Review Mr Chef Dumpling - Clayton

Valyn White
The eel and 鱼香肉丝 are amazing. Friendly staff. Cleanliness might need a little work. 锅贴 is actually disappointing as hell. They just fried the standard dumplings with standard dumpling filling (including veg). Everyone knows 锅贴 is made with meat only!! Come on now, don't be lazy. Great to try if you're in the area. Word of warning, if you're worried about MSG, stay away. 😂😂😂

A popular place for cheap, fuss-free, casual dining in Clayton. Portions were generous and all dishes tasted good, especially the fried rice cake with spinach and pork. Staff were attentive and friendly. Will be back again to try the Shanghai fried noodles.

Best dumplings in Clayton. Had the pan fried pork and pan fried beef dumplings, and Shanghai fried noodles. They all were great. I recommend the pan fried pork dumplings. Priced at around $15/dish.

We wanted dim sum so we schlepped all the way out to Clayton … and it was worth every moment of that journey. I can still smell the delicious chilli out and vinegar on my fingers hours later. We had steamed, pan fried and boiled pork dumplings, cold chilli chicken, braised brisket, spring onion pancakes and chive cakes. We rolled out full and happy and surprisingly had some cash left in our pockets!

The best fried pork dumplings I’ve ever had!! Crispy skin with super juicy and flavourful filling inside. Not to mention it’s super cheap. Get in early if you’re going on the weekends cuz this place fills up FAST!

The food came out lightning fast. Cheap and consistently good dumplings. Each dumpling has a generous filling wrapped around a nice thick skin. No frills service. However, the tables and floors can be a little oily and sticky.

Ordered spring onion pancake, Shanghai noodles, and pan fried pork dumplings. All dishes were delicious!! Average service (but you don’t go there for the service), average atmosphere as the door was broken so it was very cold inside! Will continue to visit pings for the delicious meals.

Quick, cheap, no-frill and the food was surprisingly taste not too bad. This place is one of the more successful restaurant in Clayton judging by its crowdier patronage. The customers are mixed, maybe 60-40, between asians and non-asians.

Ordered Mongolian beef, was a bit too oily, Stir-fry vege was ok though.
Terrible and very rude service. Came in as a single diner and when I tried to get the attention of the waitress to order, was told to come to the counter. Apparently you only qualify for table service if you have two or more diners. Ridiculous as I had previously had my order taken many times at table as a single diner. Lazy waitress I think.

Definately better atmosphere than the shop next door. Prices are like 80c more for that benefit. Dumplings are good, but the Chao Kwai Teo was disappointing in that there was no real meat (or very little) and only had processed stuff like fish cakes, Chinese sausage

Went there for lunch and shocked by the dumplings they had. I ordered the pork dumplings and it was not even fully cooked, the customer service was shocking too. Not going back.

Actually one of my friend was the one who recommended this restaurant to me. I ordered steamed pork dumpling and crispy chicken on rice. The dumplings are delicious, they were soft and steamy with the soup inside which makes it even more tasty. The pork in each dumplings are a lot 👍🏻 the chicken skin were crispy and the meat are very soft, it has some sauce that makes the dish delightful

Took 40 minutes for my dishes to be served at 8pm on a Thursday night. While the taste is ok, it is not worth the wait. The customers sitting on the next table was so hungry that he went to buy some bread while waiting. Hahah. They prioritise delivery order more than in house diners unfortunately.

Waited over half an hour for waiters to come take our order even though they weren’t even busy. Couple that came after us ordered and had their food before our order was even taken (because they were known to one of the waitresses). Had to call the waiters over so many times before they actually noticed. Portions were good, dumplings 8/10. Rest of the food 4/10

I've never thought to go here but the menu looked good from the window and I was pleasantly surprised. A well priced menu with some delicious flavours.

The waiters were very friendly and the food was full of flavour. We enjoyed the chili wonton and the dumplings.

My go to dumpling place in Clayton! Much cleaner than their next door neighbour with better service too. love their fried pork dumplings. Would recommend 👍🏻
Valerie
Went here on Friday night for a dumpling fix. Ordered Fried pork dumpling, Shanghai fried noodle, and Wanton in chilli oil. Service was quick. The dough for the dumplings were thicker than what we usually have but they are chewy and crispy. Fried noodle and wonton are both yummy!

3.5

I know I shouldn’t have been out and about with a nasty flu on board, but it was that time of the week for grocery shopping.

Although my appetite wasn’t at its best, we were already in Clayton so it only made sense to have some lunch before heading home.

Tempted by the picture of the Claypot Lamb Brisket on the window, my partner suggested we give it a go. Why not, it was a chilly day after all.

Settling into our seats, he ordered that straight away with some rice while I browsed the menu. Starting with a Hot And Sour Soup in hopes of pacifying my cold, the spicy and tangy elements could’ve been tweaked up a notch. However, given how I felt that day, it met the brief.

Now I’ll be straight up that my taste buds weren’t fully functional then, so from hereon it’ll be purely based on my partner’s feedback.

An absolute ideal winter’s dish, the claypot lamb was moreish and hearty with chunks of perfectly cooked brisket and a delicious gravy laced with hints of star anise. We had a side of Stir Fried Seasonal Vegetables to balance out its richness and the rice tied everything together.

For someone who wasn’t feeling that hungry, I knew I was being over ambitious in getting the Soy Duck but it was just too appealing. Despite the fragrance that one normally associates with braised duck falling a little short, it was still pleasant.

True enough, I couldn’t finish my dish. My partner tried helping out only to fail miserably because the brisket had already defeated him by then, so we packed up the remainder to go.

It’s a shame that my flu-ridden buds wouldn’t allow me to enjoy lunch that arvo. At least my partner did and service was lovely.

The vegetarian steamed dumplings and buns were some of the best I’ve tried. They had both greens and shiitake mushrooms! The combination of flavours were delicious!

What a rubbish restaurant! Beware that they are not selling a real meat in here, add a lot of CHEMICAL SODA powder to make the meat get over soft. The worst Chinese restaurant in Clayton. They said that’s how it is, very impolite to their customer. Doggy people serve doggy foods and feeding pig.

It is a 4.5. The dumplings are the real Shanghai style ones (with a slightly thicker skin than Hong Kong style ones) and the filling is definitely good, juicy and not fat. They are really substanceus. The smoked fish I had was very nice. The menu is ample and affordable. The service is good and prompt. The atmosphere is light and happy. I will certainly go back and I can recommend it

The food basically was okay, I give 7/10 but sadly the fish was not the same as when I had it in shanghai, this one not fragrant and sweet enough. Chives cake was uncooked on the inside and it seems frozen as the chives was not fragrant, service was good and the restaurant itself was spacious and comfortable. Overall not bad and will go back for their Dumpling and shanghai noodle.

Best vegetarian dumplings of any dumplings restaurant I’ve tasted. Fried rice full of flavour. Nice, friendly, prompt service. This place may require a bit of a wait on weekends. Well done!!

Visited for first time last night (Saturday ) - 7.30pm - 80% full.

Two of us - we shared 1 x fried beef dumplings, 1 x fried chicken/prawn dumplings, 2 x steamed bbq pork buns. The chilli oil was like watered down soup with hint of chilli - not good enough for an Asian eatery. All other aspects excellent.

Excellent quality and flavour. Price-value equation leans to customer side.

Attentive staff, BYO and licensed, clean, simple surroundings. Go again for sure.

Nice, clean venue. Low prices, lots of choice. Dumplings were ok. Wontons were good but the rest of the soup was bland. Not a bad choice for quick, economical meal.

Always have the pork dumplings. The price is nice for that. And the environment inside the shop is very nice. Looks neat and great. The service is great.

THE BEST dumplings I have ever eaten and believe me, I've eaten many. Nice clean restaurant, friendly staff, great food and very reasonably priced. Will definitely be coming back

A bit quite for dinner time. Wait staffs are pretty friendly. Girl at the counter was pretty arrogant. Fried kway teow was very oily. Taste pretty good. Brisket noodle - brisket taste good. Noodle too soft. Over cooked. Dumpling skin nicer and not too thick. Fried bun too dry.

It’s surprising why the place is still at 3.5 ratings. I wanted to try Chinese and rather than entering the most sought after place for Chinese in Clayton, I went to Mr Chef, as my flatmate is a fannn of their vegetarian dumplings. I was in a hurry for takeaway so I ordered their spicy chicken on Rice. It was so goood! It would suit the tastes of Indians so well, and the quantity was good enough. I saved one star on the ratings because I want to try more things on their menu. But everytime I tried their rice-dishes with meat, it was worth it

4.0

A clean Chinese restuarant derving a variety of dishes. Well laid out interior but the tables are small to fit all doshes on the table for 2.

Great service and the staff are attentive due to the table being small they offered to take away the condiments whilst we ate to make it more spacious.

We ordered the Vegetarian fried noodles which was well charred, generous amount of for a serve and worth the price. The Pork fried dumplings are quite large and stuff with a crispy skin. The crispy pork buns are average.

I wanted to try something near work other than our usual dumpling place, so decided to come here after reading some reviews. Firstly everyone is right about the chilli oil, it is so fragrant and that gives it an edge above others! I ordered the soup dumplings and the pan fried juicy pork buns. The soup dumplings were delicious, and the casing held together really well! I just wish the pan fried pork buns had a richer soup within, because they were dry inside. Staff were lovely and welcoming. I would definitely return for the xiao long bao.

Good service, reasonable price, dumplings were good too!come here many times. Compare other Chinese restaurant in Clayton. This one is good enough.

The vegetarian dumplings are vegan and are delicious! I had the fried ones. My mum ordered the pork steamed dumplings and they they were really good too. We both love the spinach and broccoli with garlic.
The staff are very nice and attentive. They made sure to warn me of what sauces weren’t vegan and which items on the menu that we were considering weren’t vegan. The decor is very nice and overall, it’s really great value for the price.

A lot of people come here and go to Ping’s which is just next door, and don’t come in here for some reason - maybe it doesn’t look as busy... but this place is cleaner, great and tasty! Highly recommend this place for dumplings in Clayton! Their fried pork dumplings, Shanghai noodles is what I usually order and am never disappointed 👍

Had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon.
The decore was very cafe like, which is a standout from other dumpling restaurants. We tried the steamed and fried dumplings. Both were tasty and would definitely go back again!

The stir fried combination seafood noodles smelled delicious(smokey), all the noodles were well cooked and not broken into small pieces. It's also very hot through out.
The mapo tofu with rice is delicious as well. It's not salty. It's not spicy...in a chilli sense, but it's a little bit peppery spicy.
Would have given 4 star...but gave 3 stars due to the undrinkable water provided. The water have a funny taste...no, its' not chlorine. I had one mouthful and stop at that... 8-} .
Complimentary Chinese tea would make the food much more enjoyable.

Checked with staff if the dish contained peanuts.
A female staff smiled and nodded no peanuts.

After tasting it and having a mini heart attack, one of the other male waiters/managers confirmed that it definitely had peanuts.
He offered to cook the same dish without peanuts and any complimentary drinks.

As we left, the original female waiter had the audacity to say it was sesame sauce.

I wish i could give this place a 0 rating after checking their falsified reviews on being the best dumpling place.
Actual Rating : 3.5.

The restaurant is located in the heart of Clayton, parking close-by can be a bit hard to find depending on the time of the day. The place itself is nice and small with some nice decor. The hostess i interacted with while picking up my takeaway order was courteous and had a smile. Ordered the Chicken & Prawn Dumpling, Spring Onion Pancake and the Spicy Chicken with Rice. The Dumplings were fairly run of the mill nothing much to complain about, they were juicy, the chilli oil with it was good although i did find the skin of the dumpling just a tad bit too thick for my liking. The Spring onion pancake was nice and crunchy but had too much oil on it, maybe something that can be improved in the future. The Spicy Chicken had a nice flavor to it and went well with the rice although i was expecting a bit more heat from it but was fairly timid imo. The place does accept card payments but there is 50c surcharge to peruse this option.

Shop is clean, staff are friendly and polite, I think best dumplings in Clayton, I’d never go anywhere else now after I’ve tried this place. The chilli sauce is amazing. Eftpos available, I hate going to restaurants that are cash only.

This is our new must-go place, the best chinese food in south east Mel

Been frequenting this new restaurant since it opened its door, highly recommend it!

Food shows they are made with fresh good quality ingredients, as we never left with bitter / thirsty after taste. Clean, bright ambience, prompt service. Very affordably priced

Will be back for sure

Yesterday because PING, S dumpling line up, so came to this newly opened restaurant for lunch, ordered pork dumplings and chicken dumplings, waiting for a long time, but the taste of dumplings does not feel fresh.

We usually go to Ping's Dumpling, but tonight we thought we'd give Mr Chef Dumpling a go. The food was delish! We ordered fried chicken and prawn dumpling, chicken fried rice with chinese spinach and red bean fied pancake to compare to Ping's Dumpling. Definitely Mr Chef is better! Their service is also very pleasing to see with smiles on waitress face. Clean and not chaotic. Great addition to Clayton food strip. Keep up the great work!
