Had Omakase. Sushis are good. The shop is narrower than before. Taste and portion of food are good. Price is reasonable. Good place to for two people.
This is our usual place to dine if we want really yummy authentic Japanese food, my whole family and friends enjoyed the food every time! They do phone bookings and usually tried to accommodate us even without booking. The Salmon Belly sushi is definitely great value, so are the Lunch specials. Dinner menu is not big but all very delicious and freshly made.
Very good Japanese food. Bento boxes are great value and very filling. My family and I usually eat at Ashfield when we crave Japanese, but we've agreed this will be our new spot!
This place is a hidden gem, a small and cosy restaurant that serves excellent and authentic Japanese food. Was initially discouraged by the string of recent bad reviews, but IGNORE THE 1 STAR REVIEWS. I received nothing but the best customer service, and left incredibly satisfied. Definitely will be coming back, and I recommend non-locals to seek this place out.
This is THE best Japanese restaurant i have ever been to. The 1 star ratings on this website are complete nonsense. I would recommend anyone try it if they like Japanese. Please note: the restaurant seats about 20 people only so make sure to book in advance! The Tuna Sushi is so bloody delicious!
Another one of those unknown, great value gems in the unlikeliest of places. Tokyo Syokudo is a short order Japanese place with generous serves, efficient service and delicious food
I've been there many times. It's the only option around the area but food quality is outstanding.
I always order the omakase (assorted nikiri sushi) and curry rice. Only down side of this place is you have to check when they open. They close during very odd times. But it is worth it to figure it out.

As a local, I've walked past Tokyo Syokudo hundreds of times but last night was my first visit. Gone was the familiar "EFTPOS is out of order" sign. It was time to enter.
Despite being a busy Saturday night, I was accommodated without a booking. I had limited time before the next customer had booked my table but it wasn't a problem. Service was fast and friendly - I ordered the Tokyo Toy Box, which was expedited in the kitchen under special instructions. Dishes were pumped out in quick succession; I was in and out in 40 minutes with a full belly.
The Tokyo Toy Box is an easy way to sample a variety of flavours. All of the food was fine. I liked the fresh wasabi served with my sashimi and the mayo accompanying my piping hot karaage chicken. Ordering tea is a good move - you get a small pot of loose leaf green tea with that lovely roasted rice aroma.
As for ambience, it's a comfortable place to enjoy a casual meal, whether you're dining with others or flying solo. It's reassuring to hear Japanese spoken amongst the staff. On the night that I went, there wasn't a hint of the food-prepping theatrics mentioned by the previous reviewer but personally I'd love to see it! The small space has a cosy vibe without feeling overcrowded. Rock music was playing softly in the background, which I liked but jazz music might suit the intimate space better.
Tokyo Syokudo hits the spot if you're feeling peckish for Japanese food in the area. I had a more satisfying meal here than at other Japanese restaurants within walking distance of Croydon. I will return.

The direct translation for Tokyo Syokudo is Capital Food Temple. This "Temple" is rather tiny so you may want to book, take away or start early. The chef prepared the food in a rather theatrical manner reminding me of the priest in the altar.
The service is very good, the waitstaff keeps on apologising for not getting the food out quickly enough. Just for the record it took the "Priest" twenty minutes to prepare the food. Maybe they should focus more on efficiency rather than the theatrical aspect of their cooking.
We ordered Tokyo Toy Box, Wagyu udon and Soft Shell crab.
The winner is definitely the Tokyo Toy box which is a set menu which comprises of Miso soup, Adegashi Tofu, Sashimi, Tempura, Fried Chicken, Rice and Salad. Not only this is the yummiest of them all, it also provides the biggest bang for your bucks.
Next is the Wagyu Udon. I doubt the Wagyu is from good quality butcher or comes from a great cut. It is very chewy and doesn't taste like a Wagyu. The udon is very nice though, not too chewy and not too soft. The Udon soup is also just about right. Not too bland but not too savoury.
We advise against ordering their Soft Shell Crab unless you like being ripped off. It comprises of five tiny little pieces. It does taste okay but nothing to write home about.
Bottom line: Good food. Good service. Average value.
The only Japanese option in the suburb and it's real good! Sit down meals available but you can grab sushi to-go from the front cabinet some days too. Only a small sitting area so bookings recommended.
Seriously how is this restaurant hiding in Croydon? It is local to me so it feels like a great gift. Authentic, high quality Japanese food that is hard to find in the run of the mill food places. The food preparation, presentation and flavours are excellent. No need to travel into the city or over the Bridge, this place is great.
