I wanted to try something that I hadn't eaten before, so I went with African food. I did not know what to expect when I went in. There was a really nice vibe in the restaurant. The host was really polite and was smiling all the time. I had the Nyala special and Kuku Na Nazi.
Kuku Na Nazi was a chicken dish, full of spices, that came with couscous. I was blown away in the first bite that I had. The chicken and the curry had amazing flavors. The chicken was cooked beautifully. There was an exceptional mix of spices which gave the chicken an amazing flavor.
Nyala special was a beef stew that was served a mix of vegetables and Injera. Injera was sort of bread that came with it and I had never had anything like it. It had a different texture from everything I've ever had. It completely soaked the curry and the flavors from the beef and when you eat it you get all the juices and the curry with the bread in your mouth. It was just amazing. I thought the beef was a bit too heavy for me. There was a lot of oil and the beef itself was chewier than I would have liked.
Overall it was a great experience to try the new cuisine. I would definitely recommend you to go and give it a try. They accept Zomato gold, so you will get a complimentary dish depending on what you order, so that's always good. But I should warn you that the portions are huge so order accordingly.. :P
Nyala deserves to be packed out every night; but it is really good to be able to just rock up with some wine and have a great meal. If there are three, or more, people I would recommend the mixed entrees/dips, the meat combo and the vegetarian combo. If you only have two then go for the mixed entrees/dips and the two meat/two veg platter. It gives you a great combination of flavours. We eat here often and have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is great, the waiters terrific, the food always good and the prices very reasonable. If they have the music on Saturday it is well worth the extra $2 as well. If you ring them and give them a heads up you can have gluten free Injera as well. What I really like is the food is spiced for taste, rather than heat, but they do have dishes that can blow away your tastebuds if you want to. The waiter will be happy to guide you.

🔸The soft fluffy mountain bread was amazing with the dips and if you had any spare, perfect with the main curries as well 🤤
🔸Tasty sizzling lamb dish, love my lamb in chunks, great flavours
🔸Having a fresh salad was the perfect balance with all the different curries we had on the table
🔸The coconut chicken curry was my personal favourite, very creamy and coconut-y, LOVE IT
🔸The word Baboutie 😂 but more than that, it was also delicioussssssss, I was a little skeptical of the sultanas but it wasn't even something I noticed. Tasty tasty tasty!

Had a lovely dinner at Nyala. We loved the combo plates that allowed us to try different dishes from across the African continent. Excellent quality, rich in flavour. We will surely be back!
This place has a great setup in the heart of Fitzroy.
It’s on the the first level and after taking the stairs I first thing I realised was how spacious this place really is, it was raining outside and we sat on the table right next to the window overlooking Brunswick st so it was of a romantic setup.
Now with the food we ordered the meat combo and the first chicken main from the menu(no entrees). They were both delicious, the meat combo had a variety of flavours that made me feel I was having the full extent of what the place has to offer and I was very happy with it.
We were so satisfied after our meal that we were just talking and having a beer there and they treated us to a complimentary dessert, such a sweet thing to do on their part and for that gesture we can’t wait to go back again and will surely recommend.

We got the entree combo and the mains combo, so much food and so yummy. The flavour combinations were very different so you felt that you were getting a full scope of what the restaurant had to offer. It’s a great exotic experience, made me want to visit Africa.
The staff/owners are lovely, just being around them and chatting made me feel calm.
Dined late on a Saturday and found it was quiet and intimate. Asked the waiter to choose a selection for us. Less than 5 minutes later we were presented with four dishes on one plate.The Nyala Special (beef) was the hero, very tender and comforting. We were very impressed with the food and value. Four dishes, salad, rice, and injera for $30 which fed two hungry hippos. Only negative would be that the food was just warm but will be back for sure. Still talking about it today so its left me wanting more.
Very pleasant place. My husband and I went for dinner and the place is relaxing and romantic, music was very soft. Food was tasty and potions were very generous. Prices were reasonable too. We liked the place very much . I strongly recommend this place.
Decent first floor setting and lovely service and food. Excellent flavours and variety. Not sure how authentic the Ethiopian food served here is but whatever was served tasted very good. Pleasant service and reasonably quick turnaround times too. Only thing I can fault is the difficulty in parking. Highly recommended
