Review Baodao Taiwanese Kitchen - Chatswood

MELISSA LIN
As a Taiwanese, I would say that the taste is somewhat authentic. I did enjoy my dumplings and the taste of beef noodles wasn’t bad. Good quality meat as well according to my partner. However, I feel like it’s a little bit over priced for the portion you get. Not much option on the menu and the images don’t look very appealing either. Wish they put more effort into the dining environment as well. Probably wouldn’t come back unless I really miss food from home.

Wholesome Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Friendly service. Good for a quick simple meal. Order at the touch screen and take a number with you to a table. The beef noodle soup ($15.90) is the specialty - meat is tender and soup is flavourful. The bao and boiled dumplings were also nice. Portions are average. You won’t walk out very full, but you won’t feel hungry either.

Wheel Cake is a traditional Taiwanese snack. Thanks for making such a delicious dessert. The two traditional flavors of red bean and taro are highly recommended. Only Thursday and Friday at Chatswood Market. Braised Pork with Rice and Eggs was delicious. The pork is very sweet and not greasy, and the egg is full of soy sauce light aroma. The beef noodles are super delicious. The soup is very refreshing and sweet. The meat is so tender that no bite is required at all. GWA-BAO is a well-known traditional burger in Taiwan using juicy pork. Highly recommended for gourmets who love pork. thanks

A small Taiwanese restaurant. The food was tasty and the portion was just right. They have a self serve ordering system similar to Maccas but the instructions were confusing. Asking the customer to scan the QR code at the table when it was really asking the customers to take the table number sitting right next to the ordering screen. The ordering screen is located right at the main entrance which also blocks other customers from entering and leaving the restaurant.

A good no frills taiwanese noodle shop. Noodles were delicious and service was quick. Always thought beef noodle soup had bok choy but wasn't included in the two soups we got

This place is a local gem. The food is delicious and well price. My favourite dish is the fried chicken and prawn pork steam dumplings.

A regular haunt for me. Myself and many others got the basil chicken and rice and it was simply delicious! The chicken was well seasoned and never fails to impress. A little too pricy for what it is but still I would recommend!
Minh Truong
They had these Cakes which are great. I really love the matcha and custard one! Should try it out!

This place used to be awesome and a staple in our restaurant list. They must have changed management or something, it's borderline terrible now. Their baos were stale, and their beef noodle soup no longer packs the same punch as before, instead a watery blands mess.

I don’t know Taiwanese cuisine very well. I’ve heard about the famous beef noodle soup, that seems to be gaining in popularity these days, and the other dishes seem familiar, but I’m still a bit foggy: so it was good to be out with some experts and get a good selection of representative dishes, at this casual eatery in Chatswood.

It’s been awhile since last visit, their menu seems to have changed a little, but glad to see that the classic noodle soups are still there. Got the beef combination noon soup. Plenty of beef, tripe, brisket, all of them soft and melt in your mouth. Good flavours through the meat and the soup. There was so much, I couldn’t get through all of the noodles as well. The side of the tofu & was ok, prefer the tofu to be a bit softer.

Ordered the signature dumplings, it was made to order and very tasty and delicious! Love the fresh soymilk. Very impressed, ambience is casual, great lunch spot.

Green Tea Wheel Cake : 😁 Great

Walked past and had to get one from their food stall. Piping hot green tea flavoured custard in a warm crispy pancake batter. Very flavourful and beautiful to have on a cold windy day. Keen to try their other flavours.

We had a quick lunch here, good lunch deals with reasonable portions. Tasty Taiwanese food! Quick service. The restaurant isn’t too very big but enough seating for small groups or individuals. The stewed pork belly with rice was delicious along with the sides.

It's a cute little place with beautiful lanterns hanging off the ceiling. Staff are super nice and friendly. We had the baodao beef noodle soup and the wonton noodle soup. The broth in the beef noodle soup was amazing and the wonton noodle soup's broth was good but not as flavoursome as the former. The wontons were delicious though. Noodles were good too. We came out of there satisfied; it was exactly what we needed on a cold winter evening.

The place a bit small, but the food is okay.
When you come here, the first thing you need to try beef noodle soup, for appertiser Fish cake and gwa bao is good.

Honestly my favourite restaurant in Chatswood, i love the fried chicken, the dumplings, the rice with pork mince, the ambience and last but not least that bald headed guy. 5/5 what a great place i would live there
Kelly Nie
It is a quite OK Taiwanese restaurant. We go there to have a quick meal quite often. Restaurant is clean, staff are polite, food is authentic.
Xlittlecupcake
Ordered the eggplant, pork + rice dish, baos, beef noodles, winter melon tea, and soy milk.
*eggplant, baos, and drinks were very nice
*beef noods and porkrice dish were average
Xoxo.msjamie
One of my go-to places for a comforting bowl of beef noodles. Although I always order their beef soup noodles, I have to mention that their fried chicken is fantastic- super crispy and light batter and the chicken is so juicy. I’ve been a few times and would recommend it.

This place does not fail me, ever! Best Taiwanese food in Sydney for a reasonable price. Love their mince beef rice. Staff are always so friendly.

We came here with high expectations because we really enjoyed our meal here the last time we visited several months ago. However, we didn't enjoy our meals as much this time.

Between 2 people, we ordered 2 side dishes of seaweed&tofu and steamed asian green, sticky rice with pork sauce and pig trotters dry noodle. We found the sauce for the sticky rice too sweet. The pig trotters was nice with good flavour but the dry noodle that came with it had minimal flavour.

First time came to Bao Dao Taiwanese Kitchen. This restaurant is not easy to locate. It is a small restaurant in Chatswood and that's my first time to have lunch in baodao. The environment is very small, but my sister and I we both think the dishes are really nice, the noodle soup and pork dumplings are really good. We highly recommand the pork dumplings.
Although the food is not very quick but we really satisified for the service.I have some suggestions:
-Shorten the cooking time for dumplings but it was really nice and I highly recommand this and it really worth to wait.
-The attitude provide from the stuffs make me feel comfortable.
-The last thing i want to say is whilst a worker was extremely busy another worker was playing her phone, i don't know is this situation is normal or not.
I will come next time and try other dishes!!!
Food - 4.5/5
Ambience - 2/5
Service - 3/5
Value for Money - 4.5/5

Came here by myself as I was craving some pork belly based dishes, and got myself the Lu Rou Fan (braised pork and rice) and the pork belly Bao. The rice dish was fantastic. Good flavours, nice pork to rice ratio, but I felt like I would've liked an egg half or something to go with it. The Bao was pretty meh. Probably not worth it in my opinion. It was pretty dry and the pickled cabbage's flavour meshed really poorly with the rest of the bun.

$7.5 for the rice is definitely worth it, pretty filling just by itself. Service wise was not the best, pretty haphazard and it took forever to get the waitress to take my order. Will be back for the rice, but nothing more really to say about this place.
Authenticity
Beef noodle soup used good ingredients, the meat and tendons were tender and flavoursome, the presentation was adequate. It can improve with better customer service and smile on the faces.
Ann
The fried chicken maryland was hot served and crispy; The signature pork with rice was nice too, served with pickled veggies and half an egg. Food was generally tasty and very quick.
Bought take home dumplings and pork sauce, were not worth it, way too over priced.
Service, not really good.

Love this restaurant! Quite small with a Taiwanese style design. The food is amazing, especially the pork rice. The sticky pork rice is also quite good, full of flavour. Whenever I go I always get a side of gua bao which is amazing. Overall, always happy with the food and speed that the food gets served.
Pignic_
Bao Dao is definitely my go-to Taiwanese restaurant. Their pork rice and beef noodles are THE BEST! For drinks, I would suggest trying their SOY BEAN MILK & WINTER MELON TEA! Everything is reasonably priced, one of the cheap eats but DELICIOUS food in chatty!

Feel free to follow my instagram @pignic_ for more foodie adventures.

Eating here made me feel like I stepped into a small, hole in a wall eatery in Asia. You definitely need to try their intercoastal noodle and their fried basil chicken. The food is filled with loads of flavour and I'm excited to try the other dishes like the trotters and would give the Gwa Bao and dumplings a miss in our next visit.

This place ticks service, food and value for money - a great place to grab a quick bite in Chatswood that will satisfy your stomach and budget to allow you to spend money on other non essential items in Westfield.
Ned
A nice, small Taiwanese joint. It's a little more expensive than what it used to be but still a cheap and quick feed. Some items on the menu are quite average but there are a few that taste really authentic. The beef noodle soup and eggplant are excellent and the trotters are great too. They also do some decent frozen takeaway dumplings that we sometimes get for hot pot.
McNuggets
So, perhaps unnecessary disclaimer that I was a bit flu'ey when I had this combination beef noodle soup and pork trotters but holy hell this was the perfect, and I mean *perfect*, meal for what ails you.

Everything was rich and decadent and just felt like the chef himself was giving you a big warm sweaty hug (strong imagery but this bowl of soup did induce the eat sweats). This if anything is the Chinese version of soul food, and I will definitely be back for more.

First time I went to a Taiwanese restaurant. I can't really tell the authenticity of the food, as I am too confused with the cuisines of South East Asian countries.
I ordered Gwa Bao and Pork Sauce with Rice. I loved Gwa Bao as it had celery and crushed peanut with Pork. The Pork Sauce with Rice was average as the sauce's taste was not mixing with the rice quite well. But i can have 10-12 of those Gwa Baos, loved it.
Diana T
Quick service, although a small menu their baos are worth a try. My partner had 3 but he said he couldn't eaten another 7. We also had the basil chicken which was unfortunately on the dry side.
Rebecca
Oh how I love this place. Between the traditional bao fillings, the beef noodle soup and the eggplant it's hard to go past this place for Taiwanese food in Sydney.
W
I got jacked by these guys. I ordered 2 servings of the chilli wonton (6pcs a serve, $8.5 each) and the wontons had the smallest amount of filling in them. It was the size of a 5c piece, no joke. Unbelievable!!! It tasted alright though but I wasn't full so I had to go to Maccas afterwards to get some more food. Atleast the food was edible and the staff were friendlier than your average Asian restaurant. I'll try something else next time
Tyson Wolker
Food was pretty average too in comparison to all the other good food options in Chatswood. The wonton soup had rotten pork inside the wontons and the soup tasted like water.
TresHungry
The food here isn't up to par with the authentic Taiwanese food you get from Taiwan, but it would do if you had a Taiwanese food craving to satisfy. We were feeling adventurous so we tried the intestines. They were absolutely delicious! The Pork Belly Gua Bao however was a slight disappointment. The fillings were OK, but a little bland. The dough lacked that soft, fluffiness that a good bao dough usually has. The fried tofu was also not bad, but nothing spectacular.
Will
Awesome Taiwanese food. I love the combination beef noodle soup and usually go for it about once a week if I have the chance. Ive had the basil chicken and some of the side dishes too and can't really fault those either.
High Tea Queen
Ordered:
Beef noodle soup- decent taste, I think it is better than the din tai fung beef noodle soup.

Will I go back: yes but only for the beef noodle soup, I tried their minced pork rice dishes before and it was horrible with weird taste.

Went to this place tonight with a friend after work, for a Friday night dinner. Was pretty impressed. The atmosphere was very cosy and small spaced, but considering it was a Friday night, the place had a volume level that was just perfect for me (not too loud nor too soft). Service was average, nothing special, but they were very efficient at taking food and serving food (got it very quickly which is a plus!).

Ordered the Fried Basil Chicken with Rice for $14 and was blown away by how delicious it was! Also tried the Bao Dao Pork Belly Gwa Bao for $4.5 and that too was good (but not amazing). Would I recommend for people in Chatswood? YES, and do a Friday night if possible!
Dreamer Down Under
After having been too Eastwood branch I had high expectations. A little bit disappointed because Chatswood is a smaller restaurant cramped with lots of tables. Can't imagine how noisy and crowded this place gets when it's a full house. Ordered an "intercostal" and tendon beef noodle soup. Interesting name, but it's really aka short ribs. Less fatty than brisket. Soup was packed with intense flavour and almost burning hot temperature wise, the way I like it. Noodles were just right, chewy and smooth. Tendon was nice and soft, almost mushy which I like too. Serving was very small for $13.90, I actually finished everything. No wonder they offer additional serve of hand made noodles for $2. Having compared my photo from Bao Dao Eastwood, Chatswood definitely gave me a smaller serving. Maybe it's the high rent here? Another disappointment is that they don't do the Taiwanese red bean cakes and boba tea like Eastwood so in comparison it's such a limited menu here. And I miss the decor. But guess the food is good and I'd return if I was in the area.
Crème Brulee Crack
This place sells food that reminds me of home :). Not literally, but the food here is simple but amazing. My favourite would be the braised pork with rice, in which the flavours are done to perfection (not too salty, and a hint of sweet) and the egg just tops it off.
Meltem
Went here for a work lunch break. The staff were lovely and the sevice was extremely quick.
As a non pork/bacon/ham eater there was not many options on the menu. I ordered the basil chicken without bacon which was absolutely delicious.
The chicken was verg crispy yet so tender on the inside with a hint a of basil beautifully seasoned.
My friends enjoyed several other dishes as shown in my pics and they were very satisfied.
I would definetely go back for the basil chicken.
Julie Eccles
Came across this place, just off the main strip in Chatswood and very impressed. As soon as you order any dumplings they advise 10 minute wait and it's worth it, beautiful fresh dumplings, noodles in the soup all delicious. Also really enjoyed the basil chicken, so juicy. Great little place, beautiful food and very friendly staff, can't fault this one
Foodiemumma
Amazing! I popped in here for lunch, not too experienced with Taiwanese food, and what a nice surprise. From the friendly staff to the quaint decorations, the place felt very welcoming. The Baodao pork belly Gwa Bao was purple so I wasn't sure what to expect! But wow - it melted in my mouth! The fried fish cake and wontons were equally delicious but my favourite was the fried basil chicken. That alone is enough to bring me back again and again! Highly recommended as a lunch spot in the heart of Chatswood!
Anna
So affordable. Great value! Not sure how many customers are aware of this, but you can get 10% off if you order over the phone for takeaway, which was a nice surprise because it was so unexpected.

They have size options for the noodles as well which I think is convenient as you have the choice of getting more variety by downsizing each dish. Ordered the beef intercostal noodle soup in large, mushroom and tofu noodles in small, and the pork belly gwa bao. This order was $21 with the discount. Definitely worth it!

I'm guessing the gold stars mean most popular/recommended and with good reason. The beef noodle soup, although a little salty, was tasty and beef was tender. As long as you don't drink just the soup, it would be a very enjoyable dish. The gwa bao also had a gold star and was nice. Would like to try the spicy beef one next time. The let down with the food would have to be the mushroom and tofu noodles. It had a bit of a medicine/herbal taste to me, can't pinpoint what the actual flavor is, but I didn't really enjoy it that much. I think if you stick to the recommendations it will be a thoroughly enjoyable meal.

This little taiwanese joint is amazing, menu is simple two pager and the best thing is the spicy combination beef noodle. The noodle is very consistent and always tasty

The sides are great, make sure you get the pig ears and fried chicken!

Definately recommend this place!

Food is affordable and generous sized without sacrificing quality. However, service could be better with staff being no-fuss or perhaps disinterested and disengaged with customers. The ambience of the restaurant is casual, with kitschy lanterns hung up high.

All in all, we would recommend giving Bao Dao a go. It's nothing particularly special but offers decent Taiwanese food.

Had lunch here today. Massive improvement compared to last time we reviewed. No longer required to pay up front. Noodle is much fresher and the pork belly Gwa Bao is much better than last time. We have adjusted their rating accordingly. Bravo to todays chef.

======== 12 April 2016 =======
Came here quite often. Love their BaoDao beef tendon and noodle soup, Spicy wontons, Spicy beef gwa bao.

Must pay upfront before they cook the food.

Bottomline : Great Authentic Taiwanese food, good variety too. Service is okay (very polite). Great value.

The portion is so little! I'm a small girl with a small appetite and normally I would have unfinished food..but this place I was still so hungry after. For a $13 noodle the portion is really tiny.

Won't be coming back here again

Their pork belly buns (gwa bao) have been singled out by Fairfax’s Good Food as one of the "Best places in Sydney for a pork fix". Melty pork belly, pickled Chinese vegetables and sweet, roughly crushed peanuts are skewed between squeezy steamed buns. It’s easy to see why these buns have made the list. There’s also fiery spicy beef or pickled cabbage and tofu buns if pork belly’s not your thing.

I had walked by the Taiwanese eatery Bao Dao on several occasions wanting to try it, only to be deterred by the queue outside. Having dined there, I now understand that the queue isn't just due to the small interior, but also because their food is delicious and great value! Try the basil fried chicken and the dumplings!
Samuel Ryan
An authentic Taiwanese kitchen. The wonton noodle soup is out of this world. As are the pork dumplings. I highly recommend a dumpling session here.

Am I awake?. I dream about this place at least once a week. No.1 spicy beef noodles with fried basil chicken any day of the week. Their $3.50 noodles with soy sauce is excellent as well. Just add chilli sauce and viola!

I wish I lived closer so I could be with my Bao Dao every day.

This Taiwanese eatery gets pretty busy at lunchtime but service is quick so it would be only a short wait for a table. My Taiwanese friend suggests what’s good for a quick lunch, we’re having a simple pork & rice dish ($7,50) with greens as a side ($4,50). The pork & rice comes with pickled vegetables and half a boiled egg. It’s super tasty, I love it. And one bowl is absolutely enough for one person...

We decided to try this Taiwanese restaurant we saw the night before...it was completely packed in Eastwood... but we tried the one in Chatswood instead...

We got there a bit after opening time for lunch and we sat down and browsed through the menu. When we decided to order we realised that a lot of things on the menu were not available to order.. kinda disappointing but it was too late to leave now. So next best option was to just try what we can to tie us over for lunch...

You order and pay at the counter and they bring the food out to you. The staff seemed to be more occupied talking to each other than serving. A smile wouldn't hurt either.

We started off with the Pork sauce on Rice. The food here seem like vey staple food. Very basic flavours. Nothing that really wowed me.

Next dish was the Bao Dao Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. It had plenty of flavours. The noodle was very heavy and thick. The meat had an interesting texture and taste. It was soft and a nice mixture of meat with fat. The spicy part was non existent.

We also shared the Crispy Pork Chop meal.... what we did realise from all this was that the pictures looked so much better than the actual food that came out...

We topped it all off with their Wintermelon drink. It was the highlight of the meal.

I've had the Taiwanese style chicken that's been popping up and causing a needed disturbance in the market.... but these main meals really leaves me wishing I spent my dollars elsewhere.

When this place first opened (around 2 years ago?), I often visited this place because 1. I love Taiwanese street food, 2. the proportions were small but affordable, meaning you could afford to order a lot of different stuff and 3. it had a great atmosphere and was small and cosy. However, I don’t go to Chatswood as much and I try to go to the new places that open on the rare occasions that I do go. But for my friend’s birthday, I decided to take her here since I’ve had good memories from this place, especially seeing some new additions on the menu. Pretty lanterns! Bao Dao is a pretty small restaurant, that originally had a small menu that consisted of small side dishes and assorted stuff. On a recent visit, I realised that they extended their menu and added some larger items on their menu like noodles and rice dishes (before, you’d have to order at least two dishes to be satisfied!). I think it’s nice that they added some more items and kept the old items because I think part of the

Lobster roll was acceptable, pork not so tasty and chicken also not tasty. ... Sweet potato fries were decent so would get them again

The pork belly bun was a big hit with our group – sandwiched with a soft white steamed bun, chunks of the soft braised pork belly was served with sour pickles, fresh herby coriander, and crunchy peanut shards – a perfect example of textured eating. We ordered two to share between four, but I could have easily eaten one by myself!

Bao Dao's fairly new to Chatswood, having been around for a little less than a year. Since it first opened, I've heard many good things about it. Indeed, it's one of the more affordable sit-down restaurants around the area, the service is fast, and the food is tasty - even according to my dinner buddy that night and one of my fussier friends when it comes to Shanghainese and Taiwanese cuisines.

I love Taiwanese food! Cheap and amazingly delicious! I love there small dishes, so you can try abit of everything. And it’s all very cheap. They even have tea for free as well The food comes quickly too! Shop 8 376 Victoria Ave Chatswood , NSW http://www.baodao.com.au/

Last night M and and I had the chance to finally try out Bao Dao Taiwanese Kitchen that had opened up in Chatswood some months ago. The menu was interesting and served up some traditional "home-style" dishes that we were craving.
Missklicious
...we couldn't resist the lure of Taiwanese beef noodle soup at Bao Dao Taiwanese Kitchen , one of the many food choices dotted along Victoria Avenue. The menu consists of a selection of smaller dishes, rice dishes and of course, the beef noodle soups. The shop is quite small with a handful of seats. The decor is bright, with a red wall and these colourful lanterns everywhere. Ordering and paying is done at the counter, before the dishes are brought out relatively quickly. Gwa bao Braised pork belly bun with pickled mustard, coriander and crushed peanuts. These soft buns of fatty pork were deceptively filling!
Chrys
The one thing I said that we must all have was the gwa bao or pork belly burger ($4.50), which was very similar to those at Ippudo but had a lot more ingredients (minus the mayo that Ippudo uses). This is the must order dish, in my opinion.
Constant Diner
Here's another new addition to Chatswood's flourishing food scene. Bao Dao has a small and simple menu of Taiwanese dishes. I enjoyed the sticky rice with pork mince topping and the gwa bao (pork bun).
The Sydney Tarts
...choice of food is also quite restricted (I’m hoping the selection will grow as time goes on) but what you do get is just about the most authentic Taiwanese street food as you can get here.
Miss DD
Worth a visit to try. Order and pay at the counter then sit back and wait at a table underneath a roof full of pretty lanterns. First visit and I tried the basil chicken- it was ok.Not much flavour as I'd expected and bit annoyed by spicy chilli powder as description on menu didn't state it.

Food was well priced for busy and fast paced cafe style Taiwanese food.

Small plates or bowls of soup seem to dominate menu.

I'd drop in to try for nice alternative to thai n chinese but not worth making a destinstion.

Saying that its good . Affordable dinner with friends type of place
Lisa
Amazing food! Had spicy beef noodle soup, pork belly and wonton soup, so delicious will definitely be back!
Jay Ng
Great food here! Their pork bun is as good as or better than any I have tasted (although I haven't been to momofuku yet)... But for $4.50 there are no complaints here!

So good and authentic. One of the best Taiwanese places in Sydney. So tasty and authentic too. The dishes are small and cheap which is great for sharing. You must try the braised pork knuckle so tender and flavoursome. The sticky rice, dumplings and fried chicken are also good

Polite fast service. We came instead 8pm for a late dinner. Ordered Stewed pork knuckles ($7. 70), Geandma stewed pork belly meal ($12.90) and Spicy beef noodle soup ($11). Excellent value and what we ordered was either pre-prepared or cooked fast. Really tasty like homemade meal. Would definitely return again.

Good value. Came here, decided we'd try the Willoughby Dumpling house instead and drove out, only to find a sign in the window saying they'd moved... to Bao Dao in chatswood. OOooooooookkaaaaayyyy...

Came back, its a no nonesense you order and pay at the counter place. Don't know if the other reviews are talking about the same bao dao or menu changed but whats on offer seems pretty good.
Had the prawn dumplings, which were amazing and fresh, the pork belly bun, a little sweet but ok, pork belly set, again ok and the star the sticky rice. So so so good, the best I've ever had not too oily, sweet and with little gems of pork belly throughout.

The food seems like its made fresh to order and while the menu is limited its definitely value for money

Service Is quite slow. Taste are average, you can get others which are cheaper and taste better. Charges too high for average taste food

Quick and good. I haven't eaten uniquely 'Taiwanese' food before, or not to my knowledge anyway. Being vegetarian, they had a few options for me. After oogling the menu outside I was on my way to the counter to place my order. The waitress there interceded me and put me on a table with menus - telling me to order at the counter when I was ready. She was very sweet. After sitting down for a reasonable amount of time I made the order of rice with shitake mushroom and tofu, picked cucumber, steamed asian greens, the pocket tofu and the wintermelon tea. Like a sushi train, order enough and the price will surely creep up.

Food arrived quickly. The wintermelon tea ($3) was so nice. Sugary of course but the flavours reminded me of the many iced teas I've had overseas. That's the sign of a good dish, memories. I wish I tried the soy milk because that's made here too. I really liked the cucumber and the greens especially considering the price ($4ea). The rice dish was good but not great, I usually prefer a bit more flavour (~$6). The tofu was not to my taste at all - extremely soggy from all the buttery/oil - is this how the Taiwanese have their tofu - I don't know.

I wouldn't come here for a long meal as it seems very in-and-out, but great for a little food pick me up in-between shopping or a quick dinner.
