Review King Jade Chinese Restaurant - Doncaster

Jeffrie Trika
9/10 crispy Pork belly and BBQ pork on egg noodles for lunch, just right. More dishes on their extensive Menu, I guess more good Cantonese food.
Lester Mark
Good standard Chinese food at this busy, small suburban restaurant. Decor is basic, service is quick and staff friendly. Loved the oysters with xo sauce.
Casey Chong
Good and friendly service. Very reasonable priced and good qualities and choices of Chinese cuisine.

Nice authentic cantonese food. Too bad the fried milk was out last time I visited

We used to come to King’s jade very often until they changed hands few time in last few years. We happen to be in the area today and needed to have a quick lunch. We ordered the roast pork and duck dry noodles. Both turned out to be delicious. Beside the usual Chinese restaurant service, King’s Jade is now back to our local restaurant list.

Eaten here many times, one of the many small restaurants in Doncaster. Fairly basic decor with an Asian flavour. Typical Chinese restaurant menu, Beef in black bean, chicken in black bean, pork in black bean etc. Lots of seafood choices and the food is always fresh and tasty and quickly prepared even when they are busy. Unusually they also have a counter at the front selling meat by weight: BBQ Pork, Roast Pork, Roast Duck, Chicken etc sold by weight and cut up to order into bite size pieces. We occasionally buy the ready cooked meat here as take away. Bit of rice and stir-fry vegies at home and a quick and tasty meal.

very bad customer service and no ethics. 1st time there. Ordered fried rice w no pork n the lady did not take the order properly and argued later that i did not specify that. Then she still insisted on paying for the dish (which i did), but if they have some ethics, they should not charge for the dish that i am not going to eat for religious reason. Never going there again. minus 5 star.

The local Chinese restaurant. The one we go to when no one wants to cook, but we still want good food. The place we go to for those dishes that we can't (or won't) cook at home.

We had a geat meal there. Egg plant with Seafood stuffing, beef stir fry with Chinese broccoli, seafood hot pot. All very authentic Cantonese. The place was full and lots of ppl order takeaway. We had pretty good service. Would take friends there next time.

I came by to buy a roast duck and some char siu to takeaway. The place was pretty quiet for dinner time on a weekday. I suspect there has been another change of management recently.

The roast duck was very meaty and tasty. The various spices were very prominent and while the skin was no longer crispy, the meat itself was full of flavour. The char siu was disappointingly dry and mundane. Just as well that I did not get a large amount.

Service was cold and unwelcoming, a backwards step from my previous experience. So it looks like it might be heading back to the bad old days....

Previously:

It was meat night tonight so we ordered a trio of roasted meats from this ever green restaurant nestled in the middle of a row of great eats.
The roast duck was fresh, meaty and crispy. Loved the accompanying savoury sauce! The char siu was moist and well seasoned. And finally, that lovely peppery sausage rounded out our perfect triad.
Service was surprisingly friendly and accommodating....we used to be greeted by scowls so I suspect there's been a recent changing of the guard.
This place is aptly named as they serve food fit for a king!

Go to roast meat on rice. So yummy and reasonably priced. Keep ordering takeout and very satisfied with meals. Bonus points for brocolli on side!!!

This restaurant is just at the same row as Ampang Yong Tau Foo and Malayan Inn where most Asian goes for their lunch or dinner. Once a while will try this restaurant for dinner or takeaways. Their roasted BBQ duck or roasted pork are most popular. Prices are fair for eating in or takeaways. Recently I went again for dinner and didn’t order much as it is only two of us. At least the staff are friendly and didn’t complain that we ordered too few dish. The soup and dessert are served free of charge. We enjoyed our meal and even happy to pay the return change as tips. Most important is the staff must be pleasantly serving the customers with a cheerful look.

Have not been here for a while. Not sure how many times they have changed hands. Used to be a popular place for the Chinese who live around Doncaster.
Still remained very much a local eating place. Decor was neat and clean. You get a plate of prawn chips. Kids loved them.
We had the usual dishes like salt and pepper flounder, fried stuffed tofu, roast pork and duck double, Cha Siu omelette and combination fried noodles. Apart from the omelette looking a bit messy and dry the rest of the dishes tasted ok and portion size was good. ,
However the final cost was very expensive for such a setup. This might explain why most customers were not Asian.
And by the way the attached menu is very much out of date.

Very unassuming restaurant from the outside, had no expectations.

Came inside, was seated with prawn crackers and tea.

Menu a tiny bit confusing but had nice imagery.

Had the steamed scallops with vermicelli and garlic which was decent for starters.

The soy chicken was a good standard.

We had steamed barramundi with ginger which was cooked very well and delicious sauce.

The chicken ribs with salted egg yolk is also another winner.

The eggplant and tofu filled with fish paste was also a great dish.

We had mixed veges, stir fried Chinese broccoli and pea shoots sauteed with mushrooms. All pretty standard and would order again.

Great food, was so stuffed when we left! Would come back again.
Silk Road
Upon entry a very unassuming restaurant. However the food was amazing. We had a stuffed bean curd with was goo as any high end restaurant I have eaten at. the steam white chicken was moist and delicious as was the fish and vegetables. We finished of with Banana fritters which was typical with a very heavy batter unfortunately. But a great little gem to dine in.

Came in on a whim when the place next door was closed for the day. The little boss lady that runs the place has a massive chip on her shoulder. Seated me with no cutlery or tea. When I asked for a fork (because how do you eat otherwise ?) and some water she angrily retorts ‘is there anything else so I don’t have to come back?!’ I have to say she got my order wrong when it came out but I quietly ate it and paid up because who wants spit in your food. Come here if you want to be abused by the wait staff.

Great service, food was good and the portion was great for the price point. Amazing service and staff was friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Been here many times with the family. I highly recommend to anyone that loves Chinese. One of my favourite dishes is the Peking duck delish. Staff is so friendly. Keep it up King Jade !

No dinner crowd, easy parking, good food (literally everything we ordered was good), and speedy, attentive service. Plus the kids ate everything. I'd say it checks all the boxes. Don't forget to try the roast pork - that's really good. Love the beef brisket - that was brilliantly done, meltingly tender. The red bean dessert was a simple affair, but very well executed. Smooth, flavoursome without being overly sweet.

Will have to call in and order the lobster noodles next time.
Defiant
Great food all round whether it's lunch or dinner.

The roast meats are great especially the duck and crispy pork. The crispy pork isn't too salty like a lot of other places.

The owners are friendly. Just good honest food.

Ever since this place changed ownership, we hardly patronize it anymore. For the few times we were there, the new owner NEVER FAILS TO DISAPPOINT!

New owner is terribly rude and really there's nothing special about their foods, sub-standard by far, mere typical Cantonese foods that could easily be found in any other Cantonese eatery.

Don't bother going there if you're only getting a small take-away or don't intend to spend big on your meals. The female owner looks down on those who don't order big. Greedy Swine!
Dennis Wong
Amazing Cantonese Bbq restaurant. It's very hard to find a place with cheap price with quantity and quality! Love their roast pork which the skin was so crispy!
Food Lover
Confusing menus. One on Zomato different to one on their website.
The duck and roast pork were yummy but lacked a bit of extra flavour or sauce. Mixed veggies in oyster sauce only had zucchini and Chinese brócoli. Expected more variety. Overall it was well made and would try again
Munching Pandas
Being around the area, decided to give this restaurant a try. This place is also famous for its fried milk and BBQs. Quite spacious for a Chinese restaurant though.

Pandas 🐼🐼🐼:
Crispy pork BBQ -perfectly seasoned and crackled
Fried milk - sweet, crispy, creamy; and it’s nothing like you have imagined before, just give it a try.
Foods were overall quite tasty and nice.
Good service, very friendly and quick

Pandont❌❌❌:
Very difficult to reach, won’t be bothered to travel all the way to Doncaster just for them.
Nothing’s that special: (fried milk is the exception) you can find Chinese restaurants in the city that taste as good or even much better than them
Ordered the stuffed beancurd but it came up dissapointing as the beancurd taste nothing and the filling is really small.

Steven Gu
Kings jade BBQ restaurant in Doncaster. Like the BBQ pork and roasted duck. Deep fried chicken is also tasty. A nice place to eat when you are really hungry
Josephine
Definetly feels like your typical Chinese restaurant with all their specials written in Chinese all over the walls and being crammed onto a small table.
Food was good though. I always judge a Chinese restaurant on how much water I need to consume after eating at a Chinese restaurant because the more I quench my thirst, the more MSG they use in their dishes, which is a bad sign.
Pecking duck looked really sad on the plate. Most restaurants would cut the pieces finely and evenly but here, they partially butchered the best bits. The highlight was the deep fried baramundi which was cooked to perfection. I also quite liked their pepper soup with pork. It's really pepper-y which I like and quite unique which I haven't tasted before. Overall, good place to go to for a quick Chinese fix. I didn't have to drink THAT much water which is also a good sign
Theknifeandforktalk
This place was crazy busy! We were squished onto a table where even the wait staff struggled to get to us due to the other tables being so close together. Food was delicious. Chicken with cashew was lacking in flavour. Beef and black been was delicious. Duck was well cooked. Scallops nice but personally would rather not have the tail and some still had the poo line still attached. I found the food quite pricey as well compared to other places in the area. Couldn’t stop eating the Chinese broccoli.
David
Chicken was undercooked and duck was greasy and full of fat. I won’t be returning to this place ever again. The tea thermos was half full and my wife got sick after eating some of the chicken. Table service was also terrible. Didn’t get asked if we wanted water or a drink, had to call them over to take our dinner order. When we called to inform the owner rather that berating him in front of his customers, he basically told us he didn’t care and didn’t even offer an apology! Stay clear of this place...dirty dingy and unhygienic!!

Wanted to go to the Malaysian place next to it but it was closed today. So went over to King's Jade to have the much raved roast pork and duck here. For $11.80 (add $1 for two types of meat), this is one of the places that still charge a lower price as compared to other Asian restaurants. Roast pork was moist and the skin had a nice crunch to it, and I can see why it's so popular among netizens, but the roast duck was really bony and ordinary. I've had better roast duck than this- sorry. Chilli oil had a stale oil taste. I don't know why when I finished my rice and was enjoying my cup of tea, one of the older female servers shouted to the cashier to show me the bill when I hadn't even asked for it. I understand it was lunch time but there are still many tables empty- so why the hurry, when in fact I'm already sharing my table with another lady? I think I'd stick to my old favorites.

Been to a ton of Chinese restaurants with my family, and I can honestly say this is one of the best places for Siew Yoke and roasted duck. Absolutely LOVED the dishes here. The fried fish, meat stuffed tofu, prawns and glass noodles, and the salted fish fried rice was so yummy!! This review would've been 5.0 if it weren't for the service. The food took awhile to come out, but that usually happens on Saturday nights and the restaurant is so packed. Make sure to make a reservation first!
Mel
A reliable and good Chinese restaurant on Village Avenue. The roasts are among our favourites (in particular the roast pork and roast duck) and service is generally fairly quick. It's also fairly friendly for a sit-down meal, although the service at the counter for take-away can be pretty abrupt! It can feel quite packed and squeezy on a busy night. On the whole, it makes for a good local Chinese restaurant.
Helloliu
Excellent roast duck and roast pork. Keep coming back for their the scollops fried rice too. They serve beautiful food here. Lunch special is good value. Keep it up👍

This is first time and my last time visit this restaurant! Yesterday we went there to take away a whole roast duck and when came home found out that one of duck's drumstick have flew away!!!!! Obviously you know what happened, they purposely keep one drumstick away and sell it to other customers !!! This restaurant is running the business in an untrustworthy, deceitful and insincere way !!! The food is not that delicious as claimed by other customers here too . Advised others not to be the next victim!!!
MF
Vermicelli with veg has no taste whatsoever, scallop with veg taste only a bit salty without any special sauce, mix roast, the crispy pork was okay, not crispy enough on top, and the chasiu is sweet enough but the pork was a bit smelly. Service is fast but no smile at all (typical HK), wont be bother to go back soon.
MO
Went there for lunch and also brought take away...roast duck. When we got home we realized there were couple pieces of roast duck missing. What the? Seriously, that is being dishonest.
Cocktails&Chocolate
Came here for a quick lunch on a Saturday. My partner got the Sliced Honey BBQ Pork with rice, which was rather bland and lacking in sauce for the amount of rice provided. I had the spicy salt and chilli pork with rice. Flavours were delicious, but it was a very cheap cut of meat (to be expected, given it was a cheap meal) however there were small bits of bone throughout it, which is bit off putting particularly when it has been fried.

As for the restaurant itself, the staff are very welcoming and lovely. My main issue was upon paying we were told minimum EFTPOS amount is $40. With no ATMs around, we had to pay a surcharge.

Something to keep in mind if you're planning on going here and you're not a local - we went on a Saturday and the place was fairly full, as were all the other places in the strip, so parking was at a premium. We didn't realise we had parked in a 30 minute spot and when we got back to our car, there were ticket inspectors booking cars. Fortunately, as mentioned it was a quick lunch so no issues for us but most of the other cars had tickets.
New owners, however the same chefs are still there which has kept the consistency, the owners have given it a good clean up and with young staff it's a lot easier to communicate without point at numbers on a menu.

1st time in my life i ordered takeaway (barbecue duck with rice) and they heated it up in microwave in front of me. I do have microwave at home so why did they need to heat it up if it was fresh? I have no idea.

Arrived for dinner at 6.30pm and there was no roast duck or their special whole chicken. Table configurations were poor and our tea cups were knocked over countless times because of poor spacing, no apologies from staff. Service was bad. Food was ok, nothing special. Very bad dining experience.

Not sure how this place got 3.8, paid reviews or maybe I got unlucky with the regular cook away sick? Got the combination rice, honey chicken and the sweet pork rice. The rice dishes were oily and bland (was impressed that they can botch a simple rice dish so completely). The honey chicken was passable (barely), but you get so little and its $18! Just drive to box hill if you want a decent Asian dining experience

Went here on Sunday lunch and had two of my favourite dishes:Beef Brisket Noodle soup and Hokkien Fried Rice. Absolutely loved it and my kids loved it too.
Their lunch specials menu is pretty good and much better than their dinner menu imho.
Anyway, my 4.5 rating is for my two favourite dishes and I'd rate them a little lower for dinner (can be pricey) and other dishes.

Extremely disappointed. The last time I ordered crispy roast pork, the meat was so fat laden that it was virtually inedible, though I was told that it was lean! I decided to give this place another chance since it is one of my local favourite places to eat. This time it was lean though the staff was a bit rude in his response. However, the second dish was the real disappointment. What happened to the usual authentic dish that I've come to expect for so many years??!! Some of the ingredients were replaced with cheap veges to bulk up the dish, like big chunks of onion and zuchini, the inedible hard parts of the lily buds and ear fungus were not removed. The dish tasted like a bad Chinese takeaway. Will not be back again, what a shame, the food quality used to be so good there.

UPDATE 21/08/2017
Almost the perfect Vegetarian Monday lunch .... if not for that Chinese Trilogy of Roast .... Rost Duck, BBQ Pork Belly and Crispy Pork Belly .... oh well, long live Carnivoran :-)

PREVIOUS
Another local favourite ..... always a joy to come back to.

It has been there for a long long time, nothing has change apart from some mini-renovations from time to time.

Low profile, but their food are unpretentious and genuine, just check out the Menu on the wall, yes some are in Chinese, just asks and they'll tell you what it is.

Wether be Lunch or Dinner, always consistent. Can't go pass their Roast Pork, Crispy or BBQ, all good, have them with egg noodles.

Service is better than okay, above average for a Chinese restaurant.

We have been here for couple of times.. either for take away or eat in.. Love their Roast Duck, BBQ Pork, Roast Pork, fried noodle with soya souce, fried fish also nice (first time tried), Tofu and Seafood in claypot.. Majority for the stir fry dishes are not too salty.. which is good.. The service and environment also good.. Prices can count as reasonable for the portion depend on what you order..

Lunches are considerably cheaper than dinners (evening meals average at $20-$25). Food is quite nice - we had the roast combo of siu naap (roast duck) and char siu (bbq pork), the dau miu (snow pea shoots) which was in season (not as "vegie-sweet" as usual - if that makes sense), but still tender and the combination hor fun. The combination had a decent combination of items - pork, calamari, prawns, chicken, choy sum - with a well seasoned, and not overly salty gravy/sauce. It was nice to see that the roast pork wasn't artificially coloured as well. Service was not that bad, and even appreciated my attempts at cantonese. $60 all up. Food was also served promptly, so not sure what the other reviews are referring to - off day maybe?
Daniel
Wasn't expecting much when we walked in but we left with a happy tummy. We ordered the double roast combination, claypot toufu with seafood as well as sweet and sour pork. The double roast combi of duck and pork belly was way better than The Hills (My usual supper joint) and the claypot toufu with seafood was good and it came with alot of seafood in it. Overall it was a good dinner and we enjoyed it.

If you want BBQ anywhere in east Melbourne, this is where you want to go. I've eaten there at least 10 times. They are always busy, and when you eat the food, you'll know why.

The staff is a bit surly, which is probably the only criticism I have about them. They'd get a 4.5 if they could sort that out.

Never been disappointed with the food though.
Bentheeater
Food is great. Duck on rice is superb. Service is typical of any Chinese restaurant but remember you get what you pay for. If you go there for dinner it's quite busy however service is still speedy and food still comes out fast.
Foodie101
Like the food, however really dislike the service and therefore would not recommend. Bbq pork and duck often run out and orders rarely ready on time.

Always come here for dinner. Love their lamb hot pot with lettuce, BBQ duck and chicken. Super Friendly service! Cannot expect more for this restaurant! Good value for money.

Loving it! My Second Home. Whenever I don't know where to go for dinner, I go to King Jade. It never disappoint me. The dishes are yummy, fast service. Loving it.

Great food and nice place. My friend and I popped into this place since we saw the ad for the fried flounder with 5 spices were like $10 or $15.00. We decided to order one of those flounders and a seafood claypot tofu. Price was reasonable and love it!
We overheard that one can order like $5.00 or $10.00 of crispy pork belly if you were to dine in. Usually most restaurants charged by 0.5kg or 1.0kg for crispy pork belly but this joint is rather flexible.
I'd definitely go back again for the food is great and prices are reasonable.
Food Critic
Food OK, service poor. We have often been to this reteraunt in the past. Food and service was always good. Tonight the food was ok only. The standards have slipped. Service was poor and staff were rude. we will not return for a long while. Needless to say, (unlike previous occasions) we did not leave a single cent as tips!
Belle
Sizzling beef. Received a great service tonight from the owner! He was really friendly and helpful the entire night! Food was delicious and my favourite dish to order is through sizzling black bean beef! Definitely a must try :)
JP
Love the 燒臘: We always went.... Love the 燒臘:
We always went there for the char siu and siu yuk, it's the delicious dish for our once a while BBQ food fix. Rather than driving to Pacific BBQ house, King's Jade it's the closest we opt to go.
We recently ordered Chicken and Yam cooked in coconut milk, it's amazing and had never had the dish before. However if they will replace with chicken fillets the dish would be a big bonus, make it easy to eat.
One thing, when I ordered over the phone with English it seemed the staffs doesn't really
Understand so I had to use Cantonese, which I haven't spoken for long. Luckily they understand.
If you want to order roasted duck, roasted pork or BBQ pork on Chinese New Year, it's better order beforehand, they get busy and those sold
Out fast.
Last but not least, Great restaurant!
Scomanda
After the atrocious service we received last weekend, despite the tasty food, we will no longer frequent this establishment. Previous experience here was passable, however as we sat there waiting for the highchair that never came and the cutlery that never appeared I made up my mind never to come back again.
J
The roast pork is our family favourite and so is the gai lan vegetables. The service isn't friendly at all and a few times they have actually been plain rude. The pork and duck still bring us back so if you don't mind eating on butchers paper and occasional rude dude service, try it out!
Dave
Nice duck, but appalling attitude and service

HK Style. We've 3 persons visited a relative in Melbourne earlier would like to try some HK style stuffs. Found this restaurant nearby our place, we've ordered roast duck, bbq pork, and a spicy flounder. The service is ok, luckily the waiter and waiteress speak cantonese! The prices were good, the dishes were tasty and fresh, close to HK standard.
Terrible service, rude waiters, was short changed. A friend and i went for dinner at this restaurant.it wasn't too crowded as we went about 7:15 pm and got a table easily.we ordered from their lunch menu paying one extra dollar each for the meal as we didn't want to share dishes.when we asked the middle aged waiter for the menu,he turned his nose up at us and rudely dumped the menu on the table.we just ignored him and ordered attributing his attitude to a busy night.the food was good and we did enjoy it.however, when my friend went to the bathroom, that waiter slammed the bill on the table.she was a bit longer than usual so one of the staff(a middle aged woman) asked me rudely when was I going to leave the restaurant.i told her that i was waiting for my friend and got a rude grunt in response.mind you it was only 8pm when this occured.i am totally disgusted with the service of this restaurant.to add insult to injury when we paid the bill, they shortchanged us.my friend told a younger lady worker what had occured so she gave us the difference.i am totally disgusted with the apalling service and being shortchanged.this is unacceptable and i will NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Julian Chua
Ordered BBQ pork, roast duck and a seafood tofu soup for dinner. Very satisfying. The waitress even gave us complimentary red bean soup as dessert.

Dinner. We only come for the fantastic food on offer ... the roast pork,. suckling pig and the roast ducks are just so yummy,

the service is not much to write home about but hey go with friends and family and enjoy the feast!

Definitely FREE of MSG & tasty food! Thank!!!. I have not come here for a while and earlier this year 2013 I have come back to buy their roast pork & roast duck for take away. Being very sensitive to MSG, I have found their food here to be MSG FREE; well - at least my body is NOT showing any signs of sensitivity at all !!!! So I came back for a sitting down lunch & have confirm I am all OK! I found their food to be mild (ie tend to be not salty) but still very tasty. My favourite is their BeiJing style pork ribs. So I brought my entire family back on the night of Labour Day 11th March 2013. They were very busy. We had Fried flat head fish/stirred fried garlic snow-pea shoots/beancurd pork belly claypot/ chicken egg gravy hor fun(white flat noodle)/steam rice for all/ beijing spare ribs+big kids still like the bananna fritter + deep fried i-cream/ chinese tea/BYO a couple of beers. total 6 people at around $20 each. We really really really really enjoy the food. This time I also like the fish & the snow-pea shoot vegetables especially but still recommend all 4 dishes. We live closer here so I definitely will come back again!!!!Thanks!

Rude, slow service. food about average. do not recommend going there.

Very Good for Price. I have a quick dinner or lunch at king jade on a regular basis.
It's a basic no fuss little restaurant with an emphasis on good food.
The crispy pork is always very good, with just the right amount of five spice.
Very consistent little restaurant which has been there a few years with a regular local clientelle.
Always busy and reasonably priced.
Highly recommended.
Mtmcgw
Great food with minimum decor, which means you are only paying for the food. Like salt and pepper flounder, seafood hot pot, fish cake with Chinese veggies, char hor fun and shredded pork and mushroom fried noodles.
Babaloogie
Worth the wait. Actually only came here after being told of a 45min wait at Papa Rich. Was pleasantly surprised with the food quality. All 4 dishes were really good. The Siew Yoke was super crispy and the duck was nice. The belly pork hot pot was yummm... as well as the Beancurd stuffed with prawn. Overall a good experience. :) The only qualm is getting a car park around the area.
Peter
Always great food, but avoid the Taro and Chicken Hot Pot. Not a favorite of mine
Bluecat
...enjoyed it... You will need to book ahead as they get real busy. The decor is the typical plain looking chinese restaurant.
Service was ok. We ordered the pork belly, sweet & sour pork, chop chop food - bbq pork, crispy pork...etc.
Portion size is quite decent for the price they charge. When it comes to taste, its not bad, very balanced.
It only costs us $80 for 5 adults & 2 kids. Will be back for more.

Went with a friend and had the fried flounder and the ma po tofu with rice and cut chilli. The dishes came promptly and I found the staff alright. All up $39 including redbean desert.

Yummo. King Jade has been around for ages, but the best dishes have got to be their duck and also the fried milk slices. If you don't like milk, like me, you will need to try this fried milk - it will surprise you!
Scottt
Family Favourite. King's Jade has been a family favourite for years and is consistently good. On our most recent visit we had 5 dishes and all were top quality. Highlights were the flounder and soya sauce chicken. And you know your money is paying solely for good food and not decor!
