Review Hinoki Japanese Pantry - Fitzroy

Adrian L
Freshly made sushi and sashimi for takeaway only. Also has other Japanese pantry items for sale. Suggest pre-order online or phone (if can get through). Otherwise may have wait times up to 2hrs for walk in orders

This was the freshest sushi I’ve had in a long time. The sashimi melted in my mouth, the cuts of fish were perfect, the bite-sized sushi rolls were packed with flavour. They’ve got heaps of variety on their menu so you’re bound to find something you like. Customisation is also available for events. The value is incredible for the quality you get. You can order online ahead of time for pick-up or order in store and browse the endless range of Japanese goodies while you wait. We ordered: 🍣 Sushi Sashimi Medium 🍣 Nose Maki Mix 🍣 Nose Maki & Inari Deluxe This place is a cult favourite for a reason, the lines outside are no joke. I highly recommend for some authentic sushi and sashimi. I already can’t wait to make my next order!

Beautiful sushi and sashimi fr Hinoki. Placed my order online and it was efficient and very affordable. Satisfied with the quality of food here and the grocery store stocks a massive selection of Japanese food which is cheap! Would definitely recommend this place.

Best place to get your Japanese supplies. Love their kitchenware and their Japanese drinks selection. Got a hibachi there and it’s the best thing ever.

Hinoki Pantry is absolutely superb, they have a great range of Japanese products good service and most importantly amazing food. I cant recommend this place enough, I've been all over for sushi and I think this is hands down the best in Melbourne!

This is a very authentic and very hip Japanese pantry store. They also have very good quality fresh sushi platter takeouts. Couldn't believe how many people came to this store and it was packed. The quality of the products are excellent, authentic Japanese. Highly recommended and would come back again for the Sushi!!!

Sushi platters are always great at Hinoki. A slight premium but you get some very nice & fresh sushi options. The mix sushi platter is always a favourite of mine. Combine this from their range of saké and you're all set! They also stock a good range of Japanese products, snacks, drinks, crockery and cooking items. Hinoki is my go to for sushi and anything Japanese.
Sherry Fang
Amazing sushi, top quality, fresh! The supermarket itself has a great selection of japanese goods!

Love this place! Fresh sushi, perfect portions, great and quick service.

Insta: melbfoodie_mark
YT: MelbFoodieMark
-
Grabbed Nigiri Sushi Set. One of the best sushi venues in Melbourne - kept simple and focused on the freshness of their ingredients. As soon as you take a bite, it's evident that they use very fresh ingredients (no pre-made bs). Absolutely delicious :) Rice was also tasty and easily dispersed in my mouth as I chewed. Very reasonable price considering the quality of their sushi.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: Cute Japanese pantry on Smith St, extremely popular and fresh sashimi.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: Literally one of the best sashimi and sushi places I've tried in Melbourne. The platters are so affordable for the amount and quality of the sushi. The staff here are so friendly and they sell a wide range of Japanese snacks which makes me miss Japan even more. 🍙🍣🐟 Can't wait to come back to try the other sushi packs!

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: The packs where it looks really aesthetic with the sashimi on top, they are filled with sliced carrots in the middle..so by the time you’ve finished the pack, it starts tasting like carrots instead.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for sashimi and salmon – the fish is definitely fresh and delicious.
Rating: 4.5
With lockdown in place, got my wonderful boyfriend to pick this platter up for me. Service is quick and easy with online ordering and friendly staff. Can’t say much since the sushi platter says it all. So much variety with such a pretty layout that gets my pallet prepared.

Each sushi is treated with such precision and care, that the taste doesn’t falter after another bite. If I had to pick, the star of the platter was the inari sushi range. It was the unique presentation of the inari that is made very differently compared to other sushi restaurants. The balance of flavours was executed excellently, with the sweetness accentuating and intertwining with the umami of the prawn, chicken or mayo.

Another favourite was the salmon aburi with the cream cheese. I love my cream cheese, and I love my salmon - what a better way to combine these two different worlds of culture.

The salmon and prawn were so juicy and fresh which did the classic nigiri sushi justice. I, however, am not really a wasabi person so the wasabi they add to keep the sushi intact was just a bit overpowering for me, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

We shared the platter between 3 people, and price was average; I wouldn’t say it tastes drastically phenomenal compared to regular sushi, but you can see the distinct quality of their fish. I also wished they had available sushi with fried elements, since I’m a foodie with an eye for fusion of culture and taste. But would come back for a nice picnic or catch up with friends!

Value: 4
Food: 4.5
Service: 5

Stop putting wasabi on the sushi...I never asked for it

Such a pretty platter and not expensive at all for fresh sushi. The salmon sushi (pictured on the left) was so yummy and the favourite of the platter.

Their seaweed salad that you can get since they’re also a convenience store was really nice and refreshing and should be bought too which is just located in the open fridge.

Would definitely come back here again to try different sushi’s on the menu.

Taste: 4/5
Value: 5/5
Satisfaction: 4/5

The best and most affordable sushi I’ve ever had! The fish is so delicious and fresh, I really can’t fault it at all!

Another day and another review deleted by a Zomato. My latest review has been deleted again.

Anyway the service at this Japanese pantry is always lovely and very Japanese. They have a small selection of groceries which are fantastic.

I brought a Sushi Nigiri large day which was soo good. Think fresh salmon, salmon belly, fresh tuna, fresh prawns, sushi and egg.

This was just delicious and my partner and I just devoured it hahaha .... more more more please!!

It was a great meal, and I was so excited to see that this place is still open at the moment for take away. Happy days.

This place is definitely worth a visit. Pre order is best so you pick it up n go.

May 2016
I've read great things about this place so I took my friend here tonight. This place is like a Japanese pantry, as you walk in, you order your food and then you can browse the isles to buy some Japanese food, either fresh or frozen.

We ordered the large Sushi Mix with some unagi (eel) and we waited whilst it was made fresh to order which was about 15 minutes tonight.

The sushi was served on a big take away platter and it was really fresh and tasty. We really enjoyed this dinner tonight and the opportunity to browse some Japanese food in the pantry.

I brought some sake but you can't drink it on site, even with dinner as this place is unlicensed. So we had take away lol

One thing to remember, this place closes early so check the opening times or you may miss out.
Simmyeats.Melb
I visited recently, I have only had take away but not eaten in. I was expecting a restaurant, however this is more of a supermarket with a side sushi place. Nevertheless, a great place to visit which was very unique

A great menu, I couldn't decide on what to order. My sushi rolls were great, very fresh ingredients and I loved the freshness of the side of sashimi I ordered too.

I will definitely be back when in the area.

Can’t get any better

The fresh and exquisite sushi those professionals churn out oh so effortlessly is unmatched. No sushi place in the north comes close to this humble institution. I am always in awe of their quality and consider it a cardinal sin to not drop by when I’m on smith street. They are artists!
They also have this red bean / matcha icecream sandwich you never knew you needed. Get on it!
Sophia Trinh
Very delicious! Could eat so much if I had more money.
Jonathan Ong
good, fresh sushi. reasonably priced. there’s not much place to sit and eat. great food for a hot day!

Have been a frequent customer here - I absolutely adore the sushi. The nose maki mix, hotate hollandaise and Nasu dengaku are DIVINE.

Definitely one of my favourite Japanese sushi shops in Melbourne!

P.S. the staff members are more than happy for you to BYO containers so definitely do that!!
ElCompass
Definitely the place to get sushi/sashimi on Smith St! Fresh and delicious! You can also pick up your favourite Japanese snack while you're there as they are also a Japanese grocery store
Jen + Larry
Our regular sushi joint, Hinoki delivers fresh sushi made right in front of you. A cute concept store where you can browse for Japanese groceries while you wait. Be sure to check out rotating selection of instant ramen.

The salmon don is a must get favourite, seared pieces of salmon atop a bowl of warm rice.
For all lovers of salmon, also try the number 40 (Salmon aioli) and number 41 (Salmon aburi)

Tastiness: 5/5
Value: 5/5
Satisfaction: 6/5

Pictured:
- Salmon Don
- Salmon Nigiri (number 11)
- Salmon Aburi (number 41)

I have lived in the area for three years now but for some reason have overlooked this place, simply walked pass it on many occasions without giving it a second thought. As the old adage goes don’t judge a book by its cover so fool be me. The sashimi and sushi here is simply amazing and certainly better than many fine dining Japanese restaurants here in Melbourne. Even after being refrigerated in the fridge for a few hours, the sushi rice was still soft and glutinous - our friends thought we just got it right before they arrived. The seasoning was spot on too, just enough acidity to offset against and compliment the richness of the fish. Hinoki is definitely not your average sashimi joint that’s for sure - the prices will also leave your pocket singing for joy as well.
Megan Kong
My favourite Japanese place for fresh and delicious sushi. Value for money. The sashimi and sushi platters are just great. Do phone and order in advance because it takes a bit of time to prepare
Ptle
Love this place! Defs go here if you want a taste of Japan! A half grocery and sushi restaurant. One of the best quality/ restaurant/fine dining quality sushi for a fair price. It also has a vending machine so highly recommend the canned drinks you can buy hot/cold. We got the hot milk tea and coffee - perfect for winter and some snacks from the grocery.
Cathleen
Very good quality sushi . Especially the Unagi, love them so much. highly recommend for having a party or visiting friends or family. Easy and delicious, never disappointed by anyone.

Hinoki Japanese pantry is probably the most delicious, affordable sushi I’ve had in Melbourne. It definitely is not the cheapest but for the quality you get, it’s worth every cent you spend on it. I ordered the sashimi platter, and with two people, it was extremely filling.
The store is owned by Japanese people and the care and precision they put into the sushi is admirable.

Will be coming back because the quality is impeccable.
Gabrielle Ebsworth
There is a reason this place is on Melbournes best Japanese list- it is truly a mouthwatering experience. A bodega styled store, you can order your sushi and sashimi at the front and whilst you wait, browse the shelves for some Japanese pantry stock. The sashimi is a must try on my list, the salmon absolutely melts in your mouth and the sushi is also great.
Jasmine
Hinoki presents such a fun concept. A joint restaurant and small Japanese restaurant means you get to wander and explore the novelty while waiting for your sushi order to be prepped.

Ordered:
🍆 Nasu Dengaku (v): eggplant sushi with dengaku sauce ($13.50)
🍣 Sashimi large: but actually medium size ($35.00)

Review:
🍆 Eggplant sushi was much more flavoursome to eat if you scrape the eggplant off and have it separately 🤣. The rice was a little tooo overpowering here.

🍣 Sashimi was pretty decent. It almost still tastes like nothing - just a smattering of different textures. BUT having it with a smige of wasabi made it a much better experience! Gave the sashimi a punch 👊and more depth. But now I need a break after eating a box full of it 😝.

Tables backed against Hinoki's wall means you'd have to sit next to your lunch partner instead of opposite them (which makes it difficult to gaze into their eyes hahaha).
With a limited number of seating available, I'd be cautious about eating in at peak lunch hour. However, there's shops all the way down Smith st so walking around doesn't seem like a bad idea either!
ALICE ⚡️
Hinoki Japanese Pantry is a cute little convenience store located in Fitzroy

They have an amazing array of Japanese snacks and drinks and the sushi here is worth every single penny!

The sushi was freshly made and the staff here are so friendly.

Only downside would be they don’t have a lot of seating area if you’re planning to eat there
Michi
Japanese groceries with sushi joint in one. Sushi served here is pretty different with carrot fillings. Taste healthier than your typical sushi. Worth a visit
JOELLE
Finally popped in to this cute store after being in my to go list for a long time!

The place is really cute and well kept. There isn't a lot of place to sit, since it's more of a quick lunch spot. Nevertheless, nice and chill ambience with great lighting.

I had their nigiri and salmon aioli pack. The fish were definitely fresh and cut was satisfying! It's been in the fridge for a while so it's bit cold but I guess that's unavoidable. The next time I'm there I'll probably ask them to make fresh ones. The salmon aioli was good but not my favorite, as the middle was full of carrots, I'd expected some fish or roe (maybe I expected too much) and yeah it was a tad bit weird of combination. I dipped them all in soy sauce and wasabi for flavor though.

Lastly, a really cute place for a quick and fresh sushi fix or japanese groceries, with friendly staffs!

( follow for more!✨)

xx,joelle.
Eatwithbonny
Great place for sushi and sashimi. Seafood here is really fresh and sushi 🍣 are done really well. The store is a combination of Japanese grocery and sushi bar. The store is not fancy but small and cozy.

Will I be back? For sure!

Hinoki Japanese Pantry had been on our ‘to try’ list for a while now. We generally go out of our way and make an effort to travel to these places on our list, but fortunately on this occasion we bumped into this place while walking along Smith Street, Fitzroy! I guess some things are meant to be, and we did not hesitate to rush in.

Came here for a random Japanese lunch while walking around the area. What a pleasant surprise! The sushi we ordered had fresh sashimi (yum!) and was good value (huge portion). the sushi rice wasn’t as yummy though, I found it very bland in taste. Sashimi made up for it tho. Unsure why they r stingy with fresh wasabi and soy sauce - we even have to pay extra if we wanted packed sauce and wasabi... why!! The range of Japanese goodies in the store was also very exciting for my stomach and I. It’s a good store concept, wish this was in my area!

Rating: 3.5 - 4
Food:
- King fish yuzu (nosé maki pack): no strong fishiness even though king fish tends to be quite heavy in flavour (compared to other fish). Not mushy at all.
- Salmon aburi (nosé maki pack): probs my fav, creamy and smokey at the same time.
- Sashimi small: overall good enough but the portion was just so so (or maybe I was being a little piggy :P). But I didn’t like the tuna in here as it didn’t taste as fresh as the other fish.
I thought the portion would be plenty to fill two people but turned out it was just enough. Not upset about that but I’d definitely go for the platters next time as they also look amazing.

Price: reasonable price overall, I think it would be even better with the big platters.

Service: My friend did takeaway so I didn’t know what the staff are like.

Ambience: (like above)

Quality is always A-grade and melts in your mouth would be a buzzfeed worth it series winner and the staff are so lovely!! Also don’t forget to check out their chilled pickled salads, snacks, drinks and ingredients you can buy to make at home :)

Best sushi I’ve eaten! Everything was so fresh and delicious. It can be a bit pricey for 1 person, but the food justifies the price. Highly recommend this place!
Ronnie Chan
Best sushi and sashimi in town with affordable prices! Sashimi were fresh and sushi were yum. Have been here a few time, love this place and will surely be back.
Angelat
It’s cheap. It’s phenomenally tasty. There is a huge variety to chose from. It’s a winner. It’s front half cafe back half supermarket. Chose from the menu ( thank god for pictures which help you chose) or prepared. Order where the chefs and menu are. Then over to the cashier to pay. Then enjoy!
Mike Gomez
The most amazing sashimi. I frequent Hinoki a couple of times a week as I live down the road. The fresh fish supplied by JFT (one of the biggest importers of Japanese products in Australia) is definitely the best reason to visit them as the quality is always top notch. Would highly recommend this place.
JJ
Go for the sashimi, leave with the sake and packets of ramen, Japanese kit kat and some Calbee chips. The sashimi is fresh as. Better than what you ll find at most restaurants (pls dont compare it $200 a head restaurants) and reasonably priced. Their sashimi and raw fish sushi/nigiri is good and cheap. $15 for approx 16 pieces of sashimi is a steal. You'll easily pay double at an izakaya and it wont be as fresh. The cooked sushi is good, but can be a tad pricier than your local sushi hand roll place but the quality is there. Not exactly suited for dinning in, but you ll usually find a seat for 1 to 2 pple on weekends.
Snowflower
Love the sushi here. The makis were very fresh and the sushi rice were soft and tasty. It’s actually a mini mart that sells Japanese stuff as well. Service were very courteous and friendly. Would recommend if you are after some quick and tasty Japanese food for takeaway. Note: Not much seating inside.
Karma Clarke
Beautiful freshly made sushi - made to order or you can pick up a quick take away box. I go for their massive platters- and have a peruse around their awesome grocery store while I wait. Their sushi is divine.

🍽 We were craving for some sushi and thought it’ll be great to feed on whilst basking in the sun at Fitzroy Gardens. We ordered the salmon aburi, hotate hollandaise and california roll & inari deluxe. We also got some sides (jellyfish, seaweed salad & octopus) which we found on the mart side of the store. The chef was also kind enough to place all of our sushi in one big plate instead of little separate containers. The sushi here are all made to order so it was really fresh~! We enjoyed it however we weren’t quite a fan of the carrots in our sushi. I think that was the only downside of it :( Plus the green tea was a must to subsidise the saltiness of the octopus salad. Anyway, it was a great experience! - JH

Oh how I adore sushi. When I was living in Adelaide it wouldn’t be uncommon to find me consuming this sublime delicacy at one of my all time favourite restaurants – Wasai. It was here (combined with two weeks in Japan) that I developed my passion for this Japanese exquisiteness.

Hinoki Japanese Pantry is a supermarket/sushi bar in Fitzroy, that I heard is a top contender for best sushi in Melbourne (without the high prices of Minamishima).
Piggy 小猪
Beautiful place for japanese stuff shopping and also their sushi and sashimi is really fresh and tasty. The chef makes your sushi or cuts your sashimi to your order, everything is so nice and fresh. LOVE IT!
Hungry Big Potato Bear
I usually come here to buy groceries such as kakuni, dumpling sheets, japanese snacks and fresh salmon so I can have sashimi at home. I have only dined there once and their sushi is not too bad.
Kat Blanche
Bless this place. We ordered one of the larger sushi/sashimi combo platters early in the morning for our picnic, and were far from disappointed. It was done quite quickly and the flavour plus rice to fish ratio was wonderful!
We will definitely come back again!
Steven Gu
Hinoki Japanese pantry in Fitzroy. Definitely a great place to dine in during lunch time. It is actual just a Japanese grocery but serve great and fresh Japanese sushi and sashimi. I had a grilled salmon don and so fresh and tasty like dining in Japan:)
Foodie_from_KL
Surprised at the rude staff and badly made sushi. Ordered the prawn and salmon set (#3) and there were 2 prawns to each sushi which was odd and awkward to eat as it kept falling apart. They give you lots of wasabi but charge you for soy sauce. We just came back from Japan and can confirm that isn’t how they eat sushi over there. Won’t be returning, wouldn’t recommend.
Always Hungry
Small place, small food, BIG on freshness!!!
If you are after some quick and fresh Sushi or Sashimi. This is D place.
I believe the seating could have been better, it was still ok as you can always take away and eat any where.
MissCat
A friend recommended us this place, this is our first time here. We ordered the Salmon Aburi, Avacado Maki, and Sashimi. The sushi is so fresh and we love it very much. This place is very far from where I live, but I don’t mind to come back for more 🍣 Apart from having sushi, there is also a Japanese shop that sell Japanese food, sake... and more.
Melbournefoodie
The cooked tuna sushi was borderline inedible. The tuna itself was dry, stale and unpleasant. I was unable to have more than one of the 10 cut pieces and threw the rest in the bin. Perhaps it was just what I ordered but regardless, I will not be returning.
Oodreiilittlepotato
Never had sashimi before until i came here. I thought i was going to hate it! Yet i love it until now~ their sashimi definitely made fresh! A bit pricey yet so worth it
Richard Fink
My favourite for Japanese takeaway! Having spent a lot of time in Asia eating very nice Japanese foods- especially in Japan and Korea - I was very happy to find Hinoki. Simply one of the tastiest Japanese around - and great value.
AlwaysHungryForMore
Our pick for the freshest and best sushi you can find in Melbourne! The grocery is also definitely worth a browse and jam packed full of imported goodies, it's a must if you're looking to cook some Japanese food.

Follow us on Instagram: @alwayshungryformore
Jeremy Rei Cole
The sushi platters made fresh to order, decent portion sizes of the fish here, which a lot of other places tend to cut corners on.
Plus a small Japanese grocery section on-site. Same concept as Suzuran in Camberwell, both really great though.
Kerli Kerli Kerli
Love this sushi store.. we bought one sushi mix large + sushi sashimi medium + one Japanese Sake to share among 4 of us.. Sushi takeaway in such a beautiful round trays really look presentable.. will come back again as we love fresh sushi & sashimi..
Dani Boudville
The platters are excellent and a good place to buy groceries and eat in. Small number of seats so be willing to wait but definitely worth it. Recommend the nigiri as it is made fresh and good quality. Casual dining
Jason Toh
Not really a restaurant but more of a japanese mini-mart. Fresh sushi made on the spot by the chef. Selection is not the greatest but still carries the most popular sushi. Price is reasonable too.
Mai T Tran
Been wanting to check this place out for a while but didn’t have a chance since we’re far away from the area, until today. Since we got back from Japan, i wanted to cook some Japanese dishes and planned to go there for the ingredients. The pantry itself is just a small one with limited products. But to have a store just sells japanese products, not all asian’s is good enough.
It is a take away sushi shop with just a few tables, but the quality of the food is restaurant grade. It was very close to what we had in japan. The fish is fresh, well prepared and came with just a right amount of rice, not a big lump of rice as u used to have in take away shops, which when u bite into, all u can taste is bland rice. Beautiful, must try, cheap sushi. Definitely come back for more.
The Food Book
First time having sushi here, we ate shared the platter and it was amazing. Presentation is always on point and enjoy the different options available, especially their aburi salmon, which isn't the best at other places. Also love that there's a grocery inside to explore some japanese ingredients. Definitely recommend
Mikki
Well, been here for years and simply perfect sushi everytime, and leave with a bag of japanese groceries. This is not a ‘restaurant’ so seatings are very limited.
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Those platters are so incredible looking and they taste just as good as they look! I made my husband drive us back from Mornington just so I could have my Hinoki fix
MissCatCat
Good place to look around the shop and buy some Japanese foods, however the sushi are under my expectations. If just for a healthy lunch, Hinoki is a good choice.
Jonathan Murphy
Understated store conveniently located in the heart of Fitzroy. Fresh sushi made to order at a reasonable price which is worth the wait. The store doubles up as an authentic Japanese grocery stocking everything from miso paste to sake. The Sakana Maki mix combined with a soy based octopus salad stole the spotlight. I will definitely be back to satisfy my sushi cravings in the future.
Keysey
Very fresh sushi, as it's made to order. It can take a while to get your order sometimes when they're busy. Dont stress though, just get busy with the banquet.
One.hungry.girl10
My favourite place to satisfy my sushi cravings! Fresh sushi made to order and while you wait there’s a Japanese grocery to buy more snacks !
FattyM
Went to try out hinoki after it being recommended and of its high rating. However, it was quite mediocre. I drove 35 mins here because of the reviews, surely it had to be amazing but it was quite unsatisfactory.
Alan Tse
A little expensive and very busy (hence the 4, not a 5). Beautiful packaging (in the true Japanese style, way over the top and most environmentally unfriendly) and the fish was really the best I had tasted anywhere outside of Japan. If you are prepared to pay a little for quality then definitely come here (if you can get there before they shut at 6!)
Valérie Vuu
Love love love this place. Best platters, fresh fish, authentic sushi and an added Japanese supermarket to bring some of hinoki home! Just a shame it’s so out of the way for me :(
Ziggy
Fresh and delicious, one of the best sushi places in Melbourne. They prepare and assemble the sushi in front of your very eyes and it's incredibly reflective when you eat it. You can choose from an array of mouth watering options. This place is good for just getting some nice sushi or if you want a big platter to share with lots of people. They are friendly and that adds to the many reasons why you should go to Hinoki.
Timeless Food
Lovin’ this place when Le bf recommended this place to have sushi 2 years ago. Until today, whenever we have some savings, we will come here for their fresh sushi because they are amazing! Fresh, made on the spot, friendly service, and variety of Japanese home-grocery products. Le bf and I always ordered the sharing platter that comes with variety of sushi. Price is high but you’re paying for the freshness and good quality ingredients. If you want a quick bite or lunch, this is the place as service is fast but bare in mind that they have limited seats.
Jayden
The Sushi is always made fresh and their range is delicious!
To top it off, they have a range of Japanese groceries too. Love visiting Hinoki! Worth the journey.
Jess
Tried out this place because a lot of people have been raving about it. To be honest there’s nothing special about this place except the fact that it’s a grocery and they serve food at the same time. We ordered the platter and the produce wasn’t fresh
Michelle Du
Ordered:
Medium sashimi 9/10
Kingfish Yuzu 8/10
Salmon aburi 10/10

It's not exactly a restaurant but a combination of a sushi bar + supermarket. Sashimi is fresh and service is pretty good.
Cindy Tran
My love for sushi and sashimi is undeniable, after Lune Croissanterie we stopped here to have lunch. This cozy, small sushi place is actually a little Japanese grocery store full of other high quality goodies. Definitely will stop here next time to get both their sushi and what they have in stock.

Salmon aioli: fresh delicious raw salmon toppled on top of a sushi roll filled with carrots then drizzled with Hinoki’s own aioli sauce. Don’t let the carrots set you off, the salmon is melt in your mouth delicious and the aioli sauce is a little more garlicky than what I’m use to which is a positive thing. 100% would recommend

Nosè maki mix: In love with the nosè makis they’re incredible, similar to the salmon aioli they are sushi rolls filled with carrots and topped with heavenly things. This one has a wide of variety of all of the maki rolls; torched salmon, eggplant, aioli salmon, king fish and tuna. All of these rolls were fantastic!

Service: Sushi did take a while to come, but service was super friendly and helpful!!

Living in Melbourne, I actually spot sushi places everywhere. From famous franchises to small stalls located right next to a train station... you don't have to worry if you crave for sushi and you will find none. But this doesn't mean that all sushis sold out there are delicious.

If you have a great love for sushi, HINOKI is one of the must-go eateries because the sushi you order will be made on-the-spot with fresh ingredients! I would recommend everything on the menu! Another bonus love for this place is that it sells jap stuff ranging from food&drinks to different items! Sugoi (^ω^)
Natasha
Best place on Smith St to grab a casual, healthy lunch that isn’t a $20 smashed arvo brunch. Has got ready to go options and build your own meal options. Awesome quality, freshly prepared, would highly recommend for all things Japanese.
Yumyumfoodyum
I wanted to love Hinoki but I just liked it. Aburi salmon was nice, a generous slice of fish but I like mine more charred. The kingfish yuzu and the scallop hollandaise were generous and beautifully presented but all I could taste was carrot. Tuna wasn’t as nicely presented as the other items.
LovesFood
I'm a repeat visitor to this authentic Japanese store. Their sushi cafe is great. I ordered the Shoji's platter which is a great mix of sushi sashimi salad. It's surprising for such an average size box that you get a full meal. Add beer or sake and it's a great lunch. Recommended and will come back!

Returned in May 2019 and ordered the platter again. Good food consistency and still great.
TLuv
The sushi is made to order therefore it was fresh and you could taste the quality of the ingredients used. I liked how it was also a small supermarket so while you wait for your sushi to be prepared, you could walk around and look at all the products they have to offer.
Snow
Really like this place. A take away sushi place with a small supermarket. Sushi was very fresh and authentic. Supermarket has a good variety of Japanese products.
Foodie
honestly the best sushi I have ever tasted. the price is so good as well! Id say the only downside to this place is that they dont have many seats! but when the food and price is this good, no one can complain!!!
KLLYXNG
I remember the first time I visited a few years ago and thought I'd try just a small portion of the nose maki and nigiri just to see what their sushi was like. Honestly so delicious and fresh as it is all made to order in store. Definitely authentically Japanese, and everyone always has a smile on their face in store. Nowadays when I drop buy I either get a medium/ large sushi or sashimi mix depending on my mood. Never fails and always tastes so amazing!!

The best fast food sushi you can find in Melbourne.
Very fresh and good quality sushi and sashimi for very reasonably prices and you can shop for Japanese groceries while you wait for your sushi to be made.
The only downside would be trying to find parking on a busy day.

Hinoki make these beautiful sushi/sashimi platters that are great to bring along to a pot luck for a fresh feel. Platters are prepared fresh and can be whipped up within 15 minutes if ordered on the day. Good sized nigiri's, heaps of wasabi and soy added separately as well.
Service is always amazing.

Had the ‘nigiri salmon and tuna’ pack which had four salmon and four tuna sushi and the ‘aburi salmon’ pack had six seared salmon sushi with creamy sesame sauce and some scallions on top.

The nigiri sushi here are larger than average and you are getting a lot more fish; the rice is completely covered by two thirds of the fish while the remaining one third is just sticking out. For the ‘nigiri salmon and tuna’ pack the rice was a bit dry and wasn’t seasoned enough with the sweet vinegar; fish didn’t stick quite well to the rice. The salmon and tuna were also quite lean so the overall flavour was toned down. The wasabi had a kick to it though and with a little dab of soy sauce it was still enjoyable. The ‘aburi salmon’ was another story; the salmon was already tastier when seared but it was greatly enhanced by the sesame sauce. They were delicious; savoury and fragrant, soft and creamy; totally compensated for the lack of flavour and moisture in the rice.

Overall a satisfying meal; wasn’t perfect but still tasty and great value for the size of the nigiri and the amount of fish you get. Since this sushi place is located within a Japanese grocery store, I also ended up getting a refrigerated bottle of green tea and one of the green tea ice cream snacks; so convenient and a bonus for a green tea lover like me.

Really fresh and delicious. Staff are helpful, friendly and approachable. Great place for some fresh sushi at a really good price point. 👍🏻👌🏻
Sweet And Sour Fork
The house special of nosé maki tasted as good as it looked. The traditional maki roll was filled with pickled carrots, then topped with diced salmon sashimi and a dollop of Kewpie mayonnaise. The luscious creaminess of the fish contrasted well with the tangy crunch of the carrots; I’m keen to make my way back and try some of the other nosé maki creations on offer.

I get my pickles, natto, miso, nori, wasabi and sushi from this excellent Japanese grocer. You can sit and eat in the shop or takeaway. Love this place!
Andrea
AMAZING SUSHI! Loved my experience and the shop is so cute. Sushi was on point and actually quite affordable, I could tell everything was prepared fresh and the workers were very nice.

Service: Great service, Japanese workers who were all very nice. I could tell this place is more authentic than most Japanese resturants or food outlets which is great.

Ambience: The place is a small supermarket, the highlight really is on the sushi.Lots of natural light and seats face the window so you don't feel trapped in.

Food: The sushi is great, no cutting corners. We got three dishes including two plates of mixed nigiri and one roll which she plated in one box. The salmon I could taste straight away was fresh and the balance between rice and fish was good.

Wasabi was alreasy placed under the fish which I really appreciate. The range of the menu is quite big and actually quite affordable if you compare with other outlets. For example, Sushi Sushi does nigiri which is similar pricing and portions. The quality at Hinoki is ten fold.

Overall, great small shop that highlights great fresh sushi at an affordable price. Love the authenticity of Hinoki and would come back for sure. Might even like this place more than Hotaru :O

Hinoki is such a cute little place. Picked up a platter and some sashimi to go. Fish was fresh and the rice was delicious. Great presentation and friendly staff.

You cannot go wrong with this place! The sushi and sashimi are always fresh! Most things are made to order and delicious. It reminds me of the convenience stores in Tokyo!

Japanese mart, tick. Amazing sushi, tick. Authenticity, tick.
Fresh sushi made in house while you hoard on your favourite Japanese cooking supply, what's not to like?
Had the medium sushi mix and it was definitely enough for 2 people.
Every time I eat here, reminds me of eating in a shop in the outskirts of Tokyo.
It is a bit pricier than your average sushi take away but you're paying for quality, and it's cheaper than a flight to Japan!
Demi
Been dying to try the sushi here and finally got to it. I ordered the large sashimi deluxe platter and it was AMAZING. Fresh and delicious. I can’t wait to come back and get more.
Hangry Horace
Sushi was fresh and delicious. Price may be a little high but you get what you pay for. There are very few dine in seats so, it may be a better choice to take away.
Alice
Highly recommended! The sushi & sashimi are fresh, inexpensive and most importantly special & delicate. The whole store feels authentically Japanese.
Foodtaku
Absolutly amazing sushi and sashimi. Some of the best i have had outside japan. I come here often from the other side of town which should say something
Michelle Licuanan
Absolutely delicious - possibly the best and affordable sushi I've had in Melbourne! The Aburi Salmon, Sashimi and Nosé Maki are a must try!
Willtravelforfood17
I really like the sushi here which is fresh and delicious. I also like that they sell offcuts of fish such as samon belly which I can buy and fry or use for soup. The sushi is good quality so is slightly more expensive than other sushi takeaways.
Melbrunchin
Love this set up, sushi made fresh to order inside a small Japanese grocery. Not much of an option to dine in but nevertheless amazing selection of food and wonderful friendly service.
Must Be Hungry
Funky, authentic and affordable Sushi 🍣. It's like a Japanese mart with a sushi kitchen built in. We were recommended this place by a friend and they didn't disappoint, for the price and food this is a 5/5. It's not a 5 star restaurant, just awesome sushi. You might struggle to find a seat like us, but for the most part it's take away.

MustBeHungry approved! Check out the photos 😋
Celia
After buying some snacks in store, I wanted to try the sushi here for the first time. The sushi here is soo goood, the Japanese staff makes them after you order your pack so it's fresh. The texture of the fish was also a sign of freshness. I also approve of their rice, a tad of vinegar taste to it. I ordered the Nose Maki and Hoso Maki (#57 - $11) and a cold matcha milkshake ($2.8). Their prices are decent. The matcha milkshake was very milky. As I had a few bags and snacks in my hands, a kind staff lady helped me carry my sushi pack to the counter! I ate inside the place and it was quite relaxing. I would come back more regularly for more snacks and sushi if only I lived closer!

On a lovely, warm Friday afternoon I had this (see picture) delicious non-veg Sushi platter. To be honest, I love Sushi as much as I love life. I didn't really spend a lot of time here, yet my solo dining experience was quite a pleasant one. As I went hunting for a place to have a quick brunch, in between some work yesterday, I was enticed by this place; seeing some 'jolly' diners through the glass from the other side the road, I had an urge to give it a go. And I wasn't disappointed a bit! The beautifully spread platters made my decision a no-brainer. Awesome flavours!

The staff were quite welcoming and polite. I don't wanna make this a characteristically long review; would rather like the picture do some talking on my behalf. If you love Japanese food, especially Sushi, I would highly recommend this place.

Thanks guys @HJP. You folks truly made my day! I would surely visit you again. Keep it up.

Cheers,
Partha

The sushi was made fresh and I enjoyed the nigiri vegetarian pack which had some different combinations and some of the best mushrooms I have had. I love how they made the sushi fresh and service was prompt. The Japanese supermarket also had a great range. I'll certainly be back for more!

Fresh, tasty, true sushi at a great price

My favourite cuisine in the world is hands down Japanese, I love all of it, could eat it all day, everyday. Ergo, one of the things top of my priorities when I move into a new place is, WHERE IS THE CLOSEST SUSHI PLACE. Luckily I have been blessed with Hinoki Japanese Pantry 10 mins down the road (5 if I’m super hungry…)
World Eats Food
The nigiri, sushi and sashimi here tastes amazingly fresh!! My new favourite Japanese go to! They use fresh grainy wasabi and premium soy sauce. We got a mixed platter which was plenty for 2 people and had an assortment to try from. I also tried the matcha milkshake for $2.80 which was delicious! Not many seats if you want to eat in, but definitely worth a visit! Be sure to check out their specials board! You can even buy some Japanese goodies at the store!
Kristie Koo
Found the sushi here better than it's sister restaurant, Suzuran. The lighting and ambience is a lot more modern and brighter as well. The sushi was really fresh and delicious, probably the nicest takeaway sushi place in Melbourne. Nice for a quick Japanese craving, though not really cheap as well. Worth it for the quality though. Service was alright, quite efficient and polite. They prepared it pretty fast as well. I will be back!

Been wanting to go here for agesssss! The photos look so nice. I love how they make it fresh!!! Worth the wait. I really liked the salmon nigiri and the tuna sashimi! I defs would reccomend (for two) the medium sashimi/sushi platter and add in a choice of sushi. My mom has never had sushi before so I left her some and she really enjoyed it. Only let down is that the salmon sashimi was slightly too thick and that the salmon sushi had too much carrot inside
Paulina
Always come back here time after time. The food is amazing!! The staff are friendly! I always get the huge packs as I think they are better value for money and I am never disappointed. Also cool to browse around the shop while waiting for my food to be prepared. Fav jap place by far!
MM
Love this place so so much! Been here every week for their sushi! Especially love the salmon and prawn nigiri ❤ Wish there is more seats as it can be quite packed.
Lyn Murphy
Yum sushi. Nice and fresh. Squishy if you wanna eat there, as there's only small amounts of table space, but definitely worth the wait. Soy matcha latte is really refreshing too. Uniquely flavoured sushi with Yuzu pepper tasted uplifting. Also good spot to grab some groceries whilst you are there.
Marie
Love this place! Great, fresh sushi and sashimi. Reliable and reasonably priced, great service. Authentically Japanese. Regularly visit and am never disappointed!
Flora
I ordered over the phone for sushi sashimi medium and went to pick it up. Over the phone the lady asked me to repeat the order several times as well as my name so I did. I got to the shop to pick up the order and approached one of the chef, said my name and the order, lid was closed but he acknowledged and gave me the order. Got home realised the order was incorrect so I phoned the shop.
THE EXPERIENCE WAS COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL AND DISHONEST. The chef kept insinuating that I indeed placed the incorrect order (sashimi medium) and caused a scene in the shop WHEN I OFFERED TO PAY THE DIFFERENCE. All I want to do is pick up the right order as I promised the kids that they will get sushi. I explained it is the first time I have ordered something from them and if you look at the menu on Zomato you can not actually see sashimi comes in medium size clearly as it says in big writing SASHIMI PLATTER LARGE underneath. I placed the order for 2 adults and 2 toddler and came home to 2 hungry toddler with no sushi. He just kept going at it and caused such a scene in the store and said quote" it can't be that both the lady and him heard it wrong so I must be wrong " and that "I don't have to come back". ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND IT IS BEYONG INSULTING AND OFFENSIVE
Foodie Guy
A small sushi/grocery shop combined located in Fitzroy.

The place looks ordinary and nothing fancy but don't let that fool you the Sushi/sashimi was probably one of the best I have tried.
The sashimi ordered was cut and tasted fresh it had no fishy after taste you would normally get from other sushi shops.
The quality is on par with Nobu's sashimi at a fraction of the cost. The wasabi was also fresh made unlike the chemically tasting wasabi you get from the packets.

Customer service is excellent, will definitely come back here again for a sushi/sashimi fix.
This Sushi take away supermarket situated opposite of 7eleven, quite noticeable driving from Otter St. I've never heard this shop among my friends and surprised to see the Zamato score is so high also excited to find out the qualiy of sushi made by Japanese staff and price of store products. The colorful decorations with combinaion of noisy ingredients in Maki is very unique and modern style. However, those Maki taste does not go well at all. Cutomer service is very much focused on locals, definitely not for Hokkaido gourmet. We orderd #46 Nose maki mix which had nice Aburi salmon with mayo & tobikko eggs, regular rare salmon, tasteless rare tuna & king fish mince, teriyaki marnated Maki tasted like Gulab Jamun (Indian sweets). Maki Under those ingredients are rolled with vinegar carrot slices and rice. Altough Tamago maki was made to order, the cheap seaweed was chewy and wet. The same to other pre-made #46 that they don't bother roasting seaweed papers prior to roll. We forced to eat them not enjoyable way. Good window shopping📷

We are so lucky here to have an amazing selection of fine cuisines. One of the best sushis I have had (that are also affordable) is from Hinoki. We came by here to buy some for my best friend, who had just given birth and hadn't eaten sushi for 9 months.

We bought her the bento, which came in a nice paper box so was good for gifting (didn't take a picture).

We got a medium sushi platter for ourselves and it was wonderful. So fresh and so tasty. I was absolutely thrilled with the attention to detail and would be back again and again.
Suburb Review
Pretty good for sushi takeaway or express dine in. Fresh sashimi and delicious sushi... loved the seared salmon one!
Located in hipster land- Fitzroy/Collingwood, perfect for people watching if you sit in front of the window. It's also a great japanese grocery store with everything you need.
Only issue is THEY NEED MORE SEATING.. some people missed out on seating & would be great if they served alcohol too.. good to check out once... or twice :)
Ling Yap
Great sashimi and sushi located at Collingwood area. Take the tram 86 from Swanston St to come to this little gem. It sells all Jap products and freshly made sushi. We ordered a med size sushi sashimi set for two to share. Costs A$40 and large portions. The green tea milk shake was average of taste costing $2.80 each.
SushiSushi
I really like the concept of a place to eat and shop and it's becoming more common in Melbourne. Quality sushi and made fresh. The grocery store has some great stuff.
Soleil
When you visit here be ready to compete for the small window seating area, spots go like hot cakes. They do pack all orders in takeaway packaging which I assume is to avoid people sticking around, otherwise it's just a terrible unnecessary overuse of single use plastics for those eating in.
The nosé maki sushi I found more flavourful than the others we tried. I liked that it was either seafood or vegetarian, no meat here which was refreshing compared to other outlets. It was calm despite how busy they were, overall it was an enjoyable experience.
MF
So basically its a japanese supermarket with take away sushi based on order, and they have very limited seating (we sat infront of the cash register, dont get me wrong, it was fun!) so not only we can eat the sushi that we bought but also the drinks, snacks and ice cream that we bought from the supermarket basically. Mind u, this is not really a restaurant, and they only sell sushi, nothing else (no appetizer, ramen, soba, bento, etc). Their sushi was good but not awesome, we ordered the smoked salmon, unagi mix and vegetarian, all okay.
Robert Guo
Literally the best sushi you can get that is affordable. Really great environment on the inside as well. Highly recommended :)

Try also the soy green tea milkshake it is extra nice
Chardos
Probably the best sushi I've had. Salmon was incredibly fresh, I will return for sashimi next time.

The fusion of flavours was good too, aioli was working nicely with the salmon sashimi.
Melbourneats
Not a sashimi lover here but my partner is, go here if you love sashimi! I also love how they have a mini Japanese supermarket inside that you can purchase to make your own Japanese dishes.
Take your sushi lover friends.
Giselle Levens
Best takeaway sushi in Melbourne, hands down. So fresh and delicious, they make it to order. Their sashimi cutting skills are next level. Amazing!

This sushi place/grocery will satisfy your sushi craving. Order a little set (everything was good but the seared salmon was definitely the highlight for me) and I added the eel (my go to- and I'm in love). This shop have good selection of sushi sets so I will definitely be back.
Big Belly Full
Hinoki Japanese Pantry is both a shop and a sushi restaurant. To guaranteed freshness, the sushi here is made to order. The food was terrific, and of excellent value and quality. Staff are wonderful and the service was quick. There are Japanese savoury and sweet snacks in the shop. I spied a range of Japanese ice cream near the back of the store. This place is not suitable for large groups as seating is limited, it’s more of a takeaway place. I’m definitely going to come here again. Highly recommended.
North Fitzroy Food Addict
Such a cute concept. Been wanting to go here for a while and I'm so glad I finally found the time to. Everything is made fresh on the spot and its tastes amazing. Hinoki has a great selection to choose from with combinations that I have never come across before. While you are waiting for your takeaway you can browse around their mini supermarket, which is filled with a selection of Japanese produce.
Staff are friendly and make it a pleasure to go there. Will be back no doubt.
Thank you for a great experience.

Cool fushion of a grocery store and a sushi place. Here we ordered a huge dish of various sliced sushi rolls. The ingredients are definitelyvery fresh and prepared fresh with care and attention to details. All of them were pretty good, we could definitely taste the freshness in the veggies and fish, the price was fair as well. However, we found the taste to be just above average, we would prefer stronger flavour. We also ordered the matcha milkshake, it was good, not too sweet, but slightly bland and thin.

The place also sells Japanese groceries, but nothing too special though.
Peony
Always providing fresh and delicious sushi.
The staff are friendly and helpful, and they also have a goos range of japanese grocery items.
Definitely will recommend for anyone wanting quality sushi.

My new favourite sushi! Went here with a friend for lunch, our orders were made fresh to order and we were both blown away by how good the sushi was. Great value for money too for such fresh quality ingredients. Also, salmon and aioli is a match made in heaven!
R.M INC
One of the best sushi places around, fresh quality ingredients, friendly staff and the prices are very good. As a bonus you can shop for all your favorite Japanese ingredients as well. We had the Aburi Mix, Nigiri & Hoso Maki as well as the Nose Maki & Hoso Maki
FoodN
Fantastic fresh sushi. Made to order. Great for lunch or a platter when entertaining friends. Once you come here there is no turning back- I'll never have another hand roll again!

One of the top sushi places in Melbourne is over at Hinoki pantry in Collingwood and after being myself, I can definitely agree. From the front it’s rather unassuming with most of the store being the grocery section. It’s actually a great setup as the sushi is made to order so you can enjoy browsing while your sushi is freshly rolled.
Valina Whites
great sushi and sashimi, wonderful selection that is very authentic, very polite and smiley service. anything there screams quality and taste. Arigatou gozaimasu!
David Liao
Part Japanese grocery party sushi eat in. This is like suzuran in Camberwell but you have option too dine in. Although limited to 8 seats it was a good send on a windy hay fever day in Melbourne. The sashimi was fresh, but sushi rice was just average.
Sherena Ng
Came here at 11am when the doors opened to avoid the queue and get seats for a good lunch, and we was not disappointed. There was an unintentional mix up in our order, and the staff was completely professional in dealing with it. They even gave us a free Toppo snack for the trouble! We had the large platter with a side of mixed maki and everything was AMAZING. Sashimi was incredibly fresh and well prepared, and the rice to sashimi ratio was perfect. Every bite was flavourful and we could not stop despite our tummies getting filled to the brim. When we thought we tasted the best sushi so far, the next one gets even better. It was an absolutely mind blowing experience and the BEST sushi place I've been to in Melbourne! Reasonable price as well. I'm definitely coming back.

The sushi are super kawaii and delicious!!
Abit exxy for a plate and might not be enough to fill your stomach but i guess you're paying for the quality... will definitely come back again :)

I ran about 3km from city to Hinoki just because the review I saw on zamato and it didn't disappoint me!At the first Glance I entered in,this spacious and bright place provided me with comfortable feeling that I really enjoyed.Besides, there are so many kinds of sushi for me to select so it did take me some minutes to decide. After I ordered, they would make it promptly but it still took me about 10 minutes to wait.😑BTW,actually I wouldn't feel boring during the waiting time because I could look around various Japanese foods here and there ,which is close to the operating counter . Salmon is very fresh and rice is clear and appropriately maked and Prices are also reasonable . Will come back again!!!
Judy
Best sushi place I've been to in Melbourne so far! Quality of fish is fantastic, there's no aftertaste like other places I've been too. Very affordable price and although there is limited seating, it's okay to wait a bit or take away to eat elsewhere! I love the idea of extra topping on the maki rolls, as there is more fish and less rice, overall would definitely come back to try something else !!! Absolutely divine Japanese sushi.
Catlady
Great sushi and all the ingredients are very fresh. I'm very impressed by the sushi has wasabi inside which it is doing in a pretty traditional way. The only reason that I don't rate it a 5 is I hope they will have udon or ramen soon to improve the quality and happy eating atmosphere.
FoodforThought
Read about Hinoki through the Postcards show and I was itching to discover this jap food store with a built in sushi bar. Oh my their sushi menu is bloody extensive. I literally stood there for a good 5-10mins deciding what to have. The sushi is made fresh to order and I particularly loved the fattiness of the salmon. The store serves a wide range of Japanese food products and I'll sure be coming here often to restock my pantry.
Prayingmantis88
It was the aesthetically pleasing maki that first drew me to Hinoki. In the photographs, it appears as though the maki are overflowing with fish and perhaps it was unrealistic of me to assume this is the case. However, as I bit down, I was extremely disappointed to find the center filled with raw carrots. The aioli paired with the salmon is absolutely delightful. But when compared to other sushi stores, there is considerably less fish in the maki at Hinoki's. That being said, staff were polite and efficient.
We.eat.travel.love
After seeing good ratings for this place we made a visit here. Firstly the concept is quite good if having the supermarket and restaurant counter in one space. They have a huge variety of sushi and we ordered 60 and 63. There was a good rush and we had to wait for 15 mins whoch was told to us while ordering. The staff was polite and welcoming. We did a takeway as theplace does not have much seating. To our great satisfaction our food was just superb. I really liked the inari since I had not tasted it before. The sushi was also freshly done and was very good in taste. I will definitely go back here again.
Yimp
One of the more decent and reliable sushi takeaway places in Melbourne, and priced reasonably.

The salmon pieces here are probably one of the better ones (like Suzuran), and they get the neta (fish) proportion to shari (rice) right: good nigiri sushi should have its neta "overlapping" the shari.

They do aburi (flame torched) sushi as well, although this could be done on higher heat (to give that nice torched taste). The matcha milk shake was decent.
Gabby Webb
First of all, I really like the concept of this place. It's a Japanese supermarket/sushi restaurant. Where you can get freshly made sushi rolls and buy Japanese products in one go. How awesome is that! I love the Salmon Aioli rolls, but mostly the sushi here are all good.
Frog
Great fresh sushi and excellent variety. Very limited and casual seating which could be improved to make this a 5/5. A license would be nice to be able to get a drink with my meal.
Jean
Sashimi tasted slightly fresher than the average. The portions aren't at all filling. Wouldn't come back here with the many other Japanese restaurants all around VIC.
Theycallmemaggie
Across my handful of visits to Hinoki Japanese Pantry, the sushi and sashimi has been sensationally fresh and tasty. The larger platters are perfect to share between two to three people. I’ve tried both the mixed sushi+sashimi and sashimi-only platters and recommend the mixed version for the variety.
Kell
I love Hinoki's simple menu of fresh, made-to-order sushi and the fact that they sell slabs and slabs of sashimi in the pantry. Prices are reasonable, and you can't go wrong. Location and hours are convenient, I will continue to return again and again.
Will Cole
5/5! Need I say more? If I could describe Hinoki in one word: FRESH
Kate Grange
This place is consistently good. Eclectic collection of Japanese food and beverages. Their sashimi is particularly tasty and fresh. Thank you
Andreas
This sushi was faultless and so delicious. I had the seared salmon with toasted sesame sauce and it had a slight charred flavour and lovely nuttiness from the sesame sauce. Divine. There was a long wait but now I know I can call ahead.
.xLngo
Hinoki gives you a great selection of delicious high quality sushi traditional and new.

The sushi restaurant is attached to a japanese grocery / pantry shop similar to suzuran. It does offer a small area for seating, but its not made for groups.

The scallop hollandaise maki is one of my favourites
Matthew Tan
A friend and I ordered the Large Sushi/Sashimi platter for lunch and left full and contented.

Generous portion size comparatively to usual Japanese cuisine, Sashimi and Sushi prepared fresh and efficiently and excellent presentation. If you want tap water you will need to ask to get it filled directly from their sink though.

There is also a little pantry in the back you can purchase authentic Japanese groceries and snacks from. My mate grabbed a Matcha Ice cream Sandwich which was delicious and at $3, well worth it.

I finished my meal with their soy matcha shake. Was good but nothing to scream about and at $3.80 a pop, I suggest you make your own with a good Matcha powder, full fat soy milk and vanilla ice cream.

I would not get the beverage on my return but I will definitely go back for the delicious sashimi and the Nigiri!
Kesh.d
Best sushi I've tasted in long long time!!! So fresh and great flavors. They should defo add soft shell to the menu though enough though it's not so traditional.
Nora_wx
Fresh and delicious sushi, I like the different sauces they use on different sushi, very unique.
Also bought Kewpie Mayonnaise from their store. I like to add some Mayonnaise on the California Roll, tasted awesome!!!
Friendly staff, clean place. Will go back to try their other dishes.
Milla Vanilla
Delicious, generous and beautifully crafted sushi in the heart of Smith St. The little soy sauce sachets surprisingly provided plenty! All made to order so does take a while but it's worth it. Seating is limited so takeaway may be a better option!
Rachel Zhou
I would definitely come back and buy sashimi! Love this cozy and bright pantry. I would never believe that I found this great place for sushi and sashimi within a Japanese grocery store!
Eric T
I am of the opinion that sushi shops that focus on takeaways don't normally serve great sushi. Hinoki dispelled that notion. Absolutely loved every bit of the large sushi & sashimi platter that we had, which was made to order (had to wait slightly less than 10 minutes for it).
Juve FoodNation
I love Hinoki Japanese Pantry, great varieties of fresh authentic sushi, sashimi. Prices are reasonable for the great quality. Can also shop for your favourite Japanese groceries. Staff are very friendly and it get quite busy in the afternoon. One of the best sashimi I have had in Melbourne.
Mich.f
Love this place. The maki mix is made fresh and the spring onion inside provides a healthy surprise of flavour and is quite filling. Highly recommend.
Kemal Ajay
Sashimi is excellent. Takes a few minutes to prepare but worth the wait! Delicate flavours, good sized portion provided with a full-strength wasabi.
Sasha19
This place is more like a grocery store than a restaurant and is probably more suited for takeaway. Seating is limited but it was not hard to get a place while I dined in. Can't say enough about the freshness of the sushi. Absolutely delicious.
Melbourne Culinary
Hinoki is a lovely Japanese grocery store in the middle of Fitzroy that also serves a variety of fresh sushi from their sushi bar. With a spacious and clean interior while selling a variety of Japanese groceries as well as their sushi bar serving fresh and innovative sushi, Hinoki is definitely a gem that I was lucky to stumble upon.
MSY123
One of the most authentic Japanese Sushi places I've found in Melbourne as of yet.
With a large range of Sushi, Sashimi and even Sake! Furthermore, there's a grocery section if you fancy certain Japanese products, like Plum Wine, Matcha or my favourite Ujinotsuyu Aoyanagi Green Tea.
Most of the time, the chefs will make your order on the spot, which is a good window to peek around.
With only a few seats in the corner, it's expected of you to take-away.
The best Sushi store in this area, easy.
Andrew Kelly
Super fresh sushi. Hinoki love what they do and what they do, sushi, they do well. This is more of a Japanese grocery store with a small sushi bar to the side with very limited seating. I enjoy walking through the store looking at what Japanese products I can buy to make something at home. I then would order a very large Sushi and Sashimi platter to eat in store. It's a little awkward and strange to eat sushi off a plastic platter and they are not really equipped to offer a good eat in dining experience but the quality is good. They are geared more to take away and catering orders.
J0yy173
After savoring sushi this good it's hard to go back to the ordinary. I believe this is run by the same people as Suzuran in Camberwell, which means great quality, fresh sushi at really reasonable prices. The Nose Maki Mix offers variety of tastes and texture; just yum!
Kat_Eats_Mel
By far the BEST SUSHI IN TOWN!! I live so far I rarely get to go to this side of town so I don't get to eat at this sushi place often. The sushi is made to order and while they are making your order you can browse around in the grocery section. Very cool!
David Food Leasing
DO: Anything. We got the platters. The grilled items and sushi/sashimi combo didn't disappoint.

DON'T: Just order takeout like we did. A lot of the hot dishes looked delicious whilst we were waiting.

TIP: Three platters was definitely more than enough to cater for 6 hungry people at lunch.
DumplingDoll
I've been meaning to check this place out for ages, but never had the time. I think I'll start making more time, I mean, what's not to love, proper Japanese sushi served in a Japanese store. The fish is fresh and tasty! Service is quick and friendly. I would definitely come back!
Mel
Love this little place - fresh sashimi and sushi made while you shop for authentic Japanese groceries. I always have to make a stop if I'm in the area for my hit of beautifully fresh sashimi!!

There hasnt been any badly made sushi during the many times we have come here.

Unlike some places that give you lots of rice and thin slivers of fish, hinoki gives you generous toppings with just enough rice.

Great thing is the decent prices. I think you get more value than you pay for.

During busy times, there will be a bit of a wait but we would just kill time by visiting the grocery section.

This place is expletive inducing and superlatively good. The sushi here makes you understand why an entire culture eats it. The price is very fair and last time I was here they had uni! So fresh and creamy - like a foie gras of the sea and actually better than that that I've had in Japan. If only I lived closer!
Chips&Sauce
Melbourne doesn't lack any places where you can find sushi. If you want some of the better sushi I suggest Hinoki. It's hard to pin point why the sushi is so good but the ingredients are better quality and seem much fresher than other sushi.
Cookielessvee
one of the best authentic sushi places I've been to. Sushi made to order and sashi is fresh and odourless. The sashimi melts in your mouth, the skin isn't tough and the sushi rolls are compact and fresh as there is no discolouration to the avocado. There is a queue but its worth the wait. cant wait to try more. Great service and very friendly staff.
Fatcat
You don't often see salmon aburi on menus, so when I saw it at Hinoki I ordered it pronto (along with the spicy tuna maki). It was around a 20min wait for food (we went on a Saturday arvo 'round 3), and it was delicious. The salmon was so soft and the tuna just melted in my mouth. 🍣😋

Been here twice now. First time I came here I ordered quite a bit of sushi/sashimi and found it to be amazing!!! So I ordered some more for my family.

In the mean time I found another great sushi place closer to home called Murasaki in Wantirna and that place blew me away including their fresh grated wasabi. Been there three times in one week.

Came back here today as I remembered the sushi to be fantastic and again ordered a whole heap. Got home and had the sushi/sashimi and no longer found its taste to be fantastic.

All I can put it down to is that the sushi/sashimi at Murasaki was far more superior hence I didn't enjoy this place anymore. That or the sushi chef was having a mediocre day. He wasn't too friendly either.
Phil Chan
Nice sushi and true blue jap sushi chef. Limited seatings but you won't expect too much from the ambiance given it is a grocery shop in nature
JO
Best Shushi 👍👍👍 . I don't mind going there every week . Everything is fresh and consistent every time we go there. Good service & friendly people
Tania
Place is really unique, with its own mini Japanese grocery store. Sushi and sashimi was fresh. Would definitely be back to try other menu items. There are not many places to sit for a bit either. Staff were friendly however our order was somehow lost and the staff asked us to pay twice.
After finding out Hinoki currently had Uni (Sea Urchin) we set out to go get some. Ordered the Large Platter which was $52 plus the only remaining piece of Uni, to share between two.
Walking in you are met with a few benches for seating at the front of the store and a large kitchen for the sushi chefs and a counter where you pay for your purchases. At the back of the store is a small grocery with Japanese goods. Ordering from the sushi chefs, they'll create your platter fresh and call you out when they're done and then you take it to purchase at the counter and can either eat in or take away.

The sashimi was fresh and laid out appealingly and the large platter was a perfect portion for two! There were many interesting menu choices thay we'll definitely be returning for!
MF
Perfect place to buy sushi and sashimi platters for takeaway!!! Tried a few times and the quality was quite good. Service is always friendly and efficient here. There are also a great selections of side dishes, drinks, japanese beers and sakes. Prices are all reasonable. Since the location is quite convenient, it is great to buy takeaways for a picnic👍. For dining in I would suggest the chirashi don which is only $16.
Ange
Have had salmon and tuna sashimi. Both well made, rice at a nice temperature instead of being cold like at most places, and well seasoned, not overly soggy and sweet. Didn't find salmon and tuna that fresh, fresher than say you average sushi place but still missing the mark. Also, when you order, indicate if you don't want wasabi in your sushi as I got it underneath my tuna pieces in my sashimi which was an unpleasant surprise. Maccha iced latte quite tasty and reasonably priced.
Stephen Raphael
Fantastic, clean, helpful and covers an awesome range. Just wish the sweets side was better represented and there was a few more fresh and frozen lines. Suzuran in camberwell has a far better range but this is closer to home for me and the eating options are far better too.
Brillat_Savarin
Never eat sushi in Melbourne, except Hinoki & Suzuran in Camberwell. This place serves super fresh sushi and Californian rolls. You may have to wait a while but the food is made with skill, and lots of passion. Seriously good.
JME
Nothing I can say that hasn't been said before. Closest thing to Japanese quality sushi that I have had in Melbourne. I would recommend bypassing the California Rolls and dive right into the Nigiri and Inari Sushi.

The wait is slightly longer because they do prepare it on the spot, not kept chilled like your everyday sushi booth. Price isn't bad at all for the quality. Definitely get the Unagi!
Mr MM Smith
fantastic sushi, Nigiri and other Japanese delicacy. The place is not run by Chinese which means you're getting the real deal, fresh and prepared correctly. Love the lay out but be warned they don't have a lot room to dine in.
Julycheee
While the selection of seafood for the sushi and sashimi here is standard for Melbourne, there is a huge range of combinations for bento and platters. Some of them sitting there ready, and others they will make for us on the spot. Sushi and sashimi is good quality, fair priced and delicious. Our boxes accidentally got tossed around a bit as we took them elsewhere to eat but they were still great for takeaway and well enjoyed later on (sorry the pictures do not do them justice). Highly recommended sushi and sashimi place.

I went here for the sushi because I love sushi very much and of course I will not miss a such high rated sushi place! I got the California roll set which was just the average level but I have to admit that the portion is big

WHAT? A Minimart cum Sushi Bar?

Not just at Woolworths Supermarkets ....

Found this place by accident, not too sure what it is at first sight, but let's find out.
So glad we did, plenty of Japanese goodies on those Minimart aisles and onsite freshly made and super cheap Sushi.

A true testament to Japanese culinary, they can make good food anywhere.

You can enjoy those Sushi there or Take Away, plenty of Can or Bottle drinks.

We love their greetings as you enter and exit, polite, appreciative and vibrant, just a joy to be here albeit the simplicity.

It is clean and organised as any Japanese establishment do, being more of a Take Away Sushi Bar, don't expect a toilet.

GO and ENJOY .... many times over.
Robin Sparkles
So envious of those who live close to Hinoki. The quality and taste of the sushi is a distance worth traveling for. Service is friendly too!
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
This place is awesome!! It has the best variety takeaway authentic sushi options. I was so impressed they had natto rolls which I have never had here in Melbourne since my Japan visits - an acquired taste not appreciated by most so I am so impressed they have it on the menu. I cannot fault this place, always so fresh and delicious, that I can't resist stopping by every time I go through Collingwood. I'm told they are possibly the same group as Suzuran but I do prefer coming here more for the variety in the menu. Love!
One Piggy & A Bear
Hinoki has been our go-to for take away sushi since its day one. Although it is for take away, most of items on menu are only prepared to order. Hinoki offers a variety of sushi that you'll find quite different from other shops. They are more delicate and of course very delicious. Sashimi here is very fresh too. Our favourite ones are number 46 in which you'll get 2 of each type. For the price, I think Hinoki is well worth it.

Hinoki also offers a range of Japanese products (ie. Japanese ingredients, snacks & cooking tools). Loving to cook Japanese food at home and having been to many Asian shops, I do find their products fairly cheaper compared with others. Although it doesn't look very big, but trust me they have everything you'll need for a basic Japanese pantry.
Hungry Panda
I don't often get sushi and sashimi as takeaway to eat at home or picnic. Simply because I think it should be eaten fresh and not have the risk of warm sashimi.

But I heard great reviews of this place, and the weekend weather was perfect for a picnic nearby.

We had the large sashimi platter with a few other mixed boxes too. Everything was very fresh and high quality cuts of seafood.

Not exactly cheap, but for this price, would love to have the option of dining in to enjoy the quality food.
Gotham
I love the grocery store, and the fish is of high quality, but I'm not a huge fan of the way they do their rice, or the raw onion mix they use in some of their rolls.
POC
Absolutely marvelous. Although situated in a hipster popular zone to which such phenomenal sashimi would not appreciated, Hinoki delivers a cuisine rivaling that of the city's best.
Dcee
absolutely lovin this...a supermarket and a sushi bar all in one. how great is that. sushi is great, will always highly recommend the nigiri sushi. quick meals, get in get out and also your grocery done while waiting for your sushi.
Florence Renata
Everything is fresh and delicious! Aburi salmon is a must try. For dessert, you can go to the back of the shop and get some mochi ice cream. Definitely gonna come back again for some real sushi.

24/2 went here several times again. Today I went to get some typical Japanese candy for an event. Again I was helped by a lovely staff member, and she did a great job!
Went here today to do some shopping for a Japanese recipe. I couldn't find anything, but with some help from a lovely staff member, I found everything! I would've rated higher if it wasn't for the fact that when we bought some sushi here at another occasion, we had to pay extra for some more soy sauce, which I find ridiculous.
John Smith
Hinoki is my all-time favorite Japanese. Their sushi is consistently good and fresh. I get the Chirashi every second time I go, it looks and tastes so amazingly good. Staff is friendly and the pantry is a delight. They would always give me helpful recommendation and advice on what to buy to get my hands on cooking some Japanese dishes :-) Thumbs up Hinoki!
Rachel Chui
Cheap and delicious 😋 the sushi is authentic & sashimi is fresh. Seating is limited though but most people take away. I'd definitely come back here to eat again :)
Den
One of the best places to have sushi in Melbourne. Located inside a Japanese grocery store, Hinoki prepares their sushi made-to-order. I had the King Fish Yuzu set and Sashimi Small set. The quality and freshness were exceptional. The yuzu mixed into the king fish was an interesting mix that surely delivered. There are only a small number of seats available for dining-in unfortunately, and the only toilets available were the public ones across the road on Smith St (I would try to hold it in if I were you...).

Definitely will be making another visit very soon to taste their other dishes.

It's really hard to get quality Japanese food with affordable price in Melbourne and this place is absolutely amazing! I shared the platter with a friend and we were happily bloated! I will definitely come back for more!
C
This is a fantastic place to get takeaway sushi and sashimi that also has a few seats at the entrance so you can eat in as well. Couple this with the ability to pick up some Japanese groceries and you have a wonderful addition to the inner suburbs.

Although I still rate Suzuran in Camberwell over this venue (and I think they are owned by the same group) because of a larger range and better sushi, Hinoki is still an awesome venue.

Highly recommended - one of the best sushi places in Melbourne.
Tanya Nguyen
Honoki is a causal Japanese pantry with lovely open and bright architecture and atmosphere. They also have a sushi canteen here where the chefs and staff were always smiling and ready to serve only the best sushi. The sushi is one of the best I've had that is affordable, quick, made with lots of care and precision. They also have really cute sweets to try! Would come again soon!
Kbrly
Little pricey but well worth it. The store was unique as it was a restaurant but with a convenience store in it. Needs more seating but overall was awesome! The quality was outstanding and the staff were attentive. Variety was overwhelming, will be back!!
Good Food Chaser
Love, love, love this place!

Seafood is always fresh. Even if it's actually not a typical restaurant, their food is a lot better than most of the restaurants. I have discovered this place just a couple of months ago. From then on I visit them at least twice a week. You can even ask for ice (free of charge) with your take-away - very ideal to bring to work, where everybody else would be jealous of your dinner.

Keep an eye on their offerings outside of the regular menu too, such as sea urchin etc. They also have Japanese groceries. And to add to all of these, staff are lovely as well!
PiggyCritiques
Half sushi bar and half grocery store.. This place is very similar to Suzuran in Camberwell. Amazing quality produced from the sushi bar. Best sushi & sashimi in Melbourne hands down, no joke. The sashimi was terribly fresh, in particular, the salmon.

Not much else to say, do yourselves a favour and check it out! :)
AH
Such good quality sashimi! The fish, in particular the salmon, just melts in the mouth, and it's nice to see them preparing it after I ordered so I know it's super fresh! The soy matcha milkshake is also outstanding, with it packing a punch but not being too bitter, and at $3.80, it was such good value! The daifuku are also really fresh, as they are so soft and evidently have not been sitting on the shelf getting hard like other places. With the most extensive menu I've seen in Melbourne, I will definitely be back to sample more from Hinoki!
Snoopy
High quality sushi roll, fresh ingredients, well presentation, quick and easy, value for money, would go back again. This shop also sells a great range of Japanese grocery.
DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
Our order took a little while to prepare but when it was finally ready, everything tasted fresh and was of fantastic quality. The grocery store section at Hinoki Japanese Pantry is impressive with a wide range of products ranging from Japanese curries and ramen to sake and green tea Kit Kats. This simple orderly store is a good place to head to for your Japanese grocery needs, as well as for delicious sushi and sashimi. Note that limited seating is available so getting takeaway may be necessary during busy periods.
Eat.Play.Shop.
I'm always on the look out for a good place for Japanese groceries and a good place for sushi. Hinoki Japanese Pantry has both!. I really like the range of Japanese groceries available at Hinoki. They have a great selection of essentials like sauces, noodles and cooking aids, as well as a fabulous range of rice crackers, sweets and snack foods that brings me back again and again!
J-Fo
Hinoki Pantry, a little grocery store/ sushi bar on Smith Street, Collingwood is my go-to place for sushi in the inner-north. It's Japanese-run so definitely points for authenticity. The sushi and sashimi are fresh and packs are reasonably priced from around the $10-15 mark. My recommendation - pick up a pack of Nose Maki - a colorful assortment of delicious little sushi pieces for variety and a Calpis drink from the fridge, plonk yourself down on the wooden bar near the door and you're in sushi heaven. I also personally like to bring along my own tube of wasabi as they only give you a small pack.
Alvina Chung
Love this place!! They have a selection of sushi packs on display but most go in and make a custom order to take away as there are very limited seats available. Sashimi was fresh, smoked salmon nigiri was to die for and the scallop ones were just so sweet and amazing.
Pyro
Lots of positive reviews and high rate, decided to try this place, entered to find it's half sushi bar half grocery store. Great selections of drinks, snacks and frozen goods to look for while you wait for your order. We had ordered the Nose maki Mix (a mix of tuna, salmon, kingfish, nasu, hote nose maki) very tasty dish with a nice variety of toppings including a dollop of sauce, spring onion, fish eggs etc however i found the rice a bit overpowering. We also ordered the Shoji's Bento (Variety of Seasonal Nigiri 5 pc includes salmon, king fish, tuna, sashimi, salad, variety of gunkan 2pc and salmon aioli 3pc
Alot of the pieces of sushi had a small amount of wasabi in them so if you're not a wasasbi fan, please advise the staff before you order.
Lastly we ordered the matcha milk shake for $2.80, very delicious
Overall very satisfying feed, price wise is reasonable, service was fantastic, able to customize your packs, pretty good
Kimmy_desu
Love the sushi here! Great quality, fresh and made to order. The sushi rice has the authentic taste and texture that many places fail to produce, and it's great just standing there watching them make your sushi. Not as expensive as I thought and very worth it, for a box like this it's $11, which is certainly not that pricey considering the quality. While you wait for your sushi you can also browse around for some of your favourite Japanese snacks and groceries, some of which you can't find in other Asian grocery stores. They also have a nice range of alcohol but unfortunately you cannot consume them in-store. It's better to buy the alcohol and get the sushi as takeaway and enjoy them in the comfort of your home :)

Recommended by my Japanese friend, this sushi place offers high quality food and variety of sushi. Price is reasonable. Definitely will be coming back soon.
George N Mandroulias
The restaurant is welcoming with friendly staff that are fast servicing. The sushi was cheap pricing, high in both quality and in quantity. Brilliant experience.

Stumbled across this place after a review in Good Food walked past many times and never thought anything of it. Walked in and was overwhelmed by their Sushi menu so many options to choose from maybe a little more expensive than usual but great fresh ingredients. The selection of Japanese groceries and quality ingredients was awesome as well will be back to stock up on Miso Paste.
Toby Gall
Absolutely amazing sushi. I've never been a fan of sushi before going to this place. The sushi is made to order, no old stuff just waiting to be bought. Great selection of Japanese food and drinks as well in store.

Delicious. Best sushi I've had in Melbourne

If you are ever needing beautiful Japanese food or produce in Fitzroy, Hinoki is definitely the place to go. Decked out with a sushi bar and small eating area at the front of the stall, and followed with a well-stocked imported Japanese grocery, it is a dream to wander the aisles and choose what to add to your cupboard. Nosé Maki Mix ($10.5) The raw fish is sweet and melts in your mouth. The freshness of the ingredients they use and the perfect delicate balance they achieve is truly delectable. The salmon with aoili and tobiko was delicious of course, with lightly vinegared carrot and soft sushi rice. If their sushi roll mix of raw salmon, avocado and crab meat were not enough, add in some tamagoyaki cubes and you have yourself a winner. TL;DR A go-to Japanese eatery and supermarket when you are in Fitzroy.
DuckieLovesToEat
I have been here so many times, its ridiculous. I count myself a regular customer. They serve delicious sushi and have a lovely staff. California roll, chuka chinmi, inari and seaweed! I can just imagine it all right now that I want to go back and eat them all again. I don't think I all ever get tired of this place and its scrumptious morsel.

Great. First time it was very very awesome sushi but the second time the grill salmon a bit overcooked. However,I will back to try another menu
Susan_marie
Great. I went there on friday morning and order suchi with urchin and some grill salmon .It did from the head chef and it was very very awesome so I went back again on Saturday morning with the same order but in second time the sushi it not nice as before the salmon it a bit overcooked .However, I think I will back to try again

My friend mentioned Hinoki Japanese Pantry to me once, but we didn't end up going. So when another friend suggested it again after her graduation, I happily obliged. After visiting, man, I'VE BEEN MISSING OUT ALL MY LIFE, FOR REALZ. Sushi bar at the front, Japanese grocery in the back, it's like, literally, all I need.

On my search for matcha green tea, I found this quaint little Japenese grocery store in Collingwood. Being relatively close to my placement I popped by one day but sadly there were out of stock of matcha, kindly they took my contact details and called me up when the order came through! I did expect it to be a larger store, based on the reviews of their products, but it actually is quite small with limited stock, and a larger variety of mainstream Western Japanese food rather than your traditional ingredients/flavours.
Kate Grant
Heavanly. The best sushi this side of Japan. No crispy chicken hand roll here. Order your sushi with the friendly chefs then take a walk around the store and pick out a cute chocolate bar or green tea icecream. If you are going far they will give you a complimentary icepack to keep your sushi fresh. Staff are gorgeous and eating area is clean (though small). Price is great and ingredients are quality. Can't fault it
Peanut_Girl
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING!!!!!!!. Amazing sushi + very reasonable price + friendly service = perfect for every meal.

For Sunday lunch today, Steve and I decided to pop into Hinoki on our way back from the supermarket. I also wanted to pick up some green tea and miso soup to have in the house.

I love visiting this little specialist food store. It's always friendly, well laid out and interesting to spend some time in.
The Brunch Journal
I have been a shopper at Hinoki (one of the few authentic Japanese grocers in Melbourne) since it opened late last year, although there hadn’t been an opportunity to try out their deliciously fresh sushi and sashimi offerings until a few days ago, when we were food hunting at 4pm on Christmas Eve for something healthier than a burger.
Lovefood
WOW. AMAZING sushi/sashimi, at very affordable price!
i live 40mins away from this gem but i come here atleast once a week!
you wont be disappointed.
Unravelled
Great find. Ate here for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Found the sushi to be fresh and innovative - enjoyed a set with nigiri and salmon aoli roll. However, the salmon served on the particular day we went was a very fatty cut, which is not something I enjoy very much (I like my sashimi much leaner). Ended up giving fattier bits to my boyfriend, which almost halved my fish consumption on the aoli roll especially. I feel it's likely that we just got a 'bad cut' for my tastes though, as he enjoyed his bento which used similar/the same salmon wholeheartedly with only compliments and no complaints! So great to find somewhere local that makes sushi fresh to order, and allows both dine in and takeaway. Found it to be reasonably priced, and enjoyed browsing the Japanese goods in the grocery section of the store before purchasing our lunch. Will definitely be back.
Jeanegg
The sushi is fresh and probably some of the best you'll try in Melbourne! The staff are also friendly and willing to help translate Japanese labels for you.
Fresh2D2
Beautiful place with amazing sushi and groceries.. Sitting at the window to eat, we felt like an advertisement as people (tried) to walk past but literally stopped im their tracks and decided to come in after see our beautiful scallop and sword fish order platters. Wonderful place. Well done Hinoki!
Bluecat
Ordered Futomaki n expecting it to be as good as Suzuran's Futomaki! It had too little unagi ( eel ) n it was blend. My cousin had salmon sushi roll n she said it was really good, but was disappointed tht they don't serve miso soup in summer :( . I would go bck again to try other items some day.
Fitz09
#1 for Sushi!. I love Hinoki and their helpful staff, I'm here almost every week and they've memorised my order haha. It can get very busy during lunch so go earlier (or later). There's also some space where customers can eat in store, but recently we've noticed other patrons who are not cleaning up after themselves despite clear signs of where the bin is. Please be respectful and mindful of others!
Luke Beaumont
Very good. Best sushi in Melbourne, easily. Also sell a good range of Japanese groceries
Filehere
New Favorite!. My Partner and I love this place. The sushi is always amazing, and we love their sake range too. We live on the other-side of town but drive there at least twice a week to get supplies and eat sushi. Highly recommend.

The best price for the freshest best sushi in town! This place never disappoints!
Angie
The most beautiful sushi I almost want to keep this place a secret. It's so great
Rachel
Lovely. Delicious sushi. so fresh and juicy and flavoursome. we got the seared scallop with hollandaise. yum!
Sally Tsang
Amazing. Best sushi I have had so far in Melbourne. Prices very reasonable too, esp the seaweed salad. Friendly staff.
Tales Of Fika
Best find!. Sushi is delicious, and the pantry is chock full of rare Japanese goodies.
Ronin47
Fresh sushi, great Japanese grocery. Came across this place wandering up Smith Street. Took a browse around the Japanese groceries but they have a large list of sushi that you can order and they'll make it on the spot for you. I had the mixed aburi set which contained fresh and seared fish in a bit of a mix. There's about 6-7 seats around a counter at the front that you can eat it but mainly people buy here to takeaway.

For drinking had the blue hawaii ramune which I had never ever seen before. Sushi took a while to make but have to say it was pretty good with the right amount of wasabi inbuilt.
Roger Kaputnik
Well worth a visit. The sushi chefs take your order and make it while you wait (though they do have some pre-made stuff too). Then you have to take it over to the cashier to pay. Sushi is pretty darn good and prices are not too bad given the freshness and quality. They also have a good Japanese grocery with a good range of sake (with interesting annotations) and some staples in the freezer you can cook at home like croquet and ramen. Seems to be mainly open for lunch only - Smith St is a bid dodgy after dark so prob no bad thing...Only downsides really are that it might be a bit slow if they have a lot of orders (not that many staff) and if you want to 'eat in' just a few seats.
Wen
Such delish sushi rolls. The sushi rolls here are so good, full of flavor and creativity, plus the store which has a real feeling of japan, i would say this is a piece of japanese treasure in fitzroy
Miyuki Yagisawa
Our new favourite sushi place in Melbourne! We usually go to Suzuran for takeaway sushi but Hinoki is much closer to the city and there are a few chairs and a table at the front of the shop where you can sit and eat - great for people like myself who can't usually wait :)
Clement Lu
Good sushi n very fresh sashimi.. Most stuff r from japan... Favourite grocery place...
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Of particular note were the spicy tuna and salmon aburi. The spicy tuna had a lovely creamy spicy mayo that was more subtle than other spicy mayos I’ve had in the past. I did find the dengaku sauce on the eggplant a little too sweet for my liking. All the sushi had nicely packed rice and a good balance of sushi vinegar. I was curious to find out what was in the centre of these nosé maki because I

Fantastic value, top notch quality sushi, and a Japanese grocery all bundled into one.
Confessions Of A Little Piggy
Each maki roll was packed with the most perfect grains of rice - plump and vinegary, hugging fine shreds of carrot and cucumber, and then adorned with the freshest ingredients. In order, there was salmon with ailoi and tobbiko; tuna with spicy mayo; and king fish with yuzu kosho and yuzu tobikko. Let's not forget about the seared salmon with a nutty sesame dressing; and the nasu dengaku ! I particularly enjoyed the nasu dengaku - grilled eggplant glazed with a sweetened miso. The Salmon Aioli was also memorable, with the salmon so lovely and tender, creamy aioli and bursts of tobikko. No doubt

They serve the best sushi I have eaten in Melbourne, at very good prices considering the freshness of the sashimi. I highly recommend this place to anyone who likes sushi – there are heaps of options on their takeaway menu: nigiri packs, maki packs, sushi packs, and larger platters.
Katherine Chiu
... But if you aren't up to cooking there are 89 different sushi meals for you to try. Here I had two handrolls at $2.90 and $3.20 each. The rolls are in packaging so you are expected to un roll it and roll it back up. If you are not too sure your friendly waiter will help you.
Petit Miamx
The store is expansive and so sleek - split between the sushi bar and the rest of the store catering to a vast variety of Japanese groceries, liquor and frozen goods. I was completely overwhelmed when I looked up at the sushi bar as they offer a range of sashimi, nigiri and maki roll packs and platters. Despite the face that I was only buying dinner for Mr A and I, I ended up opting for the largest sashimi and sushi platter, recommended for three to four people, and was ready to go after ten minutes of browsing the grocery side. Our platter was love at first sight! The sashimi were all incredibly fresh; the buttery salmon was my favourite, while

Hinoki Japanese Pantry is a Japanese grocer plus sushi bar on Smith Street in Fitzroy. They sell a range of Japanese foodstuffs: snacks, condiments, beer, sake, and frozen goods, but there’s also a sushi bar where you can buy sushi or sashimi to take away.
