Review Shifty Chevre - Fitzroy

Marc W
This place is too good. It's the sort of place where you don't want the night to ever end. We shared a wonderful cheese and meat platter paired with great wine, followed by a cheese fondue and cheesecake. Loved the dark lighting and cozy tables. Loved the local art displayed inside. Loved the fun friendly staff. Perfect evening!

Cheese, cocktails and delightful decorations. Well worth a drink or two. Try the rosemary, maple, old fashioned. It’s outstanding.

The espresso Martinis are some of the best in town, the food is incredibly good, and the drinks are very reasonably priced. I booked out the venue to host a 30th and they really went above and beyond to take care of us. Definitely stop in and check it out, the beer garden at the back is a hidden gem.

Pros: Good helpful service from the waiters. Cute place. Surprising toilet Normal: food Cons: Racist remarks from the guy who looked like the owner/manager. Add to that he said they don't give water at that place when asked. I had to remind him that it's a legal requirement

Such a cute place! Full of character, art, good music and drinks. They really did a good job. I can see the passion and personality of the people who run this little pearl in the heart of Fitzroy. Highly recommended for a good drink and chat with friends or lovers or both!

3.5 stars really. Good atmosphere, great customer service and the wine selection is good. What's the problem then? Mainly the food. It's good food, don't get me wrong, but I expected better and it simply didn't deliver. The food here is more suited for light snacks than actual meals and that coloured my experience badly. Keep that in mind and you should love this place.

I came here with a friend on a Sunday night. Not busy at all but very friendly and attentive staff. Good choice of music. Definitely a bar not a restaurant - wine, cheese, olives and charcuterie boards which were lovely. Menu was small so it was nice to not agonise over what to get. Very cool bathroom! Wish I took a photo

If you are a cheese and wine person, you cannot miss out on this great venue. Best to book though, as it gets busy. The cheese and wine is mostly French and is just out of this world. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. An absolute must if you are in Fitzroy. An odd highlight is the lovely bathroom...!

Shifty Chevre was an unplanned experience yet probably one of my highlights - with a perfect note to end our trip down south. Stumbling across glowing cheese displays out front on Brunswick street, we were easily drawn in. Its casual, cosy and unpretentious and the outdoor seating is recommended to soak in life on the main drag. Its a no fuss cheese bar, with a quirky and cosy space inside with mixed areas depending on the mood you're seeking at whatever time of day.

We delighted in a mix of charcuterie and weekly cheese board, and discovered a sensational beaujolais which seems to be following us around back home in Sydney. The staff were obliging and keen to look after us, making up a few alternatives to our seconds based on preferences from the first board. That being said, these are preferences at at no point were we let down with quality or flavours. At a cheese bar it would be hard to make a bad pick. Some of the produce is exclusive, and some of our favourites cannot be purchased elsewhere it seems.

Beautiful little cheese and wine place. I went here with some friends, there were four of us, it was really busy but the waitress found us a table in the back garden. Te atmosphere was really nice and relaxed. The food and the wine were perfect! I absolutely loved the cheesecake! Would definitely recommend!

Nestled in a cosy, narrow corner shop, Shifty Chevre is a cheese lover’s paradise. As well as its food offerings, they have cheese for sale, on display in their front cabinet. There’s also the French-style raclette, where slices of cheese are placed on individual paddles and inserted into an oven-like appliance. Melted cheese is poured over our potatoes and cured meats such as prosciutto, cured ham and French salami.

Excellent French restaurant with a great variety of meals for various budgets. Lovely staff. Would recommend the croques and the salads. Good vego options.

As a french it was amazing to find some very good cheese over there !! Had the raclette ! Which is not very expensive and you're not hungry anymore after it ! The service was perfect very nice and friendly

OMG. CHEEEESE. 'Nuff said. When the menu says that they serve a bubbling cauldron of cheese, you know it's going to be a good night. It's a great place to go with a group, with a cheese fondue or raclette in the middle of the table, and lots of things to dip in. I don't think I've ever been so close to bliss!

Perfectly poached eggs, soft and molten, and smothered in deliciously creamy hollandaise. The ham hock was the highlight, though – piled high under the egg, I couldn’t really tell what I was getting into, but breaking it up with my fork, it was soft and tender and juicy, with the most delicious smokey flavour. Oh, and that pork crackling…
Antoniette
We went for dinner and were disappointed. Raclette wasn't great. We were on one of the little tables (with the uncomfortable chairs) so couldn't have the hot stove - so the cheese was melted for us. They do have a really great beer menu. And I would go back for booze and cheese plates or Brunch. (Both of which I have tried and really liked in the past) - But not dinner. Another plus - it's the sunny side of Brunswick street and they have outdoor tables.

*Being a small place - book ahead if you do want a table on a Friday or Saturday night.*

Came here for a quick bite to eat. Chai latte could have been better, lacked that chai punch and was luke warm. Had the smashed avocado with a side of bacon. A great smashed avocado made even better with merediths goats cheese mixed through it. A great little place to try out, they also have a cheese night coming up!

Cheese fondue is the best I've had in the world, tried in France, Netherlands and Melbourne. Cheesecake is the worst I've had, it's really disgusting. Try them for yourself!

Went here for a birthday last night & didn't really know what to expect but we were pleasantly suprised. From the minute we walked in the staff couldn't of been more help & considering we had a large table the service was top & very efficient.

Can't go wrong with cheese & matched beers/wine but the menu is fantastic & I think I would consume everything on there. We opted for the Mac n cheese with bacon which was absolutely delicious & huge (probably a good idea to share) and also the chorizo, the pork crackling & the halloumi which were also very tasty.

This place has a very nice ambience & is very cosy, perfect for those cold winter nights in Melbourne. Do yourself a favour & visit this place

Love this place!
The service was great and the atmosphere was really welcoming and homely. The cheese boards were great but the Croque Monsieur variations were next level - a must try!
Wine list is extensive and incredibly well priced. There is plenty of variation but also an emphasis on the basics done well. Overall, an excellent afternoon at Shifty Chevre!

Really nice place to try out cheeses with accompanying wine. You can buy many french food & cheeses to take away too. Nice cosy ambiance. Staff very friendly & helpful. Wide selection of wine & staff helping in matching wine with cheeses. Highly recommended!!!

RNIS tried the cheeses as part of the Brunswick st All In festival but they paid for their own drinks in a separate visit. This festival is a free festival for all and it featured many activities and events for everyone along the shopping strip. The service staff are amazing and the place is very cozy. This one was a very intimate cheese tasting event which went on for about half an hour. Here we sat at the same table with Rukmal from the Plus ones who were also checking out the event on their own accord. We tasted four cheeses each with a very different personality. Some people enjoyed a wine or two. I generally like the saltier cheeses as they were more flavoursome. I loved the blue vein cheese at the end as it was strong in flavour. This would work well with the fig

This place is great! Been here a number of times and it never fails to impress. Dishes are delicious, wine and cheese range is great, and service is exceptional... Friendly and attentive without being overpowering. It is also worth checking out their wine and cheese tasting events. Great way to try different wines and the cheeses on offer are always just that little bit different.

Stumbled across this place on a Saturday lunchtime, it looked super cute so we thought we'd stop and have a bite. Our waitress was fantastic, very cheerful and attentive. The food was yum. I'll need to come back and try the cheese platters to get a real feel for what they have to offer.
Brad
Initially poor service but this improved and the food was very good. I wouldn't recommend sitting out the back as you may get forgotten about

I cannot recommend Shifty Chevre enough. The staff were fantastic and so accommodating. Recently had a hen's day here and they managed to put together an awesome cheese and wine feast for 20 people at a 'per head' price. Fantastic. Also had lunch here which was great. Good quality wine and cheese. I will be back.

Weekend brunch + cheese + coffee + French accents = satisfaction. The Croque Madame did exceed my expectations - essentially a tasty Croque Monsieur with a beautifully poached egg on top. My parter had the potato and cheese dish which was very rich, but then what do you expect.

I must say I'm surprised the reviews of this place are not higher, not to say that they are all negative. I'm not saying this is French fine dining at its best, but it is all relative - for what you pay, this place hits the mark.

We came here for lunch and it was fantastic. I had the haloumi stack and my boyfriend had the cheese, bacon and mushroom sandwich. Both with a glass of their delicious pinot grigio!

It was a stinking hot day outside (42 degrees) and the Shifty Chevre was a great place to hide from the heat and pass the time with some delicious cheesy dishes! A very nice laid-back atmosphere.

Prosciutto, salami, cornichons with melted raclette cheese on top, so good!!!! Croque Monsieur had crispy bread, it was the bomb diggity!!!!

In the heart of Fitzroy on the ever cool Brunswick St, is the holy grail for cheese lovers, the Shifty Chèvre! The Shifty Chevre is a cool little spot that’s more of a night-time bar destination, but we were pleasantly surprised that they also do breakfast. As far as we’re concerned it’s always time for cheese and the more the better! This is a restaurant that’s all about the cheese. Even so it has a lovely atmosphere with light windows and dark corners. There’s plenty of space and something quirky to take in wherever you look.We loved the cheese knifes with breakfast – it’s such an elegant piece of cutlery. Dare I say it again? This venue is all about the cheese! The coffee here was okay, nothing exciting and a bit hot and over-extracted for our tastes. Coffee doesn’t really seem to be their thing.Croque monsieur’s however are! It’s basically the ultimate toasty, served with a bechamel sauce on top and with loads of cheese inside. This particular beauty was a mix of three indulgent cheeses, as well as bacon and egg. It had a rich and meaty flavour with delicious, creamy bechamel on top. The toast was thick but well cooked and easy to cut. Finally another croque monsieur – this time filled with a goats curd, honey and ham. A delightful combination of sweet, rich and creamy flavours which made for a heavenly mouthful. It was complemented by a smear of home made balsamic on the plate, a light bite to cut through the richness of the cheese. Like the bacon and egg toasty this was an utterly indulgent breakfast, so creamy and a huge serving.

This place is so cool. I love their cheese selection and they have some very fun weekday events/specials. They have a good vibe and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Surprisingly good coffee too.

Great Ambience, very Frenchy, loved everything there, specially the atmosphere, have to go there a nice Sunday brunch, highly recommended to all.

Great list of drinks with fantastic pairings of beer, whisky and wine there is something for everyone. The dinner menus are well priced and delicious.

Knowledgeable and friendly staff serving some of the best cheese I have had in Melbourne.

S H I F T Y ☆ C H E V R E
For all cheese lovers, I highly recommend this gem of a place! Every item on their menu has cheese as an ingredient. Ideal place for brunch. They also do a great smashed avocado. ✌ @foodiesguidetosydney

We went here for Vegan Day Out earlier in the year. I love cheese, and my partner is vegan, so it's pretty rare that we indulge together. However, Shifty Chevre had vegan cheese meals, so I could enjoy some wonderful goats cheese and smoked salmon.

I'm not sure if they always have the vegan cheese or if it was just a Vegan Day Out thing. But I adored the meal I had, and my partner was very happy too. Great service, and a lovely atmosphere.

Loved it here! The guys were so knowledgeable/helpful for a newbie to wine and cheese and the cheese platters and wine selections were to die for. The big bluey platter with wine was lovely and affordable. The atmosphere 10/10 and not too loud. I will come here again :)

Cheese deliciousness. Warm, friendly and a beautiful ambience. Wine list very reasonable with a delicious selection! Love the many cheese tasting options and pairings with the wine. Will definitely be back to this gem!

We were looking forward to the "unique experience" of having raclette with friends, as promoted on its menu. It should be noted that when you make a booking for 6 or more people, you will not be able to enjoy the experience of raclette and fondue (for some reason, the larger table does not permit this). Instead cheese that has been melted in the oven will be brought to you. It was disappointing, and even more so when the staff insisted that it would "taste the same anyway", instead of being apologetic.

Awesome welcome as soon as you walk through the door, great eclectic warm space, comfy seats, and staff who genuinely want to help you have a lovely time! These guys know their food and wine! Yum!

Brilliant range of cheese! Now with matched wines. Cozy couches, very French atmosphere coupled with French music. A great place for a drink.

Shifty Chèvre is pleasant and efficient with reasonable coffee, but seems to lack warmth which may, or may not suit everyone...especially given the infinite choice available in its immediate vicinity.

We chose a table with a hotplate - I guess we knew melted cheese was inevitable and were whisked away to alpine France. Cosy and homely we could have been in a warm chalet after a hard day on the piste!

Great coffee and innovative food.. Great coffee, the best I've had in a while.
Innovative food for breakfast and lunch.
The owners have done well to make the place warm and interesting and welcoming.

Great dinner at this cheesebar!. We came after i heard about this cheesebar and wanted a sneaky cheese hit, but ended up staying for an amazing dinner in this cosy little place - turns out they do more substantial food than just cheeseboards. So cute and warm! Wine and cheese was great, service very friendly and the food was amazing! We will be back

Great night out on the cheese!. I came in last week planning for a sneaky cheese hit and ended up staying for this amazing cheese & chicken dinner dish! Really simple but delicious and went super with the wine they had on offer. Great service and a warm cosy place for a wintery night. Highly recommend!
MEL: HOT OR NOT
Brunswick Street Fitzroy is saturated with eateries, but it’s only till recently that it’s gotten its own wine and cheese bar. Bienvenue Shifty Chèvre!

The French-themed cheese haven opened late last year but only recently got its liquor licence. The licence means it can now serve cheese with its natural partner, wine, and they have started opening evenings.

Lovely little place, great cheese and wine! Perfect location, right next to rose st artist market.

Brilliant place.
Friendly helpful staff, great food, amazing wine to go with it all. A must visit.

Great place - I've ordered the raclette and it was exactly as the raclette I used to eat in France. Great tiramisu for dessert too
I will definitely come back

Excellent value, service and product. I love the concept and the execution of this place. I'm a Francophile, and am totally in love with cheese. Shifty Chèvre has been fantastic the couple of times I've been. They provide excellent value cheese takeaway boxes, as well as in house cheese platters and cheese inspired dishes. I highly recommend it!

Great value, delicious menu. I bought the Australia Day hamper for $30 and got four generous portions of great Aussie cheeses. Love it! Could barely finish the whole thing over an Aus day picnic.
Coffee is consistently good (it can be hard to find places that does long macs right) and you can't really complain with the breakfast offerings for under $10 when breakfast at most places in Fitzroy can easily clock in at $20 or more when you order a coffee or two. Would totally recommend this place to friends! Bravo Team Shifty Chevre!
Wikedwitchofthewest
Boring cheese. I don't mind paying $20 for a cheese plate if it's either a) delicious or b) generous, this was neither. Pretty blah, to be honest. Also, almost every dish was pork based, so if you're not a ham lover, perhaps move along!
Eddie
Great coffee and amazing cheese! Cute fit out with a fun and friendly vibe. A definite must see

Love this place!! Great vibe- funky. Great look. Great menu options, healthy and really yummy! Staff really friendly and accommodating - it was just after 12md and they kindly let me have the amazing Welsh Rarebit breakfast item! Coffee was best in Melbourne and smoothie delicious! Highly recommend! Some great cheeses and kitchen/food items to purchase too!

France in Fitzroy. Genuine French cheese expertise. Lunch baguettes are good value, and they have an interesting range of cheeses, they have the standard ones you'd expect and some new ones I had fun discovering. When they get their liquor licence this place will be an authentic little bit of France in Brunswick St.
Nic Cril
Shifty Chèvre is a cheese bar and cafe...At the heart of Shifty Chèvre’s menu is un-fussy, cheese-based (naturally) dishes. Right now, no menu item is above $15 (lunch items are around $10). A grazing plate with a few of our cheeses will set you back $10, but customers are welcome to splurge on their rotating selection of cheeses and they’re more than happy to put together takeaway packs. Many have been sourced all the way from France and there are a few local ones as well.

I had a good deal of the Emmental in my salad, but when had on its own, I could really appreciate its fruity and mildly nutty aroma, and its wonderfully soft and slightly chewy texture. It’s pretty much a jack of all trades when it comes to cheese. As nice as the Emmental was though, I couldn’t stop eating the mild, creamy wedge of Brie. It was absolutely out of this world when combined with a smidge of quince paste, making for a dessert that rivals the best of cheesecakes.
