Review Tokyo Syokudo - Croydon

Jill Biddington
Seriously how is this restaurant hiding in Croydon? It is local to me so it feels like a great gift. Authentic, high quality Japanese food that is hard to find in the run of the mill food places. The food preparation, presentation and flavours are excellent. No need to travel into the city or over the Bridge, this place is great.

Don't eat here if you expect value for money. The food tastes nice enough, very standard, but the portion sizes are about 60-80% of a normal Japanese restaurant, and they left out one of the sides. When we asked the manager about the portion size, he very patronisingly said that the serves had always been like that and pointed out the prices of the raw ingredients as an explanation. Ok, I can understand that the raw ingredients are expensive, but other restaurants seem to manage just fine. We were very disappointed and won't buy from here again.

Great find in Croydon . Lots of Japanese restaurant in Sydney . But very hard to find authentic Japanese. Here is . Wagyu teriyaki is amazing. Recommend make booking before you come.

I have waited 23 minutes for nothing at all. Focus on the negative comments here as they are true.

Great quality food in a simple restaurant with BYO from the cellars next door.

Name has been changed to Ronin. Very basic interior and menu. Forget the starters. $8 for 1/2 a bowl of edamame and the same price for over fried lotus chips is a rort IMO. The waitress suggested salmon spring rolls; she should stop doing this. The Udon broth the we had was very salty. We also had the Pork Katsu which was fine. The 2 people working were very friendly and BYO is always a good thing.

Went for dinner tonight, it was freezing cold in the restaurant as a bunch of drunken diners insisted the front door remain open. As stated it was freezing cold inside the restaurant and the management let the drunks have their way at the expense of the other diners. I was a regular customer but I will NEVER go there again.

Got the food takeaway and while I had no issues with the food but my bento boxes, one teriyaki chicken and the other vege tempura, the vege tempura had 2 pieces of tofu but that was the only difference this and the teriyaki chicken (apart from the chicken obviously) vege sushi was disappointing <br/>

Had Omakase. Sushis are good. The shop is narrower than before. Taste and portion of food are good. Price is reasonable. Good place to for two people.

This is our usual place to dine if we want really yummy authentic Japanese food, my whole family and friends enjoyed the food every time! They do phone bookings and usually tried to accommodate us even without booking. The Salmon Belly sushi is definitely great value, so are the Lunch specials. Dinner menu is not big but all very delicious and freshly made.

Very good Japanese food. Bento boxes are great value and very filling. My family and I usually eat at Ashfield when we crave Japanese, but we've agreed this will be our new spot!

This place is a hidden gem, a small and cosy restaurant that serves excellent and authentic Japanese food. Was initially discouraged by the string of recent bad reviews, but IGNORE THE 1 STAR REVIEWS. I received nothing but the best customer service, and left incredibly satisfied. Definitely will be coming back, and I recommend non-locals to seek this place out.

This is THE best Japanese restaurant i have ever been to. The 1 star ratings on this website are complete nonsense. I would recommend anyone try it if they like Japanese. Please note: the restaurant seats about 20 people only so make sure to book in advance! The Tuna Sushi is so bloody delicious!

Worst customer service EVER!!! Ordered salmon sushi for $11 and the 4 pieces I got were less that the size of my thumb. After asking the lady at the front whether that was the whole serving she went and told the chef who came storming out, shoved the food in my face and yelled “THIS SIZE STANDARD EVERYWHERE!”, he then threw it in the fridge, said something in a foreign language and stormed into the back. So disgusted!!! Some people seriously need to learn how to behave like human beings!!! Do not go to this place ever!!!

lady waitress was very bad,i went to there with baby stroller she just said "we don't have space for that"<br/>i was surprise at least she should say "sorry"<br/>i know she's Japanese so am i. i've never seen like her attitude as waitress.she shouldn't work at restaurant.

The customer service was so so BAD, definitely not going to recommend to anyone!<br/>We booked a table online at 6:30 pm for birthday dinner.  We arrived there on time, but was told by the owner that our table was given to someone else as we did not turned up at 6:00 pm in a very impolite manner.  I then found my email confirmation & showed to him to prove that we indeed made the booking at 6:30 pm, but he did not bother to look at my mobile screen, shouting at us "I don't care, my system shows you book at 6:00 pm".  He did not even apologize to us & admit his mistake at all.  What an unprofessional service manner!

Another one of those unknown, great value gems in the unlikeliest of places. Tokyo Syokudo is a short order Japanese place with generous serves, efficient service and delicious food

I've been there many times. It's the only option around the area but food quality is outstanding.<br/>I always order the omakase (assorted nikiri sushi) and curry rice. Only down side of this place is you have to check when they open. They close during very odd times. But it is worth it to figure it out.

As a local, I've walked past Tokyo Syokudo hundreds of times but last night was my first visit. Gone was the familiar "EFTPOS is out of order" sign. It was time to enter.<br/><br/>Despite being a busy Saturday night, I was accommodated without a booking. I had limited time before the next customer had booked my table but it wasn't a problem. Service was fast and friendly - I ordered the Tokyo Toy Box, which was expedited in the kitchen under special instructions. Dishes were pumped out in quick succession; I was in and out in 40 minutes with a full belly.<br/><br/>The Tokyo Toy Box is an easy way to sample a variety of flavours. All of the food was fine. I liked the fresh wasabi served with my sashimi and the mayo accompanying my piping hot karaage chicken. Ordering tea is a good move - you get a small pot of loose leaf green tea with that lovely roasted rice aroma.<br/><br/>As for ambience, it's a comfortable place to enjoy a casual meal, whether you're dining with others or flying solo. It's reassuring to hear Japanese spoken amongst the staff. On the night that I went, there wasn't a hint of the food-prepping theatrics mentioned by the previous reviewer but personally I'd love to see it! The small space has a cosy vibe without feeling overcrowded. Rock music was playing softly in the background, which I liked but jazz music might suit the intimate space better.<br/><br/>Tokyo Syokudo hits the spot if you're feeling peckish for Japanese food in the area. I had a more satisfying meal here than at other Japanese restaurants within walking distance of Croydon. I will return.

The direct translation for Tokyo Syokudo is Capital Food Temple. This "Temple" is rather tiny so you may want to book, take away or start early. The chef prepared the food in a rather theatrical manner reminding me of the priest in the altar.<br/><br/>The service is very good, the waitstaff keeps on apologising for not getting the food out quickly enough. Just for the record it took the "Priest" twenty minutes to prepare the food. Maybe they should focus more on efficiency rather than the theatrical aspect of their cooking.<br/><br/>We ordered Tokyo Toy Box, Wagyu udon and Soft Shell crab. <br/><br/>The winner is definitely the Tokyo Toy box which is a set menu which comprises of Miso soup, Adegashi Tofu, Sashimi, Tempura, Fried Chicken, Rice and Salad. Not only this is the yummiest of them all, it also provides the biggest bang for your bucks.<br/><br/>Next is the Wagyu Udon. I doubt the Wagyu is from good quality butcher or comes from a great cut. It is very chewy and doesn't taste like a Wagyu. The udon is very nice though, not too chewy and not too soft. The Udon soup is also just about right. Not too bland but not too savoury.<br/><br/>We advise against ordering their Soft Shell Crab unless you like being ripped off. It comprises of five tiny little pieces.  It does taste okay but nothing to write home about.<br/><br/>Bottom line: Good food. Good service. Average value.

The only Japanese option in the suburb and it's real good! Sit down meals available but you can grab sushi to-go from the front cabinet some days too. Only a small sitting area so bookings recommended.

Ordered the karage chicken udon and it took a long time to come out, probably 20 minutes? Sizing was smaller than i expected as well, for $12 but it tasted very nice though. Probably wouldn't come again though, maybe once more.

All the food except the Wagyu main was brilliant. The cut was not great so didn't melt in your mouth. Should have gone with the thin sliced beef instead. Everything very fresh and tasty. Great bottle"o" next door.

You must go! But book first. This place is hella cute and seems to be a family run business. Pork belly and soft shell crab were amaze. Sushi is super fresh too! And its BYO beer and wine - bottleo is next door!

Had dinner here tonight, being told as two diners we can only sit outside and it was so cold tonight! Well the food is nice and authentic, would recommend soft shell crab, toy bento and wagyu beef.

Delicious and Fresh. I am basically hooked on their fresh tuna sushi rolls! Honestly, no other sushi place does it like these guys. I cant actually go to other sushi stores now because it doesn't even seem worth it anymore . I think the success is due to the large amount of filling that they give you in each sushi, the fact that it is made fresh on the spot and that the food genuinely tastes Delicious. My 3 Favorites are:<br/><br/>> The cooked Tuna with Cucumber sushi roll <br/>> Chicken Katsu sushi roll (not made at dinner time)<br/>> Teriyaki chicken Sushi roll <br/><br/>If you love sushi like me, then i urge you to try out this store.

Unassuming little restaurant delivers delicious dishes!. Great little gem with a homey atmosphere-nothing flash but nice service and great tasty meals. Always busy and it's quite small, so it's can be pot luck with getting a table without a booking. Worth it though :)

The service is terrible. S.... The service is terrible. <br/>So embarrassing to see their awful service as a Japanese. <br/>Food is ok.

Nice neighbourhood eatery run by Japanese people. Sushi & sashimi platter: could have been fresher but not too bad, however some cuts if the sushi were not right and therefore a bit lacking... Tokyo toy bento box (karaage, sashimi, tempura etc) was standard fare, not much to brag about nor criticise. Overall, average. Won't be rushing back too soon as it's also a bit overpriced.

Great food and value for money menu . 2 of us dine here for $50 . Really like the soft shell crab . Salmon toro is fresh and much cheaper than normal price at Sushi Train

Delicious, friendly, excellent.. I eat regularly at Tokyo Syokudo - both in the restaurant and takeaway. The food is excellent, the service is great, and the staff are friendly. It's a simple little hole in the wall restaurant with some tables inside and a few tables out on the pavement.<br/><br/>I regularly eat the tempura vegetable main which is excellent, the agedashi tofu which I can't fault. Their sashimi is high quality, and their karaage delicious.<br/><br/>If you want somewhere to go for a no nonsense delicious japanese meal, I'd definitely recommend it. If you're particular about eating in, it's best to reserve a table, as they get very busy at dinner time!

Konichiwa good food. It might operate in a tiny sphere but the quality and taste of food of this place blows the front doors out. Huge menu, which is rather ironic but the food is first class. The tempura is light and delicate; the sashimi creamy and fresh; the prawn curry subtle and balanced; the pork belly was soft and sweet... I can go on but I won't. Just remember to get in early and tuck those chair in, otherwise it's takeaway time.
