Review Sushi Kaido - Chatswood

Amalia Medina also known as Ina Madjidhan
Kaido’s sushi are always fresh and never disappoint me. The portion are generous, and taste so yummy. Just be prepared to be in the queue when you come, but it usually doesn’t take too long. Staff are friendly, especially the owner. The restaurant it self is clean. Price are not expensive, great for what its value.

My friends and I has been a regular visitor for years. Kaido is definitely one of the best sushi in Sydney at a reasonable price. I can confidently say it is the best sushi in Chatswood. They always have good quality salmon and scallop, their soy sauce and wasabi is also very legit. Go for Kaido if you want actual sushi.

COVID has changed this place quite a bit, back then the experience was even more authentic with the plates running on sushi train, I really miss those times. Nonetheless, the level taste and quality remains the high, food are delicious as always. If you don’t mind the potential long wait and slightly premium price, you’ll love this place as much as I do

Service: 4/5 stars Staff are authentically Japanese, bright if a bit too exuberant at times, and gave good customer service. My only criticism would be their tendency to sometimes rush and disturb us a bit too much (taking away plates and the like). Customers are able to order with staff, as well as on one's phone with a QR code -- a cool system! Along with plastic separators between guests, it's not only efficient, but also helps with COVID-safety. Sushi: 5/5 - I can see why it's so highly-rated. Consistently high quality and properly-proportioned sushi, the neatest I've ever seen, reflective of their premium prices - most nigiri were delicious, the rest were at least decent. Kaido specialises in their grilled range, but the raw salmon & onion was just as delicious, the raw kingfish sweet too. Freshness will always speak for itself it seems - favourites were definitely the teriyaki scallop, pepper wagyu beef and vegetable tempura, which were absolutely mind-blowing in deliciousness. Scallop was soft and melt-in-your-mouth under a smoky, savoury and sweet sauce; I died and ascended to heaven! The pepper beef you could most definitely tell was wagyu, as tender yet bouncy, moist and perfectly-seasoned as it was (I usually don't like beef in sushi, but this was an exception). I never go for tempura on nigiri either, but this one was crispy, fragrant and salty - ootoro (fatty tuna) nigiri was also amazing, but of course for $18 a pop you are literally paying for what you get - unfortunate thing was the more popular nigiri selling out (I recommend coming earlier if you want the wagyu or cheesy scallop, though the latter was surprisingly only alright) - grilled salmon not that great strangely, when the rest of the cooked range is awesome. Salmon belly only just elevated it to 'good' once grilled too. Conclusion: I can see why people line up for Sushi Kaido, and it isn't just because it's a small restaurant; the sushi is top quality, delicious, authentic and well-presented. If only they were open for longer though -- their 3-, 3.5-hour meal durations seem way too short.

We went around 6:30pm and the lines were super long. Approx 45mins waiting time to get in. However well worth the wait. We were seated quickly and given really fresh wasabi and ginger. It used to be a sushi train but it's now a standard sit in and order Japanese restuarant. Everything was made to order which meant everything came out fresh and warm which i actually preferred to if it was a sushi train instead. They had set meals e.g. 8 pieces of nigiri for set $. But you could also order them separately. We ordered the 4pcs aburi terayaki salmon + 4pc aburi scallop set which was fresh and tasty. We also ordered soft shell crab rolls which i would 100% recommend because it was really crispy and they gave you a lot of soft shell crab. We also got takoyaki and tried the prawn salad ship which had really nice flavours. We also ordered extra aburi scallops because they were just so good! Very satisfied customer and this place is worth the hype! Be advised prices are more expensive than your standard sushi train/restuarant, however you can certainly taste the freshness and quality of the fish that makes it worth it.

After so many years, still enjoy the sushi here especially the aburi salmon belly and family ship. It can be slightly pricey but will still visit if we are in Chatswood and craving for sushi.

Good value for the taste.
They serve fresh wasabi as opposed to the store bought kind and believe me, you'll want to try it!

Always a pleasure to dine here. Staff are always welcoming and friendly. Food is fresh and have a great variety. Well priced. Love how the kids gets to choose a sticker pack after a meal. You won’t be disappointed even if you have to wait a little bit because of the queue. Wagyu beef hand roll is a must try.

The shop is always busy so expect some lining up time. Has a wide variety for sushi included in today’s specials. Highly recommended to try nigiri and sushi here.
Wendy
Family run sushi train restaurant in the heart of Chatswood. Lots of different nigiri sushi offered on the belt. Sushi was fresh and tasty. Slightly more expensive than standard sushi train but great quality. Very authentic! We will be back.

If you don’t know this place you wouldn’t walk in. But every time I walk past, it’s always full, so I decided to try them out. The service was excellent, the owner really attentive. The sushis on the sushi train are really fresh you can tell. They also have fishes of the day and they can prepare sushis with those if you want to. I recommend this place.
Angehaha
Typical sushi train restaurant. Usually busy but service is always friendly and attentive. You can also order off the menu.

A fair variety on the train. Hot and cop dishes.

Prices vary so you can have a cheap or a hefty meal depending.

3.5 Sushi Kaido is located in Chatswood and is a small sushi train. The staff are super friendly and attentive which I immediately notice. The owner seems to hover over most of the patrons but you can tell it's because he wants to make sure all the customers are looked after. It's a good tactic to get people to order more dishes as well as he spruke the fish of the day.
Anna
Sushi was relatively fresh even from the train, and udon was good. I think there are a couple of cheaper places for similar quality in Chatswood, so may not be back in a hurry, but definitely not a bad place to check out if wandering along the street.
Rob Newport
Fresh and good sushi but a little on the expensive side for the decor, which looks dated and shabby. It looks like it's family run, so the service might not be super cheery or attentive. The owner was there and seemed to hover a lot. The variety of sushi on the belt seemed shallow. Not sure if I'll be back.

Best sushi train in Sydney and best value for money! It leans more on the expensive side but you get high quality sashimi (never have I ever had an average quality sashimi), generous size, and authentic Japanese touch to their food items.

I have been a regular and loyal customer for 1.5 year and have never had a disappointing experience. Wish they have a bigger outlet though to save the wait... :)

My must-order items are: wagyu beef, salmon belly, ikura ship, ebi fry and soft shell crab roll.

Highly recommend it!

pleasantly surprised! food was so fresh and well marinated. hands down the best sushi in sydney, quite a trip tho and wish they had an outlet in the city.

💗Best sushi train in Sydney💗
You can't turn down the fresh wasabi!
$3 lunch specials are good value, wish they didn't take the aburi salmon off it though.
Must try the agedashi tofu, perfectly balanced and love the addition of mushrooms.
Wagyu hand roll melts in your mouth and is to die for.
Best serving sizes too compared to sushi hotaru and other sushi trains, much fresher too.
Daniel Zhang
Fresh and good quality sushi for a fair price although it leans a bit towards the expensive side. Nonetheless, the portions are pretty big, larger than standard so while it does cost a bit more, the portions make up for it. Waiters are friendly and attentive to your needs
Simon
The best sushi train restaurant in Chatswood.
A small train that doesn't always have a huge variety on it however the is greater variety in the menu so you can just ask for a certain dish to be prepared.
Highly recommend the wagyu beef, salmon teriyaki and eggplant tempura.
The dishes apart from sushi such as udon and agedashi tofu are also very enjoyable.
The service is very friendly
can be expensive if you are hungry. Average $4 a plate
MCHikari
One of the many sushi train shops in Chatswood. This is located next to Westfield, friendly boss and attentive staffs. Must try premium beef nigiri and grilled salmon belly nigiri, delicious! Limited space for seating but it's kind of like fast food so the wait to get seated is not too bad.

Re-reviewed February 2018
Have been here at least once a month since the last review.
Top quality.
I’d recommend asking for the nigiri of the day - such a treat if they have tuna or salmon belly. Worth the premium.

Reviewed August 2017
Recently we have ordered mixed sushi platters from Sushi Kaido every 1-2 weeks.
Top quality. Best takeaway/train sushi on North Shore.

Dined February 2017
Great fresh nigiri sushi with good selection of fish and daily specials.
Pick of the sushi trains in Chatswood.
Quick, efficient, abrupt service by staff, like most sushi trains.
Will
Really nice staff so I do feel a bit bad giving them a poor review, but unfortunately I thought the food was pretty bad to be honest. We really need some decent sushi options in Chatswood!!
Eathealthy
Very friendly service and attentive to their customers. We've tried tuna rolls, chicken with avo, tuna salad, okinomiyaki, croquette, and the dark chocolate cheesecake for dessert. They were all good and tasted so fresh. Only downside is that they have less options compared to other sushi trains in Chatswood. I would like to come back to try one of their rice bowls.

There are so many sushi places in the Chatswood area, and Sushi Kaido is located right by Westfield and nearby to Victoria Avenue, so its location is pretty good but not as noisy as if it was on the main road.

The staff was really quick to serve us as me and my friend came in for a late dinner. The atmosphere was okay, nothing exceptional, but the food was okay (if you're not very picky) and the service by the staff was pretty good.

If you're looking for a good place to have sushi, and looking for a place that's not that full, Sushi Kaido is a nice option.
Constructively Critical
Rating up for the warm customer service!
Came here late Monday night for a quick dinner. It was almost only 30 minutes left till closing, but the owner (I think, or could be the manager) was very friendly and accommodating.
He kindly offered to make fresh sushi because late at night = sushi and sashimi on conveyor belt can become quite dry. It's not top-notch highest quality food here, but very decent for the price.
Best quality out of all sushi trains I've been.
$35 for two of us, and we were full!
Would've been even better if all other staff were as friendly and nice as the owner.

Sushi Kaido is my go to sushi place in Chatswood - the sashimi is fresh and the beef aburi is just divine. Look out for the daily specials board too - they often have types of sashimi here not regularly found at other sushi trains

Visited Makoto and Kaido on the same day. Kaido's quality was so much better!

Their seared salmon nigiri was amazing, the cuts of the salmon was authentic Japanese style, unlike most other sushi trains. The price was very reasonable too.

Definitely one of the best sushi trains in Sydney.

My favourite sushi place of all time. Been a regular here for 5 years+ now and could seriously eat here every day. Highly recommend the salmon teriyaki and the salmon belly. Both are super fresh and delicious.

My favorite was the Aburi Salmon and the Scallop, This place is authentic Japanese sushi made by real Japanese Sushi Chefs, The staff are very welcoming and polite. I have been to various Sushi restaurants but was overwhelmed with the selection they offered, be sure to ask for the recommendations from the staff. be sure to pass by when you go to Chatswood.

I've been a regular here. Best sushi place in Chatswood. I'd say that here you can get a sushi that has the most authentic Japanese flavour. They always have some specials, including the O-toro from time to time. Look at the seriousness of the sushi chef: amazing! The teriyaki salmon at 3$ for lunch special is a bargain.

FRESH SASHIMI// This Sushi train has been in Chatswood for ages and I can see why. As soon as we entered we were welcomed by the floor staff and they were attentive throughout the entire service. The chefs look stern and give off a very professional vibe, which reminds me of Japan. I can see in other reviews how they come off as intimidating but they make for great sushi!

As for the sushi itself, we stuck to the sushi train, there is a large variety of dishes with well sliced portions. The sashimi came in decent cuts with a fresh selection of salmon, king fish and tuna and the produce was fresh and delicious, for those not so much into ‘Asian’ flavors there are also plenty of alternatives such as takoyaki balls, calamari and grilled fish and for those that aren't too adventurous with their raw foods, there's the delicious karaage(fried chicken) with mayo and the flame grilled eel!

The green tea ice cream for desert wasn't the most appealing but it didn't really bother me as the food was great.

While this sushi train does no re-invent the wheel it does the basics very well and which is why it has survived for so long amongst a plethora of sushi options in Chatswood. I would highly recommend for the value.
Olivia Yang
worst chef. He had a murderous expression on his face throughout the whole experience and the waitresses were dropping things every minute or so. The sushi was made poorly and the rice would immediately break apart when picked up.

Most special sushi in chatswood ever!
Can't compare with Makoto .
I love the "imperador" which is called "kin medai"in Japanese with "ponzu sauce" is very nice . But they only have it sometimes because they use only fresh fish . They have today's special sometimes imperator is one of them. They don't have SAKE but it's okay you can satisfying sushi!

Brilliant sushi! I've tried a lot of sushi restaurants around Sydney but Sushi Kaido definitely makes me feel like I'm back in japan again.
The head chef with the cool moustache makes the best nigiri sushi and it's quality is in the same league as the famous sushi restaurants around Tokyo I visit. The sushi and sashimi were fresh and the today's special gave something new compared to the regular sushi stores around with its variety of fish.

The service is good for a quick in and out style restaurant and staffs are usually friendly.
I'll definitely be back here again when I miss japan and my sushi cravings kick in.

Worst sushi in Chatswood. I have given this place many chances the the problem starts with the chef. No matter if it's busy or quiet, the a la carte sushi is always roughly slapped together. They are very tight with the size of their fish on the sushi and its wafer thin. I ordered 2 plates of salmon belly sushi and the dish was a sad affair. Wish I took a photo of the miserable looking off-cut of the salmon belly. The manager is friendly but tends to forget the simplest of requests even when he comes to ask you in the first place! I will stick to Makoto despite their poor service, their fish is always well portioned. This place will always have their suckers as many people don't know anything about food.

This is a really good Japanese sushi train located on Anderson Street in Chatswood. It is usually overlooked because most people are attracted to Makoto or Ozeki Sushi train. I like this place more because all sushi are prepared by genuine Japanese sushi masters. The varieties are not as fancy but the taste is really authentic. This is not a cheap sushi train place.

Ignore the suspiciously vague troll review. Sushi Kaido is a welcome change from the standard sushi train experience. To begin with they probably have the best sushi rice I've had in Sydney. It's hard to go back to the more run of the mill sushi places with chewy or dry rice. It's such a vital component of good sushi. Kaido has a good selection of nigri also, with some fish variety not very common in other sushi trains. I stuck exclusively with the nigri and sashimi, so I can't comment on anything else, however I'm sure it'd be high quality.
I'm glad I stumbled on Sushi Kaido as good sushi places are becoming more difficult to find. Be sure to check it out if you're in the area and looking for a better experience than the standard mega sushi bars.
