Review Eat A Scroll - Collingwood

Jeffrie Trika
Kudos to in-house bakery ..... Always commend those who made stuff in-house for us to enjoy. I do enjoy your scrolls, got a lot of potential, I also like my Cinnabon in the US, must sharpen up those scrolls for the price that you are asking us to pay. Thank you, it was an enjoyable Sunday afternoon delights.

I came into popup scroll last month, the scrolls are absolutely scrumptious, esp the delightful cream cheese scroll, this place is great for a 'pop in' coconut coffee with your scroll as well! I will be telling my friend and family. Hannah Collingwood.

Cool but cheerful atmosphere and awesome scrolls. Pretty sweet but awesome all the same. Yum.

Very yummy scrolls, pastries and really good coffee.
The presentation is amazing. Went there about a month ago . Someone mentioned they are selling via the back lane now.

So many pretty things to choose from! I think I've pretty much tried most of the cruffins and scrolls with my fellow scroll enthusiast friend. My favourites are definitely the ferero rocher scroll and the passionfruit meringue cruffin. Overall, most of the flavours are a little too sweet and the texture can be pretty soggy, but definitely a good place to go for a sugar kick.

Coffee - Good
Service - Great
Food - Good

Overall, this place is super cute. Met my sister for breaky early one morning and stumbled into Eat a Scroll. Was wayyy too early for a sweet scroll and the only other option was a plain croissant as they were out of tomato haha
It was fresh and the coffee was nice too.

Would only go back to satisfy a 3pm sweet craving as the scrolls do look fun.

Just great. I get here to see a sign saying the building is for lease.

This tiny cafe has the best hot chocolate in Melbourne. And if you read my reviews, you will see that I'm on a daily search for my favourite.

You also have chocolate babka. Where else can I buy babka as delicious as yours?

And a cosy, quiet outdoor courtyard upstairs.

This is awful. I demand an answer. Are you closing or relocating? If relocating, please do so to the south side (South Yarra).

I'm devastated if you're closing.

*EDIT: to be replaced by a Nepalese vegetarian restaurant. Considering selling scrolls through laneway window. They use Mork hot chocolate powder.

We bought takeaway from here. 2 scrolls, a blueberry lemon custard one and a Nutella one. We bought it around lunchtime and had it a little after tea and it was still beautifully crisp, buttery and layered! The blueberry and lemon custard was just the right balance of beautiful berrylicious and velvety tart. The Nutella one was... well, what can I say... it was perfect!

Looking for a crossiant I had heard about this place so I was keen to try this place.

And I'm really glad i did. I had a plain crossiant which was light and fluffy, full of butter and it tasted good so I knew it was bad haha

Yummmm this was good. Def worth a visit!

My oh my, Eat A Scroll - heavenly! Just the cutest space in Collingwood- light filled, airy with bright fun prints on the wall.
Scrolls all look amazing, it was hard to choose one I opted for the Nutella and caramel and it was delicious so soft with a healthy serve of Nutella - coffee was good also but scalding hot hence the 4.5 but otherwise a wonderful place run by a all female team who were very sweet
Donutsam
I’m mostly a big fan of the scrolls over at Eat a Scroll, only up the road a little from the donutsam residence. To put it lightly, they’re a massive step up from the bricks that popped up at Oregano which I cannot fathom why anyone would want to consume. Too heavy, too much regret. Here, from the mean streets of Collingwood, it’s a fluffy, cloud-like affair at $4.50 with the scrolls being delicate and topped with such much lighter fluids like custard and cream cheese icing. Not overly sweet, not dense, a good variety of flavours. Eat a Scroll also offers an unexpected range of non-scroll options, but I haven’t tried any of these yet. In fact, I only came here for the scrolls. And they’re good. So go.

If Marie Antoinette were alive today she would never have uttered her famous phrase....instead she would probably be found in Collingwood espousing the digestive merits of scrolls!

And at the (supplanted) sage urgings of this time honoured phrase we ate some scrolls and how good they were.

We were dissuaded from any thoughts of an uprising by an assorted selection of six of the best:

Blueberry
Coffee
Nutella
Traditional
Raspberry and rose
Salted caramel

All exquisite. So much so that the ensuing fight over who got what lead to spoons at dawn! I lost out on the salted caramel which was reputed to have been f-ing good!

But I more than made up for it with sole custody of the coffee and Nutella.

The remainder of the spoils divided equally.

So take heed of the instructions, get to Collingwood and do as the sign says!
Sybarite
SO GOOD. Impossible to choose so opted for the tasting pack. If I had to choose a favourite it would be the salted caramel swiftly followed by the raspberry/rose and the berries and cream (I think?), bit that would be because I don't like chocolate or nuts! Would definitely return for more abs to try the cruffins.
Irene Khoo
I've tried the raspberry, nutella and the ferrero rocher scrolls and still want more. They're fresh and soft and delicious. They hit the spot any time of the day.

Cute branding sucked me in. Nice selection of scrolls. I had the raspberry and rose which was okay but too sweet for my liking. The recipe is more cake like than the scroll craze in Sydney.
Expensive Delicious Habit.
Everything from this shop is seriously good. I first visited when it was a pop-up, and was very happy when they converted to their permanent location. Most recently I tried the caramel cream cruffin- my first cruffin and a great one to start off with! The flavours are always fantastic and the texture is perfect. Coffees are good too, and everyone who works there is super friendly!

Julian is a scroll wizard!! I organised two scroll cakes (that serve 8 each) for my partners birthday!! You can't beat the original flavour in my books but the salted caramel was a crowd pleaser.. Not only were they mouth watering to look at but the joy we had in picking them to pieces made our night. We were like a pack of lions after a satisfying kill and we savoured every moment.. I cannot recommend Eat A Scroll more highly.. 100/10.. Thank you Julian, Tammy and the Eat a Scroll team.. We will be back time and time again 👍🏻

DO: Any of the scrolls. They're soft, pillowy, delicious and come in an assortment of flavours. Salted caramel and Nutella never ceases to amaze.

DON'T: Forget the larger pastries or the savouries: Julian and his wife make a mean sausage roll or pastie.

TIP: If you ever need something sweet after devouring a kebab from Biggie Smalls or a burger from Huxtaburger, this is the place. Open 7 days. Lamarzocco coffee machine ... Sweet.

I stopped by because I was in the area. I've never eaten a cruffin that I've liked (yes, I've tried Lune's cruffins too), so I could be biased. Flavours were good in the banana cream cruffin but I didn't like the density of the pastry. Felt a bit.. dry or stale. I have tried the scrolls a long time ago, should probably try another scroll in future.

I've been here few times now and tried variety of scrolls to eat in & takeaway. Coffee has good strong flavor with beautiful design if the barister isn't casual work looking asian girls. Customer service is always excellent.

Can definitely see why these perfect pastries were featured on Zomato's Best Bakeries of Melbourne collection. Was led toward the Matcha Green Tea scroll by one of the fantastic staff. Although not always my preferred pastry pairing, the green tea filling complimented the light, flaky cinnamon pastry perfectly. Dough was perfect balance of sweetness and managed to avoid the excessive sugar coating common with some scrolls.

Have I found heaven? Was given a 6 pack of "ooh so cute, yes it's too cute to eat" scrolls for teatime. Photo is self explanatory.Beautifully piped like cupcakes except now I can get these scrolls, comfortably and not creating any mess, into my mouth. You know how it is with cupcakes...open your mouth wide yet cream and scrapes will be all over your lips.
A must try.And good price for it too.

Eat A Scroll is a cute little cafe in Fitzroy, serving up soft and fun flavoured pastries. Tried the taster pack and my favourite was the cream cheese and cinnamon scroll. Texture was good and dough wasn't too thick. The Ferrero Rocher one was really rich and indulging, it was great. The black sesame was a unique one that I enjoyed too. Other flavours were fine but I wasn't a huge fan of them.

the croissants were a bit too crispy for me, they were more like 'crunchy', staffs were nice though.

cruffins were good.
The City Lane
Located in bustling Collingwood, Eat A Scroll was opened by husband and wife Julian and Tammy Chew, after the resounding success of their pop up. The bakery is renowned for its mouth-watering flavours of scrolls and cruffins, baked fresh twice daily in the kitchen downstairs.

I visited Eat a Scroll on a Sunday afternoon with my partner. I was in the mood for something sweet and I probably got the sweetest scroll on the menu being the Nutella and Caramel scroll. We split the scroll and also ordered a latte and a hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was quite bitter which did work well with the scroll but would be too much on its own. The decor was pretty cool. Overall not a bad spot for a sweet on a Sunday.

Great scrolls - highly recommend the "tasting box" of 6 mini scrolls for $10! Moist, delicious and freshly baked. Will definitely be back for more.

I'm not sure about this place. We had pie and babka. The pie was good, pastry was good but the filling was so so. Babka was on the dry end. There wasn't much to choose from when we visited, if I'm in the area I might give it another go.
Taking A Bite
Eat Scroll Bakehouse on Smith St is the home of handmade scrolls in an assortment of different flavours. The ferrero rocher and lemon and blueberry scrolls are a hit! As well as the Nutella Cronut- oh yeah crispy croissant pastry dusted with sugar, with creamy Nutella inside- yum! Eat a scroll Bakehouse in Fitzroy is a unique spot to satisfy your scroll and Cronut cravings!

Ah…scrolls. They bring back fond childhood memories of the times where mum would pick up scrolls from Saint Cinnamon after work as a special treat for us. This warm, fluffy roll still holds a special place in my heart, and even though I don’t eat them as often as I used to, they remain one of my favourite sweets.

Pastry Chef Julian Chew has rocked our world with a delivery of these perfect, wonderful cinnamon scrolls! Forget doughnuts and muffins or danish – scrolls are the way forward, with flavours such as Original Cream cheese icing, salted caramel, pistachio and cherry, snickers, lemon and blueberry or Chocolate babka you will be hard pressed not to find one…. or two… ore three that you fall in love with!

Eat A Scroll came to cinnamon-scented life when Julian Chew (ex-owner of Ivanhoe's popular Lip Café and chef), discovered that his cafe was regularly selling out of their classic scrolls. Julian found himself baking dozens upon dozens of scrolls each morning to keep up with the demand of customers who had travelled across town to seek a dose of nostalgia (and buttery pastry). Combining forces with his creative wife Tammy, a retro-style, pop-up bakehouse was soon born on Collingwood's Smith Street.

Yummy scrolls and cruffins (if you buy four or more they are slightly discounted). The scolls all have a slight taste of cinnamon, which I had not been expecting. At midday on Sunday the shelf didn't have many (one or two of most flavours, but a couple were out)... hopefully they do make more throughout the day. Staff were friendly, and it was just a nice little place for some sweet baked goods.

These scroll are just yummilicious. While people are crazy over croissant , donut, cupcake, cronut, muffin and etc... scroll is certainly not to be missed. I had mine scrolls from this shop early this year and I was served by the friendly staff. When I asked if I could have them warm,he even offered me with fresh from oven scrolls right from the kitchen below. All I need to do it patiently wait for 5 minutes, which it was so worthwhile and i absolutely love their scrolls. Hopefully I will get a chance to go back soon.

Really tasty scrolls! We can really taste the passion that Julian places into each and every scroll. Tasted really good with some scroll ice cream as well.

Nice, simple, good 30min stop if you need a coffee of a scroll. Friendly service, not crowded. If you only need a coffee it is not the best place in town, but if you just need to cool down while reading a magazine, that is a nice little place perfect for a quick stop.
Thrice As Nice
Love the idea of a store dedicated to the humble scroll and cruffin. The coffee scroll was deliously soft with the right sweetness of coffee. Enjoyed the 2 coffee beans on top, as it added a nice crunch, would have loved more coffee beans adorning the scroll. The nutella and salted caramel was also delish. Enjoyed the mini versions also for the little ones.

These scrolls differ to that from Bakers Delight in the dough itself. These scroll doughs are soft and airy, which makes you feel like you can eat more. Comparison to Bakers Delight coffee scrolls these are better...smaller, soft and nice balance of coffee flavour then Bakers Delight. Personally the Bakers Delight coffee scrolls are tad bit too sweet for my liking as i prefer to taste the coffee and not the sugar.

I would have love to see more variety or have a changing variety special board to keep Customers curiosity reeling in weekly....simliar to Messina's special concept.

Overall these scrolls would make a nice gift idea for a birthday or gift of any sorts.
Their Croissant was very fresh and light, and the Almond Croissant was even better! We really enjoyed both of them. Service was very friendly.
Hungry Panda
Good trendy little bakery with good pastry.
We tried a mushroom parmesan quiche and a walnut apple scroll.

The flavours of the quiche was very nicely balanced but the pastry was too dry and crumbly (not in a good way).

The scroll was quite good, but not sure if this bakery really deserves such a high rating here...

Melbourne's answer to the cinnabon, these scrolls are well-flavoured and not too sweet. The scrolls themselves are light and good carriers for the delicious toppings. My favourite was the snickers. If you're feeling more like a pastry, the chocolate babkas are the way to go. To counteract the sygar overload, try a green tea. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, a chai milkshake!
Susan Burton
Love this place, it has great food and customer service! The cinnamon scrolls and Chai are my favorite! Will definitely recommend this place to my friends.

This place is awesome. Every time I walk past it I have to get something. The Nutella one is really delicious but my favourite is the snickers. Perfect with a cup of really good coffee

There is no doubt that I love cinnamon rolls. Since my favourite place in Chaddy shopping center closed down a few years ago, I had not yet found another favourite place. And then Eat A Scroll opened, of course I was very excited to try. It's a small shop and with not many seatings. I've been here for a few time, and every time I came quite late so they didn't have many flavours left. I wish they would open a bit later though. Last year I tried their ginger bread flavour and it was probably I most favourite one their. I think they don't have it anymore unfortunately. I didn't enjoy the shredded coconut flavour as much. I would say this is my go-to place for cinnamon rolls for now, but I will need to keep looking since it is still not comparable with the one in Chaddy before :(.

Came here because seeing the high rating but left feeling disappointed. Was hoping to see all the wonderful scrolls like i saw in pictures that reviewers left but seeing nothing but 6 options of scrolls only. (It was tuesday afternoon around 2 pm). Tried the blueberry something (i forgot the name of it exactly) and toffee apple but none of it left any impression at all. All of it taste dry. I was thinking was i come to the right place but the business card assured me that it was the right place. Sorry if i leave such a bad review but i had to tell the truth. All and all the service was friendly
AH
The blueberry and lemon scroll was definitely fresh, as it was very soft. However, while it definitely was not bad, it was not that memorable and was rather small for the price. I would come back to try something else if in the area, but I wouldn't make a trip to this side of town specifically for these scrolls.

Just a quick review because I had to say how wonderful this place is.

I walked in quite late today and tired after a long day and didn't realise until I got home and opened the box there was an extra scroll thrown in! Thank you so much to the staff.

I have been here a couple of times now and not only is the food delicious, fresh and imaginative, the bakery is warm, friendly and unpretentious and the staff are great, the coffee is excellent and so are the scrolls and cruffins!

Highly recommended

Gave this place a visit when it was a pop up scroll, tried a couple of their scrolls and all were absolutely delicious! The cruffin was just alright, still tasty though!

Love this place. Simple place simple scrolld but amazing taste. Highly recommended for sugar fix. Service always good. Apparently they moved couple of doors down will definitely visit to check it out

Melbourne is so obsessed with donuts right now, but I think I may have just found the next sweet thing this city will fall in love with – scrolls. You’ll find all the scrolls you could ever want at Eat a Scroll, and they really seem to be onto something here. The staff are very friendly, the store isn’t too much to look at but there’s heart here, a kind of shabby sheek that makes you feel at home. I seem to have got so distracted by the sweet delights at Eat a Scroll that I entirely neglected to tell you where it is. It’s suitably located in Fitzroy in the heart of infinitely cool Smith Street. The rumours are true, it is moving, but only a few doors up so there’s no need to worry! On weekends Eat a Scroll have a full range of sweet delights on offer. There’s so much choice it’s practically paralysing. All of the scrolls, the cruffins, boring old regular croissants and muffins, the pastry and the toppings and fillings to capture the imagination. We took the easy way out, electing a selection of the miniature scrolls, two cruffins and something else a little bit special only offered on weekends. Right so first things first – the scrolls come in a delightful array of flavours including snickers, Nutella, blueberry and lemon curd, salted caramel and apple. That’s just to name those we tried! Each of the scrolls were soft and fresh, with fillings that were utterly indulgent and generously served. The cruffins lived up to their name with the light and flaky pastry of a croissant with the size of a muffin and dusted liberally with sugar. The salted caramel was a definite highlight!

My absolute favourite place in Melbourne, the staff are amazing, the coffee is delicious and the SCROLLS!! My favourite is the cream cheese/walnut and cinnamon. But I would also recommend any cruffin they have because they will change your life! Would love them to bring back the savoury scroll though (hint hint) definitely can't recommend this place enough

Such a wide variety of delicious baked goods! The staff are super-friendly and very helpful if you're overwhelmed by choice as we were. The coffee is pretty good as well. Overall very impressed, will be back!!

Amazing little bakery with artisan baked goods! I had the Nutella cruffin and Mum the cream cheese scroll and both were amazing. Really cute little cafe, not too much variety which makes it easier to choose.

So many options!!! Big scrolls, little scrolls, pastries of all shapes and flavours, donuts, cronuts, muffins and cruffins. The scrolls are made out of brioche!!! This place is baked goods heaven.

We were late but managed one of the last cream cheese scrolls and it lived up to expectations. Will be back and earlier for the salted caramel one.
Hello. Imnikki
Went with the intention of buying just one scroll but left with three scrolls, a cruffin and a coffee. Didn't disappoint. Definitely would be back again.

Sweet addiction. Passed this pop up on my adventures in Collingwood and ducked in to peruse and sample their wares. They stock gourmet monsters like snickers with peanut and Nutella to simple gluten free chocolate fudge. I settled for a soy latte with a mango, yuzu and meringue scroll as the entry with a finishing blow of gluten free fudge. Wow. Just wow, a miraculous matching of flavours which dance along your tongue the yuzu is surprisingly complimentary to the mango within the scroll. I'd complain about the meringue on top only for the fact I seem to smear it everywhere. My partner was horrified at how messy I was - I can't be taken anywhere. But it was a beautiful and delicious scroll. The fudge was light and intense, while it was not your ubiquitous rich and heavy fudge it still had the cocoa intensity and fudge creaminess you desire when eating a chocolate fudge. The coffee was So-so, nothing to blow your mind but not burnt nor served too hot. I'd happily pop in when I'm after a quick coffee and guilty snack. Will make it point to visit again!

Scrolls have been taking over Instagram lately and it made me crave for it everytime I scroll down my Instagram feed. After a brunch session around Fitzroy area, I knew I had to get my hands on these babies. There were plenty of scrolls to choose from at Pop Up Scroll . We had one here and brought home two of them. Snickers Cruffin, 5AUD Cruffins (croissant + muffin) are possibly one of the best recent food inventions after cronuts. Thing is, I am not particularly sure which of the two were invented first but the trend goes, cronuts then cruffins. Lets face it, we are incontrovertibly croissant-crazed citizens! I had this cruffin with not just top heavy with melted Snickers, but it was also filled with plenty of snickers in the cruffin centre. The bread portion was exactly like that of a croissant, just in a muffin form. Banana & Peanut Butter Scroll, 4.50AUD This scroll uses a good classic pair of banana and sweetened peanut butter. With peanut bits for an added crunch. Cream Cheese Scroll, 4.50AUD Cream cheese never go wrong and the amount of it in proportion to the scroll itself was just right. These scrolls go so well coffee. Have it for breakfast with coffee or in the evening with tea, either way its good to go. 0 0 1 18 108 jeavne107@hotmail.com 1 1 125 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-ansi-language:EN-US;} Pop Up Scroll 86 Smith Street, Collingwood Melbourne, Victoria 3066 Australia Tel: +(61) 433 849 281 Mon to Fri: 8am-4pm Sat: 9am-4pm Sun: 10am-3pm

When you’re in need of a little sweet pick me up at the start of the week, what better way to to treat yourself than with a little sweet scroll from the Pop Up Scroll Shop. I have been hearing about these scrolls for quite some time, and was finally able to make my way to the store on Smith St. I prepared myself for the decadent day by walking all the way to the shop from Melbourne Central. By the time I reached the little boutique store, I was ready to buy one of everything. As you enter, there is a scroll menu by the door underneath the plush bear’s head. Better yet, once you make your way to the counter, everything is labelled at your convenience. I managed to exert some self control and not buy one of everything. Just one of everything that I thought looked really good. Cream Cheese $4.50 Banana and peanut butter $4.50 Both the cream cheese and banana with peanut were a no brainer for me. Especially the banana and peanut butter. It was like breakfast in a scroll. Both of these were my favourite of the four I chose. And I would come back particularly to buy lots more of the banana and peanut one for sure. The other two I chose were the Maple and Blueberry mini scroll $3.00 and the White Chocolate Coconut scroll $3.00 . These two were okay. They tasted more like fancy iced scrolls whereas the creamed filled ones were the big stars of the show. I love my scrolls, so I could only hope that one day they’ll open a store a little closer to home. On the other hand, it might actually be a good thing that they are so far away as well (for my waist at least). Pop Up Scroll knows scrolls like those boutique stores that do doughnuts and muffins, so I’ll be sure to drop on by again to grab some more of those banana and peanut butter morsels and maybe try out some of their cruffins too. Great scrolls and staff. I have been in here more than 3 times for my favourite chocolate scrolls. The scrolls are always delicious and the young staff are really lovely :)

Nice coffee and scrolls. Always have good service here, and the coffee and scrolls are amazing! Happened to have some delicious sourdough sticks when I was in there once which were freaking awesome. Really great, underrated cafe. Recommended.

Delicious scrolls!. We came here to try a couple of scrolls and ended up buying four as they all looked delicious and they were!! The coffee is ok, not as great as the owners previous cafe, Lip Cafe, but still good. Service is really nice too. The cafe is a bit on the small side so not really a place to sit and catch up with friends but a must try!

All were good, but the stand out for me was the pumpkin arancini. They were small and delicate but really tasty. In a way it was a shame that they were so small because I just wanted to eat more and more of them. But they were mezze and we needed to keep some space for our mains.

After brunch we went to Pop Up Scroll, which Wendy had really been looking forward to. We each bought a “cruffin” (croissant muffin) because we just cant resist a cute food hybrid. Luckily Pop Up Scroll lived up to the hype; both of our cruffins were delicious. They’re essentially just filled croissants shaped like muffins, so if you love croissants then you should definitely try these. If you’re looking for a muffin, go to a muffin store...

written by forfoodssake Bianca : Whilst this tale had a happy ending it started off as a somewhat nightmare, I usually pride myself on my organisational skills and to eat (not see) as much off Melbourne as possible I had to be pretty diligent with my coordinating. One absolute pre-requisite for this trip was the double patty smash burger from ‘Rockwell & Sons’, some plan swapping threw everything out the window so things got a little muddled. Which brought me to Collingwood at 12pm on a Wednesday, standing forlornly outside a shut Rockwell & Sons. Sadly this day was to be ‘smash’ free, I would be chasing that elusive burger till I left. It’s now my top priority next time I visit. After meandering along for a few minutes I remembered a place just up from Huxtaburger , pointed out to me by my pal Shancois (whom you met in our epic burger crawl here – http://forfoodssake.net/2015/02/23/the-great-melbourne-burger-crawl-of-2015-melbourne/ ). ‘ Po’Boy Quarter ’ offer Southern Style fare with the bulk of the menu revolving around the popular New Orleans sandwiches known as Po Boys, of which I tried in my US trip last year. It was a particularly hot day but that didn’t stop me I was clearly put on this earth to compete in my own daily version of the Food-lympics. Madre had the ‘Pulled Pork’ – Mesquite smoked pork w/house made Louisiana BBQ sauce, Cajun slaw and pickles. $12.90. I’ve been finding the quality of pulled pork lately rather dubious which is why I shied away from ordering this myself, mum kind of lucked out. This was a winner dish, the pork had a great depth of flavour due mainly to the dark unctuous bbq sauce. The traditional submarine style bread, very similar to a French baguette was the perfect vessel for the chosen ‘protein’ of the day, fluffy on the inside and a crisp exterior. I was taken by the sound of the ‘Deep Fried Chicken’ – Buttermilk marinated, Cajun spiced chicken w/coleslaw, tomato, pickles, Louisiana hot sauce & creole mayo. $12.90. It sounded g

Urgh it happened again, blogger didn't save any of my work :( and for some reason my internet has been horrible the whole day! First world problems right. Anyway, the annual Melbourne Food & Wine Festival is on again this year, and this is your final week to check out all events, with things happen in Melbourne CBD as well as surrounding suburbs.
Eat A Scroll: Clockwise from top left: Prices - $3 each or 4 for $10

...made away with a cream cheese scroll, a chocolate and caramel one and finally, one with peanut butter and banana. These 3 were brioche-based, although there are croissant-type ones too. I’ll be honest, I had them on the Monday later. And guess what, they were still fresh and delish. The scroll itself was soft and not too buttery and the filling was gentle with the amount of sugar in it. Even the chocolate and caramel scroll was just right in terms of sugar and richness, leaving you without the feeling of sick.

The next new "old thing" in sweets has "popped up" in Collingwood in the form of Pop Up Scroll. I'm always up for something sweet so Bubs and I dropped by for an early afternoon tea the other day. We were served by a couple of friendly ladies with cute little aprons and they were very nice to Bubs. He generally only likes to lick the icing off the top of cupcakes and has the ability to leave the cake perfectly in shape (eww), but to my surprise he wolfed down the mini scroll and we had to get another (bigger) one which he again devoured! The scrolls ($4.5, with mini versions for $3) are brioche based which explains the buttery softness. The original cream cheese is simply tasty and I can't blame Bubs for wanting more! We bought some more scrolls to take home after our afternoon feast. The Cherry and Pistachio had a delicious caramel topping that made me want to lick the screen of my camera just from taking a photo of it! The Cherry, Cream Cheese and Gingerbread was a bit fancier and had a lovely Christmas-y feel to it. And last but not least we tried the chocolate and caramel. Couldn't keep the little fingers from my photos, that's how much they liked it! Can't wait to go back and try more flavours. I am inspired to try my hand at making some at home too!
MEL: HOT OR NOT
...my recommendation is to buy mini scrolls ($3) rather than the large scrolls ($4) so that you can try more than one flavour. Other favourites include the peanut butter and banana and decadent chocolate with salted caramel. I’m not such a fan of the coconut and white chocolate scroll as the dessicated, caramelised coconut topping was tooth-achingly sweet, even for a seasoned sweet tooth like myself.
