Review Chef Rasa Sayang - Chatswood

Mathew Ho
Such an awesome place, they have moved from Victoria Ave in Chatswood to Willoughby. This is take away only now so please keep that in mind. They offer a great variety of Indonesian and south east Asian food. You would want to eat it while its hot, there is a park across the road if you want to eat immediately

Very best and authentic taste of Malaysian hawker food in Sydney!

Underwhelming experience for me - the current location only offers takeaway or delivery options, and the food is average (probably due to takeaway and some food actually taste better when served fresh). The noodles in Dried Pan Mee were a tad too thick and the coconut rice in Nasi Lemak was a tad too dry. The Chicken Rendang was delicious. I have been a patron of Chef Rasa Sayang even before it was relocated to Willoughby from Chatswood. I do hope that they continue to improve and do well.

I loved this restaurant when it was in Chatswood. Now only take-away is available in Willoughby. Menu is limited. A number of items were not available when we went. Suggest ordering online and do pickup. We arrived not realising it was takeaway only. Food was ok but not the same as when cooked fresh in the previous Chatswood restaurant.

Great Malaysian restaurant. Decent pricing and large portions. They have a varity of dishes, and most dishes taste great, so highly recommend trying out different a couple of their signatures. The place is quite busy and crowded. Seats are not spacious and not that comfortable. They didn't turn on the aircon or fan when we visited and it was quite hot and stuffy.
Stephanie Ann
Absolutely shocking service. They are only doing take away but can’t cope with the orders. We were told a 25min wait ended up being over 45min. Half the food was cold was by the time the other half was ready. Probably won’t come back.

The portions are huge! I'm a big eater and I struggled. Also their drinks come in round take away containers, so they're massive too! On the day we went noodle dishes were pretty popular and given their value proposition I can see why. Quality is not bad but I prefer some other Malaysian eateries. It's a place you want to go with a big to share with.

One of the authentic Malaysia restuarant in Chatswood. Not many tables and is always crowded. Foods are freshly served and taste are really good. Will definitely go back again.

The place is both authentic and good value for money. Every time we visit Chef Rasa Sayang we have had a great meal.

Good Malaysian Food, standard food price, quick service and food brought out quickly

Beautiful Malaysian food especially their pandas wrapped glutinous rice (Nonya Pak Chang)!

First attempt to Malaysian Delight in Sydney after leaving home for 2 months, just a simple Nasi Goreng Belacan brighten my day!!Authentic lovely homeland taste with polite friendly service!

The dishes were authentic and very shiok-lah !! Planning to return & check out the rest of the menu.

I don't know why I have never actually stopped & eaten here despite walking pass it almost on a weekly basis. This time I was on a mission, after a recent Zom review of a Buk Kut Teh in Melbourne, I was inspired to find one in Sydney. In fact I couldn't even recall ever seeing it on a menu in Sydney. So we went to hunt one down. Went through many of the prominent Malaysian restaurant's website and came up empty handed. Finally we found one & it was close by! The decor is "rustic" at best, we got seated upstairs, there were flys hovering around the water station. The food though were great. The Buk Kut Teh did not disappoint, sweet broth, the pork ribs were soft & slipped off the bones. Plenty of other additions in the pot, tofu puff, mushrooms, cabbage. Served with fried doughs, who doesn't like fried doughs! The curry chee cheong fun was also a pleaser, for those who can stand the heat! The nasi lemak was ok, more of a filler.

After trying their few dishes for few times, I would rated their Mee goreng and Wa Tan hor are the best in Sydney!! We are the original malaysian and now this is our recently go-to place to fix the crave!! Price was ok if you don’t order their other single dish.. will definitely back again!!

So far I have eaten twice from here and will definitely be coming back!
Their laksa has the best balance of hearty with a good amount of heat.
Their Wat Tan Hor was also very enjoyable. The stir fried flat rice noodles had a lovely deep aroma from the wok which heightened the dish.
The Hainan chicken was quite good especially the ginger and shallot sauce as well as their chili. Their chicken oily rice is a must too.

Go to place for Malaysian. Friendly attentive service and pretty decent spread on the menu.
Typical go to are the Char Koay Teow, Pork tripe soup, fried radish cake, Wah Tan Hor, curry puff, pork dumpling (Bak Chang), curry Yong Tau Foo and Kolo Mee (dried egg noodle).

That’s a big list and I’m guilty of not trying other stuff and I tend to work my way thru that list each time I am back.

Only thing not so great- the price went up since the Reno some time back. But what you get a big decent portions with lots of extra; e.g. the CKT has 4-5 big prawns!

See you there every 4th weekend!

Big bowls of Yong tau Fu laksa and wat tan hor. At $15.90 each, they were great value. Packed full of ingredients in both and both tasty which is also important. Yong tau Fu had the expected stuffed tofu but also stuffed chilli, okra and bitter melon. Wat tan hor had pork, prawns, fish cake and greens.

Last time I was dine here, probably 3 years ago.
Shop having renovations, have a second floor now ( can’t remember actually from last visit 😁)

Anyway:

Vege:
‘4 Heavenly’ $17.90
Stir fried consist of ( few ) carrots, beans, okra and eggplant.
Super greasy but taste heavenly!

Protein:

Ginger Wine Chicken $ $22.90
Super tasty especially on cold winter night.
Consist of chicken wings, ginger, wood ear mushroom and Chinese cooking wine.
Chicken meat was falling of the bones. 👍

Beef Rendang $20.9
This dish was spicy and yummy.
Cooked Malaysian style.
The only criticism was need to braised longer, because still have resistant when you chew the meat!

Good dishes all around!

Ordered a take away Chao Kew Tao, which turned out really really good. The samba sauce matched the noodles really well. Authentic.
Also went to dine in once. The chicken puff was nice, but both pork dish n chicken dish was tough to chew, took a lot of effort on my jaw. Staffs were friendly, but food was pricey.

First time eating at this place, food was really good and well priced for such big serving! Ordered the wat tan hor and vegetarian fried rice. However, got told off rudely by the waitress for not eating the mushroom on my fried rice, saying "next time if you don't eat the mushroom let the kitchen know"?!
I didn't know the vegetarian fried rice would have mushroom if it is not stated on the menu? Weird experience.

Good Malaysian restaurant, located on a busy street in Chatswood.
Laksa is good, but quite spicy. Chicken wings were freshly fried, nice and crispy. The seating area is quite cramped, but they also have an upstairs section which has a bit more room.
The service is good and efficient, I had a problem with one of my items, and they were happy to replace without any fuss.

I had the Yong Tau Foo Laksa, big serving, delicious and the yong tau foo is stuffed to the brim. Great recommendation by a colleague. Also tried the curry puff which had half a boiled egg inside. Don't think I've had one like this before quite cool!

I always seem to find my way back to Chef Rasa when I get cravings for authentic Malaysian food. Looooove their wat dan hor - it's almost a guarantee I will order one once I'm there. Other dishes I would recommend ordering is their hainan chicken rice, tofu pot and preserve vegetable and pork belly ❤️

From all the times I've been to chef rasa, the only dish I would not recommend getting is the stuffed crab.

It is the best Malaysian food of my list in Sydney!!! Oatmeal shrimp is so yumyumyum!!!Hot stir-fried crispy oatmeal with salty milky flavor shrimp, I will definitely come again! The curry puff is so special, contains a whole egg inside, crispy skin, nomnomnom. 'Zongzi' is salty egg and meat flavor, and has mushroom, taro, chestnut, salty egg yolk, pork inside as well. Spicy Ban noodle is nice as well, mix spicy dried fishes, boiled egg, choysum, chilli powder and dried agaric together.Lovely!!!!

Best Malaysian in Chatswood hands down.
Delicious CKT with decent serving of prawns and spice. Sambal here is quite good. Uses a good balance of light and dark soy and the right amount of heat, compare Ipoh club which is very dark, and Papparich which is much lighter (and none of those are spicy enough!)

The curry laksa is also for me the best in Chatswood, spicy flavourful broth, not thick like Papparich, and not mild like Ipoh Club.

Hainanese chicken okay: note no Hainanese chicken in Sydney goes anywhere near what you get in Singapore.

Nasi lemak here is a bit odd. In store they serve it compartmentalised like an economy plane meal! Also missing the fried peanuts and anchovies that I like, and for some reason the rice isn’t rich enough.
High Tea Queen
Ordered:
1. Fishball noodle soup - large portion, light and tasty, my usual order at this place
2. Pan fried radish cake - full of flavour and quite spicy for someone who doesn't regularly eat spicy food

Will I go back: yes, I have been to this place many times when I feel like eating noodle soup

Food is tasty and one of the more authentic restaurants I have been to. Belacan fried rice was very delicious just right amount of heat, belacan, and charred smokey taste. Tofu dish was also good not too salty. Wat tan hor was authentic with good amount of ingredients unlike some places I have been to which served noodles, some pieces of carrots and call it a day. They only accept cash tho.

Best yong tau foo in Sydney in my opinion.

This is my second visit. My first was over a year ago. While most reviewers are saying that the portion size is generous, I have to disagree. It used to be but not anymore. And for the price I think it's on the expensive side.

We had curry chee cheong fun which was very nice but portion was small. I wish they would give more cheong fun. Laksa yong tau fu was also quite nice and portion size was average but for $15.90 it was on the expensive end. Wat Tan Hor was the third dish we ordered and I would rate this dish 8/10

Overall, the food here is authentic and I will definite be back whenever I have cravings for yong tau foo.

Authentic Malaysian cuisine, my favourite traditional Malaysian fair in Sydney. Favourites include the Nasi lemak with chicken curry, char Kway Teo, wat tan hor and mee goreng. Yum!

Every so often, we get a craving for Malaysian laksa. Looking around in our vicinity, we came across a small Malaysian restaurant called Chef Rasa Sayang, just next to Victoria Plaza in Chatswood. What’s more, their Curry Laksa with Yong Tau Foo was something that we had never seen before so we were eager to try it.
Hello Miss May
Oh my... this is the best Malaysian food around town. Forget Mamak. Chef Rasa Sayang has got your Malaysian food carvings sorted.

I love the Nasi Lemak, served with creamy chicken curry, pappadam, deep fried egg and delicious coconut rice. Anchovies, nuts and sambal on the side.

The Mee Goreng is really spicy but yummm (if you can stomach spicy food). I'm loving the prawns and tofu, they go so well with this dish. You can always request for the less amount of chilli used.

Chef Rasa Sayang's number one dish, Wat Tan Hor, a soupy noodle kind of dish with eggs and vegetable. Doesn't sound too appetising but it's a Chinese Malaysian comfort food and I love it!

Can't wait to return again to try the other dishes... yummmmm

My favourite dish here is the Yong Tau Foo curry laksa. Not many Malaysian places serve Yong tau foo. Curry is creamy and has good depth of flavour. Goes well with the sambal. The pan mee soup is good too. With crunchy Ikan bilis.

Inside there’s a poster featuring both Hainanese chicken rice and char kuey teow as their recommended dishes or at least in the top 10 or something along those lines. The Hainanese chicken was nice as it is in most places, and came out at lightning speed within a couple of minutes. However, I found the char kuey teow so average and salty, it was quite an underwhelming meal considering how small it was also. And another thing, it was listed under vegetarian but it’s not, so just another confusing thing to add.

Surprisingly good and the best thing is that its a cheap price for a huge feed.

Loved the lamb and curry crab (really spicy,, be careful!) Lamd is the best dish imo and definitely recommend.

Recommend and will defo revisit

The most decent Malaysian food place in north shore. Had Wat Tan Hor and Char Kway Teo today but my husband and I always come here to have laksa and tom yum.
Great food, generous portion, reasonable price and friendly service. Highly recommend it.

I'm Malaysian and this is the place I go to when I am craving Malaysian hawker food. Their curry chee cheong fun, fried radish cake and char kuey teow are very good. If you're ordering dishes, try the deep fried soft shell crab with Nestum flakes (called 'oats' on the menu). This is a cheap and cheerful place - you order and pay at the counter, and it's self-service for napkins, cutlery, water and tea.

The food at Chef Rasa Sayang is homestyle Malaysian, and relatively authentic from a flavour and ambience perspective. Our table enjoyed the Marmite pork ribs, a more complex version of the good old sweet and sour pork. The tofu and vegetable claypot dish was an unexpected hit with large slabs of fried, soft tofu braised in a thick rich gravy and seasonal vegetables. We also had the sambal kangkung, the non-negotiable order at any Malaysian restaurant. It was a decent rendition here. Lastly, the yong taufu which comprises vegetables like okra and whole chillies stuffed with fish paste. Chef Rasa Sayang serves the yong taufu boiled in clear soup with what felt like a whole bottle of msg. Though I enjoyed the yong taufu pieces, I hated how thirsty the soup made me feel. The free flow sambal is delicious and jazzes up any dish. Service is mostly DIY - orders are taken at the counter but the food is delivered to your table. If you're seated upstairs, be aware that the hard surfaces amplify every sound so you might need to shout just to make yourself heard over the din.

Delicious Malaysian food. My family were super impressed by their rice dishes. My favourites were the pandan wrapped chicken bites and the fried rice which had a tasty smokey flavour. Usually I'm not even a fan of fried rice. Wattanhor not bad either. Servings are huge! Milk tea in the tub was also big. Happy with the dining experience here.

You will get tasty food at this place, portions are reasonable but probably leaning towards the "generous" side of the scale. I haven't tried the soups but they come in sink basin shaped bowls!

Overall good variety of dishes, my Malaysian friends feel it has a bit of a "made at home" taste.

Food doesn't look "clean" like when you go to Mamak or a bit more costly restaurants. It is street style food with that unrefined taste that makes you come back for more!

Chef Rasa Sayang is an authentic street stall inspired Malaysian dining experience. If you’re after a hawker styke experience this is the place, don’t expect to be taken back by the décor as its very basic. As for the food itself, there are generous portions at a reasonable price. It stands it’s own ground amongst Papa rich however it is a different dining experience altogether with a focus on street stall inspired food. The chicken satay sticks were delicious and better than some competitors and the curry puffs were also on point. I would recommend this place if you’re looking for a big feed for value.

To put in a few words, chef rasa saying is no comparison with papa rich. That is if we are comparing between all the Malaysian restaurants out there around Sydney. The atmosphere is okay, it gives out a bit of a hawker store like feeling.

I've tried the Hainanese chicken rice here and it was so-so. I thought the chicken and soup was a little too salty. Bluntly speaking, I won't order Hainanese Chicken Rice from here anytime soon.
Then I've also ordered the fish head noodle.
I recommend this soup noodle if you're up for some nice and warm fish but not fishy deliciousness. It's good.

Dessert time! Definitely give their Kuihs a try. Especially the Cassava cake and Pulut Tatal (Blue rice cake). Mmmh, go Malaysian kuihs!
Howardwashere
The Seafood Laksa came in a well balanced and fragrant curry broth not overly thick from coconut milk like many places. The seafood was fresh and made the dish stand out amongst all the other Laksa in Chatswood. The serving was very generous too. The Belacan Vermecelli was too oily and under seasoned to the point I think the chef forgot to add salt. Although the sizes were good, I'd prefer if the prices were lower and the dishes just came in a standard size.

We only had two dishes here and there were some other interesting things I wanted to try so I will reserve judgement till then. At this stage, the Laksa was the standout dish which I will come back for.

Bad service and overpriced food that's not good at all.

Don't bother.. papparich is just down the road. Just save your money and go elsewhere. food isn't great and service is pretty bad.

Best part was when we ordered dishes instead of your individual ones. Asked for extra rice because they gave so little. Told me that it's 2.50 for extra rice. So I'm like ok.. sure.. came back with that massive metal rice container but in it, one miserable bowl of rice in that massive container.. for 2.50.
Thefoodantiblog
It felt high on the msg count so lost a point. Generally fairly decent tasting but lacking the depth of flavour and burnt taste that would make it really "Malaysian" food.

As much as I love PappaRich in Chatswood, sometimes I just can’t be bothered lining up with the crowd and waiting for a table. That’s why I was excited to see a new Malaysian restaurant, Chef Rasa Sayang , open up near the corner of Archer and Victoria Streets in Chatswood. It’s just yet another option in that part of Chatswood, without having to trek to the other side of the station for my other Malaysian favourite, Mamak.

K and I visited for a quick lunch one afternoon. There’s no real table service here, you order from the guy at the counter, take your order number, and find a table to sit down at. Unfortunately on the day that we went, they had already sold out of a few menu items that I had my eye on – items like onde-onde sell out quickly, so get in before noon if you want some!

K and I ordered a drink each. Drinks aren’t listed on the menu, so you will need to ask the guy at the counter what they have available that day, as it does change all the time. We ordered a Soy Milk and a Lychee Drink , other options included herbal tea, grass jelly drink, etc. The drinks come served in a disposable cup, sealed on top like bubble tea drinks. They’re extremely large servings as well – the cups are deceptively squat, but wide. One drink would actually suffice for two people! My Lychee drink was excellent, with hints of coconut milk and chunks of chewy lychee sweetening the drink. K’s soy milk was smooth and creamy – clearly freshly made that day.

K always measures how good a Malaysian restaurant is by the quality of their Cha Kway Teow , and Chef Rasa Sayang delivers with a smoky charred flavour-packed cha kway teow with lots of “wok hei” . It goes perfectly with the Malaysian-style pickled green chilli (the condiments are per a “serve yourself” basis at the counter), and is packed full of delicious prawns, chicken, and other meaty ingredients. Impressively, the be

One word that caught my attention: Malaysian. And that marked the beginning of many visits for pork noodle and pan mee. They should start a loyalty program of some sort - some of us frequent them every other day (especially that Chatswoodian weekend flatmate of ours). Popiah ($8.80) So happy that there is no longer the need for us to travel all the way to either Campsie of Kingsford for awesome filled-with-lots-of-potato-and-half-a-half-boiled-egg curry puff ($3.00)! We could help ourselves to as much chilli as we want... Flatmates were delirious when they found out that they had pan mee ($13.90) on their menu. Even more so when it

Disappointing.. save your money and go Papparich for better food and service. So I've been to Chef Rasa Sayang a twice now. First time was not long after they were opened. We got excited after looking at the menu but 80% of the menu are unavailable. We ordered a meal each. Food were not that great but we thought we would give them another chance and try it again when more options on the menu becomes available.

Second visit... Half the stuff were still unavailable. Seeing that it was only 2 of us. Gave us a tiny little table that could not fit 2 dishes, 1 side dish and our own rice when all the other tables were empty.

They were advertising kuihs that would not be available everyday on the menu. Ordered their Belacan Kangkung... probably one of the worst I've had in Sydney. Hainan Chicken was ok. Also the Hainan Chicken option does not come with rice. Rice was extra on top. They gave us the rice in those standard metal containers. It was half full so we asked for more after. Turns out that will be another 2 dollars extra........

Here comes the best part. The container came back to us. Opened it up.. It's one bowl of rice flipped into the container.. ugh..

Would I come back? Probably not. That meal costed me 49 bucks (not including the 2 dollars they charge for one miserable bowl of rice) Furthermore the food is mediocre at best.

I'd bring my money elsewhere. (down the road to Papparich actually)

Authentic malaysian food. One of the most authentic Malaysian food restaurant you can find in Sydney.

Best curry puffs in sydney. Ive had the prawn mee and the hainan chicken rice and satay chicken sticks as mains here. Prawn mee was really good, hainan chicken soso. chicken satay is better and cheaper than mamak or paparoti. star of the menu is definitely CURRY PUFFS!!!! fresh pastry, half a boiled egg, thick chunky chicken curry and vegetable. i have them at least once a week. im hooked

Had high hopes for an authentic Malaysian experience but ended up bitterly disappointed. Tried lots of dishes but not one was a) authentic or b) any good. Had a nasi lemak which should smell and taste of coconut. Sadly there was no "lemak" at all in the rice. Tried their lor bak but it didn't resemble any lor bak that I've had in Malaysia . . . wonder if they are channelling Vietnamese instead. Char kway teow was limp and insipid, no wok "char" taste, or any of the usual ingredients you would normally find. Pandan chicken had no pandan fragrance and was overlooked and dry (amazing since they didn't use breast meat either). Fish head noodle was watery and bland, mee Siam was this weird fried noodle thing, nothing special or vaguely reminiscent of Thai flavours.

Had wanted to try the Assam laksa to compare to the Penang originals but unfortunately when I went it was all sold out. Too bad as I won't be going back.

It's self ordering but the waitresses clearing the tables are slow and disorganised. Not well laid out upstairs there are too many tables and chairs for the space making it hard to walk to get your tea and utensils.

Give me a trip back to Malaysia (Penang) for food any day. Papa Rich has better standards and more authentic food than Rasa Sayang.

Too Oily. Way too much oil in their food. Food wasn't that great either.

For those who likes Pan Mee, Fair to say that this is as authentic as it gets, Only one with cincalok sauce in Sydney.. Give it a try..

One word : yummy!!!. Just came here for dinner. don't usually write a review. and being a malaysian who loves my food and we all do really. would definitely recommend a visit here!!! worth it. had the lobak, tofu bakar, bak kut teh, sambal prawns with petai... and they were all good!!! definitely worth a trip for some authentic food!!!

The menu i have uploaded is only their quick serve menu. I will upload their alacarte menu when I have the chance or someone else can.

Char Kwai Teow: awesome with the right mix of ingredients(not too much of everything), definitely not oily like many other places.

Loh Mee: generous portion with just the right thickness in the sauce. Be surprised with some pork crackles beneath the thick noodles.

Lok bak: worth a try.

Curry puff: packed dense, go for it.
