Awesome place and food.
Highly recommended!
Dim sums galore
Somethings just never change.
You'd go to a place like this for purely for the food. It's like the place hasn't changed in the past 20 years. Basic white interior, direct and blunt service, hot tea in a stained tea cup. Great place to reminisce to be honest. Now I wouldn't say this is the best Chinese restaurant, but it's definitely not the worst. It's the sort of flavours that you'd expect when you go to Hong Kong and hit up some small take away shop, except a little bit more salty and a lot more pricey.
For four people, we ordered 4 dishes and 3 bowls of rice. This turned out to be more than enough and we even had enough for some take away. On average, it was about $20pp, which I believe is pretty average for a dinner like this.
This place needs more credit. The roast pork here was amazing and lots of veggies packed underneath. Delicious healthy free soup too! All for only $11 I was left feeling satisfied and very full. Great value for money will be back to try the other dishes
Friendly staff. We had the fried rice, roast pork and roast chicken with steamed rice. All very good. Rice had good flavour and roast meats well cooked- not dried out. Also had the prawn dumpling soup. Delicious! The setting is basic but it is worth going there.
We came to Golden Horse Seafood restaurant for mud crab noodles but were told they sold out all their crabs over the weekend! The waitress suggested we order their lobster instead so we did. The lobster is fresh from the tank. The waitress even showed us the live lobster to our table before they cooked it in the kitchen! We were served complimentary Chinese tea, prawn crackers and soup to start. We were also offered house made XO sauce and freshly cut chilli to go with our dishes. The ginger spring onion lobster noodles was a decent serve and was delicious! We also order a mixed stir fry vegetable which was actually too much for the two of us! The portion was too much so we asked for take away container! To finish, they give us complimentary fruit platter which was a nice touch! Overall, the lobster was quite expensive at $78/lb and the lobster noodle dish alone costs over $200 but it was very well cooked. Worth it for special occasion.
I ordered the fried noodle combination, which was a dish I tend to order in Asian restaurants when I can't decide what to order. I thought the noodles were very crispy and the meat was cooked well. Customer service was also good.
A great place to come for some decent tasty yum Cha... service was efficient and friendly... far nicer and better food than mother yum Cha houses in Melbourne! Come and enjoy!
Not a big fan of the yumcha here it just misses the spot every time, however live seafood the mud crab never disappoints my partner or myself
Located conveniently on the corner of Hopkins Street and neighbouring Footscray Market Golden Horse is a delightful Chinese seafood and BBQ restaurant.
Staff are always welcoming and friendly.
Food is very filling and tastes amazing, the only tiny bone to pick is the amount of oil used in the dishes- there's quite a lot. Nevertheless, the food is great and Golden Horse is one of our regular places to eat.
This particular visit we ordered (see photos) 1x stir fried scallops with vegetables, 1x combination mushrooms with snow peas, and 1x salty fish, minced pork and eggplant claypot.
At the end of the meal, you are presented with a small complimentary fruit platter which is a nice finishing touch.
Not a bad little place , we were visiting some family in footscray , and a friend said there's a place where we could get some yum Cha and close by, so we had to try.
They don't have much selection as the bigger yum Cha places but was given a menu that we could order from and cooked fresh .
Dumpling servings were decent and love the rice paper prawns and prawns in bean curb skin.
Had to try some duck whilst I was there , wasn't too bad either , but if you're looking for a little spot to grab some yum Cha that's in footscray then def come give this place a visit.
Good yum cha for a decent price - not the overpriced stuff you get elsewhere. Better when busy because the selection is bigger and the food fresher.
I've been coming here for yum cha regularly for over a year now. Its no nonsense and no frills kind of food. The carts come by relatively quick even on a busy day so you can be in and out in less than an hour which is pretty handy for staying under parking time limits.
This place has a limited amount of Yum Cha and depending where you sit you may have to keep flagging the trolleys down to get them to your table but if you get them, you'll get good prawn dumplings every time. The prawns are big and delicious and the price is good.
Egg custard bun is so delicious crusty outside but moist inside. The yum cha are overpriced. Roasted duck on rice is slightly better than hongkong bbq but the veggie side is not fresh. Clean place too
This has definitely become my go-to yum cha restaurant. The delicious morsels of dumplings are tasty and fresh. I can tell they use much less msg here compared to Gold Leaf. The braised tendon is fantastically soft and gelatinous. Service is as expected. Chaotic at times but none the less amusing. Price wise they are great! Will keep coming back!
Yum cha. Myself and my partner had yum cha at the Golden Horse today, we were very pleased with the food. The individual portions are very large, the shu mai dumplings were probably twice the size of other places, and there were 3 per steamer basket. We had the shu mai, prawn and chive dumplings and special ordered the beef in long noodle, but got served what I think was probably pork as the meat was very light in colour. Everything tasted very fresh, especially the "beef" in long noodle which had bursts of fresh lemon grass. Other items we had was prawn in coconut, prawn in wanton pastry, prawn and eggplant, and mango jelly. If you like prawn based dishes this is the place for you. If you're looking for other items you'd have to ask for them to be specially made.
My partner had the chicken feet and these were different than usual (with plum sauce) - they tasted like a Vietnamese hot satay sauce, and were very nice if a bit hot/chilli. If you're expecting plum sauce on the chicken feet you might be disappointed.
All in all we have a very nice meal and I'm glad we tried this place out, but in all honesty we'll probably go back to the Golden Leaf in Sunshine for future yum-cha ventures. We will definitely be back to try the BBQ pork and rice one day.
Service was good, and I recognised a familiar face from back when this place was the Master, which was a nice surprise.
This place is great!!!! Super cheap and yummy. The best yum cha dishes were the BBQ pork puffs that are the best I have ever eaten and the uber delicious prawn and sesame rolls! We had 9 dishes including takeaway egg tarts and it cost $36.60!!!! So impressed
Delicious, fast, cheap, fresh yum cha. We descended on Golden Horse for Yum Cha soon after reading a review on the Footscray Food Blog and we were not disappointed. We arrived soon after the lunchtime rush on a Sunday and were lucky to be seated immediately at a table for two (as the restaurant was otherwise full at the time). The service staff were flat out busy but remembered our requests for tea and water. The most important thing - the food itself - was fresh, cheap and delicious. They served many of my favorites - including lots of steamed dumpling in rice wrappers (I can't eat wheat). We thought it was comparable quality to Gold Leaf where we often go with our family - but all the better for being local and cheap. Can't wait to go back again - next time with a bigger group so I can try more!
