Review Jimmy Grants - Fitzroy

Jp Santos
An awesome choice. There's a lot of seating available and plenty of food options inspired on Greek food. Our choice: Eat Like a Greek (2 people).

Jimmy Grants offers a twist on the Ye olde souvlaki! Incorporating a bit of tradition, with including the chips inside, and serving up something different, like the American, made with beef ribs. It was oozing with flavour, to the point where I didn't want it to end. Great atmosphere with bubbly staff, great casual place for a quick bite.

Nice and cozy place to go eat. The two Staff girls at the counter are very kind . I Usually order the lamb sandwich but today the fries weren’t that freshly cooked. A bit disappointed with the quality this time .

This is the best greek street food I’ve tried in melbourne! very clean and so yummy!!! I loved the nonna maria (chicken wrap) and their chips with feta cheese is to die for!
Michael Lee
Good value for money, food came out quickly and of high standard Had the beef and lamb mix, very tender and well seasoned, the bread is actually the highlight
Gregoire Zimmermann
Really good chicken and lamb souvlaki. Quick service. Defenitely recommend for lunch.
Teck Yap
yo-chi frozen yogurt for the night! great for digestion :)

Delicious, well priced, and unique souvlaki. The chips are quite simply amazing, some of the best I've ever eaten, but you have to eat them there; they are nowhere near as good if you take away. The grain salad is fantastic and I'm not usually a salad eater

Best kebab or Souvlaki in Australia, left feeling light and fantastic. Love the Nona Maria and grain salad my girlfriend got the Poseidon and she loved it. If I lived in Fitzroy I would be here twenty four seven. Enjoy
Dimmi Mavroulis
Amazing food , always so fresh and delicious. Jimmy grants have the best chips in melbourne. My favourite souvlaki at the moment is the Poseidon.
Parul Aggarwal
Good flavours. Veg souvlaki could be better
Andrea
We called in as we had heard the name a bit...<br/>Cool funky side street cafe, but not a comfy sit down vibe. More of a eat quick and leave. <br/>Souva was delish but small, $15.00 is not cheap. Was yummy but not rushing back for the price.
VinChan
Felt like eating a good souvlaki last week and decided to go to our usual place (Jimmy grants). It was very quiet on Wednesday evening when we dined in. <br/>Both the souvlakia tasted great - good amount of sauces in them. The fries were a bit too salty for my partner’s liking. I enjoyed the Taramosalata dip.. <br/>Overall, consistently yummy tasting souvlakis at this place..
Foood4Dayzzz
Absolutely to die for. In a back street of Fitzroy, this place beats all other Souvlaki's. A Greek restaurant inspired by George Columbarus is nothing short of sensational. I can't go past the Nonna Maria.
Foooodylicious
Jimmy Grants is a great restaurant. My favourite meal is the souvlaki. I think Jimmy Grants is one of the only restaurant that has Traditional Greek souvlaki as a meal.

Overall score: 18/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>in 5 words: the perfect souvlaki in town <br/>*<br/>Taste ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - i have tried the nonna Maria (chicken) and bonegilla (chicken and lamb). Both souvs combine well-fried chips, tender and delicious marinated meat and mustard aioli. You don’t feel too thirsty by the end of the meal but you are certainly satisfied. Something about the crunch of the fries and meat combo in a wrap - perfect!
*<br/>Ambience ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Beautiful design. Clean and ample seating places. <br/>*<br/>Price ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - i thought the souv was very value for money and well within most work lunch budgets - ranging between $10-$15
*<br/>Presentation ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - it’s not too messy to eat the souv because of the way it is wrapped. Something I appreciate if I’m having it in office!
*<br/>Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - even when it’s peak lunch hour, service is fast, efficient and friendly. They really yell your name - everyone knows joanne ordered a souv 😂

I've been coming here for lunch with my wife and 5 kids for many years. The food is amazing (and it usually costs under or about $100 to feed the whole family), but the highlight is the service. All staff have been fantastic, but in particular, Alex has been exceptional. Alex remembers us and calls us by our names, which we love and automatically feel like part of the 'Jimmy Grant's family'. The place is always clean and has a really relaxed and cool atmosphere. We love coming here...our family always feels welcome and happy.<br/>Thanks Alex, and the rest of the team.<br/>Overall, a really good place to go out to eat in a place that has awesome food, affordable prices, and is family-friendly.

I revisited this chain with my cousin who is a big fan of this chain. There was a little line up and we were quite suprised to find out they were also promoting the yo chi desserts for free so that was a nice suprise and so delicious too.

Love it when you get fresh food done really well. We joined friends for takeaway from Jimmy Grants and selected 3 meats, 2 salads, pita, dips and chips. Good food you can’t go wrong.
Jase
Small portions and not cheap. Decent food though. Why does my review need to be 140 characters ? I’m not a food critic. It was poor value is my point.

Jimmy grants in Fitzroy. Nice Greek style souvlaki restaurant serving nice traditional Greek food. I love the white and blue decorations. Genuine feel like you back to Greece. The signature Mr Papadopoulos lamb souvlaki is a must try. Nice and juicy.
Leila
I really enjoyed the lamb and chicken souva! Service was quick too. This being my first ever time at Jimmy Grants, I do have a strange complaint though (or more like a suggestion): maybe change the door? It was confusing trying to get in and out of the place.
Danny Nguyen
Came here on a Saturday morning and loved it. The Americano souvlaki was simple but delicious. My partner had a vego souvlaki and she loved it as well. Staff was friendly and prices were fair. Will be coming back!

Johnny, our waiter / bar man / cleaner / Uber Eats order clerk, looked dead behind the eyes. An observer would think he didn’t care about our patronage, but he did. It’s just that Johnny had seen some stuff.<br/>Queue the flickering old film in sepia:<br/>Johnny asking for his back pay. Hands over his head, cowering in the corner, some short bald guy shouting at him.<br/>Walking home in the dark, he keeps seeing a man with a cravat out of the corner of his eye. <br/>Boom! A punch to the stomach. Where did that come from? It’s Gary this time. “I didn’t like having to do that Johnny . . . (really long pause) . . . I LOVED doing that!”<br/>Johnny limps back to the ghetto, his sickly grandmother in a bed. <br/>“Yaya, you must eat. You need strength. I had to steal food from work. They don’t pay me.” She takes one small, frail bite and flings it across the room. <br/>“What is this soggy pita stuffed with stodgy sweaty lamb? It tastes like it was cooked at the RSL bain-marie and not on a rotisserie. Where is the garlic? Where is the flavour?”<br/>“Yaya, I have brought shame upon our family. All I wanted, was to work at the finest souvlaki joint in town and this Jimmy Grants came up in the search results”<br/>“Oh my simple little Johnny. Did you fall for one of those PR jobs from Urban List or Broadsheet?”<br/>“I did Yaya! (crying) I did”<br/><br/>“Hello . . . hello. Can I order”
Najjar43
Feta chips are soooo good! 😍 I had “the bonegilla”- gluten free bread. It was really nice and fresh although I felt that if I just even had a slight bit of fresh veg, slice of tomato or lettuce it would’ve been just right. Overall good place for a quick bite to eat!
Virgil
I love this place! I love the service. Love the Mr Papadoupolos! The bread is soft and fresh! The meat is soft and juicy and falls apart! The chips are on point every time. It's such a cheap eat as well! Highly recommend!
Katie Hawker
We waited over an hour for our food. The staff were very unhelpful and did not answer their phone when attempting to call the restaurant - the line disconnects after waiting on hold for two minutes.
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:<br/>+ Nona Maria (chicken kebab)<br/>+ Full chips<br/><br/>Whenever we long for some kebab, Jimmy Grant’s always comes to mind. The original store in Fitzroy is where we would head to. The nona maria is succulent, the inclusion of the chips in it gives it a bit of crunchy texture and the mayonnaise binds everything together. Delicious. The chips are always great, and the use of feta for that kick of salt is great. We always have a serve of the Greek salad also to help freshen the palate and a lemonade to wash it down. Will be back for sure.
Madeleine Kendrick
Friendly service, tasty and fresh food that doesn't leave you feeling 'heavy', and a wonderful variety of greek flavours that pique your curiosity. We ordered a variety share platter between the two of us. The meat was well flavoured, so it was delicious even on its own. If not for the recommendation of a friend I might not have gone - but I'm glad we did!
Av
Don’t bother. Paid for two large nona Maria take away at around 9pm, when we got home we realised they were both the smaller versions. Very light on the meat. Feel ripped off :( for the near $35 dollars we spent.
Hangry Horace
It was fairly quiet when I came here for lunch. I ordered the nonna maria and was pleasantly surprised. The chicken was nicely charred and the fries were piping hot and crispy. The portion was also very generous which made the it pretty reasonable for the price. Service was friendly and efficient.
Iris Myandowski
You could get a cheaper, garlicky version quite honestly anywhere. Every few metres up and down Smith St and elsewhere. But then again I didn't hate it.
Armin Muminovic
Always a favourite of mine to go to. The Americano is by far the best souva on the menu. If you’re feeling a little more hungry then usual, go for the almighty. You definitely won’t regret it.
Amit Tuteja
I remember when this place started a few years ago, it was buzzing with atmosphere and great vibes. There was staff bustling around with energy and offering yummy Greek souvlaki. There would be a que of people wanting to get in. Well my recent visit was totally different. There was one staff who was taking the order as well as cooking it (perhaps warming the food). We ordered a platter for two with lamb shoulder, grain salad, tzatziki dip, chips and bread. For $40 it wasn’t a cheap meal. What I got was tough meat, stale salad and over salted chips. Nah!! I won’t be back.
Tony___
Ordered a mr papadopoulos. <br/>Food was very basic and portion was stingy considering how much they charged. <br/>Definitely won't go back or recommend to anyone......<br/>don't fall for the marketing! <br/><br/>
DamoForce Food
Decided to try some jimmy, not too bad. The Meats do taste good. though overall is pricy pricey and the wraps are on the smaller side of things.
Yasmin Isabelle
Terrible! Got a chicken souvlaki and it was just dried up chicken and chips along with mustard in a wrap. No effort in it, just put together and tasted disgusting! Not an inviting place either, small empty and a little creepy at night. Wouldn't recommend
Bopnbeep
The most poorly run restaurant I have been to in Melbourne - we must have caught them on a very bad day. It was day 1 of their birthday week specials and they had 1 guy cooking and 1 lady taking orders, serving, cleaning tables etc. Every table was piled with dirty plates yet to be cleared from lunch and there was a queue of uber drivers waiting for orders. I felt sorry for the 2 staff working on this day as there were also workplace inspectors there while we were waiting for lunch. A customer ended up clearing some of the tables for the poor lady who was trying to keep up with orders, she didn't even eat as there was too long a wait for food. There was a smashed glass bottle of juice on the floor which hadn't been cleaned up. It was an absolute shambles. The food itself was alright, we had the Nonna Maria's and chips. The Nonna Maria's were missing the parsley and the chicken was quite bland. I can't imagine it's like this everyday but this experience alone would put me off from ever coming back.

It’s quite possible I have been a little too harsh on Jimmy<br/>Grants in the past as I have been hung up on them trying to mess around with a tried<br/>and true formula of fatty lamb and garlic. Why change something that works unless<br/>its a change for the better. Their “just off smith street” store has a really<br/>interesting interior and is quite small but has a cozy feel. I ordered the Bonegilla<br/>(mixed Chicken and Lamb) in original size. This is my standard order at most<br/>giro, souva establishments. I don’t mind the mustard as such but still prefer<br/>an original garlic hit to the mustard aioli hit if I am honest. I don’t mind<br/>the inclusion of chips but I’d argue more meat would be had without them… more<br/>meat makes me happy. Food is generally less fatty than most which may appeal<br/>more to some. In summary good food done relatively consistently and slightly<br/>different than Greek of old.
Shaun Rees
Good food but overpriced. $40 for 2 souva's, 2 serves of chips and 2 waters. Standard size is more like a half size, get the big souva for the few extra dollars
Jordan
I'm always happy here even if if the size of the serves seems a bit small. But at least there's no crappy gristle and fat like other places. Chips are pretty good as well. I feel the music is a bit load so can hard to have a chat with my mates.
Daniel
It was good but that's about it really.Skimpy on the meat and a little awkward to get a comfy spot to sit.plenty of better souvlaki joints out there to eat from.gave it a shot but won't be back
Tamara Brennan
Before I went vegan I used to love this place. Chips in a souva are the best. Always had excellent staff with consistently fresh and delicious food.
Lisa Nguyen
Went here for my first Greek cuisine experience and I was very disappointed. Ordered the Bonegilla with chips. The meat was not off the spit and rather than having tzatziki, mustard aioli was substituted which was quite strong and didn't compliment the souvlaki. The meat was not very flavoursome however was tender. The pita was quite doughy. The chips were great, nice crunch and paired well with oregano and feta and was probably the only thing I enjoyed. Not a bad layout, had a cosy and casual feel. Customer service was great, just wish the food had matched it.
Dale Zeinheiger Culpin
Visited Jimmy's plenty of times! Always pretty decent and just a good casual laid back place. My order just about always remains the same. A Bonegilla, chips and some Jimmy's Dimmy's with a organic cola. Something about that combo just works. But I've had just about everything on their menu and it's all pretty decent. Chips are the crunchiest going too.

Lunch time mid week. Could not believe how busy a place this was!<br/>A constant stream of customers in the hour or so we were there - both sit down and takeaways. Very efficient service.<br/>We shared the "Eat like a Greek" and rate it as a generous dish in flavour, quality and quantity. Great value for money.<br/>Washed down with a couple of Mythos it was a memorable meal.<br/>Only negative is the very restricted seating space.  More practical - not made for comfort.

I Goodon'ya Georgey, I didn't think that your souva's would live up to their expectations but I drove a fair trip today to give it a try and after having a mixed chicken/lamb large one it was unreal so I had another one. The only thing you need in your stores is for hot fresh chillies as Siracha that's sweet and not nice but with jalapeños or those garden red chillies (you know which ones) chopped up inside would be great (yes as an option only). Great concept, funky decor with memorabilia, cosy and quality driven👍
George
Very disappointing waiting 20 minutes to receive a 3/4 filled salad. Unfortunately the full price I paid doesn't reflect the amount of food received.
Beau James
Have had both the Mr Papadopoulos and the Nonna Maria, both are decent but honestly not the best souva's I've had. That being said I will go there and would definitely select it above others around here too!
Frog
Yum delicious yum. Souva, chips, salad - all great only problem is getting a seat!! If only all chips were this good.... imagine if a pub had these chips... I would never leave !
Valerie Mc Cormack
ordered Eat like a Greek from Richmond cost 45 including delivery charge ... Disgusting food ... cold, small portions .. lamb over cooked was like eating rubber ... don't eat here ...
Foodieforever
A great place for a quick bite! The nonna maria is delicious and the meat is tender which melts in your mouth (no burnt bits!). The souva is a small portion compared to your local souva places however the flavor and the bread is worth it. The grain salad is a nice addition to the palate along with the jimmy's dimmy's.

LIT!: the original sized souvalakis are really filling. I've tried the Mr Papadopolous and the bonegilla. I love how they include the chips inside the souvalaki and it still has some crunchy bits despite being soaked in flavourful sauce. <br/><br/>NOT SO LIT: don't make the mistake of wearing white clothes...

Ordered Jimmy Grants on Uber Eats on a Fri night after seeing all that heavy advertising by George Calombaris on TV. It was quick and efficient. We had Mr Papadopoulos and Nonna Maria. They were absolutely yum without a doubt! However the size of the roll was tiny, we were so disappointed! I understand that if you're eating in, you will look around and know to order an "almighty" size but we didn't have that option so we just went with the regular size. Felt a bit cheated when I compare it to souvlakis in the city that are huge and filling.
KnowingMelbourne
I loved this place when it first opened and it's stayed pretty consistent. I've only eaten in so I can't comment on the uber eats (and equivalent) services. The fresh, simple ingredients make these things delicious and the chips inside and the amazing fluffy pita take them to the next level. If you haven't tried them do it!
IslaJ
The meat from the spit was great as were the chips and Greek salad was so tasty, the grain salad unfortunately which is our favourite was undercooked/slight hard or underdressed I'm not sure.<br/>Also the music was put up at one stage and was too loud and the bathrooms needed a once over. <br/>Would definitely still go back though, just thought management should know. <br/>Thanks
Leena
Jimmy Grants has some healthy tasty salad and drinks. I've ordered the main size take away beetroot salad. The quantity serve at Smith street is the same as small size beet salad, eat in of Jimmy Grants at Church Street. My boy had full tummy with main size bonegilla:)
RoamingEats
Really above average, but that's it. You pay a few dollars more compared to a standard kebab but be prepared to wait for seating during peak dinner times. We managed to get a table right at the back, could see the kitchen working hard pushing out Deliveroo orders too. Food came promptly and was definitely not bad but didn't have that satisfactory kebab feeling. Of course I'd go again sometime in the future because it's fresh and has that Celebrity backing. I would recommend getting a beer instead though, my aperol spritz tasted 'home-made' if you know what I mean.
Andrew
We ate here last night after reading all the good reviews. Hmmm, honestly, Mr Papadopoulos (lamb souva) was dry, and just ok for my liking. There was also something definitely not right about the negroni (cocktail), too strong and missing something.
GET•IN•MY•BELLY
I find the emporium shop out does the Fitzroy one as they load up the souvas with more sauce. Sometimes I find the Fitzroy shop ones to dry but saying that they are still the best souvas in town.
Rebeccaomalley91
Food was delicious although very over priced. We ordered the 'eat like a greek' for $40 which promised enough food for two. The portion was minimal and we were left hungry. The deep fried saganaki 'soldiers' were hollow, containing little to no cheese. Very disappointing - $12 for three hollow sticks of breadcrumbs.

Kebab kebab kebabsss! I encountered this lovely kebab place when I went to Messina and boy I am glad I did. It is about a minute walk from Messina in Fitzroy. The chicken and lamb kebab was my favourite their kebabs are beautifully cooked. Customer service was awesome and friendly even when the place is so packed with customers. Awesome place to hang out if you are looking for a quick bite!
Wonderinginmelbourne
Had a Nonna Maria with chips. Really liked the sauce in the souvlaki. The chips were really good. Place is small, glad we opted for our food to go! Would come back. I think next time I will try 'the patris' as many places offer great chicken souvlaki and it would be nice to try a seafood one!
AnotherAsianAbroad
Came here for catch up with an old friend. Wanted something cheap and cheerful we decided to try out Jimmy Grants after the many positive reviews on Zomato.<br/><br/>It was easy and quick to order by the counter. I got the Mediterranean salad with lamb and the grain salad and my friend the souvlaki. Food came out quick and it tasted delicious !! The lamb was so flavoursome and tender and the grain salad was very fresh and filling. My friend said his souvlaki was really good too!<br/><br/>Definitely coming back here when I'm wanting a quick Greek bite
NNNBBB
Girl on the counter tonight very unkind attitude. We said it was our first time there she was very unhelpful. The girl on the floor was welcoming and kind.
Ravin
Wrong order and burnt chips. <br/>After many stuff ups with their Uber orders - now issues with takeaway also. <br/>Tasty food poorly executed. When you get the wrong order the food doesn't taste as great. <br/>I don't know how they could pass off the burnt chips as quality food.
Zachary Fisher
Food is ok. I deducted 4 points because George Calombaris steals from his employees. He keeps saying that it was a mistake but $2.6 million is a lot of money and I don't believe him.
JE
Very yummy food, TERRIBLE value for money. <br/>They used to have a $15 lunch special (souva, chips and drink), but they've gotten rid of it :(<br/>Now, if you ordered those items individually, you'd be paying upwards of $22, $23 bucks. Terrible value. I'll admit the food is delicious, but the (non carb/chip) portions are TINY (as others have noted). Bring back the lunch special and all will be forgiven!
The Frugal Cats
Loved the lamb souva!! The lamb was so tender that it could almost melt in your mouth. It was by far the best dish out of everything we ordered on the night. We also got the chicken with tsatsiki and greek salad and chips to share. The chicken was beautifully cooked and the dip was really tasty. Service was prompt, friendly and attentive despite the place being so busy. For dessert, we tried the baklava flavoured choc top. While we didn't mind it, we would probably not order it again. We will definitely be back for the lamb souva :3
Ching
Cool decoration and lovely staff. We came as a group of 4 as we heard that this place has one of the best yiros in Melbourne. Being a vegetarian, a yiros eatery is really not a great choice so I wasn't expecting anything fantastic but I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the vegetarian yiros was (it's called the Homer). The falafels were crunchy and absolutely delicious. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy their lamb / chicken yiros. Overall a good experience!
Food808
Jimmy, you've done it again. Hanging for a souva one day, just knew this place would suffice.<br/>Staff are awesome, quick to take your order and work well under the pump. Jimmy's Dimmys 👌
Brady Jan
Ordered through Uber eats, the food was ok, the saganaki was tiny, the salad was tiny & found the portions were very small considering the price we paid.
Michelle Lausen
Generic Greek food served by hipsters with no concept of service.<br/><br/>Wrong meal served, plastic wrap found in food and survey requested during the meal!<br/><br/>Many other options for Greek food in a city boasting a proud Greek heritage.
David Food Leasing
DO: The souvas, any of them. But my fav was the Bongella which essentially was a mixed souva of lamb and chicken. Or the Eat Like a Greek special. <br/><br/>DON'T: Forget the amazing desserts to finish. <br/><br/>TIP: Ask for extra garlic aioli mustard thing on the side. It's sooooo good.
Priyanka Arora
I rushedddd to this place which was on my 'To-Eat' list for Melbourne. It was almost closing time but I made it. Ordered the chicken souvlaki because only that was available. Next day I went back AGAIN for lamb souvlaki and man, I was in heaven. <br/><br/>That bread first of all, very traditional Greek pita and is a bit thicker than khoubuz. It also has a little fluff to it. Next comes the amazing lamb, nothing over powering, just good flavor of lamb coming through. This souva is stuffed with French fries (always a good idea!) and then comes the star - the mustard aioli. It is mayo mixed with whole grain mustard and bit of garlic and that's the thing I absolutely loooove in my souva. <br/><br/>I'd go back to Melbourne to just eat this 🙄🤗 <br/>PS: this souva is called Mr papadopolous 😂
Nick Komo
I think food here is great. A little modern twist but still feels like im in kalamata eating 😊<br/>I usually go non busy hours so i can enjoy my souvlaki and greek beer slowly and with no issues finding a seat 😉
Ross McCallum
Nothing better than expecting slow roasted lamb and chicken on the spit on 'plate me up' <br/>And then to receive lamb and the other grey meat also known as chicken. Even the server could not distinguish what was what. Add this to the fact there is enough oil on the paper to pollute a small water way. <br/>Greek may be greek. But at least mention it in the menu that the chips will be feta covered. <br/>Lettuce on the salad was brown, soggy and wilted and beyond a few days old as it was discoloured around the edges <br/>I have scored this as a 1.5 as the organic lemon, like and bitters and lemonade was nice <br/>Thank god hunky dory was next door.
Penguineats
We started off with Mr Papadopoulos, which is the more traditional lamb souvlaki. Wrapped within the toasted pita was an abundance of succulent, charred lamb that provided plenty of flavour. The mustard aioli was pleasant and complimentary without being overpowering, with the chips soaking up the juices beautifully.<br/> <br/>It was overall an enjoyable souva. However, given the size, not sure if it’s really worth that price tag. Souvas are supposed to be a cheap staple!
Simon
I thought this place was great. We dropped in for a quick lunch to be greeted at the door and shown to a seat by a man who was all smiles. Our lamb souvlakis were lovely and tender and just the right size. Slow roasted shoulder of lamb in a light fluffy wrap. For $12.50 each it is in a class of its own. I have been a fan of Hellenic republic for quite some time because this man really understands his food. Service was good and I like the purpose-build run down décore. Feel like a hipster for 30 minutes by going there.
Mo LI
The papadopoulos tastes better than my expectation, and the lamb roasted perfectly! Enjoyed each bites. The hand cream in toilet is not cream, but hand wash as well. Don't pump it if you wouldn't like to wash second time.
Annie Nguyen
We ordered the lamb souva and chicken souva. Although they were smaller than expected, they sure were tasty! The lamb in my opinion was slightly better than the chicken but my partner and I basically inhaled our souvas and had to resist the urge for seconds!
Angela Eats
The lamb was cooked to perfection! I didn't think I'll enjoy the fries in the wrap but it was actually pretty nice! For what you get, it's quiet pricey though
Eggcelent Eatventures
The original jimmys! Great souvlaki... although recently I have noticed a change in their mustard sauce.... not as good as it used to be, but all in all it's a great souvlaki with good quality ingredients! The beetroot salad is 👌
Tomas
I'm usually the last person to go to chain stores, especially for lunch though there will always be a special place in my stomach for Jimmy Grant's great food. Being vegetarian I was really happy to discover that their falafel tastes so good and the Hellenic slaw they use in it is so tasty. I also really like the nice warm bread they use to wrap it. To mix it up once in a while I also get the grain salad which tastes amazing and is super filling. The feta and herb chips are something magical! Feta makes everything great. <br/><br/>Jimmy Grants off Smith st (the 1st one!) is not too big but the staff are friendly and pump out the orders so you are never waiting too long and it's great having the food prepared fresh for every order. I usually get take away but on the times I have stayed there I find the atmosphere buzzing and always a good tune on the speakers. Staff are friendly and get the job done efficiently. This is still my favorite store of the various pop-ups and stores now around Melbourne.

Ahead of a vegetarian dinner, I made sure to preload in some meat in at Jimmy Grants and was thoroughly impressed by the experience. I did hold some high hopes given my previous positive experiences at Gazi, and those were met at this venue too. I went with the Med diet ($16.50) with lamb and a choice of side salad. The choice of the beet salad consisted of roasted beetroot, lemon, tahini yoghurt and smoked almonds. Service was fast and friendly and I was most definitely excited as I feasted my eyes on what arrived on the counter.

This place is definately Greek eatery meets hippster Fitzroy. The layout is pretty small, but really funky & hip. The souvlakis are really nice, I love the traditional chips being added to them. The chicken in my opinion is definately nicer than the lamb. They also have a good greek beer (Mythos) and apple cider there to buy as well.
Paige
I love their souvlaki. When I first saw them they looked small and I was disappointed- but they're so densely packed that they've never failed to satisfy my hunger! One word for them: yummy. Would definitely recommend, especially if you're on your way somewhere and need something to eat on-the-go. I hit it up before concerts!
Food Traveller
Finally a place that has brought my<br/>Love for souvlaki back! Such good quality, love the tenderness of the meat and there side chips. if you're looking to jump back onto the soave bandwagon give this place a go.

Perfect place for a feast! Came here after futsal to have dinner with a group of friends and walked out having a food coma. Delicious Greek food with generous servings ! Highly recommend!

Ordered the Med Diet off UberEATS. Arrived a little earlier than predicted which was a good start. Unfortunately when I opened my goodies all I saw was a tiny piece of chicken and a lot of salad and a tzatziki dip. While it all tasted great, I was really disappointed as it really needed more chicken. I was still hungry afterwards and ended up having to make myself a double ham and cheese toastie! And for $16.50 it REALLY needed more chicken. Seriously.
Saza_Lives_To_Eat
Was looking forward to trying this. Ordered the mr pap, very disappointing even before I opened the souvlaki. So small for $12.50. This is not even close to being good! It's very heavy, the mustard aoli is sort of sweet. Greasy chips. The lamb was nice but it desperately needed salad, lettuce anything green other than the one piece of parsley that was in it. I can't watch Master Chef ever again without remembering the disappointment.
Tom
I ordered the lamb souvlaki (mr papadopoulos). I honestly don't understand how this place is so highly rated. The whole souvlaki felt really bland. The sauce game was weak. They might be good at other dishes but if you're looking to have a good souvlaki. This is not the place.
Emily Morris
Apparently eating like a greek means eating sweet eff all. The two person meal option comes with single serve sizes of salad and one pita, no greek I know would consider that an acceptable portion size. Nil bang for buck.
EatMeMelbourne
In a word - delicious. Definitely the best and most authentic greek snack food outside of Greece. Love the grain salad. The service is minimal but not really missed. Give me my souvlaki and I have no further need for you anyway.

Not the biggest or cheapest souvlaki around, but certainly one of the tastiest I've had. The beef and the chicken were great, the sauce was tasty but the pita bread really made it, with the perfect texture.<br/><br/>The fries with feta are also great. I'll be back!

While I like this chain, this particular restaurant was not as good as I was expecting. The restaurant is very small and there is barely any seating. The largest table is a large communal bench which seats 10 if you really cram in. The other seats are bench or some small tables with stools around. While these tables would be okay for coffee, there is simply not enough room to put plates on them. Staff are very unhelpful and are too busy with the constant stream of takeaway orders to pay attention to diners.<br/><br/>Ordered the Eat Like A Greek which I have previously had. It is quite big and easily shared between 3. Overall the plate was delicious. We ordered the Lamb which was flavoursome and tender, the tzatziki which was light and the dill was nice in it and the grain salad which was great as always.

Grabbed a quick takeaway falafel souvlaki, a little dry, disappointing they won't take phone orders as it would make things much more efficient!

Look, I'm under no illusions that Jimmy Grant's is in any way authentically Greek, and I should know by now that any falafel that doesn't come from either Mankoushe or my grandmother's kitchen has a 99 per cent chance of being rubbish, but I succumbed the to novelty of the vegan option (hommus replacing yoghurt) on offer. QUELLE SURPRISE: it sucked. <br/><br/>Well, maybe saying it sucked is a bit too harsh, as there was nothing distinctively bad about it, it was just boring and bland. I am positive that both the falafel and hommus used were commercially produced (I've actually had packaged falafel from Piedimonte's that tasted far superior to whatever Jimmy Grant's uses) and contained no detectable traces of garlic, which is a mortal sin as far as kebabs go. On the plus side, the bread was fresh and the Greek slaw was faultless. The kebab in its entirety was edible. Unlike the chips.<br/><br/>It's already been established that I'm not a huge fan of chips, but these were exceptionally bad. By the time I opened the box, the chips were cold and rock hard. The only thing worse than something that's been fried going soggy is something that's been fried turning into cement, rendering it completely impossible to chomp through without breaking a tooth. Little pieces of cement that were undersalted and tossed with stale dried oregano, which served to give the cement a nice coating of twiggy debris. Straight in the bin with that.<br/><br/>The worst part of all this is that I can't even use being drunk as an excuse (as is the case with all my other forays into the world of questionable kebabs.) Serves me right for ignoring my better judgement. <br/><br/>In all seriousness, it's not that hard to make a vegan kebab without resorting to premade falafel. Or even make fresh falafel. I know this place is a franchise, but at least make your falafel mix in bulk offsite and fry it fresh to order at the outlets. It's not rocket science. I can't even say I'm disappointed, as I didn't have high hopes for Jimmy Grant's in the first place, but the experience really was quite bad. I hope that their omnivorous offerings are less dire than what I was subjected to.

JimmyGrants celebrating Immigrants.<br/><br/>The souvas here are really delicious and surprisingly filling. If you haven't tried eating here before I would say that the Mr. Pap is the way to go. <br/><br/>The Jimmy Dimmys are surprisingly quite well done. I would of liked them to be a bit more juicy on the inside as well thought.<br/><br/>If you haven't been to Hellenic Republic before I would say try the Grain Salad or the Rice Pudding here. <br/><br/>Come and give it a go to the many branches around Melbourne :]
Steph
Tasty affordable gourmet Greek food! The lamb is my favourite, get it every single time. And the donuts are to die for! The staff are super friendly and helpful, will always be honest with you and tell you if you're ordering more than needed.
A Girl With Curves
This place was just fabulous! The food was absolutely amazing!!! I had the slow cooked lamb souvlaki, grain salad and chips with feta and love love loved it! Can't wait to go back! <br/>The 1 point loss is solely for the seating. I understand it's relaxed dining but we had to put our drinks on the floor because the table was just too small. We will be back!
Jules
First time trying jimmy grants, I ordered the nonna Maria with a side of chips & fetta. <br/>The wrap was delicious, very subtle flavour but that's what made it. Such a well presented meal with incredibly friendly staff, the woman working was even kind enough to offer us some hommus and tzatziki. <br/>The only negative I could find was that the wrap could of been a couple inches bigger. The prices were very generous also. <br/>Cheers
Sarahannierule
Great souvlaki! Really reminds me of living in Greece! Love the bonegila souvlaki! Would like to see more choices for souvlakis on the menu. Definitely my go to place there is always friendly service :)
Caz
I love this place!! Yummo 🌯 those chips with feta are to die for!! The staff are so friendly & always a great vibe. Good Friday pick me up on this cold night, highly recommended 😍

So this was my first UberEATS experience, and what an innovative service indeed. With delivered food options picking up, in the inner city, Uber's presence seems like a wise move.<br/>My Souvlaki and Fries arrived promptly within half an hour, and the ability to see your food's location is such a reassurance.<br/>Absolutely loved the Fries, Garlic Oil, Feta and Oregano is quite the formidable topping combination. The Souvlaki itself is modest in size, maybe a little too... But well constructed and tasty.<br/>'Inspired by George Calombaris', sure lives up to the mantle.
J
Their Moto should be "Jimmy Grants Souvlaki without Meat" where is the meat Jimmy? I ordered a lamb souvlaki and all I got with bread chips and 2 streaks of lamb!
Mickablack
Been to Jimmys in Collingwood since it started Its quick and quality fast food If you can get a seat it's worth sitting in My son loves the kalamata kid and we eat the variety of other souvas The deserts are just Its better to go to Messina down the road for ice cream
Joel Johnson
This place is good. Its a very casual place to go to with great food and a good atmosphere. The food is very well priced and the service is quick
Lauren Billings
Jimmy grants is definitely over rated. <br/>Don't get me wrong - it is very delicious. <br/>However don't go to jimmy grants if you're very very hungry. Firstly you will wait a good 20-30 minutes to serve and secondly it is so so so small. The servings are half of what you usually eat so you will most definitely still be hungry after here.
Lucia
Ok. Fair value. Not going to jump up and down and rave about it. Staff ok. A bit arrogant - goes with the Made guys "we are too good" but food is nice & concept is ok. Not sure it will be around for long. Myer outlet has poor service. Original in St David St is best. Chips & pulse salad great. Try for fun.
Judge Betty Cocker
HIGH COURT OF CONSUMPTION<br/><br/>BETTY COCKER CJ<br/><br/>1. The JUDGE is going to put it out there, but Jimmy Grants (the 'overrated Calombaris establishment') is overrated.<br/><br/>2. The JUDGE has had her fair share of meat SKEWERS in her lifetime. Her fifth husband was TURKISH and he knew exactly how to cook it. He was my kebab king. RIP Erdoğan. You and your meat are severely missed.<br/><br/>3. The servings are too small. BETTY likes it BIG.<br/><br/>ORDERS<br/><br/>4. You can do better visiting Baris at the corner kebab shop. Plenty more MEAT, too.

Had a bizarre craving for Greek in my PJs the other night ... Thought about getting changed but why bother when there is UberEats! Checked it out for the first time on the weekend and it was pretty satisfying. From placing the order to delivery was nearly an hour, a tad long but I did order at 7:45pm. The wait gave me time to have some wine and pick a movie so it wasn't all wasted. Jimmy Grants is good eat in or delivered. The lamb and chicken were both tender, juicy and well seasoned. The grain salad was a standout. The chips with thyme and feta! My word that's is one good idea. It was a very satisfying night in. Will definitely do it again.

Mr Papadopolous/$9.5 - lamb, mustard aioli, chips, onion, parsley. A cool, little hole in the wall shop in Melbourne’s Fitzroy. Amazing greek food for eat in or takeaway. Very popular with the locals. Melt in your mouth amazingness.
Mo A (Ma777444)
Love it, keep the good work. :)<br/>The meat is very juicy and tender, the chips is very delicious. Awesome experience and will definitely come back.
Jase Smith
Nice simple set up and the food is to match. Simple but absolutely delicious. Mustard Aioli is great and lamb so tender. Didnt really appreciate the sound of breaking glass right behind me but I'll know to sit somewhere else next time. And there will be a next time.
Gastrology
Jimmy Grants, George Calombaris’s modern interpretation of an Athenian souvlaki bar delivered a decadent Greek feast. We particularly loved the new gluten free souvlaki on offer. Another highlight was The Homer - Falafels, greek yogurt and hellenic slaw encased within Jimmy Grant's fluffy signature pita. Yum!
Serious Food Couple
Wish we had of got a sharing plate and just made your own little mini bites. We got souvlaki's and both didn't have enough sauce, very dry. Chips are delicious and you get a solid amount.
Some Dude
Only giving this 2.5 stars because it didn't taste bad. Not special, just not bad.  <br/><br/>I know it's supposed to be special which is why you pay a little more, but what i got for much more was definitely not worth it.  Me and the missus and kids, for 70 bucks got enough to feed just me basically.<br/><br/>Plus I waited 35 minutes.  Were going to eat in, but the place is way too small and our seats were near the front door which ended up having a queue of people standing over us.  Decided to take away to get outta there but still had to wait ages.<br/><br/>Staff were nice but cannot persuade me from writing this review. Sorry Jimmy Grants but I will not be back.
Cafelover
This place is a good place to go. Its so good i always have two souvlakis even if im full after the first one, i just cant stop. Keep up the great work

The chicken souva was so good. i wish it had some lettuce in it but the mustard aioli was off the chaain. Better place for takeaway or groups of 2 as there ist much sitting room for large groups.  Chicken was delicious. Fit out was nice- music was awesome.<br/><br/>Nearly forgot!! THE FETTA FRIES- don't forget those... mmmm

Probably my favourite low-key chow spot at present.  The Nonna Maria is a go to, charcoal chicken with a mustard aioli, chips, parsley and caramelised onions, served in a slightly sweet pita.  A perfect congruence of flavours, everything binding in tasty synergy. The chips are a winner, doused with garlic oil and tossed with crumbled feta and Greek oregano.  Possibly the best chips in town.  The felafel roll is also worth a look, loaded with a crisp honey balsamic slaw.  The salads in fact are one of the best things about this place, so fresh and vibrant.  The grain salad is a modern masterpiece, a meal in itself (but which really sings when paired with rotisserie meat) and a really healthy side - freekeh, lentils, herbs, nuts, seeds, currants and a dollop of honey infused yoghurt.  So good.  The village salad is another one to check out - thick chucks of cucumber with feta, pearl barley and herbs.  Really clean tasting and well considered food.  If one has any room left the loukomades are exceptional and highly recommended.  The service is always good, even when they're packed, which is often, and there's a fine selection of beers on hand.  I would happily eat here once a week and have been known to do so.
Hungry-Caterpillar
Really good little place. <br/>Must say I didn't enjoy the excessive dill in sauce. Without that overpowering flavour I would have enjoyed more....<br/>Chips and drinks all good. Will return to try again. Just need to select something without all that dill!!
Georgia Dawson
Atmosphere was the only good thing about this place. Got the nonna maria- which is chicken off the grill with mustard aoli, caramelised onion, parsley and chips. The pita was weird and it didn't taste greek at all. We left at least half our food. Very disappointed after such good reviews. Wouldn't go back
TheEnforcer
Great atmosphere in this trendy little out of the way outlet. Quality of souvas is great, as is the selection of drinks on offer, though the portions are small for the price. More of a quick stop than somewhere to sit and graze, and seating is limited / not suited to elderly or those with mobility issues.
Joy
The souvlakis are so simple but done so well - tender meats, caramelised onion and a perfect hit of mustard mayo. And their chips are amazing, covered in herbs and feta... some times I come in just to order a big plate of chips!
Fredrik Persen Fostvedt
Most of ingredients are super tasty. If you are able to eat dairy and gluten, this place is probably great. I can't have dairy, so I had to get the gluten free bread which is the only dairy free option. It is terrible. Dry tasteless corn wrap. Not a fan.
Out And About
The place to go for real Greek souvlaki and street food! We had a Mr. Popadopolous and a Nonna Maria Souva (lamb and chicken) which comes with crunchy chips and fetta in the Souva. We also had a side of delicious crunchy chips. <br/>Amazing.
Steph A
Love coming here!! The food is fantastic and always delicious!! The staff are friendly and we never have had to wait long for a table or our food.
Michelle
Great little souva place in Fitzroy. The flavours are amazing. They are small so if have a decent appetite get 2!!!<br/>Meat is always tender, and the addition of fries is a nice surprise.<br/>Great for a quick bite and has a nice vibrant atmosphere
Hungry Catepillar
Wow. Best Souva ever! Lamb is succulent and melts in your mouth. Do yourself a favour and check out. Chips come with a sprinkle of goats cheese which were yum. Limited seating though.
Toscito
The recent large increase in prices (aprox 15%) is not respected, when combined with the fact that the portions are getting smaller! This place was very good, but cannot see the value anymore. Yes the food is tasty, but they have really lost sight of their customers, who now must pay min $17 for a small kebab and a very small chips, this is simply extortionate. Onwards people. Rip off place.
BBB
This place is pack with people to take away and a quick dine in. Chips are crunchy, cook with fresh oil, Greek salad nice, dip nice, overall fresh and quality food, will definitely come back to try the roll.
Maheeka Samayadasa
Flavours are good, not bad! Was a little surprised when they served the food right away after a few minutes of ordering (pre made?). Really wish the portions were bigger though for the price. We ordered the sharing platter among "two", both lamb and chicken. Honestly, one plate would be just enough for one person😂. Definitely try the salad out! I enjoyed the salad. The meat was dry, the meat would have been cooked and kept. The chicken meat was good. On the side you get chips with feta cheese crumbled on the top, it was beautiful👌<br/><br/>I tried a cocktail the one with ginger and soda. I wasn't very keen on that one. The bartender/cashier told me that she was only learning to prepare it just that morning. <br/><br/>Other than that! I loved the spot. Good music! It was really chilled.
GG & KK
Delicious. Delicious. Yum. <br/><br/>Bought the chicken from the spit plate, kids lamb souva ($6 - bargain) and grain salad. All were outstanding and have caused me to spontaneously think about that meal wistfully. The meat is top quality, no fat or gristle. The bread is not too oily. The grain salad was amazing. It's a great meal for small kids too as the meat is pulled.
Ninniku
Yep , this place rocks . Production line perfection , excellent deserts , cider of the month is always tops( Kelly Brothers , Wonga Park) . I love everything here and keep coming back . Yet to try the lamb shoulder ( next ) , but looks scrumptious . Go George!
Shazzamataz
Finally got to this place after hearing about it for ages... Glad I did.Great food and friendly service. Definitely a good choice for quick delicious food. Servings not too huge which for me is a bonus. <br/>Update 6 Jan 2017 - still a great place for lunch. Service friendly and food delicious. Fadi (manager?) is brilliant, always friendly and helpful
Steve Kyriacou
The Souvlaki bar that Greeks would never eat at! Jimmy Grants please do not call your food souvlaki or souvas! They are sub standard and flavorless! Simple food and you can't get it right! I am really disappointed as a Greek trying this food!
Oliver
One of the best kebabs in Melbourne, highly recommend bonegilla. Also potentially the best fries I have ever had. Fitzroy store is definitely best. <br/>
"JT" Jeffrie Trika
Okay, I'm not a fan of George C, however I must give him and the team a credit for this one. I've tried his other creations like St. Katherine and Press Club, they are a flop in comparison to his big name in the food industry.<br/><br/>Mr. Papadopolous is spot on, this simple looking Lamb wrap reflects a migrant success story, I can get and appreciate that. <br/>The menu, although simplistic in comparison to his other ventures elevated the food into an enjoyable "foodie" status, most Souvlakis from other Fast Food stores don't usually interest me.<br/>Genuine, clean cut and smart looking food easy to enjoy.<br/><br/>Yes, $11 might seems steep for a wrap and a little serving of chips that's presented well plus drinks, around $20 with an alcohol drink.   <br/><br/>Great presentation of the store, easy to enjoy.<br/><br/>Well done!
David Oldfield
Straight to the point, no nonsense goodness. For a quick pit stop check out this place. Various takes inside a pita. I opted for Mr Papadopoulos, which contained lamb, chips, onions, parsley and mustard alioli washed down with a moon boy.<br/><br/>Quick, friendly service without any pretentious overtones. Drop by.

Souvlaki ftw! Nice cozy place to eat one of the best souvlaki in town! I know they have branches now but I like the atmosphere in fitzroy's branch. I've tried lamb and prawn souvlakis and both were amazing.

Definitely the best of the Jimmy's I have been to. I orded 2, 1 lamb and 1 chicken. I wish they add pork to the menu then it would be complete. <br/>I will be goin back.

Levitated towards Jimmy Grants after a few beers in Fitzroy. I ordered the mr papadopoulos, a side of chips with crumbed feta and oregano, and washed it all down with a Mythos lager. Very pleased with everything. A great little spot.
Dan The Man
From the 'touch Jimmy' door opener to the Mr Papadopoulos signature wrap, Jimmy Grants hits the spot for a tasty, comfort food hangout. George knows the Fitzroy lunch time market and my numerous visits have been equally warm, friendly with consistently good food. And the brewed drinks are a bonus.<br/>My only complaint is the size of servings. A 'large' option would be appropriate to saving ordering 2.<br/>
Mark Thomas
Only complaint is the souvs could be a bit bigger. Pair them with some chips and grain salad however, and you have yourself an epic meal. Sufficiently greasy.
Deborah Pacheco
An average score as for $9.90 a papadopolous doesn't fill my tummy & I'm a small eater. It tastes great, we just need more in one meal. The chips are always perfect with feta & salt.
GC
Normally good but pites were burnt this time.<br/>Also not much meat in the the souv for the price.<br/>Will give it one more chance but going downhill in my view.
Selcuk Erol
Best Lamb Shoulder in town ! Simply melting in your mouth. I wish it was a bit cheaper as I order it regularly. The staff is usually really smiley and helpful. <br/>

The original Jimmy Grants, and for a good while the only one. Remains a fine option for picking up some quick takeaway, and also has a buzzing vibe should you choose to eat in. <br/><br/>The souvlakis are the crowning glory here; the meat plates are a little plain. Dips are also great. Small but very fitting drink list that is well designed around the food.<br/><br/>While still difficult to get a table during busy periods, following the opening of other outlets the vibe has died down enough that this has been somewhat alleviated.
Ashleigh Dougherty
Very yummy Greek street food. The place was a bit too small to enjoy an intimate meal but the price was spot on. I especially enjoyed the chips.
Alex Tee
Perfect place to pop into on my break. Quick souvlaki with a bit of a difference. And can't leave without trying the Greek doughnuts, sickeningly yum.
Kotix
Souv with aoili just doesn't work. Small and over-priced for what it is unfortunately. If you want a souv, let me save you the trouble, do not bother.
Narzi-Goreng
Best Kebab/wrap I've ever had! Crispy hot chips in your sweet soft wrap.... yes please! Wine and dine on Church street or chill in the food court at Emporium, same same... still all delicious!
🌊Pilates🐇Nurse🤸Nutrition🥑
The gyros are yummy & tender with mouth-watering succulent lamb..a traditional Greek cuisine with a modern twist. Atmosphere is funky with dimmed lighting to set a relaxing mood :) I go there often for my gyros fix. One of my favorite places in Melbourne!!!! I recommend it to everyone :)
Joemcguiz
Great cheap eat. Perfect as a pit stop on a hot day/evening... Grab a gyros and a beer for about 20 each. Service is fast and friendly. Will be back
Matt Miller
was not expecting this to be as good as it was, I was straight bamboozled when I took that first bite of mr papadopoulos. It's taste waaaay better then it looks, definitely hit this up. super friendly service too
Snow
OMG love!!! This is one of those places that you crave!!! I have been here I'd say close to 20 times and I have never been disappointed once!! Love this place, the Patris amazzzzzinggg! Chips fantastic! Be warned that dining at Jimmy's can be addictive😃
CoolBeans
The food was yum! I was impressed by the uniformity of the staff. They were very well organised and prepared. Great little place with a lovely atmosphere.
Fatchops
Super delish! Kids loved it, and we may find ourselves doing many a quick drop in here. Serves are a little small, given my 10 year old wanted another souva (and not the kid size either).
Fotis
I've always loved jimmy grants especially had taramasalata which is one of the most authentic I've had in Australia. I love the meat and had grain salad - there's little I dislike BUT! In more recent times the non Greek, non Hellenic aware even, staff concern me. If I'm ordering and you tell me how to pronounce taramasalata, and I'm Greek and you're not, there's a really problem. Authenticity in food should be accompanied by done authenticity in service. Given there are new Greeks, multilingual, young and aspirational, arriving from Greece due to the crisis, cannot the management at least make an attempt to hire one of two? Really? The overt Anglofication of the service and the authenticity of the food are incongruent. The setting, the food are excellent the staff far less so.
Tom Cavanagh
This is currently my favourite spot to go. I've found my self here about four times in the last few weeks. The food is great. It's not an oil filled bag of meat like any kebab shop you go to. This place has class. And a good menu, great vibe and some of the nicest staff. My advice is to add feta to anything and get the chips, but be careful. They are addictive.
ItsTrueFatKidsLoveFood
I was really looking forward to trying this place, as have heard great things. Service was fantastic, but I did think the food was just ok. I ordered the Mr Papadopoulos and it just wasn't anything to rave about, it was also pretty small for what I paid. Had to pick up so more food somewhere else to fill me up.
Keen For Cuisine
Yummy souvas, never had a bad one from here. Definitely recommend getting some chips or something on the side because the souva itself can be on the smaller side for portions. YUM!
I. D.
The food was good, the service was friendly. This place is always packed and sometimes you even have to que to get in. Not sure if it's thàt good, but definitely worth the try :)
Martina Conti
Service is incredible poor, unhelpful and rude. The blonde girl at the counter seemed as if she really didn't want to be working. None of the staff had any clue about Greek cuisine. All in all the food was nice and enjoyable but the service really brought the mood down. Don't think I would go back
Caffiend
Jimmy Grants is alright but when you live in a city that has the second largest Greek population outside of Athens, there are many souvas to compete with. Although delicious, the meat rolls are a little on the small side but I do love that they are served with chips inside. The salads are decent and Mythos is chilling in the fridge. The fit-out looks suspiciously like it's been lifted from somewhere else. Overall a nice experience but I will stick with the tried and tested stalwarts of the Melbourne gyro scene before heading back here again.
One Piece Left
The thought of a new souvlaki place was exciting. We hadn't had much souvlakis since coming back from Greece two months ago, and was dying to relive some memories. We decided to try out Jimmy Grants tonight and was extremely happy we did! <br/><br/>Make sure you touch Jimmy Grants (the automatic door) to be let in. Don't make the same mistake that we did and stand in front of the door waiting for it to open. We must have looked a little silly! First thing we noticed was that there was a lot of people throughout the night. It seems to be an extremely popular place, even for a Monday night. We were happy to get a seat and waited in line to order our souvlaki. <br/><br/>We ordered quite a bit, a lamb souva (mr papadopoulos), a chicken souva (nonna maria), a prawn souva (the patris), a village salad and 2 bottles of beer to enjoy with the souvlakis. The village salad was very refreshing, I like to have a mint leaf with every bite. The best of the best was without a doubt the chicken souva! It was sooooo soft and coated with all that mustard aioli goodness! Loved every bit of it! The prawn souva was also very nice. The prawns were succulent and coated with a thin coat of honey. It actually tasted like a really healthy souvlaki from the cucumber, mint and coriander mix. The lamb was a bit tougher than the chicken and seemed to have less mustard aioli sauce. Still better than what most places can do though. This mustard aioli sauce was such a stand out, how can I possibly go back to garlic sauce!?!?<br/><br/>It was very clean inside and the service was relatively quick. The waitresses cleaned up the dirty plates quickly and the guy taking the orders had great customer service. <br/><br/>Overall the souvlakis were very tasty and prepared to an extremely high standard. The combination of good quality and well flavoured meat, with soft and warm pita bread works perfectly. I highly recommend Jimmy Grants and will definitely keep coming back. Make sure to use some of their Swisse hand wash and hand cream, for clean silky smooth hands before going home!
Hallsy
Can't fault. This place is my absolute favourite ! Love the simplicity, food and service. I would recommend 100%. Reminds me of being back on the Greek islands eating gyros.
Memtree
Generous serve of succulent and flavoursome lamb shoulder, soft and thick pita with a heap of their tzatziki (and squeeze of lemon). Mmmm...salivating just thinking about it. Don't know if I'll even try another thing on the menu because this was so darn good! We also ordered the lettuce salad which gave our meal a nice tang to balance it out. We went early to avoid the crowds and we'll definitely be back!
Marc Wise
Love the Homer. It is the perfect size for you to walk out with a step, rather than stumble home in pain. Chips aren't bad either, would eat there again.
A.D.
Been to this place many times and have always enjoyed it. But went here recently and not only had the prices increased, but I got less lamb than usual in my souvlaki. That's not right!
Princess_Porky
Realised I couldn't leave Melbourne without getting a gyro fix. Came upon Jimmy Grants from a foodie recommendation. They didn't have gyros but their souvlaki pita did the trick. And it was oh so good. Both the chicken and the lamb were so juicy - no sign of any dryness. Lots of flavour, sweetened with caramelised onions and mustard. The standout was the meat filling and the pita bread. Fantastic bread. Only afterwards, we found out it was George Calombaris owned. No wonder.
Andy C
The best spot for an authentic souvlaki ! Cool place and amazing fit out. Love the easy going feel and simplicity of flavours. Really recommended
Heather Pearce
I love this place! The felafel wrap is fantastic (the pita bread is to die for!) and the grain salad is one of the best salads I've had anywhere. A few of their other dishes aren't quite so good-- the prawn wrap was not really worth it, and the desserts were really disappointing (our doughnuts were actually raw inside), but the rest seems solid. The place is quite small and the tables are crammed together a bit, but the service is so quick that it doesn't matter too much (and take-away is available for those who'd prefer their space). The place is also licensed, which is always a bonus!
Diki
Great little place but be aware of the wait- being a small venue if you plan on eating in, you might be waiting a while! Best option is take-away. Great souvlaki and definitely give the dessert a try.
Nancy
If you're looking for quick and easy gyros, this is the place. Seating is a little limited and souvlaki wrap was a little small for my liking but the taste was great. Great work Mr. Colombaris.
Emily Ryan
Sooo good. Smaller portion sizes than I was expecting but packed with wonderful flavours. I love how relaxed the atmosphere is here and great to take someone on a date, minus the garlic breath. They're not the one for you if they don't enjoy themselves here.
Sol_n_chai
Pita bread here is amazing. So fresh, so perfect. Very happy with our meals here (lamb and chicken souvas and the chips with feta). Wow to say the least! Service was brilliant too. Good job guys!
Joel Teo
By far my favourite souvalaki joint. Beautiful dips and Feta chips. The food comes quick too so you can eat and go if your really hungry. Never disappoints!
Barney
I love the food here but the place is full of hipster ironically dressing, looking and acting the same. Thumbs up for the food but the crowd is just boring. Oh the irony!
Antoniette
The grain salad and lamb shoulder - phenomenal! Great casual little cafe. Good service. Awesome food. Have been a few times and will continue to be a regular 👍
Troy Mortleman
Love this place. Souva's are fantastic. The Mr Papadopolous lamb is my favourite. Feta chips and grain salad are top sides. Gets busy at lunchtimes but well worth it.
Julia Birks
Tasty, simple, and reasonably priced. A filling meal that's perfect for those nights when you can't be bothered cooking dinner! I probably should diversify, but I just can't go by the chicken souva! Friendly, quick service.
Little.miss
Who can say no to yummy souvalakis that are easy on the budget. One of these will leave you feeling totally satisfied. The bread is well made, and they are generous with the ingredients. Worth a try!
Nicola
Delicious food. The grain salad was the best and the souvlakis were also amazing. Service was excellent, friendly helpful staff. Can't wait to go back.
Samantha Telepe
Amazing food.  Always fresh and tasty and have never been disappointed.  Only downfall is that it is always busy and the wait time is long to get a table and the price is a little high compared to size.

Delicious but slightly overpriced souvlaki. Bread is amazing but quite thick. And the souvlaki's come chip-filled... Not sure how I feel about that (optional though I'm guessing.)
Chilli And Butter
Like the souvlaki here.. A little bit over crowed sometimes.. Like the selections of beer.. Menu here is really simple.. But good enough. Few traditional Greek desserts. Not too bad.. Love the feeling of hidden place like this..

We went there for the first time for Friday lunch. The restaurant was packed with customers. We had to wait 15 minutes for a table which is fair considering the amount of people were there. This place is full of young people with great happy vibe and great music to match. We had the combo souvlaki and the lamb souvlaki, the flavour was great and the fries were fresh and flavoured well with feta. Really good price, all up was around $40 for the two with drinks included. However, the customer service was poor. We got told off by a rude lady with drag-lock and addressed me as a “dude” which we did not appreciate. Overall the experience was great. I will definitely take our kids to this little restaurant next time, as long as the rude waitress doesn’t scare my 4 years old.

Souvlakis with chips inside just don't do it for me. The sweet bread also gets a thumbs-down from me. I had high hopes for this place, given I usually LOVE souvlakis and always enjoy checking out new foodie haunts. Sadly it won't become one of my regular lunch spots. Also overpriced.

It was interesting to learn that Melbourne has the largest Greek population in the world, outside Greece. Not knowing when we'd make it to Greece, we saw this as our best chance to get a taste of Greece. Jimmy Grants showed up with high ratings on Zomato, and it turns out the owner of this place is George Calombaris - one of the regular judges on Masterchef Australia! Added attraction!<br/><br/>I cursed Google Maps because it led us to a spot where there was no restaurant, and that's when we spotted the blue Plus-below-Minus sign sticking out of brick wall (about 10 feet high from the ground) - and luckily I recognised that to be the Jimmy Grants logo (would have thought it was a clinic or hospital otherwise). I love you, Google Maps - forgive me this one time! I have no idea why the name is not out there, highlighting the existence of this restaurant to the street.<br/><br/>The tables were full, and we only got the bar stools, but it was okay. Very little space to move around, even to just place the order or to use the restroom and return. With the music and the people talking, there is a busy buzz about the place (as expected). Service was prompt.<br/><br/>THE BONEGILLA ($9.00) comprised small pieces of grilled chicken and lamb, mustard aioli, onions, and parsley in a thick fluffy pita wrap. Most surprising was that there were french fries (or 'chips') stuffed in there too! I guess that's how it's supposed to be done, but I didn't quite wrap my head around the fries being in there. Overall, it was delicious.<br/><br/>The highly recommended (on Zomato) CHIPS WITH FETA, OREGANO, AND GARLIC OIL ($7.00) was let down by the excessive saltiness of the salt-feta combo. We, no doubt, persisted because the fries were crisp and (looked gorgeous) and tasted good, but we never got used to the excessive saltiness till the end. Touching each fry to a spot of Sriracha spicy sauce helped matters. An interesting twist to the regular fries.<br/><br/>The GREEK DOUGHNUTS or Loukoumades ($6.00) were a disappointment - four tasteless and doughy balls (like saltless 'bondas' - Indians will understand this) coated with honey syrup and cinnamon, sprinkled with chopped walnuts. We packed this for home and warmed it before consuming, and I don't think there would have been a drastic difference even if we'd eaten this fresh and hot a few hours ago (emphasis on the word 'drastic'   - I'm sure there'd have been SOME difference, but not enough to give this benefit of 'dought'). Each bite had overpowering flavour, and walnuts didn't gel with the concept of the doughnuts and honey; maybe it's a taste the Greeks acquire. But again, for $6.00, it wasn't unforgivable.<br/><br/>Decent lunch, with the prices allowing us to experiment and discover Greek street food (and make mistakes too). I would go back for a few more Souvas.

Good choice to order the Chips with garlic oil feta and oregano as well as two Mr. Papadopolous Souvlakis even though we just had brunch. Chips were cooked perfectly and incredibly morish. The meat was tender and well seasoned perfect with the soft and fluffy bread!

Love these souvlakis! My favourite would have to be the lamb one, and I live how they have chips in them. I feel like I'm back in Greece eating a fresh gyros. The grain salad is really good too. Great place for a cheap feed and they do takeaway too!

Sleek simple clean and modern environment.fun friendly service. Quality tasty souvalakis fries and the best grain salad ever to have walked the earth. 5 stars!<br/><br/>

Snuck into Jimmy Grants after a drink on a Saturday night, tried the chicken and lamb mixed meat souva, we liked the idea of the place, pretty hip and what you see is what you get. The souva was good but would probably just go the chicken next time. It's a nice treat but the kind of food we generally eat after a few drinks.

Food was amazing. Salad was delicious. They didn't have ordinary soft drinks but the organic drinks were ok. Not enough lighting and too loud and uncomfortable seats. But enjoyed the food.

One word... Yummm!!! Have had the lamb, chicken & prawn souvlaki's, absolutely delicious & fresh. Flavors go really well together. The chips with the feta are amazzzing! The only downside is when they closed the take away container, the chips went soggy & were too hungry to go back to get crispy ones. A bit of a let down but might give them a reminder next time I order to make sure they put the chips at the end rather than close up the container 5 minutes before the rest of the food is ready. My 2 year old fussy eater lovvved the kids chicken souvlaki. Now the best part of the meal is the dessert, the Jim Jam is the way to go. It is a chocolate, biscuit, marshmallow & jam wheel that tastes amazing! At $6 each for a small portion, a bit pricey but it's a treat that we get every time we are at jimmy grants, I'm sure it is worth it. Check out the picture of the filling 😋

Small tables and area, uncomfortable to eat. The food itself wasn't even good was very ordinary if not bad. Extremely expensive for the proportion. Definitely would not recommend to anyone.

This place is excellent! Lunch for less than 10 clams these days is virtually unheard of, so getting a souva for $7.50 is a pretty big highlight. The Homer is amazing, but the Nonna Maria really steals the show. Get the fetta chips - you won't be disappointed.

This weekend and the next is one of Melbourne's biggest art festivals. It is an outdoor festival which is free. Here everything is electrifying and you can see all the artworks both in and out. For years this festival has attracted many people. Inside an art gallery. Someone's artwork. De Clieu's snacks for sale

Soo good! can't give a perfect score because if they can improve perfection, I'll die from happiness! chips with feta are such a good idea! I love salt and cheese! and now on chips. amazing.

Having a great night.  Food and atmosphere great,  Then came the donuts.  They were absolutely disgusting.  They were like big balls of stale bread, no flavour and actually inedible.  When we questioned the waitress she said that Greek donuts are supposed to be like that.  No wonder the Greeks are in trouble.  George needs to know that his donuts are a serious let down.  It was a bad ending to an otherwise great night.  George, fix your donuts please!

Amazing chips that come with oregano and fetta! Very accommodating staff that will serve things on the side if you prefer, and friendly service overall. <br/>The pita bread is really delicious, one of the best I've had from a restaurant, as is the lamb - so tender. Good flavours in the souvlaki with a mustard aoili. All items are a bit oily.<br/>The hummus is nice, but has a quite strong chickpea flavour, might divide people based on personal tastes.<br/>The ambience and presentation is positive, an interesting place. Stools aren't very comfortable, but good layout.<br/>The serving size is a bit small for the price, but still good value for a meal with extra flavour compared to other hot chips and souvlaki.
Melbournian
Yessss, somewhere that has gluten free souvlaki!!! I was so happy and not expecting that, thought I would end up having to get a meat and salad plate, but they had GF wraps, and it was so delicious!

This is my favourite souvo joint in Melbourne. A real Saturday arvo tradition. Pretty sure it's the badass Masterchef judge that runs it. Good chips too.
Littleadventuresmelb
Yummy, friendly, reliable. Yes the serving size is a tad on the small size but the quality makes up for it. Quick service, table turnaround is quick enough that it's worth waiting.
Purple Monkey
Pretty damn delious souvlakis.Loved that they had chips in them.  Grabbed some takeaway dips as well and they were pretty good also. A little small but very good.
Toasty
I visited Jimmy Grants because the hype but it seems that it doesn't live up to it, the souvlaki was tasty but very small. I think the biggest let down it the service I got there I stood waiting at the counter for about 5minutes while the cashier talked to some else behind the counter, every now and then he'd glance to where I was standing with an ever increasing line forming up behind me. I hope the other Jimmy Grant's aren't run as poorly as this one.
Matt
Souvas are tasty but small. The plate of slow cooked pulled lamb is delicious. Pretty fast but then it's a very tight menu so it should be. I'd be happy to eat there any time. Only downside is that it can be pretty busy so sometimes there is a wait. Stools are not comfortable but I understand that's to help turnover. Music is bit loud. Chips with feta - unbelievable!
Stephen Raphael
<br/>11th May 2016: unfortunately it seems to have lost a bit of its flare and even its taste. Souvlaki seems heavier and less exciting than in the past. Somethings changed, and not for the better. It's still good but not as good as its used to be. <br/><br/><br/><br/>14th June 2015: Can't really fault it. Best souvlaki, chips, service and location. It's a winner and they know it but they don't cause you grief for it. George, you do some things well and some things not so well but this is a cracker, every time.
Madamcafebeing
Went here fairly late on a Sunday so no waiting for a table! Can't fault it really. Reasonably priced good quality food and quick service! Those fries with fetta👌👌👌
Scrantic
Great place for a quick lunch or dinner of after a few drinks. I've not had a better Souvlaki in melbourne great ingredients. Their Chips and Grain Salad are to die for.
Sean Stove
Well, pretty tasty, but small for the price. A lot better souvas, at better bang for the buck if you know where to look. Still, nice place, fast and friendly.

Jimmy Grants Fitzroy. Great food always busy and great food, must try the chips with feta. Great from warm atmosphere although is a little squishy when its full almost every night!! Not sure about the other store but this one is a keeper staff are nice!!!

Cute little Greek tavern ... Great food for a great price ... Will definitely return ... Opa!!!
Babylee2
Thumbs Down!!. Yep go there if you want dry bread and dry meat, and basically pay heaps for a meal that's disappointing. My souv was that bad i threw it out. Or you can go there if you just don't know any better and you normally eat anything!

Love love love it. Best souvlaki in Melbourne. 'Buff said!

Dinner for two at jimmy grants. I rate my experience 5 out of 5 based on service, price and quality. We ordered the Bonegilla lamb and chicken souvlaki, the salted caramel risogalo and cucumber barley salad. The meal was served very quickly and each food was made to perfection. Perfect for all ages and dietry requirments with a full gluten free menu available. Will definately go back again and would reccommend it to anyone up for a cheap, yummy feed.
Cyn.dawn
Great food, good vibe. I love this place, and would often go there for lunch on my work break. Great food and cozy atmosphere off the beaten track!
Jupiter Jones
It is a "taste once" kind of joint. Let's break it down:<br/><br/>Chicken/Lamb = 0.50c<br/>Bread = 0.50c<br/>Chips = 0.03c<br/>Mayo = 0.01c<br/><br/>They fill the rolls with chips because that is cheap. The rolls are small, anywhere else is almost double in size. The rolls have no fresh ingredients, like tomato and lettuce. Nothing to give it the fresh bite. It is $2 worth of product for a $10 price tag.<br/><br/>Oh yeah, it also had parsley. That's fresh, at least.
Jkcrows84
Too salty!!. My recent food odyssey in the area bought me to Jimmy Grants. Found the place to be packed which is a good sign, but the chicken and lamb was overly salty. Was slightly disappointed.

I'd rather eat a turd. Colombaris is forever campaigning against paying penalty wages to his staff. Therefore I go elsewhere. And it's not like I went to Uni for 15 years either.<br/><br/>..."Calombaris, who stars in the high-rating MasterChef TV show, has complained about the rates he will have to pay staff at his new Melbourne pasta bar, due to open this month, claiming it's up to $40 an hour per worker on Sundays.<br/><br/>"And it's not like they've had to go to uni for 15 years," he told The Power Index website on Monday.<br/><br/>"The problem is that wages on public holidays and weekend greatly exceed the opportunity for profit.<br/><br/>"It's really difficult to stay open and we only do it because of tourism but the reality is it's uneconomical.<br/><br/>"So our labour laws are something that need to be looked at and we keep talking about it."<br/><br/>The cost of eating out in Australia was expensive because of the workplace relations regime, Calombaris said."...<br/><br/>http://www.smh.com.au/national/masterchef-slams-fair-work-pay-rates-20120109-1pri2.html

Melt in Your Mouth!. The lamb is the hero, cooked beautifully easy to have thirds! Don't be fooled by the taramasalata, it might not be pink but it's AMAZING... I really love everything about this place. I've been back several times and I'm always impressed with every aspect (except, maybe, the queue of hungry foodies like me!).

Beautiful food - Beautiful people. I recommend this to everyone! Its my local store and i cant get enough of it. Friendly environment, lovely management and lets not forget the fabulous food served fresh and fast!
Oliverga
So interesting and tasty!. Although they don't taste like traditional souvlakis they are still amazing! They're really fresh and the mustard aioli is to die for! The chips inside are a good touch. They could perhaps be a bit bigger but at least they're cheap.<br/>Oh the feta and chips are great! Their house sav is tasty too. Thumbs up.

Jimmy Grants is a Greek joint that has branch in several areas in Melbourne, famous for its souvlaki. This is actually one of the restaurant I have on my list, I am glad to be able to cross another one off the list. That makes it 5 down, 46 more to go!
Paul.lopizzo
Jimmy Grants is everything you know and love from Hellenic Republic all wrapped up in a more condensed form, and revolving around the scrumptious souvlaki. <br/>There are 5 main souvlaki that you can choose from; Mr Papadopoulos, Nonna Maria, the patris, the bonegilla and homer. Essentially you are choosing between chicken, lamb, a mix of the two, prawns and falafel. What makes these the greatest souva's in Melbourne is the mixture of chips, mustard aioli and parsley. Whatever they do with that mustard aioli is what sets these particular souva's apart from any other.

I love chocolate, so I couldn’t wait to get into the ring donut and I have to say, I was disappointed. I looked so much better than it tasted. The biggest let down for me was that it was quite dry. Each to their own, but I love a soft doughie donut, and this wasn’t that. However they redeemed themselves with the two filled donuts, especially the strawberry cheesecake. I’m not usually into anything strawberry, but this donut was delicious! It was soft and doughie, the icing had set beautifully and the custard centre was just perfect. It’s definitely worth the trip to Brunswick, but my tip is to get into their custard donuts, you won’t regret it. Jimmy Grants 113 St David Street Fitzroy Vic 3065 I pretty much think that anything George Calombaris touches turns to gold. I liked St.Katherines (RIP) and I love Hellenic Republic (I’ve been there more times than I can count), so as the pattern goes, i’m obsessed with Jimmy Grants. In one of my earlier blog posts, I mentioned that I spent 6 weeks on bed rest at Freemasons hospital in East Melbourne, which I just a short walk from Jimmy Grants in Fitzroy. When ever I couldn’t handle the hospital food, my husband would make the dash up Smith Street to get me some Jimmys, and damn did it hit the spot. I’ll even go as far as saying thes

...when George announced that his newest foodie venture, Jimmy Grants, was all about cheap grub, it became my ‘must-visit’ on my weekend in Melbourne. Almost everything on the menu was under a tenner (score!) and as you can see from my sneaky photos, it’s proving popular with people of all ages – even the kiddies were getting in on the Greek action and stuffing their faces with spit roasted meats and zingy mustard sauces. I ordered the Nonna Maria ($7.50), which is essentially a fancy chicken kebab, on the recommendation of the guy at the till. The pita bread is fresh made in store and has a fluffy, almost naan-bread li

...all you really need to know is that George Calombaris’ Jimmy Grants in Fitzroy makes hands down the BEST souva I’ve ever eaten – best one you’ll ever eat, too.
Francesca Distefano
Well this was the best salad I've ever had in my life, I could've just eaten this for lunch. This was the Grain Salad, with pulses, nuts, grains, herbs, and Greek yoghurt. Tangy, fresh and delicious.  After watching the second episode of MasterChef last night (am I the only one who's very psyched that Byron's made it through - his eyelashes alone are just another reason to watch the show) mum and I were inspired to visit one of George's own restaurants and judge his cooking for ourselves. Mine souvlaki is on the left, the Homer, which had falafels, greek yoghurt, and hellenic slaw. Mum's souvlaki, on the right, was the Nonna Maria, with chicken

What a business! In one of the most competitive dining areas in Australia, Jimmy Grants has a line out the door on a frosty Thursday night! The formula for success seems so obvious and it often is when it is so overwhelming.
I Spy Plum Pie
The menu is divided into 5 categories – Souvas, Plate Me Up, Salads, Sides & Dips, and Sweet Street. We eliminated the Plate Me Up section given it involves meat from the spit (not so vegetarian friendly!) and then decided we’d share the vegetarian souva, some chips and a salad. Fi

Eat Like Ushi
Possibly the best after midnight food whilst out and about (which usually also involves recovering or an intermission from a big night of spirits) is the souvlaki. It could well be the best in the world out of all I've tried. From Istanbul's islak burger, Adelaide's Ab(ortion), dimsum in Hong Kong, various doner/shawarma from Europe/Middle East, they all have in common the same heavy rich flavour and the regret of indigestion in the morning. I even tried a few specialty types in Turkey, including one comprised of lamb brain, tongue and cheek (sogus kebab) in Izmir. I've been around.

... the warm and fluffy pita bread, the wonderfully marinated meats or the unique mustard aioli sauce that ties everything together? And of course, those fried chips stuffed inside that are so bad but so good…
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Still warm after the car trip home, they were chewy but surprisingly light, and very good with the walnuts and honey
Chef John Smith
...get your hit of potent garlic sauce, hummus, felafel and slaw wrapped in homemade souvlaki bread for $7? The sauce will still drip and you won’t look any better eating this drunk, but if you’re sober enough you will taste the difference. If you can get a seat inside try the $5 Greek Lager and have a side of fries crumbled with spices and feta.
Emily N
The quality of food at Jimmy Grants is so impressive anyway, but when you consider the price you’re paying for it, it’s madness. There was consistently a small line of people waiting to be seated the whole time I was there on both occasions and I know why.
Steak Me Out
I went on a Friday for a quick dinner with a couple of friends, with the intention of ordering the full menu. I didn’t quite get to get everything (my friends chickened out) but I did get a many a things including the dim sims, chips, Mr Papadouplous, the Nonna Maria, the Patris, and the lamb shoulder.
TriedNBested
Ms M also greatly enjoyed her prawn souva and her only regret was being unable to finish the large portion of chips which we were sharing. But there’s always room for dessert! And a home-made wagon wheel was bought and safely tucked away in a handbag as we made our departure from JG’s.
Melbourne Girl
Our dining experience took all of about 30 minutes - the kitchen staff were pumping out dishes nineteen to the dozen all night, and our meals arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. And with modestly proportioned meal sizes, you don't have to feel guilty about ordering a few different things. Despite being hecticly busy on an early Thursday night, the staff were still friendly and patient. Definitely a new hot spot of mine!
Bedouin83
This place is an insult to real hospitality.. From making you wait amongst tge garbage bins to the cramped seating where you are nudged by every passing diner to the abrupt shouting of staff and minuscule servings of bland unseasoned food at rediculous prices. Amazing to see this place packed with sheep following the hype. I love gazi and Hellenic Republic but this place is a joke. Pass on this one!
Mathiar
Delicious Greek street food! The lamb souvlaki is a must and the feta chips are a no brainer. <br/>Also tried the taramasalata as the chef heard us chatting about it and gave us a sample. We promptly ordered a full serve, it was amazing!
Michy
Best souvlakis!. Trendy place in a quiet side street of Fitzroy. So far the best souvlakis I've tasted in Melbourne. Went one Friday night and it was packed so much we had to wait in a queue outside for a table. Waited bout 40 mins. Considering there were about another 3-4 parties ahead of us, the wait was pretty quick. Friendly and apologetic staff but they were under the pump so kudos for still being friendly and approachable. Definately worth it though. Scoffed our lamb souvs in 10mins! Been to the Emporium one also, completely different vibe. <br/><br/>I'll stick to the Fitzroy one.
Leonardo Afficiados
Poor ... Just got home with take away, wrong salad (iceberg instead of village) and no pita in either of the mains!!! Sloppy!
Rick K
Average. Myself personally, lamb should be char grilled over a low fire,.<br/>This lamb was stewed and kept warm over a gas flame.<br/>The onion was also streamed in a sweet sauce.<br/>If you want a genuine Greek souva, go to Brentford square Forest Hill fish and chips and I don't have a share in the business.<br/>Part owner George Calombaris should hold his head in shame for such a poor effort.<br/>Lamb, stewed in a pot V open fire char grill, you decide.<br/>3 / 10

Im addicted to it. I went there for the first time with a friend and I wasnt too impressed. Probably because of all the hype and how busy it was. I decided to try it again a couple of months later and now I cant get enough of it. I go there every couple of weeks and still not tired of it. The chips with feta is really good and the people are very friendly. Service and taste is excellent. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quick and tasty meal.

Yummy souvlaki. Great atmosphere in a funky little place. Chicken souvlaki is so delicious and juicy.

GOOOOD. Nice little place tucked away down a side street, nice range of greek inspired food, enjoyed some pita with Taramasalata (cod roe dip), fetta covered chips and some classic jimmy dimmy's, all the food was top quality, would suggest the Taramasalata if you've never had it just for something a little different, would return and highly recommend checking it out.

Overall pretty good experience. At night the newly opened Ormond store has a line out the door. I popped in around 5.00pm-5.30pm on a Friday night and we ordered:<br/>1x Mr. Papadopolous<br/>1x The Ormond (fish based)<br/>1x serve of chips<br/>1x Greek doughnuts. <br/>Everything was pretty quick. In fact too quick. I had to ask them to make me a fresh batch of chips as they served them up and boxed it within a minute of me putting my order through. The doughnuts were there too but I didn't want soggy chips. When I asked for it to be fixed, it was no problem and it took maybe 2-3 mins to batch up a fresh lot. <br/><br/>Within the 10 mins or so after ordering, our souva's came and we left to head home eating the hot chips in the car. <br/>I thougherly enjoyed the lamb, absolutly delicious - but putting chips in there is ridiculous. Half a dozen chips to save on maybe 2 extra pieces of meat. --> stupid<br/>The 'Ormond' wasn't bad, but it wasn't a stand out. The chips were great, the doughnuts lovely - 8 to the box. <br/><br/>I'll definatly go back for the chips and a lamb souvlaki again, and I desperatly want to try that grain salad! The serving size is huge. Definatly one to share. <br/>Thanks for opening up in Ormond Jimmy!

Jimmy rubbish. Went to the Ormond store to try jimmy grants for the first time. I can't beleive all the people that like this. Clearly jimmy grants marketing team working in over drive. These souvlakis are hopeless. Apart from the tiny portions, the lamb tastes like it was boiled rather than cooked on a spit. Taste very disappointing from a Greek chef of this calibre. I wonder if he has tasted his own product?! You find much much better souvlakis at your old school souvlaki joints around melbourne. You can't compare and they will be much better value for money! Once all the hype has died down so to will these stores- they won't last!

Mustard aeoli? sweet muck. What, a 16 year old girl takes a small thick oily pita, puts in some great lamb then heaps of mushy chips and squeezes sweet mustardy white gunk from a tube all over it and apparently puts in some onions which I didn't notice versus a Greek guy chopping lamb off a spit revolving over the flames of Hades, putting it in a large flat bread with fresh tomato onion lettuce a good squeeze of lemon juice and Greek yoghurt with garlic which is called tzatziki. Seriously. I mean one bite of that jimmy grants disaster is a mouthful of starch, bread and potato, no room for the great lamb, flavoured with a sugary mustsrdy nightmare, not even at least good aeoli as its described. How is this possible from a Greek chef of that calibre. Go back to your souvlaki shop, just because its old school doesn't mean its no good, and by the way its healthy too.

Private event at a fast food venue? Come on. Pretty disappointed last night when we decided to pick up some "fast food" to find there was a private function. Doesn't that go against everything Jimmy Grants is supposed to stand for? Fast takeaway suvas not fine dining! Not inclined to go back.

Fresh and delicious!. Delicious, just like I remember them in Greece, complete with chips.Have tried all of them- All meat ones are great, including prawn. the Vegetarian falafel was not as great, but still good.
Lydia
Best souvlaki in Melbourne!. The Mr Papadopoulos is absolutely delicious! The meat is tender and juicy, the sauce finger-licking good and the chips are yummy! No one can beat this souvlaki!
Ocean Girl Charlie
Thumbs up. I was surprised how fantastic the souvlaki was, I knew it would be nice but I found it pretty damn tasty! The one at Gazi was just nice but forgettable, Jimmy Grants is definitely worth the tram ride.

Favourite amongst our friends. Great stop before the footy too. <br/>Fast service - food is always good.

Meat platter is a total rip off. $17 and it's around 100g of dry poor quality chicken. The staff are rude. Avoid this place like the plague.

Great takeaway. Family enjoyed Mr Papadopoulos and Bonegilla takeaway souvlaki.... Service was quite quick, and the product is a level above others... Missing the CBD pop up close to work, now that it's closed, so will have to call in here for a treat occasionally...

Amazing food and value!. The slow roasted lamb was so tender and the village salad and tzatziki were both on point! Service was quick and it was so cheap for the quality of the food! Will definitely be back soon!

Mmmmmmm. Tasty Souvlakis, awesome vibe will be back for more!!

Highly recommend!. Been here a few times now. The souvlakis and really good and the mustard/mint goes well. Serving is on the smaller size but I think its worth the price. Definitely try the donuts as well! Don't have to wait long for takeaway either even though they are always busy

Soggy fetta chips here are disgusting

Embarrassment. I'm not one of those people to go out and write a view but my sheer disappointment the second time around compelled me to write one. 80% pita bread and chips, 15% mustard and onion, 5% lamb. There's a reason it's called Mr Papadopoulos and not a Souvlaki. A 4inch Papadopoulos would be more fitting. If I was this guy I would sue this place for defamation. At $19 for two, it's theft.

Tiniest portions for the cost - not worth it, left hungry. next time im going to my local souva takeaway shop

Jimmys' pop-up. Fantastic falafel wrap for lunch. Fresh and very tasty. Good short menu outside of that. <br/>Young crew on service with attention spans to match, but their energy and friendliness make up for that.

WHY THE HYPE?. I finally decided to give this place a go. The only reason I suspect it is as busy at is was because of the sheeple effect ands its celebrity owner. What in particular do people find anttractive about the menu? Its bastardized Greek that I found to be VERY underwhelming. Aioli in a Souvlaki? Since when? Small serving sizes for the cost, and not very tasty.
Tommy Rodger
Very good. Tasty, casual, relaxed and full of souva goodness. Spot on for a casual lunch or a quick bite to eat on a night out.

Great souvlaki. Great souvlaki and fries!! Highly recommended
DP
Loved the place and food. Can't wait to return. Such an easy menu and one that doesn't disappoint. Those chips with herbs and fetta are amazing!

First time here last noght. was lacked at around 9pm. ordered the lamb one with fries and a salad. was a tasty souva and the fries were amazing. salad was nice and was a glod way to finish off. decent. not amazing just decent

Sue Tukavkin. Been here a few times after seeing a review on TV and moving up to Melbourne for work. Love the Nonna Maria souvlaki. Hubby preferred that also over the lamb souvlaki, even though he is a lamb lover. Chips great with garlic oil and feta. Pity, when we saw the owner George there, he couldn't take the time for a quick snap after the promise of one. Tasty food though.

Just that little bit Hellenic. I lunched at Jimmy Grants in the up market Melbourne Emporium where the fabulous food choices are numerous. The masses went souvlaki, I opted for the grain salad. Fresh, yummy and fabulous, perhaps a bit heavy handed with the currents. Why guys do you only have Italian bottled water with straws which are far too short? Aussie water is better and cheaper. Recommend.
Appetite For Life...
Don't order the prawn one eek!. I am torn with Jimmy grants. I appreciate how fast it is and the vibe of the place. I also like that it is off the beaten path (10 metres from Smith Street haha but still..) and I have had a couple of great dishes from here (falafel souva, the salads and the chips with feta on top-yum!). Although I picked up takeaway on a friday night on my way home after a massive day at work and I regrettably order the prawn souva. This was a big mistake as the prawns tasted off and there was this disgusting yoghurt/aioli sauce which was all kinds of wrong. Not only this but the souva bread itself was under cooked. I do appreciate quite efficient fast food although they need to a) use fresh prawns and b) cook the souvas through properly. I'm totally off this place now.

Always Great. To put it simple this is one of Melbourne’s best cheap eats. I have been more than a dozen times and have always been very happy.
Dolly Chew
My Mr Papadopoulas was A-MAZING! Craving for more already
Rachel
Mixed review. Had the nonna maria and tamara with pita. The flavors were lovely and perfect combination however I felt the serving size on the too small side. Not enough meat for a souva. but lovely none the less. I'd possibly go again and order something different.
Kidcaneat
Thumbs up. Tasty and quick..

Couldn't Love It More. I've tried almost everything on the menu and taste-wise, I cannot fault a thing. The famous feta and herb chips live up to their reputation. The salads are generous and have such interesting combinations of ingredients. The pita bread is beyond anything I've ever tried before! The meat portions are quite small, and the tables are even smaller! But I'm still hooked. Actually thinking about getting my lunch from there right now!!

Delicious and Enjoyable!. I was just at Jmmy Grant's in Fitzroy last night and it was absolutely packed. Both my friend and I walked up to the bar got ourselves a cider and popped our names on the list to wait for a table or bar table to sit at. The lovely waitress whom was very friendly said that it would be a half an hour wait so we just stood around the place enjoying our ciders. About 15-20 minutes later the same waitress approached us and told us there was a table available. My friend ordered the Mr. Papadopolous, some Hummus dip with pita and I order 200g of chicken off the spit with tzatziki and a plate of chips with fetta, oregano and oil. It was by far the best food I have ever tasted. The chicken was cooked to perfection, the tzatziki had the most beautiful authentic flavour and the chips were crispy and delicious. I also tried the pita and hummus and it was to die for! The staff were extremely friendly, the service was indeed very quick even though the place was absolutely chockers and it was an overall wonderful experience. I am definitely looking forward to my next visit. Keep up the awesome work! 10/10 from me!!!
Joel
Hey. Really good food, however is the lamb to chip ratio decreasing?
Will
Are they getting smaller or am I growing????. First tried one when first opened and was very impressed, but I have noticed that the sizes are getting too small for the overrated prices they're charging.<br/><br/>What's going on, not a nice thing to entice people and then slowly decrease the size (obviously to save cost) but still keep a higher than average price for a souvlaki...........<br/><br/>SHAME SHAME SHAME
Murray_O
Love the Bonegilla souvlaki. I really like this place. The fries and the accompanying dipping sauces are great. Also love the "Bonegilla". Great thing about this place, no matter how busy, staff always try to find you a place, and I have only had to wait 10 minutes or so at most to be seated. Prices are good too. Awesome concept, and I love the diversity of the patrons - it's not full of your inner-north hipsters to whom many eateries in the area kowtow and alienate the rest.
Christopher James
Do yourself a favour. Go grab a souv from jimmy's and you will have lived a happier life.
Mino
Shrinking sizes! This is the 3rd round of down sizing of packaging I have seen yet price remains constant. Today's immigrants and blue collars can't afford these prices. Shame George shame. It's great food but only for the rich
Elly
I love Jimmy Grants!!!. I drive all the way to Fitzroy when I'm hanging for a souv fix. Consistently delicious and accommodating staff despite how ridiculously busy it gets.
Johanna
Very overrated for the little snack size Souvlaki you get. No Tzatziki sauce served with it. No tomato. No taste. Very disappointed!
EmLou86
Love it!. Simply, easy and delicious. The Mr. P is perfect for a lazy weekend lunch followed by an afternoon shopping on Brunswick St. Now that they've popped up on Collins St as well my souva options are set!
Victoria
Overrated, over priced. Cold meat, poor service. Never again. They should serve their food with Imodium.
Clare
MISS CHU eat your heart out. Talk about a carbon copy piss take "Greek style". The food is over rated, expensive and the service standards very poor. After so much hype from my melbourne friends, i was left bitterly disappointed...
Adam Guagliardo
This place was amazing. Didn't think it would live up to the hype but it honestly did. Both the lamb and chicken was tender and not dry along with the chips which were sensational. Completely recommend it.
Allana
Mmmmm the taramasalata...! And the chips. And the pita bread. I had a mr papadopolous. It was delicious, especially loved the chips in the Souva. They have some good craft beers on tap too. Would definitely recommend for a quick and cheap feed.
In Pursuit Of The YUUUMMM
LOVE LOVE LOVE the entire concept. The souvla, grain salad, feta chips and loukoumades are all winners.
Wingman
Overrated - Why the hype?. After been told by many of my friends to get my ass down to this place I can say I was bitterly disappointed ...from ordering process to delivery took bout 10 minutes...(why do they ask you your name if you are dining in?) We sat at a table for 2 which was about the 3cm's squared ...we ordered two souvlaki and chips..on arrival we got one plate with 2 souvlaki on it so both had to had to eat off the same plate...overpowering sauce was all you could taste...must say chips were great though..not in a hurry to return
Celeste Furness
Jimmy's not "wheely" worth the hype.... Greasy lamb, lukewarm chips and a soggy pita bread made this a very disappointing lunch...Given the hype we thought that Jimmy's Wheel would save the day but this was even more tasteless than the opaque onion relish served with the lamb...<br/>For the first time in ages we wished that we had stayed home instead...
An
Very very quick service! Great fast food! Highly recommend the lamb souvlaki and the chips are a must have!!
Lellett
So busy!. The food is great but it is so busy! next time I might try the one at the emporium because at least then I can find somewhere quiet to sit!
Foodfan1985
Those chips!. I stumbled across jimmy grants when arriving at my old favourite lunch spot the Collins quarter to find it wasn't open as Sunday, which actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise as my husband and I just wanted a quick tasty lunch after a spot of shopping. My husband ordered the souvlaki and chips and I ordered the falafel and all I can say is Yum!<br/><br/>The whole thing was delicious the falafel was really good as well as the lamb with the bread also being soft and fresh but I must say those chips are so fattening but my god so bloody delicious! herbs, feta garlic oil all smashed into them...... comfort food at its best, thanks George what a treat! :)
Foodhunterxxx
Overrated and just SOSO.. The souvlaki is too small and the chips fill up the most. For a Mediterranean food, this shouldn't be having so much carbohydrate, very unhealthy.
James O'Conner
Really not what it's been harped up to be very disappointed, heaps of fat on the lamb and were was the seasoning.
Mtmmpu
Too small, not enough lamb and not the right taste!. For $9.50 I expect to be served a meal sized Souvlaki, not a snack size.<br/><br/>And I want it full of tasty lamb, not half filled with chips.<br/><br/>Worst of all the lamb didn't have that authentic spit roasted flavour.<br/><br/>All too "restauranty" for my liking.
Laura_parra109
Yum!!!
Steve Demos
OVERATED - but great concept. Great concept and great vibe- but I think with all the hype, there are so many people and orders, that they are trying to pump out the food as quick as possible and slapping it all together. - not much love. <br/>the meat was quite chewie and didn't have much flavour, my wife ordered the open souvlaki which is the unwrapped souvlaki and the meat was all dry. I think once the place dies down abit and free from all the hype that the food would get better and cooked with a little more care
Momojaan
So So. Its hard to rate this joint because food was good , it tasted fresh and clean but it wasn't delicious and rating of 90% is way too much maybe 70% would make more sense, will i go again ? maybe ,but i know for sure i won t be rushing back there for some time.
Emmafox41
:/ hmmm. It wasnt a bad experience. but food wasnt that yummy :/
Liz.d.22
So reliably delicious !. I love this place, always busy but great for a bite before going out on smith street ! The ingredients are always fresh and the food is delicious, the falafels are fantastic and the lamb is to die for. I have also tried the salads which are very nice. Everyone who works at Jimmys is always friendly as well which I imagine could be a challenge when it gets super busy! Keep up the great work guys !
Lily N
The best souvlaki I've ever had!. This place is the bomb and only around the corner from home. Service is friendly but slow sometimes and difficult to get a table at times but worth a wait.
I-eat
Expect to wait. I've been to Jimmy Grants twice now, and every time have had to wait 30+ minutes for a table. No complaints here as the food is well worth it! I've tried the lamb souva, mixed souva, chips and the dimmys- all of which I have loved. My favourite thus far has been the lamb souva! The highlight is that aoili, beautifully tangy and just complements the tender meat so well. <br/><br/>The staff are wonderful and surprisingly calm for such a fast-paced environment. I only have positive things to say about this place.
James Ronoson
80 Collins popup restaurant review. Three of us decided to try the takeaway 'lamb plate' from the 80 Collins Street popup version of Jimmy Grants. All in all, a very disappointing experience. Whilst cooked well (offsite then reheated?), the lamb lacked any flavour and could have done with a decent marinade. As a bonus, at least the bread was warm. The tzatziki had hints of McDonald's special sauce flavour when mixed with the lamb. The main complaint, however, was the feeble serving size. For $18.50, this is purely an opportunistic money grab, preying on those who decide to give this 'popup' concept a try.
Cat
The lamb souva was delicious! The meat was tender and melt in your mouth looking forward to returning to try the others.
Jim9429
GREEK SOUVLAKI FAR FROM IT.!!!! VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!. I have heard so much about Jimmy Grants being exceptional Authentic Greek souvlaki.<br/>What are people raving about, it taste nothing like a Greek souvlaki?.<br/>The only authentic part of this souvlaki is the Pita and the aioli.<br/>I ordered 3 Kalamata Kids Lamb, and a Mr Papadopoulos.<br/>Unfortunately my 30 minute wait was in Vain.<br/>The Lamb souvlaki did not taste like a Greek Souvlaki, the meat although being tender, tasted like it had been cooked in a combi oven, and the souvlaki taste you get from chargrilled cooking was not evident at all.<br/>I am led to believe that most of the meat is cooked offsite, and brought in cooked and carved in the restaurant.<br/>There are a few skewers placed on the spit cooking, to give the impression that they are cooked fresh.<br/>These souvlakia are a far cry from being authentic greek.<br/>To try an authentic greek souvlaki try the ones that are available in Oakleigh, the flavour and taste of these are the TRUE TASTE OF GREEK SOUVLAKIA. <br/>Next time you go in, have a look at how many skewers are cooking and how many people are there, and consider how they can go through so many souvlakia with only a few skewers on the spit.<br/>George, VERY DISSAPPOINTING, especially you being such a passionate Greek and promoting the authentic Greek cuisine!!!!!!!!
Kyriacoum
Love love love this place. The son (13 years old) said it was the best souvlaki he has ever eaten. The service is great, always welcoming just wish it was a little bigger.
Katie Winkles
So good. Sides were at our table about two minutes after I'd ordered. Mains/souvs within ten. Didn't order any salad (was w the man who's anti-salad) but they all looked awesome. Small dining area means a wait, but if you're happy to have a drink first it moves quick so is definitely worth the wait.
Kells
Best gluten free souvalaki ever. The aoili was divine, the meat was melt-in-your-mouth perfect, this place is worth the hype indeed.
Chauy
Listen to the hype. Grain salad is prefect to offer a freshness and lightness to an otherwise heavy meal. If you want a cheap, reliable, delicious meal, Jimmy Grants is a sure thing.
Jackieharrisonjackie1971
NO Souvlaki here only souvs. Because its Calombaris doesn't have to be good !!!Chill out people !!!<br/>I have been to Greece many times and this place is doing Aussie souvs !!! Nothing to do with the real Greek thing !!!
Rebecca
Best chips ever!. Ugh, why doesn't everyone put garlic oil and feta on their chips?! Such a simple concept, but the flavour was incredible. Souvlakis were tasty and so was the grain salad. This is very much a "get in, eat, get out" kind of place and I like that about it. It keeps the customers flowing in so everyone has a chance to try the food. Also - really enjoyed walking 70m to Gelato Messina for dessert. Perfect combination.
Kokubear
Best souva eva in the neighborhood. I had the Nonna Maria, chicken, while my partner had Mr Pap, lamb. <br/>I love it because the pita bread is fluffy, warm and toasted filled with mustard aioli and flavoursome chicken pieces. Not to to mention the crunchy chips which I suspect has a bit of chicken salt sprinkle on it. Balanced with the sweet caramelized onion.... <br/>yum oh yum... definitely going back.<br/><br/>oh, there ain't a lot of tables there, so go in early and the speakers r a tad too loud.
Shaun Yates
Great Souva. This place has great Souva's, I had the Mr. Papadoplous and never regretted my decision, the salads are also extremely fresh.<br/>There is no question whether I will be back.<br/>Well Done Jimmy Grants!!!!!
Wesley
Great!. Perfect souva and the chip in the middle made it!
Oz
Long wait but delicious food!. We had to wait about an hour for a table because we were in a large group and we were there at peak dinner time, but the wait was worth it. The souvlakis were delicious. I probably wouldn't go there if you're looking for vegetarian options though.
DEM
Nice food, service terrible and love when staff handle food and the money ... Was my second and last time.
Victor
Delicious and cheap. The place definitely gets packed in the evenings but it's worth the wait. Had the lamb souvlaki which was quite nice and the dim sims were surprisingly good. Would also recommend the grain salad.
Mich
Delicious! Our expectations were greatly exceeded.
Craig Stephens
Quick and Yum!. Good service, good food, cheap and fast! Great!
Maria
Interesting.. Decided to try this place on a whim Friday night, was packed to the S**t but we got there just in time to get a "bar" seat towards the back. Waited for ages didn't get a menu, then a fellow diner told us you had to go up and order and gave us her copy of the menu.<br/><br/>We only had souvas as we had had a smaller snack somewhere else, but the meat and pita were fantastic! the mustard aioli was good but would have been better with garlic sauce/ tzatziki.<br/><br/>Bar tender was rude too!<br/><br/>I'd still come again but just be aware that this is probably not what you'd call typical Greek.
Marymichaels091
Amazing Dim Sims. Souvlaki's were oily and not the greatest HOWEVER the Dim Sims are amazing. Better than anywhere else
TheFoodGlutton
Quick, simple and downright tasty.. Prawn Souva & Grain Salad washed down with a couple of bottles of Fix? Can't go wrong. Seating is a bit squishy but was there for a good feed not a long time, so really didn't mind. Love the take away option for when things get real tight.
Stanaman60
Not Greek to me. Seriously, what is this!!?? You queue up and wait to sit and be seen?? Had the dips which were ok. The Souva's, who puts mustard aioli in a Souva in place of tzatziki?? George you have killed this "Greek Infusion" stuff. Prices were reasonable, but if I want real Greek I would walk the 200 metres around the corner to Jimmy's Tavern or go to Oakleigh for REAL Greek Souva's. Won't be going back and won't be advocating to my friends. I suppose the litmus test for me with any restaurant is, are there any decendants of the cuisine eating here......I can tell you I was the only Greek. Just another trend that will go by the wayside.
Bev Sharpe
Bloody terrific. Just been to Jimmys, boy what a treat, went with family of seven everyone enjoyed all the food we ate and walked away feeling satisfied and not having that greasy feeling you have when you have a souvlaki elsewhere. Congratulations George and thanks to having something affordable. Love that grain salad.
MP
Jimmy says YUM!. Easily the Best Souvlaki in Melbourne. Lamb, Chicken and/or Prawn are all great! Friendly, helpful staff and quick service. Also represents an excellent take-away option. Don't miss the 'jimmy's wheel' sweet treat.
K C G
We thought the souvlakis were decent and good value (chicken and falafel). I would return if in the area and would probably opt for take away given this place always seems to be packed!
RnG
Saw the review around 8pm on Tuesday night & went straight right here. Ordered 2 souvas lamb & mixed, jimmy dimmy & doughnuts. Doughnuts were a little too sweet for us.. But, love the pita bread, fluffy & moist. The meat was cooked to perfection & great match with the mustard aioli. YUUUUUUMMM!!! Best souvlaki ever! Will be back for more souvas!
Phoebe
Do yourself a favour and eat here. Eat anything!
Mick
Seriously. The. Best. Souvas. Anywhere.
Cristy
Yum yum yum. Had the Mr Papadopoulos and Bonegilla souvas, plus a grain salad and Jimmy's Wheel. All delicious. Beautiful lamb the highlight. Would definitely return. Smiling, efficient service too.
Muffin Top
Marry me Mr.Papadopoulos! Best. Souva. Ever.

Loved it. Popped in for a quick weekday lunch.<br/>Great vibe, fun, quality food.<br/>We all enjoyed our souvlakis.<br/>Can't wait until next we meet.

Jimmy grants. Wellcome for Urbanspoon.

Amazing. Best souvlaki I've ever had - and I've been to Greece! Slow cooked, amazingly tender lamb melts in your mouth. The pitta is delicious and everything else is fab. Gets v busy though so plan your visit.
Gpattersonmelbourne
Great Dinner. We came with 4 others and has a great night. Good value, full of locals.
How Good's Food
Nice souvs but seriously........ Not a hater, in fact George Columbaris is my fav Masterchef host, but he can put his name to cat food served as pate' in a trendy place and everyone will say its AH-MAZING.<br/><br/>The food is good, unique souvlaki's no doubt, but there are many other souv joints in melbourne that are just as satisfying and much better value.
Anna Stephanie
Food was amazing! Nonna Maria, feta chips and a vino, perfect combo! The staff behind the counter need to work on their people skills though, we had never been before and the guy was very outwardly rude to us. No seats though so best to get take away.
Ellie D
Georges Best. Delicious souvlakis and even better salads- highly recommend the grain salad! I'll be back soon
AppleBerry
Sweet and Sour. We decided to suss out what Jimmy Grants had to offer and were impressed. We had the bongilla and were impressed at the simple combination of flavours, quality of food ingredients used. I found the steamed jimmy dimmy not to my liking though, it tasted like there was something missing. The person that greeted us and took our order was a bit 'meh' but at least the person who brought out our order had a smile.<br/>A yes to being a returning customer.
Sofia
Delish. Went here for the first time with my partner on the weekend. We drove past and were a little taken aback at how many people were in and around the restaurant. We almost drove away because it looked crazy. Luckily we decided to actually go in and just order take away because the souva was amazing. You wouldn't want to have a sit down dinner here because it fits about 4 people inside. The only downside is that we had to sit in the car and eat (romantic) but it was so delicious we really can't complain. Will definately be back
Anthony Paige
Hardest Working Staff Ever!!. As a regular visitor to any establishment, you would notice straight away if standards slip or if the quality of the food changed. However, after a long 'food' relationship with Jimmy Grants, I have to say it has only been getting better and better. Last nights visit was one the best experiences I've had in any eatery I've visited. The place was overrun by hungry visitors as usual, but the staff, looking rather exhausted from the stampede that preceded our visit, still worked with the same efficiency as if the place had just opened for trade. <br/><br/>We came a little on the late side (9pm) expecting there would be some free tables, but there still was a queue. Not waiting for long (about 5 minutes), our trusty waiter who must not only work at Jimmy Grants but live there also coz he's always working every time my friends and I visit, had us seated with a friendly smile. I don't know how he always remains on for the amount of work you see him do, running around serving tables whilst keeping tabs on the people waiting for a seat, but if there was a SuperGreek it would be him.<br/><br/>Next we ordered from the lookalike Bryan Adams at the bar. Never one to look like he couldn't care less about what you want to eat or where you're sitting, he smiles and has a chat with you, and he's always genuine with the way he acts and listens - unlike some of the robots or fake people you have to put up with at some of the more wankier establishments.<br/><br/>The food must continuously come off the conveyor belt because within minutes of ordering (remember its well past 9 o'clock at this point), the souvas my mate's have ordered come out perfectly cooked and neatly wrapped. Yet i still wait for my plate of meat to arrive. As the time ticks by, i look toward to the kitchen, and it's probably the first time i've noticed the speed at which things happen in there coz it's FAST. Before i even start think something is wrong with my order, the friendly bar man pops up and is apologetic that there's no more yummy spit left - which i totally understand - its late and there's no point putting more on for another half an hour of trade. He offers me a few free souvs, but hoping i didn't sound too mean, i wasn't in the mood for a heavy meal just before bed so kindly declined and asked for a grain salad instead. Not a problem! He refunds me my money for the meat platter - even when i say to deduct the amount for the salad, and goes to the kitchen to not only bring back a plate of the grain salad, but it's topped with chicken too! It must've been the last of the spit, but it was still delicious, and left a great smile on my face for the rest of the night. <br/><br/>I couldn't help but leave my refunded money in the tip jar, I felt too guilty they went the extra mile to please me, and it was the least i could do. This place is truly the greatest!!!
Phon Vongdara
Overcrowded and overhyped. But they make a mean souvlaki. It's friggen good. Especially when you're drunk (but don't they all taste good drunk??). If you don't mind elbowing your fellow diners while eating, their souvas are the bomb. Otherwise, there's heaps of equally-good things to eat on Smith St.
Sueberger000
A Mr.Papadopoulos? I'll take 2!. Great shop, great concept, and I really like the mustard aoli in place of the standard tzatziki. Also, the fries wrapped in the souv, just like in Greece. Can't wait to try the prawn souv on my next visit.
Tom
Average. Not quite sure what all the fuss is about........I thought the portions were small and both of the ones I tried (chicken/lamb) were quite dry. Based on my first experience I probably wouldnt bother going back.
Chiclife
Best cheap eat food!. Went to try out Jimmy Grants after all the good reviews on urbanspoon!<br/>Must say, absolutely loved it!<br/><br/>The lamb souvlaki was delicious and comes with chips inside the souvlaki! <br/>The chips are also good as well as the salad!<br/><br/>The place is more like a wine bar than a dining place, quite small inside! But you can get takeaway!<br/><br/>I will definitely be back!!!
Joe G
Took a Sheila here... That night I got hounded. Definitely reccommend it.
Jennifer Kate
Sumptuous Souva. After seeing such great reviews on Urbanspoon, I knew I had to test it out for myself to see what all the hype was about. For one, the place was packed even after the lunch rush period, therefore the ambience was awesome. This combined with the friendly responsive service and succulent food convinced me that Jimmy Grants deserves a place in my list of favourite restaurants.
GetFat
Great taste but small meals. If you're in the area and feeling peckish, check out Jimmy Grants. good food at reasonable prices given the label. The souva and chips servings were a little small for my liking and so was the restaurant, so probably skip if you gave a large group or just take away!
Soireesisters
Crowed at times. Overall great food. Loved the chips the first time.. but the next time they were super salty. Loved the grain salad. Loved the souva except for the chips inside it! Very crowded at times.
Djok187
Best lamb in ages. We stopped in for a late quick bite one Sunday night and ordered the slow roasted lamb shoulder on the plate and the small chicken souva. Both meats were succulent and so tender - the best I've had in ages. The pita bread was soft and thick but not too thick and I'm pretty sure its made there. I don't think I can eat an ordinary souva ever again!
Get Your Eat On
Decent. Similar to Hellenic Republic and Gazi, but more souvi focused. Not a fan of the mustard mayo thing they put in the souvi but love everything else. Feta in chips? YUM.
Jen Holmes
All wrapped up with goodness. I have been to Jimmy Grant's several times now and enjoy every time. Yes , it nearly always seems to be busy - but - the staff on are always friendly and try to get you a table within the hour if you want one. I think one thing worth mentioning - the dimmy's can be purchased separately if not sharing - good to remember if you are dining with vegetarians! The nonna maria (chicken) is always tasty with plenty of chips in there for those carb lovers. I can't say I have had a bad souva - and I'm always willing to wait. I used to hate souvalakis but Jimmy's has for sure changed my mind! Good mix of beers too, not the usual suspects and friendly bar staff always willing to offer an opinion up on what you might like. Dessert wise - I've only had the sticky donuts but had to have them without the nuts - I think they would be better with them, but unfortunately if you are allergic to nuts and they come without - they are quite full on with nothing to break up the flavour. A bit of ice-cream wouldn't go astray!
A.
Nice souvas. Jimmy Grants is definitely not your usual local Greek establishment, but more trendy and contemporary than most and with a very affordable price tag. I understand the concept Columbaris was going for, and I don't think he has missed the mark.<br/><br/>I was excited to try this place out as I had heard a lot of mixed reviews but also a lot of hype. I had the souvalaki w/ prawns, attiki honey, mayo, cucumber & mint, chips w/ feta and the grain salad. I had no complaints whatsoever with the food. It was enjoyable, yummy and nice to have a different take on your usual Greek fare. The souvalaki itself was so soft, moist and the perfect size for me.<br/><br/>The size of the place, and seating is rather tight and squishy, but you have to take it for what it is and not for what it is not.<br/><br/>Definitely worth the visit :)
Claire
A big 'yes' to the place and the souvlaki. The pita was really good even though abit salty. For the drinks, one of the nicest ciders that I have tried, gonna come back for both food and drink
Adam DeGiorgio
Disappointing. I'm a huge fan of a souvlaki. Also a fan of George's other establishments. Jimmy Grants unfortunately is awful. The souvlaki I had tonight was small, which is fine. The place itself is pretty cool if you're into that hipster type vibe. But I'm really interested in the food - which is average, at best. Maybe it was an off night, but what I ate was mostly bread and chips. The pita is really lovely and soft, but so thick it makes up 40% of the subtance of what you're eating (given it's rather small). The chips makes up another 40%, and they're a little soggy. There is very little meat, and almost nothing else to speak of. The flavour of the meat is great - but there just isn't enough to actually taste - you're overwhelmed with the carbs of the bread and chips.<br/><br/>Won't go back unfortunately - will stick with the Lambs and Ulysses of the northern suburbs for a real souvlaki.

Souvlaki!. Souva's are really quite nice, although they aren't huge. <br/>Reasonably priced too.<br/>I'm sure there are better in Melbourne but worth a try if you are prepared to wait out the huge queue...<br/>Music is super loud, doesn't bother me but might annoy some.
Callietta
It's obviously popular and the offerings are not what you would see at your typical Greek local, such as the grain salads and the prawn souvlaki. I can only speak for the souvlakis- bonegilla and papadopoulos. They were small for the price and very greasy (the dinky paper bag they packed the souvlaki in was soaked with oil) and not enough salad greens. The thick cut potato chips in the souvlaki did not add to the taste or texture as they were just soggy carbohydrate. The meat was fine but no better than so many other souvlaki joints around town. I assume that George Columbaris is simply following the souvlaki formula that is typically found in Greece. It was interesting to try it once but it didn't make me want to eat it again.

Ok, but not sure I'd go back. The souvas were enjoyable, pitas were the best ive had, really soft, but the souva felt salty towards the end. This was probably because the chips were extremely salty, the feta on the chips was waayyy too salty to eat, and this was making the souvas taste saltier when perhaps on their own it wasn't too bad. we had the village salad also after struggling to find a salad I wanted to eat (nothing with tomato in it - like the souvas - I like my tomato) and felt it was average.
Sabrina Foenander
Souvo great. Great chips. Best thing ever was the wagon wheel!!!!!!! Loved it.
Treats
Like it much more than Gazi. Food reliably good at all though
Ayla
Very impressed Jimmy very impressed. Fast service, amazingly fresh and tasty food. Had the tatziki, pita, village salad, bongella. Only let down were the Greek doughnuts. Can tell not made by a Greek. Will def be back and recommend
George Avramopoulos
Went for dinner last night. Ordered two souvlakia fries and the grain salad. The grain salad and fries were sensational and the souvlakia were perfect. The lamb and chicken were tender. Would definitely go back again and it's my favourite place in Melbourne hands down.

Packed-o-Rama. After swigging a beer while waiting in line for a table for 40 mins, we really enjoyed our souvlakis and salads. I guess not really pitched at my age group(ie not really young!)..my only criticism was pumping loud music. Nobody else seemed to mind, and at least it gets people in and out quickly. Delicious, unpretentious and good value.
J_cinta
Modern twist on an old favourite!. Loved this new modern take on the good old souvlaki! Simple and exciting menu, tastes so yummy, fresh ingredients, love the sauces...only thing I would change is to make them bigger! :P Can't wait to try more!<br/>Cheers guys x

Brenda. A favourite for a quick delicious bite.
The Tastebud
The best fast food I have demolished in a long time. A fab affordable 'restaurant' that allows diners to return multiple times due to the food being affordable, delicious and fast.<br/><br/>I dined at Gazi and wasn't that impressed. This place- different story.<br/><br/>I hope that more will open across Melbourne. <br/><br/>Onya Georgie!!

Yum in the TUM. YUMMO...is how I would describe it..<br/>We arrived today for lunch. Was busy but still able to accommodate 2 adults and a pram. The service was primo. Even though I felt as our pram was in the way. .the staff were more than helpful with finding us a suitable seat...<br/>Hubby had the 'Mr Papadopulous'-LAMB I had the 'the patris'-PRAWN<br/>we shared chips and also a cabbage salad. What a delicious meal. <br/>can't wait to go back!

ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!. Delicious, delicious, delicious! Only word to describe the food at Jimmy Grants. Felt like I was back in Greece- so authentic, fantastic customer service and quality food. Can't wait to go back.

Another excellent restaurant by GC. Really enjoyed dinner here a few nights ago. It's fresh, filling and seriously tasty. Very well priced also. The tables are really small though so it was a bit difficult with four people, but we managed. I'll definitely be going back on the regular.

Whole new meaning to the humble souv!. Ate dinner at JG last night and I was blown away - so very tastey, I've never had such a moreish souv!
LTF
Zorba the delicious. I had my first souv from JG's a couple of weeks back and let me tell you, they must've put something in there because I couldn't stop thinking about it for the rest of the day. Even going to bed I was rolling around muttering to my girlfriend about this amazing souvlaki. Anyways I've since been back (and doubled up on souvs to satisfy my gluttonous lusting) and it still gets the thumbs up!
Deedee
Great souvlakia. Loved this place. Great atmosphere and fantastic food.

Meh!. I popped in with some friends to see what the fuss with the lines outside were and to be honest im sure it is generally good food but personally i could not have been let down more i got a souvlaki with lamb and NO SAUCE? DRY CHUNKS OF LAMB FAT? and mainly filed with SOGGY CHIPS? but at least the chips did work to lubricate this otherwise dry and standard lamb chunks.<br/><br/>So if your hungry and in collingwood just go anywhere else.
Greedygreedyguts
The humble souvlaki has taken a hip and ever delicious turn at this heaving entry from George Calamboris. He's beating the other local Greeks at their own game and who knows, could edge out Stalactites as the Melbourne staple. The meat is tender and the pita is fluffy and thick. Must try is the grain salad, full of goodness and subtle flavours. Most items are priced under $10, making it a fun night with mates. Finish off with the signature doughnuts covered in honey and walnuts. Service was efficient and friendly. Even though we had to line up, the server kept the long list of names moving.
Noulzies
Words can't describe the deliciousness!! <br/>Love going there & love the food
The Oracle
Oh please, more hype, squat. Ok, so there are lines outside, pure hype, true it fills a fast food void by having hip waiting staff and beers at a souvlaki joint, but that is all it really is<br/>come on people, are we all sheep, following this hype?....cant we see the souvas are undersized, taste good, which is average, you cant get a spit wrong, its just charcoal and meat. Oh, and they add chips to the contents of the souvlaki.<br/>Small place, stoop to eat your undersized souva with a novelty of having chips in it, balance your beer on your knee, or if you cant find a seat, and chances are you cant, as it is a little cave, and you still crave to be seen, then go have a squat on the pavemen t outside and eat your souva there, hey people, u think u are in the in crowd, but it is not a good look.<br/>Still i can recommend 10 other places that have been doing souvas for thirty years, are moist, juicy, spicy with dips, large, value for money and no silly gimmicks like chips in the souva.<br/>still, if you like a beer, a small souva, and like to be seen with all the hype in a cramped little cave, stooped on a little stool or squatting across the street eating off the pavement, then go for it.

Who wld have thought a Greek restaurant could have steamed dummies on the menu? Well they are hot, good sized and yummy. The taramasalata is too die for everything else is pretty darn good too. Fast service is a bonus.

The Patris - best 'souva' ever!. Grabbed some take-away as a wait for a table for five would have been too long - the place was buzzing New Year's Eve for lunch. Friendly and efficient service, and the food, once ordered came quite quickly.<br/><br/>Gripe? As we grabbed take-away it would have been courteous to have been offered cutlery for our salad and sauce for our dimmys.<br/><br/>Flavour? Out of this world! Faultless 'The Patris' with it's combo of fresher-than-fresh prawns, attiki honey, mayo, cucumber, mint and coriander. It was a refreshing bite every time, and the prawns were so fat and the salad so crisp, it all married perfectly (loved the hint of sweetness). 'The Bonegilla' was given the thumbs up by three of my fellow eaters, and our youngest enjoyed 'The kalamata kid'. Highly, strongly recommend the Grain Salad - even if you think 'health food' isn't your thing, it will convert you, it's magic good! The 'steamed jimmy dimmy' were very good, I think I'd like them better with sauce that I saw tables having their's with. I was surprised by the amount of oil left in the box, but they have good flavour all the same. The bread is clearly a stand-out, soft and fresh as can be.<br/><br/>Tempted by the sweets, will have to try next time. Thumbs up on the enviro-packaging for take-aways too.
Kk
We will definitely go back. Souvas were yum but personally don't get the chips inside....there is just way too much of it its almost like a way to cut cost rather than for the flavour and texture or whatever
Freza
Good fun. Great place for a casual catch up with mates. The kebabs are meaty and are good value. A new favourite place in Melbourne.
Desmondoyaji
Some funny and weird combo fillings in those souvlaki, but I love it! I mean this dining scene need something new n fresh isn't it? If all souvlaki taste the same, what's the point? Great stuff jimmy!
Dandygurl7
They are a little pushy. Food is great value for money. And super delicious!<br/><br/>Only next time maybe i'll get takeaway.<br/><br/>The staff kept taking plates that were half finished, and as soon as we finished our drinks the glasses were swiftly removed from the table. We got the message and left not a moment after!
Athena Darmos
Delicious !!

It was just ok.. I wouldn't go back. Over rated & over hyped . Food was average.

Good and fast. Tried it last Thursday! Excellent food. Was not impressed with the choices initially but was blown away with the quality of the food. Had the prawn souvlaki - yummy , generous with the number of prawns. The grain salad was excellent and well balanced. Slow roasted lamb just falls off and melts! Excellent food at reasonable prices! Love it
Ellen
Excellent!! My party of 4 ventured there last night. We had a 40 min wait for a table, which I don't consider unreasonable for 8pm on a Friday. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and all had a smile despite how flat out they were. The wait was eased by the 'doorman' keeping us informed every 10 mins about how long it was taking to seat us. This extra attention made all the difference. We felt like part of the family, not just annoying customers!<br/>We ordered a wide range from the menu. My Bonegilla was to die for. The meat just melted in my mouth and the flavours were incredible. The side of chips has changed my perception of chips forever!! Chips, olive oil, feta and oregano... BOOM!! What a combination!<br/>Overall, we are already planning our return visit! Keep up the great work and food!
Nicole Raynal
Overhyped. Another overhyped cool looking Melbourne eatery. I had the Nonna Maria Souva and my partner had The Bonegilla. The bread was definitely special but the rest was nothing out of the ordinary. Value for money could have been better and the bar staff, plus the staff taking orders looked rather pissed off.
Yan
New souvlaki joint with simple menu with choice of healthy salads. Friendly and quick service . Ingredients really fresh and yummy . Great cheap eat place with good vibe. Nice to see this addition to smith street .
Wonderfull
Considering that this food was affordable I think quite poorly of the vibe. Timing was everything. Honestly queuing endlessly for an age was boring. Happily satiated customers masturbated over hipster fodder.

Delicious. Went to Jimmy Grants last Friday for lunch.Got there just in time as it is a small place with very limited seating. I shared the village grain salad, chips with fetta/oregano with a friend and we had a souvlaki each.<br/><br/>The bill came too $42.00 for all four items and we were very full.<br/>The food we shared was amazing and I will be hooked on this place.<br/>The lamb was very tasy & tender and the bread was soft and yummy.<br/><br/>Will be back very soon
Brickparty
AMAZING. Best souvas ever! Delicious home made bread, the mustard aoli is to die for, the meat falls apart in your mouth! Quick turn around too so although it might be busy, you will get to eat pretty quick.
Favourite Flavour Vanilla
Great place for a quick bite with maximum 4 people, it works better that way. The food is good value for the flavour and portion sizes are a little small but for $8, perfectly melt in your mouth lamb (not the chunks of fat you may experience down the street) a punchy aioli and a perfectly crunchy chip, it's filling with a beer on the side. The service is fast, the staff are a little hipster would be my only criticism but I'm fairly used to that in fitzroy! I'd definitely come back next time I'm in the neighbourhood for a quick, delicious bite.
GB F And W
Great place for a quick bite! Staff are fantastic. Feel like I'm in Greece all over again! The best souvlaki in Melbourne hands down.
Kylie
It's my boyfriend & my go to place - absolutely unreal every time. Dimitri runs the place perfectly & the food is amazing. All the complaints I've read on here are interesting...souvas in Greece are this size AND they come with chips in them. The only thing slightly different is there is no tomato or lettuce but if you want a late night type kebab then go elsewhere. Want a traditional Greek souva then go to Jimmy's. As for price, my boyfriend & I normally get a souva each & a side to share. For this & two beers we leave paying just over $35...I would NOT call that expensive!! Do yourself a favor...try Jimmy Grants!!
John Ioannidis
LOVE IT. Lil over priced but great lil location and food
Tkay
Snout. Very disappointed by this offering compared with the glory days of Twins Lygon St in the 1970s. Found the souva to be fat soaked, greasy and unhealthy - no salad in the to go version....does souvlaki ever come without lettuce and tomato? Regret the innovation of chips turning a Mediterranean staple into a chip butty.
Justzed
Another Like but some very small portions and tables. Party of 7 ventured out for early dinner...4 adults and 3 kids under 8. We must have been an interesting site crowded around a table....oh did I say table I meant side table....while trying to juggle water and food on the same side table...but it was ok. Now to the food the souvas were excellent but like George a little on the small side....the men in our party needed 2 more. I shared a plate of lamb....for $18 while delicious very small portion and both my sharing companion and I were left hungry. To the good...the chips with feta, the to die for grain salad....we ordered another serve....even one kid liked it...the kids souvas perfect sizing...we'll for kids under 8. Staff are extremely friendly, great interior....toilets in particular decked out nice...yeh I like the Swisse hand soap and cream....George is obviously good with the sponsors..nice! We will definitely be back....kids enjoyed it and while we didn't have dessert there....close proximity to Messinas resulted in a great family night out!
John
Perfect everytime.

I like it....kind of....but also don't like it...hrrrmmmm. This place stirs up feelings of ambivalence within me.<br/><br/>Firstly, the service was good both times that I went. The venue is small, but I like the setting and design.<br/><br/>The food? Ah, this is where the ambivalence begins!<br/><br/>The quality of the meat is great overall. Tender, nicely marinated and plenty of it in the souvas. The portion sizes are small however....and not great value for money I think. Not a fan of chips in the souva either. And while I'm not a huge salad dude, where was the lettuce and tomato? Would also prefer tzatziki in my souva.<br/><br/>The chips were done very well; I like the idea of fetta, Greek oregano and garlic oil. And the doughnuts were pretty good too.<br/><br/>But....after giving this place a couple of attempts, I'm not sure I'd return.<br/><br/>It has its good points, but it also kind of frustrates me....particularly as I heard George lament a contestant's small portion size on the Masterchef program....and then serve up small souvas....hrrrrmmmmm.<br/><br/>For souvas, I'd go elsewhere. May give this place another go for a plate of lamb and some tzatziki however....
Crispymelbreview
I like it...but only just. It was a borderline decision. The quality of the ingredients is very good; however, the portions too small and expensive for their size; and I do prefer tzatziki to aioli in my souvlaki.<br/><br/>The menu is manipulated to the owner's advantage: one has to order many portions; the cost adds up. For example, I remember the good old days of Greek hospitality when dips were offered with pita bread; in this cold Brave New World they are served as individual portions; and moreover, the pita breads are portions in themselves.<br/>The seating is difficult. One table can barely seat two patrons and is cluttered with cutlery, paper towels etc. It seems more geared as a take-away and quick turnover. <br/>There is an evocation of the migrant's journey from Greece on the walls and blue permeates the interior; however, I couldn't wait to finish my meal, leave and get some fresh air from all the chaos.<br/>All-in-all: the petite souvlaki portions are delicious; the salads adventurous and mixed; the fried doughnuts (loukoumades) a real treat.<br/>The staff are informative, but if you want to dine not very attentive as it's all self-service in finding your way around to water, drinks, re-ordering etc. and a bartender picking his nose was very off-putting, even though I have to add that on a prior visit, a Greek bartender was an absolute delight.
AJ
Different type of souva. I like Jimmy Grants. Its great for lunch.... Not too expensive. The meat is soft and falls apart .. Different to the average souva but good different. The bread is smaller and fluffier ... I like it. A lot.
KATco
Geez how gullible people are. It's just a souvlaki bar owned by a celeb chef. Not even as good as lambs ! Seems recipe for success is to hitch your wagon to a tV chef and charge 300% more for the privilege of eating there. Good on them it works. How long before people wake up to it. Me thinks ...... Never.
Jess
I like it. I have been here a few times and I really dig it. It's a jumping vibe full of tunes and chatter. It's sometimes takes a little while to get a table, but it's a pretty quick turnover really considering the numbers they're pumping through. The staff are always smiling and happy to assist even though they're flat out. As for the food; it's delicious. The homer and the grain are my faves and I really like the sweetness in the slaw, The donuts which I can't remember what they are called in Greek are bloody awesome, but way too sickly sweet to eat a whole bowl yourself, take a friend!
MuchLoveForAll
Wont go back.. Three of us went on a Wednesday night, 3 souva's, two salads, steamed dimmi's, chips, drinks about $71.00 all up.<br/>Food was average. Lacked any real flavour or seasoning on the meat. I had the lamb, and was disappointed. Completely forgettable, not even done on the spit. One of my mates had the prawn and the other the combo. Same story from them, no punch, no flavor, forgettable. <br/>Where is my garlic? Where is my salt? Where's my sauce?<br/>The dimmi's were infact the only good thing! Tables and stools are tiny. You order at the bar, and they bring to your table. No more, no less.<br/>Wont go back. Worst version of a souva I've ever had.
Zoki
Went to Jimmy's with relatively high expectations but left dissapointed. Tried Mr Pap, Nonna and Patris and all three souvas were extremely greasy. The fact that they were flat out might be a reason but if you are after a souva go to Gazi. Slightly different but much more appetizing.
Manonlook
Lamb Souvlaki????<br/><br/>I have ordered lamb souvlaki and once got it and tasted it there was no smoke flavour from the spit roast.<br/>Lamb had that steamed smell .Asked waiter about my order ...he said that lamb was roasted in the oven and only the chicken was <br/>from the charcoal spit. Short cut by the master and his words ..”never take short cuts in cooking”.<br/>Amazing.... not one Greek has picked it up yet???
Alista Tiddy
Dining late after arriving from Canberra, my daughter suggested Jimmy Grants in response to my hankering for grilled lamb. Good suggestion with ample servings of slow roasted lamb shoulder & spit roasted free range chicken ($16/17) accompanied by pita bread and tzatziki. <br/><br/>Sides of taramasalata and a grain salad @ $7/8 were good sides making our visit memorable. Well worth a visit!
Kady
Loved it! Jimmy's has become a regular place for my friends and I. I would go as far as saying it's the best souvlaki place in melbourne. The chips with feta and oregano yummy! And the salads are delicious just need to try all of them. It takes me back to Greece...I love this place!
Mrjoshuawood
Good food, but a disorganised, don't care attitude. I dropped in for a souvlaki and was disappointed with the service. The lady I ordered with gave me some attitude, accidentally shortchanged me, then also forgot to put my order through.<br/>After 15 minutes I was asked how I was and I let them know I'd already ordered. An apology from the lady I ordered with would have been nice. A similar thing happened to the table next to me while I was there - they had been waiting for a long time and had to go up to reorder their meal as well. This was on a quiet day.<br/>To be fair though, the food was nice and the manager himself was friendly and apologetic - I guess you can't judge a place entirely on individual staff members who may come and go.
Sammy
Surprising not to see a standard souva with tzatziki but I ordered the mr papadopoulos and added the tzatziki to that. The meat was so tender and juicy. The only thing that I'm undecided on is the pita - it was a bit too fluffy like a pancake. The chips with feta were awesome. Staff was friendly but a little too eager to clean the table so we could hurry up and leave. Would go again but would grab take away so I could eat at my own pace
Jonathan
Good food rude staff. The staff made ous never what to go back
Layla
The hot chips are amazing! <br/>Get in early gets busy quickly <br/>Take away was not a long wait which was good.
Grace
Souva fantastic. Get to this place early because it gets packed very fast. I got the felafel souva, which was fantastic. The bread was so soft and scrumptous that we ordered another serve with some hummus. After two serves of bread, there was no room for Greek doughnuts :( So we'll have to come back for a meat souva and some doughnuts. YUM

Delicious!! As Always!!. So i finally make it to yet another restaurant of Mr C.. Again I am left loving the place!! <br/>Trav, the Head Chef is exceptional and the food was absolutely delicious!! I had the Patris, didn’t realize there was coriander in it, though Travis was on the ball and ensured there was no coriander in my souv, he remembered from Hellenic, that is SERVICE.. <br/>Upon walking in, yes we were a little confused at first on how it all works, however this is why we all have a mouth and you ask someone.. Staff were busy, definitely not overworked, actually just working at a fast pace, that is what they are paid for.. <br/>The kitchen staff were great, we sat at the bar watching the staff, so me being me, I checked them out and watched their every move.. <br/>The FOOD, OHMYGOD!! The Patris was recommended to me and let me say, it certainly didn’t disappoint.. It was DELICIOUS!! I also ordered the Hellenic Slaw which was divine, even if it did have dill in it.. The Dessert, well it was nice, though i prefer the desserts at their other establishment, plus this is a souv place, no place for desserts as far as I am concerned.. Just Beer and Souvs! YUMMMM <br/><br/>The service from Annabelle and the team was great, they were busy but on the ball, they knew who, what, where and when, which is great.. We were even given complimentary fries with feta cheese, which were scrumptious!! <br/><br/>Anyone who may not like the service or wait time is being completely unreasonable and ignorant.. If 20 minutes have gone by and you haven’t been served, why don’t you use that mouth and ask what the holdup is.. We were served quickly and food was out within a reasonable time frame.. <br/><br/>Overall delicious, love the fun, funky, fast, street like environment, and free WIFI!! Atmosphere was great.. It is certainly different to the other restaurants George has, but nonetheless it is definitely up there with them.. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!<br/><br/>The staff as always were Fabulous, and the food was sensational! <br/><br/>We need one in Oakleigh, I can’t keep travelling to Fitzroy, it is too far.. But SOOOOO bloody worth it!!! <br/><br/>Well done yet again Trav, Annabelle and the JG Team!!!<br/><br/>LOVE IT!! Can’t wait to return with all my friends who want to try it, requests are coming through.. A little like when I discovered Hellenic and all my friends wanted to go, with me.. So I was in there monthly if not weekly!!
Natasha J
Tasty, interesting and great flavours, quite greasy but as expected for a souva. Good atmosphere, busy but easy to get your order in. Undecided if I'll go back
Marijana Brekalo
Great souvlakis!!!
Adam Bramdaw
Awesome place, was very busy indeed but the service and efficiency both very good. Tried 3 of the souvos between two of us, perfect quantity. Meat was great, flavour combinations lovely.

One word sums the food - yummy- chicken souvlaki was as good as what you would get in Greece - funky , friendly staff , definitely a place ill b coming back to again & again !

Are we in Greece. Magic, Food, Service.... This place is like being in Greece. Food is so nice. Really cool place. Have to check it out even Greek beers...

Gyrating gyros. Went there on a Tuesday night at 8:30, don't tell my momz<br/><br/>And it was pretty crowded, we got a seat and were looked after straight away so the service was great!<br/>Service : 7/10<br/><br/>We go the Mr.Papdopolous Lamb Gyro & a Chicken Gyro <br/>Both delicious, the lamb was succulent soft not overcooked at all! the chicken was the same. <br/><br/>Gyros 7/10 <br/>The only thing missing was some sort of fresh veg, & I particularly didn't enjoy the sweet onions, but that's how it is. <br/><br/>Price $ - Very cheap will go again!<br/><br/>..get on it.
Foodie16
Great souvas, both chicken and lamb are tender, flavoursome and lean. I don't recommend weekends as is too busy. Go on a Monday and get served super quick.
Mj
Tried Jimmy's today after passing many times on my way to the supermarket but have been put off by the crowd and hipsters when I'm in a rush I was very pleased that our meals were ready in about 5 minutes and it was delicious chips with fetta ill never eat chips any other way now definatley worth a try
Pippo
Went there on a Thursday. Don't get put off how busy it is. They run a great system and move the clientel very quickly with ease. Food was great and so cheap. Love the story behind the name Jimmy Grants about the migrants who came to Melbourne by ship and however there is a huge wall painting of a plane. A ship would have been a better fit considering all the migrants in the 40s and 50s came by ship.
Patto
Good Souva. Friday night 6:00pm and the service was fast. So fast that my souva arrived as I was sitting back down. Tasty food if a little on the small side, but the price is pretty good so if you're starving have two! My Bonegilla could have used a squirt more sauce but other than that I found the food fantastic. I'll be back!
Loz
Yum. Jimmy Grants provides a couple of favourites from Hellenic Republic (tarama, grain salad etc) without the fuss of reservations. For those questioning the size of the souvs and the presence of chips/mustard, you will find that these are all pretty standard in Greece! However I do agree that without lettuce/tomato they are somewhat dry, and it would be nice to choose your own sauces. Overall, a buzzing atmosphere and friendly staff, but you feel slightly awkward when it's busy-not knowing where to sit or stand.
Cam
Terribly managed. pretty good food.. Been there twice now. Food is very nice. Service and organisation is terrible! We waited 40 minutes for two take-away wraps on a Sunday night and 20 minutes the time before. To make matters worse it was not indicated to us that it would take that long when we ordered...40 minutes is a ridiculously long time!!!! Most places will let you know if you have to wait more than 15 minutes! In my experience, if there's a 40 minute wait most places will just send you away.<br/>To make matters worse, this is not a pleasant place to hang around in. It's very crowded and there's really no indication of where you should wait for your take-away order<br/>Furthermore, while we were waiting for our food to arrive they decided to swap and take orders from the bar rather than from the counter labelled 'take-away'. Of course, the waiters made no effort to tell anyone so these people were standing around clueless for 10 minutes until one of them decided to ask.<br/><br/>I eat out with my girlfriend very often (a minimum of 3 nights a week I'd say). When you eat out that often you have your share of bad experiences but this was one of the worst!<br/><br/>The food is nice but if you want a similar environment and price-point opt for Miss Chu, where there's a similar vibe and we've been given free drinks for having to wait just 15 minutes. <br/>If you're after a George Calombaris place I'd highly recommend St Katherines were the service is brilliant and the food is comfortably better (though more expensive) than Jimmy Grants.<br/><br/>The good: food is pretty good and affordable<br/>The bad: TERRIBLE LAYOUT, crowded, TERRIBLY MANAGED, bad service (the staff were clearly being over-worked), numerous amateur mistakes that you wouldn't expect from a professionally-managed establishment, the 'fudge bar' tastes very similar to a mars bar (which is nice but costs $5). <br/>Conclusion: If you do decide to go, ask how long it will be when you order and then go do something else until about when you're order will be ready. I gave it two shots and won't be going back given the huge range of other great food places around. Quite simply, the food isn't even close to nice enough to warrant even risking having to put up with an experience like that.<br/>Advice to the managers: If you are going to maintain the 'wild' environment in this place at least put a manager on the floor to make sure the customers are happy and the staff are doing their job well.
Mophki
We popped in for lunch on a work day. Place was packed so ordered take away and are there once space freed up. Staff were great and very accommodating. Food was fantastic. I had the mixed chicken and lamb souvo and it has to be the best I've had. Everyone was ecstatic with their food including our Vego friend! We will be returning for sure and excited about the up coming delivery option!!

Cheap eat with fast service. From the outside this place looked empty but as soon as you walk in this place was buzzing with people. Cheap and very quick (food came out in less than 5 mins!!). The dough was very soft and not too doughy which I loved and sizing was perfect. Shared the chips but could barely finish it. Little bit more sauce would have done the trick but none the less a tasty and very filling meal.

Great atmosphere.....but George!!!!!! Portion sizes!!!! A masterchef should know better!!

Cheap thrills. Visited for a group catch-up weeknight dinner. We all really enjoyed our souvas. The taramasalata with the chips was also a guilty pleasure. Calombaris taramasalata is the bomb. Also at just over $50 for dinner for four I'll be coming back.

Cheap but ordinary.

What a fizzer! We were hopeful of more but were let down. The shop looks great: very schmick. The food? Not so great. Serving size was fine, I appreciate less is more and a big fat souva is rarely appropriate. The bread was underdone, almost doughy in places and there was little flavour: mint was a distant memory, all I could taste was half cooked chips. Poor, very poor.

Our search for an authentic Souvlaki just like the ones we gorged ourselves on in Greece, took us to JG's. The service was good, chips with fetta were yum BUT honey mustard stuff has no place on ANY souvlaki for me! Yum, but not quite there! :(
Hula Jarmusch
Quite a yummy souva, tender lamb and lovely soft wrap. They do appear a fair bit smaller than your classic souva, but it actually ends up being the perfect amount once you're done. The only thing missing in this modern souva was the freshness that normally comes from the lettuce and tomato, but other that it was really delicious.

Cheap fun and good

Delicious!. Has to be the best souvlaki in town!

Fantastic service and the food was absolutely delicious! Dinner for two - only $23. Highly recommended for take away. Thank you :)

My first experience at Jimmy's was only a few days after it opened and I must say, George, you've done it again! I've tried everything on the menu except for the desserts so far, and it is absolutely PERFECTION!! (Hence why I've now lost count of how many times I've been to Jimmy's haha) <br/>On the other hand, let me just say to all those critical reviews that I was just reading in Urbanspoon stating that they didn't like the mustard or chips inside a souvlaki & that it was weird. Or that they prefer chilli sauce etc... I'm pretty sure you are referring to a kebab. Please understand the BIG difference between a traditional Greek souvlaki and a Turk kebab!! If you ever decide to take your lonely, uneducated butt to Greece, you'll see that George's interpretation of a souvlaki is exactly what you'll taste over there. In Greece, no souv comes without chips inside and mustard is on everything! None of this lettuce, tomato, chilli sauce crap that we have here in Aus. <br/>So, George, my hat goes off to you. One bite of the Nonna Maria, had me reminiscing of Greece and it's glorious flavours. To anyone indecisive of whether to try Jimmy Grants or not - do it!! I promise you, you will not regret it.

Granted. For quality greek food it is pretty cheap ($7.50-9.50 souva, $20 for meat with salad + bread) and delicious. Souvas are a case of quality not quantity. Same price as the competition but far smaller, and arguably tastier (depending on where you go).<br/><br/>If some friends want to go then I am more than happy to come along, multiple times. It's very good at what they've aimed for. However, if I feel like a souva/yiros, I also equally could feel like a kebab (is it racist to consider them basically the same? probably. I mean I get they're different and all but they satisfy the same hunger. anyway-) so I will go to Fitzroy Kebabs on smith/gertrude st because that place effing rules. But for souvas this is ace<br/><br/>Dimmys are also delicious - similar to a Sth Melbourne market one.<br/><br/>I give Jimmy Grants 8/10<br/><br/>PS. we were served by georgey boy himself. good to see him getting involved<br/><br/>EDIT: Alright alright I accept I am unfairly comparing souvas and kebabs which are two distinctly different things. And that this means I am a loner moron who should go to Greece.

Thursday night. Walked in at 7:45. Was busy. Waited at the bar and had a few ale's until our table was ready. Bar staff were great and alco selection was ample to keep us entertained. <br/><br/>Food was great. Simple. Started with some dimmies with soy sauce and olive oil (weird but it works). Standard tasty dimmy though, nothing amazing. <br/><br/>Shared a chicken plate. Chicken cooked perfectly, Tzasiki was great and pita was tasty! Souvo was simple and nice. Lamb was again, lovely. Souvo was the pick of the dishes. Never had one like that bu the mustard and sweet caramelised onions set it off. <br/><br/>Top it off we were waited on by George himself who seemed only too eager to simply do his job, a great experience.

Holy mother of god that was delicious! Had the combo souva and shared the ridiculously tasty grain salad and chips. Can't wait to go back to get the wagon wheel!!

New favourite restuarant for meaty goodness. Jimmy Grants is the first place that has inspired me to write a review after eating there last night. <br/>The location is fantastic off Smith Street (look for the neon blue plus and minus sign) <br/>The food is amazing, the highlight being the pitta wraps, the meat is beautiful, highly recommend the lamb and chicken Bonebella. But the true winner is the chips which are covered in salt, organo and crumbled feta. They also have chips in the souvlakis which is a winner in my book.<br/><br/>Lots of little nooks and crankies with sit-and-eat-where-ever-you can style with breakfast bars and little wooden chairs. That is if you can shimmy your way through the crowd of hipsters, I recommend showering (its the hipsters kryptonite). Definitely get there at 6:30 if you want to get a seat without waiting, but they also do take away. <br/>The fit out is beautiful with a Greek style meets industrial with a stained glass window thrown in for good measure. It's eclectic and somehow just works. My boyfriend will kill me for writing this, but its bloody important to girls! the toilets are clean and my favourite bit is there is a ladies toilet and a unisex toilet so girls don't have to wait :) Ok between you and me that was the selling factor that made me write this review, but tell Glen it was the meat ;)

Un professional. We went to jimmy grants on a cold monday night only to find the place was closed. we had travelled from point cook especially to try it. we had checked the website twice and there was no mention of it being closed for the day. very unprofessional. all was not lost though, we had a great meal at gradi 4oo. also very hard to find, we walked up from brunswick st. twice before asking the florist on the corner. not happy
Ian Paul
Not happy. They could have left a message on their web site stating that they would be closed on Monday,we made the trip from pt cook only to find a note on the door, the other couple that also turned up weren't happy as well,I checked their web site before leaving home, plus could do with a larger sign, had to ask next door where the place was
Belinda
Waited about 40 minutes for a takeaway souvlaki which is ok, I understand everyone wants to try it. The souvlaki was great, really tasty, I love the chips in it. Could have been a bit bigger, it tastes so good you just want more. Will try again when the hype has died down a bit.
Wowwow
Ordered one of everything, overrated. Expensive for what you could get elsewhere for an extra couple of bucks. Unfortunate.

Average Souvlaki. Ordered the lamb souvlaki but found the lamb a bit gamey and the onion chutney a bit different. I didn't particularly like the mustard sauce as there was a strange sweet and sour taste with the onion. The souvlaki also has chips inside the pita which I didn't like and I found the pita very thick and there wasn't a lot of lamb. The serving size is also on the small side. I found myself walking another 300m to Souvlaki KING which I read a review about from Matt Preston and that was Awesome a must try!! Overall, sorry Jimmy but not worth the hype.
Hung Dong Long
My new favourite lunch spot. Good value and good quality food. One souva isn't enough. Two is too much. Better have two

Awesome. So this place opened just over a week ago and it happens to be run by Georgie Calombaris which means it is packed all the time. Went on Tuesday night just after 6 (if you want a seat then arrive early otherwise you'll be waiting). Had the "Mr Papadopoulos" and the "Homer" souva and a bowl of chips - both were wicked but for the souva aficionados out there - these babies are small so order two unless you yourself are a small person, in which case you'll be fine. Guys honestly everything about these Souvlaki's are truly mouth watering. The meat is insanely tender, the bread..oh the bread. I'm pretty sure they make it themselves, its got to be the best tasting pita bread I've had in Melbourne. Do yourself a favour and head on over but word to the wise - order take away or you will be waiting. Enjoy
Bruce Smith
The best souvlaki I've ever had served by the master chef himself. Kinda on the smallish side but so next time I'll just order 2 :)

An amazing little place with the best souvlaki I've ever ever had !!!! Great job George !!

Loved it! Super tender lamb in the souvlaki. Grain salad was a tasty healthy side.
Flopslouise
A must try. We each ordered a chicken and lamb combo souvlaki, shared the Village salad and paid $12 each! It was the best souvlaki I had ever tasted and the salad was fresh and flavoursome. The service was very friendly. Overall a wonderful casual dining experience and exactly what we were after on a Tuesday night. It did get busy so get in early to secure a table, however it's really a walk in walk out type of restaurant. I would say it is designed to be a takeaway /quick dining restaurant. I will definitely be going back!!

Delicious food and amazing service and great atmosphere! So lucky to have Jimmy Grants so close to my work!

Grants the ant's pants!. Delicious, soft & fresh souvas of a decent size. I guarantee you won't go back to the old takeaway shop souvas after eating these! Lamb souva was flaky & an intensely delicious spit roasted taste... The crumbed prawn with honey & cucumber souva was inspiring also! Feta & chips? A combo that's so right! Busy night, but staff did their best to accommodate the never ending flow of patrons... Great ordering system & having George Colombaris himself working the pass and handing out souvas was a great testament to the love put into this place. Took home some 'Greek donuts' (loukoumades) which were slathered in honey & chunky walnuts - just like they should be! A fanciful, Greek takeout for a tiny price. Can't wait to go back!

First day lunch service... What to expect? How could I doubt this professional team? What fun!! The quirky menu, the gorgeous artwork and the yummy food. You must try to Jimmy Dimmys! The testament of the hoards of people doing take away and turn over of tables speak for itself. Well done Travis and staff. Will return to get to dessert!!!

Yummy chicken souva. One of my common gripes with fast food is that the prices are too high and the portions too large. Finally, I can get a moderate meal for a moderate price! <br/>I had the chicken souva (nonna maria) which was $7.50 and just the right amount for a light meal. It had good flavour, lovely bread, and not too salty. Will definitely go back and try more of the menu.

Well worth the trip!!. Great way to end the weekend, a souv at Jimmy Grants.. <br/>Once again you can count on quality and excellence from George Calombaris & Co.<br/>Looking forward to trying out the desert menu on the return trip<br/>Or hubby to grab some take away during the week:-)

Looks Good. Fell upon this place by accident on only it's second night open whilst killing time for a "second sitting" at a fancy-pants place around the corner. As such we only wanted drinks. So I can't comment on the food other than to say that everyone eating there seemed to be having a great time.<br/>Layout, decore and staff are all amazing. Friendly cheeky staff are there to make your trip there enjoyable.<br/>From a drinks-only perspective, one slight wish is that the bar have a broader offering. This will no doubt come with time and as they open longer hours.<br/><br/>Am I returning? Absolutely, as soon as I can!!!
Hasan Muhammad (Hasancito)
Crucial to try. Love their food. our all office team went there to grab souvas.. love their service and food.
Chasing A Plate
My all important first bite was extremely satisfying. I got the perfect mouthful of pillowy, charred bread, succulent, melt in your mouth meat, sweet mustard aioli and a well salted chip. The combination of chicken and lamb was incredible and I loved the moistness of both meats. If I was going to be very picky, I would have liked a wee bit more aioli dotted throughout as it seemed to be concentrated at the top and the bottom of the souva. Otherwise, no complaints whatsoever. TBS scoffed down his Nonna Maria and said he could easily have had a second.<br/>

George Calombaris is widely known in the foodie world. A month or two ago, he added Jimmy Grants  (113 St David Street, Fitzroy): a funky, clean souvlaki joint not at all like the fluoro-lit, greasy, early-morning kebab pitstops you're probably familiar with. Named after the Australian rhyming slang term for 'immigrants', Jimmy Grants gives a cool nod to Australia's immigrant heritage.

Pitas are warm and thick, borderline doughy, but hit the spot when paired with the tender meats.

So my little sister turned 16! As my birthday present to her we hopped on a plane and did a whirlwind food tour of some of Melbourne, and met some amazing people along the way :) Here's my run down of the crazy good food we ate in my favourite place to visit in Australia :) The day before we left I competed in my first ever Crossfit competition as a member of a scaled team. The day was amazing fun and it was such a rush to test my strength, endurance and hang out with some great athletes and overall cool people. I was so exhausted when I went to bed, but oh my did I wake up ravenous (a day full of lifting and intense cardio will do that to a girl) so first on the agenda was breakfast and coffee at Adelaide Airport. My sister, being the 16 year old she had just become, opted for *cough* Hungry Jacks... I on the other hand went with a bacon, cheese, tomato toastie and an Irish creme coffee from Hudsons. The coffee was pretty decent and the cheese toasty, although nothing special certainly hit the spot, plenty of cheese firm tomato and salty bacon.. pretty hard to mess up a toasted sandwich though.  Now.. given this was a celebration holiday no macros were counted... and as such bressert was required and Holy Glaze Donut company supplied the goods before we boarded. My insulin spike of choice? A white choc raspberry jam filled donut... soft fluffy dough, sweet gooey jam and a soft white choc coating I have to admit this place does a better job then another well known donut chain.

Naturally, I had some pre-conceived ideas but I can say that it was not at all what I expected. A throwback to the name prescribed to Mediterranean immigrants back in a time of mass movement, the restaurant sits on a little side street off Smith St. My first assumption was abolished immediately. The small, understated shop front is a stark contrast to St Katherine’s and Gazi, who sit loud and proud on Cotham Rd and Flinders St respectively. It was only the small crowd of people and a smal

Jimmy Grants is an informal, order-at-the-counter, modern and refurnished place, with friendly staff and tiny tables. We chose to order three of their souvlakis as we had already tried the salads and donuts at Hellenic Republic. The three souvas, nicely wrapped - portions may appear small but they are adequate. Mr Papadopoulos ($8) - Lamb, mustard aioli, chips, onions, parsley I loved the tender lamb meat which was full of flavour, and not too fatty. The chips were crisp and lightly seasoned with salt and herbs, and the aioli tied the components together. The pita bread was fluffy, airy and very fresh. The Patris ($9.5) - Prawns, attiki honey, mayo, cucumber, mint, coriander I got a bite of this one, and it was quite light for a souvlaki. The prawns had a nice batter and the use of herbs added a fresh punch to the ove

Jimmy Grant’s isn’t ground breaking, with many of the menu options being those that have been on the Hellenic Republic menu for years. Is this a bad thing? No. Souvlakis, dips, roasted meats etc are all very tasty and priced very well.
Confessions Of A Little Piggy
This was ridiculously delicious. The pita bread was warm, pillowy and super soft.  Both the chicken and lamb were tender, moist and absolutely moreish - with the right ratio of fats too. Wrap that all up with crunchy chips, onion, parsley and mustard aioli and you have the best souvlaki ever.

I visited Jimmy Grants during a day off during lunchtime as I had heard about their souvas. Jimmy Grants is the latest opening from the Made Establishment group – which also consist of Gazi, Mama Baba, St Katherine’s and HellenicRepublic and headed up by none other than Greek King George Calombaris. It is located in just off Smith Street in Fitzroy. There are more stores planned to open with one in CBD and one in Ormond. Another focus in the future is also to have a delivery service. The name comes from the rhyming slang name for the Greek, Italian and Middle Eastern immigrants to Melbourne and pays homage to them in the naming of dishes. For example the Patris is named after the migrant ship that carried assisted migrants from Europe to Australia – and is souva which comprises of prawns, attiki honey, mayonnaise, cucumber, mint and coriander. Yum! Jimmy Grants has a very short and concise menu which consists of souvas, rotisserie meats, salads, sides and of c

Jimmy Grants is the latest opening from the Made Establishment group (Gazi, Mama Baba, St Katherine’s, Hellenic Republic), bringing casual Greek food to Smith Street (well just off Smith Street).Jimmy Grants aims to deliver quick and easy Greek food with minimal fuss, and expense, and it delivers. This is not about a reinvention of a cuisine or the Melbourne dining scene, but serving simple, tasty food to eat in or takeaway.

Featuring some of the best souvlaki’s outside of Greece, including the delicious bonegilla which is perfect if you are indecisive like me, as it offers spit roasted chicken and lamb with parsley, chips and that signature mustard aioli all wrapped up in freshly baked pita.
Miss Sage Sugar
We studied the menu and I decided to have ‘The Patris ($9.80) - prawns, honey, mayo, cucumber, mint, and coriander’ and my dining companion picked the ‘Nonna Maria ($8.50) - chicken, mustard aioli, chips, onion, and parsley’.

Located off the Main Street of Collingwood’s main drag is George Colombaris’ Jimmy Grants.  The street side is faily non cognito except for the +- sign up there.  So they serve up yummy modern souvas which probably the best damn souvalkis we’ve ever had. It really is. The best.

Jimmy Grants is a modern style souvlaki bar off Smith Street. Owned by George Calombari, this is old-fashioned Greek cooking at its best. Think succulent souvas, oregano and garlic seasoned fries and sweet treats from Burch and Purchese. I’m getting hungry just writing about it.

Jimmy Grant’s rides the new wave of casual dining restaurants that Melbournian’s have become increasingly fond of recently and with celebrity chef George Calombaris’s reputation behind this place you are sure to find great food, a trendy atmosphere and, well… long queue’s if you don’t time yourself correctly.

Personally I thought the souvas were tasty, filling and good value for money. I’ve heard the chips are amazing too, so I must go back and try them.

On a lazy Sunday afternoon with a hungry tummy, I found myself in front of Jimmy Grants. This is a place that has been on my "must visit" list for a long time. Jimmy Grants is similar to Gazi but much more informal, with a less spacious venue (think side lane, funky music and pumping out lots of soulvas) and a smaller menu offering. To start we got the famous Jimmy's Dimmy. I was quite interested to see George's version of dim sims. I'm normally not a very big dim sim fan. My parents operated a catering/take away store for most of my childhood. Hence in my eyes, my dad's dim sims were always the best. A lot of people claim that South Melbourne dim sims are delicious but I still find them too heavy handed in MSG and pepper. I was expecting to be disappointed but surprisingly I found myself reaching for a second dim sim. The skin was thin and the filling was juicy with good cabbage/meat ratio. D and I each got a souvla each. D went with the patris soulva which has a filling of prawns, ho

The food here struck me as very similar to Gazi, just marketed in a different way. So in a way, it kinda lost of a bit of the ol' razzle dazzle and novelty value.

A couple of months ago, I started hearing a lot about ‘Jimmy Grants’. No clue who it was and what it was but all I knew was I had to go visit! Turns out Jimmy Grant is one of George Calombaris new ventures, an afford fast-food joint serving fresh salads and Souvalakis. I also found it very interesting how they came up with the name, on their website they said “Whether you were from Greece, Italy or the Middle East, we were all called ‘Jimmy Grant’. And I can kind of relate to that because my teachers always thought I was related to another ‘Wong’. Jimmy Grants Joining other eateries in Fitzroy the restaurant is located on Saint David Street, one of the side streets off Smith St. I visited a couple of weeks ago with fellow bloggers Libby and David  It’s quite easy to miss Jimmy Grants because it doesn’t really have a large sign, but just remember the large blue neon plus and minus sign then you’re at the right place. I also found it amusing where the sticker says ‘Touch Jimmy to open do
The World Loves Melbourne
The menu at Jimmy Grants appeals with souvalakis and more souvas. We ordered the Mr Papadopoulos with lamb, mustard aoli, chips, onions and parsley. The lamb was slow cooked to perfection, just like Gazi. But the aoli seemed different and was absolutely delicious. Also compelling was the flatbread. Possibly the best souvas in Melbourne!

Jimmy Grants is set up for casual dining and takeaway. The best seats would have to be at the counter bar with a view through barred windows into the galley-style kitchen where chef Travis McAuley oversees an efficient operation; meats roasting on the spit, the deep fryer on the go for golden fries and plump loukoumades, souvas expertly wrapped and delivered via the pass or through a bi-fold window, food truck style.

Located off Smith st in trendy Fitzroy, Jimmy Grants is the newest love child of super celebrity Chef George Calombaris. In a nut shell its a trendy souvlaki restaurant. Who thought souvlaki would ever be trendy? Well it is now. I have to say, it's a small space but they seem to make good use of it, with high stools and benches and a little outdoor area. You can watch them make the food from the benches which is an added bonus if you are anything like me and enjoy every aspect to food other than just eating it. I have to say, the food was nice, but nothing spectacular. Afterall, how much can you expect realistically from good old souvlaki. I have to say, it didn't have that fatty/greasy taste that most souvlaki places are known for. I could really appreciate the effort they put into making it feel like more than just another souvlaki place.  I loved the fresh made bread and the slow cooked lamb. It's all in the details. The only negative I really have to add is unfortunately our order
Theycallmemaggie
The fresh prawns were coated in a delicate batter and dressed in a creamy aioli. There was a great contrast between the fresh cucumber, bursts of coriander and parsley, and the cream mayo, with all elements giving rise to an explosion of flavours.
The Hungry Excavator
Could not fault it one bit and I was just surprised by how much I liked it the first time. Then, surprised again by how spot on it was the second time too. Surprising that the best dimmys is from a Greek restaurant, but respectably so.
Peach-Water
I confess. I am a George Calombaris fan. I was so happy when I heard about Jimmy Grants opening – more George food at an affordable price without burning a hole in my wallet! About 2 months ago (I know – huge backlog happening here still), I had to make a trip to Collingwood, so Ting Tangy and I decided to make a stop at Jimmy Grants for lunch. After we made ourselves comfortable at our table, we were given a little order pad to tick our choices before handing the sheet of paper over to the girl to process the order. It wasn’t long after before our food arrived. If there’s a MUST order item on the menu, I would have to say Jimmy Grant’s Chips. They’re probably the best chips I’ve had. The garlic oil was subtle in taste – not enough to give you garlic breath or ward off vampires (not the sparkly...

I freaking love the place, especially their lemony chicken Nonna Maria souvlaki. I’m Greek and I think it’s good, so you can take my word for it!

Once a worker’s cottage built in the 1800s and more recently Peter Watson's spice shop, Jimmy Grants is now Masterchef George Calombaris’ cheap eats destination. Along with business partner George Sykiotis, these Jimmy Grants are taking the humble souva to a whole new level.  The name has been pinched from the slang term thrust upon European migrants during the ‘50s and ‘60s. Jimmy Grants is a funny little space. There’s not much room, only 36 seats. Some line the bar and kitchen, others take up the front of the shop, and a couple are wedged outside in a tight outdoor area.  The open kitchen takes up most of the room and overlooks a long bar serving Greek beer and other beverages. Blue and white tiles are a nod to typical Greek kitchens, and this one is in the more than capable hands of Hellenic Republic’s Travis Mcauley. A mural of an aeroplane looks over chatty diner

...I settled for the Mr. Papadopoulos (a souva with lamb, mustard aioli, chips, onions and parsley) and my date went with the Nonna Maria (a souva with chicken, mustard aioli, chips, onions and parsley). The souvas, as promised, were an authentic mix of flavors and textures, which I devoured in about 4 seconds.

Jimmy Grants – a general name awarded to the immigrants looking for work at the docks in the 50′s, the menu shares the story of Mr Papdopoulis and his famed ‘lamb soave’ in Athens – so succulent due to strapping the pot to his bike and riding over the potholes to produce fall off the bone lamb!! Have to try that one when I get a bike!! GC’s latest – a simple souvlaki shop! The old Peter Watson Spice Shop just off hipster Smith Street is simply sign posted with a neon blue cross and a ‘touch me’ sliding door into an easy going space with focus on the kitchen and smells wafting of slow roasted lamb and souflaki filling the space. We manage to snaffle a table near the man himself – looking very trim, if that’s what a diet of souflakis result in sign me up!!! We are on a time limit so we swiftly order up at the counter – dips, salad, bread, lamb, chips! Done!! Consistently good, lightning fast and reasonably priced, it ticks all the boxes. The grain salad is a must-have. One of the best souvlakis in town. The pita bread is a stand-out. Sweet And Sour Fork
I couldn’t keep my grabby hands away from the Chips, Garlic Oil, Feta, Oregano ($6). It’s just a regular (albeit golden, crisp and fluffy) plate of chips, but top it off with a scattering of feta and oregano, and the result is pure magic. Chips are great, but chips interspersed with creamy hunks of herbed feta are even better.
Melbourne Food Files
Calombaris has jumped on the casual dining trend sweeping Melbourne currently, going back to his roots to open this tiny, glorified fast food joint at the start of August. Jimmy Grants (rhyming slang for immigrants) may be small but the crowd isn’t. Even on a Thursday night you will struggle to get a table for more than 2 at peak hour. The friendly and efficient waitstaff deserve a mention, as they do well to cope with the crowds. It’s loud, lively and full on, so don’t go taking your grandmother expecting an incredible dining experience. It’s more of an after-work-with-a-light-dinner type place. It’s fully licensed so make sure you order one of their Greek beers to go with your souvlaki (the Fix Hellas is good). The foods also good – the menu focuses mainly on souvlakis aka souvas with unique take
A Food Story
Situated in a fairly nondescript building just off Smith Street in Fitzroy you could easily walk right by it and be none the wiser. And now the humble Souvalaki is the new fast food on the block with Jimmy Grants serving up this Mediterranean staple as the latest addition to Hall of "foods that have been around for yonks but is now hip again" (much like 80's fashion hey!) I once worked with a Dr Pappapoulos who was one of the nicest doctors I have worked with, and he taught me lots.   Hubby tried the Mr Pappadopoulos ($9) which was one of e new hot dogs, and the nicest souvalakis we've had.  The flavour is subtle and the lamb is gorgeous and it tasted like a lovely meal from home, rather than the overly salty, heavily spicy   The kicker of cour

...the souvas (aka kebab) comes stuffed with a few chips but the real winner for me was the grain salad - LOVED this so much! The salad was a medley of grains and lentils with toasted almonds, Spanish onion and parsley mixed through. The dressing was probably a mix of lemon and olive oil -- but so much better. And a fat dollop of Greek yoghurt on top was the icing on the cake for me.

Mr Papadopoulos is just as good as I remembered, the warm round of fluffy pita bread wrapped tightly around fatty slices of lamb souvlaki, hot chips and salad. If you ever needed proof that good things come in small packages, this would be it.
Petit Miamx
Souvlakis are a staple food for any night involving a lot of alcohol; nothing better than an inordinate amount of bad-breath inducing garlic and tangy chilli sauce slathered throughout a mishmash of greasy meat and limp lettuce. In the inebriated state of mind, it is remarkably good and although you may be left feeling queasy with all that greasy fare sitting on a bubble of alcohol, you can't help but crave another souvlaki when the onset of another big night occurs. At the other end of the spectrum, Jimmy Grants in Collingwood brings a marginally more refined version, albeit in a very casual and funky setting, featuring their soft, pillowy pita bread with a variety of fillings and, my favourite addition of all, crispy chips. I had the pleasure of having a few of these wonderful souvlakis a few years ago - the "Hellenic Republic" open lamb souvlaki which featured at the Taste of Melbourne festival in The Press Club's stand. Ever since then, my heart has been set on that souvlaki I had

... I love, love, loved the thick and fluffy bread! From our spots looking into the kitchen, we could see them grilling the pitas and it made me so hungry! I had the Bonegilla (lamb and chicken combo), and Sandra had the Nonna Maria (just chicken), and both were excellent. The meat was charred and juicy, with just the right amount of sauce added - no messy drips and sticky fingers here! And, most importantly for me, the souvas had chips in them. Extra fried carbs? Yes please. (They were also the type of chips I like - medium thickness and slightly soggy. Perfect.)

... I would imagine Jimmy Grants is an extension of this new approach, offering tasty and affordable souvlakis, for eat in or takeaway, in a casual and relaxed environment (with a touch of hipster, let's all be honest here).

What drew me here was the souva, that hot roll of pita lovingly stuffed with meat, onion, fries and mayo. I first fell in love with them in Santorini many years ago; a corner joint on the main drag that attracted the hoards.

You’re probably wondering why the name of the place doesn’t sound, well, woggy. Put simply, Jimmy Grants rhymes with ‘immigrants’ and the whole point of this restaurant to celebrate all that is awesome about the immigrants that make up Melbourne today. And in George’s case, he does it with souvlaki.

I’ve been back twice already to Jimmy Grants because the souvlakis here are so addictive. They even taste good when eaten sober in broad daylight rather than the typical souva eating time of 1am in the morning while super drunk.
