Grabbed Nigiri Sushi Set. One of the best sushi venues in Melbourne - kept simple and focused on the freshness of their ingredients. As soon as you take a bite, it's evident that they use very fresh ingredients (no pre-made bs). Absolutely delicious :) Rice was also tasty and easily dispersed in my mouth as I chewed. Very reasonable price considering the quality of their sushi.
😱Lizzie’s first impression: Cute Japanese pantry on Smith St, extremely popular and fresh sashimi.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: Literally one of the best sashimi and sushi places I've tried in Melbourne. The platters are so affordable for the amount and quality of the sushi. The staff here are so friendly and they sell a wide range of Japanese snacks which makes me miss Japan even more. 🍙🍣🐟 Can't wait to come back to try the other sushi packs!
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: The packs where it looks really aesthetic with the sashimi on top, they are filled with sliced carrots in the middle..so by the time you’ve finished the pack, it starts tasting like carrots instead.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for sashimi and salmon – the fish is definitely fresh and delicious.

With lockdown in place, got my wonderful boyfriend to pick this platter up for me. Service is quick and easy with online ordering and friendly staff. Can’t say much since the sushi platter says it all. So much variety with such a pretty layout that gets my pallet prepared.
Each sushi is treated with such precision and care, that the taste doesn’t falter after another bite. If I had to pick, the star of the platter was the inari sushi range. It was the unique presentation of the inari that is made very differently compared to other sushi restaurants. The balance of flavours was executed excellently, with the sweetness accentuating and intertwining with the umami of the prawn, chicken or mayo.
Another favourite was the salmon aburi with the cream cheese. I love my cream cheese, and I love my salmon - what a better way to combine these two different worlds of culture.
The salmon and prawn were so juicy and fresh which did the classic nigiri sushi justice. I, however, am not really a wasabi person so the wasabi they add to keep the sushi intact was just a bit overpowering for me, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
We shared the platter between 3 people, and price was average; I wouldn’t say it tastes drastically phenomenal compared to regular sushi, but you can see the distinct quality of their fish. I also wished they had available sushi with fried elements, since I’m a foodie with an eye for fusion of culture and taste. But would come back for a nice picnic or catch up with friends!

Such a pretty platter and not expensive at all for fresh sushi. The salmon sushi (pictured on the left) was so yummy and the favourite of the platter.
Their seaweed salad that you can get since they’re also a convenience store was really nice and refreshing and should be bought too which is just located in the open fridge.
Would definitely come back here again to try different sushi’s on the menu.

The best and most affordable sushi I’ve ever had! The fish is so delicious and fresh, I really can’t fault it at all!
Another day and another review deleted by a Zomato. My latest review has been deleted again.
Anyway the service at this Japanese pantry is always lovely and very Japanese. They have a small selection of groceries which are fantastic.
I brought a Sushi Nigiri large day which was soo good. Think fresh salmon, salmon belly, fresh tuna, fresh prawns, sushi and egg.
This was just delicious and my partner and I just devoured it hahaha .... more more more please!!
It was a great meal, and I was so excited to see that this place is still open at the moment for take away. Happy days.
This place is definitely worth a visit. Pre order is best so you pick it up n go.

I've read great things about this place so I took my friend here tonight. This place is like a Japanese pantry, as you walk in, you order your food and then you can browse the isles to buy some Japanese food, either fresh or frozen.
We ordered the large Sushi Mix with some unagi (eel) and we waited whilst it was made fresh to order which was about 15 minutes tonight.
The sushi was served on a big take away platter and it was really fresh and tasty. We really enjoyed this dinner tonight and the opportunity to browse some Japanese food in the pantry.
I brought some sake but you can't drink it on site, even with dinner as this place is unlicensed. So we had take away lol
One thing to remember, this place closes early so check the opening times or you may miss out.
I visited recently, I have only had take away but not eaten in. I was expecting a restaurant, however this is more of a supermarket with a side sushi place. Nevertheless, a great place to visit which was very unique
A great menu, I couldn't decide on what to order. My sushi rolls were great, very fresh ingredients and I loved the freshness of the side of sashimi I ordered too.
I will definitely be back when in the area.
Freshly made sushi and sashimi for takeaway only. Also has other Japanese pantry items for sale.
Suggest pre-order online or phone (if can get through). Otherwise may have wait times up to 2hrs for walk in orders
This was the freshest sushi I’ve had in a long time. The sashimi melted in my mouth, the cuts of fish were perfect, the bite-sized sushi rolls were packed with flavour.
They’ve got heaps of variety on their menu so you’re bound to find something you like. Customisation is also available for events. The value is incredible for the quality you get. You can order online ahead of time for pick-up or order in store and browse the endless range of Japanese goodies while you wait.
We ordered:
🍣 Sushi Sashimi Medium
🍣 Nose Maki Mix
🍣 Nose Maki & Inari Deluxe
This place is a cult favourite for a reason, the lines outside are no joke. I highly recommend for some authentic sushi and sashimi. I already can’t wait to make my next order!
Beautiful sushi and sashimi fr Hinoki. Placed my order online and it was efficient and very affordable. Satisfied with the quality of food here and the grocery store stocks a massive selection of Japanese food which is cheap!
Would definitely recommend this place.
Best place to get your Japanese supplies. Love their kitchenware and their Japanese drinks selection. Got a hibachi there and it’s the best thing ever.
Hinoki Pantry is absolutely superb, they have a great range of Japanese products good service and most importantly amazing food. I cant recommend this place enough, I've been all over for sushi and I think this is hands down the best in Melbourne!
This is a very authentic and very hip Japanese pantry store. They also have very good quality fresh sushi platter takeouts. Couldn't believe how many people came to this store and it was packed. The quality of the products are excellent, authentic Japanese. Highly recommended and would come back again for the Sushi!!!
Sushi platters are always great at Hinoki. A slight premium but you get some very nice & fresh sushi options. The mix sushi platter is always a favourite of mine. Combine this from their range of saké and you're all set!
They also stock a good range of Japanese products, snacks, drinks, crockery and cooking items. Hinoki is my go to for sushi and anything Japanese.
Amazing sushi, top quality, fresh! The supermarket itself has a great selection of japanese goods!
