This is it. This is the best banh mi in Melbourne. The bread is outstanding, almost flakey on the outside but tender inside. The fillings in the crispy pork roll are fresh and flavoured perfectly but the real winner is the addition of big croutons that soak up the generous amount of juices and become crispy flavour bombs. A touch pricey at $7.50, but it’s perfect.
BBQ Pork Roll/Banh Mi great tasting, pretty quick service, hand sanitiser available on the table if you require. Price now is $6 for most of the rolls with the exception of crispy pork roll which is $7.50. It is different from the menu pictures posted. Please take note!
Great Bahn mi and Bun bao, delish!
Fantastic bakery for other Viet foods, one of the places I stop by when visiting dad.in Footscray.
Love the banh mi here, always good quality and fresh, absolutely delicious.
My score 3.75 stars (worth a revisit). J got takeaway for dinner from here on Mon 16th Dec. Service really nice. No vego buns left unfortunately (about 5pm).
Pork bun ($3.50) – Humongous. Dough slightly dry in one bit, but rest nice and fluffy (had travelled TBF). Filling was like a solid chunk of roughly minced pork (slightly sweet and with food colouring), rather than the separate dark saucy roast pork I’m used to. It was interesting, but I wouldn’t have it again.
BBQ pork meatball Bahn Mi ($5.50) – Roll crisp and tasty. Meatballs moist and tasty, but too sweet for mine. No peanuts! I would try a different filling next time.
Tofu Bahn Mi ($5.50) – Tasty and J liked it quite a lot. The tofu was cut smaller than Nhu Lan and was less sweet (both good things). Another point of difference in the filling were some sort of crunchy croutons – interesting and enjoyable.
Hands down one of my favourite bahn mis in Melbourne. I don't know why, but something about their tofu roll is better than anywhere else's. The mayo makes it extra creamy and the marinade is great. Staff are also incredibly nice. Don't forget to suss the selection of packaged cakes and mock meats as well 🙌
We loved 😍
The banh mi rolls here are delicious. It’s a great quick and easy feed. Their break is baked fresh and they have a few different flavours of banh mis. My go to is the bbq chicken.
Definitely a must-visit everytime I'm in Footscray. They offer a lot of things from banh mi, pastries, and ready Vietnamese snacks and desserts. My favorite would be their chicken puff and sesame balls!
This is a busy bakery in the heart of Footscray's food precinct. It is always full of customers and service is very business like with little warmth but they get things done quickly. They have a variety of sweets in conjunction with the usual suspects - banh mi, spring rolls, fried chicken and pies. Highly recommended!
Went here after being previously disappointed at nhu lan a few doors down. In terms of meat quality I would say not the best, however salad ingredients were fresh af and the bread was nice aswell
On par with Nhu Lan’s bbq pork roll. Great flavours and texture and only $5. The roll was really fresh. Only let down was the pork was a little chewy.
My go to for banh mi in footscray. I'm basic so I just get Bánh Mì Thịt Nguội . Its been around for years it feels like home. If you want a legit Vietnamese Australian experience go here.
I always get my banh mi from here, it's a Footscray classic. The tofu is really well marinaded so it actually has a great flavour to rival the meat versions.
One of the best banh mi for Crispy Pork filling. The baguette was undeniably fresh, so crusty on the outside, soft pillowy on the inside. Perfect for each bite with the crispy pork crackling inside the bread. The meat was tender, cut into small little juicy pieces with a dash of gravy and soy. Banh Mi heaven for me.
I don't usually review take away places but seriously I had no choice as To's Banh Mi is the best I have tasted. The bread is so fresh, where every mouthful the crust crumbles and breaks (the very happy seagull hovering around me can vouch for that.) The Pork full of flavour with added cracking all combined with the fresh ingredients of lettuce, cucumber, carrot, spring onion and coriander and added sauces and this all for $5.50. You will not get better!!
To's definitely rivals Nhu Lan Bakery (a couple of doors down) when it comes to Banh Mi (I had the tofu), in fact I actually enjoyed it more. The roll was fresh and cruchy, tofu was thinly sliced, flavoursome and peppery and there was a balanced amount of chilli/other ingredients. Would definitely go here again, especially when the Nhu Lan Bakery line is out the door...
The steamed combinations buns don't look appealing: a puffy white blob the size of a fist, wrapped in plastic. The green dot on top differentiates them from the pork ones. The filling has meat, shiitake mushroom, a little bit of an egg and something crunchy I think was water chestnut. The buns are excellent, really exceptional, tasty and hearty. The sticky rice with coconut was very good. A large meal is less than 10 bucks. Takeaway only
Normal banh mi offering and really interesting bright green sweets. We tried one of those bright green ball balls which the staff told me was mung bean and coconut glutinous rice ball. An interesting combo of sweet and savory. Also tried this bright green and light yellow layer dessert. The texture is like hard jelly and mushy grainy pudding. Sounded weirdly awful but it actually tasted great!
Not sure what all the bad reviews (below) are about, I have been here twice in the last week and both times I thought the bbq pork Bahn Mi were on point! (My favourite will always be N. Lee on Smith street though!)
Fresh and crispy bread roll; hot tasty bbq pork. Rich pate. Fresh herbs. Pickled veg. Nice sauce and crispy pork floss/crackling. $6.50 (including extra meat) made by a lovely lady with a huge smile and super fast Bahn Mi making skills. Best in Footscray so far. I'll be back!
Whenever I am around the area I always get 2 kinds of Bahn Mi from To's. Freshly made while you wait. Succulent roast pork with the lot - paté, chili & all for my hubby and fave Tofu Bahn Mi for me. I like it with lots of fresh coriander! Yum! I always take the biggest bite so pics have to wait 'til next visit. I also get extra fresh fried chicken and charsiu bao. Delish!
Love the vego fob rolls from here, it's always fresh and you can ask the lady for extra ingredients. Tofu is a bit dry but the sauce is flavoursome and ties it all together. Overall lovely genuine customer service from a humble bakery 👌
The crispy pork banh mi is delicious! You get the joy of crispy crackling in a crusty bread roll. It's a toss up between To's and Nhu Lan but I would happily eat banh mi from either spot.
One of my favourite places in Melbourne and my 'go to' spot for banh mi. The ladies that work there are all friendly and super consistent with their preparation of the rolls. This is a must visit for fans of Vietnamese rolls and snack food!
My babes and I have been going to the Footscray Lunar New Year festival for the last few years together. Last year, she introduced me to a delicious coconut dessert that we bought from a stall outside of To's Cafe and Hot Bread and I was looking forward to having another one this year.
I initially ordered just a few Pandan Crepes filled with Coconut, as you could only buy them during the Lunar New Year Festival in Footscray. But after chatting to one of the guys preparing other foods at the stall, I ended up buying a fried dessert I've never seen before; a Bird's Nest Cake (Banh Tai Yen).
Watching the lady preparing my Pandan Crepe is interesting as it starts off as a green powder with a similar consistency to flour. It's sprinkled evenly onto a hot pan, where it binds after a few minutes of cooking, then it's lifted off the pan like a crepe. Before it cools, the crepe is filled with slithers of coconut, roasted sesame seeds and crushed peanuts cooked in some type of sweet sauce, then folded like a wrap. The texture is grainier and a little more chewy than a crepe so I recommend eating it warm and as fresh as you can because once the crepe starts to cool, it becomes hard and nearly inedible. Although the crepe itself lacks flavour in my opinion, once you bite into the coconut, sesame seed and peanut filling, the sweetness balances out the bland crepe and it's absolutely delicious!
The Bird's Nest Cake, or Banh Tai Yen in Viet, was a total surprise as no one described what it was before I bit into it. The circular cake, which doesn't resemble any birds nest I've seen, had crispy edges which crunched under my bite revealing a soft, but dense, dough which had the feel of fried rice flour. The dough wasn't as sweet as it looked but you can definitely detect a strong coconut flavour with traces of tapioca. Being Filipino, I love these flavour combinations in a dessert so I couldn't get enough of it and I wished I bought more than one.
Whenever Lunar New Year comes around, I immediately think of the Footscray festival where my babes and I purchase one of the more delicious Vietnamese desserts in my opinion. I wish To's Cafe and Hot Bread would cook the Pandan Crepes filled with Coconut more often but I guess making it once a year keeps it special and something to look forward to when it's Lunar New Year festival time.
BBQ chicken banh mi - not sure if the bakery usually makes it fresh (we went quite late in the evening) but our rolls were premade. Regardless, bread was good, lovely golden crust with fluffy insides, and unlike some baguettes I've had, this did not require too much work to chew.
Consistent. They have the best puff pastry (a must-have for me whenever I go past here) and the banh mi is pretty good too. Prices are definitely much more reasonable than Nhu Lan and better service too.
I love To's. To's is great! They do tofu banh mi like Nhu Lan does but it's marinated slightly differently. Their taro buns are so great too! Yum!
Great Xiu Mai Banh mi. I LOVE the pork meatballs cooked in the tomato based sauce here. My favourite Banh Mi filling EVER. So good when the roll is super crunchy, the daikon and carrot and coriander and really snappy and the meatballs turn the centre of the roll into a steamy, silky, gooey goodness, melting the butter and pate. It's a mouth sensation that makes me crave a second one before I've even finished my first (but of course I don't get a second!)
Love this place, best fried chicken fix in Footscray - those chicken wings are HUGE and always delicious (though I find they could do with some seasoning -chilli salt would be AMAZING).
Worth checking out!. From the bakeries I have tried in Footscray since I moved here at the start of 2013, I would rank To's as second.
Their BBQ Pork Rolls are great, but maybe not quite as high quality as Nhu Lan, the chilli has more bite to it though and that's always a plus. At the price, they make a good breakfast hit if you're in a hurry for class!
One stand out feature of their menu are the fried chicken wings. These things as delicious if fresh and at $3 for 5, you're getting a nice deal. Unfortunately, they stale very quickly sitting in the Bain-Marie. If they are fresh though, grab them up!
Always a favourite. I've been coming here for years. Never disappointed. The best Vietnamese rolls in the west!
Footscray is totally spoilt for choice when it comes to awesome bakeries, but To's is right up there. It's a toss up between here and Nhu Lan but I tend to frequent both because they're both delicious.
Pork rolls here, this is why I love food in Footscray. For some reason Nhu Lan a couple of doors down is the one that’s gone viral, but To’s is just as good in my book, and doesn’t have the queues. The price has recently gone up to $5, but it’s still excellent value.
Off to To's when Nhu Lan is CHAOS. Generally we plan our Banh Mi outings to Nhu Lan to ensure that we do NOT arrive in peak hour (11.30 - 2pm) on a Saturday. For some reason we were in the area and got a craving so we thought we would do a drive by and see what the situation was. I have never seen the place so packed but there was NO WAY i was leaving empty handed so off to To's I went to see if their offering was up to par. Got a BBQ pork and a Meatball. The only thing I could fail was that the pate was heavily sloughed on and it was a bit overpowering. Next time I will ask for no pate and I reckon it would be puuuurfect - heavy on the meat, the vege's were fresh and crisp. I will be back again to try some of their take home offerings all beautifully packaged and presented (ban cuon, some sort of papaya pork and prawn looking salad etc) The price was right $10.50 for 3 rolls!!! Personally Nhu Lan just pips them at the post for Banh Mi but there is no way I am going through the madness that is Nhu Lan in peak hour. Def check this out if you dont like to queue.
Bahn Mi virgin. Had my first Bahn Mi today- fantastic! $3.80- a bargain. Highly recommended.
Not sure why Nhu Lan has crowds out the doors. This place is the bees knees of banh mi!
Inexpensive but sooo expansive. Good bread. Plump pork buns and huge chicken pieces, breadcrumbed to perfection at $1.50 per bone! Recommended
