Specs: 1) Xiao Long Bao – 6pcs 2) Pan fried pork & chives dumplings – 6pcs 3) Pan fried prawn & chives pancake 4) Fisherman style eggplant hot pot. Growing up, all my precious childhood memories have been around sitting at the table, huddled against family, chopsticks-duelling over a big Chinese banquet. Food is what forges everyone closer, bringing a sense of belonging and tradition. There was usually a myriad of different dumplings, steamed buns, smokey stir-fries; conjuring a palette of colours and aromas. As a kid, there was absolutely nothing more exciting than food for me. As an adult…well, that hasn’t changed one bit.
I came here for the giant soup dumplings! Been wanting to try for the longest time. They take forever to steam though, because they're so big. They actually got our order wrong for some of the other dumplings, so be sure to have them read your order back to you.
So the food is alright and I'd like to come back to try different things. The giant dumpling was good, but damn the soup is hot and hard to drink out of a straw.
Love the dumplings and fried noodles. Have not tried the giant xiao long bao. Good casual local Chinese that is great for a quick meal. Will have to return to try dinner dishes
Great (friendly) service and my favourite spot for dumplings! Try the xiao long bao or pan fried mushroom dumplings. I keep coming back and haven't been disappointed. Sometimes we'll mix it up with a main dish, but we can never avoid the dumplings for too long.
I love this Chinese Bistro. The food is sensational and the service has always been very good. My favourite Chinese in Crows Nest by far. I have been to China and Hong Kong many times, I have also had dinner at all the top Chinese places in Sydney.
Been here a dozen times now. Edward and his wife are always happy to help and the food is the best. No need to head into Chinatown for dumplings now such delicious ones are available in Crows Nest! Amazing value too. I'll be back very soon and highly suggest you try them out.

Bistro Hulu is becoming one of my favorite casual Chinese restaurants in Sydney. On our latest visit, we ordered the fish maw and longan hotpot again (still as delicious), as well as the pan fried pork buns, steamed chicken with ginger and shallot sauce, vinegar pork ribs and cold sesame noodles. All were tasty and well-cooked. The pan fried pork buns in particular, were more delicate and fluffier than the ones you get in Taste of Shanghai (but would prefer a bit more pork filling).

I was pleasantly surprised by Bistro Hulu. Though service was a bit distracted, the food was delicious. The menu seems to change regularly but I'd recommend the chicken, fish maw and longan hotpot. This had chicken pieces, Chinese cabbage and slices of fish maw in a flavoursome broth sweetened by dried longan. We also had the pork ribs with grapefruit, a twist on the classic sweet and sour pork with a citrus tang. The prawns with seasonal vegetables was not particularly memorable either way. And lastly, we rounded off the meal with a simple but tasty vegetable dish of stir fried morning glory (kangkung) with fermented tofu. Good spot for a mix of classic and inventive Chinese dishes.
Giving in to my craving for Chinese food. Having walked past this bistro on the way to kürtösh for cakes and seeing the staff pull noodles and wrap dumplings and XLB. Comfort food! We ordered the lotus leave wrapped rice, kung pow chicken, pulled noodles with pork, san choy pow ,xlb and dumplings! Fine dining it's not but it's plenty comfort.
We ventured to Bistro Hulu one Friday afternoon to check out their dumplings. We tried many dumplings and many more signature dishes including the silken taro with sesame (yum), the cold spicy chicken (spicy and numbing) and morning glory. The main waiter (possibly the owner) was helpful and responsive and eager to make us feel happy and welcome. It was surprisingly BYO (yay) and reasonably priced. Definitely heading back when we are hankering for more dumplings.

Bit of a wait for dinner service, but all staff were nice and worked efficiently. We ordered the seafood stir fry hand pulled noodles, jumbo xiao long bao, pan fried mushroom dumplings, and silky taro with creamy sesame soy. At first it didn’t seem like enough, but by the end two people were satisfied.
The silky taro appetiser came with shredded cucumber and fungi, and for $6.80 I felt it was a nice accompaniment to the dumplings. It was quite light and refreshing.
Part of the reason I wanted to dine here was for the jumbo XLB, because quite frankly I can’t pass on novelty food items (not sure how unusual it really is but for me it was a first). It actually wasn’t as jumbo as I had imagined, but I had probably thought up a monster of a bun in my head in my eagerness. It was in reality quite tame, however proved to be a little inconvenient to eat. They gave us a big straw to slurp up the soup first and this took a good while. Now that I’ve had a go at the jumbo, I think in future I’ll just stick to the normal size. It was tasty, but I’m sure the smaller ones are just as good.
The pan fried mushroom dumplings are one of the recommendations but personally felt they fell a little short. Nice dumplings but nothing outstanding.
The noodles did a great job on filling us up, but was disappointed in the stinginess with the seafood. Had they included more, I think this would have been a great dish.
Lots of options to try, I wouldn’t mind going back.
