Review Hooked Fish And Chipper - Fitzroy

Quincy Malesovas
I’ve gotta admit that for a chain, Hooked is pretty good. They’re reasonably priced, relatively fresh and healthy and offer a lot of variety. I most recently tried the British style combo with grilled fish, mushy peas and chips (subbed for sweet potato for just a few bucks more). It was absolutely delicious and very filling. I’d gladly get it again.

Best fish and chips I've had for a long time. Everything was just cooked perfectly for my taste. Not an easy task given the variety in a single meal: two varieties of fish, scallop, prawn, dimsum, calamari potato cake and chips. All just lovely. Biggest whole scallop I've seen in fast food in years.
C Z
Overall a good experience. Decent shortlist of fish types showing its seriousness. On a more recent trip the fish was a little soaked with oil and the chips were a little dry. 3.5 stars

We had the Lunchdeal of $10,95 and chose the fish and chips with a salad. Also it is apparently normal to serve free tap water in Australia :) the salad and fish tasted fresh, good chips and nice atmosphere. Would recommend it!

I placed an order for $140 via Deliveroo. Only $50 meal arrived. When I called the restaurant, I was told that my missing meals were on the way. Even though I live 1 km away from the restaurant, it didn't come for 30 minutes. When I called the restaurant again, a person named David said that the grill was closed and my meals would not come. Definitely do not trust this business because of them I was disgraced to my guests at home. I definitely do not recommend. DO NOT RECOMMEND GO!
Scott Rutledge
Great true value restaurant. The service is so friendly and the food is large portioned for the price. The lunch is especially good value with their $10 specials.
Daniel Breen
Cannot recommend enough! Really nice staff, food was fresh and warm, even after 10 min walk home. One of the best fish n chips I’ve ever had in Australia! Will be back again.
Emma-Mary Hughes
I love the way you cook the fish. We can’t get to our favourite fish and chip shop thru lockdown as it’s outside our 5kms. But happy now we tried Hooked as it’s tasty too, will be coming back
Tom Cahill
Has gone significantly down hill since the first time we went over two years ago. Chips were clearly frozen and price has gone up with no little touches like there used to be. Won't be visiting again.
Joseph Borchan
Possibly the saltiest meal I've ever had in my life!!! What a waste of $30 If I could give it half a star I would but I don't know how... My throat hurts from all the salt and the lack of value in this meal
Kristen Kumar
Pretty disappointed in tonight's takeaway from Prahran. Over cooked fish and "Asian inspired salad" that looked straight out of a packet from Coles. Small chips were definitely small!! I think I counted 8-10 chips in the box. Nothing worse than a restaurant that drops it's standards once it becomes "cool"! Not happy.

I have been going to Hooked Hawthorn almost weekly and it is not the same anymore. Yesterday I ordered Fisherman's soup and it was not HOT at all. It even had a raw prawn! Lucky I did not get sick, but I won't risk eating there again. So disappointing.
Sharnie Moore
The food at Hooked is amazing and sooooo fresh!!! I couldn't have asked for a better meal and my taste buds were in heaven while I was eating my meal.... It Will be very hard to beat the service and/or food quality provided by The Hooked team!!! Cheers to an enjoyable evening!!!
Shirley Bright
travelled interstate to especially go to this restaurant. Fantastic fresh fish and salad, definitely hooked !! Sarah hives are an allergy not that the prawns aren't fresh ! I would recommend you don't eat Prawns anywhere again !
David Barrett
How do these guys always end up with the worlds slowest staff.
Neill Murray
Execrable calamari and no response to my complaint
Danny Walker
Chapel st location - dont answer the phone to take orders, Staff forgot half my order, over priced fish and the salad that came with the fish was terrible.
Grange Wallis
I'd love to post the photo of the complete lack of fish in mine and my girlfriend's burgers tonight. It was all bread and sauce. Pretty appalling really! Brunswick St shop, it seems like blatant cost cutting. It's a shame, because you generally have a great product. But I'm worried you going to become like Nandos. All flare and no meat!
Craig Nicholson
Great quick feed! Fish yum... And Asian Salad is great... Will be back... Maybe try the soup next time!!
Amanda Henwood
Really like the new salad mix
Steve Maidment
I love this place!

All the foods are amazing! But turn on the heater man, so coldd!!!!!!(chapel st)

Just love it there
Violet Lim
Fantastic fish and chips for this price! Love it that the lunch special is available daily and the option of Asian greens! Would definitely be back again!
The Gluten-Free Foodie
The best place to get gluten free fish and chips in the inner north and near the city! Delicious but relatively simple menu with lots of gluten free options. If you get a standard combo make sure to order a few pieces of gf calamari as they are amazing. I love that you can order 1 or 2 as well instead of a whole set. The blue grenadier is not too bad but I prefer the barramundi. Both the sweet potato and slaw salads are good. We have introduced so many people to this place.
Daniel Wirjoprawiro
One of the best places to get healthier fish dishes 🐟 in the Fitzroy area. Great for takeaway or dine-in. It also has a chilled beer garden out of the back to kick back and relax!
Hungry Little Dinosaur
A fish and chip shop that isn’t greasy and doesn’t stink of oil and old chips! Tasty calamari and great salad options! Have been here several times and had never failed to disappoint!
Speccy
Best sweet potato wedges ever!! Great value options, such as the Monday barramundi special. Fish was well cooked, tasted fresh, was of generous size & flavorsome. Good option for salads too. Recommend for a quick weeknight meal & doesn't break the bank. Plenty of lovely options
SeanyB
Quality fish and chips with friendly service and great value for money. For $30 for two people it felt like we were served up a feast! Al very fresh and tasty. A really enjoyable meal.
Melita
Excellent food, excellent gluten free options and a dedicated gf fryer too. Love the lunch specials, they are an absolute bargain. I come here regularly for the fish, chips and the Asian coleslaw. Service is friendly. Meals are usually quickly served during the day, though at night time you can be in for a bit of a wait due to excessive numbers of foodora, uber eats, deliveroo and other takeaway orders... I feel that they might need to add more people in the kitchen to accommodate this and not put off other customers! Food is always fresh, generous, crisply battered and the Asian slaw is a taste sensation. Delicious!
Tim Meade
Consistently good quality fish and chips with a beautifully balanced Asianslaw. The specials, Barramundi Monday in particular, give great value and ensure repeat business on a regular basis.
Norealcritic
Cold fish, salad never arrived, tried calling them and went through to voicemail (to which they didn't reply). The delivery itself was delayed and took a very long time (Uber Eats). Previously had a good experience with them, so not sure what went wrong tonight.
Jos Reynolds
So disappointing to say the least! Below are the pictures of a LARGE chips and the chicken strips combo... as you can see it looks like it was literally thrown together and then thrown to the uber eats delivery driver. There was absolutely NO love put into this order. Which is a massive shame. If I had one bit of advice to share, it would probably be to dine in... maybe you will have a better experience?
BIRCHER QUEEN 👑
Superfood salad was the only highlight. The grilled fish was small in size and half the chips were small bits of batter. All three dishes on our table were the same regarding size and quality... won't be rushing back. $22 for grilled fish, salad and chips.
Kimberley Leggett
Crispy chips and the fish burger was pretty tasty too- one of the better ones I've had, made fresh. We sat outside in the courtyard which was nicely set out in the garden. Also had a fish + veg once and couldn't complain. Good food, good value.
Andrew
This little place serves up some really nice fish & chips. I ordered 'British Fish & Chips', with a Coopers Pale Ale. My fish was battered/fried perfectly, and chips were crunchy too. Not really too fussed/keen on smashed minted peas, but thought I'd give it a go.
Zoe Garkinis
Sweet potato chips sooooo good! Crunchy but still soft and large, decent serve. Salt and pepper calamari not bad liked the sauce with it something different.
Vicky Ho
Can't go wrong with fresh chips and fish.

The staff was very friendly. Ordered the fish burrito for 10 dollars during their lunch special, highly recommend this!
Two Sheds
I'm impressed. Gosh you can get some good food delivered these days. We had this off Uber Eats, courtesy of my younger son, and it was absolutely delicious I'd have to say. I had the calamari, chips and an Asian salad. It was really lovely and the serves were fairly generous. Bravo.
Jaymie
Yummy! I ordered the prawns and salt & pepper calamari to take away. Short wait time. Even after my 20 minute walk home the food was still warm and delightful. Not too oily. I will certainly be back and may hang out in the sweet beer garden outside 🌿
Panfilo Conforti
Ho preso il classico british fish and chips. Molto buono! Il fritto davvero non era pesante. Locale molto carino. Tornerò a provare altri piatti.
Zoe Chou
Lunch special is amazing!!! Everyone should try their Asian salad it's unique with those herds in,which gives you a crush of freshness. Lots of chips and big fish!
Mo
Got the $32 pack for two people with the Asian slaw. It was a lot more food than I anticipated which was a good thing. Chips werent as great as I'd like, maybe a little stale, but the Asian slaw was delicious, as was the calamari and blue grenadier. You can choose if you want the fish grilled, crumbed, or battered, and you can sit inside or out.

Ordered seafood platter on a deal. Had crumbed and grilled fish, crumbed prawns, calamari and scallops with tartare sauce and chips. Perfect crisp batter and well-cooked seafood. Chips was average. The calamari was the highlight, so yum! Their salads are pretty tasty too! A very relaxed feel in the Fitzroy outlet, warm and inviting. Friendly staffs. Good for a slow lazy weekend.

Franchise Fish & Chips British style .....

A new rendition of this good ol' British Gourmet.

Seriously, I don't know how difficult it is to run a franchise Fish & Chips outlets ... it must be a difficult job making sure you deliver the same quality on a daily basis, hence we must appreciate the Standard Operating System at McDonalds, KFC and the likes.

I've been to two (2) of their stores in Hawthorn and Fitzroy, each time we've had a different experience in terms of quality. We've had a bad one at Hawthorn (see my review) and a better one at Fitzroy last week. Fitzroy outlet doesn't resemble anything like the Hawthorn outlet, apart from the thick cut chips; nicely grilled and great batter on the fish, prawns, calamari and scallops.

Tonight (9/8/16) we've revisited Hawthorn outlet and had a better experience than the previous visit in June, more like the Fitzroy outlet, batter was thick and hard, not as thin as Fitzroy.

Their Sambal sauce is nice, can taste the Coconut in it, just needing to be hotter, that's why it's call Sambal :-) Shrimp paste? not too sure.

Consistency in delivering their product is an issue with this franchise. Trust you can get it right as it is a great concept, who doesn't like modern British Fish & Chips.
SweetPea
Wasn't impressed with Hooked Fish and Chipper. Ordered a pack that had pretty good fish and calamari but the chips were chunky and left you feeling quite stuffed and sluggish. Also it was quite pricey. Not to mention the atmosphere was quite awkward as it was a quiet Tuesday night and the staff didn't seem to notice the lack of music which made it feel like a funeral parlour. Overall quite disappointed.
Nick The Greek
Hmmm .....promised a lot but delivered little. The place is well presented but the food does not quite hit the mark. An upmarket take away fish and chip shop at best. We will not be back.
Thecomfortdentistau
I would give this place a zero if I can. Ordered a take away fish and chips; got home, NO FISH!!! Went back to restaurant, got my fish but chips were cold and fish were over fried... Worst fish and chip joint I've been to! I'd rather stick to my run down oily corner shop next time
Potojong
It's a fine balance for a fish and chip shop. Provide good cheap takeaway and also cater for customers that want to eat in. Hooked nail these two aspects. Fish and chips actually served on a plate with actual cutlery if you eat in. So simple but very important.
Davie 'G' Gorham
Thought while here I should try some proper fish n chips.

Was told Hooked does a decent meal.
Stopped in for lunch, ordered the Chipper Box.
Comes with 1 piece of Blue Grenadier, 6 pieces of calamari, salad & chips. (Or rice m salad which seems odd)
You can get your seafood battered or fried.

I of course got it all fried, the correct way.

The calamari were the stand outs of this meal.Perfectly cooked, great flavorful crispy batter. Paired well with the chili lime aioli.

The fish was good, nicely cooked, nice light batter.. But lacked any pronounce flavor over all.

The chips were okay, would've prefer hand cut chips, not ones that's looked like came out of frozen bag.

The salad didn't serve much of a point, balsamic dressing was incredibly bland. Just picked out the cucumbers.

Not a bad meal over all, would've eaten a full try of that calamari.
Awesome trendy fish and chip shop, beautifully decorated and has a gorgeous little courtyard at the back, you feel like you are in a restaurant. Fresh seafood and traditional British fish and chips. My friend ordered the barramundi which comes with salad and chips, it was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. I had the fish burrito, with chips, all the food was delicious and tasty and fresh. Friendly service and a very clean place. Reasonably priced and a large selection of soft drinks. Recommend👍

Been to hooked a couple of times and whilst the concept is fine I found the quality of fish a little run of the mill. It is quite expensive for what's on offer.

I've been coming here for 5 years
Always loved it but
Last year - food poisoning
This year - 3 times in a row my order was delivered incorrectly.
Too much
Also, the serving size has gotten so small, almost to a laughable point.
Won't be back.
Sadly for me.
Sara H.
Although, the portion has shrunk, this is still the best fish & chips I've had. Their tartare sauce is so good that I think it is necessary to get extra serving of it.
Mat
Really good burger (lunch special), and great big fries. Not too much sauce, nor too little. Felt really satisfied by it without being overfilled.
CLABEL
Ordered the Double Chippery with extra fish. For the fish I prefer the grilled one (as it's less oily), but if you like fried I think the batter is better the crumbs one. Salt pepper calamari was delightful, cooked to perfection. Chips was alright and tartar sauce is a must for fish and chips. The place is quite spacey with long table in the middle and they also have beer garden at the back where you can chill out and relax with friends. The staff was very helpful, vibrant and friendly. Will come back again sometime!

I go here for a great work lunch now and again and the food is always amazing! I usually get the lunch deal- grilled fish with rice and sweet potato salad with the Asian sauce.
However they have messed up 2 orders out of the 4 times I've been so be careful that your order is right. They claim to be good for gluten free food but they're not very careful (they put soy sauce on my rice which has wheat in it, even though I asked them not to). Also they left one of our sauces out another time. However the food is so yum that I keep going back!
Michael John Roberts
Best fish and chips in Melbourne. Plus they have mushy peas which I've not found anywhere else. Excellent food, good ambiance, and to top it all a beer garden :)
Erin
Hooked fish and chips disagreed with me some time back. At one point the batter used was so thick it was really hard to digest and really made a mockery of their 'healthy seafood' motto which it used to use. There were also occasions when the fish was undercooked, and hence, until recently, I hadn't been back for a while.

To their credit, the healthy tag has been dropped, they have new menu and new look, and to date the food seems genuinely better. I went for the the grilled fish lunch special with an Asian salad - nice, tasty, healthy. I would definitely go back for this item. The only other observation I would make is that if you go for dinner rather than lunch, the value leaves a little to be desired, as this is not a cheap form of fish and chips.

I did put it to the universe that I was after a detox in the New Years. After eating the fish here, I found myself hugging the porcelain throne and drinking a lot of water after it. The batter was too much. On the brighter side, a lot of people pay good money to get those detox cleanse flushes, where as I only paid $12.95. In saying that, I won't be going back here.
Laurenhedley
Beautiful fish and hand cut chips!! I would have given you a 5 but the rice was flavourless and sticky!! Your chips are so good and i can't wait to come back and get some to take away so i can make chip sandwiches mmm :) keep up the good work and put some flavour in that rice!
Ben
Good food but over priced. Large chips has about 20 chips in total. Chips cost nothing. Stop being hipster wankers and have proper size chips. Also no dimmies. Would go there again but only because there is no other Real fish and chip shop around
ThePrestonProwler
It's hard to find a good fish and chip place in Melbourne. The quality of the food here is generally better than most. The menu is tasty and quality ingredients are used. The menu has slid backwards a bit (bring back the grilled corn cobs)... But this is still hard to beat currently
Yorkstergram
Binula Tried the $10 Lunch deal today with grilled fish and a salad, well cooked fresh fish and fantastic sweet potato and quinoa salad! 👍 Will be back to try more.
Binula
Popped in here for lunch with a friend as we'd heard they do great fish and chips. I had the grilled dory burger and chips with chilli and lime aioli. The burger was delicious and the aioli was absolutely amazing! The thick cut chips were also very well done.

My friend got the blue grenadier with chips and salad and said the fish was fresh and flavourful, and the salad was also tasty and complemented the meal well.

Well worth a try!
Ed David
Absolutely delicious fish and chip shop but with so much more with healthy, grilled options, burgers, burritos and salads. The salads are divine - must try the Sambal sauce, such pop - so fresh!
Ann Dando
I can't give this place a better score because every time we go there it is a vastly different experience. The staff turn over with frightening regularity and the food and service changes each time they change. we have had some lovely meals there and some shockers. The last time was so bad we won't be going back. Shame because it was a good spot for people watching in the sun.
Sweet And Sour Fork
...so my Grilled NZ Dory with Rice and Asian Greens ($14.95) was not fish and chips per se, but it was surprisingly delicious for something so virtuous. The fillets of fish were firm and moist, served with brown rice seasoned with a little bit of sweet soy, and vibrantly fresh greens drizzled with soy sauce and sesame oil.
Christinemariestorey
Gluten free soggy disaster. Sorry guys, the fish was nice, but the gluten free batter was a disaster - so thick I was served a soggy, par cooked mess that tasted of gf flour. I ordered a selection of battered goods to see what was best - none.

I edible and such a waste of good fish.

The scallop was without roe and the batter was 5 times the weight of it. The fish ( dory) and potato cakes likewise.

Seriously disappointed.

I will be going back yo my fave gf fish n chips that make gf batter light, crispy and not competing with the fish - at half the price!

It's been more than a year since I last dined at Hooked in Fitzroy and it remains the best fish and chips that I have had in Melbourne! I first discovered Hooked when I came across a list of top 10 fish and chips in Melbourne on news.com.au a few years ago. After trying out fish and chips from a number of restaurants on that list, I found that Hooked is the best so far.
Chasing A Plate
...Hooked isn’t your average chipper though- it’s bent towards offering healthy seafood to the punters and endeavours to use local and ethically sourced seafood. So, apart from your usual deep fried fish n’ chips, you might also find the likes of grilled salmon, soy and sesame crusted tuna, fish tacos and sides such as salad, rice and Asian greens. We were invited to sample Hooked’s summer menu which looks to up the ante on their diners’ experience with the introduction of a lobster roll, Louisiana soft shell crab burger, fish fingers (also available in a wrap), sweet potato cakes and fries and fresh oysters, phew!..
Thegrazingpanda
Menu: Hooked is the brainchild of Ray Good and has been around for a while now serving healthy seafood – in three different branches – Fitzroy, Windsor and its newest branch in Hawthorn. I was lucky enough to be invited to try out their latest branch. The fit-out is exactly what you would expect to find beach-side with a modern twist – white rustic wooden panels combined with white washed exposed brick walls. There is a large communal table at the centre of the venue, surrounded by wooden tables which largely seat parties of two. To the right along the wall are sailor striped booth style seats and a lifebuoy with the inscription – Hooked – In Cod we Trust – further adding to the seaside vibe. Painted on the brick wall as you walk in is a mural of a blue grenadier, further on the wall is a painting of a diver complete with a diving suit – something for you to admire whilst you await your food. These extra touches, together with the friendly smiles of the staff behind the counter complet
Hide And Seek
The seafood is bought straight from the market and you can taste the freshness on your plate. Blue grenadier in a light tempura batter is flaky and juicy, and after you crunch through the crispy batter it virtually melts in your mouth. Vegetarians haven’t been left out either – try the vegie burger, made with chargrilled eggplant, guacamole, tasty cheese and salad, drizzled with a tangy sweet chilli sauce.
The World Loves Melbourne
Love it! The quality is amazing! We ordered a couple of the calamari lunch box and it was sensational! Had to order another! The calamari weren’t cooked as rings but large pieces – prefer that! Perfectly cooked! Fresh as! Ticks all the boxes when it comes to chips – that’s important!
Nikki M
When comparing to traditional fish and chip shops, Hooked is obviously at a higher price, but is a perfect place to enjoy tasty, ‘healthy’ (gluten free!) fish and chips on a hot summer’s day.
Mochii
Hooked sets itself as serving healthy seafood, with a slight twist on your usual fish and chips. Place itself isn't too big with a large communal table in the middle and several smaller tables on the side. Place is dimly lit, which I personally would've preferred if it was better lit. We went for dinner on a Wednesday night, the place wasn't too busy with a couple of other patrons. Order to be placed at the counter and collected when ready. We had the House Fish (Grilled w/ brown rice) $12.50 and the Box for One (Battered w/ half chips and half sticky rice) (~ $17.90). We enjoyed both the grilled and battered style fish. The batter was light and crisp and the calamari was pretty yummy too, not chewy and easily bitten into. Really liked the sweet potato crisps that accompanied the meal, thin enough and nicely baked/fried?. Chips were thick-cut and nothing different from your usual chips. With the sides, brown rice was alright, although pr

They have a cool take on fish and chips: a healthy one.

Appalling...sorry to say. Wanted to get a good takeaway en-route to an outdoor theatre event. Headed to the Vegie Bar, and parked a few doors down in front of Hooked.....menu looked good and decided to forego the Vegie Bar. We ordered Calamari, no chips and Superfood Salad, and two bottles of water. Collected our fabulously packaged food and took off, looking forward to dinner. Within a few minutes of leaving Hooked we opened the boxes to what can only be described as an appalling meal. Inside the large boxes were 6 very small pieces of Salt and Pepper Calamari, and a small mound of wilted green leaves and not more than a few seeds, one piece of broccoli (seriously!) and two little containers of dressing plopped on top of the salad!. This 'feast', of which we ordered two, cost just over $38.00 (including 2 bottles of water)! The calamari, of which I ate one piece, required razor sharp teeth to try and masticate. We tossed both boxes into the bin on the way to the theatre, and went hungry! No quality, not as advertised...never saw a pea, sundried tomato or quinoa in the salad....basically....inedible. We weren't expecting gourmet...but this wasn't even edible. Handed over $38.00 essentially for two bottles of water. The exterior of the business looks great, the menu looks great...however...just an illusion. Waitess? Very pleasant . Perhaps it was a 'bad night'? Would I go again? Didn't hook me in....and...no!

I don't know what's not to like about this place. Fresh fish, gourmet salads, bes fish tacos I've ever tasted & boutique beers. I'll never eat dirty paper wrapped f&c again.
Black-belt-ballerina
Cannot recommend Hooked enough!. The best Fish and Chips me and my partner have ever had. Being Gluten free means not a lot of options. I was so excited that they can do everything Gluten Free!!! And it was the best batter I have ever had so light it was just beautiful.

Definitely will be coming back when we are in Melbourne, and highly recomending to friends and family. The staff were also so lovely and really friendly. Overall an amazing place! We thoroughly enjoyed everything :)

Not hooked. Tried hooked in Fitzroy for the second time as we must have forgotten our first lack lustre experience. Hooked fish n chips are awful - there is not one redeeming feature. The fish tastes awful (frozen?), the chips taste stale and are like cardboard, the savings are small and it's super expensive. To add insult to injury, the staff are disinterested and have attitude. Don't go to hooked, kiwi fish n chips are better if you are willing to pay exhorbetent prices!
Charleskeenan4
Best fish and chips in Melbourne. Decided to check this place out after it was listed as one of Melbourne's best fish and chips in the Herald Sun - definitely worth the hype - really fresh and lots of different options other than your standard fish and chips. Good work guys, I'll be back soon to try the soft shell crab burger.
Out And About
Rude staff. Don't ask for water, you'll be told to go get it yourself even on a quiet night when the same waitress walked past the water every minute
Anusha Brett-Rogers
We had heard wonderful things about the fresh fish at Hooked & it was delicious but unfortunately the service we received needs major improvement.

We waited over 45mins when the restaurant was not busy. When asking the waiter what happened they made no apology except to say that shouldn't have happened. We believe they lost our order.

Even after receiving our meals we were disappointed receiving scallops instead of prawns! Thankfully the waiter did eventually bring prawns but still made no appology.

Please come up with a better ordering service.
Fitzie
Once was good ... Now terrible! Tough, over-cooked chips, oily grilled fish, salty fish burgers. Hooked! What went wrong? I've given you a second chance, a third chance, but it has to end. I'm no longer hooked. Judging by the thinning crowd, I'm not alone.
Shelleygroom
Will never go back. Was ridiculously too expensive for what you get! Will never return!
Sussex-house
Friendly, casual.. Very casual place with simple, slightly hit and miss type menu. Lentil burger and chips delicious. Not fabulous food but pretty good. Nice friendly atmosphere.
Gawk With A Fork
Good quality food but way too expensive.
Sylvia_88
Too expensive. Good food but it's overpriced!
Ryan
Great food but still overpriced. Food is delicious but the price stops me from returning regularly.
Mike
Service was good-friendly. I agree with other reviews that the food quality has gone down. Had lunch yesterday and it just wasn't not up to the quality I remember from a year ago.
Vonlutge
A close friend of mine recommended this place to me. Had the fish tacos. It was beautiful. I'd come back if I was in the area. The decor/theme and their work attire is adorable.
S_Melbourne
I used to like this place but fish servings are smaller, blander, soggy and inconsistent. The salad is bland and the sauces don't seem as flavoursome. Far too much money wasted on our meals here. Will happily explore alternative options.
Phoebe Fairman
It used to be called bakers cafe it was so cute. Breakfast coffee dinner lunch but now all changed too hooked fish and chips. Went here once never looked back too overpriced and you can get cheaper fish and chips why does it have to be fancy fish and chips it's just boring.
Akiha.junk
Overpriced. The fish was oily and expensive. Both me and my partner came back with a stomach ache after dining at the Fitzroy. Won't be going back there again.
Toscito
Too expensive, use to be good value, not now. This venue has become too expensive very quickly. The menu no longer offers a 'half-half' (salad / chips / rice choice) ; forcing customers to pay for these items separately and making a regular simple meal = $19.

Staff are always very good.

I've seen prices jump here year on year, without any change in quality / portion size. They have priced themselves and come across now as a grabbing, overpriced establishment forcing more cash from customers, without catering to their needs.

Further, their chips were amazing, refried, crispy, but have seen these deteriorate in quality and consistency too over time.
Vicki White
Tuna....Yum. I have been to Hooked a few times now, and the meals never disappoint! I have had the tuna burger on multiple occasions as sometimes I really felt like a tuna steak. So to see yesterday when I went in that tuna was now on their 'Catch of the Day' board I was delighted! A piece of tun, cooked to perfection, accompanied by the Asian Slaw salad was the perfect meal. Definitely going to be going back this weekend to have it again... cant wait.
Facebook User
Time Waster. First time as usual joint closed. First, put 'on hold' when tried to call in my order. That was 5-7 mins.Turned up to a line of people, which is fine. Despite this girl working the counter kept leaving and going out back. Took about 5 mins for each person to order. Line stayed. Never seen anything like it. Never again. Complete rabble.
Sandy Jeffries
Overrated!!! Their marketing dept do a great job. Too bad their food didn't support their hype! We tried it twice with various menu items and it was below ordinary. Potato cakes were disgusting and none of us ate them. If you want to charge those prices you have to deliver amazing food!!
AnthonyP
I don't usually write reviews on here but I feel for this one I really had to. This place has really REALLY small portioning for both chips and salad. My partner and I have been going here since it opened and tonight's meal was the smallest I've seen. We paid $5.95 for about one potato worth of chips, I'm really not sure where in the world that is classified as 'regular'. However the biggest rip off was the 'super food salad', $10.95 for what could barely pass as a side and made the chips look like they were super sized. Very disappointing, won't be going back and I'd recommend others to do the same.
Nootzz
Went here the other night and had the salmon and Asian greens. It was amazing definitely be going there again for a good feed.

Fish Lingers. Ok, I get that it's not 1986 anymore but paying that much for a piece of fish would make anyone wonder why Jesus was just going round handing it out for free. Especially when you can taste that it's been frozen. I can only imagine their kitchen is filled with little, freaked out fishes, encased in blocks of ice like Han Solo was in Star Wars. I'm sure the term, "fishy" was coined from this joint.

DELICIOUS food, the fish is absolutely amazing, had to order a second dish because of how yum it was. And the staff were so friendly and polite

Amazing food. Went to Hooked last night for dinner with some friends..
Definatly some of the best fish and chips ive had.
Top quality food highly reccomend

Massively down hill. Serves now half the size for a HIGHER price. Best fish (eg Sea Bream) permanently off the menu. Chips now taste old and pre-cooked. Possibly not hand cut anymore. Saltier. Basic salad even less fresh tasting. No more sweet corn and even the sweet potato crisps on the top of each meal are gone!! Why?? Oh why?? Once delicious, fresh and wonderful stuff. Now rip off, trading on your good name, treating customers like fools. Gotta find another once a week haunt now! Kiwi fish and chips?

Can't go past the fish burger! & the grilled fish, and the superfood salad, and the tacos.. the list goes on... Good quality, good size meals and reasonably priced. It's a winner for me!

Going downhill. It is really sad - when this place first opened it was great - generous servings, delicious and fresh. Since then it has steadily gone downhill. The fish is often sloppy and the salad is a tasteless and wet. The place is VERY VERY overpriced. Honestly, don't bother unless you are desperate for fish and chips.

Speedy and reliable. Good for a quick mid week meal.

Everything was working fine. Good food and fast service; then, after the meal, when I went to the restroom I found out how the kitchen was messy and dirty. please do something about it. I don't want to feel disgusted again. Thx

Good food, if you're willing to wait for it. Ridiculously slow. Phone order ahead, or you'll hate this place.
Ben
The fish tacos are amazing. Very friendly staff too.

Nice food, lovely crunchy batter, not greasy.
Nice touches like British malt vinegar available on the tables. Will be back!

L-O-V-E this place!!! I got here about one every week/two weeks for the black bean taco or fish burger and they r both amazing! I can't even describe how good the fish burger is! And the chips - deliciously cooked, I know it's a big call but I'd say they're the best chips going around at the moment. Yum!! And the staff are always so lovely!

40 mins for "fast food" takeaway on a Tuesday night? WTF?
D
Great barra burger and lots of chips. Very filling, friendly staff.

Back for more. Been there at least 15 times. Always very satisfied, top class healthy& hearty grub. The Fitzroy shop leaves the Prahran shop for dead in all aspects.

Brilliant Fish and Chip Shop. We went there for dinner tonight and it was surprisingly good. The food was healthy, delicious, and refreshing. We had grilled salmon/salad and battered mahi mahi/salad/brown rice. It couldn't have been better. The waitress was absolutely lovely and extremely competent. The music was relaxed and we loved how the place has been decorated. Thank you, great dinner and experience.

Great Lunch deals. Good size servings, and I always get half chips and salad..
always stuffed afterwards.

Mmmm. Great veggie burger and Monteith's on tap! Potato cakes are awesome too!

Had a huge craving for fish and chips. Had been about 8 months since my last and it hit the spot! Gluten free menu is amazing! Chips are cooked great and thick! The tempura battered house fish was seriously perfect. Batter was crunchy and fish was beautifully cooked. I love the sweet potato chips too! Calamari wasn't the best but it wasn't chewy which is always a winner. Nothing about this meal was greasy either so I didn't feel disgusting after it (like you usually do after fish and chips). It was a well earned treat and enjoyed thoroughly.
Julia
2 tacos and a beer for 16 bucks works for me! The black bean tacos are lovely

Delish fish!. Can't fault this place. Great fitout, friendly staff and delish fish! Just don't mention it's a franchise or the Fitzroy nimbys will form a picket line!

Food is amazing had the box for 2 however it was way too expensive and service was terrible. Lady taking our order was rude and unhelpful. Paid $25 each for fish n chips and they don't even clear the plates, you have to take then up yourself!! Don't think I'll go back which is a shame cos the food was yum!
Daniel Barwick
Mushy, tasteless and overpriced fish and the salad swam in dressing. Great chips, nice batter and fun decor but not enough to justify coming back again. Yuck.
Martin Minaj Macumber
Very very slow. Took 20 mins for take away and it wasn't busy.
Very very expensive. $20 for a single serve of fish and chips is obscene. You would pay $5 anywhere else and get double the amount of food.
Staff are totally checked out.
While the food looks very pretty, it tastes very average, especially the chips.
Not worth the time or money.

That ain't blue grenadier! Some frozen crap, at fresh prices! What a total diaspointment that hooked think Thier customers are stupid
JP
Great fish and chips. We order the fish of the day-blue granedier with chips take away. The tempura batter was good, however I prefer grilled fish. I live the sweet potatoes thin chips they included in the pack. Great service too.
Sayaka
Good fish, great service which is a total rarity round here.. The servings are huge, the salad is delicious and comes with a yummy corn cob. Try the sticky rice/bok Choy side...mmmm....

Excellent Chips. Had the lunch box with fish and chips plus salad. It was very nice and an absolutely massive serve - good value at $10.50
The fish was succulent and tasty I couldn't tell what fish it was it was still nice though. The salad was good I liked the addition of pickled ginger and spanish onion to give a little excitement to the mixed lettuce and tomato. In the lunch box it comes next to the chips and under the fish and lemon, but I don't think this detracted from it really. The chips were the standout crispy on the outside and soft and silky on the inside really nice - I couldn't eat them all which is testament to the sheer amount of food and the fact that I know a fried chip is not healthy for me.
I wouldn't eat it too regularly, but I will likely return.
Sweet Tooth
Disappointing. Hooked presents as a fancy fish and chip restaurant, but frankly the quality doesn't warrant the reasonably expensive prices. The blue grenadier, at $8.50 each, was bland and watery. Its taste and texture was as if it had been sitting in a freezer for days and had been defrosted for our meal. The chips were good though. I understand the venue's objective of being seen to be a sophisticated fish and chip restaurant, but not having potato cakes on the menu is a big no no!

Give this place a miss.
Jeremy K
Below average fish and chips at a far above average price.
James
Have eaten at their Fitzroy store a few times now. I've only ever had blue grenadier (grilled) with chips and salad, and it has been consistently good to date. Staff are friendly, service is no fuss and fairly prompt. Overall I'd give it 4/5 spuds.
John Carver
Fancy fish and chips. Hmmmm. Why you taste so so for twice the price? Why you charge so much for sauce? Decent for a feed but not great when compared to some humbler fish and chip shops.

We be returning, arrr!. I had high hopes for Hooked, as I was pleased to had found a fish and chip shop offering gluten free options. I was informed that I could order fish, calamari and prawns all battered gluten free, so I opted for battered fish and calamari, and grilled prawns.
The fish was amazing, the batter was light, crispy, and tasted better than what I remember 'real' battered fish tasted like some five years ago before I was diagnosed with celiac.
The only criticism I have is that I felt the fish was a little too oily, and for a restaurant claiming 'healthy' fish and chips, I couldn't help but feel unhealthy with all that oil.
The sweet potato chips were a nice touch, and the tartare sauce is the sauce I definitely recommend choosing. I didn't taste the hand cut potato chips, so I can't comment on those.
The calamari was not as chewy as I was expecting it to be, and the batter accompanied it nicely. The grilled prawns tasted almost like grilled chicken to me, which I was fine with.

The staff were very friendly, and the surroundings are all in theme with many framed photographs adorning the walls, and a large painting of a mermaid in the eating area. Anchors, barrels and lifesavers are used as decoration in the small corridors leading to the bathroom and courtyard.

The prices are quite expensive for fish and chips, but a very nice night out indeed.
Alice
I LOVE CHIPS!!!!!. Hooked is set up really well, they have a cute sailor looking restaurant and has the most legendary cut chips, they have the takeaway boxes are really good and convenient surprisingly very easy to chuck out, just put all the leftovers on the top box and stack them all up!!

The food may be great but the price isn't but the chips and fish make up for it, I was also a bit disappointed that they didn't have potato cakes WHAT CHIPS SHOP DOESN'T SELL POTATO CAKES??? That was also kind of a let down, overall this is a very good place to go on a Friday night :)
Mochii
Pretty good fish & chips. Went for dinner, we had the House Fish (Grilled w/ brown rice) and the Box for One (Battered w/ half chips and half sticky rice). We enjoyed both the grilled and battered style fish and the sweet potato crisps that accompanied the meal. The calamari was pretty good too, easily bitten into, not chewy. However, both meals were quite salty and we couldn't help feeling thirsty after. Certain components of the meals was really oily as well such as the bokchoy (which is think is supposed to be the 'healthy' aspect?). Overall, still pretty good, might return if I happen to have a fish and chips craving.
Bron
I wake up dreaming about a hooked calimari lunchbox. You can be choose salad or rice or be healthy, but I always buckle and opt for phenomenal thick cut chippies.
Coconutty Goodness
I don't know what the hype is all about. It's not THAT good. Service was great but I won't go back. Way too much batter, I could hardly find my fish. The description of a 'light tempura batter' was so wrong. Calamari was good, my scallop still had the adductor muscle attached but once cut off was ok. Wasn't worth the $40 I spent for 2 people. I'd rather drive an extra 5mins and go to kiwi in east Melbourne. Far better for roughly the same price.
Hayley
Awesome atmosphere, yummy food, cheap as chips, good service! Recommend, especially if your a visitor to Melbourne.
Jess
...there just wasn't anything EXTRA special that grabbed us... They were yummy, but fairly standard.
Cherry The Chef
I'm always interested in places that do a bit of a twist on classic meals. The place is really cute, and set up like a vintage beach shack
Gastrology
What Hooked does, it does well. However, it doesn’t really do that much, which is why Hooked ultimately fails to delight.
Al' The Picky EAter
Hooked has been around for some time now serving simply made seafood. But who can pass up perfectly tempura-battered fish or a serving of school of prawns with a beer?
MEL: HOT OR NOT
"A chain fish-and-chippery is HOT" I hear you think dubiously. I too had my doubts until my friends recommended that I give Hooked a try. For health reasons I really need to eat more fish at the moment and with a lack of fishmongers around my home (I'm going to test-run a seafood delivery service soon, but that's another blog post), the next best option is a fish and chip shop. Hooked market themselves as a place for 'healthy seafood on the go'. So their menu includes grilled fish and brown rice and bok choy options for the same price as the standard battered fish and chips option (whereas many places will charge you more for grilled fish and the healthier sides). They also have salad available which is a little bit dearer than brown rice and bok choy/chips. If you go for the house fish (blue grenadier) and opt for brown rice and bok choy and your choice of house-made sauce, you can get a really healthy takeaway meal for $12.50. RM and I went down opposite ends of the health spectrum.
