Review Hong Kong Kitchen - Chatswood

squiffy
Hong Kong Kitchen - "Quick and easy" Quick, cheap and authentic Hong Kong food that won't leave you on an empty belly. Ambience and the establishment itself isn't great, but it's similar to most cha chaan tengs. Utensil and cutlery cleanliness isn't their strong suit but you do get what you pay for, with meals averaging roughly $8 dusty menus and not exactly careening sparkly plates and bowls are a worthy trade. Staff are a bit cold but not the point of them being a bit rude. Some only speak Mandarin in a very strong Hong Kong dialect so you might have trouble understanding them even if you're from the Mainland. Drinks were quick to arrive and tasted great. The Ceylon tea had a strong lemony punch and tasted really good, not overly sweet whatsover and I did have to add some extra sugar. The hot variant would set you back $3, which to most would be a great deal for that quality. Food is where the restaurant loses most of its marks. The noodles I ordered had a paltry two slices of Spam which to be fair tasted nice, fried eggs and a heap of unappetizing-looking Nissin noodles in a dubiously brown soup. Taste wise it is very mediocre but still sufficiently filling. Since I paid only $7.50 for the entire bowl it isn't too severe of a blow to quality but better food quality with more effort put in would be a great improvement. Ambience/Staff: D+ Drinks: A Food: C+ Total grade: C+ | Average Comments: If you are short on cash or just looking for a quick and cheap bite, I would recommend this place, but for more fine dining Hong Kong Kitchen isn't too great. Valuation: ✴️one star - “worth the price”

Great flavours and great value. Just be sure to decide quickly what you want. Will be difficult to beat for a cheap eat.

I have eaten at this place over 10 times and find it to be a very cost effective way to try Chinese/ HK dishes. The menu is quite expansive and huge variety (everything from dessert, hot pot, stir fried, braised and even steak). The service is not great but passable, and many of their dishes can imitate the flavour (not taste of course, given the price) of restaurant dishes. Dishes all ranging from $8.2-$10 with large serving sizes - yes please! For its price, it’s definitely a 5/5 for me.

The food, although hot right out of the wok, is average at best. We ordered 6 dishes (not shown in the pics, the honey fried prawns) and I only really enjoyed 2 of them, the fried pepper pork chops and the braised eggplant. Those were actually really good, the eggplant went down well with white rice and the fried pork chops were well seasoned and crispy. The rest of the dishes, especially the sizzling "hot" plate, left a lot to be desired. The hot plate was not heated enough to induce the desired sizzle sound so that was a little disappointing (a bit childish I know, but as the saying goes, we eat with our ears first). No worries, I can look past that if it tasted good... It tasted meh. The sauce was too sweet, overpowering the ingredients (was only onions and meat, but never underestimate the power of a nice fresh onion) and the beef was on the tougher side. Hot tea is provided in a thermos, and as always is pleasant to have with this type of food (actually hot tea goes well with a lot of things). On a side note, we arrived at a time when it was not too busy, indicated by Google reviews, so service was actually fine. It would have been nice if they provided us with an English menu that also included pictures. I didn't bother to ask for one but I would assume they have one. Food is cheap, but not significantly less so than surrounding restaurants, you're still looking at around $15-20 per person if you're eating out in a group and ordering many dishes. It's a lot cheaper if you only order a single dish. Otherwise food is fine, if a bit mediocre at times. Might come back again to try more of their menu.

Always the best HK foodie in town! Will come back tmr!!

Never disappoints. Great food, value and service. Best beef and chicken fried rice for the kids... Highly recommend the salt and pepper pork chop. Most dishes under 10 bucks!

I have ordered their breakfast special and have waited 35minutes due to their lack of staff. Also as others have mentioned, the service was terrible. I ordered the macaroni beef in soup and the soup was boiled water + maggi sauce. The bread and omelette that came with the meal was okay but the bread was quite soggy and wet. Regardless, while the price is extremely low, the food and service is not good and I would much rather pay a little bit more to get a good meal at other HK cafes in the area.

Food is average, can also be inconsistent with the taste. The place is your typical chinese resto, sticky floors, sticky chairs, esp the leather seat, dirty utensils (anyone can tell they were not washed properly. And i should mention the lady owner who takes payment- she is very rude. So if you want average, inconsistent food and zero customer service, eat here.

This place used to be better but the food is pretty bad now. Prices are still cheap but quality has dropped. The French toast was soooo disappointing - it used to be crispy and thick but now it’s no where near

The service was so bad there, particularly a woman. It seems I own her money, otherwise why she looked so unhappy.

Ordered a box of takeaway Beef Fried Rice Noodle, exactly the same taste as I had this dish in Hong Kong. Good value and quick service !

Authentic, delicious food and polite staff! Great atmosphere, I ordered the French Toast and some congee. I love how true to HK style the food is! It's great value for money too

The staffs are so rude, how can they scold at customers. And the food is not fresh, I ordered celery chicken rice and the mushroom inside were sour.

3.5/5 stars!
Cheap, solid afternoon tea options. Herbal beef noodle soup was great - a good balance of flavours with slices of tender, juicy beef - would definitely order again.

I like HongKong style cafes. We ordered baked beef with Portuguese sauce and beef w bitter melon. The food tasted good. And there are plenty of options in their menu.

I have adored Hong Kong Kitchen for as long as I can remember!
Food is cheap (ridiculously cheap!), service is fast and efficient
I always go for the Beef Brisket Noodles or Satay Chicken with Rice
The only complaints I have are that sometimes service can be a little shitty - finding hair in food, etc is generally not met with much apology and waiters/waitresses can be quite abrupt and discourteous

But overall I love this place and hope it never closes (also why are the reviews so bad????? It’s no Rockpool but they’re preeetty good at what they do)

Equally as good as their sister branch in Eastwood. Huge menu and loads to choose. I should only choose those we sampled to be fair. 1. Beef with egg sauce rice noodle
2. Bake pork chop rice
3. Spice eggplant with mince pork on rice
4. Beef brisket herbal soup with rice noodle

Yuma- we will be back. Service isn't half bad either but you may have to share table during 'peak' hours.
If you want an authentic, Hong Kong cha caan teng experience for good value then this is the place. Don't expect amazing service, as with any place in HK so don't say I didn't warn you.

We usually get baked Portuguese chicken on rice, beef satay hor fun, braised beef herbal soup, Singaporean noodles and the hot drinks like HK style tea and Horlicks. Always satisfied and tastes how it should, and at a great price for Australia. Definite recommend for cheap eats.

I've been finding it so hard to find an authentic Hong Kong Cha Chaan Teng restaurant in Sydney. I would have to say that Hong Kong Kitchen is the closest thing to the real deal. We ordered their fried rice noodle with beef and egg gravy, beef brisket with rice noodles in soup, ice lemon tea and milk tea. The drinks were spot on, and I particularly appreciated how many lemon slices they put in their tea. The beef soup noodles had a little too much msg in the soup - so much so that it was quite noticeable (albeit very tasty). But the real highlight was the beef wat tan hor, which had just the right amount of 'char' on the noodles. Not sure why the rating for this place is so low, as it seems to have a constant stream of people late into the afternoon. We'll be back to try their breakfast menu.

We walked in with a drink and they didn't say anything to us. And after we have poured it out to share, and had a few sips, they said we can't drink it here. They left us with the options of throwing it out or finishing it, as normal humans, we chose the latter. They came back and told us they have to charge us so we said ok (not that we have any other options). The 3 of us shared 1 drink, and when we saw the bill, they charged us 4. So we asked why, and the lady said we had 4 drinks, which we told her that we had 1 and shared among 3. Then she said if 4 of us shared then she had to charge us 4, so we repeated to her that only 3 of us shared, twice. She just ignored us and served other customers. If she told us that it was per person and it didn't matter how many drank it, it's still unreasonable but more justifiable (I have worked in a Chinese restaurant before and we only charged the number of glasses used, which indicated the number of people who drank the wine, for corkage). But this was purely unjustifiable and illogical!

First time here, ordered a satay beef noodles. This is a must to try if u are eating in a HK style restaurant. It has a big portion which value of money $7.5. But there are too much onion and the beef are too thick which u won't find that in HK.

Pretty good food with this price! Worth to try, it have Asian food, not only Hong Kong, the seat is pretty much like the Hong Kong restaurant. the Vietnamese noodle is so good !!!
Stephanie Bay
It used to be ok quality with minimal customer service. But last night when I dine, I notice that the noodles and rice dish tasted really bland so we asked for soy sauce and chilli, the man at the counter was really reluctant - but we insisted and then he said in Cantonese that we better get cancer because we want it saltier! Maybe it's just our bad luck to meet that man but we will never go back again!
Terrible service bad food. Cheap but no good. It is the worse restaurant we have been to in a long time do not believe the nice pictures you see. Try another place down the road

Awful

Do yourself a favour, Don't go!

It is the worst of what HK kitchens are in HK that they have brought this here.

Service is worse than the worse in HK.

Food is so salty and packed full of MSG.

The floor is like their food, oily and slimy
Michhh
Came here for a quick afternoon tea. Following typical HK style, they have a afternoon tea specials menu with half a dozen items or so. They were around $7-8 each and comes with tea or coffee. If you don't want afternoon tea, of course they also have a regular menu with a huge selection of typical HK cafe must-have-menu-items. It's cheap but the food this time was not that great. The beef brisket noodle was too salty and it wasn't even beef brisket. We got two slices of meat, ramen style. The HK pork bun tasted ok but the bun was burnt. The typical HK style milk tea was good though. Service is swift, seating was spacious and fairly comfortable.
Good place for those after a cheap, no fuss, quick meal.
Hilton
Worst hk food ever.
French toast was flat and soggy with no fluffiness. The peanut "sauce" in the middle tasted like basil.
Beef brisket clear soup is like a pho trying to act like hk style soup...? I will just call it star anise soup with beef slices.
Horlick was so over sweet.
Service was bad.
Not worth spending anything there.
Getinmybelly
•Cheap place to go, fast service, pretty much like an express food court
•Congee (thousand year egg with pork with fried noodles) - traditional honkie food, this will fill you up, nothing special but perfect for a quick bite
Yiun
This is a truly Hong Kong style cafe with a huge variety of food similar to those offered in Hong Kong. I love to go this place for its authenticity in representing the local food in Hong Kong. The milk tea I think is also one of the best I have tasted in Sydney.

Service: 6/10
Food (for its Authenticity) : 8/10
Ambiance: 6/10
Value for money: 8/10

V.Cheap and cheerful place for casual lunch / dinner. salt and pepper spiced pork shops & salted fish chicken fried rice and beef brisket rice / noodle recommended
Vfood
Terrible! Aside for not good service, which I don't mind if food is worth it, serving rotten vegetables and then charging full price for the meal is unacceptable. Check all your veggies before eating them!!

We had such an awful experience at Hong Kong Kitchen in Chatswood. We had a family gathering and ordered a set meal for four priced at $57.80. At the bottom of the laminated sheet promoting the set meals, it clearly is written "free steamed rice and soup." That laminated sheet does not mention anything about a rule of strictly one serving for the free rice. We asked for more rice but we were told it was only for one serve. At first, the waitress refused to grant us the rice refill so one of us decided to raise the issue with management. The manager was extremely rude, offensive and demeaning. He was reeking of an extremely foul attitude as he was stubbornly insisting that they can only give one serving of free rice despite the fact that one of us pointed out that no such rule is mentioned on the promotional sheet and it is clearly written that there is free steamed rice as part of the packaged meal. We were appalled by his rotten attitude as he made the offensive remark that if we are not happy with that, we can go elsewhere. He clearly was caught as being deceiving with the faulty advertising of free steamed rice yet he decided to be arrogant, rude and argumentative. The manager's facial expressions were often grumpy, unfriendly and nasty. We were extremely unhappy with the amount of money that was spent and the poor attitude of management at Hong Kong Kitchen, Please do yourself a service by avoiding Hong Kong Kitchen for a pleasant customer service experience.

This used to be my usual place for quick lunch/afternoon tea after site meetings...... Haven't been back for some months so had the usual set of fried chicken maryland with pepper sauce.... for $10.80 comes with soup of the day (usually spicy MSG borsch), the main meal with either rice or spaghetti and add 60c for iced lemon tea...

However this time something's not right..... nearly all the time their chicken was cooked to perfection but this time it was dry and quite tough on the outside.... the sauce was very peppery & spicy which is not bad but the chef somehow laced too much MSG and burned my tongue afterwards.

Just wondering have they changed chef? Their quality just went down a notch, will try again next time to definitive review.

Well you get what you pay for. $7 breakfast for congee, Chinese donut & steamed rice rolls, with complimentary tea. Good if you're on a budget & hungry. Not so if you want something tasty.

Great delicious food for cheap prices? Look no further! This place has the largest menu I have ever seen at a restaurant. Super cheap but filling and tasty, it really is comfort food for me at least.

You can't go wrong with a Mongolian Lamb or Eggplant and mince stir fry which are both my go to dishes whenever I come here. And the service, while not the warmest or the friendliest, is fast and efficient which means your food will arrive pretty promptly after you order.

The decor isn't amazing but like I said, it isn't that sort of restaurant. Come here for a quick bite and some decent Chinese food, but don't expect anything fancy!

Not coming back. the service is horrible . When there was confusion over the order the waitress argued with my friend to the point where she left the restaurant. That should never happen.
Jules
Good if you're after super cheap breakfast/afternoon tea "cha chaan teng" food, but don't expect it to be quality! Service is pretty unfriendly as well.

Me and my partner come here all the time. If you are looking for great Asian food at a low price, this is the place to go! The Chow Mein combination noodles is a must.

Like chewing rubber. Beef brisket noodles is one of my favourite dishes to order at HK-style cafes. It's hard to resist chunks of tender slow-cooked brisket (and some tendon if you're lucky), swimming in a flavoursome soup and noodles. But the version I had at Hong Kong Kitchen has the dubious distinction of being the worst I've had. The beef was so tough and hard, it was like chewing rubber. Every other piece had thick gristle though it. The soup didn't have much flavour to it, though it was salty. My friend's iced coffee was also overbearingly sweet without much coffee taste. Very disappointing lunch considering it's one of the nicer HK cafes for dining in.

Hidden away on the first level at The Gallery in Chatswood, Hong Kong Kitchen has been feeding locals for as long as I can remember. They've been quite consistent with providing quick and cheap HK style meals (think baked pork chop rice) for a reasonable price. We arrived yesterday during their peak lunch time, and after a quick five minutes wait we were ushered to a freed up corner on a large table. Daily Lunch specials Afternoon tea specials (from 2.30pm) Breakfast specials (10-11.30am) Pork chop with tomato sauce on rice While presentation was virtually non-existant, with the plates almost being thrown down in front of you, the pork chop was hot and crunchy and smothered in just the right amount of tomato sauce. HK style milk tea The HK style milk tea is quite good here, although still not as strong as the ones in HK. The tea was creamy and full-bodied, with the strong taste of black tea still seeping out from underneath the evaporated milk. Braised Beef Brisket noodle soup Althoug

Our food was sour (ie gone off) when we ate here in September 2014 !. The chicken congee in the HK style breakfast tasted slightly sour, a sign that it has gone off. The vermicelli dish that came with the breakfast was simply heated up after being left in the fridge for god knows how many nights (very dry and cold) and tasted even more sour than the congee. My wife and I almost vomited on the spot.

They are lucky that we have not reported them to the Food Authority. A review is the least that one can do to cauton other people against their unscrupulous behaviour.

Another time we were overcharged for the takeaway boxes. I think they charge around 15 cents for one takeway box, and we accepted 3 boxes to take away our leftover food. When I examined my receipt after going home, I realized that they had charged us for SEVEN takeway boxes. That has got to be intentional.

Cheap good honky food! The breakfast is good but after a while the owners became a little cheap, if another person orders fried fish filet they cuts yours in half.

The baked pork chop rice was good but after a féw months they started cutting down the pork chop and upping the rice so it looks the same but less meat. They should go back to what they've originally had instead of trying to cut cost everywhere by giving you less.
Ted McLuu
Typical honky cafe style cuisine plus other Cantonese dishes. Seriously cheap but very good... Not fine dining so don't have high expectations but for a cheap quick nice meal this place is a local favourite

Appalling Service. The service at this restaurant has gone downhill.

We used to be regular diners at this place however the new staff are unbelievably rude. They overcharged us for our meal and they refused to provide us with the correct change.

Always make sure you have have enough money to pay for the meal or they will try to overcharge and make up additional charges are aren't specified on the menu.
