The food was amazing, we had a variety of dishes and could not fault any of them. Service was great, friendly and efficient and our waitress happily explained the gluten free options available. Will definitely be boing back. A+ experience.
Service was fantastic, the food was lovely. Highly recommend the miso beef ramen!
Another amazing meal! We have never had a bad experience here. Today we had salmon sushi, Japanese pancake and, bento box. All of this for $55. So happy to have such a great restaurant in our local strip.
Parking is difficult if you come during peak hour, so be patient to roam for a while. Bookings for Tookaiya is highly recommended!

Review:
The quantity at Tookaiya is really generous. For the 4 people dining in, this whole place cost us about ~$30pp and left us feeling incredibly full. Really happy about this.
The food was really great as well. Wafu steak didn't have a rice accompaniment, so we decided to go with the Katsu Don. There was just enough rice (which was a lot) to share around. Flavourful and really easy to eat.
My personal favourite is the sashimi! Really fresh pieces of fish.
I would avoid the Kaisen Tori Ball. Not as wow as the other dishes - it felt more like a big fishball and the sweet chilli sauce only seemed like an afterthought.
All in all, really good experience at Tookaiya for family and friends. Booking is highly encouraged - they managed to squeeze us in when we came though 😊.
Cosy little japanese eatery on keilor road. Loved the good variety on the menu and the tuna tataki was a favourite. Popular amongst the locals
Came here to try when catching up with my friend. It wasn’t as busy as I expected for a Friday afternoon so was able to get a table very easily. We ordered the teriyaki bento boxes which was quite delicious! Saw next to someone who had sashimi which gave us major food envy!! Will be back to try other dishes!
The staff were very lovely and accommodating which made most of my experience. The sushi was a bit dry unfortunately but the tempura was great. My ramen looked quite nice when I got it but it was clear the ramen were cooked for too long as they almost became mushy which was certainly unpleasant. However the vegetables and beef were amazing and tasted great :)
Our favourite Japanese place in Melbourne. Food is fresh and tasty and staff are wonderful. Never had an issue with food other than it’s too yummy that we order so many dishes because we can’t get enough! Highly recommend!
I would like to say Merry Christmas to the staff of Tookaiya and especially to Carol for looking after us over the years. You have a fabulous restaurant. The food is consistently great and the service fantastic. Even to seeing the menus and chairs getting wiped down at the end of the night. Where do you see that these days?
Good local Japanese restaurant. Food is always fresh and service is reliable. The decor is very nice although the tables are probably a little too close together. But you can't fault the food. They do take away too which is equally as delicious. Bookings are recommended.
Showed up for early dinner with young family of 4. Knocked back for not having a reservation. We explained that we have been trying to call on multiple occasions. Staff informed us that they have been intentionally not answering their phone. They could have saved us a trip if they only answered their phone!
Was pleasantly surprised to find a place like this secluded from everything. The sakura salmon roll was amazing and creamy that it melts in your mouth. Everything else was also very satisfying; definitely would recommend for westside japanese spot.
Pretty fast and affordable take away Japanese food in Essendon. The sashimi was fresh and delicious. The teriyaki chicken was a little bland so I topped with chilli power and it enhanced the flavour. Staff were decent and efficient with phone take away order. Would recommend this place.
Lovely restaurant Staff really helpful. Prices a nice surprise. Easy to get to on Keilor Road
Been going here for what seems forever and never disappointed. Last visit was before lockdown and still greeted me like it was only last week. As always food was delicious, fresh and on point.
First time eating at a Japanese restaurant. Came here upon recommendation as I was contemplating another Japanese restaurant. It was good, wouldn’t say amazing. I had the Tori Don which tasted bland (not much taste to it) I tried adding soy sauce to get some additional flavour. When it says it comes with vegetables - it is just zucchini with a half slice of tomato. I assumed there’d at least be some carrot included. I’m told the Curry Tori Don was fine and the yakisoba noodles with vegies was delicious. Avocado maki mini rolls were ordered, they truly are mini.
A cute touch that you’re given mini chocolates (kisses) at the end when paying the bill.
Great sashimi! Shared a few dishes and all were good. Service was great and chocolate mousse for desert was perfect.
