Review Afghantasty Food - Dandenong

Jesse Wilson
Had an absolutely amazing experience here yesterday with my partner. The food was fresh and delicious. A big highlight was the Afghani rice and Burani. Wow, what an incredible balance of flavours and aromas. Top it off, the friendly owner even gave us some delicious Afghan bread after we had a wonderful conversation with him as we paid for the bill. Highly recommend this place for an amazing, authentic Afghan food experience.

Take away afghan bread, took longer than expected but the lady at front was very friendly and accommodating though the decor was questionable. Spent most of my time wondering what look were they trying to accomplish. But the bread was tasty and mother says so too

Great food and good serve sizes. The kebabs are grilled on charcoal at the front counter.

Never seen the food is so expensive in Afghan restaurants in Dandenong!!!! Sorry never comeback. I ordered 2 rices with lamb kebab! It only had a little bit lamb and no salad and no sauces!!! The costs were $32 for with rice with lamb and quabuli rice with lamb!!! The high rate was not true or it just has different service treatment because I donā€™t speak your language! Never have bad mood when see the food is overpriced and just normal! Service is just average! Wait too long while the restaurant is not busy! Thanks for giving a memorial experience of your restaurant!!!

Nice and welcoming. The food so delicious. This is my first time for Afgan foods.

The food was tasty and the restaurant was nice and clean. The portion was quite generous as well. I have not had Afghan cuisine before so I canā€™t make any comparison. However Iā€™ll visit again. The only min point was that the didnā€™t serve water.

The Bolani here is the best in all of Melbourne. The owner and his staff make your dining so much fun. Great customer service. You feel the love in the food.

Delicious food good service, bread was yummy all in all had good experience.

The food was real good but they may need more staff to entertain customers on time.

Great food. Really tasty kebab and mantu.

A really good Afghan restaurant with great food and very reasonably priced. Kebabs were tender and moist. The Bolani is a must try and was so tasty. We loved the eggplant dish and really enjoyed the lamb curry with the most yummy rice.
Give this place a go. Itā€™s really worth it.
3.5

I freaking love this place I didnā€™t find it too expensive I found the flavours to be original and true. So glad I walked in and stuck my head in as this is not my normal go to Afghanistan restaurant. What I do like about this particular place is the fact that they use fresh ingredients I was a little bit worried given the area that the quality may have dropped off but that is definitely not the case and you can taste it by the authenticity and I love they put into their food. Another good thing for a first timer is the staff their will give you any detail about anything on their menu I will deconstruct in detail how things are cooked and what they are cooked with which is a rarity these days.

The food was absolutely fragrant and balanced. First time trying Afghan cuisine and was not disappointed at all. The owner was incredibly generous, authentic and kind. I look forward to returning!

I went today in the hope the food will be decent.. the rice wasnt that bad but the lamb curry that came along with it seemed atleast 3-4 days old.. it had a smell! The chapli kebabs weren't nice .. they weren't fresh. The tikkas didn't seem fresh either. Seems like $50 wasted! Saw reviews online and went but my experience was not good.. very disappointed!

Afghan Tasty Food has been open for almost a decade, and in that time has become an institution for those looking for authentic Afghan food in Melbourne. It was opened by Muheen Bahrami, moved to Australia in 1991 after fleeing Kabul.

I visited this restaurant last week and I must say that if you want Afghan food which has value for money then you must come to this place.
I ordered qabuli set A with chicken korma which was delicious, the bread was just right to soak all the curry. My hubby had mayecha palaw (lamb leg with qabulj rice) which was also delish. I noticed that mayecha palaw wasn't always available at any Afghan restaurant so I'd highly recommend this dish.
The staff was also friendly and helpful.
We'd surely come back here whenever I had cravings for Afghan food :)

I tried the mantu dumplings and the lamb kebab skewer. The mantu dumplings came with 10 pieces. The mantu mince was nice as was the toppings however it lacked fillings. The lamb kebab skewer was well cooked but could have been marinated better.

The food was decent but my friend and I both got pretty terrible food poisoning afterwards. Ā Also, I ordered a meal that was listed on the menu as costing $14.90 but the person who took my order "haggled" me up to $15.00. Ā What on earth?

Solid little afghan place. We ordered the $25per head banquet for which we got a lamb curry, bread, Maantu dumplings, and a lamb and chicken skewers. All the meats were cooked over charcoals in front of us (if you're wondering what the smell is when you walk in) and we noticed the bread was a drawcard with people turning up to just make purchases of that alone. The curry was delicious, oily, but thats now those currys roll and their perfect for sopping up left over bread.

As a warning, when we went, service was slowwwww and ambience was zero but I'm only about the food so I look past that. If you're precious about those you'll need to put that aside.

Good service. Good food. Good range of food choices. Lots of happy people when we eat here. I even got a bonus of $50 from Liven. Overall, geat place. Ā Planning to go back here real soon!

Really delicious authentic Afghan food. The fresh bread is delicious and the servings are huge. A banquet for two could comfortably feed 3-4 people. All for only 25 a head. Would highly recommend.

Absolutely some of the most delectable food I've ever eaten. Its outstandingly delicious I could go on and on, vegetarians welcome to heaven. Sure, the look of the place is simple and it could also definitely do with some music to help the ambience but who cares when the food is just so damn good. Thank you for your beautiful dishes.

Easily my favourite Afghani restaurant ever.
Tikka kebab is my go to. And the bolani with potatoes are amazing.

Nothing comes close unless you've had the pleasure of eating in the motherland

Great food and Omar is an awesome owner, his been running this place for 16 years! You can really feel the level of care that he puts into both his product and his customers. We will be back soon!

It was just average food. The place was empty when we got there. I ordered manto reading all the reviews here. It was served cold and tasted quite average and bland. Chicken korma with rice was nothing close to what I expected. Lack of flavor in curry and pulao
The only thing fresh and good was the bread served with manto.

Tried Afghan cuisine at this venue for the first time and must say - it was soo friggin delicious! Came here with 5 other friends and we opted for 3x $25pp banquets and 2x $25pp vegetarian banquets. We were very surprised at how much food came out! We were so satisfied and full by the end of the night. We loved every dish and i personally will be returning. Female waiter was also friendly and helpful! (Photos attached) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Thumbs up

Went hear on our way back home from Melbourne and really enjoyed it. The manto was a definite highlight. The Bolani provide a good vegan option. Overall, a great feed.

What a wonderful dining experience!Ā The Manto was amazingly tasty, and he had the kebabs with mint dressing served on some really dangerous looking long skewers!Ā The chicken with the rice with orange, and the lamb with the rice and currents was great.Ā Plus the bread and yoghurt dip, a great place to eat.Ā Ā I have recommended this on my personal fb page to all our friends in the hope they will eat there and support a great local business.

Wow, the manti (Afghani lamb dumplings) covered in spicy minty yoghurt are really to die for, so good! Pilaf with orange peel and currants was simple yet absolutely delicious. They were cooking kebabs over charcoal and it smelt out of this world good, will have to come back for these.

Love afghani food and will have to say this is one of the better if not the best in Dandenong. There are others in the area that provide beautifully fresh food but for price, this place tops it for value!

My regular place to go to when I'm craving some Afghan. The food is definitely tasty. We normally order some of the chicken on skewers that's cooked over a charcoal grill - softest chicken ever! The manto is also delicious and we can never say no to the rice with orange, pistachio and almond coupled with the chicken korma and spinach (yes we eat a lot!). My mouth is watering thinking about it. The guy who is normally there is very friendly and remembers us, greeting us and has nice chats each time we're there. Don't let the location or interior of the place give you the wrong impression as the food is amazing. We have also on many occasions ordered take away for dinner events and everyone has always raved on about how good the food is. Highly recommend!

- H

First time foodie at an Afghani restaurant in Melbourne and it was really tasty! Don't let the decor of the restaurant turn you away, as this hidden gem certainly delivers. Service was a little slow, staff are so friendly and inviting

This place is a gem! Don't let the divey look turn you off.the food is unpretentious and incredibly delicious.if you are new to Afghani cuisine, try their standard banquet. Their grilled meat are done over charcoal which packs it full of flavour. Their manto are absolutely to die for!

First time to eat Afghan food. A friend and I decided to try this restaurant for the first time. It was truly amazing so tasty and filling. The owner was so helpful with selecting from the menu. He brought us samples of other food to try for our next visit. Kept coming over to us to make sure everything was ok and we were enjoying the food. To finish he brought us a cup of lemon tea which was sweetened with honey. A great night and so reasonably priced. Will definitely go back with the family.

The meal was very tasty - the salad fresh and the Afghan bread to die for.

We ended up going here bc the restaurant next door was close. We walked in and saw the menu on the board but there were no prices shown. It was all on the small menu.

We got a rice combo & meat on stick. Food was tasty enough but overpriced. No water was given during the service & the service was ordinary. There were flies around the place. I suggest encouraging staff to be more engaging and show a bit more value add to the food.

Man oh manto!. I had not realised what an Afghan town Dandenong was. When I lived in Melbourne from 2005-2009 I passed through on the Princes Highway a few times, and I'd hear items on the TV news about troubles with Somali youth. But it wasn't until I came down for an evening shift at the town hospital that I saw the Afghan influence. Since I had built in time to walk around town and have lunch, I HAD to eat Afghan food.

I didn't want kebab skewers or palau, either. I had those at lotsa Afghan restaurants. I looked in the window at Afghan Tasty and saw they sold "manto." Ā first time I saw them on a menu. (I've since learned they're not uncommon.) I always go for something novel, so I had a plate. Manto must translate to "ravioli" in Pashto or Dari. I see similarities to Chinese dumplings too. Small wheat pastas crimped around lamb mince, topped with a mild tomato sauce and yoghurt. Afghan food is seasoned more mildly than other northern Subcontinent cuisines, so it was tasty in a mellow way.

I wouldn't mind going back to Afghan Tasty to try some of their kebabs, which come with a huge piece of bread that's shaped like Iranian sangak. The restaurant is clean, well-lit and airy inside. There was a mix of Anglo and Afghan customers when I was there, always a good sign. And the family that runs it seems nice. As I left, the young man who was in charge was sitting outside with a toddler boy who I presume was his son. The boy got a mouthful of water from the bubbler and playfully spat it on his father's sleeve. The guy just laughed and told the boy not to do that, but didn't smack him one. Must be Hazara -- I think a spitty child would definitely get a biffo under Pashtunwali!

Nice, homely food. I guess this is related to the CBD one, but I prefer here. No dodgy buffet but they make it all for you. We had the lamb skewers, which comes with salad and lots of fresh, hot turkish style bread and a curry with that great rice that also has carrot and sultanas in it. Cost us 30 bucks for a very filling and tasty meal for two. Plus you can check out the kitchen on your way to the toilet. Takes a while for them to make it but I don't mind, better than the other way round - I am suspicious if it is too quick! Next time we are out this way I'm sure we will check it out again.

Slightly disappointed.... Afghan Tasty Food

I ordered the Qabuli Palow (with orange, pistachio and almond), but was served the one with carrot, sultana and almond minusthe almond!). Whatever, mistakes happen. It came with a lamb korma. Both were okay meals, although the rice was extremely simple and lacked flavour, and the lamb was bland and slightly tough. At $12, you can do much better elsewhere.
Also the $1.50 bread was rubbish. I overhead the very friendly owner talking about another bread with some other customers, but what I ate tasted mass produced and was likely heated in a microwave. Certainly not straight out of the oven.
There was no table service after bringing me my food, but the owner and front counter girl were polite and pleasant.
Sparse and plain decor to match the food.
Heard a customer talking about the Ashak, so will return simply to try this, otherwise wouldn't bother.

There is an abundance of Afghan restaurants in Dandy. The default standard is big chunky charcoal meat kebabs, served with salad, chilli sauce, and enough Afghan bread to give someone on a low carb diet a heart attack. I sampled the $15 chicken kebab meal at this place, and it was the kebabs that made the meal. The marinade and spices on the chicken were excellent, and formed a nice crust whilst the chicken was still tender on the inside. I was impressed and will make a return visit.

Delicious. You will find in this plain non descript restauant on Lonsdale Street in Dandenong the most delicious Afghani food. I have been going there for years and can recommend everything on the menu.

Beautiful flavours, nice friendly service. Ptetty basic set-up but good value and welcoming.

What a surprise. I went to this unassuming Lonsdale Street Eatery with absolutely no expectations. To me Afghan food would probably be chick pea fritters and a handful of Kababs.
How wrong I was. What I discovered was a whole new taste sensation. The Salads were amazing, the meat full of flavour and the sweets well I'm not a big sweet eater but this was so good,
The owner told me that Afghan and other people of the region come from all over Melbourne to eat here and sure enough 15 minutes later I was talking to a truck driver from Ballarat who stocks up on his run through from Hastings every week.
The prices aren't super cheap and the decor is plain but the food is well worth a trip to an area that is growing in reputation for diverse and affordable dining experiences.
Don't even try to order from the menu if you're not sure ask them to make a recommendation, I did and I was grateful for it.

Now, the mains - yum, YUM, YUMMY. To share, we got the shami - beef kebabs. Juicy, deeply spiced (complex flavours), tender beef. I gave up trying to determine the many herbs and spices there were - I could taste cardamom. I've never had kebabs quite like this. They just slid off the metal holders. They were juicy but not fatty, and had a hint of smokiness from it being flame-grilled.
