You don’t even have to leave the Pacific Highway to find The Salty Dog Seafood Cafe and Gallery. It’s in Coolongoolook, which, at about three hours north of Sydney, is perfectly placed for a lunch pit stop on your way up the coast. I discovered it in back in 2012, and it hasn’t let me down yet. While the weekend menu is usually more exciting and extensive, on a rainy Wednesday morning they still managed to put out a chalkboard menu boasting four different local fishes – flathead, blackfish, mullet and whiting. Wow, totally agree what a find! Well worth the stop. Fish is super fresh, hamburgers are huge and salads are just enough to fill the hole.

Fresh, tasty seafood cooked perfectly. Great place to stop on your way up or down the coast. Salty Dog cafe is part of 3-4 other places, but this one is essentially a fish and chips. Outdoor dog friendly area that on our visit gave us shelter from the rain. We had the fish burger and the seafood basket. Nicely cooked. Not too oily and full of flavour.
Our friends recommended us to stop by this small Cafe on the way to Port Macquarie. We are glad that we followed their suggestion.

Salty dog Cafe serves fish and chips as well as burgers, stix etc. Pies and all day breakfast are sold at the other cafes on the same compound.
We had the Big Dog pack (similar to a seafood pack) and garlic prawn on sticks. The food was really good and more importantly we found it fresh.
So if you're travelling to or from the mid north coast, drop in and support these local businesses.
Stopped on our way to Forster and we were very happy with the food. It is not very visible from the main road, we almost missed it. Fresh fish and variety of options, due to time we only tried the Hoki and Whiting. Will definitely come back to try more.
What a great place! We have called in a few times over the years and have reviewed it before. Elle and I felt like a bit of fried fish and on a Monday it's a bit quiet. We ordered a Big Dog, it's fried fish and chips with calamari and prawns. Raymond did a brilliant job and in a few minutes delivered the most outstanding Frito Misto, the calamari is awesome and large rings, just perfect, tender and don't absolutely spot on. Great chips. Really great place, sit looking into the greenery, browse the artisan gift shop and eat great food. Nice in winter with the fire crackling.
I’ve stopped here on many occasions and the seafood is excellent! If you need a rest and a snack or some good food on your trip, stop here, there’s no crowds! Just good food
For a highway stop this is a solid 4 out of 5. Clean, nice tables out back and some grass area if you have a dog. Food is good. Beats a KFC type venue any day. Well worth a stop if you are travelling between Coffs and Sydney.
