Review Chorba Cafe - Coburg

Sinan Bayram
Delicious food, quick service, a bit on the pricey side however well justified as the quality and quantity were both exceptional. In the photo are the turkish breakfast, big breakfast and a side of sucuklu yumurta. The only complaint I can make is that the person that served us really needs a lesson in customer service. She looked completely disinterested and did not make us feel welcome at all. A smile and some tone in her voice would be great. Other than her everyone else was lovely.

I had a wonderful breakfast at this place. There are many options to choose from and the prices are reasonable. As I sat there eating, I felt like I was in Turkey 🥰 When your meal becomes an experience, you know it's a good meal.

Love this place very popular and food is always great and consistent. Try out there Sigara Borek cigar borek.

The food hear is top notch and really cheap. Heaps of good options so I don't think reckon I'll ever get sick of it. Highly recommend if you're in the area and you want a great brunch spot

Such a homey cafe which makes you feel like your Turkish family is cooking up a meal for you. I ordered the Shakshouka/Menemen and it was fantastic. Paired with Turkish tea, you can’t go wrong. Seating can be a little crammed inside but they do have outdoor seating too.

Definitely the best Turkish restaurant I’ve been to in Melbourne. We drove from Prahran to Coburg to experience Chorba Cafe. Everything was incredible from the traditional decor to the kind and inviting service and nowhere else can top the traditional home-made Turkish food. Doesn’t matter where you are in Melbourne, if you haven’t been to this place it’s worth every minute of your trip. Highly recommended!!

Nice, small place to have Turkish breakfast and lunch. They do take bookings but still there could be a bit of wait as the place is small and quite busy. Food was simply yummy.

Delicious breakfast and coffee. Super friendly staffs providing amazing customer service. Will come back again!

It’s my very first time to try Turkish breakfast and I absolutely love it!!! The dish matches well with Turkish tea with a bit of sugar in it.

Interesting little cafe / restaurant one one of the laneways off Sydney Road. It’s busy and with good reason. The food is very good. The gozleme was delicious, the Turkish breakfast was even better. The tea was strong, the staff were friendly and I was happy. I will definitely be back!

Fantastic little place in a lovely lane way. Delicious Turkish home cooking. Awesome gozleme, warm chicken salad, pasta, lamb. Very friendly and generous owners
~ The Real Review ~
Ordered the big breakfast for 2 & the sucuk with eggs all the food was great & I enjoyed it. But the Gozleme could of came with a slice of lemon & a carrot dip which I asked for & they gladly gave me them at no cost which was good of them.

The disappointment of this place was that there was no table service despite having table menus. The Asian girl server wasn’t very knowledgeable about the menu & didn’t understand English properly.

A keeper! We came a few months back when it was part of a group activity, and were determined to come back because it was so good. This visit was even better.

Had the vegetarian meals (felafels, salad, pita bread, hommus and yogurt dip), with Turkish coffee, Turkish tea and two Turkish birds nest pastries. Swiftly served, big smiles, generous serving sizes, ultra fresh, full of flavour and texture.

The felafels were freshly fried so a burnished dark brown crisp-crunchy on the outside and moist and hot on the inside. Beautifully & harmoniously flavoured and an interesting change from the usual recipe. I so love felafels when fresh. Salad with a mix of perfectly fresh tender glossy leaves, olives and pickled cucumber - delicious. Hommus smooth and nutty - went beautifully with the pliable pita bread and dabbing my felafel-salad-pita concoction in it. Tea with a bit of sugar - had that elusive well brewed mellow flavour (elusive for me at least). Birds nest pastries were intensely sweet and perfumed , with a clean finish that made them not at all cloying. Coffee came with a little square of Turkish delight too.

As I said - a keeper ! If only this was closer to home for us :-)

Great customer service, the owners always friendly with a smile on his face, food was tip top, highly recommended, great family environment too

An authentic Turkish breakfast experience. We ordered the Turkish breakfast & Menemen, both were just yum and the portions were perfect. We also ordered Turkish tea, which went down a treat. The cafe itself is a small space, however they have a big seating area outside, just wish there was some sort of heating provided for cold winter days. We will definitely be back!

Dropped in for lunch with some workmates and had a sit down meal. For starters, the place is extremely clean. Great menu to select from with plenty of variety. The joys breakfast really hit the spot. Fantastic service and very reasonably priced. Couldn't fault anything. Will return.

I ordered fried eggs with sucuk and it was pretty delicious but the eggs were a bit undercooked for my taste. The tea is great and would totally recommend it. The staff was also friendly.

Nice menu and food with generous servings- especially love the scones. Service is quick but don’t expect too much of a smile and I wouldn’t recommend a coffee
Great Turkish breakfast, and good value for money. We got the big breakfast and shared it between two. The people who run it are lovely too! Order a Turkish coffee and sit outside.

Food was greasy and tasteless. Service was slow and unprofessional. Waited an hour for coffee until finally told my order had been lost. With so many better options nearby I would not recommend this cafe to anyone.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad experience with Turkish food!!! Honestly such big servings for a good price
Got the shakshuka which has so much flavour!!! And it had quite a few eggs in there with the spices and cheese combined it was amazing

The big breakfast with the gozleme looked so big and nice! I’ll be getting that next time

Would definately recommend

Great family business. Used to go here when the previous owners were managing, but the new owners are amazing. Great customer service, very friendly vibes. Some many more options have been added to the menu and they customised my order very flexibly and happily. Will definitely be going back! Would recommend

UPDATE AT TOP. MY ORIGINAL POSTING AT BOTTOM AND UPDATED DUE TO NEW OWNERS:
SINCE THIS PLACE HAS RECENTLY CHANGED HANDS ITS REALLY GONE DOWNHILL. $26 NOW FOR A BIG BREAKFAST THAT IS NOTHING SPECIAL, IT USED TO BE $14! THEY FORGOT OUR EGGS ON THE BEEAKFAST AND I WENT BACK IN TO ORDER A COFFEE AFTER BREAKFAST AND WOULDNT ACCEPT CARD BECAUSE THERE WAS A $10 MINIMUM AND I HAD NO CASH AND I HAD JUST SPENT $26! NOT TO MENTION THE GIRL WORKING HAS A SERIOUS ATTITUDE PROBLEM.
I HAVE GIVEN THE NEW OWNERS TWO CHANCES AND BOTH TIMES HAVE BEEN A FAIL. WE USED TO COME HERE FROM ST KILDA AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH A BRING FRIENDS ETC....NO MORE.
THEY NEED TO LEARN HOW TO TREAT CUSTOMERS AND NOT OVERPRICE THE FOOD!

OLD REVIEW FOR THE OLD OWNWRS - Feck I love this place. Fresh home style cooked middle eastern breakfast!! Generous serves and really top. Friendly family. The menemen is super delicious (best I've had) and the big breakfast has a good bit of everything!

Great little cafe in the heart of Coburg, wonderful service and food is delicious.
Been there a number of times & still can't get enough! Must try the Spinach & Cheese Gozleme. Keep up the great work guys!

Day - Thursday
Time - Lunch
Food - 3/5
Service - 4/5
Ambience - 2/5
Value for Money - 3/5

Other Comments - This is a local hangout for the Turkish community, I think everyone knows each other! I had the lamb served with rice, yoghurt & salad. Yummy rice, I asked the owner how it was cooked and let's just say...fried in lotsa fat, very tasty but no good for anyone on a diet! I also tried the Turkish tea with a little sugar, it was lovely...would definately return!

Food was delicious and well worth the wait! Highly recommend the 'Big Breakfast' with the Mince Meat (Kiymali) Gozleme. Friendly staff and cosy atmosphere. Don't forget to order a Turkish tea (çay) as it goes down very nicely with your food.
The North Remembers!
Fantastic little shop that brings together the Anatolian breakfast with a modern touch. In a trendy part of Coburg, where you can sit down and listen to street performers if you are lucky. Friendly staff, who always try to please the customer. Love the big breakfast!!!

Great spot for a reliable and cheap sit down breakfast if you live nearby. Some items are a little on the bland side, but for the price and homely service you can't be disappointed.

Food never disappoints. I've been here on several occasions and the food is memorable every time. Servings are very generous and extremely tasty. My favourite is the rice pilav with chickpeas and salad. The coffee is excellent too. Very authentic Turkish cuisine. A real gem.

Great local. On my wish list for ages, finally made it to Chorba Cafe on a Sunday around lunchtime. It was pumping. There was a little bit of a wait for the food, but well worth it. My lamb wrap was divine and my companion's borek was cheesy and delicious. I love how it is a family affair with wholesome traditional dishes and you can see right into the kitchen and watch the action. Clearly a favourite with the locals, and it's little wonder why. There's so many cool cafes with slick fit outs but frankly, I can make smashed avocado on toast at home. When I go out I want to try something different and when it's wholesome food like at Chorba's it's going to be somewhere that I'll want to visit time and time again. Thanks for a great meal.

New school meets Old school. A definite gem in the Victoria street courtyard of Coburg, just off Bell and Sydney Rd. Old fashion feel good food served by a family who makes you feel welcome, in a modern fit out that you would not expect in the location.

Halay (the young man, I hope I spelt that right) is down to earth, and well versed in the dishes.

It's a a regular for me to sit in the afternoon, or if I'm looking for a quick take away.

The coffee is excellent also, as are the biscuits and cakes.

Pricing is perfect and dishes are on the large side, so they present very good value.

11/10

Moorish!!!. Great food! Love the Menemen with a serving of rice.
Relaxed vibe and great prices, what more can you ask for?!

Love it. I'm a local and am happy to add this to the list of coburg favourites.

the staff are nice, and the food is fresh and good value. having been turned on to turkish breakfasts by a recent visit to sehzade up sydney rd, i recommend the menu here. the soup is great, the gözleme fresh, the coffee good, the ambience out in the mall set by groups of old greek and italian men chatting amiably away. it's also a nice spot to read.

highly recommended.

Great food and service.. Even though this place was buzzing the service and food was wholesome fresh and delicious. A reasonably priced little cafe offering a variety of Turkish food. Very clean with a great atmosphere. I would highly recommend the big toast breakfast.

Amazing! Love the service and food is second to none. The Gozleme is the best I've tasted, unfortunately I keep forgetting to buy extra to take to work :(

Surprise packet. Went there based on reviews and the place was brilliant. started with the breakfast offerings which were fresh, delicious and had flavour combo that was spot on. based on how happy we were with the initial plates we went through their boreks which were equally good, generously filled and had an amazingly moreish soft pastry that i will be back there for very soon!

Hearty breakfasts, wholesome meals. The small kitchen here is always busy so the service can be a little quirky, but is always pleasant. I have been three times and can recommend the food. Smallish menu but good example of traditional Turkish food; some dishes add a modern twist. Hearty breakfasts are the Breakfast on Toast, Menemen or Big Breakfast. Have also tried the Braised Lamb on rice ($11!!) and Chickpea meal is next on the list. Good, honest food. Coffee quite reasonable as well.

Delicious food obviously made with a lot of care and attention. The cafe is warm and inviting and super clean. What really makes this place are the lovely people who run it. One of my favourite places in Coburg.

One of my fav places in coburg, I go there prob twice a week now... best coffee and the lamb & rice is to die for.. a bit hesitant to write a good review as don't want it to get too busy, is a teeny tiny place ;-)

Delicious!!!. Cosy little cafe, with delicious Turkish food. It's quite rare to find a place that makes exceptional Turkish food like this cafe. It has friendly staff and is very hygienic, with the food preparation area in full view to customers. Highly recommended a must try. Will be back for sure!

High recommend. Went to Chorba Cafe last Sunday for brunch with friends for the first time. We didn't know what to expect, but the food was delicious, the service was friendly and the atmosphere was great. I'll definitely be going back regularly!

If you're up for it, try the big breakfast - it's a combination of the best of Turkish morning food! The lentil soup was probably the best i've ever had!
Adriana
Yummo!. Delicious food and friendly staff. Great environment. I'll definately be back!

I don't usually write reviews but had to for this place. So I was a bit wary about venturing outside my usual breakfast routines in Richmond but I was on the hunt for some nice Turkish food and this little cafe really did please. I was really surprised with the exceptional quality of the food at such an affordable price. The first time I went I had the chicken and mushroom borrek which was so good that I bought a second one take away for my wife to try. The second time I brought my wife along and we both had the Big Breakfast which had gozleem, salad, halloumi cheese, sautéed mushrooms, and cute little plates with olives, feta cheese, jam and cream - a king's feast. We were still in the area by lunch time and although we were so full, we still came back to try their rice pudding (unbelievable) and Turkish coffee, and also bought minced meat and vegetarian borrek takeaway for dinner that night.

Weekend Breakfast Hotspot. Since we've discovered this little gem we've become a regular visitor almost every weekend. It's cute, cosy ,clean, local, friendly staff and has tasty pastries.

The Gozleme Kings !. I had went back for thirds ! the gozleme was amazing !!!!
JAN
Yayla Corbasi is my favourite and it is just fantastic . It is a warm restorative soup thickened with rice and a beaten egg. Long winters are best endured with the help of yogurt soup and it is flavored with aromatic herbs found in the mountains, and endless servings of tea Chorba provides.I also like green salad they serve with gozleme made from exotic plants with astringent flavors..Definitely recommend if you are around!!!

Nice atmosphere. I had the gozleme. Cute cafe, great food, will definitely go there again

Awesome, home cooked Turkish food!! I've been there nearly every weekend for breakfast or lunch since it has opened. My favorites are their assorted gozleme and boreks, amazing soups and burgers/rolls. I've tried nearly everything on their menu it's all delicious. You also must try their braised lamb! Really warm atmosphere as well. Highly recommend
