Review Minanoie - Collingwood

Great service and spacious hip cafe. The food here has a seemingly health conscious focus with Japanese flavoured influence. I was blown away by the food, it was nothing that I had expected - but really tasty and different from anything I’ve had before.

I enjoyed breakfast here. Strong Japanese influence on standard “Gai Jin” breakfast favourites. I loved the miso/eggplant baked eggs though a little heavy on the cheese. Coffee was good however serving sizes of the coffee was a little too ‘dainty’ given it was a Sunday morning and the level of my hangover/desire for caffeine. Outside is very unassuming so very easy to miss. Look for the plants for sale up the back.

What’s a cute little hidden gem! Small menu but was yum! I had the miso baked eggs, don’t usually like eggplant but was so yum and cheesy!!! Big fan! Bf had scrambled with sausage, he said it was good (better than average) apparently the chocolate cake is Yum and all their other cakes looked amazing! Had almond mocha and it was so yummy! Also had takeaway the day before. Ambiance is so tranquil, plants which are for sale and just an amazing atmosphere, we stayed way past finishing our meal and was not once pushed out like your usual Melbourne hustle. 👌🏼

Great coffee and food. I haven't tried everything but they did a wonder job with food. The traditional brekkie has got a slight hint of Japanese flavour which was delightful. Staff were friendly. The interior may not be to everyone's liking. It's quirky and you can feel the budget was perhaps a constraint.

We enjoyed the plant and old workshop ambience here. The rice porridge was my idea of a perfect breakfast. I'd come back just for this dish alone. Well worth a visit

Wow. Blown away by this gorgeous and inspiring place! Wish I lived closer and would come here daily. Also wished they had WiFi. Super friendly staff. Great coffee and they kept my water filled for the 3 hours I was there.

Unique atmosphere with plant and wood. Good coffee as well :)

Great place with large tables. Serving good range of food from cafe to lunch. Surrounded by plants and high quality ceramic shop this is amazing place.

A lovely and spacious cafe with lots of greenery! And a blue car. The cafe actually shares its space with the Plant Society, hence why there are all kinds of plants here. Anyway, there’s a relaxing and airy feel to this place. Service is pretty good and staff are friendly. The food could be better though. The avocado toast was very basic and the toast was hard. The red peppercorns were a strange mix to the plate, so we just removed them all... we also ordered the “lunch bowl” which consisted of slow cooked chicken, green olives, daikon salad and grains. Though it was warm, it was bland and became boring after a few spoon fulls. Overall, the menu does offer healthy options, but I’m not sure if they all lack balance in flavours? I’m just basing this on the two dishes that we had... Our cappuccino and latte on the other hand were delicious and smooth.

Beautiful, unpretentious brunch locale in Collingwood. The interiors are absolutely breathtaking. It doesn't pretend to be like the modern-clean cut-botanical cafes that are swarming up the brunch scene - it just is naturally aesthetic. Ordered the seasonal lunch menu which made me feel very healthy indeed. Also tried the miso baked egg which was great.

The service was quite poor, we were not acknowledged when we entered so we didn’t know whether to wait or seat ourselves. We ended up seating ourselves and could obviously see one particular staff avoiding serving us. We had to flag down a different staff just to get menus.<br/><br/>I had the Miso Baked Egg and while I enjoyed the miso flavour the cheese overwhelmed the dish overall.

The Tea is one star as Mina-no-ie does not allow refill of hot water for barley tea, which is the essence of drinking teas. The food was pretty good!

This place is the loveliest. The food is incredible. The miso-baked eggs is a must try (weekends only). So ambiant & also quiet. Everything is quality. Cant wait to try more

A sweet cafe with friendly staff. Before going and seeing the photos online, I was a little worried about their portion sizes being tiny but after having the soba with onsen egg & kake-tsuyu I was surprised how filling it was! Not only tasty, but felt clean and healthy. Giving 4 out of 5 only because I felt the price was a tad dear. Other than that I'm looking forward to going back and tasting the other items on their menu!

Love the place, love the staff (especially the barista guy who served us and had his first Lune croissant. Hola if you remember us!), ambience is great with cute spots to take photos. Food was amazing as well. Had the baked eggs and the the chicken and fish sets and I think I need to go back for more!

Cute cafe with a flower shop inside. We came here for a quite coffee and iced tea. Looking at other people’s food I want to come back! Everything was japanese inspired.

A lovely place full of greens as its interior aesthetics, personally am drawn by this place's vibes - soothing music, chilled service x Will pop by again to try their food x

I'm in two.minds about this place. Their small kitchen means they dont do extras or add ons to meals (i assume this is why they dont do it) but this left me feeling hungry after my breakfast because the avocado and toast was only one slice on bread and a whole lot of avocado, whereas with an egg it would have been enough. They also only make one sized coffee which I consider blasphemy, so I ate my breakfast then went up the road for a large take away instead.

Amazingly impressed by this little oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle. Fresh, green, breezy, light, spacious, unpretentious.. these are some of the words I’d describe this place and as for the food? Well.. soo yummy soo healthy soo perfect. This is the Fish Lunch Complete and I’m leaving pretty satisfied. Give it a try! Def highly recommended 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Beautiful Japanese soul food with a healthy focus. Until you get to their delicious cakes and brownies. Good hot chocolate too. Also try their matcha butter cake with red bean filling.

Sinfully Delicious!<br/><br/>Ambience: delightful. Lush greenery everywhere, cute little car parked in the middle of the cafe with benches organised around it. Absolutely love the high ceilings, airy feel to it. Heaps of space all around<br/>Service: attentive, polite, accommodating, big smiles on everyones faces, truly Japanese-inspired with a focus the customer experience. Kudos team!<br/>Food: amazing. I am a fan of Japanese food and brunch. Nothing better than Japrunch (or Brunchese? I don't think I quite coined a term here). The baked egg was delightful (baked egg, home made sweet miso, roasted eggplant, butternut pumpkin, provolone cheese wth a side of toast - to die for. Not for those on a diet, but definitely for one who wants to indulge for the day.<br/>Will be back again for more

Food was decent but nothing special. My favourite dish was the eggplant topped with some crumbed tofu. The beef wrapped asparagus was also nice but I was expecting something more.

Visited twice for a work lunch. Had the banquet both times and really enjoyed the different mix of salads, salmon and tofu or pork. The ginger tea is just delicious and refreshing. Really recommend this if you want good food and a tranquil location amongst the vast array of eateries in the Fitzroy/Collingwood area.

Went here for a work lunch for 10 people. We had a feed me type set up. Not entirely sure what all the dishes were but the food was fresh, healthy and yummy! Left feeling comfortably satisfied!

A unique dining experience that allows you to check out Japanese breakfast options in the heart of Collingwood. I enjoyed the atmosphere and service, and would recommend this if avo on toast isn't quite cutting it for you anymore.

A local spot and one of my favourites. Love the home-style Japanese influence on the menu and the calming setting. Their signature breakfast and lunch plates are awesome - quite wholesome and different from the typical (becoming boring) Melbourne cafe standard. <br/><br/>I have to strongly disagree with the comments claiming small portion size - I'm a big eater and always leave satisfied! Maybe some disgruntled bacon eaters amongst the critics. The service is always great too and there is a good assortment of drinks etc.

Posting as a review because once again my spoonbacks are acting up. See blog for full write up. <br/><br/>I was feeling a little under the weather so the House made lemon ginger tea seemed like an obvious choice. It was everything I wanted: sweet, comforting, warming and full of good things.<br/><br/>Soba with onsen egg and kake tsuyu was my dining companions. The tsuyu was strongly flavoured. When accompanied with the buckwheat noodles, it was a real umami hit. The onsen egg also managed to make me wonderfully nostalgic for my student days in japan, and the onsen eggs that I would crack atop of almost everything.<br/><br/>The Monthly lunch plate lets you pick a chicken, red meat or vegetable main to have alongside two side dishes and rice. I reasoned that more vegetables would help me fight off my cold, so I went with the vegetable option which was a grilled eggplant. Although the eggplant was soft and delicious the real highlight was the nutty sesame dressing on the broccoli. There were actually candied nuts which added a crunch and sweetness to the side dish that I never would have thought could work! Perhaps the dish would be better completed with a meat option or I was just feeling envy over the egg but I felt that this could have done with a little bit more, something, to complete it.<br/><br/>After a morning of gorging ourselves on pastries, this light lunch was just what we needed. The servings aren’t very large, but it felt good to walk away from a restaurant satiated rather than completely stuffed for once. Mina no ie may not be anyone’s home, but it certainly is a homely place to visit.

YES:<br/>Baked eggs with sweet miso, roasted eggplant, butternut, provolone cheese and toast on the side. (Ask for more bread, there's never enough.)<br/><br/>Iced yuzu lemonade <br/><br/>SERVICE:<br/>Can be a little slow and bothering at times

"Mina lunch" (set lunch)<br/><br/>When you order a $17 chicken set lunch and the chicken pieces (all two of them) are about the size of your thumb (collectively), you have a problem. No amount of "organic, health food" goodness can offset the dissatisfaction of walking away with your stomach and wallet feeling empty. <br/><br/>

I would have stayed away this place by looking at the photos and menu but sadly it's a friends catch up I can't say no which leads to this tragedy. <br/>As soon as I arrived Mina at 12:30 is not even half full, waiters had rushed us for a few times in couple of mins, eyes rolled and makes you feel a bit uncomfy.<br/>The space is airy and open but the concrete around it makes it look a bit cold and I won't call this EI 家 which should be meaning home in English.<br/>I would not want to comment the food because they look depressing and watching my friend eating that $2x "lunch set" have make me wonder if this cafe is here for their passion or $$$. <br/>Matcha cake is really dry, they must have left for days. <br/>The ginger syrup is the only thing I can appreciate in the whole experience. <br/><br/>I hope this have changed over the past two months as you would be too embarrassed to call yourself a Japanese cafe with that quality of service and food.<br/><br/>

Nice space - large building with a fairly minimalist design. Really efficient staff, we were seated immediately and assisted at just the right times. <br/>Food was great, quite a unique menu with some excellent options. Baked eggs and soba noodles were tasty. There were many other options on the menu that I can't wait to try. Will be back soon

Beautiful cafe with a heavy Japanese influence just across from Aka Siro serving delightful food and lovely cakes.<br/>One of my favourite places to while away time in the Collingwood area especially after a heavy meal at Aka Siro.<br/>The food here is really good as well, but more often than not I'm here for the matcha cake and coffees.<br/>The soba noodles is a good pick.

An artisan cafe serving Japanese fusion breakfast and lunch. Whilst a little on the pricier end, my fish lunch achieved Japanese precision between light and wholesome and is excitingly different from the usual lunch venues. The Hojicha tea was aromatic and soothing. This place is exactly what I'm looking for on the day of after a run of 7 night shifts.

Mina-no-ie is a lovely warehouse cafe tucked away on a side street of Collingwood. With a beautiful open plan kitchen and utilising domestic style japanese cookware and utensils (which they also sell instore along with a great selection of artisanal Japanese goods), this cafe really lives up to its name of "everyone's home". There is a very cosy and laidback ambience and the staff and menu similarly reflects this. The coffee is nice and served in beautiful handcrafted ceramics. If you are after a very heavy, bacon and eggs type of breakfast, this place is not for you. Mina's menu is japanese influenced and is also light and delicate in flavours, with a seasonal touch in the choice of ingredients. We usually order the Japanese style of scrambled eggs and the plate of grilled salmon which is accompanied by side salads and grains. You won't leave this place feeling full to the brim, but with a healthy satisfied stomach and an appreciation of the relaxed charm of the Japanese way of life.
Chubbylover86
Funky looking warehouse cafe with a relaxed feel. It has a simple menu with a Japanese twist. I had the ooki breakfast which whilst tasty and healthy, is hard to justify spending $18.50 for a plate that comprised a 1/4 of rocket. The latte was nice but not very strong despite the extra shot. Overall I like the food but the menu is a tad over priced.
Ed
This is a nice place, a nice warehouse converted Cafe, shame the food is not quite satisfying, tiny dishes and way way over priced for what they are.

Good place to come for a healthy option and something a little different. Housed in a large warehouse, it is tastefully outfitted with some beautiful crockery. Coffee is generally good. Food is strongly Japanese influenced, and the mixed lunch plates are always tasty if not overly filling. Not somewhere I'd eat every day, but certainly not a bad choice for some variation.

Mina·no·ie, located on a narrow offshoot street in Collingwood, offers fresh, Japanese dishes for those seeking a flavourful escape. Set in a wonderfully large, airy warehouse – the owners pay homage to architecture that creates clean lines and minimalistic chic. Here you can also shop for artfully crafted homewares such as bags, porcelain, stationary and glass.

I really wanted to like this place. The man who served me was lovely. Such a big space and so cold. Shame the gas heaters weren't working but I did have a blanket to keep me warm. Coffee I found very weak but loved the cup it was served in. The sweet miso baked eggs were a let down for me. I had read about in but found it way too sweet and only had 1 egg. It was COVERED in cheese which seem to overpower everything else. So many amazing cafes in this area and this is not one of them sadly :(

very good food and very unexpected! my job requires me to travel around which brought me to this awesome little Japanese cafe. quick and friendly staff

I'm new to this place. But so far really like it. <br/>About coffee, I always been searching for the good soy milk coffee I have to admit that I found it. This place has a really tasty soy-milk coffee and surprisingly good modern Japanese brunch. Miso is a star of the dishes. <br/>I definitely come back to try many items in the menu.

Down to earth environment, great spot for reading/writing/meeting with collegues (as they have nice long tables here). Food is nice & healthy, coffee is alright and I love the japanese ceramics.

An oasis. Love this place!<br/>Great, clean food in an amazing space, and lovely, friendly staff.<br/>Always feels so calm in here, it's an oasis on Peel St

Beautiful space and food. Love it!. Mina-no-ie offer gorgeous food and a beautiful environment. One of my favourite cafe's in Melbourne. Doesn't obsess over coffee–just healthy and delicious japanese influenced food. Go check it out!

I love this place, no hustle and bustle, calm and relaxed atmosphere. Simple clean food that is consistently good. Never had a problem with the wait staff, always friendly and polite.

Delightful. Solace and quiet are hard to find in Collingwood; proud Mary may be many people's number one, but unless you're the kind that enjoys the noise living next to train tracks, the place is deafening. My search for a coffee and a place to think continues...<br/><br/>Enter Mina-no-ie.<br/><br/>A cavernous, minimally furnished space with only a few green plants providing color amidst the white brick walls and wooden tables. books on design and art line the back wall for the artistically inclined.<br/><br/>The menu offers a terrifically healthy, fresh and lively selection of Japanese inspired salads - a guilty indulgence this place ain't. The coffee is hot, strong and served with warmth and attentiveness - and the best part? You can even hear your own thoughts. Or enjoy having none at all while your enjoy this very relaxing, tasteful space.<br/><br/>Highly recommended.

The coffee is good and the restaurant is very funky - loved going there in my lunch break however today the service was so bad I'm not sure I want to go back. So many cafés in Collingwood customer service is all part of the competition. #noneedtoberude:(

Disgusting Service. Myself and 4 other people were seated and water was poured by a seemingly smiley and polite male waiter (at lunch time on Wednesday 12th Feb 2014) - good start.<br/><br/>"The coffee is great here" is the first thing he says. Okay great we think!<br/><br/>"Because you have a coffee cup from another place. Next time leave it out the front. It's really rude." he says to me. We all got up and left. To clarify, it was only me that had a takeaway coffee cup I had bought while waiting for my friends.<br/><br/>The food might've been great, but the taste of unprofessionalism, rudeness and pretentiousness was all we could stomach. Never been so appalled at waiter behaviour. Management, I hope you sort your staff out.

Refreshing. I love this place - it's calm, thoughtful and spacious, a far cry from the usual busy brunch spots around Melbourne. The menu changes monthly for lunch, and there is a miso soup option with onigiri, as well as a range of drinks (lemon and ginger tea recommended!). Food is wholesome, fresh, delicious home-cooking -come here with a book to chill for a few hours, or get stuck into a conversation with a friend - I guarantee you'll walk out feeling refreshed!

Intriguing Concept that doesn't entirely deliver.. Mina-no-ie is a bit hit and miss. The space itself appears nice enough with a great minimalist zen style that is totally stripped back which is meant to somewhat accompany the japanese inspired brunch. What results though is an atmosphere that lacks any real warmth and as such the vibe in there feels really cold and pretentious rather then warm and inviting. The service did not help either with the waiter almost purposely trying to speak as little as possible in addition to a lack of eye contact when serving. The coffee i did like, served in a very unique cup which i enjoyed drinking out of, the coffee was real velvety smooth with lovely chocolate undertones. The food i have to say for japanese which is one of my favourites also disappointed. Overall it was quite flavourless and the pricing for what you received was pretty disappointing. Overall an interesting enough concept that in my eyes does not deliver, with so much competition in an around i would give this a miss for the food but a thumbs up for a take away coffee away from the pretencious atmosphere, maybe buy one of those cups swell so you can enjoy the coffee at a nearby park or something.<br/><br/>Food :2.5/5<br/>Coffee:3.7/5<br/>Service:3/5<br/>Design/Ambiance: 3/5<br/>Value: 2.7/5<br/>Total: 59.6% D+

There was gluten free menu so it was really good for my partner. It was really clean food we both enjoyed! However it was sad that there was not many gluten freer desert..... Hope they make more of it! And I would l

Love the space. Healthy food, comfortable space. I love the atmosphere. The staff is so lovely, and they do awesome coffee. My new favourite spot!

Looks like an uber trendy from the outside and seems to be run by "Japanese trendies" But the combination Japanese/western menu is cool. Not the best Coffee or food but I enjoyed it!

I come here for lunch at least once a week because it makes me feel warm and happy. The cafe hasnt received as many positive reviews/ratings as it should but it definitely gets better and better every month. The atmosphere of the cafe is homely, relaxed and it all shows through each plate of food which is wholesome and prepared with love.<br/><br/>The menu changes monthly though some things stay the same. Lunch is always a choice of meat, fish or vegetables with 2 salads and rice with grains or you can get the complete lunch with either meat or fish+vegetable+2 salads and rice and grain. It sounds like a lot but its enough to fill you up and keep you feeling energized throughout the day. There is also a winter veg soup with onigiri balls or you can order breakfasts.<br/><br/>everyone should try it for lunch, its amazing and will make you feel great!

Came to Minanoie for breakfast by as I liked the look of the space and thought it would be one of those hidden gems. Coffee was okay but Luke warm, food was okay but the menu was very limited. Service was below average, we were offered coffee on arrival but found it hard to get anyone's attention when we wanted another.

Contemporary Japanese Perfect. The baked egg with eggplant & miso is incredible. If the menu lacked depth before, it certainly doesn't now. And the slow service...as a person who lives life running, it's actually a forced break and if you plan for it to take 15 minutes instead of 6...life is better for it!
Hayley Jarvis
Great space but average for all else. Food was just 'okay'. <br/><br/>Really cool space, but could have been so much better. Service was slow <br/><br/>Potential is there, but I don't think I will be back
EatBeast
Not bad. Very small menu compared with Cibi. I still like Cibi better, better shopping & nicer food. The sweet miso baked eggs was way too sweet. Coffee was just ok. Other food just ordinary<br/>More a place to be seen rather than for brekky

I don’t usually go for cavernous warehouse spaces, but this one manages to retain some intimacy somehow. It also has great natural light. Add sun streaming through the windows to practically any place and you’re more than half way there for me.

With such a cute name (Everyone’s home) that promotes good home style food that relies on organic local produce, we were definitely intrigued. Having already frequented Peel St. often enough (back in my Tokyo Bike obsessed days…not that long ago) and being a fan of Cibi, Andrea and I set out to Collingwood.

I wish I read Epicure more often but I could only read it usually if I can fit in a lunch break.  Fortunately last Tuesday I had a chance to sneak in some time to read the Epicure, and discovered this new Japanese breakfast place named Mina-No-Ie, which is opened by the team behind Cibi. I immediately place an urgent SMS to Dr. Ben, and set a date to visit Mina-No-Ie on the Sunday.  We got there at about 11:15am, in a spacious warehouse on Peel St and it’s already full.  Well, I did mention spacious, but they shared their space with a gift shop and in my opinion the gift shop was taking up too much space We didn’t wait for long before we got seated.  They got our drinks order pretty quickly and left us with the menu.  There are not much on offer to be honest and we were slightly disappointed.  There are 3 “simple” breakfast items like granola and toast, 1 whol

The layout is great, coffee good, and this Miso soup (a cross between traditional Miso and a sweet minestrone) is amazing. M found it a tad on the sweet side, but I loved it. AND I don't usually do soup!!

Mina-no-ei, Japanese for “everyone’s home” is a funky cafe / restaurant in a big warehouse building in a Collingwood side street. It’s a lovely industrial loft style feel with a homely, simple menu serving breakfast and lunch. The menu changes quite often but there are usually at least a few gluten free options available.
