Review Bar Liberty - Fitzroy

Fitzroy Forager
Great night with amazing food & wine - the set menu was perfect and the snapper & steak within that were the highlights. Dark horse was the cabbage dish which was beautiful Be aware, the reason for the 3 stars was the awkward & cheeky way they take payment & tip. Their eftpos machine makes it hard to not choose a tip option & the staff watches over your shoulder as you pay. Also charged us for sparkling water even though we didn’t ask for it. Probably would’ve tipped anyway but the way they go about it leaves a bad taste in your mouth…

Great wine selection. Great service. And the food, satisfied with every single dish we ordered. Will definitely come back.

Amazing value with the set menu. Well done with the pork chop - both succulent and flavour. I would've giving more stars if I liked eating vegetables

Was really happy that there were so many vegan options when I asked, but slightly disappointed that 3/4 options for the entire/mains were so oily. Still a great dining experience, if not a little loud at times because we were so squashed. Definitely will come back!

A hidden gem in Collingwood that will pleasantly surprise you as it looks like a bar but is actually a fine dining restaurant that not many know about. Well priced and excellent service as always means I will be back again & again!

My partner and I booked our anniversary date night here on June 26th after a recommendation of my close friend. We had the set menu as well as fresh oysters and we were so impressed! All of our dishes came out at perfectly timed intervals and all plated so delicately. Our favourites included the Pickled cucumber, Raw beef with walnuts, and Baby Barramundi with kohlrabi. Our wait staff for the night were very quick to attend to our wine top ups :-)

Had an absolute blast at Bar Liberty. So many flavors.. I had many favorites and could’ve kept eating.

From start to finish, wonderful execution of the food. And service was impeccable. 2nd night out of lockdown but you wouldn’t know it, this place operates like an extremely well oiled machine. Creative menu. We had the set menu which started off with delicious snacks - the torched kingfish was blow your mind good. Great balance of flavours. Moving onto the entrees - the venison tartare and soft curd were beautifully presented and were absolute winners as well. Unfortunately the let down came with the main - the steak and potatoes were very salty (and I love my salt!). Steak was also over cooked for me - medium to well done. But happily it ended on a high, just as it started, with the delicious dessert of date cake and clove custard. Service was faultless.

The food was faultless, the service was great and the wine menu was sensational. Highly recommend this little gem.

My go to bar in Melbs when visiting from Sydney. Briney Bay is my fave cocktail in Aus. 💖

Great bar, staff, drinks and the food is delicious!

This was really a 3.5. we had a lovely waiter, great wines, but the food just didn't wow me, especially for the price. Also, we had a vegetarian on the table and they arranged some vegetarian options for her but they just seemed really lazy - eg using the same sauces that came out on other meals that she was served. I think for the price she deserved a bit more effort

Recommended by a Melbourne local to give this place a try. And am I glad she did! This little gem offers an amazing menu. Recommended anyone travelling to Melbourne to make this place a priority.

Tried out Bar Liberty in Friday with high expectations, and must say I’m quite disappointed. We sat at the table near the door and the service was very lacklustre- the waiter rarely came for drinks orders and we had to go out and flag him down at least twice. They had run out of oysters, two bottles of wine we picked and several of the dishes just didn’t wow me. Though the bread and butter was very good. With plenty of quality dining nearby I wont be back.

This is my first ever review for a restaurant. It takes every fiber of my body to not be a cliche and write “I never write reviews but.....”. But alas, let us begin. We started with fried bread, it was fine. Hard to stuff up and was probably the best thing we had. Next came the potato crisp with mussel dip. I’m still searching for the mussel flavor anywhere in the dish. As for the potato crisp, I would at least expect them to use Red Rock over Smiths if they are just going to purchase off the shelf. Raw beef was fine. The cacio e pepe was as salty as the Dead Sea but the tongue acclimatizes fairly quickly in these situations. If it was an Asian restaurant I’m sure diners would be complaining of an “msg headache”. Next came the pork which resembled the bagged pork from woolies in taste and texture. The waiter informed me it was “dehydrated” which I guess in these situations is code for ham. The potatoes were swimming in mayo - thank goodness for the nori on top. Wine pours were stingy but the selection is good. Pretty disappointed as we had been excited to come eat here for some time. Would not come back besides to grab a quick drink.

We came in and the staff was friendly on the door, we been ask if we have reservation and than he accomodate us on the table. All good until the waitress look after us, no one told us what was a cured meat of the day and obviously was something full of fat that I cannot even taste no prosciutto no salami 6 slices of capocollo the most fat culatello I ever seen in my life. Anyway no bread with this salumi ! We ask for it and she sent us a focaccia extra charge for $7 no drama was alright but obviously they have bread because we saw next our table. I asked for a wine she gave me the expensive one even if I point the different one on the list. No drama again. Fish was okay, steak I didn’t like personally she even ask how to cook it. Salad over salt with too much mayo condiments. We were expecting much better than that to be honest. Basically will never return for sure.<br/>Quite expensive $159 by two.

Very high salt usage in the food, almost inedible. Whatever you do don’t book the early sitting for dinner as the staff harass you constantly until you move on - from the moment we arrived we felt rushed - not a good experience. Setting and local is excellent but chef has lost his salt sensitivity- big time!!

Don’t let the spray painted sign out the front deceive you. It’s now a wonderful wine bar. I must say I embarrassed myself. They said if you can give the table back by 8:30 we could have a seat. I heard they didn’t have a table until 8:30! We walked out and when I was informed of my hearing problem we came right back. <br/><br/>The highlight of course, is the wine list. The best thing is the “surprise me” wine by the glass. It’s actually just a way for them to give you something to match your food with and try something different. I didn’t get the impression they were trying to get rid of the bin ends. Beyond that, the wine list is pricey, but extensive. The waitress was most pleasant and a delight to chat to. <br/><br/>The low light, is literally, the low light. There isn’t much light inside!<br/><br/>Food wise, they have a few dishes that I’m guessing rotate. For entree we had the buratta. Highly recommended. It was very nicely presented. The other dishes we had was sunchokes (aka artichokes), green salad and the short rib. My only complaint is that while everything tasted fantastic, there wasn’t a whole lot of meat on the short rib. It was about 4 pieces of meat, and then two other chunks of mostly fat. <br/><br/>So a good little neighbourhood find. Again not cheap and not a daily diner, but a good place for a nice dinner without going OTT.<br/>

Best service, wine list, service & atmosphere (retro tunes). Unpretentious and enjoyable. Please don’t go because I want it all to myself. Don’t forget to try the aged Comte at the end!

We came here for some food and drinks after work on a Thursday evening. We didn't have a reservation but were seated immediately. We ordered the mussel dip, bucatini and xo pipis to share. The food was refined but not lacking in flavour. I thoroughly enjoyed the food at Bar Liberty and the service was efficient too. They also have a nice selection of wines.

Nice little place with some good wines. We chose the set menu for 2 but had already had the flatbread to start with which was really good! The courses we had were potatoe crisp, cured scallop, beef tartare, peppery and cheesed pasta, baramundi and a pannacotta with crunchy grains.Overall the flavours are really good, plating is very simple but nice. We both think it is overpriced: for $60 pp you'd expect more. All the dishes were really small (as you share everything). When we left we were both still hungry and if we chose all the courses we had from the a la carte it would have been cheaper.....Would go back for a couple of wines and some food at the bar but not for dinner.

Bar Liberty is my favourite wine bar in Melbourne. A sophisticated wine list complimented by a seasonal menu by a culinary master known as Casey Wall. Truth be told I've never had a bad dish at this venue after numerous ammounts of visits. Unlike other wine bars around town, they really don't miss a step.

Sunday lunches here are pretty neat, good value for money. It usually starts off with really good sourdough bread with charcuterie, snacks, mains then finished off with dessert. Highly recommend!

Great food, great service and good ambience. <br/>The the tempura vegetables scallops and the beef were all exceptional out of a huge selection of dishes we had that were all excellent.<br/><br/>The wines and spirits were fantastic and worth indulging on, with experienced knowledge providing great pairing advice. <br/><br/>Only let down was the time between entries and mains, but honestly we didn't care. <br/><br/>Don't be fooled with casual decore and dress of staff. The food is what you are there for.

Bar Liberty doesnt stop to amaze. Beautiful wine list combined with easy super tasty food.<br/>Go on Sunday lunch! 8 dishes for $45. So much value! No better place to go to with friends for an easy boozy lunch on Sunday.

The experience I had in Bar Liberty was nice. The space was actually quite small, around 4-5 tables? So it was cozy. You would be surrounded by hundreds of wine bottles, enticing yourself to order something to drink. The wine selection was good, there are bottles from different places in the world aside from Australian ones. The food was creative and good. My favorite was sourdough flat bread and homemade butter. However, every dishes we got were on point. The flavors were interesting, captivating. One negative point for me was the food was a bit over-salted - personal taste. I need to add that it is a tapas, serving type of bar so do come with friends. There were long gaps between dishes, I didn’t like that as I was very hungry. However, it would be a nice time to chat and drink if you have company since this is a bar after all.

Bar Liberty doesn’t take itself too seriously, judging by the word ‘liberty’ spray painted over the old signage, or maybe this is a sign that it takes itself too seriously – it’s hard to distinguish the difference in Melbourne.

Simple dishes with the occasional interesting flair. Every dish was really well done with great presentation. Service was friendly and attentive. Venue has an intimate feel with neighbourhood charm. Couldn't find a fault.

Where do I even begin? It's one of my best food and WINE experiences !! I have been now converted to drinking only natural wines as it doesn't give you that crazy head buzz to the point of throwing up. The sommelier was so knowledgable- as though she wrote a thesis about the items available at Bar Liberty. <br/><br/>My favourite dishes were- the Burrata with caramelised garlic & black sesame sauce, the beef short ribs with white radish, the broccoli with buckwheat- felt like there were meatfloss but it's actually vegetarian! That's how good it was. The beef tartare with crispy polenta chips were also a standout.<br/><br/>By the way, Best naturally made Pinot noir that I've ever had : Susucaru by frank cornillessen (south Italy in mt Edna)<br/>Thank u to my friend from Paris who brought us here!

There's no other place to turn to when craving an intimate, delicious meal with incredible wine. There's just something so cosy and comfortable here and the food has you salivating for days afterward.

So much yes! Fabulous wine and the food was divine!! I would recommend the S&P Veg, burrata, tartare. The pippies were nice but not as good as the other bites we had. Already planning out what to order when I go back next....

I like it here. The markup on wine grates on me a bit, but at the end of the day it's the only venue close to home who's serving what I want to drink.

Laidback vibes, with super friendly staff. A little overpriced, but the atmosphere and hospitality make up for it. Definitely worth a little vino and nibble.

Lovely night. Started with a few relaxed drinks in the courtyard at drinkwell before heading inside for dinner. The food is designed to share. The calamari was salty but delicious. I'm also glad we ordered the risoni and side of zucchini- very tasty! I probably wouldn't order the pork again- a little chewy. Will return.

Awesome. Great food, great wine, great service, great atmosphere. <br/><br/>Would definitely return. There was so much attention to detail in each dish I could not fault a single element. I also found it be extremely well priced, and the staff knowledgeable and accommodating.

Had lunch here on Sunday, $45 for a set menu. It was faultless, everything was delicious and different to anything i've had elsewhere. We all commented afterwards that its great value for money considering how amazing the food, wine and service is. Loved it.

We sought shelter last night chez Bar Liberty where we enjoyed a corner table and a leisurely meal to kick off the long weekend. I enjoy a house gin and tonic as it changes regularly and it's always made so well with one big ice cube and a lime wedge and Steve usually selects a beer from the extensive list. The last couple of times we've only been in for a drink and always pledge to return for food so last night, food was on the agenda!

GO TO THIS PLACE!! The team here clearly are leaders of their industry with food, wine & service being top class. Very impressed with how last nights' evening went and how well we were looked after. Flawless in my opinion.

Pretty good service, a great wine bar ambiance, and freaken awesome food. The GLT (think crispy chicken skin) is amazing and a must order. The hanger steak was just as fantastic. Definitely plan to return and try some more dishes. Great beer and wine too!

No. Seriously. This is good. These people like food, and interesting wine and they are keen to share that stuff with you. And they do that without condescension, which is a bonus right? Nice.

Bar Liberty Fitzroy is the brainchild between Banjo Harris Plane (ex-Attica), Michael Bascetta (both ex-Attica), Casey Wall (Rockwell & Sons) and Manu Potoi (Rockwell & Sons). An impressive and diverse background that had a lot of people wondering what the result was going to be.

Lovely little place set up in an old house. Not too noisy or crowded and the food was fresh. A lot of thought has gone into making it a very unique experience.

Really relaxed but polished bar set in an old house. We sat in the back room which had about 6 small tables. The menu had a lot of unknowns so this is a great place for trying things out of the ordinary. We had two small and three share dishes. The salt and pepper vegetables, sounding so plain on paper, were an absolute knockout. The vegetables were deep fried in the most amazingly light and crispy batter (tempura taken up five notches!) with a salty kick, while the vegetable housed inside was still fresh and tasty. Surprisingly brilliant dish! Almost everything else was really nice and also so beautifully presented. I found the flavours to be more subtle than bold. The service was excellent.

I loved Bar Liberty. <br/>The staff and ambiance is awesome, it's a warm, happening place that isn't over crowded or loud. <br/>The food was really tasty, I would highly recommend the tomato dish, the raw beef, and the pork, those dishes were my favourites, though to be honest I loved everything I had.<br/>The sour beer was also also very nice.<br/><br/>I will definitely be returning soon.

Lovely little place. Cosy. Staff welcoming and informative. I like how the chefs serve the dishes. Steak is fantastic. As are the potatoes with chilli. Great wine list. Overall well worth a visit and refreshing to see something a bit different.
