Great place! Spent the afternoon eating and drinking, all food was great, and just love the wine range- wine not overly cheap but an impressive range. Staff friendly, food fresh and just an overall great place. Favourite dish was the trout!
Enjoyed going here for dinner, sat out the back with our dog. Service was very friendly. They let bf taste some wines and advised on the wines too. They should've said though that the wine he took was A$20 per glass, as that's a lot of money for a glass of wine and it would be better to know in advance, instead of being surprised by it on the bill at the end. Lots of love for our doggy which is always appreciated. We had the eel pate, which was awesome. The pie was not so good, so wouldn't recommend that. Vitello Tonato and Chicken (free range) were really nice. Food was yum. We'll definitely be back!

Came here for lunch with a group of friends from work. There is a lovely large table at the back that comfortably sat 7 of us. It is a very small place with little seating area.
The food is very delicious and the service is good. However, the serving sizes are very small and many of us left peckish. The food is also fairly pricey considering the portion of the dishes.
Most of us opted for the goats cheese and spinach tart ($15.50) which varied in serving sizes despite all of us paying the same amount.
The baguette ($12.50) looked good and was decently sized compared to the other dishes. It was also better value for money.
For this price there are many other places close by for lunch that is much better value for money.
It is really a shame that the portions aren't bigger as the food is very nice.
Lots to admire here. Very nice spot. Superb selection of wines. Very good experienced staff. Very nice food. It is small and often crowded though in my experience. Some say that adds to the intimacy so enjoyment perhaps depends on one's mood. Not at all cheap but what you get is serious quality. There are some seriously good wines available here.
Wonderful small bistro with attentive service ( thanks Stef!) and simple food that allows the wine to shine. Could have benefitted from the addition of a few more options in main meals, but still a very pleasant experience!
....Would recommend this place for a date night!
Fantastic wine bar with a very diverse and eclectic selection of wines that can either be taken away or imbibed on premises for a fee. It is no surprise that you should be prepared to pay a premium for some of the premium wines. The courtyard out back is a particularly pleasant place for a couple of responsibly consumed wines. Also has a selection of spirits and the like, although wine is certainly the focus.
While the food menu is not extensive, what is on offer is always of good quality, and a lot of it is based on smaller dishes designed to accompany wines.
This was the perfect end to a blurry evening. The lovely New Zealandish man totally pandered to my naive foray into Cabernet franc without being condescending at all, and by gosh it was a good wine. Nice, comfortable way to finish off a night out with good friends (with good cheese to boot).
Reminders of Italy are not difficult to find in Melbourne. In many ways, Melbourne could lay claim to being one of the most Italian places outside of Italy. Gertude Street Enoteca is not classically reminiscent though of an Italian wine shop and bar. Not that it is trying to be Italian. This is a place that features the ingredients, the techniques, but is quintessential modern Melbourne. This local take has been around for years but the only time I’ve tried Brigitte Hafner’s food is at a winery in Red Hill over summer.
I wish this place was closer to my hood because I adore this place. Intimate, cozy, a bit eclectic, and you're surrounded by bottles and bottles of wine. A great place to stop for a drink and a light bite.
A very good place to try wines from the region, despite having wine from around the world.
The service is friendly and knowledgeable of what they do. has advantage sometimes have wine dinners.
Another major advantage is you can buy any bottle of wine cellar and drink it there with the price of cork $ 15 (perhaps the weak point because I think too much), yet not miss visiting this wine bar installed in one of the areas most in vogue melbourne.
Thanks for the suggestions ;)
Earlier today my favourite magazine joined forces with an Enoteca I’ve known about for years, but had never experienced, in the glorious surrounds of Avani Winery. There is not much more euphoric settings for drinking great wine and eating great food than a winery!
This is part of a month long pop-up venture for Gertrude Street Enoteca which judging by the full house, is a fantastic idea. You buy your ticket in advance, and rock up to find the three course blackboard menu on offer for the day.
Simple Elegance - Best on Gertrude St. If you're looking for a place to bring someone for an amazing food experience, or looking to impress a business partner, than this is the place to bring them.
I have been coming here for a while, and cannot recommend it highly enough. The food is delicious, the Vitello Tonnato is incredible, and will have you coming back for more.
The staff are always obliging, and Aurelie brightens the whole store up. She is engaging, friendly, and radiates good vibes throughout the establishment. The owners are always there and keeping a watchful eye on your dining experience to ensure everyone is in synch.
Like visiting an old friend. Having experienced Gertrude Street Enoteca while in Melbourne some years ago I was keen to revisit now I am living in Melbourne. The great atmosphere is as I remember it. I am gradually getting to know a few bars where I feel comfortable sitting alone while tasting some delicious food and interesting wine selections. These include the City Wine Shop in Spring Street and Movida and Movida next door. Gertrude Street Enoteca is now added to this list and will be a firm regular. Thanks James and Brigitte I have already introduced 4 new people to the delights of your lovely, very Melbourne bar :-) I look forward to receiving emails about special events. If I did not already have a regular commitment on Tuesdays I would have booked in for one of your winemakers dinners!
Would you like attitude with that?. I'm writing this with a heavy heart, as I love the GSE and have been going there for years, enjoying many excellent times there. I've recommended it to countless people, taken special friends there, and really been felt very blessed to have it as one of my locals, The food is always great, the wines interesting (if pricey), the ambience casual and charming, and the service...
Well, the service.
At best, the service is patchy. I have overlooked a lot over the years, because of all of the good things about this place. Today I wandered in and sat down well after the lunch crowd had gone. I spotted three staff and about three customers. And yet I was ignored. No-one dropped a menu on my table, no-one even acknowledged my presence for what seemed like an unreasonable amount of time (even by GTE's erratic standards). I was in a hurry, unfed and not in the mood for a bunch of languorous Gen Ys who seemed much more interested in themselves than the customers.
Still, being a GTE loyalist, I approached the young woman behind the counter and asked politely if I could have a menu. "I'm coming", she said, without even looking at me. I went back to the table and waited for another couple of minutes, menuless, foodless and waterless, while the three staff members attended to various apparently pressing matters, none of which involved actually serving customers.
So I walked out. I went to Fitzroy Kebabs around the corner, where I was greeted warmly by the young staff members, served promptly, and returned home with a delicious, fresh meal for $7.
I don't want to scrub Enoteca from my list of favorites, so I really hope they do something to improve the service. It really isn't that hard.
A touch of class. Gertrude Street Enotica is beautiful, simple and comfortable.
An intimate space welcomes you on trendy Gertrude Street surrounded by wine bottles as a design element throughout the cafe and a gorgeous court yard out the back perfect for summer mornings.
The coffee is divine, I enjoy coming here for a late night latte after dinner and the food is authentic Italian and simple. Perfect spot for a dinner date.
Have been coming here for years and just love the wine selection. Service is good and familiar, but always knowledgable. Food is always simple and rustic but packs a punch. Good for a quick bite or a long slow session.

We had coffee. J (latte): Boy howdy was this coffee strong. Like a slap in the face, this coffee woke me straight out of my Monday haze. The staff were nice (the wave goodbye was a nice touch) and place looked interesting enough for me to try and make a time to come back one day.
A (latte): Fancy pants place had fancy bottles everywhere and nice looking treats. Atmosphere was really relaxed and spacious, with a nice looking courtyard out the back for summer times. Staff v friendly. Coffee was on the bitter side, good (if you're into that) and tried to break through my Monday sads (almost successful). Nice.
K (latte): I like the wine bottles there, and I also noticed two empty bottles on the top shelf - in the middle of very nicely labelled bottles. The plant collection was good. Then I realised I was there for a coffee. It was an unforgettable coffee, a bit different.
Coffee and Food also. I have always treated this as a wine bar. Though the wine choices are very good I recently had a tasty lunch. The Leek and Goats cheese tart was delicious with especially fine home made pastry . The coffee was also outstanding. Staff were friendly and informative.
Gorgeous wine spot!. Had a few glasses of wine and some beautiful dishes of vitello tonnata and smoked trout dip before heading upstairs for our wine course. This place has a lovely atmosphere, knowledgeable friendly staff and a great wine by the glass list. Could have stayed for hours and we will return often.

Didn't stop for long but good wine list and charming and helpful staff.
Loved it. Great service and food. A little pricey, but great for a special low key occasion. Great selection of drinks. Will be back.
Every minute!. The coffee is pretty good and the wine list even better! Enjoyed every minute here!
Absolutely awesome wine list - the lady who served us was lots of fun also. Perfect for a few quiet drinks
Fantastic wine bar. Intimate, great food, excellent wines. Moderate prices. Great place to loose a couple of hours.
Wine to die for. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable which is always a plus for a wine dunce like me. I tried a fantastic unfiltered syrah and will be back for more.
Great local. I really like this place and even though I don't get there often I always enjoy the wine and service. Informative and friendly and a good pit stop on my way to my other favs in Gerturde St across the road. Recommend this gem.
Great small tastes and amazing wine and the staff are the bomb!!
Funky as you would expect from Gertrude St. A great selection of interesting wines available, all of which are available to try, at a price of course. GSE is essentially a bottle shop, so you choose ur wine and they will open and serve it to you for $15, which is quite reasonable given the extensive selection.
The food is just amazing, don't be afraid to ask for help- they really do compliment food and wine well.
Wow! Rarely speechless. Just leave room for the cheese platter. Will definitely be back
A great place for after 5 drinks with friends.
Radness. Super local. I like this place a lot. The foods solid, the staff are fun and the atmosphere hums. Oh yeah, they're hell bent on supplying you with the finest booze around.
I've had awesome little tarts, a great vitella tonata some braised deliciousness and possibly the best lasagne of my life. It consisted of some of the finest napoli sauce I've ever experienced. This was nestled in between a few fine layers of house made pastry. Oooohhhh yeahhh. And! Slotted in between. Salty, gooey buffalo mozzarella. Man, it's good. A fresh salad with a perfect dressing is brought out with good bread. Mate, your in heaven.
The wine list is superb, but costs an arm and a leg. I still love it. The coffee's good but takes forever to arrive. But hey, all in all, a rock solid performance, time after time. I like it
