Review Habitue - Fremantle

Laura Zeljeznjak
If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. The menu, while small, was jam packed full of amazingly and carefully curated dishes that wowed the tastebuds. The kangaroo and potato egg breakfast I got was by far one of the tastiest dishes I've ever had. Incredibly tender, expertly prepared and flavours that popped with every bite. My partner got the bean, bacon and egg breakfast which was plated and prepared with love and care. Even the drinks were made to look and taste pleasing and did not disappoint. Kelly made our whole experience even better and has created a place with amazing staff, warm vibes and the best food I had in Perth. If you have questioned if you should visit, don't, just go! My only regret was I couldn't go there for dinner.

Gorgeous! The new menu is delicious and a must try, especially the Sunday Brunch. The poached salmon in beurre blanc with wattle seed was divine, fresh & rich at the same time. Must try the confit duck with plum & waffles. Favourite dish is The Avocado toast with fresh Australian botanicals, could eat that every day. The mimosas and Bloody mary's were also a massive hit, will be returning every weekend to try the whole menu!! Thanks Habitué crew, so happy to see the restaurant being revitalised! :D

Lunch with a friend on a Sunday and for some time we were the only ones there. We sat next to the strange sitting water feature outside, which I guess is what ended up attracting the mosquitoes. I ordered fish of the day which was red snapper. It was delicious, but it also wasn't cheap. My companion was very impressed with her steak.

We sat on the outside table which was a comfortable temperature considering the May weather. 10/12 of the family ordered the banquet menu which was more than plentiful. The lamb, cauliflower and beetroot were standouts. The lamb was falling off the bone, the spices on the lamb was authentically Mediterranean and delicious. The grain salad was ok but lacking acidity and texture. The crispy potatoes were awesome but the sauce that came with them was too thin and tasted of milk. My boyfriend got the steak an although the flame grilled flavours were good, it was very chewy in my opinion and it said it came with sweet potato, but they were chips so definitely order a side if you want some proper veggies. To finish, they gave us an assortments of sorbets which were outstanding - the raspberry was my favourite. The creme brulee was a big let down. We got 1 to share between 10 and it had lemongrass in it- the perfect way to ruin a brulee I think. The wine and cocktail selection was good but very expensive. We paid about $80 a head in total. I'm glad I tried it, definitely great service and chilled vibes with great late night jazz playing all night but the limited parking for a sat night and the hefty bill will leave me unlikely to come back.

I don't usually post negative reviews because I don't think it's fair to the business, so I won't put less stars. But we didn't have the best breakfast here. The staff were very lovely and attentive but the mother's Day breakfast was not great. The toast was so hard I couldn't eat it, and the beans and sausages were cold when they came out. Maybe we just went at a bad time. But I didn't enjoy it.

This was a lovely place for a winter brunch. Coffee was amazing and the vegan option was so fresh and yummy. Will definitely head back for lunch/dinner. Highly recommend!

Lovely location, yummy cocktails, great tapas & share plates. Staff friendly, just slow on the service side of things.

Amazing dining experience! We went as a large bunch of people and felt spoilt because of the great service. I have to commend the person who served us drinks in particular, his ability to keep all our drink orders in mind and serve exactly the same was insane (we were 16 🤯)! A must visit in North Freo!

Great tasting food. They are all of great quality. We particularly loved the fried chicken, the cauliflower and the hand cut chips. Delicious!

Unfortunately it wasn't the best experience as we found the waiter a bit patronising. We had the 50% Fork deal and maybe that's why he acted like so? Shouldn't be an excuse to treated us as such.

Such a great evening here. Beautiful ambience with a live band and mood lighting, delicious food and great service. Terrific vegan options too!

Came here for dinner on Friday night- it was a last minute decision but we saw there was some availability on the online booking system and thought we would give it a go. This place is incredible. Intimate, cosy and romantic. The staff were all soo lovely. Food was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend. In the entertainment book also. We will be back!
The Food Dude
Amazing atmosphere with a beautiful rustic feel, incredibly conducive to a great night. The food was great, especially recommend the chicken main as well as the cauliflower starter, all dishes best shared. The real prize of this place is the authentic, original and homely vibe of the restaurant with the fire place and the live jazz band. Wine was great as well and staff were very welcoming and friendly on the night.

Just. Love. This. Place. The old Harvest has been reborn into a mature, beautiful song of wonderful atmosphere, delicious food, friendly service and great tunes. The slow cooked lamb shoulder was amazing and I can’t wait to go back for more.

I have always wanted to go to Habitue and finally my husband and I went here with some of our friends. We did not regret at all coming to this place. It was such a romantic place, the ambience was really nice and charming, and the staffs were really friendly. Food was good but the portion was a bit small. My favorite was the cauliflower dip.

I would really recommend Habitue as a romatic dinner spot.
Withapinchofsalt
Habitue honestly has it all - charming, rustic ambiance, a diverse menu based on local, fresh food, excellent service, and a great wine list. Not to mention they do accomodate food intolerances and the staff were happy to help me find some gluten free choices. Highly recommended!
Epicurusfoodie
Slightly noisy jazz as we walked in. Romantic spot with sort of rustic kitchen that you can watch while you wait for food. Service was efficient and courteous. The pork cigars were delicious and haloumi salad also good. The beef tartare special and bbq lemongrass kitchen had interesting flavours. They were tasty but not the tastiest dishes ever. Would say interesting flavours rather than tasty.

Well, my wife and I noticed this place as we drove past and decided to book on a whim, not looking a reviews. A cosy, warm enters ceremony with jazz band, dimmed lights, an atmosphere to be appreciated.
The menu, simple, demonstrating a chef who will do things well. We were not disappointed. A true test of a chef is his vegetarian ability so we only ordered vego. Cauliflower, sweet potato and bean dip to name but a few. Flavours and textures tussled in our mouths. I gave Habitue 5 as it ticks the boxes, good atmosphere, timely meal prep, reasonable prices. Will be back again!

Can’t say no to a lovely dinner by the fireplace @habituefremantle. Chargrilled octopus with salsa picado, roast capsicum and hazelnuts; Confit duck leg with pork and chicken liver panko round, px & prune; Tuna nicoise; Fish special- garfish with artichokes and olive oil; Sweet potato with white bean puree, macadamia and caper vinaigrette; and Scotch fillet with cafe de paris for mains. Dessert: Chocolate sphere with tea & saffron ganache and praline; and Lemon and buttermilk pudding with thyme, lemon and cream. Just delicious!

My favourites were the Tuna nicoise- the fresh seared tuna just melts in your mouth; and the lemon and buttermilk pudding. Love the textures and lemon flavours throughout the dessert. The chargrilled octopus was cooked perfectly. The cocktails were just as delicious. Definitely coming back for more.

I can't fault this place. The service is excellent, wait staff have real personalities and are attentive. The food is beautiful, lots of wonderful meat and veg dishes. Seated under trees with soft lighting in the front yard, or in the lovely interior. It's like you've entered a really nice house for dinner. Live music sometimes fills the air, but not too loud that you can't talk. Highly recommended! A hidden gem.

Love the setting of this restaurant. It’s like walking into somebody’s house, with a nice fire going and cosy seating. We ordered dishes to share between the 6 of us including the slow cooked lamb shoulder (which was the standout), prawn dumplings (nice), Duck confit (quite tasty), sweet potatoes, hand cut chips , shaved cabbage & Heirloom carrots, all of which were pleasant dishes. Finished with the Chocolate & raspberry cake & the Vanilla mascarpone to share which were both ok but nothing special. Atmosphere was good with an elderly gentleman playing live music a little later in the evening, service was also efficient and friendly. Menu is a touch limited in my opinion (only 3 mains, 5 vegetable based side dishes and a few starters). On the whole though, the food was good (taste and quality wise) and the dining experience itself was great.

Love this place so cute and cosy yet so spacious. Wait staff was very attentive, polite and friendly without being in your face. We ordered almost everything on the menu and walk away full and satisfied. Value for $$$ we definately come back❤❤❤

Simply Amazing
Believe the reviews... Habitue, so aptly named, we will be back... This probably the only restaurant I have a ever been in easily the last 12 months where every single dish, recommended specials and the service totally exceeded our expectation... Is it worth trying... it’s now on my “this is my favourite restaurant list”..., And it’s not just good, it’s fantastic... Will I be back... It will be hard not to...

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here this evening, loved the Szechuan caramel duck, barramundi with creme fraiche and grilled corn! the chips are always a great addition! Remember to save some room for dessert, the passion fruit posset( similar texture to panna cotta/cream) and the orange cake with coconut foam ❤️
Food InJustice
Zomg. Have to come back. What a gem. Excellent food and the desserts are a bit different. Nice work! Meat dishes are good, but I always differentiate by the non-meat dishes on offer. Cauliflower dish and quinoa corn are on point. And the hummus in the octopus dish, you just wanna scrape it all up with more bread. I’ll be back.
Foodieperth
Highly recommend the food here! We ordered the gnocchi special- very well pan fried and full of wonderful flavours, cauliflower- nice flavours, however there was a bit too much cauliflower for us :) and the chips, which were nice.
Little Epicurean
Great service, waiters were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable with the wine. There is a lovely alfresco area with grape vines, perfect for a sunny afternoon or evening although it was a rainy evening when we were there. This is a tapas style restaurant with dishes designed to share, menu is small but done well. We ordered a number of dishes to share, some were great such as the scotch fillet. The duck breast and fish of the day was also nice although both were just a touch overdone for my liking, loved the corn salsa but found the zuchini salad a lil strange. Some interesting desserts, i always love to try something a lil out of the ordinary when im out and was skeptical about the pink peppercorn ice cream initially but took a punt and was pleasantly surprised. Goes very well with the frangipane & foam, the rhubarb was a touch underdone tho and a lil difficult to chew thru. The choc paradise cake is also beautiful a standout, so moist as is the orange posset. Looking forward to returning on a sunny afternoon.
AngMohAsian
Really really impressed. The octopus was love me freakin tender and meaty, and the fish with the creme sauce was insane! Totally would go back. Service was awesome too! Some of the best in Perth!

I was so not expecting anything great! But I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is cosy with a nice atmosphere. There was a live band playing and an open fire. And as for the food, wow!! Every thing we ordered was on point, delectable and so much better than the menu seems. Would highly recommend for a couples date!
Perthfoodie
Amazing food. Great atmosphere. Be great for a date or catch up with friends. Pricey but worth it! The ambiance on jazz night is spectacular.

Good vibes and nice live jazz music!
A bit higher price but well worthy! Main dishes were all in large portions, food for sharing. We ordered fish and chicken dishes and they were both so fresh, tender and delicious! Definitely will come back here.

We were seated immediately upon arrival. The restaurant is just off the Main Street but beautifully surrounded by trees. Definitely coming here on a nice warm day. We ordered empanadas (a stand out), celery salt hand cut chips with aioli, house pickled vegetables and the octopus along with a ginger beer and cocktail the bill came to $84. The service was great, the waitress was friendly and informative. Definitely coming back soon!

Love their cute little place. We were greeted with a friendly waitress and she seats us at the back of the restaurant. It was a great night with great food and wine. What stands out is the cauliflower dish, fish and char grilled beef dishes as they're just so tasty and the beef is perfectly cooked. Just what we needed to catch up with a couple of girlfriends. Will definitely come back to try more!
Panda Friend
Expected a better service but food was delicious. Took someone 15mins to take our drinks order. Waiter told us snapper was the fish and a different waiter told us it was cod when it was served. We asked about it and they came back saying snapper had ran out and now it's cod. It would have been nice to be told before it was served. When we recieved the bill, the bottle of wine we ordered was $10 more than what the menu had stated. We queried the waiter and he corrected it. Wouldn't expect these things to happen at an establishment like this.
Pennae
Stunning food. Dishes are designed to be shared, which is just as well because you'll want to try everything. Come with a group if you can! A small selection is also available via UberEats (it'd be great to see a couple more meat dishes on there).

Fantastic Valentine's dinner last night! Easily one of the best dining experiences my partner and I have had in a long time. The food was delicious, especially the silverbeet dish, and was brought out promptly by very attentive staff. Live music added to a very cosy ambience and was perfect for a romantic evening out. Top marks!

We were not disappointed by our meal at Habitue. Although the service was a little slow at times.

The octopus that we had as our starter was probably the most 'average' dish we had, which is the only dish we had that seems to currently be on their menu.

For our main, the four of us shared the lamb shoulder special, the corn (with popcorn and chipotle mayo), the zucchini and pea salad and some chips. The lamb was very tasty (not too fatty as slow cooked shoulder can be) and the corn had excellently matched flavours, a creative dish which I particularly really enjoyed. With a couple bottles of wine and two desserts we thought the bill of $300 was really reasonable.

We'll be back next time we are in Perth.
Gourmet John
Not amazing. Some solid dishes to be had here, but as with many perth restaurants there is almost always something amiss. Service was just ok, with some young inexperienced staff floating around. Cocktails took at least 30 mins to arrive, enough time to reconsider ordering them. They were nice however. Octopus was awesome, cauliflower was delicious, steak as a main was ok not great. Duck was good too. We has to send back a smoked dish as it tasted off, we got an apology and some kind of explanation, but nothing on the house - very perth. Wines on offer were poorly selected and none of the 3 whites we tasted were great, they were ok. Parfait was a real surprise, absolutely great. I recommend going across the road to Propeller, wher Gourmet has been twice, they have the trifecta great food, great wine & great service. Gourmet John had an 'ok' experience at Habitue for the fine dining dollar outlaid, not great. Gourmet won't be making a habit of hanging at Habitue, how bout chew?

I don't review places, well at all really. But this place certainly deserved one. I took my partner out for dinner here on a Tuesday night. We arrived around 6:30pm. I was really impressed with the place at first glance. The old renovated and transformed home was beautiful, with an amazing ambience about it. The decor, vegetation, cool lights constructed from old colanders, the wood flooring and the vintage piano, were all wonderful additions to the ambience. But boy did it get better! Ge service was great, our waitress explain every element of what we ordered well. The wine and tapas style food were simply excellent. The only little criticism I have is that the octopus and mussel dish ($18) was nice but tasted as if it were out of a jar. The price was a little higher than average but having said that I'm still in live with this place. Give it a go.

UPDATE: Pictures from most recent meal in Aug 2017.
I have been three times over the past 18 months and the food is delicious. We go for all vegiatarian dishes and order 3-5 dishes and its such a yummy way to eat. Service is always professional and friendly and a great ambiance for intimate meals.

Honorable mentions to the cauliflower (not pictured here because i ate it too fast) and the brussel sprouts
Lauren Thayer
Rating this a 5/5 because it was such an amazing experience! Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Wine selection is fantastic and staff are very knowledgable. Food was the best part... if you go you must have the brussel sprouts!! Heaven. The atmosphere is really cosy and would be good for couples and medium size groups. The live music was incredible and added a great point of difference compared to other similar places.
PacMan
I liked what Hanitue were trying to do....each dish was an elemental showcase of its 3-4 major ingredients all working together without complex additions.

The problem was these major components were sadly lacking.

The octopus and hummus dish ($18) was acceptable, but slightly chewy and definitely unexciting and the mushrooms and bocconcini ($18) was much the same (with the latter ingredient conspicuous by its scarcity).

For the main event, the beef, probably the best dish of the night, but for $34 I have to say I expect more....

And more I did expect until presented with what must have been the most albino salmon to swim in an ocean, ever.

To reiterate an earlier point - ingredients and quality there of, are vital.......

It tasted like it looked. Anaemic and surrounded by supermarket vegetables.

The dessert, a banana and passionfruit chiboust, was about the only dish which had significant flavour. And then probably a bit much according to my better looking dinner companion. I, personally love passionfruit, but you had to in order to enjoy this dish.

The service was friendly and the ambience ok for an evening out. But, really, for a higher level establishment I do expect more.

Wouldn't recommend.
Sybarite
Disappointed! Surprisingly, as the rating here is fairly good. Service was lovely and I love the outdoor parts of the venue (NOT into yellow walls) but the food was very disappointing. The fish was the worst I have ever had. Completely tasteless, quite bizarre. The steak was ok but nowhere near worth what it cost, and it came out lukewarm. Octopus wasn't the best, and more boring than simplistic with just the hummus. Mushrooms were nice but hardly any cheese (more garlic pieces than cheese). I found the passionfruit on top of the dessert (chiboust) completely overpowering, just as well as the chiboust itself tasted of nothing. Thankfully we were here on a Dimmi 50% off deal. I have no intention of returning.

Lovely venue tucked away in Fremantle. Perfect date night spot. Cauliflower was delicious. Portion of fish was smaller than expected for the price. Choc fudge dessert was very rich.

Awesome place. The laid back setting is fitting for any meal and occasion with the bonus of a wood fire on cold nights. It suits dates, casual meals, dressed up dining and parties. The cocktails were great and quick, to come out.The service was fast and very professional with good knowledge of the menu and drinks. The food though, was fantastic.Chargrilled octopus was full of flavour and texture (not in a bad way though) with a great bed of smooth mash.Lamb rump was perfect with the cauliflower. (Two separate dishes). All in all, a great little restaurant that should stand the test of time. We'll be back many more times.
Nirvana_Perth
This was great little place...very cosy with a crackling fireplace and plenty of outdoor seating available. The food was divine, we had the slow cooked lamb which was melt in your mouth and seriously just fell off the bone. We also ordered the roasted cauliflower with pine nuts which was faultless. They have a pretty good selection of cocktails and we were quite happy with the Jalapeño mojito and espresso martini we had. Will definitely head back soon!!!

We wandered in without a booking to try our luck in snagging a table, it was 545pm.

Two front of house staff argued over the possibility of seating us, discussing who could be moved, how long we could have a table for....all whilst we stood in front of them! Not cool and of course we didn't feel very special. We were then seated @at the front door and next to the cutlery, napkins etc. Staff were leaning over us to get cutlery to set up tables, one staff member even told us we had the best table in the venue!! Yeh right.

Onto the food, we had the oysters, they were very nice. We also had the octopus, that was not so nice, I found it tough and tasteless.

We won't be going back to Habitue.

We couldn't decide where we wanted to go for a nice Saturday lunch. Scrolling through Zomato, this place came up which reminded me I have been wanting to back to this place for months. Our first visit was about this time last year. It was a great visit back then and just as good this time.

As it was a warm sunny day we sat outside in the cute courtyard area. Inside they have a piano for their live music nights on Saturday.

The wine list has some great wines available by the glass, carafe and bottle. It's nice to see some European wines for a change.

The food menu changes with the seasons and has plenty of choice for vegans, vegetarians and meat and fish eaters too.

After ordering a couple of glasses of wine we started with some pickled vegetables and smoked almonds. We then moved onto a white bean dip served with flat bread. We finished off with some mushrooms, broccoli and hand cut chips. All delicious.

I'm looking forward to coming back on a Saturday evening to enjoy some music and try some more dishes off the menu.

Great service, great food and wine in a lovely setting.
Eatingismyhobby
Oh my gosh.....where do I start?! This place is very typical North Freo- trendy and quirky. We went last night and there was live jazz playing which added to the atmosphere nicely (not too loud!). It seemed reasonably busy inside, probably nothing out of the usual. The staff seemed a it hectic and not really organised as it took a while for us to get a drinks order through and then order food. Several of the wait staff asked if we had already been served.....that's my only (small) gripe. Other than that, they were really friendly and helpful. Next- the food!!! Oh my gosh, it was incredible. We had empanadas (best I've ever had) to start along with the smokey eggplant and flat bread. Next we had the baked fish which was divine, and mushrooms. Finally (we were full by now but being greedy) we had the beef. It was sooooo yummy, it came served with the most delicious smokey flavoured sweet potato purée I've ever had. In addition, we had a cocktail each which were balanced perfectly. It's not cheap here, but you'd come for a special occasion anyway. I'm definitely going to be coming back!

Been here a couple of times now and it has been 5 star food, service, wine, and ambience. Everything to make the perfect dining experience. Last night we went and they had a little jazz band trio playing and the wood fire going and it just set the mood from the start. The wait staff we super friendly and efficient. All the food we ordered was ridiculously tasty. And it was great to see Swan Valley wine on the menu which we ordered and loved. Definitely will be back for dinner very soon!
THE ILLUSIVE FEMME
An old house converted into a charming, little rustic restaurant. The interiors are absolutely stunning and the vibe is so warm and inviting. Our party of six was seated at a booth towards the back of the restaurant and the wooden tables were adorned with soft cushions and throw rugs. The menu is all about sharing and our charming waiter explained the portion sizes for the dishes we were interested in. The service was exceptional! Our waiter was a dapper man who had much knowledge of the dishes, matching bubbles and everything in between - he was wonderful. We decided on the daily special to share, the slow cooked Lamb Shoulder. We were told it had been slow cooked for around 15 hours and it was obvious with every bite we took. The meat fell off the bone and it was rich in flavour and so divine. We also tried the Baked Fish. Wrapped in baking paper and cook with potato and leek the dish was delicate and again, melt in your mouth. The sides were equally as lovely - particularly the Mushrooms and Boccacini with Garlic. Desserts were also delicious - we had one of everything but my favourite was the Saffron Poached Pear with Marscapone. Sooooo good. Everything was perfect, we had such a lovely experience. Thank you Habitue!

Habitue serves hearty food, with unpretentious service in a laid back atmosphere! I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant, given that the last time I was here was in the Harvest days. On this occasion, we sat outside and it was a balmy evening. Started with a nice G & T, and moved on to chargrilled squid ($19) and zucchini flowers ($16). My only criticism would be to 'char' the squid a little more for more smokiness- I get there is a fine line. The special of the night was a seafood bouillabaisse- which was amazing. The stock was packed with flavour and the seafood (moreton bay bugs, prawns, fish, mussels) was cooked to perfection. The tones of live jazz in the background made this a wonderful night out!
Pancake
We were drawn into Habitue by the music and were very glad we did. We sat outside under the lights on a balmy night and enjoyed French Riveria cocktails followed by dessert (chocolate marquis- delicious) and coffee. The atmosphere was great, the service efficient and the staff were very friendly. A good spot for kicking back...

Love this place! The food is gorgeous, just like sharing a dinner with family. Plates of meat, prawns, vegetables. Love it all. All done perfectly.
The ambience is also like a big family meal. Busy but joyful! The courtyard out the front is magical.
Annette Evans
Set in a converted house on Harvest Rd, Habitue was the perfect lunch spot on a sunny afternoon. Underneath the leafy canopy shading the front courtyard, Scotty and I enjoyed the casual atmosphere and excellent food on offer. Another courtyard out the back looked very inviting, and I could picture the different rooms inside coming alive in the evening.

Went here using a Dimmi Rewards voucher and so glad we did! What a fantastic spot hidden away in North Freo. The decor is funky, the staff friendly, service fast and the food was outstanding. We tried the smoked eggplant dip, broccoli salad, corn salad and the chips. Most delicious vego meal I've had in a long time! We also had a few ciders and the bill was just $87 (before our discount voucher). 5/5!! Will definitely go again!
Cornflakegirl
Such a quaint little place I love the way there menu is just one word with a couple of ingredients. Waitstaff really knowledgable on all the dishes and drinks. We had the oysters which were a little to creamy for me but I should have asked where they were from! The zucchini flowers, the beef empanadas. We squeezed in a dessert the chocolate salted caramel and macadamia. Oh my god so delicious not to sweet well balanced and soooo tasty.
CDfoodie
We had a fantastic dinner at this restaurant tonight! Excellent food and service, the meals came out promptly, there was a live jazz band and we were able to redeem a $40 discount via Dimmi from reward points. My husband had an Old Fashioned which he said was excellent. The food highlights were definitely the Baked Fish, Corn (and popcorn), and the Broccoli (with avocado). We would have preferred the Corn dish to be warm but it was still delicious as a cold dish. We will definitely be visiting again!
Ross
Amazing service, setting and food. Excellent experience from start to finish. I love the good food and atmosphere every time we visit.

One word " Divine".
Hand cut chips - Not healthy but very yummy
Peaches & Cream - Shortcake and Mascarpone - very good love it!
When you make a booking make sure you mention you want the table at the rear court yard. ......will surprise you!

Tick tick tick. Great food, great atmosphere, live music, love that it is an old house converted into a restaurant. Grilled prawns with the creamiest cous cous I have ever put in my mouth. Fish in a parcel - like opening a present! Broccoli and avocado is a match made in green vege heaven. I will be back for more! Head on over to Mrs Browns across the road for a night cap and you will be a very happy chappy!
Wags Out West
Thoroughly disappointing evening that was was only saved by the live band.

Habitue is in north freo tucked around the corner from propeller. It's s small place with lots of high long benches and tables. It had a nice ambience due to the larger than life band entertaining us.

These are all minor complaints but there were so many and they all add up to a bad experience.

I booked a table for two yet we were shown to a table for 6-8 then told as it was only us we'd need to be moved to a smaller table. Then we ordered drinks that took 30mins to arrive and were not what we ordered.

Our waiter then came back to us and apologised but he forgot to put or order in the system after taking his time serving us in the first place so we ended up waiting an hour for a food to finally arrive.

Habitue offer a range of tapas style food that you share.

We ordered the brisket, corn dish and grain salad. The brisket was one of the worst rip offs I've had, it was supposed to feed two but barely enough for one. $36 for about 150g of chewy brisket with s drizzle of salsa verde that was more than half fat and gristle. The whole point of slow cooking is to render the fat down. The corn and grain salads were $16-19 each, and were quite nice although nothing like the description (I'm not sure I'm ready for popcorn in my salad) and I almost broke a tooth on a lemon pip in my salad. Despite ordering one main meat plate and two sides to share we left hungry.

I complained about the brisket but was told by the waitress that it's meant to be that way and next time I should order something else. No apology. I was about to order more drinks and dessert but decided after that comment, against it.

On the way home we stopped elsewhere for the rest of our meal and dessert and will not return.

Went with friends last night to their favourite Nth Fremantle restaurant. Night started off with piped music so loud I thought we were at a night club. They eventually turned down the volume, to be replaced by a 3 piece jazz combo who were great but still a touch loud for dinner conversation. Though people rave about this place, I was disappointed by the size of the portions and their cost. The Grilled prawns were a bit much, thought the couscous and fennel bed was very tasty. The Zucchini flowers were tasteless, bar a hint of the fromage blanc. The nectarine salad should have been a little more generous and the corn which was a spoonful of corn nibblets and a hand full of pop corn was a shocker. The baked fish (five thumb size portions of Rankin Cod) was moist and meaty, but offered nothing more to the palate. A couple of other dishes and dessert, came to the same price as the 2 bottles of wine. Though the staff were helpful and friendly and the place gave a relaxed vibe, I did expect more 'bang for the buck'.
Bustola
Truly one of the loveliest restaurants we have tried in a while! The ambience was just right, with cute furnishings, apt music and the service was faultless. We had the summer menu of brisket, cauliflower, grain salad and nectarine salad with oysters to start and it was just perfect. Will definitely be back for more!!

My first review was 3.5... back again tonight and wow. Better than the first... food even more impressive than before and better service. Welcoming, understated and elegant but down to earth. Beautiful atmosphere and live music... this place got it goin on. Im a Habitue convert for sure. Love love love it. 😍

Date night... I booked and requested outdoor seating... we were running late and I called ahead and spoke to the lovely Therese (whom I later noted as MOD) who advised we could take our time. Perfect start.

When we arrived there was a seating delay - no one to greet. We waited 5 minutes, but enjoyed this time observing the surroundings and the live music (divine) until we were ushered to our table.

Menus were provided and as first time goers we were explained "how it works"... med-styled sharing plates with freshest daily ingredients and outlined some specials. Cool and clear. We were left with menus.

We worked through our choices alone. When it came to ordering, the guidance was vague. Meaning that we didn't really know how much to order and what dishes would come in what order (we were informed the kitchen would determine that). Upon taking our order, a lovely male attendant suggested we'd chosen a lot of protein and perhaps some veg would work with it. I agreed and chose the broccoli dish. We had ordered 5 dishes at that stage. I thought perhaps that was more than necessary but hey. We pressed on. Also I would have liked the opportunity for someone to recommend me a wine based on our mostly seafood choices. And most of the wines were European, so hadn't heard of many. I took a stab in the dark as a result.

Wine and beer came. Shortly afterwards our first selection... the cuttlefish. It was absolutely extraordinary. Both hubby and I were like... wow. I remarked to him based on that dish, expectations are super high.

Next (seemingly perfectly timed) literally as we had just finished the last, came the baked fish, which was teamed with the broccoli dish. Well, they were a great combo. Spectac.

At this point I felt good... but rushed. There was no time in between to talk about wine and I would have liked to have had the option to order another more suited to the cusine. And they decided what plates to bring in what order... another mistake.

The next was our "hand-cut chips" with cape grim beef and smoked pumpkin puree... gorgeous in theory... and we both felt let down in practice. Having enjoyed cape grim beef in tassie we felt it was not honored here. The smoked pumpkin purèe was gorgeous! It really was... but not enough of it to balance the meat and the chimichuri well... it just doesn't cut it compared to the true Argentinian style... so don't call it chimichuri... its just not that. Call it something else. And the meat itself actually left oil swimming on the plate. Gross. Overall between the chips and the beef it was oil overkill and we felt bloated.

We did highlight our concern about the fat on the brisket to a very sweet attendant and she suggested we dig deeper on the plate for less fatty meat... we did. We still felt ripped off. The photo i add shows the oil that at the time we couldn't see (dim lighting)

What started as a romantic night for two, in what can only be described as picturesque settings, quaint, cute, but slightly uncomfortable (if they really strive for guest comfort why not get some proper fluffy cusions on those hard wooden benches?) The ones they have really feel like a token effort. And what about the lanterns at the tables? Wasn't just ours... my hubby lit the candle for us himself.

I would love to give these guys a 5... i think they can achieve it. But for us our experience this evening... well they've got work to do. There's much more i can say but no more time.

Really nice place.. great vibe, good food and great staff has the Sweetlips blowing bubbles over Habitue. Went for a midweek dinner and loved every part of it. The staff were awesome, really knew their stuff and every recommendation they had from food to wine was on point! Well done and will see you again soon.
Two flippers up! 👍 👍 🐠

A knockout. We were a walk in at 2pm on a Saturday, graciously welcomed and experienced the most professional and delightful service. The joy of sharing the dishes cemented a new friendship. Such talent in the kitchen! Thank you Habitue` - if only I knew how to pronounce you :)

Incredible food, atmosphere, furniture & alfresco dining. We enjoyed the venue on a sunny spring day. Venue is hidden gem but you can park right outside. It looks tiny but is really big. Food is designed to share & is surprisingly varied! Highly recommended!!!

Very nice place, quite romantic for a date. Food was good but maybe a bit expensive for the quantity. Service is good when not too busy otherwise it's just standard.

pretty disappointed with the whole experience really.

Service pretty poor.

Food just Ok.

Wine list limited and expensive.

Our bottle of red was hot, like drinking tea, had to put ice blocks in each glass!

Not going back.

The perfect anniversary lunch? Pick a quiet spot in a lovely old house, add some good service, a couple of glasses of bubbles and the most delicious food. Think prawns with oyster cream, cauliflower with almonds, dates and cumin and then eat some wonderful fish with nori butter. Follow this up with pecan and date tart served with rum marscapone. Finish off with some really good jazz tunes in the background and you have the perfect anniversary lunch. Now for next year!!!!

I'm a habitual pencil smoker. Whenever I'm at work I like to kick back between tasks (replying to an email from last week or wondering why I lied about being 'proficient' in excel when I applied for the job as I can't even figure out how to make every second line a different colour) and recline in my chair. As I do this I often take a pencil (or a pen if I'm feeling luxurious - smoke 'em if you got 'em eh) and blow faux smoke rings across my desk towards my colleagues.

I'm guessing Habitue is French (or Greek) for habit? I mean it's just a guess and I've got myself into trouble guessing before (Thailand!)

Anyway, I digress. The food here is great. Small finely crafted dishes to share, my companions and I went deeper than a Gina Rinehart mine and tasted perfectly balanced morsels including grilled prawns, cauliflower and dates, octopus, and finished on some sassy little deserts. I had a delicioso (Greek again) little chocolate mouse thing - they called it some complicated French or Greek name. Was great.

I think the price is a little spicy though. Dinner for 4 with a drink or two each was about 300 clams. Which is ok but probably not where you'd bring a blind date. I want to say similar to Bread in Common but maybe a smudge below.
Still v good.

Tucked away in a little weatherboard cottage house in North Fremantle, Habitue is a neighbourhood gem worth travelling out of your way for. With a seasonal menu using fresh, local produce, Habitue may just be my next favourite spot serving up a variety of comforting Mediterranean food with great flavours.

Love this restaurant - great plans for sharing the food experience - great atmosphere - love the fireplace -great winter venue. Very good service, friendly knowledgable staff and good wine list.

Attempted to go without booking but failed due to table full, so we went one week later with reservation. All I want to say is it worth a week's waiting and expectation. Thinking about dinning with living lounge band beside fireplace, fantastic atmosphere!
Some of foods are in French name but basically all are modern AU style, delicious and friendly to everyone. But when we want to order a drink for a lady there is only one choice of cocktail without alcohol...maybe the beverage list is too short. Anyway you cannot miss it but do mind your reservation.

Amazing!!
We rocked up late on a Saturday night with no booking just on the off chance of getting some food. No problem! Pretty rare in Perth these days!

Then the food was fantastic as always, we ordered only veggie dishes because I'm a vegetarian and my friend is tolerant :) and all of them were prepared to perfection!
We drank a lovely bottle of Matsu tempranillo wich accompanied the food wonderfully.

The service was really good, our Italian waitress was lovely, attentive but not too much. And the owner Therese is always polite and helpful!

Great job Habitue! We will soon see you again, earlier in the eve this time! :)

A little gem in North Freo. It was 8'o clock on a Saturday, the crowds were ushering in. The buzz was friendly and service was too. The decibels can be bothersome. The wine list kept me happy and it complimented the slow cooked lamb. "I'll be back" but don't know how soon, there more to relish in Perth?
Bad Boy Toni
A tumour on the restaurant scene of Fremantle. It started with the hubristic weirdo waiter, continued with patrons piercing screeches amplified in a banal and over-entitled pit, and finished with an incredulous fuctardery of a menu no better than a coles shopping list. We walked out. Never to return. Shame.

Gorgeous food, excellent service and great live music. (Jazz) a lovely European feel and certainly a new favourite. I could not fault it. Shared the lamb shoulder (succulent), haloumni (fresh and zingy) and the cauliflower (perfect balance of crunch and spice).
Adt071
The food is excellent along with the atmosphere and staff. When we go it is usually for the special which could be a kilo of slow cooked, 18 hours, beef or the lamb.
The house wines are also good.

Go and see for yourselves and share a great meal.

Best Restaurant Ever. Love the food, service and atmosphere. Such a great restaurant.

Fantastic Mains. Entrees and mains are classical and inventive, very modern take on some staples due to well thought out accompanying ingredients and the presentation is beyond reproach, I certainly wouldn't reproach it. Only complaint would be portion size on some dishes and as mentioned by others the wine list is wanting on both depth and availability by the glass.

The proteins are the reason we'll be going back though, fantastic all round but do yourself a favour and get the beef ribs while they're still on the menu. The best beef ribs I've ever had and I do not fuss about when it comes to meat; I have my own meat slicer and industrial spitroast so please trust me people, these ribs are the truth. Service; good.
Racheal_1970
Great food, great service, friendly efficient staff. One complaint - no good south australian shiraz on the wine list.

Having dined at Barque and absolutely loved it, we finally decided to try Habitue - unfortunately the night turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I've had in Perth. I don't mind paying money for perfect food - even if the serving sizes are ridiculously small. Unfortunately Habitue plates tasteless (in some cases seemingly prepackaged food), charges criminal amounts - and you still leave hungry

Service - Service was fine. Our waitresses were pleasant enough. Eventually as it got busier, service started to lack. I had to ask for my drink at least three times.

Food -

Cheese Churros / pumpkin, dukkah - Churros were tasteless - doughy, flour taste. Served with 'dip', to which I most liken to a cheap version of 'french onion and chives' you would get at the supermarket.

Crispy Pork Rillettes / relish - Definitely a stand out on the night - as in horrifically bad. I can only assume these were pre made. Served luke, warm the deep fried exterior made it impossible to identify what meat was in the middle. I thought for a moment it was SALMON. Couldn't finish dish.

Chargrilled Cuttlefish / salsa verde - Nearly had to ask for a steak knife so I could cut into the minuscule serve we were given. Eighteen dollars payed for five tiny pieces of cuttlefish - 1cm in thickness.

At this point we didn't know whether to call it a day and just go home - or go to Bread in Common. We decided to continue, at this point the food picked up a little bit.

Grilled Haloumi / zucchini, peas, mint 24 - Good flavour combination - although the haloumi was a little tasteless.

Cauliflower / almond cream, dates, parsley 18 - Probably the best dish of the night. $18.00 for 6 pieces of cauliflower.

BBQ Chicken / tahini yoghurt, pistachio 32 - This dish was ok.

At this point we should have just gone home, but decided to get dessert. We would have been better off getting a SUNDAE from Mcdonalds on the way home. If you don't avoid this place altogether - at least avoid the dessert menu. Both desserts were as hard as stone and were impossible to cut into.

Ice Cream Sandwich / halva, cherry, pistachio 15 - the ice cream had ice crystals from prolonged exposure to the freezer. Was absolutely tasteless. The prepackaged 'Giant Sandwich' you get from the shops for $4 was x100 times better.

Chocolate Salted Caramel Tart/ cream 15 - Again, even 'Home Brand' boasts a better version. Disappointing.

Will never return again.

A Little 'Bummer' - hard seats outdoors, limited drinks offerings and high end prices - quality atmosphere and good food. The summary of our group on a first visit to Habitué was that it needed some 'cushioning' ...and the owners might have to rethink and extend the limited beer and wine choices and an erratic arrival of dishes. Having said that the service was informative and excellent, atmosphere and live 'jazz' music added to the evening but the hard benches in the outdoor area, even with a thin covering for the well padded caused us to leave early ... go with your cushions. We were a little disappointed with the small servings on so-called 'shared' plates - but to be fair the waiter informed us that we should head further up the cost and menu scale if we wanted more ... didn't quite happen with the 'shared' snapper at $36 nor the 'bugs' where one split bug did have not enough volume to share and at $29 was also a little 'rich' ...the quality of cooking and presentation was high and 'armed' with a cushion each for the derriere, or alternatively sitting in a booth inside - we might review again in the winter.

Pathetic banquet. Beautiful surrounding. Woefully disappointing banquet. Left feeling empty and disappointed. If I was a pig I would expect you to disregard this comment, but I'm not. Do not expect much.

A Must Try!. A lovely little restaurant for a tasty meal. We had the cheese churros (so more-ish!), the melt-in-your-mouth oyster blade steak and beautifully sautéed beans. Plenty of vego options available too. Dessert was great - the ice-cream sandwich got the thumbs up and the salted caramel chocolate tart was divine! The staff were also fantastic - knowledgeable, discreet yet attentive and more than happy to replace my glass of wine when a mosquito decided to drown in it... No need to book (although we went on a Tuesday night), but maybe a good idea for a big group. Also a good idea to allow for time to find a park. Highly Recommend!

Such a great night!. We went to Habitue because my friend, Ross, was playing music there with his trio. We had a great night and not least because Habitue excelled.

We were very well looked after by Therese, the manager, and also two French wait staff. One (I think her name is Maya) impressed me greatly. She had a doubt about the somewhat more expensive than usual Chablis that I ordered. I know when wine is off. I thought it was okay. She wasn't so sure and I insisted she have a taste. Pas Bon, she concluded. When we got the next bottle, it was absolutely stunning, a wonderful wine, and vastly better. She was right and what a difference it made that she picked it up.

The food was excellent. Tapas, or sharing plates - every plate was seriously good without exception. I did struggle to get my head around $24 for a tomato salad (it was beautiful but still). I am being picky now.

Between French attention, French wine, and my friend playing alternately piano and accordion, we could have been in Paris in the 70s (when I lived there). Yes, so nostalgic for me, but it all really worked well in the present, too.

I had a French dessert wine, and Therese generously re-filled my glass, without being asked and without charging for it. She read my mind there. (and made the tomato salad good value!)

I have no hesitation in recommending Habitue and we are looking forward to returning soon. Hopefully, Ross will still be playing music there.

HUGE FAN. I do want to tell everyone this restaurant is TERRIBLE, just so we can continually get a table wen we want one. But I cannot lie. It is FABULOUS. We went for the first time on a Saturday night where there was a jazz band playing in the front room. It was cool, sophisticated and such a wonderful upbeat yet relaxed atmosphere. The wine choice is fabulous and I sampled an Argentinian white wine ($30 for a carafe), we were seated in a booth right underneath the aircon (bliss for a million degree evening), shared the oysters, the bread and dip then for main had beef to share (which was so beautifully slow cooked that all we required was a fork to shred the meat off the bone and it was delicious!) and some vegetables. It was a wonderful experience and I cannot wait to go back again. Harvest was missed up until I tried Habitue. Welcome to North Fremantle!

Relaxed and yummy. We ducked in here last Saturday having given up in the windy conditions in Propeller opposite.
We hadn't been here since it changed from Harvest.
We were shown a couple of tables inside and decided on a table in a sheltered courtyard at the back. It was pretty with wisteria going crazy and a view of the kitchen.
The service from the really gorgeous french waitresses and waiter was casual and professional, good recommendations were given.
We chose 4 dishes from the menu plus the cheapest bottle of red on the menu (which was over $50)
The food was well presented and delicious. Tapas style share plates.
We shared a chocolate and salted caramel which was one of the most scrumptuous desserts ever, however, it was like a rock and you'd probably do better with a hammer and chisel to eat it. Maybe some re-jigging of the the recipe might be in order.
All in all we loved the place, thought it was on the pricey side (but most of Perth is!) We'll definitely be back

I usually panic if I have a meal with no meat in it but the vego meals here are so good I've even tried to replicate them at home. Only trouble is the meat dishes are so good it's always tempting to get one of them too which makes it hard to save room for their great desserts. Always have had good service here too.
Belburke92
Poor. The service wasn't too bad, the steak was charred and we weren't asked how we wanted it cooked ($46) the chips were raw and the chicken was raw. Not impressed and will not be going back.

Disappointing. After hearing so many good things about this place, my partner and I were very underwhelmed by both the food and service.

it took a long while for us to be served, and the waiters were not very attentive or helpful. The food was uninspiring and left a bad taste in your mouth..literally. We ordered a pork dish that was marinated and smothered in so much dark soy sauce (which tasted like Maggi) that I woke up the next day with something like an MSG hangover and a lingering dry garlic taste of that awful dish. The prices are very expensive for what you get as well. Would not go back.

We went there on a warm summers evening and the setting was absolutely divine. Lovely atmosphere under the trees. Service was impeccable, and the food was delicious, every dish we had was perfect, including dessert. Will definitely be returning here!

Cozy Lovely Restaurant Ever. Appreciate opening lunch time on Fri & Sat from this year, 2015. We sat on a lovely cozy table at the front section. Perfect service and food was amazing !! We all 5 people had home made hummus and cheese churros at first, and then grain salad, tomatoes and peach salad then a grilled prawn and a ram shoulder for the main. Each dishes served at the perfect timing. All the tastes were just heven !! I would love to go back Habitue again. Thank you so much for all of your great work.

Nice Find in the back streets of North Freo. We're having a good run in North Fremantle. This is a newish place on the site of the old treasured 'Harvest'. Whilst it doesn't live up to Harvest, it is still pretty good.

They've gone for Tapas style and although I'm a little over every restaurant turning Tapas (every notice how they go Tapas but the price per dish doesn't really come down so the overall bill is a lot more than a traditional entree/main/dessert menu?), Habitue seems to have got it right.

The dishes were well balanced with a good variety. The Grain Salad is amazing (I'm a definite carnivore and would never say this unless it was excellent). Beef short ribs another highlight. The cheese plate is definitely one to share - I think it had close to my body weight in cheese !

The wine list had a decent selection with some 'odd balls' to keep it interesting.

Definitely worth a look

Habitue a home for passion and food. Habitue has a great understanding and passion for food. The care they place in their menu and their customers, keeps me coming back for more. I love the seasonal menu and their flare for exploring new flavours. The atmosphere with the music, candles and decor creates a wonderful haven for passion and food. I take my hat off to the owners and their wonderful staff...they have made the restaurant a must try!

Upon walking into Habitué, you are greeted by softly swaying trees, chic eclectic decor and an all encompassing feeling of warmth which emanates not just from the softly glowing candles but also from the incredibly attentive and passionate staff. The true journey begins with the skilfully engineered burnt orange and spiced rum cocktails, continues on with the pea, mint, broad bean and crisply golden haloumi, and comes to an earth shattering climax with what should become their signature dish: a chocolate and passionfruit perfection that will change your life. Habitué is not simply a journey for your senses, it's a journey for your soul; I am founding a new religion and I think I'm going to make it a Habitué...

Great but pricey. Great food, excellent service, beautiful atmosphere, but over priced. The food is worth it but serves need to be bigger for price. North freo prices I guess but I would eat there far more often if the serves we're more reasonably priced.

Great North Freo Location & Relaxed Decor 7/10. The Tapas Style food is good but you need than a few plates to make a normal meal, they do always try to be different except with dessert it is borderline basic.
The wine list is OK but nearly all European not balanced with even a reasonable selection of Australian wine which is disappointing if you like supporting local produce.
Food & Wine 6.5/10
Service 7.5/10
Venue 8.5/10

Fantastic Service. We recently moved to the area and tried out Habitue last weekend. I was great the waiter Josh i think is name is was fantastic and very attentive. He knew his stuff and was very helpful. The grain salad was amazing and we will definitely be going back

Went for an impromptu dinner with friends last night. Food was delicious! We had the dip (sweet potato and feta I think) with flat bread, tiger prawns with pork crackle, pork empanadas, beetroot salad with feta and hazelnuts, grain salad, lamb with celeriac and the chips. My favourite was definitely the grain salad! Flavoursome, crunchy, fresh and healthy. Paired with the lamb, I could've eaten this all night!
Rebecca Cogan
Overall, Habitue was fantastic. Great service, an amazing wine list and sensational food made to share. The atmosphere was fantastic, with a jazz band playing in the front of the restaurant. Great options for vegetarians & meat lovers. A little pricy but definitely worth it. Highly recommended!
Esca Acse
Quality food from a seriously good kitchen. The food was truly delicious, from the beginning towards the end. I was stuffed with all the goodness. The octopus and mussel escabeche was outstanding, the house made flat bread was warm and soft, perfect on a cold night, along with well balanced pickles served with smooth feta cream, thinly sliced and flavoursome dried meats. Then comes that special winter greens with bonito, the shaved bonito was moving as if it was like the plants being blown by the wind at the beach. Habitue's head chef brenton pyke and his team not only serves tremendous food but the front of house lead by bec was full of knowledge, friendly and provided superb service. Habitue is definitely one of the few hot restaurants in perth right now.
Ckkkk
Food was fantastic. Dinner last night with the girls - was an absolute winner - wonderful ambience, company was wonderful and we had the best belly laughs and the food was good enough that we left a $20 tip - would recommend the pork rack and the almond and chick pea or the beans and and...just get there is all I can say
Samantha Brown
Amazing!! Beautiful food & wine with some of the best service in perth. Will definitely be returning
