.

Popped in for lunch today around 2pm and it wasnt as busy. Order and pay at the door and then take  a seat and wait. We got served some table water as well as little bowls of garden salad. Then I got my Prawn tonkatsu and my partner got the pork. This place has more thinner style noodles but with a really nice broth. They had more variety when it came to what sort of meat. Two new options which i have never seen is the prawn and deep fried chicken. My partners pork was the crumbed style but he enjoyed it. Overall, great first visit.

The good thing about this place is the price. There is better ramen out there but this is probably one of the best at the $10 price point in the CBD / Chinatown area. <br/><br/>I have a poor man's palate, so all the ramen stock i've tried always tastes full of flavour. I'm not big fan of the noodles they use here, I prefer the curly ones whilst here they use the "straight" and thin type, but its still good. If you feel like ramen for lunch, then this is the place to go.

Had the signature Raman. Soup base is really nice. The egg was tasty as well. Pork was not bad. The only thing I would suggest to improve is the soup was not enough. For ramen costs nearly 18 dollars, I expect a bigger bowl.<br/>My friend ordered a curry rice dish. The food quality was definitely good. But it was way much smaller than what it looks like on the menu.<br/>The table nested to us ordered a bun. The size is a bit bigger than a maccaroon.<br/>I think price is reasonable and the portion is not too bad. But the pictures on menu set wrong expectation.

When I first move to Chatswood, Hakata-Maru Ramen store caught my attention as a hidden gem. It is just a small restaurant hidden away from the other restaurant on the other side of the train station.<br/><br/>Upon entry into the busy little restaurant on a Thursday night, the waitresses welcomed me and got me sitting down at a side table. I had my work bag with me and they quickly got me a basket for me to put my bag in. I suppose it is a Japanese custom, as I have had that happen before a couple of times.<br/><br/>I got myself an appetiser of Gyoza and a bowl of yummylicious Hakata-Maru Tonkotsu.<br/><br/>Hakata-Maru Tonkotsu is their signature supreme ramen. It has pretty much got all the goodness of a Tonkotsu Ramen. Tonkotsu base, which means pork broth is full of awesome collagen which is good for the skin, one of the reasons I almost always get it when I go to a ramen store. Besides that, this ramen has fried garlic and shallots, giving them a unique taste as well as a dollop of chilli. This combination makes this ramen pretty unique and I would have to say, I did not know where to start with the fear of making a mess as it looks so pretty.

Best ramen we'd had in a while! The tonkotsu broth was just right and the noodles were also cooked perfectly. The service was very friendly and the prices were very reasonable given the quality of the food and drinks. A very satisfying meal!

A bit of a wait when I got there but it was worth the wait. I'm not a big fan of ramen but boy did their ramen put a smile on my face. The Hakata-Maru Tonkotsu was a bit pricy at $17.80 but if it's your first time there, you need to try their signature dish.

Hakata Ramen has brought my faith back in Tonkotsu after the disaster at my previous experience. The soup is rich but not just one dimensional that tends to be the case with the last few I have tried. It's a welcome relief to hear native Japanese chefs in the kitchen as opposed to many Korean run Japanese restaurants in Chatswood and the menu was spared of any invasion of Kim Chi!<br/><br/>The Hakata-maru was their signature ramen and at $17.80 a bowl I asked the waitress what it consisted as their was no description on their menu. The waitress was a little vague and mentioned a few condiments but what I wanted to hear was her description of perhaps several meats to justify the price. The Tonkotsu stock was complimented by a dash of black tonkotsu, chilli paste, and 5 slices of quality pork belly, 1/2 perfectly boiled egg along with the usual condiments. The ramen itself was perfectly cooked but wish there was more of it. An excellent dish worthy of their signature but the price a bit steep at $17.80. <br/><br/>The Spicy Dan Dan was well balanced without dominating the natural flavour of the soup base. <br/><br/>The gyoza filling was fresh and vibrant, the pastry a little strange almost consisting of too much rice flour but still very nice. The sauce was good and the tiny dollop of citrus puree worked well with the dumplings.<br/><br/>The kitchen brigade worked fast but was in control the whole time taking time to pay attention to more delicate things when required. The service was rushed but I cannot hold anything against them as the single waitress was swept off her feet being the order taker, server, table cleaner and register girl all while being very pleasant and friendly.

I love this place. Favourite ramen in Chatswood hands down. The prices have gone up slightly but I think they are still reasonable for the quality and serving size. Service is very swift and polite as is in most Japanese restaurants.<br/><br/>The hakatu-maru and white tonkotsu are my top choices to get, but seriously any ramen here is a winner. The pork in the kakuni was insane. So tender and just melts in your mouth. AND they are really generous with the pork too. I also really like the fact that they have this jar of (not really sure what it is exactly) veggies that you can add to the ramen. It's not much but being Korean, I love side dishes so this was a big plus actually and not something I have seen at other ramen joints.

Fantastic food quality - generous portions and one of the best ramen tastes in Sydney. Also, great service with very prompt and friendly staff!

Been to Hakata Maru few times and my poison there is the Hakata Maru Tonkotsu. The overall balance of the bowl is fantastically good. For the money, it's another level above Ippudo CBD. One point to mention is the chef took the time to stir fry the cabbage & bean sprouts instead of boiling them which showed attention to details.....<br/><br/>However the Katsu curry there is less than ordinary so unless the chef had an off day otherwise i'd steer clear and only go for the noodles.
Hello. Imnikki
I'm surprised why there are no queue for this shop. The ramen is fantastic and good value for money. Too often ramen shops offer just the basic toppings so that they can charge you an arm and leg for additional topping but with this place, there is no need for additional toppings, unless you are a big eater. The two slices of pork belly in the kakuni tonkotsu, although they don't look much, were in fact big hearty generous slices. Generous servings of wood ear mushroom and bamboo shoots too. The white and black broth were both full of flavour and the noodles were made for slurping. Excellent friendly service that are typical of ramen joints staffed by Japanese. I'm glad I discovered this hidden gem.

It took us quite long to find it, but the ramen here was really impressive. I really love their black tonkotsu and also their teriyaki chicken.

I (and a few others) ordered the house special of the Hakata-Maru Tonkotsu. It’s that one item on every menu that’s a bit of a mishmash of everything – and so this bowl of ramen has miso, garlic oil, egg, slices of fatty braised pork, scallions, crunchy fungi…it’s got a bit of everything.<br/> Surprisingly though, I would have thought that this overload of toppings would have made the bowl of ramen too rich and overwhelming, but it still worked really well. The broth was rich and full of flavour, but it didn’t leave that gluggy aftertaste that so many other thick tonkotsu broths do (I’m looking at you Gumshara Ramen).

Fast service, great results - a mini Japan in Chatswood.<br/>All my friends could do (while slurping their ramen like no tomorrow) was think aloud about how much this reminded them of their food adventures in Japan.<br/>It's not necessary to question the authenticity of the food, the taste says it all. Almost guaranteed full stomach - there was a line on a Sunday night.<br/><br/>I don't think I've been thanked this many times for quick lunch recommendations (granted, it was a group of 10).

Im shocked ! Im shocked that i only just found this recently ! The broth is so freaking delicious. Very rich and smooth. I had the Black Tonkotsu as i love garlic and as they say - once you go black you can never go back. YUM ! Only $11.80 for a good portion of ramen so its a great cheap eat and extra sides are only $2 each. Parking is a bit difficult but if you catch the train its an easy walk otherwise park in the Mandarin Centre to take advantage of the free parking (just buy something from the Asian grocery store to get your ticked validated).

Best ramen place in northern sydney. Although the price is slightly a bit more expensive than the city, haymarket foodcourt, but the deco and the service is so much better. Our favorite is the slow cooked pork belly, the pork is melt in your mouth and the tonkotsu garlic broth is just perfect!

Ramen is tops! But calamari tempura is a no go. Definitely be back for the ramen though!

Went tonight and ordered the red tonkotsu and Hakaramaru Tonkotsu ramen. Soup and noodles were authentic and tasted great, reminded me of the ones you find in Kyushu. Highly recommended.

Wonderful surprise. My husband and I just came back from Japan. And we loved Japanese Ramen: we went to Ichiran, Ippudo and the piggy Ramen shop Betsutenjin. Therefore, I was so excited when I saw 博多 this morning in Chatswood. And we were not disappointed. The soup, the toppings and the ramen were all perfect. We were especially happy about the slow cooked and pan-fried pork in the Hakata Ramen. Loved it! We' ve decided to be regular customers. :D

Got my usual black tonkotsu. It's $2 more expensive than the city store and it doesn't come with an egg either! The broth is also less garlicky :(
