A nice Fitzroy pub that is a cool place to grab a drink and chill out. On a corner in the backstreets of Fitzroy, the Marquis is an old school style pub that has been modernised with nice finishes. A comfy fit out makes it a popular place with locals, especially on weekends when it can get quite crowded.
Serving reasonably priced drinks in a well stocked bar, and food available in a separate dining area; hanging out here is a pleasure. Service is quick and efficient, and the staff are lovely to deal with. The Marquis of Lorne lacks pretension that some other pubs in the area have, and that is why it attracts a loyal crowd of regulars who are just out to have a good time.
Heard this place changed hands a while back, but hadn't checked it out for years. Went tonight for dinner and WOW.
Fantastic openers: octopus, taramasalata, the best steak tartare, great potatoes, perfect chips. The menu looks a tad wanky, but it's legit AF.
The scotch fillet was fantastic at a fantastic price.
Nice cosy rooftop.
If you're in the neighborhood, and want a fantastic meal in an old-school setting, highly recommended.
It's not a place for a huge group, but for a group of 2-6, would be ideal. The food was the best I've had at the price in that neighborhood for a very long time.
Service was a bit on the salty side, but that's par. I'll be back soon and tartare will definitely be ordered.
Ah my local on steak night. It was so full we should have booked but they let you put your name down on the middle floor. Meanwhile we got some drinks (I had the IPA on tap) while loitering with intent for someone to leave. They have always got a fine range of craft beers available.
We eventually slid onto a bar table on the ground floor next to the fire at the same time as they said a table was ready for us on the middle floor. Seems like quite quick turnover on steak night.
I had the steak and it's pretty decent for a steak night steak. Cooked to medium rare like I had asked and they had mustard on the table to go with it. The cauliflower was well grilled but a little bland.
I went to the bar to ask for sauce for the chips and a beer at the same time, and because I paid with paypass I hadn't realised that they thought I was asking for another serving of chips! That promptly came, and when they were clearing the table I casually mentioned it and thought nothing more. They then gave me a refund! This was much appreciated. Great service indeed!
I'm quite pleased to have this as a local and would be delighted to keep coming on steak night and not on steak night!
Elegant pub food. Delicious menu that is sure to please. My go to when you’re craving some warm, winter goodness. Would recommend making a booking on a weekend, a few days ahead, as it packs out quick.
Great bar & beer selection for those into their crafts. food was average. shared the 800g steak. cooked well but fairly greasy. banging chips mind.
Great traditional pub style venue with extensive menu. For entree we shared the grilled octopus and then for main I went for the market fish of the day (blue eye) which came with mussels, tomato, fennel and risoni. We also shared the roasted cauliflower side. The octopus was well cooked and not chewy and my fish was really tasty and light. The cauliflower possibly could have done with some more spices/seasoning but that’s a minor criticism.
We dined here last night, there were 5 of us. The pub is really nice and has a great vibe, the food fantastic. I ordered the cheeseburger which was delicious and everyone else was happy with their meals. We also shared some starters which were nice.
We were seated upstairs and the air con was cranking which was good as it was so hot, there were a lot of people so it was very loud.
I have to comment on the service, our waitress was quite rude. She wasn't a great host and I didn't appreciate our drinks and food being slammed down in front of us. Also, she would reach over completely coming across the front of us to grab any dirty plates (rather than go to the side to collect plates). She cut off my friend from talking because she literally shoved her body across her face.
Even though the service was lacking and the noise level high I would still recommend as the food was good and the pub itself has character.
Food is great at this pub, especially the steaks and the burger options. Upstairs is always tight but the best seats are at the bench watching the action in the kitchen! No flat spots. Chips awesome. Love the variety in crafty froths.
Holy Steak-fans Batman! Go there on steak night, enjoy a steak and a wide selection of beers, and never look back.
The hanger steak and flank steak are two winners. Just go there...now... stop reading and go!
One of the many delights that come with the Melbourne pub and bar scene is not only the variety of choices at hand but of the quality and contemporary charm in which these establishments bring. Some redevelopments or tweaks in regards to Melbourne pub stalwarts often drain the feel of the place, losing its vibrancy and history as their ambitious vision goes that one step too far.
Don't let the old school appearance of this pub fool you.. this isn't an average joint! High quality pub food served in their quaint dining room and a couple of levels of drinking space including a rooftop for sunny days..
Came to Marquis of Lorne for Sunday drinks with some friends. This pub has a good vibe and the inside and rooftop areas are both a dream. The staff were really chill and friendly, and I really liked the chilled red I had :))
We loved this venue so much before we even ordered we booked in another event. It reminds me so much of a London pub. The staff are really lovely. The fireplace smoked a bit... need to get it cleaned out me thinks 🤔... what an awesome venue. Highly recommend it and the food was glorious!! What a hidden little gem.
Fantastic food, quick extremely friendly staff, accommodating for all needs. We've had a 6 year old with us who's a fussy eater. 7 of us ordered 7 different food. All was amazing. I've ordered the duck. Couldn't make it better myself at home. Extremely tasteful, falling off the bone.
Five star for the chef and the staff.
Great food tucked away in Fitzroy. Multiple levels, great ambience and vibe, food is excellent. It's great quality for the price you pay, variety of beer and wine is vast. Pub style feel with a lovely menu.
Great atmosphere. Food was outstanding. Drinks took a little too long to arrive at times. Would recommend.
Love the atmosphere and vibe of the Marquis of Lorne, 2nd time i've come back and never disappoints. Great hearty meals, and good beer selection all for a reasonable price. 3 levels so it always has something to offer for any group.
Private dining room. Great food great wine list and super friendly staff. Open fireplaces. Awesome vibe.
