Review Fortune Place - Chatswood

Nice dinner here. We bought a set meal which came with lobster, a main dish and vegetables and additionally honey chicken. The restaurant had complimentary soup and dessert like at normal Chinese restaurants. The lobster was sweet and tender, but the sauce was a bit watery. The drunken chicken was tasty and paired well with the ginger and scallion sauce. The vegetables were crispy and had soy sauce pronounced in it. The honey chicken was sweet and satisfied my craving. The meal overall was a bit expensive being around $170 for 4 people.

Authentic Cantonese food. Place is a little old, but I guess that's why it's reasonably priced. Quick service, very friendly staff. Only down side is cash only which can be inconvenient but no problems.

For the location, quality, ambience and cleanliness, this place is overpriced despite prices being lower than other yum cha joints. All the typical yum cha dishes but they dont quite hit the mark. Good for a traditional yum cha experience though. Can get very busy during weekend lunches

Fantastic dishes. Delicious food and tasty flavoursome. Just the right amount sauce on Noodles

Yummy Dimsum in Chatwoods! any dish @$7 each! worth to try.

Excellent, good value Cantonese food. Reasonably priced seafood (lobster and prawns) and good Peking duck. The lobster with a crispy noodle base is my favourite... And cheap at the moment. Nicely spaced out tables for these COVID times. Bring your family for a feast. We normally go for dinner and have no issues booking a table. They give you free soup and dessert.

Reliably good yum cha in Chatswood's Mandarin Centre. Has been a regular haunt for the locals for ages. Service is good and the prices attractive. It does get busy though. Buy items from the regular trolleys, all the old favourites are prepared well, and now they've priced all standard plates the same.....Great idea!

Small dim sum restaurant with reasonable quality but do not have big range of dim sum vs other larger size restaurant. With comparative cheaper price and friendly staffs plus three hours free parking, worth to try.

The staff is really rude to us.

My friends and I had lobsters at this place today and it's required to pay cash. Since none of us has the enough cash to pay the whole bill, each of us pay their own portion to the poll. One staff walked to our table and say he will help us calculate the cash. Then he never come back with the change but we were very sure we paid more than the bill. We walked to the cashier and asked for our change and she said she thought all the change (more than 30 dollars) is their tips. We were all so speechless that moment. You should at least come back with our change and we should be the one telling you that's our tips to you first before you grab all those money and assume that's your tips.

I’m not sure why this place has such a low rating. We were served hot, fresh food with lots of options available. The service was also OK, always had tea top ups and lots of carts around us. Loved the fried bread and chicken feet.

I was recommended this restaurant, the seafood was reasonably priced and service was generally good. Although I do think the size of the crab served was smaller than what they quoted. Overall it was still a pleasant experience and will be back.

BEWARE RIP OFF. Today my family & I went there, Fortune Place charged $1.50 each for TAP WATER (not bottled water). As per the receipt attached, the $7.50 charged for “SAUCE” is actually TAP WATER, which is a disgrace as every other restaurant I’ve been to never charges for tap water. I complained about this charge when I was presented the bill, but Fortune Place staff refused to remove this rip off charge.

Yumcha price is very reasonable, most of the staff are friendly. However one middle age Shanghainese waitress made us disappointed today, Chinese New Year's day. She was more than rude and grumpy. Considering myself is also Shanghainese, I am hesitated to post it, but just hope she improves in the future.

Service generally good. It has been our usual haunt for dim sum on occasion but last weekend was a let down. Not sure if it’s cause the lunar new year was looming.

Can you believe in the 1.5 hours we were there, we were told that the Siu Mai is ‘on the way’? Most have gotten lost in between the kitchen and the table cause we didn’t get a look in.

Others are alright, yam balls, prawn dumplings (Har Kau), tofu pudding, rice flour rolls, phoenix (chicken) claw and beef balls.
We ordered set menu: lobster with noodles, steamed scallops and chicken. The quality of food is awesome. They are fresh and tasty. The water serving our table is really good . We finished our dinner with red bean soup desert.

I am not sure why this place is rated this low. We are always up for trying new places and felt like yum cha on a Sunday so we decided to come here. It was surprisingly packed and I say surprisingly because it is tucked away in the Mandarin Centre and not a place that's highly visible on the internet. In fact, we had never heard of it before. We took a number and waited but fortunately, we didn't have to wait for more than 15 minutes. Dishes were $5.90 each and the tea was free. I think it's incredible value and the food was good. It's on par with other yum cha places and sure, some yum cha places are better but for the price, it's fantastic and we left satisfied. I thought the service was good, we certainly did not have to chase people up for food and the lady at the cashier (perhaps one of the owners?) was nice and friendly. I'd be happy to recommend this place and I would be glad to come back.

2.5/5We've come here for Yum Cha as well as dinner before. Yum cha is always busy on the weekend, quality is average but price is cheap. Has the usually dumpling options etc.

We came for dinner last night and it was quite disappointing. They might not have foreseen a busy Wednesday night and was therefore very short staffed. An hour after ordering 8-9 dishes, only chicken and soup came. The chicken was very dry.

With our other dishes, pork with pineapple was very heavily breaded, not much meat in there. The other dishes are average but slightly greasy. Vegetables were overcooked and too soft.

The crab was good. It was meaty and flavourful. Easy to eat and cooked in authentic Cantonese way. However, the noodles were clumped together and didn't absorb any sauce, so it was a bit bland.

We had a really good waiter at the end of the night though, he was keen and prompt with his service.
The dessert was on the house and considering that, is not bad at all.

Don't expect too much.

Fortune Palace is perhaps the cheaper option in Chatswood for Cantonese food, but the quality definitely reflects the price. Had a large banquet here and the evening was just continuous disappointment. Somehow they had run out of soup, dishes were forgotten and spoons and bowls were not brought out with the dessert red bean soup. When asked they brought 1 spoon and bowl for a party of 20 people. Food was atrociously sub-par. Ginger shallot crab was easily the worst I've ever had, with overcooked noodles and very little flavour. Same deal with the steamed fish. Most other dishes on same level as your typical takeaway.

Also asked for 1k+ bill in cash, ATO might want to check on this place.

Terrible experience!!! We were seated in a corner of the restaurant where trolleys never came. We had to ask the waitresses to bring the trolleys into the area. We asked a waiter to bring a plate of dumplings and he did not acknowledge our request. When the trolleys brought congee, the spoons they gave were filthy and unhygienic. Most of the trolleys which circulated to our corner were nearly empty and all of the popular food was already taken. All of the people sitting in the middle of the restaurant received the best service and freshest food. Finally, they did not take credit card, even when the bill was high. The worst thing about this situation is that they actually ALLOWED you to pay by credit card if you complained about their cash-only system.
I suggest that the restaurant hire more waiting and cooking staff to increase food production and better service. It was a poor experience and I hope they can improve the restaurant!

I have been to Fortune Place twice, the food is excellent except for the service. We had to wait for 40 mins for our food and this restaurant gets busy when a tour bus drops in and big groups. They need more staff on busy days. Booking is a must.

It was Chinese New Year and we thought we must come out & have a proper Chinese meal in a traditional authentic Chinese restaurant. Since Fook Yuen is now closed, the remaining choices in Chatswood were just not as good. Fortune Place was not even my second choice, but we weren't the only one wanting Chinese food for CNY, and couldn't get a booking at the time that we wanted at other places. Anyway, we got the second seating at 7:30 here, the place was packed! Once seated was given a special Chinese menu for the day, the dishes names are based on well wishing phases. Most people were in big group, ordered lots of seafood and dishes. We weren't that hungry & there were only 3 of us so we only got 3 smaller dishes. That basically mean we got next to no service, we couldn't get order taken, most of the wait staff can't take orders & you have to wait for one of the 3 managers or senior staff taking orders. Finally 45 mins after we arrived, we have food. The BBQ platter was good and had good varieties of meat. The dry scallops with Chinese greens was ok. The stir fried noodles though were terrible, they were soggy and bland, lack of seasoning. Overall not an enjoyable experience, and probably won't be back.

Yum cha spot that hits the spot. Everything we ordered was delicious. The service and variety here is great and the prices are also reasonable.

It was a big disappointment to have had lunch at this place. Very few options for yum cha and not the best tasting. Surprisingly, it was a bit busy for Saturday. My guess, it was because of its relatively cheap price. Not coming back.

One of the most authentic Cantonese food in Sydney, good crabs, free soup and dessert. If you are looking for westernized Chinese, you'll probably be disappointed

Usually come here for lunch with my mum on Sundays and its almost always packed with people during that time. Since its a yum cha there is a very wide variety of foods. I usually get the chicken feet, salt and pepper squid, marinated ribs and a few others but all of them are delicious. Their mango pancake dessert thing is also nice

Waiters there are quite friendly and interactive especially if you are yourself
Simon
Went here for yum cha lunch on a Saturday.
All dishes were $5.90 so the total bill for 3 people ended up at around $40.
Service is prompt and staff friendly.
Some dishes were better than others and as can be expected with yum cha a few were cold by the time they came around to us.
I enjoyed the prawn dumplings but the quality of roast duck was quite low.
Karim
One cart came round with the same cold food for the 20mins we were there. Staff were pushy and unfriendly. Cutlery was dirty and the one dish we did end up getting, after being pushed by staff, was cold and expensive. Don't waste your time here. We thought we'd try this place as it was a public holiday and a lot of other places were closed.... never again

Worst yum Cha I've ever had, and I've had a lot and am not fussy. Cold non-crispy duck for $17. 2 cold dumplings $6. Dirty table and bowl. Poor service. 1 trolley of cold noodles and duck within 30 minutes of waiting. No dumpling trolleys within sight. Cover charge. $29 and left hungry and shocked that places like this can stay open. Save yourself and go down the road to New Shanghai or Shanghai Stories.

Only place open that had a liquor license and was taking reservation. We ordered peking, fried pork ribs, full duck, dim sums and fried rice and noodles. Everything taste fresh and tasty. Portions can be a little larger for the prices they charge. Would recommend .

Bad attitude from waiters. We ordered some fried dishes and it came late, cold and soggy. We asked for it to be warmed up and Waiters looked angry and argued back it is impossible to keep fried dishes warm. Lol.

I've been here lots of times for family dinners and for yum cha. Service has ranged from minimal to excellent. Very typical Chinese restaurant service . Price is reasonable for the standard of food. Not the best, not the worst.
Nancy Reabon
Very filthy cutlery and crockery.
The soup they provide at dinner had been diluted with water and had extra salt added to it.
We were forced to pay cash even after spending about $500 between the 6 of us on live seafood and wines !!
Something fishy with this restaurant's mode of operation maybe?

At lunchtime on wed, there was a waiting queue around the entrance. We gave our name on waiting list and got a waiting number. However they called the number in Chinese!
The venue was occupied full of Chinese speakers. It is normally good sign as the place is popular by native people, however the food was nothing special. It was good tho. We liked pork ribs. Food wagon runs around, no menu on the table. Staff can speak a little English, but that's enough to know what they are serving.
$5.10 for each Dimsum, free Chinese tea. Three hours free parkingis great help. Not rush to go back, but keep in mind for the quick meal.

Food wise it's not that great, although the ease of parking and the availability of seats is good. The price is a factor that always brings me back.

If you are a Caucasian, don't expect to get served!
We have come here a few times and have been ignored by waiters, and trolley ladies have simply shaken their head and refused to serve us. The food is ok, but often cold and little variety.

Fortune Place always has massive crowds of the weekends for Yum Cha and today I was in the mood for yum cha after a good session at 'The Eight' the previous week. I was willing to take the plunge again here despite my mixed experiences here in the past. However, as mentioned previously, Yum Cha chefs like to restaurant hop so that explains why yum cha is never consistent no matter where you go.

Thankfully I was in luck today. The food was all cooked well and served hot unlike many other Yum Cha places where fried food tends to get terribly cold after several laps of neglect around the dining room. It appears Fortune Place has serves small quantities on their trolleys but they come out frequently so you are always getting hot food. This is very smart move and well done to the kitchen!

The Sui Mai was on the small side but perfect nevertheless as was the Har Gau. In fact, all the dishes were very good with the exception of the pork buns where the buns lacked elasticity and the filling showed that the buns had been pre-made and frozen.

The good quality of yum cha dishes explained the crowds as did the fact that all their dishes were a welcoming flat $5.90 price structure.

Retro yumcha place with noise, buzz and crowded tables. I wonder at times how the trolleys get through. Interesting find on a recent visit was the wood eared fungus, solid black in colour, stir fried deliciously on a wholesome plate, with chillis and more. This is such a hub with the demographics of Chatswood and surrounds that if you do not start early, you must wait for your table. The fish balls were not too crash hot that afternoon but the tau fufa, desert styled soya bean curd, was refreshing.

Average Chinese restaurant, the dishes here were not outstanding. The service here was really bad that made my dining experience so bad. Never come again.

Terrible staff and service!. I used to be a regular here, but after today's Yum Cha experience, I will not return again. I know it is Chinese New Year and it can get busy, the sensible thing would be to put more staff on to cope with the demand right? Nope. I came in at 2pm which is an hour before they close. We were promptly seated in a corner next to a private room which we were okay with. We were ignored by many wait staff that walked past us and waited for a good fifteen minutes before they brought out tea and bowls and the stamping card. We waited again for a another 15 minutes until the food cart came around us. But by then, there was pretty much nothing left because there were larger tables and private rooms that seemed more important to attend to (thus those cart ladies went to them first). We got a plate of chicken feet which were shrivelled and disgusting and dry giving us the hint it was pretty old sitting on the bottom of the cart. After eating them, we decided to give them ten minutes to see if anything came out from the kitchen. As we expected whenever it did, the cart would always circulate near the bigger tables and private rooms. There were only about three ladies with carts for a moderately packed restaurant. After a while, a waiter came past by us and asked what we would like to request seeing that our card only had one dish stamped. Ten minutes later he came back with the worst attitude and said that there was nothing left but sticky rice and gave off the suggestion that it was too bad that we bothered to come in the first place. Fed up at 2:40pm I decided to leave and considered not even paying for my one mediocre dish. Even when I paid, the cashier rudely snatched the money off me and dropped the coins in the process. We decided to head to King Fook at Westfield immediately and at least there was food going around.

Long story short, Fortune Palace need to learn how to do business. If your staff can't be bothered heating up and making more dishes at 2pm because you are going to close at 3pm, don't bother letting customers in. I feel sorry for the poor souls who came in after us. If you know it will be busy being Chinese New Year, add more staff on. Lastly, maybe you should consider training and fixing your staff attitude.

After a day spent on graduation ceremony, of course we had to celebrate and we head off to our Aunt's recommended Chinese restaurant in Chatswood - Fortune Place Chinese Restaurant .

Terrible food and aweful service. The food quantity is minimum. Absolutely wrong decision. Probably the worst dinner we ever had.

They need to employ more staff- highly disorganized and inadequate service. Awful service. I wonder how this place has managed to last for a year in Chatswood, where there is strong competition among Chinese restaurants.

1) Food takes a long time to arrive, and waiters have not got enough time to respond to you. These are two signs that the owners are not employing enough staff (waiters and kitchen staff).

2) They discourage payment by EFTPOS and credit cards despite it being a live seafood Chinese restaurant (when it first opened in 2013 they only accepted cash especially when giving 20% discount). Yet another Chinese restaurant whose owners are too stingey to want to pay for merchant fees for credit cards, but at the same time want to go upmarket and sell live seafood.

3) Highly disorganized service which highlights the fact that the owners are too stingey to employ more staff. I have encountered errors on a number of occasions while dining here. We ordered crab cooked with ginger and shallot, and despite the waiter double-checking this order with us, they managed to come out with crab cooked in a rich butter sauce and insisted that we had ordered crab with butter sauce. We requested them to change it. All they did then was simply toss the butter sauce out and brought the same crab back out with very little ginger and shallot, and still lots of butter flavours.
