Ive never heard of this place until I was invited for dinner recently. What a surprise! Food was amazing and really encompasses the best part of Italian cuisine. Cosy and homely, you feel like part of the family. Wait staff were knowledgeable and friendly, they barely stopped all night. Wood fired Pizzas and tasty mains. My only regret is that I didn't discover this place sooner.

My grandson and I were made to feel so very special. The food was so amazing. My grandson is very particular on what he eats and could not wipe the smile off of his face. Highly recommended by us. Thank you for a good time and a good feed.

A little gem in the middle of Fitzroy! I have always enjoyed eating here, the atmosphere is always lively and usually quite full weekend evenings, the staff are always the most friendly and helpful with choosing from a compact but great menu! Service is relatively quick and the food has always tasted great whatever I had ordered. If I'm nitpicking here then the only thing I would say is perhaps increase the portions a little bit but that might be because I'm a big eater ;)

Went in just before close and was treated poorly with a huge side of attitude. It’s a shame because they had a lot of unsold pasta that I was willing to pay good money for had they not been so unprofessional. Walked out empty handed.

Excellent food and service worth a bite if your in the area

Very average food. The lamb shoulder in particular was tough and dry, the opposite of what slow cooked meat should be. Stick to the pizza which is decent if unremarkable.

Best Italian good with soul going around. From the moment you walk in to the smell of the open fire place, the kitchen full of activity, staff friendly and open to suggestions. Only advice is make sure you don’t eat before to fit all the food in. From the snapper cooked in the wood fired oven to the devin tiramisu. I’ll be going back and taking more friends. Keep the good work up.

Love this place and have been a number of times now, dropped in on a Sunday night and wasn't disappointed. The great thing about this place is its consistently great. When you want a homely rustic feed of Italian it can't be beaten. The seafood spaghetti baked in a bag delicious. Went with a party of 5 and no one was disappointed and no one went home hungry, serves are generous. The service is friendly and efficient. A favourite and we'll be back. Thanks Mamma Vittoria.

A wonderful experience. Loved the food and the waiter was an absolute gentleman. The ambience was really nice as well. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and definitely worth travelling for.

This has to be up there with the best Italian food in Fitzroy. Really love the pastas in particular. Great service too. Thank you for a great meal.

The food we ordered from Mamma Vittoria's had a good balance of pros and cons I guess. We selected the seafood spaghetti and the lamb and pistachio poplette spaghetti. The seafood was my favourite of these, pretty tasty with its olive oil base, generous seafood and dash of tomato. The poplettes were decent, but also on the dry side and the tomato based sauce became gluggy quite quickly. Admittedly, this could possibly have been because it was not eaten completely fresh (ordered through Uber Eats). The caprese stack was our side for the night, and while it tasted good, it only came with three slices of tomato and 3 slabs of mozzarella. Defs needed more tomato at least, and prob needed to be $7 or $8 rather than $9. Overall, was happy with my choice to order in, could have been picked worse, and the menu options were the best around for the price.

Great experience!
The service and ambience made us feel as if we were in Italy. We got a table right next to the fire place and were served by a very friendly Italian waitor.
The food was great. Home made pasta and pizza were fantastic.
Can't wait to return to Mamma Vittorias for dinner

The best pizza in Melbourne! They also make a delicious aperol spritz and the gnocchi is incredible. Very friendly and welcoming staff top off a lovely dinner.

We had take away - ordered through UberEATS. The chips were soggy - delivered in a tinfoil tray wrapped in clinwrap. The gnocchi with lamb - 3 small pieces of lamb and a whole tomatoes .

The entrees were not fresh . First time and not impressed.

An enjoyable evening but some of the dishes missed the mark. The pizzas were surprisingly tasty but my carbonara was too creamy and heavy. Would give it another go for a simple family night out.

When I was forced to spend my days in this area I would sometimes have lunch here so I have only been to the shop on the eastern side of Smith Street, I'd have no idea bout the actual restaurant. Its been around for ages and it also sells ready made food to cook at home which looks authentic and delicious but I don't buy it as I rarely cook and if I do I'm probably going to use Dolmio pasta sauce because subconsciously I don't feel worthy of the good stuff. I think I feel the same way about champagne but I just tell people I don't like the taste and drink Carlton Draught instead as it makes me feel less poofy. I'm allowed to appropriate insulting slang for homosexuals and I like the word poof anyway so don't you tell me how to label myself thanks very much. I'm sure you wouldn't moderate an indigenous person and I have a dash of that too but I don't look authentically Tasmania Aboriginal so I can't cash in on that level of high grade disadvantage and the joys of being super marginalized.

Anyway you go there and there's usually a choice of 3 or 4 pastas in a bain-marie (but its not like a poor persons food court bain-marie ) and you can have more than one type of pasta on a small or a large plate but they're not far off the same size. I'd recommend a small as you get free bread and I've never left here without feeling like I'm either going to explode or start rolling down the street into oncoming traffic, which is a nightmare as I refuse to die in Fitzroy or Collingwood as these days they're both comparable to hell on earth. I always seem to choose a creamy pasta sauce which is probably half the problem but they're always so delicious and I can always throw it up later or run "The Tan" 35 times on the weekend as one needs to look good and feel desirable... and I'm a man. Italian food must be a nightmare for the ladies.

Mama Vittoria is also worth a visit for the interesting customer service. The staff are always lovely but there's one lady (you'll know her when you meet her) who seems to be in a permanent foul mood so I'd say her family owns the business otherwise she'd get fired. But her rudeness is unpretentious, you start enjoying her lack of interest in your dining experience and she grows on you and it's all a bit like a dodgy relationship where you love someone who treats you like rubbish. And who says hospitality types need to be friendly anyway... This isn't America (thank god) and I'd much rather get served by a grump than a vacuous latte barista but we're all conditioned from day one to be fake so what can you do? I'm just glad I'm not working in customer service and I empathise with anyone who has to serve locals in the inner north.
Great food for 4 of us. Service was way up there as well. In a non trendy but family friendly environment. Would definitely recommend if you want warming hearty and delicious Italian food with a smile

whenever we are stuck for thought about where to go, we hit this place up.

The atmosphere is always great. Staff are always great and food is always consistently good.

Service was great, food was great. The carbonara was a little heavy for my like as I like it more traditional with no cream. Seafood pasta was fab. Definitely will be back to taste more of the menu.

We've been going to Mamma Vittoria's restaurant (and across the street - their lunch outlet-picture attached) for a few years now and always found it would hit the spot. They have a family-style approach - so order an entree - share that, order a pasta - share that, pizza - share that. Or you can simply just order what you want and have it all to yourself. Their portions of salads, chips, and some pastas are generous, but sometime their filled pastas etc can be smaller than
expected.

They also have the best priced negroni around this area (i think its around $10 or $12), so when your used to paying $18, its a bargain. Wine by the glass is also always great.

Although their decor may be a bit of an older style and the restaurant doesn't look like its pumping, i wouldn't underestimate this place as it serves up amazing italian.

Nice Italian.
Service was superb and all the pastas we tried were good.
Tasty dessert and great wine.
However, starters were very disappointing and overall the prices were too expensive for what we got.

Really bad takeaway delievery system. Stuffed order up rang and rang, still couldnt get it right. Pizza was cold by the time it got to us. Disappointed

Love this local around the corner from us. The staff are so lovely and helpful and the food is worth the money! Pizzas and pastas are too good to not order both x

Been going here since 1988. If you want "real" pasta. Hand made and sauces authentic this the place to go. Mumma was one of the original celebrity chiefs in the 80"s and her son Ricardo and his wife have done her proud in my view.. You could pay double and not get as good a home made Italian meal. Pizza is awesome also. Keep it up guys.

Do yourself a favour and try the Formaggio Pizza, it's amazing! The rocket salad is simple but really tasty. Great customer service and reasonably priced.
Alex Stevenson
Very decent dough with my prosciutto pizza, lamb gnocchi is to die for! Quality/polite service with an Italian flare! Never seen a Nutella calzone quite as spectacular - brilliant!
CBF Glutton
Very good pastas with good portions for the price.
Decor and ambience is very nice.
Service was good but a tad slow.

Would love to come back soon.

Good food but left feeling let down. Had a dinner here for 5 and this is a real traditional looking Italian restaurant with all the decorations and artefacts hanging of every inch of every wall. We had a really friendly waitress that was able to ‘joust’ with us as we were all in a good mood. We were not happy with our booked table as it was in the center of the room and in hindsight we should have asked for a change. The drinks list is small and limited and unfortunately a lot of the spirits we ordered were either out or not stocked. Orders taken and drinks arrived quickly. From this point we started to get bumped by other patrons arriving for dinner. Then just before our main course arrived a small musical ensemble arrived and set up just to the side of us and we noticed other guests arriving and sitting at tables. Then the music started with a speaker less that a metre form us and so conversation was impossible and then our meals arrived. Uncomfortable – YES so we quickly finished our meals and went elsewhere for dessert and coffee. The food we ordered was without complaint, full of flavour and good portion sizes together with friendly staff could have made this a great night, unfortunately it was spoilt by our table placement and the band – surely they would have known how close the band would have been to our table before we arrived? Tonight we left disappointed

Worst Pizza Ever. Cold and soggy

Not impressed would not recommend to anyone

Mamma's is the place to go for an authentic Italian meal - she will even come over to your table and tell you herself! Very nice atmosphere, feels like you're at someone's house for dinner. And they have gluten free pasta! It's a good idea to phone ahead

So disappointed. With such a great reputation and a previous good experience I was left so disappointed by mamma Vittoria's. With interstate friends with us I thought we would show off this Melbourne family restaurant.
The service was diabolical. We were just forgotten after entree and asked if we would like the bill?????
The entree was very average- the seafood plate was deep fried white bait and less than fish and chip shop quality prawns. 2 of them. And 1 scallop.
Arriving at 7.30pm- I'm not kidding- main was served at 9.55pm. The excuse being the kitchen was 'so busy'. So busy everyone around arriving after us was fed and had left??
To make up for this we were given a plate of rocket.
Umm....thanks.
The salmon was soggy with soggy sloppy artichoke as the accompanying vegetables.
The pork chops were a fatty undersized mess.
After all of that I'm still baffled at how the bill came to such an extraordinary amount.
You should be embarrassed. I was in front of interstate guests.

They did it again....so wow. We have been going here for approx. 20 years (so has the Collingwood Football club.....guessing for the carbs) it never disappoints, Natasha is the perfect host. Why go back, well 20 years tells you something.

Like it. This is one beautiful family restaurant, very satisfying

Just got out of there... The service was really bad, the waiter wearing glasses was very rude overall (behavior, comments and quality of service). The food was very disappointing, my pizza was way too salty, the paste tasteless the gnocchi were overcooked and the ragu sauce flavorless, the salmon raw in the middle and with few bones, the meatballs on the spaghetti and pizzas were processed and not fresh at all and to finish the Parmesan cheese was terrible tasted like very low quality cheap cheese. Not recommending that place at all, and way overpriced for that quality of food and service, and very loud.

So so Good...Well done!. Its very hard to go to a dinner out with kids and get good quality.... This place did it! Excellent service, excellent food. Chose this place at random after leaving a bar nearby and am so happy that we did. Really quality Italian food. We will be coming back!

Yum!! Can't believe I've only just tried this place! My new pizza delivery joint

I have not been to Mamma Vittoria's in a while and I have to say the last experience was very disappointing. Good was very simple and very bland tasting. When you are paying $26 for a pasta I would expect it to be amazing! It does have a great ambience but that's all it had in afraid. Will not be going back...

Love this place!!! I've just moved to Collingwood and this place is an institution. Eat in or take home its perfect. The family provide great service and a friendly experience.

Don't get delivery/take-away. Great if you eat in, horrible food delivered. Could not be more different, gnocchi was chalky, pizzas were cold and pasta had barely any sauce. Some restaurants should just stick to serving in house, this is definitely one of them.

Fantastic service delicious food well done!!
Steven
Good home style pasta...pizza is good too and the wine selection is also very impressive. Go for the pasta as it is well worth it

Great pizza and they deliver!. Great authentic Italian style pizza, must try!
High Expectation
I have lived in this area for 7 years and never eaten here - I am now kicking myself!!! This is the best Italian food I have eaten outside of Italy.
For me, Francesco and his family really put the faith back into dining out.
This is now one of my very few restaurants I can take family and friends and relax in knowing they will love it just as much as I do!

Had dinner there on Saturday night, food was fantastic. The pizzas were great as were pastas will definitely be back.

Mamma Vittoria’s Opened by Vittoria Tonin, November 1982, is an exuberant celebration of the best of Italian food, wine & lifestyle.

Mamma Vittoria's will be competing for the title of Best Pizzeria in Melbourne during the first edition of the Melbourne Pizza Festival.

Upstairs Reception Experience. First time at Mamma Vittoria's, as I was invited to a function upstairs on Sunday 4.3.12. Very relaxing rustic atmosphere, but what a surprise starting off with fresh anti pasta platters, followed by entree of gnocci in red minced meat sauce and a cream based rigatoni, delicious! Main was a favourite i did not expect, a medium cooked steak, fantastic, followed by fresh fruit platters and cakes. What a feast, and the waitress service was excellent. I was told that the meals were the same. I will definately be going back to this place and taking a few of my mates.

Not returning!!!. Been twice....overcharged twice...not going back!!!!

The food????...who cares!!!

Fantastic. Mt friend and I went there for lunch yesterday and we had the prosciutto pizza and the lamb ragu calzone. Both were excellent, and with an Italian pinot grigio and the most attentive staff, it was the most wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Smith Street. I can't wait to go back and try the pastas.

Amazing!. I'm new to fitzroy, and apon completing my shopping i walked past mamma vittoria's one friday, intrigued by its rustic interior and wood fire oven.
that night i returned to dine with my partner. we had a traditional italian antipasto which you could taste was fresh and the selection of meats were brilliant. for mains we had a dilectible trio of pasta of our choice (which was great) constisting of gorgonzola gnocchi, riccardino rigationi (cream, napoli sauce, bacon and spring onions) and a fabulous ragu spag) and shared a "prosciutto crudo" woodfired pizza which tasted as though it was imported from italy! dessert was a rich tiramisu, which tasted exactly like my grandmothers. the waitering staff were very kind, seeing as it was fairly busy and that night there were few floor staff. however the amazing thing was when we went to pay the bill, we saw two young women over the stoves and by the oven which was astonishing! well done! definitely dine there again... now that they've got delivery and takeaway makes it even better!

Most disappointing!. I dined at Mamma Vittoria's on a Saturday night and I was most disappointed on a number of levels. Firstly, the food. We ate antipasto (bland) and then pastas for mains. My Spaghetti Marina had very little seafood, was overcooked and bland. The rest of the meals looked pretty average too for the prices they were charging and I was expecting something a bit more special.
The waitress did not smile once.
The icing on the cake was when the bill came and we had been overcharged $170! We had a large table of around 16 people. The bill had been hand written as apparently their cash register was broken. I found it difficult to believe that a bill could be so far out. If it was a miscalculation, why hadn't someone added up the lengthy bill twice?? To add insult to injury, the manager refused to make the corkage fee complimentary for the mishap and instead offered some free coffees. Big deal?! Also, it was too late by then, we'd already had coffee and cake.
The restaurant itself lacked character, very different to how I remember it 10 years ago, with it's rustic theme. I sincerely hope that Mamma Vittoria's aren't simply 'resting on their laurels' as it is a long established restaurant and have been there for 25 years.
Steven
Best pizza. Never been to mamma vittoria despite spending so much time on smith st. One day i felt like a wood fire oven pizza and all i can say it was the best pizza I had in Melbourne!!!
Mathew Salzone
Try the pasta!. Mamma Vittorias is place you go to when you have pasta on your mind. Its freshly made in their store across the street and always lives up to expectation. Others mains can be overcooked at times but the pasta is always amazing!
