Review Marquis Of Lorne - Fitzroy

Don't let the old school appearance of this pub fool you.. this isn't an average joint! High quality pub food served in their quaint dining room and a couple of levels of drinking space including a rooftop for sunny days..

Came to Marquis of Lorne for Sunday drinks with some friends. This pub has a good vibe and the inside and rooftop areas are both a dream. The staff were really chill and friendly, and I really liked the chilled red I had :))

We loved this venue so much before we even ordered we booked in another event. It reminds me so much of a London pub. The staff are really lovely. The fireplace smoked a bit... need to get it cleaned out me thinks 🤔... what an awesome venue. Highly recommend it and the food was glorious!! What a hidden little gem.

Fantastic food, quick extremely friendly staff, accommodating for all needs. We've had a 6 year old with us who's a fussy eater. 7 of us ordered 7 different food. All was amazing. I've ordered the duck. Couldn't make it better myself at home. Extremely tasteful, falling off the bone. Five star for the chef and the staff.

Great food tucked away in Fitzroy. Multiple levels, great ambience and vibe, food is excellent. It's great quality for the price you pay, variety of beer and wine is vast. Pub style feel with a lovely menu.

Great atmosphere. Food was outstanding. Drinks took a little too long to arrive at times. Would recommend.

Love the atmosphere and vibe of the Marquis of Lorne, 2nd time i've come back and never disappoints. Great hearty meals, and good beer selection all for a reasonable price. 3 levels so it always has something to offer for any group.

Private dining room. Great food great wine list and super friendly staff. Open fireplaces. Awesome vibe.

Pubs and bars that use post mix for mixers should charge accordingly. This isn’t McDonald’s. Open a can or a bottle and mix that stuff around! Also; preferably don’t get your grubby mitts all over the lime, orange and lemons that go in the drinks. That’s yuk.

A nice Fitzroy pub that is a cool place to grab a drink and chill out. On a corner in the backstreets of Fitzroy, the Marquis is an old school style pub that has been modernised with nice finishes. A comfy fit out makes it a popular place with locals, especially on weekends when it can get quite crowded.<br/><br/>Serving reasonably priced drinks in a well stocked bar, and food available in a separate dining area; hanging out here is a pleasure. Service is quick and efficient, and the staff are lovely to deal with. The Marquis of Lorne lacks pretension that some other pubs in the area have, and that is why it attracts a loyal crowd of regulars who are just out to have a good time.

Heard this place changed hands a while back, but hadn't checked it out for years. Went tonight for dinner and WOW.<br/><br/>Fantastic openers: octopus, taramasalata, the best steak tartare, great potatoes, perfect chips. The menu looks a tad wanky, but it's legit AF.<br/><br/>The scotch fillet was fantastic at a fantastic price.<br/><br/>Nice cosy rooftop.<br/><br/>If you're in the neighborhood, and want a fantastic meal in an old-school setting, highly recommended.<br/><br/>It's not a place for a huge group, but for a group of 2-6, would be ideal. The food was the best I've had at the price in that neighborhood for a very long time.<br/><br/>Service was a bit on the salty side, but that's par. I'll be back soon and tartare will definitely be ordered.

Great bar but please turn the music down on Friday/Saturday night. It’s a place to have a conversation, not a place for the bar staff to listen to their play list.

Google "Best roasts in Melbourne" and you'll find this place listed within the first page of results.<br/><br/>My friend and I ordered a roast meal each which consisted of beef shin/shank, spiced carrots, mash and gravy. We were told to wait 45 minutes for this order. 45 minutes for a place reviewed to have one of best roasts in Melbourne? Sure! We'll wait.<br/><br/>So we sat at a table next to the bar, chatting about the World Cup and the AFL which by the way wasn't showing despite having two televisions which were off. Understandably, we were in hipster town and hipsters aren't exactly into sports (except for Tour De France). So while we were drinking our beverages, chatting and occasionally looking through our phones to pass time, we can hear more orders for roasts being made at the bar. "We'd like to inform you that it is a 45 minute wait", they said. These other orders by the way were being made half an hour after ours. What's with the unvarying wait time? This got us thinking that maybe they are ordering the beef shin through Uber or a nearby BBQ place. Or maybe it's that time of day where roasts aren't usually ordered so they are made to order instead. Still, we are keen on what's to come. <br/><br/>Eventually our meal came to the table. It looks great. A plate teeming with meat and veg that would make a serious carnivore very happy. Unfortunately that was as good as it gets. Because many parts of the meat were dry and overcooked and other parts of the dish lacked seasoning.

Really great food, can't fault it. Great vibe in the place and for the most part staff were helpful and friendly aside from one with very long hair who looked like he was smoking devils lettuce or had been crying. Bit unprofessional...

Ah my local on steak night. It was so full we should have booked but they let you put your name down on the middle floor. Meanwhile we got some drinks (I had the IPA on tap) while loitering with intent for someone to leave. They have always got a fine range of craft beers available.<br/><br/> <br/>We eventually slid onto a bar table on the ground floor next to the fire at the same time as they said a table was ready for us on the middle floor. Seems like quite quick turnover on steak night. <br/><br/>I had the steak and it's pretty decent for a steak night steak. Cooked to medium rare like I had asked and they had mustard on the table to go with it. The cauliflower was well grilled but a little bland. <br/><br/>I went to the bar to ask for sauce for the chips and a beer at the same time, and because I paid with paypass I hadn't realised that they thought I was asking for another serving of chips! That promptly came, and when they were clearing the table I casually mentioned it and thought nothing more. They then gave me a refund! This was much appreciated. Great service indeed!<br/><br/>I'm quite pleased to have this as  a local and would be delighted to keep coming on steak night and not on steak night!

The food is amazing. Steak night done right. It couldn't be simpler, no? Too bad the girls working appear to have just stumbled upon the foulest smell. Bit of a shame. 17/4/18

Elegant pub food. Delicious menu that is sure to please. My go to when you’re craving some warm, winter goodness. Would recommend making a booking on a weekend, a few days ahead, as it packs out quick.

Great bar & beer selection for those into their crafts. food was average. shared the 800g steak. cooked well but fairly greasy. banging chips mind.
Kate Dougherty
Great traditional pub style venue with extensive menu. For entree we shared the grilled octopus and then for main I went for the market fish of the day (blue eye) which came with mussels, tomato, fennel and risoni. We also shared the roasted cauliflower side. The octopus was well cooked and not chewy and my fish was really tasty and light. The cauliflower possibly could have done with some more spices/seasoning but that’s a minor criticism.

We dined here last night, there were 5 of us.  The pub is really nice and has a great vibe, the food fantastic.  I ordered the cheeseburger which was delicious and everyone else was happy with their meals.  We also shared some starters which were nice.<br/>We were seated upstairs and the air con was cranking which was good as it was so hot, there were a lot of people so it was very loud. <br/>I have to comment on the service, our waitress was quite rude.  She wasn't a great host and I didn't appreciate our drinks and food being slammed down in front of us.  Also, she would reach over completely coming across the front of us to grab any dirty plates (rather than go to the side to collect plates). She cut off my friend from talking because she literally shoved her body across her face. <br/>Even though the service was lacking and the noise level high I would still recommend as the food was good and the pub itself has character.

Food is great at this pub, especially the steaks and the burger options. Upstairs is always tight but the best seats are at the bench watching the action in the kitchen! No flat spots. Chips awesome. Love the variety in crafty froths.
Daniel
Holy Steak-fans Batman! Go there on steak night, enjoy a steak and a wide selection of beers, and never look back. <br/>The hanger steak and flank steak are two winners. Just go there...now... stop reading and go!
RoamingEats
Came on steak night Tuesday via recommendation but sadly our steaks were over cooked. The accompanying sides of chips and salad were very good though so perhaps it was an off night for them.
The Modern Gourmand
One of the many delights that come with the Melbourne pub and bar scene is not only the variety of choices at hand but of the quality and contemporary charm in which these establishments bring. Some redevelopments or tweaks in regards to Melbourne pub stalwarts often drain the feel of the place, losing its vibrancy and history as their ambitious vision goes that one step too far.

My burger was generous with a plump and flavoursome beef patty, pickles and marie rose sauce in a challah style bun. It was so much more enjoyable than the burgers from ubiquitous American style fast food joints which make me feel gross afterwards. Husband's beetroot gnocchi was the perfect texture and again lots of flavour.<br/><br/>Aside from that, loved the cosy ambience (candles, open fire, vintage lamps), perfect for a very cold and windy night.

Another place that thinks it's too cool for school (read ordinary, pretentious service). Food was good but not outstanding. We had the lamb neck with carrots and green olives, the fish with beans and artichokes and an eggplant dish).

My husband had been yearning for a great Sunday roast & this place kept on showing up in the reviews for a good roast.  He had a brisket & loved it, a bit small of a serving 7 could've done with a few more vegies but nice. I enjoyed the rocking burger it was fresh & tasty, chips crispy & hot & the beer cold - not our normal venue as its way out of our post code, but a nice afternoon in Fitztroy - service was really good too
Nat
Only sat outside for lunch but inside had a roaring fire for these cold winter days. Huge selection of beer and wine and the food portions are quite decent. Definitely going back to sit by the fire!

Easily my favourite pub in Melbourne. Great in both warm and cold weather, amazing food (favourites are schnitzel, tater cake and cheeseburger) with a great selection of beers on tap. A friend for life :)

The food, wine, service and value for money is seriously unbeatable at MoL. Have been eaten here a couple of times for lunch and both times have been so so good. The set menu is such good value for money at $45pp, the food just keeps in coming and is so delish. Can't wait to go back again to feast. And that cauliflower, amazeballs !

Service was great, friendly staffs.. had special lamb dish and chicken, lamb taste delicious, however the chicken could be done better, was dry.
Two Sheds
Somewhat shabby, slightly down at heel venue spread over a number of levels. Came here for a birthday function and enjoyed it. Somehow the place works as it has a comfortable warm feel about it. My lamb neck was lovely although slightly undersized for the price. It worked well with the grenache from the wine list. It'd take me a while to work out why this venue feels good. Perhaps it was the abundant wood surrounds and the open fire. Perhaps it was the reasonable food and the lovely service. To be frank, all I wanted to do was sit in front of the open fire for a while with a fortified wine. One day perhaps. (By the way, the waitress with the bone coloured top and black pants, you're a superstar. You were pleasant, efficient and never missed a beat tonight. The boss here needs to raise your pay)

Favourite pub in Melbourne. Relaxed vibe. Great if you can get a spot on the rooftop terrace on a sunny day. The steak tartare and the mussels are exceptionally good.

Never disappoints always great service and food with a fantastic rooftop<br/>Have enjoyed coming here for the last few year will miss it when we move West in the new year
Camilla
Love this place-great rooftop in summer, and perfect by the fire in winter. Staff genuine & friendly, cracking wine list and the food has been top notch every visit.

This is one of the Best little hidden gems in Fitzroy. The Sunday Roasts are Wonderful, ( Not your normal Roast & 3 Veg) - Great choice of different Beers <br/>The Staff are great, helpful and very friendly. The Chefs brilliant to work in the open kitchen and send meals out that not only look good but taste delicious. <br/>Have been a few times, Yesterday we all the Roast of the Day, Roasted Beef Shin on a bed of Mushroom Ragu then roasted parsnips. We all thought give it a go, as none of us had ever tried it before. Wow is all i can say from the time in arrived to the wiping of our plates with Complimentary Crusty Bread. We all Loved it. Not enough room for dessert. Excellent Value. Better than a fancy Restaurant.

Very cool place, friendly stuff and nice vibe. On Friday night I went there with a friend and we had 2 beers, they overcharged me. When I noticed a few days after,  I went back and after showing the bank transaction they gave me the difference back without a fuss. They were very honest. I would definitely recommend this place. I wish I was living nearby to make it my local pub.

Fish in chilli broth was nice. Our table of three were all encouraged to order numerous side dishes. And thank goodness we did! The portions are small. Unfortunately, the medium priced meals turned into expensive as a result of purchasing the extras to make it a decent portion. The customer service & wine list were excellent, which would make me return again. <br/>

Who knew this unassuming pub in the back streets of Fitzroy is such a gem? Best pub food I have had and an amazing place to hang out on a sunny day - very cute and cosy rooftop and long tables outside as well. I came on a Tuesday evening and all 3 levels were buzzing with people, which I did not expect at all. I couldn't go past the Tuesday $16 steak deal, but will be back to try al the other things on the menu!

Supremely average cheeseburger. The bun is super chewy, dense and just quite unlikeable. It's also tiny. My friend ordered the potato cakes and was similarly sorely disappointed. There are too many good places to waste time going back to an average one. I won't come back here for the food again.
Mya
Really cute local pub, good selection of beers on tap and plenty of hipsters to mingle with if that's your crowd. Rockling burger is on point.

I'm giving five stars here as I can't fault the place. Great beers on tap, in bottles, tinnies and longnecks. Good little outside rooftop bar. Fireplace in the dining room. Open kitchen. Lovely staff. Bread to chew sometimes.... The winning thing is definitely the food. To be specific, they do potato cakes, and they are SOOOOO DAMN GOOD! The cheeseburger is flippin delicious too. Pink in the centre. Very cheesy. The lamb dish is effed up amazing. So mich tender meat on lemony roasted kale .... Droooolll. Chicken Kiev is also apparently really yum. Go suss it out

Some of the best pub food I've ever had! Oddly enough my favourite was probably the potato cakes, not sure how they made a potato cake taste so good. Also has a decent selection of craft beers :)

Monday night is curry night at this neighbourhood local haunt and the curry is cooked with love by Kerala. There's a choice of three each week and we had the chicken and fish. Each dish comes with rice and naan at a midweek bargain price of $15.

Excellent food. Chicken is superb, potatoe cakes sensational. Friendly staff. Beers on the top level looking over the city is something special. Will be back

After what was just shy of an hour and a half after ordering, our food finally came out. During that period the group had been on the receiving end of some stale bread, a few fries before the waitress realised that dish was for another table, as well as a couple free rounds of drinks for the unusually long wait.
Minda Barley
The chicken really is remarkable. Golden and crispy skinned it comes jointed and the meat is so juicy and tasty.
Coffee Patrol
Return to very old favourite. This was a nostalgia trip probably 2 decades ago this pub was serving great food. It was great to come back to a very different set up - much hipper and more layed back. Great happy and attentive staff. It was steak night, a just right size steak cooked to request tasted great really good chips. Others had the schnitzel nicely presented and enjoyed the egg plant (aubergine please) dish was a bit small but no complains on quality and taste. Good selection of beers on tap and from the fridge. Room was a it noisey but as the evening progressed it got better and enjoyed the kinks sound track Waterloo sunsets...... Will come again no doubt and iit won't be another 20 year wait!
Andrew_lemon
Dr lemon. Literally had a pants explosion to the steak. Cooked to perfection. Staff attentive and excellent for aspecial occasion. Keep up the good work.

Had dinner tonight w some friends, 3 levels, lovely dining room. <br/><br/>Good wine list at really reasonable prices which is a nice change. I had the eggplant which was beautiful but serving size could have been slightly more generous.
Emma CR Layton
Dudes, good pub but the size of your serve of chips is an absolute joke. You're kidding right? Come on guys, lift your game.

Terrible food. Yesterday afternoon we went for lunch at this pub, we had heard great things about the food so we were looking forward to some good pub grub. We had a rockling burger with chips, a lamb burger and chips and potato cakes. The food arrived quite quickly as I think we were the only ones eating, everyone else seemed to be drinking. All of the food was lukewarm and the chips were actually cold. Everything was extremely greasy, the fish burger was smothered in mayonnaise and the potato cakes were inedible they were so greasy. The portions are not very big either for the price you pay, we will definitely not go back there to eat.
Reefsider
Disappointing. I ordered the fish, a safe bet I thought especially as it was a special, Blue Eye with a chickpea, walnut and grape salad accompaniment (thinking I would push the chickpeas to the side). I was hungry, I expected the fish to be the hero, I wanted fish, but sadly what arrived was a plate piled with chickpeas swimming in a dressing with 2 one inch square pieces of coolish overcooked fish on top the size of which would probably classify as a small entrée portion, definitely not a main. Menu should have read Chickpea salad with fish. Perhaps if I liked chickpeas it would have been just another forgettable meal. The chips (extra) were awful, those coated offerings from a pack I'm guessing, powdery and not very hot either, however the wine was great and the staff friendly. We were an early booking, no pressure on the kitchen. I made bruschetta when I got home.

Loved it. Great renovation of a local boozer. Great vibe, excellent staff. Food is absolutely on the money and the rooftop is great. Get here before you won't be able to get in.

Liking the new Marquis. Have been twice now and I really like it. They're freshened up the place without making it too stainless steel/hygienic looking. I think the counter meals are a good price point and food came out really quickly. The potato cakes were amazing and we also had rockling burgers which I would recommend. Yet to try the fancier meals.

Nice for a beer. The main highlight is the beer. It kinda goes downhill from there.<br/><br/>The plates are bare of diversity. The prawn entree was overcooked. The side salad with the porterhouse was lettuce leaves. The meals just weren't up to usual pub standards, especially compared to the Napier, Union or Gem.<br/><br/>And although the service was friendly, it didn't make up for a missed meal order (last meal arrived after everyone else had finished - though they did take a pot of beer off the bill), and forgetting to add cutlery and glass for another person (had to ask for both).<br/><br/>The new owners haven't changed much in the restaurant decor. I get the feeling it's a work in progress. Will try again in 6 months time.

Measly lamb roll. The lamb roll was measly even though it was the same price as meals with chips and sides. Considering the nice setting the meals were nothing special. Also had to chase up our drinks. Fish burger was good but whatevs.
