Review Kam Fook - Chatswood

Matt
What a disaster! Where do I start - the service is awful. The head waitress was incredibly rude and had no idea how to ensure patrons have a good time. We were after a table for 6 and they gave us a table for 5 jammed next to another. When we asked to move to another larger table we were rudely told No, sit here! She stood there and asked us for our order and when we asked for a menu she threw a plastic leaflet at us. We asked for a copy and got another stern No. The food was terrible. We asked for Beef and got the ligament - just fat. The dumplings were full of gristle and fat without much in the way of actual meat or vegetables. The only thing edible were the prawn dumplings - barely. You'd be better off going to the supermarket and buying a packet of frozen dumplings. You'd cook them better, they'd taste better, and you'd have no one standing over you the whole time making you feel uncomfortable. The best part of our meal there - leaving. Don't go, save your time. Plenty of better places to eat.

Though there are so many bad reviews, I still went there with friend today for the first time. I believe the communication might be the most outstanding issue for the restaurant with English speaking customers. But other than that, the service is good and food is not bad either. We were greeted warmly by every waitress and waiter. They explained in detail what they have in their cart. Refill the teapot is also free. I am happy with the experience anyway.

way overpriced ( $15.80 for steamed greens) dumplings and pork buns etc not that nice. worst duck pancakes ever. We paid $107 for 2 people and a toddler no drinks just tea. terrible. do not go!

I love coming to this restaurant on a Sunday for brunch. The dim sum are always the best. It's always busy and the wait is long. I do recommend going with a group of friends to get in faster. Some things to try include the prawn dumplings, ham sui gok, chive and scallop dumplings, pork buns... just try everything you won't be disappointed.

I am a massive fan of yum cha, in particular of steamed dumplings. I was moderately disappointed though as the spinach and prawn dumpling was rather bland and lacking of the appropriate prawn to spinach ratio. The other dishes were "meh". I don't think i'll be back. The decore is nice though. Shame about the food. I don't think I'll be back. I've been twice now and have had the same reaction. I'd probably go elsewhere like the food court. You'll get more return on your investment. Price: About 25 per person

Today, I visited Kam Fook with my daughter to have yum char. Just before we started we were served with water as we requested for water and not tea. A waiter brought a little plate of chilli sauce and left it on our table. I did not ask for it and he did not mark it on the little piece of paper where we ordered for timsums. At the end when I finished I went to pay and they charged me $1.30 twice. I asked the reception why am I charged for $1.30 twice. She said that it was for the chilli sauce and because we had 2 people we were charged twice. I told her that I did not ask for the chilli sauce in the first place and was not told that it had to be charged and secondly, that I should be given 2 plates if I am charged twice. She said it it charged by per head and if there were 5 people I would be charged 5 times. I told her that it is a rip off and a bad way of making money. So make sure you don't take the chilli sauce and be charged like me and who knows you have been visiting the restaurant and charged for the chilli sauce which you were not aware that you have been paying. It is outrageous and totally ripping off. This is the last time I am visiting the restaurant.

We went there for Chinese new year dinner. We waited 1 hr for the first dish and it took another 3 hrs before the rest of the banquet came. Because they were so slow in cooking for everyone, they took one of our main dishes and gave it to the table next to us because they had been waiting for 1.5hrs with nothing to eat. The dishes came out cold and were fairly average.

The food was cold and terrible. This event was for elder people and food was terribly cold and tasteless since they didnt even heat up the food; the waiters/waitress did not even bother to allocate the dishes for them. I strongly recommond people from Chinese Australian Association not to choose this restaurant ever again. 端出来的菜跟饭都是冷的 吃起来像是昨天剩下来的剩菜剩饭 这样对老人太不尊敬了。

This restaurant has been here for as long as I remember. Always popular for yum cha especially on weekends, a big dinner was organised here for a change. There is a huge variety & selection of dishes from the menu, most are delicious and very typical of the Cantonese style. The restaurant is busy so perhaps that's why service can be a little hit and miss and clinical, but with so much commotion going on, its nothing to focus on or worry about as it is still super efficient.

service not as great now and the food is a bit average, massive lines outside which is confusing, probably due to it being located near a shopping centre. Better option for yumcha such as fook yuen imo

I was shocked to find a long length of human hair as I wen deeper into my Tau FuFa (soy bean curd) dessert. The King Dynasty says they are meat and steak specialists.  Located at the former site of Kam Fook, it may be a good stop by before or after a Hoyts cinema show and in between shopping.  The morning we were at this restaurant, all fourteen of us, we had a corner table, as big as Chinese as they come, with a strategic view of the early yum cha crowd.Taro deep fried as in Woo Kok  ( or yam puffs)  芋角   stood out crunchy and not over salty.  The barbecue pork buns were my next favourite, with fluffy dough and appetising char siew inside.   I enjoyed the smooth and yummy veg lightly sauteed in oyster sauce.  The mango pudding in a plastic cup was a tad dry, much a disappointment to my preferred bouncy texture as you scoop in.  The baked Char Siew So was a winner, a fav amongst my non-Chinese mates.   Chinese favoured congee was there, the ubiquitous version with century old egg and minute bits of chicken - and it was served rather delightfully warm despite a cold morning outside. Our table had the compulsory steamed bamboo offerings of Siew Mai and Har Gou, both in bite sized cups packed tightly with stuff like pork and prawns.  They were above average on my palate. I would not recommend the so called Singapore noodles, looking limpid and lacking taste. The dining hall is huge for Sydney, maybe this was amplified by the height of the ceiling.  There seems to be a higher level of private dining upstairs, on one side.  The traditional wedding mural is placed permanently on another side for dinners.  The hall can seat 500 people.   When we were there, by 1pm and when we were leaving, the whole place looked packed in and it could have been challenging even to try to find our way out.Next, may be to try their dinner? The King Dynasty Chinese Restaurant is located at Shop 600 on Level 6 of the old wing at Westfield Chatswood, best accessible from Anderson Street in Chatswood NSW.   Opening hours are from 11am to 3pm every week day for lunch; from 10am to 3pm on weekends; and from 530pm to 1030pm every night.Contact + 61 2 9412 9388Fully licensed, yum cha for lunch times. My impressions of the King Dynasty Chinese Restaurant in Chatswood NSW:Ambiance: 2.5 out of 5

Always came here for a family yumcha.. They are delish, have a pretty wide dining space so u dont really have to queue for that long.. Its quite exxy though when compare to the ones in eastern suburb :p
No Guilty Pleasures
Speaking from a person of Cantonese background, the dim sum are authentic, fresh and delicious. Staff are not usually friendly but it's common in most authentic Chinese restaurants. The egg tarts (large size) are always a favourite and runs out quickly due to popularity.

This place needs two ratings - 3.5 for food and 0.5 for service. <br/><br/>On a normal day the food is always alright. However the service is always so horrible and I have stopped going there for that reason. The waiters there are beyond rude. I wouldn't even go anymore even if they offer the best yumcha. I don't think any customer deserves to be treated this way no matter how good the food is.

Yum Cha on a Sunday. 7 of us enjoyed a wide range of pastries, dumplings and roast duck The food was delicious and it came hot and fast. Walked out full and happy.

There isn't many choices when it comes to yum Cha in Chatswood. It has became the go-to place for yum Cha. The food is good but don't expect any good service. Just go there for the food ok.

Horrible experience. Used to love kamfook and go there at least twice a month. I will NEVER go there again. Am used to the service being poor. Today they really out did themselves- 1 pot of tea between 7 people with not one offer of a refill the whole time, had to beg for soy sauce and water- eventually getting up each time to ask a waiter at the bar for each. Then to top it all off they gave us the wrong bill. We just paid the bill and they treated us like criminals because we did not pay the correct bill! They gave us no explanation of what the problem was and tried to get the receipt out of my friends wallet (when is it ok to put ur hands in someone else's wallet?????) anyway- we paid the difference but am never going back there! Now there are numerous other places to get great dumplings in Chatswood with much better customer service, kamfook or King Fook what ever u call yourselves u might want to work on customer service!

Very disappointed at the service and attitude of lady taking payment. We were told to go in by the lady in front of the restaurant. When we got in, we didn't know which table was ours, so I asked the lady at the cash register twice and twice she ignored me. After walking around looking lost, we finally asked a waiter and they set up a table for us. The food was ok, the ladies bringing the food were polite. When we were paying for our meal, again the lady at the cash register was very rude and absolutely no eye contact. I asked where I could get my parking ticket validated and she said ''Outside" I queried again, and with no other explanation, she rolled her eyes and said "Outside". I would not go back there again, such a disappointment!

I think there’s only two big places for Yum Cha in Chatswood , and this is one of them. It does get quite packed on the weekends during lunch for yum cha…so beware of having to wait and get your number called out… The food is okay, pretty average…I won’t say it is bad… The price…depending what you order…but can end up to be around 20 dollars per person…so average price… They do a quite alot of difference varieties of dishes, which is a good thing about this place…

It was a wonderful evening of celebration. In terms of food, the highlight for me was the lobster (loved the flavour), the suckling pig and fried seafood roll that came as starters.<br/>

The duck pancake is always a must! Crisp skin, tangy hoi sin sauce, light pancake. Yummo!

...Yin Yang fried rice A favourite for the young and old. This beautiful rice is presented as the name suggests, in the shape of ‘yin yang’, with chicken, onion and a tomato base side tucked up next to a creamy prawn side...

Overall it was an okay experience. Not the best dim sum, but not the worst either.

The highlights for me were the lovely prawn dim sum that we had first which were full of large pieces of prawn. We also had some lovely moist beef balls. The bill was $18 a head which I thought was very reasonable considering the amount of food we had. Do you like the photo? I do. 4 comments: ugg said... Although Kam Fook has improved in recent times, the best yum cha in Chatswood is still Fook Yuen on Help St. 11 March 2010 09:26
Eating In Sydney
... the dumplings were quite nice and the calamari was good too. It wasn't too expensive either. One thing that annoyed me is that they kept bringing us the same dishes :( All the new stuff was making the rounds everywhere except our area. In the end I had to ask them for specific dishes or risk eating the same dumplings all day! Location: Westfield Chatswood Shopping Centre. Level 6, Shop 600, 1 Anderson Street. Chatswood NSW. The fish was just ok.... not great though and they could have provided a lot more spring onions and sauce. The vegetables was just a tad overcooked. I loved the dessert, except for the limited choice of fruits

The line for this place was crazy long. We were told it would be a 2 hour wait for a table for 5 but luckily we managed to find an 'express' lane..

..crunchy savoury dumplings that have a slight sweetness and chewiness about them. It's a delightful contradiction all in one.

We love Yum Cha but we always couldn’t find a decent Yum Cha restaurant in Brisbane. Every time we go to Sydney we would try different Yum Cha  restaurants, we were told  Kam Fook at Westfield Chatswood has really good reputations. We arrived at 10am and the restaurant was already opened with diners having breakfast. We had a few baskets of  Dim Sim,  they were certainly much better than Brisbane’s but the ones in Hong Kong are still way much better Har Gow  ( Steamed Prawn Dumpling) – I love the thin dumpling skin, it’s chewy but tasty! This prawn dumpling had a really generous servings of prawn meats Little Monster’s  favourite is the Steamed BBQ Pork Bun  ( Char Siu Bao ). I particular loved the Fried Turnip Cake  - it’s full of julienne turnips which made it so flavoursome. Same as the  Turnip Cake  the  Fried Rice Rolls  were cooked in front of you, of course not the whole procedures, but just the final step of frying in a specialised “frying cart”. This is a traditional w

Been here 2-3 times a month for the last 10 years. I know not to expect 5 star service, but to be yelled at by Simon the manager at the table in front of my 2 year old is disgusting. We had gone in and been seated straight away as it was pretty empty being 11am on a Monday. No one came near us for the first 15 mins when my husband got up and asked Simon the manager for a pot of tea. 10 mins later he walked past our table and my husband again asked him for the pot of tea. He then yelled at us and told us we should have asked other staff and that he was having a staff meeting standing in the middle of the restaurant and not to talk to him. We then decided to leave and were talking to the payment staff saying that we weren't happy paying after what had happened when Simon wrote his name on a piece of paper and threw it at me yelling 'go complain go complain' while walking past me thru the restaurant still shouting at us. will never go back.

Shocking service. Went to this restaurant at 2pm. Lots if people inside. Waited 20 min and not a single trolley went by. Was starving by that stage. Tables next to me were also looking around to order food with no luck. Finally got a staff member's attention to ask about food. She told me I can order what I want but didn't give me a menu and just expected me to know the names of what I wanted. I thanked her and left. Never going back.

Awful Yum Cha Service. Took the family for a quick Yum Cha meal today only to be confronted by surly and indifferent service staff. We waited for 15 minutes before we had a cart swing past. Then followed by another lengthy wait. We were about to leave and the kids wanted a steamed pork bun. So I asked one of the waiters to be told to wait for it to come around. I then asked for the cheque...

Yum Cha. 1. food - delicious! more variety of dishes if arrive before 12:30pm.<br/>2. customer service - poor<br/>3. atmosphere - have to queue (the queue is shorter before 12pm); noisy, but still able to converse with other diners on the table

Too expensive for what you get.. $5 for a can of solo, $21 for a lettuce entree, $25 for a vegetarian stir fry with barely any sauce not including any rice! No way and no thank you... I'd rather pop down the street I. One of the many other Chinese restaurants. I suppose they pay a premium for their location next to Hoyt's but to me the food wasn't worth it.

Noticed today Kam Fook is now King Fook. A name change will not make the food any better, nor the service! Not surprised the restaurant is barely half full. I won't be going back. Dreadful

Worst yumcha in Chatswood, yet it's the busiest so the staff couldn't care less. We are totally fine with waitstaff who are less than enthusiastic, it comes with the territory but staff who see you wave & they turn away as if they don't see you?! <br/>Plus the same old dumpling trolly kept getting rolled by but no tendon, chickens feet or tripe! I asked the staff if we could order it & she assured me it will come, 2 hours later & it didn't! We weren't the only people trying to chase down staff to get food. To top it off the food is well below average despite the flashy interiors... A real shame most diners there have no idea what good yum cha is... Go to Fook Yuen on Help<br/>St for much better & fresher food

The worst yum cha I ever have in Sydney...

Terrible food, ridiculously overpriced. Today I went to the restaurant in Chatswood and I was VERY disappointed about the service and the food.<br/><br/>The girl at the entrance was rude, the food was bad and it was ridiculously overpriced.<br/><br/>We only tried 2 things and we had to go somewhere else to have a better meal.

Kam Fook Chatswood Delivered us a Lesson in Fine Dining. We recently decided to have a family meal at the Kam Fook restaurant in Chatswood to celebrate my Father’s Birthday and the impending marriage of my nephew.<br/><br/>We were dining in a group of about 30 people and were split across 3 adjacent tables. So we decided each table would just order for themselves.<br/>After about 30 minutes the other two tables had begun eating but ours was yet to be served.<br/><br/>One of the young waiters who had successfully avoided eye contact up until then made the mistake of taking a path too close to our table. I was able to grab him and ask if he could take our order. <br/><br/>"No I can't ... but he can" he said as he gestured to a more mature gentlemen who looked like a version of Gollum dressed by Reuben F Scarf.<br/><br/>Sméagol in a suit begrudgingly came to our table and we ordered drinks, some beers, cokes for two 15 year old boys and I ordered a bottle of wine. <br/><br/>When the wine arrived the sommelier carefully placed the bottle and glasses in front of the 15 year old boys on the opposite side of the table to where I was. No doubt he thought they were dutiful children and wanted to give them the opportunity to show off in public by serving the drinks for their parents.<br/><br/>A procession of dishes followed, won ton soup, Peking duck, noodles, soya chicken - most of which rivalled the fine standard one would expect in any shopping centre food court.<br/><br/>One notable highlight was an interesting "Satay Onions with Chunky Chicken soup/gravy". We had luckily stumbled on one of their signature dishes.<br/><br/>The steamed coral trout was slapped on the table and the waiter ambled away presumably in search of serving utensils. Five minutes later - after noticing him deliver a volley of meals to other tables - I realised it was up to me to filet and serve the fish to my fellow guests. Some of the diners at other tables tried to catch my attention to come and do the same for them. Regretfully I had to explain that I was not staff – but thanked them for thinking that I still looked like a university student.<br/><br/>When we originally ordered we had asked for some fried rice to be served with the first dishes as our teenagers are fussy eaters. It arrived not long before the plate of sliced desert fruits. Clearly we were ignorant of the etiquette that dictates the order in which dishes should be eaten in a Chinese restaurant. Thankfully the waiters rescued us from the faux pas of eating fried rice too early in the evening.<br/><br/>Finally it came time to settle the bill (that came to about $3000 for our party). While waiting I asked a young man at the bar could he get my sister a pink lemonade. The boy did that and when he went to the register to add it to our bill there was an excited exchange. He came back and asked me for $5 as the bill had already been totaled. Curses - someone must have warned them about my usually successful ploy to secure a free glass of lemonade.<br/><br/>If you do decide to try your luck at the Kam Fook keep an eye out for a unique touch of decorative flair that I am sure will be mimicked by other restaurateurs. In the bathrooms next to each basin the Cusson's hand wash pump pack hand wash pack had been carefully lassoed to the cold water tap with some sort of stringy twine. Maybe they need to downgrade to home brand soap to curb the worrying increase in theft of personal care products from commercial premises in Chatswood.

This restaurant is reported in the Sun Herald on 7 April 2013 to be the worst serial offender on the Food Authority's "Name and Shame Register".

I am being very generious but the food in lam fook is crap! It was simply the worst Chinese food in Chatswood.

Worst experience ever. Extremely slow, crap service with bitchy attitude. Below average quality of food for an overpriced menu.

If you like food swimming in MSG, this is the place for you! I thought it was REVOLTING!

Their seafood is generally outstanding. The steamed barramundi in soy with mushrooms and prawn vermicelli hotpot are great. Order them even though they are not on the menu and you will be rewarded.
