Review Down The Alley - Geelong

Peter Wildcard
Great coffee, the best I had on my recent trip to Melbourne. Had the Eggs Benny and Eggs on Toast, generous serves and the poached eggs were just right. Good laid back atmosphere, great service, a hidden gem just around the corner from the larger, busier food places on the foreshore. Well worth the visit.

Walked around Geelong for over an hour trying to find somewhere for breakfast, stumbled upon this place and it turned our day around! Brilliant service, delicious food, funky premises (love the full wall artwork!) and superb coffee. Highly recommend, we will definitely be returning next time we're in Geelong

Friendly staff, breakfast was delicious (Had the banana french toast, with blueberrys and greek yougurt) and everything was very well presented.

This place is a little gem and had one of the best breakfasts we have had ever! The service was slow but as we were not in a hurry it was not an issue. Afterwards we commented on the family who were helping out and were told that the owner had been left in the lurch and had called in her family to help as she was taking orders, making coffee and cooking on her own which is simply not possible. I would give them 10 stars for effort and definitely for the delicious food and am sorry that the got bad reviews from people who should have gone to a fast food chain if they were in a hurry. If you want one of the best breakfasts ever and have time to just sit and enjoy, put these guys first on your list!

On the spur of the moment, we headed there for breakfast. The scrambled eggs on sour dough were very nicely done. Ordered an iced coffee after seeing one go to another table. Thanks, the two of use really enjoyed the meals.

Went there to have a quick breakfast and look around the shops before I had to jump on the train. Got there at 10:15 was served a pretty average coffee at 10:40 with only about 7 other people in the cafe. Then had to wait till 11:20 till we were finally served food and my sister got the iced chocolate we ordered when we first got there. Friendly faces but poor service, ruined my day that I was wanting to enjoy with my family but ended up having to go straight from the cafe to the train station as we wouldn’t of had enough time to look around the shops. Very disappointed.

Funky vibe and wall art. Greeted by friendly staff the moment I walked in the door. Was over the moon with my muffin still hot from the oven. Nice coffee and menu looked delish. A hidden gem, perfect chilled out place to refuel while exploring the waterfront!
Lisa Hatchard
Really great, simple food and excellent coffee. Relaxed atmosphere and the guy running the place was very chill, friendly and organised. Would be my regular if I lived in Geelong!
Jane Valentine
Great little place, tucked away down an alley! Fantastic staff, best coffee in Geelong. Great breakfast, good prices. 👍🏼
Judy Van Bakkum
Had an amazing breakfast. Servings are so generous and prices are very reasonable. A hidden gem. Will definitely be back. Well done guys.

Tried the home made granola with fresh fruit and a gorgeous peach, almond and coconut panacotta! Divine! Have always loved this place so so happy Ben and his team are going strong!

Loved this little cafe 👌 Had the breakky roll & coffee for $12, absolute bargain, the roll was yummy & coffee was perfectly made.
Lorena Skipper
Consistently great coffee & great food.

Ordered a sausage roll from there one day. Not only was it cold it was raw in the middle. Food was overpriced as well. Will not be returning
Katrina Robins
Awesome food. Highly recommend the breakfast taco. Great coffee, great food, great service, great vibe !!

Really good food, light yet super filling. Unique vibe, good attention to detail, like you get lemon in your water. Friendly staff. They just need sharper knives!

Definitely come again

Great coffee guys, smiley cheery staff, a healthy buzz in the place, and exceptional breakfast. You have my vote of confidence!

Such lovely staff and the food was so yummy. The onion rings were amazing. Would recommend to anyone.

Friday night Mexican night is the best, great food, great drinks and at a great price !
Todd Fletcher
Great food, great prices, absolute cracker of a place!! Staff are awesome.

Lovely staff, great food & coffee. Just away from the hustle & bustle of the waterfront. Love you're work!!!!!

Lost our lunch order and took them over half an hour to realise and only when we started to look at the kitchen wonderingly. I know this because the waitress then told us they'd had a stuffed up and asked what we ordered again. We left, I offered to pay for the coke that had gone flat waiting for our meal and she actually took the money. As bad a service and response as I've had for years.

Had a lovely breakfast this morning. I had The Roll ...fresh ciabatta roll, bacon, egg, spinach and relish. The Boss had the Fruit Toast. Two big slabs which were fruity and plenty of butter was provided ...yum. Nice feel about this cafe. We will happily go back.

I love this place. Away from the hustle of Westfield, and the only food that's cooked with a bit of love on the waterfront. Great breakfasts, and the Ruben Panini is the bomb. The coffee's awesome too.

They were closed when I got there - at 10:50am! Thanks alot for wasting my time, at least have a sign up and inform customers online. Really not good enough

Great food and coffee. The staff were very friendly. We came for breakfast - the menu was great and the food delicious. Down the Alley deserves to be the busy little cafe that it is.

At first we thought perhaps we'd gotten there too late as the shop was a bit dark and there was only one other customer in the store.. Wed walked past several restaurant s and cafes buzzing with people on the waterfront.. The guy behind the counter was friendly and assured us the kitchen was still open and gave us a menu. The ice coffee was delicious and the okonomiyaki with a runny egg and pickled ginger surprisingly delightful.

Happy to help, professional food and people lovers.
Mr Husband came in to get us a bite. While they were just about to close for the day (chairs up, sweeping the place), those guys were more than happy to get into the kitchen and whip up a (most delicious, I might add!) vegetarian sandwich for me. The Reuben was excellent, Mr H said, and the coffees (one soy for moi, one strong) were the definition of perfect.

A great little spot hidden away, yes, you guessed it, down an alley. At first, I was a little put off by their limited menu. But despite this, the quality of the dishes they offer appears to be high. I thought the coffee was quite average, a little bitter, however the quality of their food makes Down the Alley an enjoyable breakfast option in Geelong. Staff were great too - would definitely come back here.

Food: Good
Services: Good
Price: A little bit pricey but OK
Environment: OK
Location: OK

I visited Geelong and looking for a recommended breakfast. Found this place from the rating app. Very friendly staffs and food cooked well. European style food.

How good is this joint?!?! Hidden away is this ripper place. Bought our bully down and she was treated with as much love and attention as we were. Absolutely killer breakfast (how good is okinomiyaki in the am!!!!!
A must try on a lazy sunday morning.
Beautiful cafe located at Geelong! Had their poached eggs on sourdough + extra spinach and sautéed mushroom. Yumm the poached eggs are prefect!

Was so excited to try the Canadian waffles but they changed their menu. We had poached eggs on toast with bacon and roasted tomatoes. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the tomatoes were a highlight, they were amazing and full of flavour! Coffee was good and service was lovely.

Just went this place, atmosphere was great nice and small, hidden away. Only issue was the menu, not a great range of breakfast food, menu is not the same as the menu on here. We were very disappointed in menu choise

This place is perfectly nestled away "down the alley" and out of the hustle and bustle of the city. A really groovy little corner, that offers beautiful food. I had the poached eggs on sour dough , and it was really good, however the bread was a little hard ! I'd still rate this place 4.0 !

Clyde and I were visiting Geelong for the weekend and didn't want to leave without having a hearty breakfast, so we jumped on Zomato and found this place. Its safe to say we now know why they have a 4.2 rating.

It was a beautiful day so we sat outside in the little court yard.
We started with an...

Cafe looks Super quiet on a Wednesday Morning, which make sense as it was a weekday. Menu were very simple. Ordered a French toast w a latte. French toast was ordinary. Partner ordered a poached egg on toast additional an avocado and bacon, together w a Long black. Waitress forgotten about the bacon. We both agree that the cafe had probably seen better days.
Peaceloveandfoodiness
Excellent coffee, service and location. Food is highly tasty and generous in size. It's not very big which means that tables can be hard to find during busy periods. Overall one of Geelong's best cafes.
Patersani
A great little cafe with a few minor issues. Firstly, great position and coffee. We came in for brekky on our mates wedding day, with the groom. What struck me was the fact that we were asked not to crowd the cafe. They didn't want us sitting, crowding the walkways. Now if you have more than 8 people coming to your cafe, spending their money, shouldn't you be more accommodating and welcoming? That aside, the meal was good, I had the brekky burrito, very very tasty and extremely filling!
Marian Robinson
Best breakfast and brunch ever, fresh food, excellent pot of leaf tea, aesthetically pleasing and clever pallet and guttering garden ideas. They have the "get it right" factor. Service excellent. Nothing could have improved today. A rarity.

There was no air conditioning & it was a forty degree day. The food was super average. All of our iced chocolates & smoothies arrived lukewarm. The waitress was clumsy & not overly polite. Overall I was really disappointed.

Amazing coffee!
Fantastic staff!
Beautiful croissant!
Fabulous decor!
Well worth a trip to Geelong just for the coffee!
Don't go anywhere else!

For cafe lovers that want a great coffee on the waterfront, Down the Alley Geelong is the place to be. Hidden away down the side of Edgewater across from the Novotel (which would explain the name), Ben and Christina have injected their own personalities into the small space and created a cozy alternative to the other restaurants and cafes in the area.
Katherine
What a great find (eventually)!!. Once we found the venue all we could do was praise! The coffee was one of the best I have had in the Geelong CBD, the Banana smoothie - fresh, fruity and real, poached eggs to perfection as well. The best of the lot were the breakfast tacos! We will be back for sure

Fantastic coffee and wonderful food. Came upon this gorgeous quirky cafe while tying to find somewhere different for lunch and it went above and beyond all of my expectations. We had the sliders and a coffee for lunch which was reasonably priced (I have no idea if the prices have changed but all of the comments about being overpriced must be used to hand outs) $10 for a slider and a side of chips perfect size for lunch and the coffee was delicious!
Staff were wonderfully friendly and the atmosphere was perfect. We had a pram which was a tight squeeze but we're able to fit out of everyone's way. Wouldn't suggest if you have a few prams as its a little small on space. We will definately be back :)

Awesome place. Also the bet service!

Big thumbs up!. The menu is brilliant! Yummy, healthy, fresh and vibrant looking food on the plate! The service is friendly and the coffee is great. A great little place tucked away with it's own little funky vibe, and still with a view of the ocean. Highly recommend the potato cheese and chive waffle! All day breakfast was a winner with our table.

Unpleasant experience. The food was nice, although over priced... That wasn't the issue.
What I had a problem with was the service we received from the blonde woman working there.
She was very abrupt, rude and disinterested.. When one of us asked her a question about something on the menu she goes "what?" They responded and she replied with "what about it?".
She also made rude facial expressions when she thought we were not looking.
After this, despite the food being enjoyable, I would not return to this overpriced cafe.
It's a shame we had this experience because obviously many others love it.

Average. Bacon rinds were not removed and was really tough. Food is just normal and not anything to rave about.

Great little find Friday nite, fresh yummy mexican. Friendly staff & groovy music, will be back

MEXICAN FRIDAY NIGHT! awesome, easily the best and freshest mexican good in Geelong. Great service, great coffee and great atmosphere. Lucky enough to come here when they had live music. LOVE IT

Great coffee. Having a great coffee from this place - can't wait to go back & try the food - the menu sounds amazing!
Kat
Had the chive and cheddar potato waffle. Yummy!!!! Was so good. Couldn't fault it. Service was fairly good except for having to send my coffee back because they forgot something.

All in all was a great experience and would definitely recommend to others who like cafés that put their own spin on cafe staples.
Dysfunctional
Tasty breakfast, great service. Friendly, welcoming staff looked after us while we ordered and ate our tasty breakfast. Unsolicited, they even brought over some crayons and paper for our 2 year old, which was appreciated.
Iheartfood
Great breakfast. Had the breakfast bruschetta. Delicious homemade pesto on scrambled eggs with avocado. Superb coffee also. Would have loved a freshly squeezed juice, but that was a minor flaw in a good experience. Will be back.

Amazing oats and porridge. Great service!!! Do it!
Emma
Below average. Waited over an hour for breakfast which turned out to be very average...nothing special. Female staff member appeared quite rude and several mistakes made with fellow customers - some so disgruntled they left after order had been forgotten even when they reminded staff twice. Very disappointing. Outdoor tables too small. It was so busy it would have been better to turn people away, take away the sign on the footpath and have a quality service for those dining instead of piling up orders and having people wait for tables. Good coffee and male wait staff cheery but not worth a return visit.

Not bad for Geelong. Nice presentation but my fritters weren't as tasty as ones I've had in Melbourne. But not bad for Geelong.

A really pleasant way to start the day. Stumbled across this gem on a sunday morning. Great food and really lovely service ...its great to see people enjoying themselves at work!!! It puts a smile on your face!!!

Had a great breakfast on the weekend. Cosy location. Nice Coffee. Friendly service. Try the breakfast koftas with poached eggs and croutons, delish!

Love this place! Warm and cosy, with super friendly staff and a very yummy menu. Will be back for sure.

Relaxed Tasty Friendly. Nestled next to the overpriced Sheraton, this place is great. Affordable, super tasty, relaxed. Very friendly efficient staff round it out for a ten out of ten.
Shelley Dart
Went there for breakfast, amazing goat's cheese on the mushroom bruschetta. French toast was also delicious, very yummy brioche bread.
Gerard
Great service. Relaxed atmosphere. Food was great. I ordered the breakfast taco. Well priced.
Geelong Diner
GREAT service. Oh, I haven't actually gone there. I ordered an online deal that was about to run out. January is busy. Called them on the last day...
And Christina, the lovely owner said - hey, don't rush, we'll honour it anytime.
What wonderful service without even getting to the table.
I'm thinking that with the attitude the owners have here that this place is a good 'un.

Great!. Sweet little place with friendly staff and honest tasty food. An enjoyable experience!
The Two Timers
Fresh food made with love in a fun atmosphere! Prefect for a good chat and a cuppa. An affordable menu and lovely service.

Nothing Special!. We chose this cafe because of the reviews from other diners but quite frankly we found the menu and food quite ordinary. I must say the staff were very nice and efficient but our breakfast meal was overpriced for what we got and the add-ons with our eggs not particularly generous for what they charged ,eg the advocado no more than a dessert spoon for $4 was a bit rich I felt. There are so many cafés along the Main Street , I feel this cafe has to lifts it's game if it is to survive!

Great Little Find ..... We stumbled upon this place trying to avoid the main street crowds. Experienced great service & ambience (nice not to have 'doof doof' music blaring in my ear for a change). Food was fresh, simple & fabulous - as were the local teas and the coffee (and I was with a very fussy coffee drinker). Unfortunately I'm not local to Geelong - or this would definitly become my local haunt. Give it a go ........

Steve. Had lunch with a friend. Great place for a conversation. Wonderful helpful and happy staff. Fresh and healthy food and of course great coffee. Welcome to Geelong.

A great little spot on Geelong's Waterfront. A funky little cafe that finally means some great food is being served up along Geelong's Waterfront - this is just what that part of Geelong desperately needed. We had a fabulous breakfast there a couple of days ago - delicious, and another contender for best breakfast in town.

Can be a bit tricky to find, but luckily we had some friends explain to us this place's location... well worth the hunt. Hope the young couple keep up the fantastic work. It's our new favourite haunt.
