Really lovely service again and a huge improvement in food from last time because we chose better! Way too much food, so good value.
Eggplant Nasu ($6ish) – Just as good as last time and still a big serve!
Curry Veggie and tofu Don ($13ish) – More tofu (lightly battered too) than veg, sauce had some kick, very moreish.
Grilled Unagi and egg Don ($15ish) – Yummo. Moist eel, lovely basting. Accompanying sauce only required for egg.
August 2018 (dine in). Japanese tea was complimentary at each table.
We shared: Yasai (vego) ramen - We were asked whether we wanted standard broth (pork?) or vego, and we chose vego. In hindsight that may have been a mistake, as it was very mild and dominated by seaweed flavour. Poor.
Agedashi Tofu - Was quite nice.
Assorted Tempura - Had a few prawns and only 2 sorts of vegetables - the batter was quite thick and a bit coarse, rather than delicate and light. Average.
Nasu dengaku - Was the star. A huge piece of fried eggplant served with a tasty miso sauce and mayo. Melt in your mouth soft and incredibly comforting.
Not our cup of tea, but I think we could have chosen much better from the menu.
We go here every Friday with our 3 year old for dinner - the food is delicious and served in no time. Love Sekai.
Had an enjoying seafood udon, didn’t think the chef be to appreciate for me to ask some change to their manual. But I ask them,to add miso soup instead of their normal stock soup, then I ask for runny egg and lastly to double my portion of udon. It all went well,than came the bill and to my surprise it was under the amount I expected...

I love this place and go regularly. The prices are great and the serving sizes are on the large side (if I'm not very hungry I take a container and keep half for lunch). I'm vegetarian and love how many veg options they have - my favourites are the tofu curry don and tofu teriyaki don, but I also like the ramen and udon options.

I usually come here with my family at least once a fortnight! The service is very polite and prompt. We're always seated immediately and handed menu's. There's complimentary tea at each table. Very casual atmosphere. You can almost always expect some chill Mariah Carrey vibes in the background. I highly recommend #3 the omelette on rice with chicken, so simple, such a great comfort food. If providing food for multiple, definitely try the Gyoza pizza!! overall, will continue coming here x
Little place in Footscray selling some japanese dishes. This place been open for years and we come here to eat once a month to enjoy some noodle and rice dishes. For the price and the quality it’s not bad.
Humble joint in Footscray Market serving amazing Gyu Tan Don! Much much better tham those over rated outlets in the CBD. The ox tounge is quite tender with tasty red wine sauce and a hint of chilli and spring onion. The aroma send the dish to a whole new level 🤤 Oh and the silky smooth omelette too yumm! Serving was generous also.
Must order: Gyu Tan Don, ask for extra chilli if you dare 💣💥
I had the katsudon. Quite a generous serving with a lot of rice. Flavour isn't bad and staff were friendly. Partner enjoyed his curry chicken chop don. Plenty of curry sauce. Will be back to try other dishes
Had the Shichimi Spicy Chicken Don with Takoyaki on the side. Hands downs amazing food at an affordable price. I am the biggest fan of Japanese food and everything hot and spicy. This place ticked both those boxes, would go again. If you guys are in the area please go in and try it. The bowls are big and definitely filling. Worth the money, lunch or dinner. Couldn't give you 5 because the chicken curry was alright, wasn't the best we've had.

Well it's Tuesday night and time for another Dad-venture!! Tonight I was a third wheel with my cousin Jake and his rad girlfriend Jana.
We hit the road to Footscray in search of good Japanese food and found Sekai, just outside the Footscray Market. I immediately fell in love and I don't even know why.
Sekai is simple, the interior is nothing more than a small kitchen, a few tables, and floating fake fish in vertical tubes of bubbling water. It's the coolest, and the food is great.
I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Don which was delicious. The chicken was tasty and was lightly fried, which went so well with the teriyaki sauce. The shiitake mushrooms were my favourite and worked well with the chopped carrot, beans and green peas. The way the carrots were chopped reminded me of my nanna (who is the only other person on the planet who cuts carrots in perfect circles).
Jake ordered the Katsu Chicken Don, which is fried crumbed chicken pieces in a curry, served with potatoes and white rice. The fried coating on the chicken tasted crispy and light. The curry had a nice spicy flavour that reminded me of a south East Asian type dish.
We also ordered a serve of the gyoza dumplings. The gyoza weren't bad, but we're definitely initially frozen. They were searing hot and lacked flavour. I actually burnt my mouth, which was totally my fault as I shoved the whole thing into my mouth at once.
Sekai is a 'cheap eats' that boasts a lot of character in its simple, tucked away little abode. It's traditional Japanese won't wow you but will leave you satisfied and with change dangling in your pocket.
My verdict: WORTH IT for meals under $12.80.

*THE* best gyu tan don in Melbourne, hands down. Someone prove me wrong. The chef has been here for decades and his consistency, amazing flaming wok skills, and simple marinade makes the dish.
The $22 price tag for the signature ox tongue don is a bit over the top…. But 5 stars for the food itself.
Stopped for a quick lunch while shopping at Footscray Market, located on the outskirts of the market and very clean. Friendly customer service and welcoming. Loved the Tempura Tofu and Chicken Katsu.
I order from Sekai every time I have a craving for chicken curry don, because theirs is the absolute best.
First time visit and thought it was pretty good value. Katsu chicken curry was well crumbed and not too much sauce. An excellent lunch, I would be happy to come back.
Gyu tan don (grilled ox tongue on rice bowl) here is amazingly good. I've been to this restaurant many times over the years, brought many friends over and have always been pleased. Experienced consistency and quality. Family style, in the Footscray market building serves well for a tasty lunch or an informal dinner.
