We visited this small Japanese eatery for quick lunch on Saturday recently. We ordered Mackarel teishoku set and Spicy kaisen-don plus their special grilled pork with miso-marinate. All dishes are good, homey and hearty Japanese staples. We love all of them, though they're better off using pork belly for the grilled pork with miso marinate since pork-loin cut tends to be dried-out when grilled (not enough juicy fat). The service was adequate and the place though not big but has a charming ambience with smart Japanese style decoration. Prices on the lunch menu is competitive with similar offering in the area and quite good value for money. You can pay with credit cards including Amex with no additional surcharge - good customer service practice. The name of the restaurant in Japanese meant the number 86 - unsure what's the meaning behind the choice of specific number.

You have to go here. The teishoku meals are delicious and authentic (Ive been to Japan 8 times). The chirashi was very fresh and generous. I personally had the Hamburg which was massive (the other diners could not finish it...). The ginger pork teishoku was very flavoursome. It is an unassuming place and went beyond my expectations. Well priced too ($77.50 for 4). Been back about 5 more times. The curry is excellent and so are all the bento boxes. Also this place is BYO and very reasonable

Cute! Sorry for ugly pics. Kingfish was mega good! Exactly what I wanted that night 😚☺️ We also had the salmon belly gunkan (standard), potato croquettes (nice and crunchy), tuna sashimi (nice but very very small ☹️), calamari karaage (yummy!), and a teriyaki chicken roll (standard and satisfying). Prices were alright for the area, we spent around $75 to fill two people. Would come back again for the peaceful ambience, and next time we'll be sure to BYO for a nice sake finish ☺️

Great casual joint, very good prices that matched the neighbourhood vibe and quality of food ordered (not fine dining quality, but pretty fresh ingredients served.up). Had very fresh sushi, sashimi and their sashimi Kaiser Don with a generous dollop of ground yama (taro). They have an outdoor seating area so it should be dog friendly. Highly recommend!

Went for dinner and was delicious. Cheap price and excellent Japanese cuisine. Nicely decorated ! Excellent chef for sushi/sashimi. I recommend also the curry and ramen! Fresh food! Definitely a place to go before it becomes to popular !

A little out of the centre of both Crows Nest and St Leonards is this little hidden gem. There was no wait for us on a Friday night, and we were able to get a table straight away. It serves a good selection of sushi / sashimi, donburi and teishoku that are quite authentic. The prices of the dishes were very reasonable - there were four of us at dinner, and we ordered 4 mains and 6 side dishes - the total bill was only about 20 dollars a head. I quite enjoyed the grilled mackeral teishoku and as well as all the sides, although the eggplant miso was very oily. Would definitely recommend this place for a casual dinner with friends.

How am I only coming to this place now?? Ordered a Kaisen Don & a Tonkatsu Teishoku, and they taste amazing. Kaisen Don was superb and the flavour was really there. Sushi rice is on-point and they didn’t stick together. You can taste the freshness of the diced sashimi with homemade wasabis too! 10/10 Tonkatsu Teishoku was phenomenal too. The main dish was crunchy and nothing oily about it. Right amount of flavour and it wasn’t too pricy either. It was super authentic with all the side dishes made with great care. One thing I noticed is that the cabbages (as a side dish) are carefully sliced. Unlike other Japanese restaurants I have been to, they are not the “refrigerated crunchy”, rather it’s the freshness that made the crunchiness. Great details, flavour and pricing. It’s a great alternative to other Japanese joints eg. Yayoi with better quality of food! Will definitely come back for more!
