Review Lamb & Cumin - Chatswood

Laura Grace S.
We love lamb and cumin, they manage to pack so much flavour into the skewers, they're delicious! We always get the original lamb and cumin, and they're always hot, fresh, and smokey!

The Lamb & Cumin skewers with flatbread was delicious! The charring and taste of the smoke made the succulent lamb even more delicious!

The squid smells so bad and it’s raw. Not fresh at all. I think it’s been sitting there for a month or so. I literally vomit when I first bite it. Haven’t given one star for a while but this time I feel so so mad!

Beat eggplants dish they have .... Simple dish ... deep fry eggplants with pickle and oyster sauce was excellent.... Best eggplants dish ever ....

Just went there to try their classic lamb skewers. Excellent and with lots of fat, I do understand the 'lean' version now.

Delicious and authentic lamb and cumin skewers. Love how the spice adds a little kick. However, minus one star for the price. Per skewer is a little over $2, and it's quite expensive for the amount of meat on the skewer.

we ate the lamb and beef bbq, nice ~~~~~~~~ same as the one we can get from China, 和牛串第一次试,不错 5星

Very authentic Chinese lamb skewers served with cumin powder 羊肉串

They eat the food while they prepare it. And give you a buzzer that doesn't even go off when the food is ready. Is it legal for the staff to be eating the food as they prepare it for the customers? I doubt it. Both cooks were eating in plain site in front of the customers. Total trash

Not a fancy menu but the lamb and cumin was really good. The lady behind the counter was really nice and took my order with a big smile. Great service .
Tencents
Been here a few times- hawker lane in Chatswood. Generally quite a queue. The lamb and cumin skewers are the ones to go for. Lamb skewers with cumin and chilli powder and a layer of fat in between a few bites.

However this place has been inconsistent. When you get skewers that are slightly salty and have the extra chilli power, it's da bomb. Wash it down with China's infamous water like snow beer and booyah... heaven.

When you get ones that are off the mark, the skewers can taste rather uninspiring and chewy.

Other skewers are average and I don't think it's worth mentioning.

Just with any other Asian street food, whether it'll make your day or not really depends on your luck. When it's good it's a 4-5, when it's bad, it can be a 3., thus I'm giving it a 4/5 rating

Had lamb skewers here, was quite decent price. 3 for $5.5. The lamb tasted good and fresh, but a but chewy somehow.
Worth a try.
Maybe will try other skewers next time.

What can I say... that's the perfect combinations!

Flavour bring me back memory of living in China.
Having skewer by the side road, and the aroma from skewer being grilled giving you authentic Xinjiang dish experiences.

Here in Chatswood store, you can see the skewer also being made and griller from the outside clear windows.
The skewer it self Combine lamb rump pieces and fat, and meat has been marinated with cumin and salt.

For 3 skewers it will cost you $ 5.50
And for 5 skewers $ 8

We had the Teriyaki Wagyu Beef and the Lamb skewers. Good value at around $10 for 5 Beef and $5 for 3 Lamb skewers. The lamb was the tastier out of the two for me. Pieces of lamb fat made it more tender and juicier. The beef skewers were more chewy and tough. Overall good value!

Having grown up on cumin lamb skewers from Chinese street vendors, I was very excited to relive my childhood at Lamb & Cumin. Got their signature lamb skewers - 5 for $8. Not bad value and definitely moreish. Love the cumin and chilli salt which you can use according to your liking. The lamb is pretty tender, although some bits were a bit fatty. Overall, it made me nostalgic for those smoky charcoal-y plump lamb chunks that I had when I was a kid.

Located in Hawker Lane chatswood, decor is essentially a food court which is decorated like a bustling laneway in Asia. I thought the skewers were not too bad, chewy with nice spices. 3 for $5.50 or 5 for $8 for fairly thin skewers is not cheap though.

Good smokey meat on a stick.
Pretty hard to get it wrong.
Had the lamb and some chicken sticks.
Price is reasonable for a shopping centre (not a hawker...)
Order was taken quickly but food took 15minutes to prepare and serve.

super long line and when you get it it's a bit of a let down, way too much fat on the lamb skewers as some people mention. taste wise it is pretty good but probably not great value for money wise.
TrufflePig
The skewers here taste divine and shockingly tender. Love the flavours in both the lamb skewers and the chicken winner, which is worth picking through the bones in this one. Service was friendly and service was speedy.

DO: Any of the skewers. The lamb, beef and chicken are my favourites.

DON'T: Get the wraps or meals, just get more skewers. The others will just fill you up.

TIP: Once again, you're in Hawker Lane. Get's very busy so get a seat first before ordering.

Sometimes a gal has got to do what a gal has got to do. And often this means fulfilling a craving for the lamb and cumin kebabs! Honestly, it was about time one of these opened in chatswood. There's a huge abundance of Chinese and Asian food in chatswood, but up until recently not many places that do schezuan and other spicy Chinese (and now there is a boom!). Get these kebabs in spicy, you will not regret it.

{ _anne_with_an_e // review }
I’ve only ever tried the Lamb & Cumin skewers and on my first visit I selected it with the hot chilli powder. My word it was hot! It blew my head off, but, it was tasty. I’ve returned several times since, and I still find the lamb portions a bit small and sometimes can be dry, with a few pieces of just fat. Consistency and portion sizes can be a better, but flavour wise it's good.

Pros // fresh, tasty
Cons // small portions, sometimes dry

Food: 3/5
Ambience: 3.5/5
Service: 3.5/5

First time visiting the new lane. Lots of food options, though this stands out as you can see them making the skewers in front of you. The meat was delicious and the eggplant salad is a must. Great for a quick bite when compared to 'food court' food

I'm a little undecided about the lamb and cumin skewers. When you get a piece of meat, it was nicely grilled, charred with crusty crispy bits. Nice seasoning and flavour. However every second piece of meat on the skewer was actually a blob of fat. The eggplant stack was delicious though. Both in flavours and textures. Definitely a winner there. Might try the chicken skewers at some stage.

Gosh.. First n foremost, their service leaves quite a bit to be desired. We got to hawker lane @10:45 wanting to try out chachu's (across lamb & cumin) and lamb & cumin.

The cashier @chachu's was accommodating and apologetic saying that they hoped to see us @ 11 am when they were ready to serve. Got our order in @10:55 am embraced with their enthusiasm.

Hopped to lamb & cumin @10:56 only to be told OFF by the plump girl lurking inside while 2 other attendants deferred to her. Mind you, I did ask @10:45 am when they open. The plump lady (manager?) said 11 am curtly.

4 min later @11 am, we ordered lamb chicken and beef brisket sticks, only to be told OFF again. Long story short, meat was well seasoned, bit salty, bit overcooked/dry. Food 3/5. Service 2/5.

I’ve long been a fan of them from the Chinatown night markets, but this time, they just weren’t bringing it. Usually, they operate a single stall in the middle of billowing smoke that makes you smell exactly like the skewers you’re just about to receive, and the succulent lamb comes out hot, juicy, and threaded with the all important lamb fat interspersed with the meat. Ambience aside, these ones were just a touch overcooked and so dryer in texture, and it just didnt have the same smoked and spice kick that I’m so used to at the night markets.

To put it simply, Lamb and Cumin specialise in BBQ'd meat on sticks. It's all cooked freshly on their premises right in front of you so you can watch it all happening and savour those great BBQ smells. They come in different quantities and in different meats - just choose at the counter and wait for your sticks!

The lamb skewers were alright. You have the option of adding chili powder which added a nice kick. For me personally I felt it was a little too salty and probably wouldn't have more than one. Also, I think I was expecting the meat to just fall off so it would be easy to bite off the skewer, instead it was chewy, but then again some people prefer this and maybe they're meant to be this way.

Following my disastrous visit to their Hurstville stall some months ago, I was not keen on dampening my experience of Hawkers lane with yet another tray of grisly lamb. But, Alas, my fellow diner couldn't give a damn what I thought, and made a bee line for the queue as soon as we shuffled off the escalators.

We waited and waited and waited some more. Had eaten through three other stalls of food and finally after a good 20 minutes of staring blankly at each other, our number was called. Hooray!

On first impressions, they looked good. The lamb was pieced together and interlaced with cubes of fat. The oregano chicken had a decent amount of char and released a pungent scent of charcoal. Flavour wise, I remain unconverted. There was just nothing special and after a couple mouthfuls, all I could taste was charcoal. Seasoning was slightly light handed and factoring in the 20minutes we sat there waiting, it really did not meet expectations.

Doubling back, I also felt the portion size was much smaller than that of the Hurstville chain. Watching the staff huddling around the grill with quick hands is an interesting concept which has been translated from their original stall. However, the smog that was building up inside the glass prison certainly makes for uncomfortable watching. OH&S would have a field day.

Thanks to the wonderful folks at FCBA I was invited to attend a critics/ bloggers dinner food tasting at the newly opened store for LAMB & CUMIN at Chatswood Westfiled in the new food precinct, Hawker Lane.
Great fun and I got to eat balls :). Read on for the full review.........

The new 'Hawker's Lane' in Chatswood Westfield is home to the 3rd outlet of Lamb and Cummin. I wrote this before the Zomato page was up so this is based on the opening and then again on the second visit.

First visit:

This was by far the most popular eatery one the new food court with a queue that never faded. It's a unique eatery aptly named to provide the deliciously fragrant Lamb skewers to the masses of Uyghur cuisine. The Xinjiang region of China is home to the Uyghurs and it brings with cuisine that is famous for their La Mien (hand pulled noodles) and Lamb Skewers. However, it is the latter variant that Lamb and Skewer have honed into and they do it quite well.

There is a variety of skewers on offer cooked over charcoal giving it the authentic charcoal smoked flavour along with the Oregano Chicken and a variety of wraps and salads. It's a good concept with an exciting menu brought to a franchise model and due to this being a franchise, you will find that the portions or size of the skewers cannot match the genuine Uyghur restaurants in Chinatown. Furthermore, concentrating on the lamb skewers alone, the difference between these and those from the authentic restaurants are that they literally divide the meat with cubes of fat in such a way that you get lamb-fat-lamb-fat which loses it's authenticity and creates a manufactured feel but quite off putting. This is opposed to having fattier trims of lamb where the fat is naturally incorporated into the cut to at least make it more acceptable. Anyway, the seasoning was authentic and chilli well applied when chosen. The salt and pepper squid was tender and well spiced also taxing like the lamb skewers.

Overall, a pleasurable experience to satisfy any lamb skewer craving and well priced. If you can accept you don't have to drive to the city to experience authentic Uyghur cuisine and the portions being smaller you won't be disappointed with the quality of food on offer here. The only thing missing is a beer as Lamb and Cummin is great beer food!

Second visit:

I came a week later when the crowds had somewhat thinned out a little and there was no longer a queue. The kitchen was nevertheless still very quite busy. This time, there was a notable crunch of sand on many skewers that were from the heat beads used to cook the skewers. It may have come about due to over fanning the coal, leaving loose heat bead ash sticking to the skewers or being placed too close to the coal. This was very off putting and inexcusable as this is their specialty. It was a shame to see such a distinct difference between quality in a week. After 2 shops, you would have thought that they would have ironed out this issue with better instructions to their chefs.
